Opens Stage's Spring Term for Tots

Open Stage's next five-week courses are due to begin in April. Multi Sensory Hoo-Ha! course for newborns to new walkers includes sensory lights, bubbles, percussion and songs and actions, all accompanied by a live musician - it takes place on Wednesdays from 18th April to 16th May and Fridays from 20th April to 18th May. Easter Activities

Easter Sunday 1st April

Chick Cake

In a Jar

You’ll need a few items: • Sponge Cake Ingredients or Cake Mix (Buy a cake mix or follow your usual cake recipe)

• Yellow Food Colouring (Wilton colour gel) • Jars (Baby food jars are a perfect size) • Googly Eyes, Feathers, Orange Paper

1. Make some cake mixture, following your usual cake recipe, or the instructions with your cake mix.

5. Wait for the cakes to cool down, then put the lids on the jars to keep the cake fresh.

2. Add yellow food colouring to the cake mixture, stirring it in until the mixture is a bright yellow.

6. Now the really fun bit! Turn the cake jars into chicks before eating them. Fold a square of orange paper in half to make a beak and then stick it to the jar along with two googly eyes and two feathers.

3. Spoon the mixture into the jars, so they are about ¼ full. 4. Now cook the cake mixture. Put the jars into the microwave one at a time for 30 seconds (timing will depend on the size of your jar). Or, if the jars are oven proof, you can bake them in the oven following the recipe you are using.

This was such an easy activity, but so much fun, and who doesn’t love a craft they can eat!

You’ll need a few items: • • • • •

Plastic eggs Little chicks Shredded paper Feathers Foam chicks and eggs

This Hatching Chick Spring Sensory Bin is great for imaginative play, learning to count and exploring different textures. The best bit is hatching the plastic easter eggs to see how many chicks are inside each egg!

1. Take the basket and fill it with as many different textures as you can for your little one to explore. We used shredded paper, feathers, foam eggs and chicks, but anything safe for children to handle can be used. 2. Fill the plastic eggs with little chicks (available from many shops around Easter time). Mix up the number of chicks that you place in each egg to make each one a surprise. 3. Let your child explore! They will have a great time collecting and hatching the plastic eggs. Encourage them to count the chicks in each egg. Once they have hatched all the chicks let them enjoy some imaginative play with all the goodies.

How to promote physical activity at home and aid your child’s development By Mrs Masnica, Teacher of Early Years PE, Quinton House School

The benefits of physical activity in the early years are well documented; from bone and muscle development to the development of the brain, cognitive skills and emotional wellbeing. In more recent years, sport has been at the frontline in combating childhood obesity throughout a child’s lifetime.

So how can parents help develop the right habits early on? 1. Co-ordination – developing a child’s co-ordination is hugely important as this will help improve their gross motor skills. Throwing and catching a bean bag or ball, or even rolling a ball to them as they sit on the floor and instructing them to stop the ball, helps improve their hand-eye co-ordination. Kicking a ball will also improve foot-eye co-ordination which will, in turn, have a positive effect on a child’s balance. It doesn’t matter what equipment you use – throwing and catching a teddy has the same benefits as using a ball. 2. Balance – doing anything that improves a child’s balance and core strength will be hugely beneficial to them long term. This could include jumping off the last step as they go down the stairs, landing on their feet with their knees bent, staying upright. Anything that involves them jumping and landing safely, without falling over, is key. Balancing on one leg or hopping on one leg will help improve this. This can be done as easily as hopping or jumping from one paving slab to another while out for a walk, or playing hop-scotch.

3. Dance – children can develop their creativity and have fun through dance. Children often love just wriggling around and moving their arms and legs, listening to the music and doing what comes naturally to them. This can be a fun way of exercising without a child even realising they are taking part in physical activity. 4. Mud! – This may sound surprising but in today’s society, many children develop a fear of mud and try to avoid getting dirty when playing outside. If they understand that it is OK to get muddy while taking part in a physical activity, they are less likely to worry about it, and will be more inclined to join in and take part in outdoor sports and activities. At a very young age it is vital we give our children an understanding that physical activity is fun! The physical activity they experience at an early age will decide whether they enjoy sport in their later years or develop a dislike of it. There are so many opportunities available, with a wide selection of activities to choose from, there will be something for everyone.

Mrs Masnica is a Teacher of Early Years PE at Quinton House School in Upton. Quinton House is an independent, broadly non-selective school for girls and boys aged 3-16, where specialist PE teaching starts as early as Reception and pupils have the opportunity to participate in a number of PE activities that improve their ABC’s (ability, balance and co-ordination), such as dance, game play, athletics, and outdoor and adventurous activities. SURROGACY TO HAVE A CHILD

There has been a lot of talk about surrogacy in the news in recent weeks. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West announced the arrival of their third child who was born thanks to a surrogate. More recently, Tom Daley and his husband Dustin Lance Black announced that they are expecting a child through surrogacy. These high-profile cases bring surrogacy into the spotlight, but they often bring up more questions than they answer. So what is surrogacy really all about? How does it work, who uses a surrogate and why would a woman carry a baby for another couple?

What is Surrogacy? Surrogacy is a way for a childless person to become a parent, with a surrogate carrying their child. People who want to have a child in this way are referred to as intended parents, or IPs. It is an amazing gift from a surrogate and her family to a person who, for many reasons, is not able to conceive a child themselves. It can be a wonderfully rewarding experience for everyone involved. For surrogates, it is a chance to do something truly extraordinary and create a family for someone else. For those who are unable to have children by any other means, surrogacy can be a light at the end of a very long tunnel.

Who Needs a Surrogate? Usually the woman (or ‘intended mother’) cannot conceive, or carry a child to term, due to a medical issue. Some common reasons why people may look into surrogacy are: • Recurrent miscarriages • Repeated failure of IVF treatment • Premature menopause, often as a result of cancer treatment • A hysterectomy, or an absent or abnormal uterus GPs and fertility doctors are now recommending surrogacy more frequently to women who experience these problems, due to surrogacy becoming more recognised, and a more trusted way of achieving a family.

Since April 2010 it has also been possible for same-sex couples to undertake surrogacy in the UK, and these couples make up about 50% of those successfully becoming a family through surrogacy. Surrogacy is fast becoming an accepted pathway to parenthood for many people in the UK and, with more women coming forward to act as a surrogate, the numbers of children born through surrogacy are only set to rise.

Is Surrogacy Legal? Altruistic surrogacy is legal in the UK. This means that a woman cannot be paid to be a surrogate – she may only receive reasonable expenses to cover the costs that she incurs in being pregnant for her intended parents. These expenses can range from loss of earnings to childcare, maternity clothes and extra food during the term of the pregnancy. A surrogate’s expenses will depend on her personal circumstances such as type of job, number of children and distance from her intended parents. Other legal requirements are that all parties must be domiciled in the UK, and that at least one of the intended parents are genetically related to the child that is conceived. Currently, single people are unable to access surrogacy as the law states that intended parents must be married or in a long term relationship. This is set to change this year however due to legal reform, citing that single people can legally access surrogacy and apply for a parental order (the legal document giving parental responsibility to their child). The intended parents are usually involved in the birth, acting as the surrogate’s birth partner, ready to spend time having skin to skin contact with their newborn baby. In some cases an intended mother may be able to induce lactation and feed her baby herself.

Advertising for a surrogate is not allowed, nor is advertising to be a surrogate, which makes it increasingly difficult for those looking into surrogacy to find a surrogate. Becoming part of a surrogacy organisation can be a way for surrogates and intended parents to meet each other without having to advertise.

What Happens After the Birth? After the birth, the intended parents take their child home while the surrogate enjoys some well-deserved rest. Contact between the intended parents and the surrogate continues - the friendship created between them is often lifelong and doesn’t end when the baby arrives.

How Does it Work? There are two types of surrogacy: ‘straight’ and ‘host’. Straight (or traditional) surrogacy is the simplest and least expensive form of surrogacy and is also known as artificial insemination. The surrogate uses an insemination kit to become pregnant using the intended father’s semen. The baby will therefore be conceived using the surrogate’s egg.

Becoming the Legal Parents At the moment of birth, the woman who gives birth to a child is regarded as the legal mother, regardless of the child’s genetic origins. Her husband/partner, if she has one, is regarded as the legal father. If the surrogate is unmarried however then the genetic parent can be named on the birth certificate.

Some people prefer to use a clinic for inseminations, but it can also happen at home and can therefore seem a more natural and less ‘medical’ way of becoming pregnant than host surrogacy. It can, however, be harder emotionally for both the surrogate and the intended parents. Host (or gestational) surrogacy is when IVF is used, either with the eggs of the intended mother, or with donor eggs. The surrogate therefore does not use her own eggs, and is genetically unrelated to the baby. It is physically more complicated and considerably more expensive than straight surrogacy (although many IPs can have some costs covered by the NHS), and always takes place in a fertility clinic. Some surrogates prefer this method as they may not be comfortable with using their own eggs in surrogacy.

Are the Intended Parents Involved in the Pregnancy? When a surrogate falls pregnant, the intended parents are encouraged to be involved in the pregnancy - after all, it is their child. Midwife appointments and scans etc. are normally attended by everyone, with the surrogate providing updates on baby’s movements and kicks on an ongoing basis. Surrogacy works best when there is trust and friendship involved, so they normally get together throughout the pregnancy a lot, with lots of time spent with each other’s families. It is an exciting time for all involved and is treated like a normal pregnancy throughout.

So the intended parents need to apply for a parental order. Parental orders are there to address parenthood issues following surrogacy. Like an adoption order, a parental order reassigns parenthood, extinguishing the parental status of the surrogate parents, and conferring full parental status and parental responsibility to the Intended Parents.

Why Would Someone Want to be a Surrogate? Most surrogates feel great empathy for intended parents who, for whatever reason, cannot carry a child of their own. They know the great joy their children have given them and want intended parents to experience this joy too. It is usually just as simple as that: it sounds extraordinary, but it’s true. A surrogates’ bond is with her intended parents, not the baby. The friendship sustained during the surrogacy process ensures that a surrogate has no desire to keep a child born through surrogacy. The baby doesn’t feel like the surrogates’ own child, and lots of surrogates report that a surrogate pregnancy is very different from their own pregnancies. Watching a previously childless parent with their child is such a positive experience for surrogates, it usually means that a surrogate rarely does it only once.

She gave birth to her first surrogate baby in 2004, the second in 2005 and after completing her own family, returned to give birth to her third surrogate baby in 2013 and a fourth in 2016. Seems to be the Hardest Word…

How many times do we ask our children to say they are sorry? How many times do we ‘make’ children apologise for something they have said or done? As a parent and a teacher, I always ‘ask’ children to say sorry, although I insist on taking it a step further. I ask children to be specific. Saying sorry is easy and doesn’t really mean anything if it’s not linked to what you are sorry for. When children are specific with their apology, they are actually thinking about what they have done and whether it was a good choice.

But what about adults?

I’m a parent – we’re only human! We have bad days when we are less tolerant than usual or even a tad grumpy! However, if we can hold our hands up and say sorry to our children, then they can learn from us. Your apology might sound a bit like this:

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound grumpy, I’m not feeling well today and I’m having a bad day. I shouldn’t have reacted that way towards you. I’m sorry.”

So, for example, “I’m sorry for hitting Billy with my pencil case.” But what about adults? Should we apologise to our children when we get it wrong? It’s funny how hard it can be to say sorry when you’re the parent. As adults, we often feel that our children should do as they’re told – without question. And we really don’t like to admit when we’re wrong. We might feel that backing down and compromising will send the wrong message to our children - it might reduce our authority, or let them feel that “they have got away with it”. However, I believe we should ALWAYS be prepared to apologise for our behaviour. And we should say sorry specifically for something we have said or done, in exactly the same way our children should. We know that children learn from their experiences and from the people around them. So, if what they see around them in their world are good role models who are saying sorry and admitting when they are wrong, then that is the behaviour that they will emulate.

When we say sorry for our behaviour and can admit that we are wrong, children learn empathy, it builds a bond of trust and respect within the relationship and it also helps to de-escalate the situation. When we apologise, our children see this as us being fair and that we are trying to understand and listen to them. Children also learn that when they have moments where their emotions are ‘out of control,’ that it is normal and, in fact, adults experience similar issues and have learnt how to manage their emotions. They see that they can do the same. As an adult, saying sorry benefits everyone. It helps to develop children’s social development and enhances their ability to self-regulate their behaviour. It demonstrates the need to consider other people’s feelings. So, next time you find yourself in conflict with your child, think,

“Am I in the wrong?”, And remember the power of saying sorry…

BYE BABY AN INTRODUCTION TO UNDERSTANDING YOUR BABY’S SLEEP PATTERNS

The issue of sleep when there’s a new baby in the house can be such a pressing need that any advice offering a glimmer of hope seems to be worth a try. It is the “magic diet pill” or “elixir of youth” subject for many parents that leaves us vulnerable to spending money on books and seeking advice that may or may not be helpful and actually may just make us feel guilty and inadequate. There is no guarantee that what “worked” for someone else’s baby is going to work for your unique (and very special) baby. If you are looking for a magic solution here to get back to sleeping like you did before you had a baby then look away now. But, if you would like to start to understand why babies sleep like they do and a little about normal sleep development then read on…

Why do babies sleep like they do? There are many factors that affect how well and how long a baby will sleep. One fact that is inescapable is the size of their little tummies of course but there are other factors to consider… Babies’ brain activity during sleep is different from adults. A baby has a shorter sleep cycle than an adult of about 60 minutes and, like adults, different phases of sleep. An adult will drop pretty quickly into deep “quiet” or “restorative” sleep within a few minutes of falling asleep, but a baby will spend about 20 minutes in REM sleep or “active” sleep first. During this active sleep period the brain is

busy making new neural connections and growing. Babies who sleep within an hour of learning something new are much more likely to retain that knowledge (a great reason for reading at bedtime). During the REM phase of sleep, a baby can easily be wakened. It is not fully understood why some babies wake more frequently than others but there are lots of theories! Possible reasons are hunger, separation anxiety, learning new skills and waking with the urge to practice them, and of course, teething or other discomforts. Learning your baby’s cues and understanding more about different development stages can help you respond to your baby’s needs in the night. To fully understand why babies sleep like they do and to make sure you set realistic expectations it is also worth considering how we evolved too. “Anthropologists think about human babies differently to most other people … Western baby-care practices are rather recent developments, and the biology of human babies expects something rather different than 21st century families might provide.” – Infant Sleep Information Source.
