Discomania’s Charity Discos

Discomania do a lot of great work for charity, and for 2012/13 they are supporting Genesis Research Trust who find cures & preventions against illnesses that happen during & after pregnancy & in newborn babies. Getting the most

out of Nursery

It’s rather daunting to think that the average child will spend roughly half their waking week at nursery. You are effectively sharing the education and care of your child with your nursery, so it is vitally important that once you have chosen the right nursery for your children, you build a strong, lasting relationship with your nursery setting. In doing so, you will be able to share observations, goals and ideas to help your child get the most from their nursery experience – and you will also be able to raise concerns in a constructive way if and when they arise. But striking the right balance can be tricky, and it is not uncommon for parents to be unsure about how they can help their child get the most from their time at nursery.

So what can you do to build a great relationship with your nursery? Find out about the nursery curriculum and its approach to care Understanding what goes on at nursery is the first step to being able to influence it. We recommend you attend any Parent’s Evenings or Open Evenings that your nursery holds – these are a great opportunity to discuss how your child is getting on and to collectively iron out any issues that may have arisen. At Akeley Wood, we host two parent’s evenings and one open evening each year – among other things, we use these events to explain how we track a child’s progress (for example, we use a Learning Journey book), and they give you a great chance to see the nursery environment as well as creative work displays. We also encourage our parents to attend the Information Evenings that we hold twice a year, where parents can come along to learn about our curriculum and how we implement it.

Communicate Regularly and Openly The key here is regular communication. Communicate when things are going well and you’ll have a strong relationship in place to let you solve any problems that may arise as a team. We encourage our parents to spend time at the end of each day chatting to their child’s key person to find out how their day has been, but we appreciate this can be difficult when you’re in a rush, so we have a Communication Day Book in which parents can share comments, questions or concerns with the carers on a daily basis.

We also have a Comment Box, which parents can use to make their comments, suggestions or questions directly to the Nursery Manager or Head teacher who respond on a weekly basis.

Get Involved! Your nursery will most likely have plenty of activities that you can take advantage of to get involved. Being more involved will help you get to know the nursery and carers better, and it will also give you the knowledge and confidence – not to mention the opportunity – to make suggestions and become a central part of your child’s nursery experience. We invite special people in our children’s lives (parents, aunties, uncles or grandparents) to spend time in school for our Themed Nursery Days, joining in with a baking afternoon, a crafty morning, planting seeds in the vegetable patch or simply reading a story. We also have Wishing Boards on which children pin an activity they would like to do in nursery, after discussing it at home with mum and dad. And we have Achievement Trees and Ladybirds in all of our Nursery rooms - pupils take home a leaf or a spot and with their parents they talk about and write down a special achievement they have made at home. They bring this to Nursery and share these achievements with the class. How to... Child-Proof Your Home Top tips on how to make your home baby safe - by Kevin Searle from Baby Bee Safe Babies are quite possibly the biggest accident magnets in the world. Constantly discovering and learning, they have no concept of danger, so it’s vitally important that their home environment is a safe place for them to experiment, develop and grow. The first thing you need to do is work out where the risk areas are in your house. It might seem silly, but you should get down on your hands and knees and complete a risk assessment. Think like a child and remember that what is safe for an adult may well be dangerous to a baby. Here are some of the main danger areas we get asked to help with, and suggestions on how to make them safe:

Windows Low level or easy to reach windows should have their openings restricted to no more than 6.5 cms in order to prevent children from squeezing through the gap. Move furniture away from windows to prevent access by climbing.

Fires

Fireguards are another essential. Even if you don’t light the fire, it will still be a source of endless amusement to your child. Don’t worry if the traditional wire fireguards put you off - there are more stylish, modern alternatives available now too.

Remember No matter how you prepare your home, please remember that these safety measures are not a replacement for parental supervision and that all equipment should be regularly checked for functionality and effectiveness.

Cupboards All accessible cupboards should be secure. There are many types of cupboard locks and latches on the market, and different types will work for different units. Experts, such as our Baby Bee Safe fitters, have the experience to know which locks work where. Stairs are an obvious safety hazard for babies and toddlers, so stair gates are a must. The top gate should be fixed permanently to the wall for extra safety, whilst the gate at the bottom of the stairs can be of the pressure fit variety. There are many different types and size of gate available from standard metal latch gates, to auto-close, swing shut gates and fancy roller-style mesh gates that are almost invisible when not in use. Doors are dangerous for little fingers and accidents typically happen when a child leans against the hinged area of the door while the door is being closed. Finger guards will cover the hinged area of the door to prevent this, as will anti-slam and door stop devices which will stop doors slamming or closing completely. Drawers often contain items that should be kept away from your child and they also present a crush risk for little fingers, so ensure they are safe by fitting latches on all drawers. The Calpol Debate

Virtually all parents have given paracetamolbased medicines such as Calpol to their children when they have caught a fever or a bug of some kind. These medicines are typically the first port of call to help lower a temperature or ease different types of pain for our children and they are often recommended by doctors and health professionals as a safe and easy solution to stop babies and children being uncomfortable during an illness. However, the use of such medication has come into debate recently with some research indicating that the potential long term side-effects could outweigh the immediate benefits.

Relieves fever

Interferes with the body’s natural defences Although Calpol may benefit the child’s overall comfort, reducing the child’s temperature can interfere with the body’s natural defence system. A fever is the body’s way of fighting infection and is not necessarily a bad thing. Certain components of the immune system work better at a higher body temperature, and a fever actually helps to limit the growth of the germs that cannot grow well at higher temperatures. Children get over most infections in their own time as long as their fluid level is kept up and they are watched for signs of serious illness.

Young children are prone to getting a lot of fevers as they grow. Unfortunately, this can cause them a fair amount of discomfort. Contrary to popular speculation, it is not advisable for a young child to sweat out a very high fever. This is because their ability to control their body temperature is not yet developed. The NHS advises that the best way for them to recover is to keep cool and hydrated and lower their temperature.

Reduces chance of complications

Having a temperature is nature’s way of fighting off infections or bacteria. It rises when proteins (called pyrogens) are released by the white blood cells to help defend the body against illness. However, if a child’s temperature continues to escalate, it may cause problems such as dehydration or convulsions. Bringing down the overall body temperature reduces the risk of the child over-heating and such difficulties occurring.

Eases night time fevers

As body temperature goes up later in the day, a lot of children get fevers at night. Being hot and uncomfortable can prevent a child from having a restful night’s sleep which will inevitably affect parents as well. By giving a dosage of medicine such as Calpol, the child will be relieved from pain which will allow them, and you, to have a good night’s sleep.

Hitting the headlines recently was research suggesting that babies who were given frequent doses of medicine containing paracetamol were much more likely to develop asthma, hay fever and other allergies in later life. However, the NHS says this analysis was not conclusive and more in-depth research needs to take place. Current advice states that as long as the correct dosage is given, children’s medicines containing paracetamol are safe.

Can cause hyperactivity

To produce its pink colour, Calpol uses E122 which is a suspected carcinogen and is banned in Austria, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the US. E122 can lead to hyperactivity and the Hyperactive Children’s Support Group identifies it, along with E218 which is also used, as likely causes of mysterious and sudden cases of ADHD-like hyper-activity.

For Calpol... Relieves pain and discomfort

Choosing not to administer any medicine could leave a child distressed and in pain for a prolonged amount of time, whilst giving them Calpol or other temperature reducing medication means that the child can be pain-free and comfortable.

Recommended by doctors

If a child has a fever, the NHS suggests giving your child either children’s paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce their temperature and keep them comfortable. It’s also routinely recommended if your child is teething, has earache, or to relieve symptoms after vaccinations. These pains and illnesses usually clear up themselves after a few days and giving a child medication tackles the child’s pain in a quick and effective manner in the meantime.

The large number of E-numbers in Calpol can cause allergic reactions such as a rash, nausea or tiredness. If any of these side effects persist for more than 2-3 days, you should consult a doctor.

Alternatives to Paracetamol 1. Make sure you keep your child well hydrated when they’re ill. Encourage them drink little and often even if they are not thirsty. 2. Try giving a teething baby a frozen washcloth as something to chew on. Biting the cold object will help to soothe the gums. 3. A warm compress such as a heat pad or warm wash cloth whilst laying on their side can help to reduce the pain in a child with earache.

Medicine Guidelines • If you decide to give medicine to your child, make sure a measuring spoon or syringe is used rather than a teaspoon as these vary in size. • Read the dosage guidelines on the packaging and stick to them. Don’t give them any more. NICE recommends... • ...that antipyretic agents such as paracetamol and ibuprofen should be considered for children with a fever who appear distressed or unwell. They should not routinely be used with the sole aim of reducing body temperature in children with a fever who are otherwise well. • ...that either paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used to reduce temperature, but they should not be administered at the same. Nor should they be routinely given alternately to children with fever, though use of the other drug may be considered if the child doesn’t respond to the first one.

The right dosage is harmless

New dosage guidelines were issued for Calpol in late 2011 which caused a number of people to question its safety. You needn’t worry on this score however. The new guidelines, issued by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), say that dosages given in the past would not have caused children any harm - the guidelines have simply been updated to define more accurately the amount of paracetamol that should be given to children of different ages.

Can disrupt hormones Along with colouring and flavourings, Calpol uses a number of other additives that are suspected hormone disrupters if taken in large doses. These include E218 and E216 which were recently banned in Russia and E214 which has been banned in France and Australia.

May reduce the effectiveness of a vaccination

Research from the University of Defence in the Czech Republic has indicated that Calpol could limit how the immune system responds to vaccinations. A fever is a common side effect of an immunisation injection, but the study showed that if children were given Calpol to reduce their fever for 24 hours after the jab, then the numbers of antibodies created by their immune system was significantly reduced. This means that the effectiveness of the vaccine may be impacted. There have been calls from professionals for more research to be completed about this.

What is ‘Dangerously High’?

If a child’s temperature becomes dangerously high, the NHS advises you to contact your doctor or health visitor urgently. They suggest this would be at: • 38oC or over for babies under 3 months • 39oC or over for babies 3-6 months • For over 6 months, if they have a raised temperature and show other signs of being unwell.

Children Aren’t Selfish

If you want your child to be truly happy this Christmas, you may want to focus more on the presents they give away, than the presents that they receive, according to recent research. Psychologists at the University of British Colombia have found that toddlers are not as selfish as many people believe. The study by Dr. Lara Aknin asked toddlers under the age of two to give away treats to a puppet and then rated their reactions for signs of happiness. The researchers found that the children were happier giving treats to others than receiving treats themselves. Furthermore, the children were even happier when they gave away their own treats rather than an identical treat that didn’t belong to them. These findings support research showing similar responses in adults and suggest that the capacity to derive joy from helping others is deeply woven into human nature. The Impact of Weaning

Infants allowed to feed themselves with finger foods from the start of weaning (baby led weaning) are likely to eat more healthily

and be a more appropriate weight as they get older when compared to infants who are spoon-fed purees, says a study published in the BMJ. The findings are based on 155 children between the ages of 20 months and 6.5 years. More children in the spoon-fed group were overweight/obese than those in the baby led group, who tended to be an appropriate weight for their height, age, and gender. These differences were not explained by differences in birth weight, parental weight, or socioeconomic factors, all of which are likely to influence a child’s body mass index (BMI). I first came across Usborne Books when my mum bought some for my children from a local craft fair. The books were gorgeous and a big hit with my small children. She also picked up an information pack about starting your own home-based business selling these wonderful books. As an ex-teacher, passionate about children’s education, I was immediately hooked. The low start up cost of just £38 helped too. I really had nothing to lose! I sell the books through home parties, toddler groups, fetes and fairs and also schools - a real mixture of events. I like the variety that it offers, but also the flexibility. The commission rates are great and can be built up in stages from day one - you are in control of your own destiny. There are no targets, but some great incentives. I have been lucky enough to travel to wonderful places like Monaco, Mexico and Italy! The flexibility means that I can be around for my children. However, the best bit of this job is looking at the faces of children who have just received that brand new book and knowing that I am, book by book, making a difference to children’s education. Is your child ready for the next level of pre-school education? Is s/he ready for a more challenging, action-packed experience?

Come and visit the nursery and pre-school at Thornton College School for Girls. Following the EYFS programme, our approach to pre-school education is perfect for the enquiring mind. We combine educational play with literacy and numeracy and an exciting timetable of activities including French, cookery, ICT, ballet, music, PE and plenty of woodland walks and games in our beautiful grounds. Children have fun whilst learning and thoroughly enjoy this early stage of their educational journey.
