Back in March, we were faced with a gut-wrenching decision. The lockdown had not yet been announced, and no one knew what was going to happen. We were due to go to print with our spring magazine in two days’ time and we didn’t know what to do... should we carry on or pull the issue? With hindsight, the answer was obvious - and I’m happy we made the right call. Had we gone to print, the magazine would’ve been out of date before it came off the press, and we wouldn’t have been helping anyone. Instead, the Toddle About magazine went into an enforced hibernation. But we didn’t. We carried on working and focussed instead on how we could help parents digitally, and we hope you enjoy the improvements we have made to the Toddle About website!

Discipline It’s probably safe to say that we all want our children to be kind, show respect and share nicely. And it’s down to us - we are our child’s first teacher - but how can we teach them how to behave in this way? I think as a parent, one of our greatest fears is that we’ll screw this up.

There is a lot of conflicting advice there about this, so we asked Norland nanny Louenna Hood to share her top tips for 3-5 year old children:

Let Them be Silly and Loud Sometimes. I try to let the children be as free as possible to use up all the energy they have so they don’t start climbing the walls. Fresh air has a big positive impact on children’s behaviour, so try and let them run and shout and be silly when they can so when behaviour does matter, you can ask them to stop jumping around without feeling guilty.

Just say No. Don’t be scared of parenting, or of saying no for fear of hurting your child’s feelings or ruining your friendship bond. By giving children everything they want, we make them miserable, greedy and unlikeable.

Don’t Scare Them.

Have Rules and Stick to Them.

We want their individual personalities to shine through so they develop into the characters they are. Your children should never be scared of you or wonder what your reaction will be.

My rules are that we eat well, sleep well, have good manners and be kind to others.

Be Firm and Fair but Don’t Negotiate.

Stop Problems Before They Happen.

We don’t want to constantly say no. If your child knows what your rules are, they won’t even need to ask. Be firm and fair and make sure you’re always reasonable. No should mean no, not maybe. Don’t let the situation go on and don’t negotiate.

Consider your child’s situation: if they are overtired they’ll be irritable, and if they are hungry they will probably act up. Try and put yourself in your child’s shoes and always think ahead so these situations don’t arise.

Be Consistent. Children must know your reaction will be the same every time in that situation. For example, if a parent laughs at a behaviour one day, then tells the child off the next for the same thing the next day, this can be very confusing for them.

When They Hit You.

Always Give a Reason. Explain to your child why they can’t have / do something so they know you are being reasonable – there should always be a reason. Having graduated from the prestigious Norland College over 15 years ago, Louenna Hood has worked with a number of high-profile families and helped to enrich the lives of the many young children she has worked with.

If you are holding your child when they hit you, put them down on the floor and tell them in a stern manner that you are very upset and they must never hit anyone. Ask them to apologise and don’t pick them up until the moment is completely over.

Choosing The Right School For Your Child: TOP TIPS Your child’s first educational experiences can set the tone for their future academic career and happiness. Finding a school that provides a nurturing environment and allows your child to reach their full potential can seem like a difficult task, but it needn’t be if you know the right questions to ask and what to look for. It’s important to consider a range of factors when choosing a school for your child, in order to find a setting that will support their unique personality and individual needs. Firstly, consider your child’s interests. What do they love to do? If they long to be outside every second of the day for example, look for a school that places value on outdoor learning; perhaps through a fantastic Forest School facility, innovative outdoor play equipment or a wide variety of timetabled sports. If your child loves creative play, enquire as to how the school weave creativity into their curriculum. This could be through messy play, music or the performing arts for instance. While many schools are unable to facilitate open days at present, it is important to find out as much as you can about the setting, whether that be through a private tour, via virtual content or perhaps during a video appointment with the headteacher. Contact the schools that you are interested in and ask them to send you as many details as possible to get a feel for their ethos.

During these initial enquiries, it is worth jotting down a list of questions to ask the school in order to cover all of the points that are important to you specifically. If your child has special educational needs for example, find out about the school’s SEN and Learning Support provision. You may want more details on specific areas of the curriculum, any home learning expectations and how the school support children who may need an extra helping hand in certain areas. If you are worried about your child settling in, you may wish to enquire as to how the Early Years team help children who are particularly anxious and what provision they have in place to aid a smooth and calm transition. The most important thing is to gain a real feel for a school’s ethos, as well as their facilities and educational provision. Ask questions, get as much information from the school as possible and really consider what is important to your child and their growing interests.

Chocolate Frosting & DEcoration: » 55g Softened butter » 90g Milk or Dark cooking chocolate » 215g Icing sugar » 2 Drops of Vanilla Extract/Essence » 88ml Milk » 2 packs of Fruit Bowl Peelers » 1 bag Fruit Bowl Yogurt coated raisins, halved widthways » 1 bag Fruit Bowl Fruit Flakes cut into pieces

CUPCAKES: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/ Gas Mark 4. 2. Sieve the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder and mix together. 3. In a separate bowl, beat together the butter, sugar, red food colouring, eggs and milk. Mix well. 4. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the wet mixture. Mix well. 5. Pour the mixture into cupcake cases. Bake in the oven for 20 mins until the cakes are soft and springy to touch. Place on a wire rack to cool. FROSTING: 1. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan of boiling water or in a microwave. 2. In a bowl, combine the icing sugar, vanilla and 60ml of the milk. 3. Add the melted chocolate mixture and the remaining milk a little at a time until the desired consistency is achieved. Let the icing stand until spreadable (the frosting will thicken as it cools). 4. Once the cupcakes are cooled, pipe or spread the frosting onto the cupcakes. DECORATION: 1. To make the body, take 1 strand from a Peeler and roll into a spiral. Secure with a blob of icing and place on the cupcake. 2. To make the legs, cut Peeler pieces into 5cm strips (8 in total), position them on the cake coming out of the spider body. 3. Add 2 Yogurt halves and 2 fruit flakes for the eyes.

IN 60 SECONDS

One of the reasons I wrote Meee in a Family Minute was to help families, including my own, to stay connected regardless of the inevitable ups and downs of family life. We can’t postpone the relationship building and fun for the annual holiday, hoping that two weeks in the sun will miraculously solve any outstanding issues. Sometimes we need new ideas or new ways of thinking and relating to each other – right now. And that is true during a pandemic or not.

Majestic in the Domestic

There are chores to do, washing to complete, a laundry basket bursting with ironing opportunities and the endless question of ‘What will we have for dinner?’ Find the majestic in the domestic. Create a playlist for your household routines and crank up the volume – being mindful of your neighbours of course. Make it a family affair and everyone does their chores to the same music, punctuated by some dancing around the living room or karaoke style sing-along. Make the boring fun and get it done. Take a minute to come up with a family chore playlist, each family member chooses two or three songs they love, compile the list and turn it into a sort of musical chairs for chores. Whoever gets their song first, (might be best to use the ‘shuffle’ option) starts to do their task first and so on. Once everyone has started, it will take no time to get everything done.

Foster Resilience

Bad things happen to good people all the time. We are living through very unusual times and it offers us a great opportunity to teach resilience to our children. We need to allow our children enough space to solve their own problems. As parents, we should be supportive and listen to how our children would fix the problem, asking questions so as to help them arrive at a constructive solution. Take a minute to think about the last time your children faced a problem. Did you rush in to fix it, or did you support them and encourage them to solve the problem themselves? We may want to take away the distress, but if we do, we rob them of the opportunity to solve their own challenges and build much-needed resilience. Family is messy but in just one minute it is possible to deepen our connection to each other and get back on track.

Getting School Ready As we begin to settle back into a new form of normal, parents of pre-schoolers around the country will be starting to turn their thoughts to the next big step. Starting school. There will be a sense of excitement and perhaps a few nerves as one era ends and a new chapter begins. As a pre-school parent you can really help your child to feel ‘school ready’ over the coming year with some simple and effective day to day prompts. Your positive words and encouragement will make a big difference - with a little support your child will soon feel confident and ready to get off to a flying start in Reception.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY Talking to your child with enthusiasm about starting school and explaining what will happen will help them to feel settled with the changes. Closer to when they will be starting school, show them where they will be going, who will take them, and explain in more detail what to expect. Teach them the name of their teacher and who to talk to if they need any help. This will help them to feel secure in their new environment.

TEACH THE BASICS NOW There are some great basic life skills that parents can focus on this year too. As a good starting point, you can help your child learn how to go to the toilet unaided and wash their hands. How to eat with a fork and knife is a good skill as well, and always encourage them to try a variety of foods. Learning how to get dressed and put shoes on is helpful, but do not panic if they find it a little tricky. Things do take time and practice. When you have it available, help your child to try on their uniform. Check they can undo their buttons or clasps and familiarise them with what they are wearing and what their coat, shoes and water bottle look like. This will help them to feel more confident on that first day.

START WITH THEIR NAME Start to introduce your child to basic letters and numbers during normal daily life. Phonics can be truly fun and the best first step at home is to start with helping your child to recognise their name. Writing your child’s name on their artistic creations and their belongings will help them to identify what is theirs. This is a skill which will help them at school when it comes to finding things like their coat peg and their water bottle too. When you are out and about, see if you can spot letters from your child’s name together, making sure you use the phonetic sounds. To practice writing some letters, try giving your child a tray of salt, rice or shaving foam. Copying letters in this way is great fun (and a bit messy!)

AS EASY AS 1 – 2 – 3 Counting will come naturally to many children. Counting out a few treats, counting the steps to the slide, counting how long it takes to do five star jumps. Counting really is a part of our everyday lives. If you want to bridge to the next step, a good starting point is to recognise ‘more’ or ‘less’ than, such as who has more marbles. Starting school is an exciting time for all. With some simple preparations your child will flourish in their new class; remember to always enjoy this exciting adventure together.

The Emotional

UPS and DOWNS of Toddlers

The toddler years are trying and tender - they come with unmatched joys and challenges. Often referred to as the ‘Terrible Twos’, tantrums can become commonplace, Places now for Reception 2021 intake. and learning how to handle them is something of available a rite of passage for new parents. Please contact our school offices to book a visit. Empathy and recognition go a long way - everyone wants to be understood, even when desires cannot be indulged. Labeling their desires helps them manage limits. This is how we begin to help children handle disappointment (a part of life forever!) Instead of saying, “How many times have I told you no cookies before dinner?” Try empathy: “I know how much you love cookies. I am going to put them on the counter for after,” or, “You really wanted to play more at the playground. I wish we could stay longer. You can be mad about leaving!” Toddlers live in the moment - their desire right now is the only one they know. A key parent role is to recognise the moment matters in a big way to them. Help them feel understood by stating their desire and eventually they will be able to move on.

This developmental stage is foundational to who your child will become. Understanding what underlies the tumult of this period can make life easier for you and allow you to focus more on the joys and pleasures of raising your little one. The newness of your toddler’s brain drives the upheavals of this time - it will take another 20 years or more to reach full brain development. Toddlers are figuring out how to be separate from their parents and are gaining a sense of self, but they also don’t want to be alone in the world. The fierce pushpull of needing to know mummy or daddy is close, coupled with powerful desires to explore on their own, spurs on meltdowns. “I want to do it myself” conflicts with “I need you!” The new emotions that arise, including anger and frustration, coupled with the brain’s lagging capabilities to control them, complicate this process. Toddlers become increasingly emotion-flooded. They are not being bad. Your child is overwhelmed and in need of support.

Seeing your toddler as new to the world, and remembering that they are figuring out life with experimentation and exploration, will allow you to take a step back. Give them room to be on their own, with you close by. Watch them explore. Wonder together about what they see, hear and discover. Allow them to try for themselves - and yes, to stumble. Comfort as needed, but let them do it. And go light on yourself – there is no such thing as a perfect parent, nor should you strive for that. Instead, keep your humour, stay light in response to tough situations, and enjoy these truly magical years.

Tantrums need not be avoided. They are learning moments that happen when a child is flooded and lacking the language needed to communicate or handle the hard feelings. Meltdown! Do all you can to not take it personally. Toddlers need responsible adults to stay calm when they are upset. They feel your emotions and loving presence.
