y? Expanding Famil ts! Know Your Righ Having a baby is an exciting and daunting time for all new parents. Even those that already have children find that there are so many things that need attention and more often than not ‘the law’ is the last thing on anyone’s mind. However, as your family grows there are a number of legal implications which you should consider: -

Registering the Birth

A lot of parents do not realise that if they are unmarried when their child is born and the father is not named on the birth certificate, he does not have ‘Parental Responsibility’. This is a legal right to make important decisions about your child’s life and is often overlooked. Although you can rectify this at a later date with an agreement or Court Order, it can be a stressful and costly process.

You Need More Space

Every parent knows that babies have a lot of things, and that only increases as they grow bigger. New and expanding families usually find themselves having to move to a bigger property. Buying or selling a house is one of the biggest financial decisions you’ll ever make and even if you are renting it is important that you get the right legal advice to help make the whole process much smoother and stress free.

Living Together

In addition to this, many people are unaware that there is no such thing as a “common law marriage”. Couples that live together should consider entering into a ‘cohabitation

agreement’. This is a record of what you and your partner have agreed about how you will own and share your assets. It can help you to think about fair ways to organise your day-to-day finances. All couples who live together would benefit from having one and it should be looked at as a loving thing to do as it protects both of you and your children from unpleasantness and unfairness in the future. Similarly if you plan on getting married and you have assets from before you were together or a previous marriage it is always worth considering a “pre-nuptial agreement”. Although this is often considered unromantic, it is a sensible way to provide for the future.

Making a Will

It is important that everyone has a Will as without one your loved ones could lose control of what happens to your estate if something were to happen in the future. You can also use it to appoint a guardian for your children in case something happened to you or your partner. It is advisable that you use a solicitor or have a solicitor check your Will. It is very easy for other Will-writers to make mistakes which could cause issues in the future. A solicitor will also store your Will safely.

If you google ‘sugar NHS’, the first result you see is from www.nhs.uk. It says “Most adults and children in the UK eat too much sugar”. Sugar is all around us – and the fact that we eat too much is common knowledge. But changing our habits is hard – with young children, it can seem impossible. David Gillespie is the father to 6 children and after giving up sugar and seeing the dramatic benefits first hand, he is on something of a crusade to educate the world about the dangers of sugar. We invited him to explain why he gave it up and share his tips on how we could too. Sugar makes kids (and the rest of us) fat. What we call table sugar is half glucose and half fructose. The fructose half is converted directly to fat by the liver and it destroys our appetite control so that we want to eat more of everything. The more sugar our kids eat, the fatter they will be. But that will be the least of their worries if they eat sugar. Being fat won’t kill them but the diseases that being fat is a symptom of, will. High quality studies are starting to confirm that sugar consumption leads straight down a path to fatty liver disease then insulin resistance, PCOS, Type II Diabetes, Kidney Disease and on to depression, anxiety and ultimately Alzeheimer’s disease. Yes, sugar will make kids fatter today and give them rotten teeth but in 50 or 60 years’ time it will kill them.

Getting Kids Hooked. Sugary-food manufacturers know that time-poor parents want to be able to feed their children a quick, nutritious meal or snack. They also know that the sweeter they make the meal or snack, the more likely the child will want to eat it. The end result is foods with misleading nutrition messages on the outside (packaging) and sugar on the inside (e.g. products labelled as “low fat” may have high sugar content). Kids should be eating the same things you are (and not eating the same things you avoid), but don’t expect your child to give an award to anyone who removes sugar from their lives.

Useful Tips For Helping Children Avoid Sugar. All of these must be accompanied by a clear explanation as to why you are prohibiting sugar, set out in terms that your children will understand and which clearly affect them. Information has been proven to make a big difference when it comes to children and sugar.

Juice Is Not an Appropriate Drink For Toddlers (or anyone else). You wouldn’t put Coke in a sipper cup (you wouldn’t, right?). So don’t put juice in there either. Fruit juice is sugar which has been extracted from fruit. Our body doesn’t distinguish between the sugar in juice and the sugar from cane. It’s all just glucose+fructose. And since fructose (the dangerous part) is present in equal or higher quantities in juice as it is in soft drinks, it must be avoided. Choose water or milk instead.

Ensure The House is Sugar-Free. This must be absolute. If you have any cracks in the sugar-free wall at home, kids (like sheep looking for a break in the fence) will exploit that weakness and soon you will be back where you started. If you are firm (and unwavering) about this, kids will accept the new reality a lot quicker than you think.

Don’t Ban Stuff. Banning anything only seems to make it more attractive! Instead, know what your school menu

NHS Advice The NHS advises that sugars occur naturally in foods such as fruit and milk, but we don’t need to cut down on these types of sugars. Added sugars are found in foods such as sweets, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, and some fizzy drinks and juice drinks – these are the sugary foods we should cut down on. Sugars added to food shouldn’t make up more than 10% of the energy (calories) you get from food and drink each day.

Nutrition labels often tell you how much sugar a food contains. Look for the “Carbohydrates (of which sugars)” figure in the nutrition label.

offers and help your children choose carefully. They will occasionally choose the wrong thing but that’s not the end of the world. Most kids will try hard to obey your rules and when they don’t, they’ll feel guilty about it and probably won’t make a habit of it.

Don’t Be Afraid of the New. When your child comes home with a tale of woe that their friend had [insert name of new treat] in her lunchbox, don’t automatically say no. Check it out. It might be sugar-free or very low in sugar. You’d be surprised. And if it isn’t sugar-free, explain that that’s the reason you’re saying no; you’ll be surprised how accepting children can be.

Find Another Way to Reward Children. Food rewards are easy and mindless, but should be restricted to circus animals. Your kids deserve better. If they have balanced a ball on their nose for an hour, reward them with a trip to the movies rather than an ice-cream. Food is fuel, not a reward.

Prepare Them For Parties. If you know they are going into an environment where sugar consumption will be mandatory, talk to them about why it’s not a good idea to have too much. Ask them to have just one fizzy drink or juice then switch to water or diet soft drinks if they’re available. Ask them to veer towards the crisps and away from the sweets. Maybe they’ll have more than one drink, but if they do, they’ll have your words ringing in their ears. Don’t prohibit them from bringing home a party bag, but do ration the consumption of the bag’s contents.

Don’t Make a Teenager Stick Out. Teenage kids would rather throw themselves in front of a bus than not do what everyone else is doing. Give them some secret rules that they can follow without looking like a weirdo, such as choosing cool, youth-oriented diet versions like Coke Zero and Pepsi Max. When they’re heading for a sleepover (aka sugarthon), pack a bottle of diet soft drink and a bag of crisps as gifts for the host; that way your child will at least have a choice. (It also teaches them that it’s nice to contribute something).

Don’t Expect Too Much. You can’t expect children to never taste sugar. They will go to parties and they will have treats. And, being children, they will chow down with the rest of their mates. If you’ve had them on a no-sugar (or low-sugar) diet, they won’t be used to the fructose and may well find much of the food too sweet, but they’ll still probably eat it. Don’t panic.

The Golden Rule: Party food is for parties This rule seems to work well with kids. Sure, they love party food, but it’s an extra-special treat for them because they don’t get it every other day of the week. I’m no professional child wrangler, but it seems to me that you’ve got to give kids a little room to adjust. Don’t expect them to elect you parent of the month if you start cutting sugar from their diet, but remember that eventually they do adjust to the reality that sugar is no longer part of your (or their) lives. And the older they get, the more they will appreciate why – and thank you for it.

Children learn so much from growing their own plants and vegetables – and they love it too! A great activity regardless of the size of your garden, our friends at Akeley Wood School and Nursery share with us how they get their children developing their green fingers… and how you can, too. Within the nursery gardens at Akeley Wood Junior School, we have a designated area for the children to plant herbs and vegetables. Utilising our new growing boxes, this year we have planted strawberries, potatoes, raspberries, blackcurrants, lettuce and carrots. All are relatively easy for you to grow at home, depending on the space you have available – and the children delight in nurturing their seeds and watching their crops grow.

Top Tip #1

Get some appropriately sized tools for your children so they really feel involved. Each of our four Nursery classes (12 months to 4 years) take turns to water the plants daily. The children walk out into the garden, watering cans in hand, excited by the prospect that they are responsible for making the plants grow.

EYFS Learning Objectives “Shows care and concern for living things and the environment”. “Developing an understanding of growth, decay and changes over time”. “Can talk about some of the things they have observed such as plants, animals, natural and found objects”.

Often children will jump at the chance to get involved in growing something, but keeping them engaged whilst they wait to see the fruits of their labour can be trickier. Giving them a purpose for the end result helps with this! Here are some of the things we have done that you could copy: This year, our nursery children’s gift to their father on Father’s Day was a sunflower. They patiently watched and watered them daily, and now they are enjoying the final growing stages together at home. In early spring we planted our potatoes - these are one of our favourite things to grow as they’re easy to maintain and are always one of our most successful crops. Every year when our potatoes are harvested, we cook them to have with our tea. Potatoes can also be grown during all seasons. Place them in sacks, vegetable boxes or old bins/recycling boxes.

A Day in the Life of…

… a Maternity Nurse Diane Pawsey is a Maternity Nurse. It’s a full on job – literally 24 hours a day. But what is it she actually does? Diane takes us through a typical day supporting a family with their newborn baby. Some parents feel a little anxious about bringing their newborn home, especially if it’s their first. One of the services I offer is a Welcome Home Package, supporting and guiding parents through the first few days after their baby arrives. My current role is with a family in Grange Park, Northampton. I am staying with Mandy & Iain for 3 days then going back to do 3 nights a week for 6 weeks. Yesterday I received a call to tell me Mandy had given birth to a healthy baby girl at 8.35am weighing 7lbs 5oz.

1PM I go to meet Mandy, Iain and baby Isabel

8.40PM Isabel wakes - she’s very happy. Mum wants to give her a little wash and change her for bed. I show her how to top and tail baby and how to clean near her eyes. At 9pm Mandy starts feeding - Isabel is very sleepy so I share some tips how to keep her awake. 9.50PM I take Isabel and settle her to sleep in her moses basket in my room. I switch on some white noise to help. Lights out at 10.10pm

10.55PM Isabel wakes and is wriggling around a bit. I gently rub her tummy and she soon settles back down. 12.05AM Isabel is awake and ready for her feed. I take her to Mandy. After 45 minutes Mandy settles back down to sleep and I take Isabel into my room and wind her. She falls asleep very quickly.

at the maternity ward. Isabel has been feeding well - Mandy is breastfeeding. Isabel is very content and is fast asleep on dad’s chest - such a lovely picture! We spend some time talking about the birth and some concerns they have.

1.40AM Isabel starts crying. She is showing signs of wind, drawing up her legs. I pick her up and wind her in different positions until she gives me a couple of big burps. I place her back into her basket and she falls asleep.

4PM We head home! Iain and I bring the moses

3.50AM Isabel is showing signs of hunger by putting her fist in her mouth and licking her lips. I take her straight to Mum to feed. Mum is hungry too so I make her some toast and make sure she has plenty of water to hand. Mandy hands Isabel to me 50 minutes later and we’re back to sleep by 5am.

6PM Isabel wakes. I change her nappy and hand her to Mandy. Isabel has been favouring one side to feed on so I teach her a feeding position that will help Isabel feed happily on both sides. Within 10 minutes Isabel is latched on nicely, feeding well. We talk about Isabel’s routine and if mum wants to follow one - this is the parents’ decision. I advise on how to establish sleep associations and explain sleep cycles.

6.45AM I wake up and Isabel is fast asleep. I take the time to re-write my notes that I jotted down during the night. Mandy comes in and we talk about the night. Mandy can’t resist and picks up Isabel for a snuggle, and who can blame her? She’s absolutely adorable.

Come along to GymBugs, and along with our qualified pre-school coaches, you can assist your child to explore wonderful and exciting equipment such as ladders, beams and climbing apparatus whilst beginning to learn the basic skills of gymnastics. For the older children, there are more structured classes where they are taken around the apparatus by the coaches in small groups and slightly more difficult gymnastics skills are practiced. There will also be a chance in this lesson to partake in the British Gymnastics award schemes.
