EASY TOILET

TRAINING By Lorraine Thomas

Every toddler will eventually get the hang of using the toilet, but be prepared – toilet training is a messy business. Give it a go when you have got the time, patience and energy. The more positive and relaxed you are, the easier it will be. Is Your Toddler Ready?

Consistency

There is no ‘right’ age to start toilet training. Every toddler is different. Some will get the hang of it much earlier than others. Boys often take longer than girls. In general, most children are aged between two and three when they start. Don’t feel under pressure to start because other parents are doing it. Go with your gut instinct. Look out for the signs; these include showing interest in the toilet, telling you they want a wee or poo or pulling off nappies.

Consistency is key, as it is for much of toddler training, so it’s important to sit your toddler on the potty or toilet at regular intervals. Young children don’t like sitting for long so help them by chatting or reading a story. The toilet can frighten some toddlers because of the noise. If you encounter this, flush after your toddler has left the bathroom when you first start training.

You both need to be on top form to make toilet training work, so don’t start when they are unwell or tired. Make sure training does not coincide with a change in your toddler’s daily routine, such as change of childcare.

Keep your approach low-key. If you take it in your stride – they will learn to do so too. Adopt a favourite song for your toddler to listen to when on the toilet or give them a book to look at. Toilet sticker charts in the bathroom can work wonders. Praise effort and attitude more than the result! Always be consistent and make sure other carers are using the same approach.

Training during summer months is is Training during summer months helpful because youyou cancan let let your little helpful because your little oneone runrun around without a nappy on.on. around without a nappy

Accidents will happen

Preparing Decide whether you are going to use a potty or would rather attach a training seat to your toilet. Sharing a fun book about using the potty provides a good opportunity to talk to your toddler, so order one in advance. Take your toddler with you when you go to the toilet and show them how it is done so they know the deal before you ask them to have a go. Let them choose a new pair of pants to wear. The more involved they feel, the better.

It will take time. Some toddlers take weeks, others months, and bladder control usually comes after bowel control. It is also perfectly normal to be dry during the day, but not at night. Accidents are inevitable. Some toddlers are fine at home, but unable to use the toilet when out. Make sure part of your routine is portable e.g. singing the same song will help. Remember to stay calm and positive - this is all new to your toddler, so it’s important you are calm as this will rub off on them. And don’t worry about it – they’ll get there sooner or later!

Controversy Corner

Should it be Illegal

TO SMACK

CHILDREN?

le By Raymond Arthur - Professor of Law , Northumbria University, Newcast

With Scotland set to become the first UK country to make it illegal to smack children, the debate has opened up about whether the rest of the UK should follow suit. Hi Lindsey, What is the Current Law on Smacking? The current laws in Britain today prohibit adults from smacking, pushing or shoving other adults. They also protect pets from violence. However, parents are allowed to use physical force to punish their children, provided the punishment does not escalate beyond ‘reasonable punishment’. In England and Wales, under section 58 of the Children Act 2004, parents who are accused of causing Actual Bodily Harm to their children cannot invoke the defence of reasonable punishment if their smacks cause mental harm, bruising, scratching or reddening of the skin.

Why is Smacking So Bad? Research has shown that when children are physically punished, they are much more likely to exhibit violent and anti-social behaviour themselves as they get older. When parents engage in severe forms of corporal punishment, or administer physical discipline in the absence of parental warmth, children feel angry and unjustly treated, they defy parental authority and engage in anti-social conduct.1 The use of corporal punishment is, unsurprisingly, associated with significant increases in physical abuse and long-term anti-social behaviour.2 Parents who rely heavily on harsh punishment, or who are erratic in their discipline, are twice as likely to have children who break the law - harsh punishment is associated with more violent and more frequent offending.

The

Parents Don’t Walk Their Talk you for conThank

Even though almost all parents agree that children tacting us. under 2 years should not be smacked, research shows that three-quarters of 1 year olds and more than half of all babies under 1 year have been smacked. Among We have a ‘Daily Ac4 year olds, 48% are hit more than once a week. Many planner children may be hit even moretivity’ than their parents in the realise or intend since, for example, many mothers back of our magazine, appear to be unaware of the extent to which the child’s father is smacking the child.

The Slippery Slope Parents are most likely to smack their children when they are angry and under stress.3 In 2000, the House of Commons Health Committee was responsible for examining the factors that led to the death of Victoria Climbié, an eight year old child who died having suffered 128 separate injuries inflicted over a period of several months at the hands of her guardians. The committee found that punishment of the child started with ‘little smacks’ that escalated into abuse and eventually ended in her death. It observed that: “…not all other countries seem to have the same problems with child abuse as Britain does. The experience in Sweden, for example, which has long outlawed the physical punishment of children, is one in which child deaths from deliberate harm by adults are now unknown.”

So Other Countries Already Ban Smacking? Yes. The position in the UK is increasingly at odds with its European neighbours. 24 European countries have abolished a parents’ right to use any forms of physical punishment: Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechstein, Luxembourg, Moldova, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Ukraine.

In these countries, levels of violence against children is lower than in the UK, there are fewer prosecutions for violence against children and fewer children are taken into care.

non-violent ways to settle their disputes, and it would bring the law into full compliance with the Human Rights Act 1998 and other international law obligations.

The Problem with ‘Reasonable Punishment’

A law specifically banning physical punishment of children by their parents need not have criminal sanctions attached - its mere existence would signal the unacceptability of physical punishment. This would help to influence social attitudes and encourage the use of alternatives to physical punishment.

The inclusion of ‘reasonable punishment’ in the Children Act 2004 makes the law on smacking too vague. It leaves police, lawyers and prosecutors with the task of deciding when hitting is hurting a child, physically and mentally.

How is a parent to know what degree of force to use? Will parents know the precise force and velocity required to hit a child without causing a bruise? Whether a bruise is created or not is often the test used to determine if a smack has been too hard, but this ends up treating different children in different ways, as some children bruise quite easily, whilst others may only bruise after a severe smack. Aside from the issue of enforceability, the lack of clarity in the law means that it fails to send out a clear message about what behaviour is unacceptable in families, or what society feels about violence. The Health Committee urged that an outright ban could be educative rather than punitive, such as the compulsory wearing of seatbelts for example. So a ban on corporal punishment could lead to a cut in assaults on children without a consequent rise in the prosecution of parents.

The Case For Banning Smacking Entirely One hundred years ago, legal defences existed for husbands who beat their wives - it is no longer legal for a man to hit or physically chastise his wife or partner. Physically punishing children is a form of domestic violence. Children are one of the only groups in society not to enjoy full legal protection from assault - reform of the law is essential in order to protect children adequately. Such a reform would ensure that the law is clear, simple and workable, so that parents know where they stand - and it would send out a clear message about what behaviour is unacceptable in families. It would also assist in bringing up our children in a society free from violence by teaching them

The unambiguous nature of an outright ban on physical punishment would also make the law easier to police and such a ban would be consistent with the UK’s obligations under international law - The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child has urged the UK government to promote positive, participatory and non-violent forms of discipline and respect for children’s equal right to human dignity and physical integrity.5

A Brighter Future The success of families in bringing up children will shape the future, not only of those individual children, but also of our whole society. Applying appropriate discipline, in the sense of responding consistently to a child’s behaviour and setting clear boundaries, is part of bringing up children. A failure to provide guidance and set boundaries is in itself a form of neglect that can be very damaging to a child. On the other hand, discipline that is harsh can be damaging to a child both physically and emotionally. Emphasis should be placed on promoting better parenting skills and helping parents to find methods of getting children to co-operate and behave in an acceptable and appropriate manner, using means other than physical punishment. This might include, for example, keeping the child in, sending the child to his or her room, or stopping the child doing something he or she likes (such as watching the television).4 Physical punishment of children is the only physical assault tolerated under the law. The justification of an assault on a child on the basis of ‘reasonable punishment’ should be removed, thereby putting the child in exactly the same position as adults and pets in respect of the law.

THE NEST H O W T O M A K E S U R E Y O U R L I T T L E O N E I S R E A D Y F O R T H E I R F I R S T D AY O F S C H O O L September is an exciting time for both teachers and pupils, but more so for those children who will be starting school for the first time. Whilst it can be a little daunting, most children settle quickly and easily into their new surroundings. Throughout their lives our children will go through many times of transition and with a little help, preparation and encouragement they are able to cope and indeed flourish during these times. The key thing is not to worry. Children start school with a wide range of experiences and abilities and the teachers are there to help everyone progress at their own pace.

WH AT SH O U L D MY CH I L D BE A B L E TO DO ?

PR EPA R I N G THEM MEN TA LLY A N D EMOTI ONA LLY

Your child doesn’t need to be able to read, write or count before they start school but it is helpful if you have shared experiences of stories and nurtured a love of books. It is also beneficial if you have provided your child with activities through which they have become familiar with mark making, such as paint, large crayons and chalks. Many activities such as singing, playing games and talking about nature and numbers will begin to build your child’s enthusiasm for learning and a curiosity to want to investigate the world around them.

Your child’s new school will often provide you with a brochure about what to expect when they start Reception and some will even share a child-friendly version with the soon-to-be pupil. It is important to make the most of these booklets, looking at the pictures and talking about the positive things that are in store. They will begin to look forward to the new things they will see and do and the friends they will make.

It’s important to help your child build the skills to become an independent thinker and learner. Little things like putting on their own shoes and coat, hanging up their bag, washing their hands or helping you to tidy away can prepare them for listening and following instructions when they start Reception class. These age-appropriate tasks encourage your child to become independent with your support.

Visit the school as often as possible with your child before they start. There will likely be open days, fairs, plays and other events too which you can attend to familiarise yourselves with the journey, setting and people. Most schools also hold a specific ‘transition or moving-up day’ for children to experience a day in their new class with their teacher and classmates. Share your child’s interests and strengths with their new teacher as this will enable them to provide opportunities to enthuse individual children. You can do this verbally or through an All About Me booklet.

L E AD B Y E X AMPLE The single most important thing is to promote a relaxed and positive attitude to their new beginning. It is often us as parents who worry most. Children are naturally sociable, quick to make friends and love the adventure of starting school. They are ready for the next stage in their learning and will blossom as they grow during their first year at school. The progress that you see is amazing and you will look back and wonder why you ever worried.
