Spratton Hall Healing The World

Spratton Hall have won 1st place in DWSF Global Canvas Competition titled ‘We can heal our World’. 2000 schools entered from all around the world and Spratton Hall’s entry made by 200 of the pupils included poetry, stories, words, drawings, paintings, plaster casts, ceramics, paper-mache and cartography. This mixed media project was used to express their determination to create a sustainable future where life can flourish in harmony with the environment. SUNDAY 21st JUNE

Instructions:

Using the sponge, apply the blue paint to the sole of your little one’s foot. Press the foot down to make a footprint that has the toes at the bottom and the print on the left side of the front of your card. This is the body of your superhero.

You will need:

• Blank card and envelope • Blue, red and white paint • Felt tip pen • Old sponge and a brush • Glue and a googly eye (optional)

Apply the red paint to your child’s hand and press it down to create a handprint. This should be on the ‘back’ of your footprint and will be the cloak/wings for the superhero.

Tip: It is best to use a sponge or a brush to apply the paint to your child’s hand/foot so that you don’t load the print with too much paint – less is more in this case.

Using a brush or circular piece of sponge, paint on a circle for the head – mixing the white and red paint to make pink. Either glue on the googly eye or wait for the paint to dry and draw on an eye and smile. Draw on an arm. Write your personal message on the front of the card – We like: Daddy you are MY SUPERHERO.

Instructions:

Fold your card in half and draw half a heart (great for discussing symmetry with little ones). Use your peg to gauge the appropriate size of the heart.

A lovely twist on a traditional card, these butterflies look great clipped onto laptops or photo frames in the office.

You will need:

• A piece of card • Pipe cleaner, pom poms & googly eyes • A wooden peg • Glue, sticky tape and scissors • Felt tip pen

Glue your peg onto your heart and decorate the peg with your pom poms (we have found that pom poms don’t stick well with glue! So we always use double backed sticky tape). Stick your googly eyes onto the head.

Fold your pipe cleaner in half and stick it to the back for the antennae. Write your own message on the wings for Daddy.

Just So Festival: 21-23 August 2015 The Just So Festival is an annual weekend-long festival of creativity and adventure for children and their families, which provides an imaginative adventure with art, music, literature, theatre and comedy all entwined in the wondrous outdoor landscape of Rode Hall – famed for it’s stunning gardens and rolling parkland.

Described by The Guardian as “possibly the most family-friendly of the lot” and winners of Festival Kidz Gold Award for three years running Just So Festival has made its mark as a cultural highlight of the summer, creating memories treasured by families year-round. ton An exciting new project in Northamp bad! is d foo seeks to prove that not all junk Elsie’s Cafe is a Real Junk Food project run by the guys at Fruitful Abundance. They work with caterers and food chain suppliers to intercept good quality food that would otherwise go to waste. Often, food is discarded by companies if the food is mislabelled, overstocked or malformed. This is where Fruitful Abundance comes in to save the day! All the food coming into the kitchen at Elsie’s Cafe is donated free of charge direct from the manufacturers. The food may be reject, but is always perfectly edible. The team work with what they are given to create a menu of tasty treats that they can then offer up to customers at their cafe. Because the donations change from week to week the menu is always adapted to provide something new.

Elsie’s Cafe has a permanent home at the old labour club on Charles Street, Northampton which opens Tuesdays through to Thursdays from 10am – 2pm (last orders 1pm). They hope to be able to open every day by next year. The team have a strong ethos of asking customers to ‘pay as you feel’ rather than setting a price for their food. This way the food is always affordable. Those unfortunate enough not to have the means to buy food can always get a nutritious meal and can offer their skills in washing up or cutting vegetables as payment instead. Northamptonshire County Council is working with Fruitful Abundance to help create several pop up cafe events in the town centre throughout 2015 to help spread the message and get local people eating proper junk food.

Controlled Crying Does It Work? Should You Do It?

A look at the evidence

By Sarah Ockwell-Smith, Parenting Expert and Author of The Gentle Sleep Book eaving babies to cry for a predetermined period of time in order to teach themselves to fall asleep (or “self settle”) was introduced by Dr Emmett Holt in his 1895 book ‘The Care and Feeding of Children’. This idea was then popularised by Dr Richard Ferber (which gave rise to the term “Ferberisation”) in his 1985 book ‘Solve Your Child’s Sleep Problems’. Since then many baby care authors have picked up on the trend of leaving babies to cry for an increasing period in order to encourage them to get themselves to sleep and not wake in the night.

Does controlled crying work?

The answer to this is not simple. Whilst many parents report more unbroken sleep at night after three or four nights of sleep training, research has not found any long lasting positive effects. Indeed many parents report significant sleep regressions several months after trying the technique and experiencing initial positive effects. More importantly however is how we define ‘does it work?’ Controlled crying, and similar techniques, can initially make babies quiet throughout the night, which can often lead to better sleep for the parents for a limited period of time. When it comes to the baby though, it is unlikely sleep has changed at all. It is highly likely that the baby is still waking just as much as before, just no longer alerting his or her parents to the fact they have awoken. This may initially appear appealing, however it does throw up several alarming thoughts, in particular – what if the baby is in physical

distress and does not alert the parent? For instance if they have vomited or have a blanket over their face this has potential to be a SIDS risk. In addition is how parents really feel about the idea that their baby is awake and potentially hungry, lonely or scared, yet has been trained to know that there is no point in crying because their parent will not come to them. As a parent it is important to consider your long term parenting goals as well as those in the short term. A short term goal may be ‘to get a little more sleep to be able to enjoy my baby more’ and a long term goal may be ‘for my child to know that I am always here for them and that they can always come to me with their problems’. If we think about how controlled crying fits with these goals we can see that while it may help in the short term, in the long term it is often completely at odds with what we want for our children and in particular the type of relationship we would like with them. Most parents would like their children to know that they can rely on them to always be there, however what are we teaching a baby when we practice controlled crying on them?

the research findings

Of more concern is the long lasting psychological and physiological consequence of controlled crying. Sadly there is no definitive research either way and much work needs to be done before we can make any firm conclusions. What we do have though is a couple of studies we can work with. In 2012 researchers found that babies who have been trained to not cry out through use of controlled crying were not calm

Controversy Corner or ‘self soothed’ - their stress hormone levels actually remained just as elevated as the days previously when they cried a lot. Why if they were so distressed did they stop crying for their parent? The obvious assumption here is not because they had now learnt the advanced skill of ‘self soothing’, but that they had learnt it was futile to continue crying. Further research in the same year attempted to put to rest any assumption that controlled crying was ‘bad’ for infants and confidently published findings which stated that it caused no long lasting ill effects. The research however was full of significant flaws, such as failing to check if those in the experimental group had actually done controlled crying and failing to check if those in the control group (who were not meant to sleep train) actually did. It is highly likely the research was not actually measuring what it said it was. In addition the only attempts to investigate whether the controlled crying had caused any ill effects was to ask the parents their thoughts and to check stress hormone levels in the child’s saliva five year post sleep training, both of which are dubious measures at best. What research needs to look at is brain imaging – particularly in areas such as the hippocampus which is known to be affected by long term stress and to check other markers such as attachment style and cognitive ability. Sadly this research has not been done and until it is we are not able to say one way or the other that controlled crying is either safe or damaging to infants. The last issue with controlled crying is the gross misunderstanding those who advocate it have of a young baby’s brain and neurological development. Controlled crying presumes babies think logically and rationally and have the skills of emotional self regulation (which is what is really meant by ‘self soothing’). These skills however are far too complex for a small baby and even toddler. They are not skills that can be taught, they are developmental milestones, just like walking and talking. Sleep training a baby in order to teach them to ‘self soothe’ is as ludicrous as trying to teach a three month old to walk when we think of it in neurological terms. It just isn’t possible. When a baby is born their brain is incomplete - not only is it smaller than an adult’s brain, the vast majority of its 100 billion neurons are not yet connected into networks. Babies simply don’t think like we do – the neocortex, the home of logical thinking, does not really spring into life until 3 years plus. Before that, a baby’s brain is very primal, focused on survival and basic emotions. That said, early experiences can and do have a big impact on the wiring of an infant’s

brain - a baby’s brain has twice as many synapses (connections) as the child will eventually need. If these synapses are used repeatedly they are reinforced. If they are not used repeatedly, they are eliminated. Therefore we can cause permanent changes in the brain structure of our children, both good and bad. Depriving a baby of the love and contact they need in infancy alters the neuroplasticity of the brain, changing the wiring in the relationship part of the brain which affects the individual’s experience of relationships long into adulthood. Research on the impact of early attachments confirms that warm, responsive care giving is essential to healthy brain development and ironically, those babies who were allowed to be attached as a baby are the ones that can truly self settle as older children and adults.

in Conclusion

This is one topic that science cannot definitively give us an answer for, however it is important to remember that at this stage having ‘no evidence of harm’ is not the same as having ‘evidence of no harm’. In my opinion, the best guidance for parents considering controlled crying and other forms of sleep training is to trust their instinct. How do they feel about leaving their child to cry for several hours per night for several nights? How does the technique fit with their long term parenting goals? Would they like to be treated in the same way by somebody else? In the end we usually find our best answers this way.

On one hand we are being told that children need to be ‘better prepared for school’ while on the other being asked to reflect on whether our children are being ‘pushed into formal education too early.’ As an Early Years Professional and Primary Drama Specialist I believe that there is a clear middle ground. I don’t think there is one Nursery Teacher I know who would not want their children to start Reception being able to communicate, hold a pencil correctly and begin to recognise numbers but the need for children to develop strong personal, social and emotional skills is equally as important. I believe that drama is an excellent tool which can be used to empower children of all ages. It can provide them with the rich and imaginative learning experiences they need to become independent thinkers, yet at the same time can be used to help children apply what they have learnt in Literacy and Numeracy in ‘real life’ situations.

Creating a dramatic play area that is inviting is key! The best role play areas are those which have been developed with the child’s interests in mind and are regularly changed or reinvented to keep the excitement and interest fresh. As a parent you can be continually involved in role play activities at home, whether it is pretending to be a pet or animal, a princess locked in a castle, or a passenger on your child’s train. These opportunities for dramatic play are invaluable and impact on your child’s development in four main areas; social/emotional, cognitive, physical and language. At the nursery and pre-school at Akeley Wood, we maximise these learning opportunities by ensuring that when taking part in imaginative play, children have access to the following:

• A combination of real and make-believe objects. At first children will imitate adults but as they become more confident in their play they will use objects in a more abstract way, such as the wooden spoon that becomes a magic wand!

• A mixture of adult and child dressing up clothes. What’s more fun than putting on your mum’s high heels, or your dad's work tie and stomping around the house?

• A range of writing materials - pencils, chalk,

whiteboards and pens for those shopping lists and other mark making opportunities.

• Other age appropriate resources that are

engaging and can be used independently.

So next time your child complains that they are bored or has nothing to play with from their bedroom full of toys, think about what you have around the house. With a touch of imagination you could help your child create one of the most valuable learning experiences of all. FANCY A DIP? Tips for swimming with your bab y

Swimming provides one of the best forms of exercise for both you and your baby, and is just as perfect for cold winter days as it is for hot summer ones. The main thing to consider when taking very young children swimming is that the water temperature needs to be cosy warm (32 degrees for babies under 12lbs or 12 weeks; 30 degrees for everyone else). And the good news is there’s no minimum age to start your baby swimming; they don’t need to have had any immunisations before they go. ‘Just half an hour’s swimming will provide your baby or toddler with a complete work out,’ says Tamsin Brewis who runs Water Babies classes in Buckinghamshire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire & Oxfordshire. ‘They’ll be exercising muscles they’d never even find on land! Swimming’s great for enhancing their confidence and awareness, as well as helping to improve eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus!’ Whether swimming in winter or summer, a baby wetsuit is always a good idea – a toasty baby is going to be infinitely happier than a chilly one! Do make sure you put your baby in it at the start of the session;

it’s very easy to take it off if your baby gets too hot. However, if they start getting too cold, putting anything on them at that stage will do little to make them warmer, so it’s good to be cautious from the start. Once you’re in the pool, keep your baby gently moving all the time: bouncing across the water, swinging them round, singing nursery rhymes as you go. You’ll find they respond really positively, especially as they’ll love sharing such special one-to-one time with you. However, if your baby’s still very small, don’t be surprised if they don’t appear to be remotely interested in what you’re doing at first, as there’ll be a huge amount of other stimulating things attracting their attention! At the end of every session, wrap them in a dry towel and place them somewhere safe whilst you get changed. By the time you’re ready they’ll be warm and dry, so getting them dressed will be a much easier and more relaxing process. Make sure there’s no water remaining in their ears, then, finally, pop a hat on your tired but happy little one, who’ll hopefully be snuggling down for a good sleep as you prepare to leave the pool. Swimming with your baby is a great way to play and is fantastic for strengthening the bond between the two of you. It will also introduce them to a lifelong love of staying healthy and fit, whilst having a great time too! What could be better?

Why Rachel Lalljee turned her back on The Apprentice to spend more time with her children.

Changing career after having children can be a big, scary step. Local mum Rachel Lalljee knows all about that. She left her career in TV, most notably working as a producer on Alan Sugar’s show The Apprentice, to become a full-time mum and is now re-launching her career as a Personal Trainer. She told us her story…

What was it like working on The Apprentice? Probably exactly as you’d imagine – exciting, intimidating and incredibly hard work. Life is put on hold for a programme like that. Lord Sugar is exactly as you see him on television. He’s honest, sharp, doesn’t suffer fools and niceties are certainly of little interest to him. I just prayed each day that I wasn’t the fool that he wouldn’t suffer! I remember returning from a shoot one night at 2am. We had a boardroom at 7am the same day so, as the producer of that shoot, I stayed up for another few

hours preparing the figures from the advertising task, working out which team had won etc. I handed in all the documentation only to be called in to Sir Alan’s office where he announced, ‘You’re one pence out in the total column’.

Was it hard giving up your TV career to become a mum? Yes and no. I didn’t go to university and I didn’t have children until I was almost 40, so I’d been working hard for many years. My job in television production was all encompassing, so I knew that there was no way I could continue with it and bring up my children the way I wanted to. Moving on was scary, but I have no regrets at all.

Why Personal Training? I’ve always been sporty, but when I had children they were my focus and I didn’t do any exercise or sport for about three years. And it showed! When I finally dragged myself back into being active, there was no going back. It changed my mood and outlook and I felt that I could pass this on to others who may feel stuck in a rut – so I decided to do a diploma in Advanced Personal Training.

Tell us about re-training. Has it been difficult? The course I chose offered blended learning (e-learning mixed with face to face). This allowed me to be with the children and do my study during the day when they were at school. At times the face to face part of the study has been challenging as it happens at the weekends. So ensuring that my husband (who works abroad a lot) or the “Out-Laws” were here to cover for me was important. The course included a huge amount of homework plus a lot of exams. I found that nerve-racking and

tough but got through it. The best part of the course was that no-one knew me. No one spoke to me about children or family - I had a little part of my life that was just my own.

Has it been worth it?

I very much enjoy being an individual human being again – not just a mother or wife! I love what I do and I also feel very strongly that it’s important for my children to see me as an independent, capable, active person. I’m happy that they now ask me about my clients and how my day went rather than just, ‘What’s for tea?’ I feel more confident and happy doing personal training than I ever did working in television. Come along to GymBugs, and along with our qualified pre-school coaches, you can assist your child to explore wonderful and exciting equipment such as ladders, beams and climbing apparatus whilst beginning to learn the basic skills of gymnastics. For the older children, there are more structured classes where they are taken around the apparatus by the coaches in small groups and slightly more difficult gymnastics skills are practiced. There will also be a chance in this lesson to partake in the British Gymnastics award schemes.
