The Show is the biggest and best parenting event in the county, with over 80 fantastic stands all under one roof, celebrating everything pregnancy to preschool. There will be great shopping, parenting experts, a fantastic demonstration programme, activities, refreshments and fun-filled family entertainment. Playing outside with bubbles is an all time favourite. Cut the bottom off a plastic drink bottle, pull a sock over the bottom of the bottle, then dip the sock into a bowl of bubble mixture (washing up liquid & water). Blow through the top of the bottle and have lots of fun making bubble snakes!

Coloured Water Play

Nature Paint brushes

This water activity is easy and great fun – perfect for 1 – 5 years. 1. Fill two tubs with water and add food colouring to each. One with blue and one with yellow. 2 Set out a third, empty tub. Your little one will scoop and pour the coloured water into this tub. 3. Set out scoops to transfer the water, e.g. ice cream scoops, measuring spoons, serving spoons. 4. Let your child play! They will love scooping back and forth and seeing the colour change to green, yellow and blue. For older children, add a red tub and extra empty tubs to give them the chance to make more colours.

Make simple paint brushes from nature and see what painty patterns you can create. 1. Go on a nature walk and collect ts of interesting pieces of nature – lots ves, bark, grasses, sheep’s wool etc. leaves, 2. Attach a piece of nature to a stick using an elastic band or a piece of string. 3. Layy out some paper and get some pots of paint. Try ry dabbing the brushes on the paper or sweeping them across it. A CHILD PORTRAIT EXPERIENCE

with Andy Nickerson Photography We all have cameras in our pockets these days and, as a result, we have a ridiculous amount of photos of our children. Do we really need a professional photographer to take more? My recent experience with Andy Nickerson Photography showed me that the answer to this question is an emphatic YES! Let me explain why.

The shoot was in Andy’s permanent, bespoke studio at his home in Brixworth, making it both homely and professional all at once. During the session, Andy took the photos and his wife Debbie supported him whilst entertaining and involving the children (and us!). They were both wonderfully relaxed, friendly and easy-going - the children immediately warmed to them, and there was lots of laughter throughout making it a memorable experience in its own right.

When it comes to the photos, Andy and Debbie pride themselves on being able to tease out a child’s natural personality and real expressions, and with good reason. Our children have VERY well practised photo smiles. I can’t stop them using those fake grins when I photograph them myself and yet Andy’s easy manner and quick trigger finger enabled him to capture the most natural shots of our children that I’ve ever seen. Andy’s style is simple, natural, beautiful and striking, and he has captured and created the most wonderful images of our children. I absolutely love them and I know we will enjoy and treasure them for years to come. But these are more than just nice photos. Andy is an artist, in the truest sense of the word. I can take photos, sure, but he creates works of art that make you go WOW. And that’s the difference.

More and more couples all over the world are now having difficulties getting pregnant. Although most don’t like to talk about it, we know that this amounts to 1 in 6 couples here in the UK. By Barbara Scott, author of 'Reflexology for Fertility' and practisin

It makes sense that to preserve our fertility we need to take good care of ourselves and make sure that our health and well-being are at their optimum.

There are many factors that affect fertility and these can range from identifiable and measurable conditions that affect the reproductive systems of both men and women to the more nebulous and less easy to measure effects of diet, nutrition, lifestyle factors and the environment. One of the most important factors affecting fertility is age. Many women aren’t beginning to think about starting a family until they are in their early thirties, and given that female fertility begins to decline more rapidly around the age of 35, it can come as a bit of a shock that having a family might not be as easy as they thought. Professor Adam Balen, chair of The British Fertility Society hosted The Fertility Health Summit at The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists earlier in 2016. The key topic was how to inform young people that their fertility has a ‘sell by’ date, and that it is finite. Some interesting facts came out of the summit. • 52% of all births are now from women over 30 • 67% of all births are now from men over 30 • The average age of first time mums has risen from 24 in 1971 to 28.5 in 2014. Women are born with every egg that they will ever have and it is inevitable that these eggs will deteriorate with age. The rate that male fertility declines also increases from around the age of 40, although we know that it starts to fall prior to this. Although men are continually producing sperm, production slows down as we age and the sperm also tend to be less healthy.

Many couples believe that if they cannot conceive naturally then IVF will be the answer. Sadly many don’t realise that the success rates of IVF are still low, at around 25% per cycle. Additionally, undergoing IVF can be extremely demanding on many different levels - physiologically, emotionally, mentally, practically and, of course, financially. NHS funding is poor for IVF and self-funding can cost between £5,000 – £15,000 per cycle of IVF. It is estimated that an average of three cycles are needed for each successful outcome. Increasing numbers of couples are now turning to complementary medicine and therapies to help them when they face difficulties in trying to conceive. Complementary therapies aim to support the more traditional approaches to medicine, and can be a useful adjunct, particularly for fertility issues. They tend to look at issues on an holistic basis, which means addressing not just the physical issues, but emotional and mental issues too. Reflexology is one such treatment that is gaining in popularity for both men and women. In a recent survey published by the Federation of Holistic Therapists, for 51% of those questioned who offered complementary therapies, reflexology was the main form of treatment used. Reflexology is a form of complementary therapy that has been in existence for many thousands of years, originating in ancient Egypt, but also used in India and China. There are apparently hieroglyphs in Egypt that depict this form of treatment being undertaken for the healing of ailments.

As with most forms of complementary therapy, reflexology is rarely available under NHS treatment. However, we are seeing more and more fertility clinics making it available as a form of treatment to support assisted conception. Although data and research are limited for complementary therapies, there are now some good pieces of research being undertaken that are showing how effective it is. ReproflexologyTM (Reproductive Reflexology) is a specialist form of integrative medicine that uses medical testing to measure efficacy and outcomes of treatment, alongside the most longed-for result of having a baby. It aims to help couples achieve conception naturally, but if this is not possible due to the complexity of their reproductive health issues, then it is used to support all forms of assisted conception. It is preferable that both parties attend an initial consultation, which helps the practitioner to assess their individual circumstances and plan their treatment. Treatment plans look at addressing any underlying causal factors that might be affecting fertility for both men and women. We also look at diet, nutrition and lifestyle as these can all be influencing factors. For women, this means ensuring that each stage of their menstrual cycle is functioning as effectively as possible. When working with men we use semen analysis to assess and measure progress and effectiveness of treatment, and aim to treat any underlying conditions that may be affecting sperm volume (numbers), motility (ability to swim) and morphology (formation).

In 2011, we formed the Association of Reproductive Reflexologists and one of the things this allowed us to do was to carry out a small data collection study of 180 cases. We found that 68% of couples conceived when using ReproflexologyTM as part of their fertility journey, typically alongside IVF. This compares with success rates of only 30% for those undertaking IVF alone. Even though this is a relatively small sample, the results of our study support our firm belief that ReproflexologyTM is an effective form of fertility treatment.

Success stories from some reflexology practitioners include: • A couple trying to conceive for 4½ years conceived after three treatments. • A couple trying to conceive for 6 years, with three failed attempts at IVF, conceived after fourteen treatments and now have a baby girl. • A couple trying for 4 years had two miscarriages, four failed IVF treatments and testing done all over the world offering no conclusion. After 3 reflexology treatments they were pregnant. • Two clients both with repeated miscarriages fell pregnant after 3 months of treatment which both resulted in live births. • After trying to conceive for several years, a client was told that she had a 1% chance of conceiving naturally due to egg quality. She fell pregnant after approximately 8 reflexology treatments. If you choose to use this as a form of treatment to support your fertility, it is important to find someone who is appropriately trained. It works in a similar way to acupuncture, in that it is based on improving the flow of energy through ‘meridians’, which are a set of pathways in the body along which vital energy is said to flow. Small ‘blockages’ can obstruct this flow of energy and it is here that physical, mental or emotional symptoms begin to present themselves. By working on these specific reflex points in the feet, reflexology aims to improve the flow of energy and therefore the presenting condition.

So how effective is ReproflexologyTM as a form of treatment? There is much anecdotal evidence that supports its use but we want to offer more than that.

So what can you do as a parent to build resilience in your child?

• Stay positive. Children learn from the adults around them, so if you demonstrate positivity and rise to the challenge, so will they! Be the mum or dad that admits that sometimes things are hard but everything will be OK. Help them learn to appreciate the simple things in life such as going for a walk, spending time as a family and playing with their friends.

One of the most important things you can do is help your child to develop secure bonds with adults, providing them with positive role models in their life. You should also provide opportunities for your children to regularly learn new skills and, more importantly, take risks!

These types of experiences rely on outer support from family and other adults in your child’s life, but it’s important to remember that every child also needs to develop their inner strengths to enable them to become fully resilient. The inner strengths include:

We are all born with a capacity for resilience, but research shows that if we really want to become happy, healthy and successful human beings, resilience is something we need to instil in our children early on.

Try to remember to… • Listen with interest. I know it’s not always easy, but take 5, put the housework on hold and listen to your children’s thoughts and ideas without any distractions. Let them know that what they have to say to you is important. • Show empathy. You don’t have to agree with their argument about why they don’t want to eat the vegetables on their plate, but modelling empathy as they are growing up makes it easier for them to try and understand others. • Let go of being perfect. This isn’t always easy, particularly if you are a perfectionist at heart! However, teaching your child that everyone makes mistakes and that failure is a natural part of learning is an important life skill.

The problems that affect children’s emotional well-being are many and varied. Over 60 have been identified with autistic spectrum and ADHD at the top of the list. Sometimes it is not obvious - a child may become shy because of lack of self-esteem or quiet and withdrawn because of traumatic experiences. You are not alone as a parent if your child has one of these issues. 10% of UK children have a mental health problem and another 10% are estimated to have an emotional or behaviour problem that prevents them reaching their full potential.

The Good News

The brain has plasticity – the ability to change for the better, for example through therapy. However the brain is most plastic in our early years, so it’s important that psychological issues are dealt with as they emerge – from the age of four onwards.

Be Selective

There’ss a wide range of therapies available. The most well-known is counselling, which is mainly a talking therapy which is most suitable for adults and teenagers. Younger children often cannot or do not want to talk about their problems so therapies that use play and the creative arts are more suitable for them. It’s essential to choose a therapist who receives regular clinical supervision and is on a register accredited by the Professional Standards Authority or registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). It’s also best to choose a therapy that has an adequate evidence base of clinical outcomes rather than just a knowledge base. The Register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists, managed by Play Therapy UK, is the only one that meets all these criteria at present. Come along to GymBugs, and along with our qualified pre-school coaches, you can assist your child to explore wonderful and exciting equipment such as ladders, beams and climbing apparatus whilst beginning to learn the basic skills of gymnastics. For the older children, there are more structured classes where they are taken around the apparatus by the coaches in small groups and slightly more difficult gymnastics skills are practiced. There will also be a chance in this lesson to partake in the British Gymnastics award schemes.
