Our Real Family Holiday in Orielton, Pembrokeshire, August 2017. Last August we had an amazing holiday with Real Family Holidays, who have sites in stunning locations across the UK - we were in Pembrokeshire in Wales. We loved it, and I think you might too. Let me tell you why… Firstly, these holidays are stress-free. They are full board, so there is no cooking or washing up to do, and no food shopping. Hooray! The buildings are in some of the most beautiful parts of the UK, and the grounds are safe with plenty of space to play and explore. The day trips were amazing. From our base in Pembrokeshire, we swam in the sea and built sandcastles; the children learned to be knights at Pembroke castle; we saw a Bird of Prey display; went crabbing; and enjoyed a boat-trip to Cromer island. There was so much to do.

Real Family Holidays are all about encouraging people to discover and experience the natural world and they offer a free (optional) daily activity for families to enjoy that gets everyone outside, enjoying nature. As a result, we took part in mammal trapping, a bat walk, a mini-beast hunt, orienteering and a bonfire evening to name just a few activities.

So what’s the catch?! Well, the first thing to cover is that whilst the accommodation is very comfortable, it isn’t luxurious. Real Family Holidays are run by the Field Studies Council which means that during the year, these same buildings are used for school field trips. So, for the most part, you’ll be sleeping in bunkbeds and your family will all be in the same room. One of our fellow holiday-makers described it to me as “really posh camping” – which sums it up pretty well. Written By Tim Freed

But the main thing that will turn some people off this holiday, is exactly the same thing that really made it for us – it’s the communal nature of the holiday. You get the privacy of your own bedroom and everyone tends to go off on their own for day trips, but other than that, the rest of the holiday is very much a shared experience. Everyone eats together, the living rooms are all communal, and you enjoy the activities together as a group... That’s not to say you can’t find some private space - the buildings and grounds are BIG - but if you want to cut yourself off from the rest of humanity for a week, then this isn’t the holiday for you. For us, the chance to meet new people and make new friends was the aspect of the holiday that we most enjoyed. The children had made friends within minutes of our arrival, and we weren’t far behind. The very first evening we spent enjoying a bottle of wine in the sunshine on the front lawn with some of the other parents, whilst children of all sizes ran around soaking each other in a water fight.

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6. Line a muffin tin with 12 paper cases. 2. Sift the flour, spices and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl, then add the sugar. In a separate bowl, combine the eggs, syrup and oil, then pour them into the bowl with the dry ingredients.

ONCE BITTEN... How to help a child

THAT BITES By Anne Goldsmith - Positive Behaviour Consultant & Parenting

Being a parent isn’t easy for anyone, but having a child who bites makes it all the more challenging. It’s embarrassing and can lead to you and your child being excluded from playdates and parties. It will probably feel like your child will never change their behaviour. But it can be done. Child behaviour expert Anne Goldsmith explains how… I first encountered childhood biting when my son was about 2½ years old. We were at a toddler group where the mums were chatting happily and the children playing nicely. Suddenly, the peace was shattered by loud screaming. A child came running to his mum saying that one of the girls had bitten him. He showed us his arm – with definite teeth marks, bright red and already with a bruise forming.

After dealing with the immediate repercussions, we decided that we needed to take a step back and remove our emotions from the situation (as difficult as that was). We wanted to observe our daughter so that we could try to understand the reason for her behaviour. We looked for patterns in her behaviour and considered what had happened prior to the biting incident.

At the time, I remember being shocked and horrified. “How could a child do that?” I thought, “How could their mum let them do that?” Typical responses, looking back now. But it was another couple of years before I realised that it really wasn’t that simple…

As we came to know our daughter and understand her ‘ways,’ we soon discovered that biting was her quick and easy way of expressing herself. She was young and unable to articulate how she felt, which made her feel frustrated, so she used the quickest and most effective response she knew – to bite!

When our second child was just over a year old, she started to bite. The first time it happened, we were on holiday and we were coming to the end of a fun day having enjoyed some real, quality family time. I was getting both of our children changed on the bed after swimming. They were lying side by side very happily. Then, quite suddenly, my daughter bit her brother. It was awful. I couldn’t believe what I’d seen.

Why, after such a lovely time, had our daughter bitten her big brother?

They Don’t Have the Words Children bite for different reasons. It can be caused by anything from anger or frustration to boredom, jealousy or sadness. They may be desperate for attention, unfamiliar with how to interact with their peers, or it may be a learned response to get what they want. If they have been doing it for a while, it may have simply become a habit. But the most common reason is frustration. If a child doesn’t have the language to express how they are feeling in a given situation – say, when another child picks up a toy that they wanted to play with - they will feel frustrated. Biting is a quick way to express themselves without words. And it typically provokes a big reaction, which reinforces how effective it is. Jan - Mar 2018 Toddle About Northamptonshire 25

Working out why your child resorts to biting in certain situations must come before any attempt to change your child’s behaviour. This takes priority over the act of biting itself. It may not seem that way as the parent or, indeed, as the parent of the victim. However, until the cause is established, changing the behaviour is virtually impossible.

What to Do If Your Child Bites This is the hard part – as parents, we must remain completely calm and take the emotion out of the situation. I know that’s incredibly difficult when you are faced with such an emotionally charged situation, but it’s crucial.

“Bite Your Child Back” When their child bites, many parents will receive the advice to bite their child back - so “They know how it feels.” Of course, we want to teach our children how to empathise and see things from other people’s point of view. But consider this… If you are trying to stop your child from biting other children, yet bite them to teach them a lesson, then isn’t that simply reinforcing that biting people is acceptable?

As parents, it’s our job to teach and guide them.

Staying calm will help to de-escalate the situation and will calm things down. It would be easy to respond to your child’s biting by yelling or getting angry with them, but remember - you are your child’s role model. They look to you when trying to figure out how to behave in certain situations. In short, they copy your behaviour and responses. Which brings us neatly on to…

As parents, we must show self-control – despite the feelings of guilt and embarrassment that will threaten to swamp us in this situation. If it helps, remember that your child is trying to make sense of their world, and for some children this can be an extremely challenging time.

Lowering your voice, instead of raising it, is an effective way to handle this situation. It also helps to make looking after the victim your priority, thereby giving less attention to your own child – it lets your child know that they won’t get your attention when they bite. You could say, “I’m looking after Billy – I need you to wait calmly. I’m helping Billy first to make sure he is OK. When I have finished making sure Billy is OK, I expect you to have stopped crying.” Once your child has calmed down and you return to him/her, you can say,

If your child finds it difficult to calm down, walk away (to a distance that is age-appropriate) and ignore your child and their tantrum. This will usually stop the tantrum, because your child doesn’t have your attention or an audience. When your child has settled, that’s a good time to talk to them about their biting. It’s OK to praise them and say, “Thank you for calming yourself down.” This is good positive reinforcement. Keeping your voice calm and steady, you should then explain that biting is wrong. Tell them you don’t think they would like it if someone was to bite them – it hurts – a lot. Also, let them know there are consequences when they bite. It might be sending them to a place where they sit for time out (if they are a younger child) or, if you are out, removal from the fun and missing out. You will have to repeat this rule and consequence frequently to reinforce its importance. The key is to keep things simple, clear, have consequences and most importantly be calm and consistent. Always remember, the best example of acceptable behaviour is you and your child takes their lead from the way you respond and how you behave.

BEARS DON’T EAT EGG SANDWICHES BY JULIE FULTON

Reviewer: Sarah Pickering This book is about a little boy who has an unexpected, hungry visitor for lunch. Jack loves egg sandwiches and keenly offers these to the bear, to which the bear repeatedly cries ‘Bear’s don’t eat egg sandwiches’. Jack needs to find out what the bear does like to eat. My daughter (4) really enjoyed this book. I asked her what she thought the bear might like to eat and she replied ‘honey’. She was very surprised to find out what the bear wanted to eat. I love a book that provokes a belly laugh!

ERIC MAKES A SPLASH

BY EMILY MACKENZIE Reviewer: Susannah Twemlow When Eric receives an invitation to a pool party, he is sent into a worrying whirl. What if his fur gets wet? What if water goes in his eyes? With a little help from his fearless best friend, Eric is brave enough to enjoy the swimming party, have fun and swim without his armbands. My son (3) really enjoyed this book. It’s an imaginative story teaching children to be positive to overcome worries and the importance of friendship. Highly recommend.

I AM ACTUALLY A PENGUIN BY SEAN TAYLOR

Reviewer: Beki Bradley This is a fun-packed, laugh out loud story about a cheeky little girl who loves her penguin outfit so much she believes she’s actually a real one. She doesn’t want to take the outfit off so embarks on daily adventures telling everyone she meets that she is a real penguin! My daughters (5 and 2) loved the larger than life illustrations and my eldest giggled along to the story right to the end. A lovely, light-hearted book for cheeky little ones out there.

Great colourful illustrations, perfect for our son (18 mth) who loves any transport or diggers! The story is to be sung to the tune of Baa, Baa, Black Sheep, half way through I lost the flow, but that didn’t stop my son wanting it read over and over again!

OH NO! WHERE DID WALTER GO? BY JOANNA BOYLE

Reviewer: Sophie Weeks This is a story of two friends and their game of hide and seek. Something goes wrong and Walter goes missing. This leads to an exciting adventure, as the two friends try to find each other again. We enjoyed reading this fun and engaging story. The pictures are colourful and detailed with an interesting page layout. My son (3), loved trying to find Walter, who appears on each page. I would recommend this book for three years and over as the pages are quite detailed.

COUNTING DINOSAURS BY ROGER PRIDDY

Reviewer: Donna Grace My daughter (3) absolutely loved this book and insisted on going to bed cuddling it! She is very fond of dinosaurs which helped gain her interest from the start. She joined in the activities on each page, even making up her own questions for daddy and I. She even made up her own stories for the different animals and dinosaurs on each page saying “Arghhh sharky is going to eat the dinosaur’s tail!” It’s less of a story book and more of a search and find book.

Reviewer: Mat Dumont “Say Please, Louise” is a picture book about a girl with monstrous manners. If you’ve got a little one who struggles to say please, then this is the book for you! The main character, Louise, isn’t very polite until she meets a big monster who teaches her a lesson. It was unusual to read a bedtime story with such a blatant message, but my daughter (3) read along and by the end she was saying please along with Louise in the story. A book to save for those days when the kids are overly impolite!

MY FIRST JCB - JOEY AND FRIENDS AT WORK BY IGLOO BOOKS

Reviewer: Lorraine Holmes With a digger-loving son called Joey (3), we loved this book! It’s a nice story and shows you all the different types of diggers and how they all work together as a team to get the job done. Joey wanted to read this over and over again and soon learnt who was who. I would highly recommend it as it was a really enjoyable read.

BEWARE THE MIGHTY BITEY BY HEATHER PINDAR Reviewer: Kathryn Hunter Who couldn’t love a book where there’s a twist in the tale at the end? Just when you think you know what’s going to happen to the three animals who, one by one, think they’re sliding towards becoming lunch, it all changes! My daughter (4) thought this book was great. With clear and colourful illustrations, there was plenty to look at as we followed the story to the surprising end!
