Since the Cart was delivered, my little girl (2 years old) has played with it every day. She has spent a lot of time making ice creams for all the family, even the dog! It comes with 4 different flavoured ice creams: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and mint and 3 different toppings: orange sprinkles, whipped cream and cherry. The magic scoop allows you to pick up the ice cream and place them on the cone. There is even a bell on the side of the cart to press when the order is ready. It comes with double-sided activity cards which are slotted into the till. These contain orders to make which help with learning colours, flavours and counting. I like

the fact that it’s educational and also encourages creativity. It’s great that the cart can be wheeled around easily - it’s been pushed all around the house and even out in the garden. All the while my daughter is copying the phrase, ‘Ice cream, ice cream, who wants ice cream?’ This product has kept my daughter and my niece entertained for ages. They have enjoyed taking it in turns to play the customer and the server. It’s a lovely product and I would highly recommend!

Times are changing but does this mean our children will forget how amazing the natural world can be?

In 2012, the Oxford University Press published a new Junior Dictionary. Making space for newlyemerging words – analogue, broadband, chatroom – publishers removed words ‘fallen into disuse’, including acorn, buttercup and conker. A furore followed; not because the technologyrelated words were not relevant but because many felt that losing the nature-orientated words would mean losing the link between the natural world and future generations. Many people believe that the link has been lost already, that the natural world has become a lost world to the young. The term ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ – coined by Richard Louv, in 2005 – has been widely used to describe the detrimental effects, on physical and mental health, of children’s disengagement from nature. The stats paint a concerning picture – with a third of under-16s being overweight and an ‘epidemic of mental illness’ afflicting the young. In response, many efforts ensue to re-engage children with the Great Outdoors. Amongst the initiatives, an illustrated book of poems, ‘The Lost Words,’ has taken the literary world by storm, scooping the Kate Greenaway Award and inspiring a campaign across Scotland to get a copy for every primary school. Schools are crucial to the success of this endeavour. By taking learning outdoors and using objects from nature to assist in a range of subjects, they can deliver on keeping the words and the worlds of nature alive in students.

Forest School is also a brilliant starting point. Much more than an outdoor education programme, it is a fully integrated, structured programme of activities, underpinned by research, risk assessment, combining bushcraft, skills-building, environmental awareness, character education and personal wellbeing. The natural world can also be embraced at home too. By teaching children that ‘dirt is not the enemy’ and that the most fun they can have is running around and being free to build a den, to care for animals, to examine the changing seasons around them. To just be.

HOW TO HIGHLIGHT NATURE AT HOME: You could engage with your child about what plants and trees they can see around them when they are at the park. See if you can identify a tree using the shape of the leaves and other ‘clues’ you can see. Conker season will soon be here, and the Horse Chestnut Tree is a good start. This tree can live for up to 300 years, the flowers produce nectar for bees, the leaves are food for caterpillars, deer can eat the conkers and of course children can collect conkers to create some fun games! Encourage your child to look higher and dig deeper. Lie on the floor to look up at the tall trees, peer through some binoculars to see the top. Encourage your child to rummage around the forest floor, do a bug hunt and see who lurks under the leaves. Most importantly just enjoy being outside, whatever the weather may be.

How to Spot Play Potential in Everyday Household Items How many times have you found your child playing happily with a seemingly uninteresting everyday household item? Perhaps they were creating beautiful music by banging a wooden spoon on a pan, making a mess splashing around in the sink with a few plastic pots, or building some elaborate den using a cardboard box. You don’t need a houseful of expensive toys to get the kids playing! Let’s take the kitchen for example – washing up bowls, pots and pans, spoons, measuring cups, tongs, mashers, muffin trays, ice cube trays, bowls, jugs and much more offer lots of opportunity for play. Just add rice, pasta, cereal, water, ice, paint, mud, or shaving foam for a bit of messy play (make sure to have some old towels on hand though!)

Don’t forget the great outdoors either: it holds so much potential for collecting natural resources which can be used in everyday play - sticks, pebbles, leaves, bark, pinecones, shells, conkers, even snow! Plus, of course, your child will be getting some vital fresh air at the same time. I am a big believer in reusing and repurposing items too. The recycling box is a fantastic place to find play resources, particularly for arts and crafts - egg boxes, cardboard boxes, yoghurt pots. Old bottles with a spray nozzle are great for water play or painting. Of course, there is absolutely no harm in buying toys for your child, but I recommend considering the ‘play value’ before you make the purchase. Can you think of lots of ways it can be used? Wooden toys are fantastic for lots of reasons, but plastic toys also have their place as they offer more versatility and can be used in water trays, messy play activities or the bath. A plastic tea set is one of my play cupboard essentials! So I challenge you to take a look at what you already have at home that you can use to create an activity for your little one, keeping them entertained and hopefully giving you five minutes peace to enjoy a cuppa! Happy playing!

Mindfulness has become mainstream in the last decade, and these exercises are great for everyone – whether you are pregnant or not. Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your attention to whatever is happening in the present moment. This can be your breath, the sensations in your body (experienced through your five senses), your everyday actions (such as brushing your teeth or going for a walk), or your emotions ... almost anything in fact. The key is to intentionally experience the present moment, with kindness, self-compassion and without judging yourself – just being in the moment as best you can. Over the past two decades, the practice of mindfulness has evolved from its Eastern meditation roots to a mainstream, secular and increasingly accessible way of supporting our mental health and emotional wellbeing. We now have strong, scientifically robust evidence that a regular mindfulness practice can take us from a place where we may feel overwhelmed, stressed or out of control to a calmer and more contented headspace. Everyone’s experience of pregnancy is different. Rather than simply “getting through” this time, with mindfulness mums-to-be can thrive and become fully present for all the inevitable ups and downs that it holds. Learning the art of mindfulness will give you a set of simple yet hugely powerful skills that can completely transform your emotional experience and sense of wellbeing. Follow us for daily updates!

Regular mindfulness practice can help us to become less reactive, feel less stressed and have a more balanced perspective on life’s challenges. It has been shown to decrease the production of the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, and promote the release of the feel-good hormone oxytocin, which means that by incorporating mindfulness techniques into your everyday life during the first trimester of your pregnancy, you will be establishing a calmer environment for your baby to grow in – letting him or her know that they are safe and protected.

Exercise 1 Mindful Breathing: It All Starts Here If you’ve never tried mindfulness before, the easiest way to start is by intentionally focusing on your breath. It’s a bit like squeezing the brakes on a bike – it slows you right down, allowing you to simply “be” in the moment, taking in the full remarkable experience of your current stage of pregnancy. Sit comfortably somewhere nice and quiet, and allow yourself to arrive in this moment right here and now. That’s it – you’ve started. Bring your attention to the breath ... As you breathe in, bring your attention fully to the in-breath, as you breathe out, bring your attention fully to the out-breath. Notice the pauses in between the breaths. Oct - Dec 2021

★ Notice five things that you can see. Bring your attention to five things around you that give a sense of the visual beauty of the world and that you would like your baby to see when it arrives. Perhaps the blueness of the sky, the petals of a flower, or a recent gift that you have been given.

Allow the breath to be as it is. There’s no need to change, direct or force it in any way. Just allow the breath to flow. Notice the sensation as the breath enters the body, then leaves it again, notice it in the abdomen, the chest, the nostrils. Focus, perhaps, on where the sensation is most vivid for you. When you notice that your attention has wandered away from the breath, be curious about what is pulling your attention, perhaps noticing any patterns that emerge. Then, gently and kindly, escort your attention back to the breath, allowing it to anchor you in this present moment. After a few minutes expand your awareness to take in the whole of your body and breath, and after a few moments expand your awareness once more to take in the space around your body. Sense your whole body resting and breathing in this broad, expanded awareness. Notice the sense of spaciousness that this may bring. As best you can, try to take a sense of this calm spaciousness with you into the rest of your day. If for any reason, or at any point in your practice, you find the breath difficult to engage with, try shifting the focus of your attention to your feet on the floor and notice the sense of stability and steadiness that arises from this connection.

Exercise 2 Tuning Into the Senses: Five Alive

This practice, designed for all of the senses to be used in one sitting, is a wonderful way to connect you to the present moment and an opportunity for you to give your baby information about the world. Placing awareness on the physical sensations of sight, touch, sound, smell and taste can be wonderfully grounding and stabilizing.

★ Notice four things that you can feel. Bring your attention to four things that you are currently feeling. Maybe a breeze on your face or the softness of a blanket in your hands. ★ Notice three things that you can hear. Bring your attention to three sounds that you can hear in the background. Perhaps the sound of rain, birdsong or a favourite piece of music. ★ Notice two things that you can smell. Bring your awareness to two scents in your vicinity. Maybe a bunch of fresh flowers, a pot of coffee, or, if you’re outside, the smell of cut grass. ★ Notice one thing that you can taste. Bring your awareness to something that you can taste right now, in this moment. Perhaps by taking a sip of a drink, eating something, or just noticing the current taste in your mouth.

Exercise 3 The Calm of the Out-Breath: Dancing Candle In the run-up to your due date, it can be helpful, particularly in moments of worry or overwhelm, to take a little time out for yourself. The simple candlelight practice below is a useful one to do during such moments. Light a candle and place it on a table in front of you. Watch the flame and take a couple of breaths in and out to centre yourself. Once you feel ready, gently exhale through your mouth toward the candle and notice the way your breath makes the flame dance. Blowing out through your mouth makes it easier for you to extend your exhalation, which will help you to relax and stay calm. Some mothers like to recall this image as their baby is being born – as a way to help them focus on the present moment and remain calm and in control.

Christmas Crispy Candy Cane Treats The holidays are the perfect time to bring the whole family together in the kitchen to make food that can be shared. This candy cane crispy treat recipe is quick, easy, fun and makes the perfect little food gift for last minute visitors!

Directions Ingredients

1. Line baking dish with parchment paper or lightly greased tin foil

• ¼ cup butter/margarine

2. Melt butter/margarine over low heat

• 1 bag (10 oz) of large

3. Mix in marshmallows and vanilla, stir with a

marshmallows or 4 cups of mini marshmallows

• 1 tsp. vanilla extract • ½ cup crush candy canes; 1 tbsp for garnish topping

4. Mix in crushed candy canes into melted marshmallow mixture

While the mix is still warm, you can shape the crispy mix into the candy cane shapes and decorate by wrapping in red licorice to create a candy stripe effect!
