Hello
welcome
to the New Year issue of Toddle About!
Contents
It’s funny, but I think that one of the benefits of having young children is that they really help to mark the passage of time. When other things in life change so slowly, it’s refreshing - and inspiring - to watch our children who show us how so much can happen in a single year.
What’s New?
So what are you going to do this year to make it count?

If you’re thinking about setting up your own business, then you should have a read of this issue’s Mums Making It feature on page 20 where Kirstie Reynolds from KNR Jewellery shares her tips on how to balance running a successful business with running a happy family.

Baby Yoga & Massage
Baby yoga and baby massage are a great way to bond with your baby, and they can really have a positive impact on your baby by calming them and helping with sleep issues and colic as well as increasing mum’s wellbeing, and easing postnatal anxieties. I run Daisy Baby® classes in Milton Keynes, and our classes are all about baby-led active bonding. We teach mums yoga and massage techniques within a friendly and intimate group surrounding, making them feel more empowered, more energised and ready to face the world!
Baby Yoga By using gentle movement you will help develop your baby’s vestibular system. This is what triggers the startle reflex in babies and makes them jump suddenly and cry (ever had your baby in your arms quietly asleep and you lay them down ever-so
gently but they still wake and cry?) This is the sensory system that contributes to balance and spatial awareness, and in babies, this is developing day by day. We can help to encourage your baby’s vestibular system development by lifting them gently up and down, all the time keeping eye contact with them so they are comforted and confident because they know you are with them. handmade for children

The kit contains books, DVDs and Flash Cards, combining music, poetry, puppets and real-world images to expand your baby’s vocabulary and teach them to read.

Baby Yoga to try at home!
Baby Massage to try at home!
A very good way to try this is by singing ‘Row, row, row your boat’, with your baby sitting on your lap facing you whilst you pull them up and down, by their hands, from flat to sitting gently (please note that this exercise is for babies who can support their heads themselves).
A technique to try at home if your baby is suffering with teething or blocked sinuses is to gently roll each toe – one at a time - between your fingers, all the way from the big toe to the little toe, and all the way back to the big toe again (repeat on other foot). You could sing to them ‘This little piggy went to market....’ whilst you keep eye contact and smile, reassuring your baby and bonding with them at the same time. These are just a couple of techniques that Daisy Baby® classes offer, to help you actively bond with your baby, cope with ailments and help them to develop important sensory systems in the early months of their lives. Plus we have gentle techniques to help you get your tummy back too!
Baby Massage Infant massage deepens bonding with your baby, encouraging a release of Oxytocin and Endorphin hormones, which make both you and your baby feel happy. It can also help with teething and blocked sinuses, essential in the winter months when colds are doing the rounds.
Donna Lynch is a Birth Educator and Instructor at The Lazy Daisy Chain ®, based in Milton Keynes. Leaving Baby to Cry
It’s something that every baby does and every parent finds difficult to manage at times. What do we know about why babies cry and how best to respond? Why do babies cry? A baby is born defenceless and helpless into the world. They are completely dependent on the care of others for their survival. Although hormonal changes during the late stages of pregnancy prime parents to be ready to respond to their baby, the baby is also born with skills to draw them in. The principal one in young babies is crying. It is their only way of communicating distress and their need for care.
So crying is an early form of communication?
What are the consequences of colic?
Undoubtedly. A cry can signal hunger, tiredness, a full nappy, being too hot or too cold, boredom or that the baby is anxious. Over time, parents become attuned to the different cries their baby uses to tell them different things. They will also learn to tell the difference between fussing (restlessness and agitation with some associated crying) and crying that indicates more acute distress.
The good news is that there are no long term consequences for the baby. Any delay in weight gain is just that. There are no indications that a colicky baby will have later problems with sleep, allergies, excessive crying, behavioural problems or a more challenging temperament.
How much crying is normal? Studies show that babies typically peak in their crying at around two and a half hours in every twenty four, at six weeks of age. By the time they are three months old this has reduced to an average of seventy minutes.
What about ‘colicky’ babies? Some babies seem to have more extensive and severe periods of crying in the early evening. When it lasts for around three hours and happens most evenings, with sudden onset and no obvious cause, it is sometimes called colic. This is thought to be associated with feeding (particularly bottle feeding), cramps and wind but there are few definitive answers. One in five babies suffers with colic at five to six weeks but this reduces to only one in a hundred by three months.
14
The
So, no need to worry then? That depends on your view point. The emotional stress on parents of managing a screaming infant for three hours a night is significant. It can put a strain on breast feeding, the parental relationship, the parent child relationship and parental mental health generally. Desperate parents are at risk of shaking their baby and Shaken Baby Syndrome has very serious consequences for all. Therefore parents need to seek support from each other, extended family and friends, their GP and health visitor and services such as cry-sis (www.cry-sis.org.uk). The countdown till baby is three months old will be a lifeline for most.
How should you respond to a crying baby? There are two principal approaches: pick them up as soon as possible each time versus leaving them to cry. Both camps have strong advocates but the psychological and neurodevelopmental evidence clearly supports responding to baby rather than ignoring them.
What us at www.toddleabout.co.uk/articles icondo tellsyou youthink? whichTell advertisers have a voucher in the centre pages
Co The benefits of attending to a crying baby Babies cry when they need one of their basic needs to be met. This could be a physical need or an emotional one. The world is a large and unfamiliar place to a baby and they are easily overwhelmed. In addition, a baby’s brain is not fully developed at birth. One of the areas that takes several months to begin to mature is that of emotional regulation. When a baby becomes upset, for whatever reason, they simply do not have the ability to calm themselves down. This is something that develops over a long time, and through their experiences with the people who look after them. By picking up a crying baby, by holding them close, by talking gently or singing, the parent’s calmness is passed onto them. Indeed, it would seem that mother and baby practically share an endocrine system. Studies have found that levels of the stress hormone (cortisol) rise in a baby when they are crying. This triggers an associated rise in the mother’s levels, as she shares that distress and is moved to respond. When the mother is able to decrease her own arousal, using her own emotion regulation skills, then the baby’s levels also drop. Crucially, babies are learning all the time. Connections are made in the brain with every experience. Those experiences that are repeated (or are important for survival), get hardwired into their neuronal pathways. They become part of that baby’s personality and understanding of the world. Babies learn whether the world is a scary place or not, whether they can influence the world, whether they are important and valued, or not. They learn these things through their interactions with others. These lessons potentially stay with them, through their neural architecture, for a lifetime.
But surely picking up a baby all the time spoils them? It is true that a baby that is comforted every time they are upset will come to expect it. In that way they will learn about how important and loved they are. They will feel safe and secure. They will feel less anxious and will therefore, over time, need to cry less often.
ntr Co overs rne y r
Likewise, a baby that is left to cry for an extended period of time will eventually realise that nobody is coming and stop crying. They may well cry louder next time, to try and get comforted, but if they are not responded to again, they will learn that there is little point in crying and be less likely to cry again. They will also have learnt lessons about what they can expect from others that are likely to be with them throughout their life.
So can you never leave a baby to cry? With a young baby (less than six or seven months) it does seem important that the carer responds relatively promptly. However, it is not always possible to respond straight away. There are other children to look after, meals to cook, loo breaks to take and sometimes a moment or two of ‘me’ time is needed. The evidence suggests this is OK. It is that final cuddle that is important. If there has to be a delay, there has to be. Even young infants are excellent at knowing another’s intentions. If a carer goes to them in a loving way, when they can, they are comforted. No harm done.
What about with older infants? The ability to self-soothe and regulate emotions develops slowly. It begins at around eight months but isn’t completed until early adulthood! As an infant gets older, it may not always be necessary to pick them up when they start to fuss. They are likely to be soothed with a touch, or a song, some eye contact and a few words. It can be helpful to give them a minute or two to practise self-soothing, but if they become very distressed they will still need a cuddle.
What about bedtimes? There are a number of ways to encourage your baby or child to sleep – and a lot has been written about it. The key skill is a child learning to fall asleep by themselves. If a young baby is happy to do this, then it is to be encouraged. However, a child under six months that is crying for comfort should be given it, as should an older child with separation anxiety. The latest evidence suggests that controlled crying techniques for establishing sleep in children over six months do no harm and this can therefore be considered within the full range of approaches that can be used.

Salt Therapy
– An alternative to steroids? As a parent you generally know when things aren’t quite right with your child. You visit the doctor frequently, but whatever they prescribe doesn’t really seem to help. Antibiotics or steroid creams are suggested for itchy skin; inhalers for possible asthma … like many parents, you worry about giving these things to your baby or toddler. This is how it was for some of the parents who discovered Salt Therapy while researching for an alternative treatment for their children. Salt in its natural form is essential for our health and for our bodies to function properly. Natural salt was widely used as a therapy by the Ancient Greeks they discovered that salt mines and salt caves had a therapeutic influence on the human body and skin.
At the Salt Cave in Milton Keynes, the natural healing microclimate of a salt mine has been replicated, but with a dedicated treatment room for children to play in while they breathe in the healing salty air. Harry and Finley are two toddlers that enjoy regular visits to The Salt Cave and both their families have seen a vast improvement in their breathing. Both boys have lost the persistent cough, wheezing and rattling chest they had when they first started using salt therapy. Anna, whose first visit saw her come in with bleeding wounds from the eczema around her ears, now has completely healed ears, and the eczema has almost cleared from her entire body. The owners of the Salt Cave are so confident that salt therapy can help people of all ages including babies from 6 months old and pregnant women that they are offering everyone A FREE 60 MINUTE TRIAL SESSION. Contact the Salt Cave now on 01908 888480 to book your free session. The Salt Cave, Unit A, Old Stratford Local Centre, Falcon Drive, Old Stratford, MK19 6FG

Q&A Baby Health! www.
.co.uk
Toddle About have teamed up with Dr. David Cremonesini to help you with any medical concerns you may have about your baby or toddler. And Dr. David is well positioned to help! An NHS Paediatric Consultant for over 4 years, he trained in allergy and breathing problems in Oxford; he is also the Netmums doctor and has written for the Sainsbury’s Little Ones magazine. Nuts!
Q: I have anaphylaxis to nuts which I didn’t really discover until my teens. My allergy has worsened over
the years and now I carry an epipen. My question is when and how should I introduce my 20 month old to nuts? From Jody in Leamington Spa
A: This is a common query I get, but the reality is that less than 10% of children have a nut allergy that is
passed down from one of their parents. However, if the parent has a severe nut allergy themselves, then the thought of introducing nuts to their child can be a stressful time and I’d advise getting the child tested by a paediatrician with nut allergy expertise. You’ll need to go over both yours and your child’s medical history and decide on the next steps with the paediatrician. It’s worth bearing in mind that because your child has never eaten nuts, the test results will be more difficult to interpret. If the test comes back negative, that’s reassuring, but it doesn’t 100% rule out allergy. Furthermore, if you don’t then give your child any nuts (because they live in a nut free house), they may still go on to develop an allergy some years later. Therefore it’s really only worth testing if you are then going to introduce nuts.
Nut Allergies – In a nutshell 1 Peanut allergy is on the increase and we now think it affects 1 in 50 infants. 2 There is no evidence that avoiding peanuts during pregnancy protects your baby from developing peanut allergy. It may actually be the case that eating nuts during pregnancy might reduce the risk but further studies are needed to confirm this. 3 With babies, there is a myth that if you delay the introduction of nuts until your child is 2 years old, then that will protect them from developing a nut allergy. There is actually no evidence for this and it may even be the case that early introduction helps prevent allergies, though this has not yet been proven. I typically recommend that parents don’t delay the introduction of nuts, though of course no whole nuts for babies as there is a risk of choking. 4 The majority of allergic reactions to peanuts are mild (hives, itchy rash, oral swelling, vomiting) and should occur soon (usually within minutes) of eating or touching a peanut. In some cases they can be more severe leading to anaphylaxis – symptoms of which include difficulty in breathing, throat swelling or a drop in blood pressure.
5 If you suspect a nut allergy, you must see a GP who should organise a test (either skin prick or blood test), which should be done to confirm it. This is a national (NICE) standard and parents should seek this or a referral to hospital. Alternative testing has been discredited by National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). 6 Only 20% of children will outgrow a peanut allergy. Many children also have allergies to tree nuts like hazelnut or cashew nut. If you think your child has outgrown their allergy, you should always check with a health professional before testing the theory at home. 7 The key treatment is to avoid all foods containing peanuts. You need to check all ingredients of foods closely. www.allergyuk.org is a useful resource. It’s usually OK if someone is eating them nearby, just don’t kiss them! If the child has asthma or had a severe reaction, they will need an adrenaline pen as they are at risk of anaphylaxis.
If you have any questions of your own for Dr David, please send them to info@toddleabout.co.uk with ‘Health Question’ as the subject. Dr David Cremonesini runs a private allergy clinic in the BMI Hospital in Milton Keynes. To arrange an appointment for you or your child, you can contact him on 01480 423154 or kidsallergy@gmail.com. Mums Making it
Spotlight on
Kirstie Reynolds from KNR Jewellery
If you’re planning a career change in 2013, you’ve probably considered working for yourself in some way - after all, if you’re the boss then you can organise your working hours around your children. It’s not an easy balancing act though, so we asked Kirstie Reynolds from KNR Jewellery for her tips on being a mum AND a business owner. Kirstie Reynolds - KNR Jewellery Business: Personalised silver, fingerprint jewellery
Why did you decide to work for yourself? It was quite natural for me as my parents had their own business. I set up in 1999 after travelling for a year post-university and ran the business part time for 8 years, alongside my day job as a teacher. When I was pregnant with our first son, Oliver (now nearly 4), my husband and I decided that the time was right for me to pursue my business dreams.
How did you choose what to do? I followed my passions. My degree was in ceramics, during which I met someone using malleable silver, which is clay-like, but silver – I had to have a go and I got hooked! I started making jewellery collections and it was only natural to take Oliver’s impressions in silver when he arrived. When our friends saw
them, they started ordering some for themselves! I created a range of products, a friend created a website and the business grew from there.
What changed when you became a mum? I first worked when Oliver napped and in the evenings but when my youngest was born, Harvey, I was well established locally as ‘the fingerprint lady’ and I just couldn’t let all the hard work I had put into building up my business go to waste. It was incredibly hard as I had no choice but to work every night to keep up with the orders, and this was often till late as this was when everyone else slept and I had unbroken time to work.
Party bags for kids Make your child’s party extra special Pick a theme or character and we will custom-make your party bags, with unique keepsake hand-crafted tags. We also make sweetie cones, pass the parcels, and more. Great prices from £1.50 per bag. Find us on Facebook: party bags for kids - Milton Keynes

How do you juggle being a mum and a business owner?
What have been the biggest challenges?
I won’t kid you, since having my children the lifework balance of being self-employed has been a constant juggling act and has more often than not been at the cost of time for myself. It’s getting easier now Oliver is at pre-school every morning and Harvey is at nursery three days, but I miss both my boys every day. I work while they’re in childcare, still some nights and most weekends. All balls are in the air at all times – it’s a busy life and often stressful and to be honest, the pay isn’t great when you think of all the hours I put in. But would I change it? Not for the world! I love my family and I love my work.
Getting it all done, on time, around my children. The price of silver has pushed up my costs greatly, but I’ve still managed to make it all work for my customers.
What have been the biggest highs for you? Managing to not only maintain my business when I had my second child, but also having my best year in 15 years of business. Oh, and being rated number 1 product for ‘Bump, Baby & Beyond‘ in the UK by Vogue. That was pretty special!
What advice would you give to mums thinking about starting their own business? Start slowly, plan well and arrange some childcare for your own sanity! It has to be one of the hardest roles, being a self-employed working mum. But you know what…it is so rewarding. Don’t worry about being perfect, just do the best you can. In a few years my little ones will be at school full time and won’t want mummy cuddling them every two minutes – I do my best to enjoy my boys while they are young. I do my best to provide a happy home for my whole family. I do my best to deliver a fantastic personalised product at the right price, on time and with exceptional service. I simply just do the best I can.
To see Kirstie’s product range, visit www.knrjewellery.co.uk. You can order your own silver fingerprint jewellery online and then create your impression by post – simply return the impression by post and Kirstie will make your jewellery for you. Alternatively, call 01295 271051 to make an appointment or visit her at an event (list on her website). All orders are ready within 2 weeks.
