IN THIS ISSUE

TO AUTUMN & CHRISTMAS 2019!

Bite Sized News

As I write this in September, Christmas seems miles away. But within a few short weeks of this magazine being released, it'll be November the shops will start displaying their Christmas stock and radio DJs will debate whether it's too early to play The Pogues or a bit of Mariah.

Birthday Shout Outs

It's a guilty pleasure, I suppose. I know they're corny and cliched, but I love the music, the decorations, the lights and, most of all, how the mood of the nation seems to lift as we get closer to the big day. I didn't always feel this way - Christmas was nice, sure. But I didn't get excited about it. Having a baby changed that overnight though. Suddenly, Christmas wasn't just about giving a few gifts and eating and drinking to excess. It was magical. Every Christmas Eve, we pull 'The Night Before Christmas' off the top shelf and read it as a family, looking forward to our own visit from Santa Claus. We have three children now, and we've read it every year since the eldest was born. I remember my mum reading the same story to me on Christmas Eve when I was little too. I guess it's a tradition. And we're creating other, new traditions every year - the annual ice skating trip tells us Christmas isn't far off (see p.34), and a visit to see Father Christmas himself is a must (see Where's Santa? on p.32). In truth, the build up to the big day is in many ways more fun than the day itself! I hope this edition of Toddle About will help you make the most of this time of year, regardless of your beliefs. You'll find plenty of ideas of things to do in this issue, in any case! And who knows? You might even start some new traditions of your own... Loving life with little ones,

Tim and Ruth

Playing at Home

No doubt there will be people complaining that Christmas starts earlier every year, and I sympathise with that feeling - I don't like how commercial Christmas has become, nor the cultural pressure to buy yet more stuff... but I still love this time of year.

T H E I M P O RTA N C E O F

After 15 years of working in Early Years and gaining my qualifications to become an Early Years Professional, I left my full time role as a Pre-School Manager to have my son, who is now two years old. From my time in Early Years, I knew it was important to work with parents and I always felt strongly that parents are their child’s very first educators. hile I was on maternity I began to understand the importance of play within the home environment and how it sets the foundations for later learning. Amazingly, by giving your child the opportunity to play at home, you’re also giving them the best start in life. As parents, we are our child’s first educators and their learning starts from birth. From the moment you begin to smile at your baby, talk to them during the day, go on a walk, sing songs, have cuddles and meet their physical and emotional needs, you are teaching your child. All these activities that go on during the newborn days are the start of your child’s learning journey. Understanding the role of play in learning is crucial for us to be good parents. It is through play – by engaging in new experiences and activities which interest them and meet their individual needs - that children build on their previous skills and knowledge and develop their learning further. During play, children use language/communication, mathematical knowledge, creativity, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical activity and problem solving. It is a powerful way for children to learn effectively at their own pace!

Experiences within the home do not need to be expensive - it can be as simple as a walk to the shops where you describe what you are doing and encourage them to take an active role by encouraging them to pay. Activities at home can include simple things such as puzzles, stories, singing and trips to the park. In everything we do as parents however, we need to lead by example. Naturally, young children will look up to and admire their parents and other close relatives. Currently my son loves running as I take part in our local Park Runs every Saturday. I began these because I wanted him to see exercise as a part of our regular routine that is enjoyable and fun. I believe that we should be the person we want our child to become. You will be surprised at how much your child watches and observes you at home!

90% of a child’s brain development happens by the age of five, which is why the early years are so vital and children need to be exposed to a variety of experiences. Different experiences will introduce new vocabulary and build on previous knowledge to take their learning forward. Katy Emms runs an Instagram page to encourage and inspire parents to play at home with their children in different and imaginative ways that support their child’s development. Visit @my_little_fidget to learn more about how to create and expose your child to experiences and activities that are simple and cheap to set up at home. 6 Oct-Dec 2019 Toddle About

ANNA n by KARMBEL EL

MONSTERS Snap, Crackle and Pop – these mini monsters from leading children’s cookery author Annabel Karmel will soon get gobbled up! Prep time: 30 minutes (excluding chill time) Cook time: 5 minutes Makes: 12 Rice Krispie monsters

Ingredients:

• 100g butter • 200g golden syrup • 100g white chocolate • 225g Rice Krispies

To Decorate:

• 100g white chocolate • Food colouring • White fondant icing • Chocolate chips

1. Line a 20cm square baking tin with baking paper. 2. Measure the butter and golden syrup into a saucepan and heat gently. When melted, remove from the heat and add the white chocolate. Stir until melted. 3. Add the Rice Krispies, stir well and spoon into the tin. Spread out and level the surface. Chill for 4 hours or until firm. Cut into 12 bars. 4. To decorate, melt the white chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering

water. Once melted, divide the chocolate into three small bowls. Colour each bowl with a little food colouring of your choice. 5. Dip the bars half way into the coloured chocolate and leave to set in the fridge. 6. Roll little balls of white fondant to make large eyes. Push a chocolate chip into the centre to make the eyeballs. 7. Stick on the eyes to make monster faces.

IS JUST THE BEGINNING‌ All parents can remember at least one (if not many) times their toddler has proudly made a very loud noise and smiled to their audience, ready for an appreciative reaction.

While not all impromptu music is always expected, it is wonderful that toddlers are already noticing the way that they can produce sounds, and can use these sounds to express themselves. This musical awareness could support a host of skills that can impact a child’s life as they grow, most noticeably when a child is actively involved in the making of music. Whilst your child is loudly banging that drum or singing their favourite song, something very special is also happening in their growing mind and body. Their concentration is being tested, their listening skills are improving and their mind is learning to recognise patterns. As they join together with friends to produce a band for mum and dad, their social skills are coming into play, they are experimenting with co-ordination and their confidence is growing. In learning, we can see the benefits of music too. Music and language have been found to have close links and those children who are exposed to music regularly and early in life can often see the advantages in their speaking, reading, listening and hearing skills. Rhythms and patterns in music can be replicated in mathematical learning too. All these benefits will impact children well into their school life and beyond. In a world where exciting colourful toys can sing and dance to your child on demand, and the television can instantly produce musical shows at a touch of a button, it is easy to forget that passive participation is not the same as active participation. A child can join in singing with a TV show but there is no back and forth interaction in this activity. The face-to-face nature of making music together with pots and pans in the kitchen, dancing to the beat and laughing together, offers a child many more benefits.

Parents, nurseries and schools may wish to consider giving children lots of varied opportunities to be exposed to music. Shaking that tambourine is not just about making noise, it is about equipping a child with new skills and sparking interest in the world around them.

Music at home From 18 months, children can begin to sing. It may not be tuneful - or even recognisable - but exploring their voice is a great starting point in their journey with music. Singing nursery rhymes to your baby and toddler with actions is great fun for everyone. Drumming, tapping and clapping is a fantastic way to explore beats and timing. Learning how to make the sound loud, soft, fast, slow or in patterns gives children an awareness of action and consequence. Movement with the music stimulates brain development and neural connections in the brain, so why not try to incorporate dance too? Creating a dance routine or dancing around the room to a lively tune also gives children a fantastic way to learn about their body - how it moves, and how the movement makes them feel, providing a pathway to create self-awareness.

3 WAYS TO YOUR

ARRIVAL HOME Being a parent isn’t the easiest job in the world but guess what, you don’t find that out until you actually are one! Life can be full on and sometimes it’s just too easy to forget to make time for the things that really matter. Here are three things you can do every day that I promise will make a real difference to your family when you get home from work.

1. DITCH THE GRUMPY PARENT. Be the best parent you can be every night when you get in from work or they get home from school. Often after a busy day when you stumble through the door and are greeted by your family, this is when ‘grumpy parent’ can appear. ‘Give me five minutes won’t you, PLEASE!’ But literally you only need to give them two minutes… step through the door and shout, ‘I’m home, come get me!’ This will indeed prompt the same reaction and you can give them a full two minutes of hugs and questions, ooooo’s and aaahhh’s, and then they will scurry away happy for the time being! Try it, it’s really that simple.

2. GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME. As humans we have an average lifespan of 4000 weeks, so time is precious and short. The trick is to spend it wisely. Children won’t remember what you bought them but they do remember ‘times together’. This time, once gone, can never be regained. With our children we don’t realise how fast this time goes; one minute you are changing their nappy and the next you are crying as you pack them off to university or to travel around the world.

3. PRACTICE GRATITUDE. Do it every morning when you wake up (woohoo, I’m alive! ), while you brush your teeth (how amazing, I still have my own teeth), look in the mirror (hello gorgeous), eat your breakfast (yummy food in my tum), commute to work (I have a car, with cup holders and a secret sunglasses compartment!), etc. If you can do this all through the day then your mood will be super-positive when you step in the door each evening. Then you can practice gratitude as a table time activity with your family - go around and say one thing that you are grateful for today. Be thankful for the food you eat and when family life is getting like an uphill struggle, stop and think of ten reasons to be grateful for your family.

Most of all, every evening when you return home remember, you are a role model. The general rule of parenting is that your children won’t do what you say, but they will do what you do. Hence, if you want positive, happy, well-mannered offspring, the best thing can do is live those qualities yourself. Every single day. TRYING FOR NUMBER Secondary infertility is the most common type of infertility in women, yet many sufferers don’t seek out treatment. Fertility expert Dr. Larisa Corda, a regular on This Morning, explains more about the condition and what can be done about it. Secondary infertility is defined as a problem with becoming pregnant after you have conceived at least once before. People often underestimate how common this actually is, especially after the age of 35 when natural fertility declines much more significantly. Aside from the effect of age and the impact this has on egg numbers and quality, secondary infertility may be due to the onset of new medical or gynaecological conditions, such as fibrods, or Asherman’s syndrome. It could be that you suffer from endometriosis or PCOS and that these conditions have got worse. Your lifestyle habits may have also have changed, your partner’s sperm may not quite be what it used to be, or you may have a new partner. Secondary infertility often has a lot of guilt associated with it. Many couples feel hesitant about seeking help and tend to delay, due to the worry of feeling judged by others if they already have a child, including their doctor. But if you suspect there’s a problem and you’ve been trying for a year if under 35, or 6 months if 35 or over, it’s vital you go and see your GP to start some initial investigations. These can include simple blood tests to look at hormone levels, as well as a semen analysis and pelvic ultrasound scan to look at the womb and ovaries. Sometimes further tests are undertaken that look at fallopian tubes as well.

POSSIBLE TREATMENTS Treatment can range from continuing to try naturally if the tests are normal, to taking drugs such as clomid to help induce ovulation, intra uterine insemination, IVF and ultimately donor eggs or sperm. If there’s anything that needs to be fixed surgically, this can be done before treatment and may in itself be enough to allow you to get pregnant, such as treatment to endometriosis. With the help of your doctor, create a plan as to what you are willing to try and within what sort of time frame, so that the experience doesn’t feel like an endless void and you create certain goalposts which motivate you, but do not leave you in despair if they have to be changed or shifted.

ASK FOR HELP Just because you have been pregnant before does not mean the second time round is any easier, especially if the first pregnancy ended in miscarriage or never came to be realised. The pursuit of another can often bring up emotions of sadness, fear, anger and disappointment and so it’s important to manage this stress with the help of a counsellor, who can enable you and your partner to navigate your journey and deal with any pressure from relatives, friends or even your younger child, about having a sibling.

Remember it’s OK to ask for help, and having been pregnant before is often a good prognostic sign. But things may have changed in terms of the health of you or your partner, and the sooner this is investigated, the better the chance of being able to do something to help you to conceive. Dr Larisa Corda is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and is one of the UK’s leading Fertility experts. After 12 weekly sessions of play therapy, Alice had expressed some of her anger and distress, and learned how to tell her parents what she needed from them. I facilitated several family sessions, which enabled everyone to understand the importance of listening and reflecting. Over half of couples divorcing in the UK in 2007 had at least one child aged under 16. This meant that there were over 110,000 children who were aged under 16 when their parents divorced, and 20% of these children were under five years old. However, many more children go through parental separation each year that are not included in figures like this, as their parents were not married (The Royal College of Psychiatrists). When parents decide to live apart, the level of upset the child feels can vary depending on how their parents separated, the age of the child, how much they understand and the support they get from parents, family and friends. In children up to the age of nine, their world is a dependent one, in which they rely on parents to meet their physical, psychological and emotional needs. So when parents separate and divorce, a child may feel: • A sense of loss – a child loses their home and way of life. • Afraid of being left alone – if one parent leaves, perhaps the other parent will too. • Angry at one or both parents. • Anxious about having caused the parental separation; guilty. • Rejected and insecure. • Torn between both parents; disloyal.

Emotional and behavioural problems Children can become insecure when their parents separate because the separation may trigger how they express their attachment. If a child has an insecure attachment style, it is likely that their behaviour will reflect that insecurity. Seeing their parents separate through divorce may cause children to regress to a younger age. A parent may, therefore, see bedwetting, clinginess, nightmares, worries and general disobedience. Some of these behaviours may also show up at school and can be distressing for the child who is now ‘standing out’ in the classroom, and may feel like they are losing their dignity and privacy. This type of behaviour can happen before or after visits to the parent who is living apart from the family. These are red flags and may mean parents need to offer additional emotional and practical support at home.

How to help your child through a divorce • Routine. The loss of a routine can quickly destabilise a child’s emotional equilibrium, making them feel insecure. Maintaining a regular routine helps a child cope with increased anxiety and change. • Acceptance. A child’s age and developmental level can affect how he or she understands loss, and a child’s grief looks different from an adult’s. Children do not always cry or immediately show emotion but this does not mean they are not deeply affected by the loss. • Keep it real. Be open and honest about what happened. Doing so lets a child know that it is not taboo to talk about painful feelings. • Rituals. Invite children to create new rituals as well as maintain established and cherished ones. If they are living in two homes, this will help them settle and accept change.

These feelings can be made worse by the fact that many children have to leave their family home, live somewhere else and sometimes change schools. Most families separating will face some financial hardship, even if they did not experience money difficulties before. This can bring loss in the form of a child being unable to continue their extracurricular activities, and these changes can cause emotional stress for the parent and child, therefore impacting their relationship.

• Signposts. Increased anxiety can manifest itself as loss of appetite, loss of sleep or lack of interest in things such as playing games or attending school. It is important not to focus on the behaviour (as doing so may only make it worse) but, instead, help them acknowledge the feelings that are driving their behaviour.

Even if the parental relationship had been tense or violent, children may still have mixed feelings about their parents’ separation. The children I have seen in my practice have all held onto a wish that their parents would get back together, restoring the family unit.

• Story. If talking directly about the loss is difficult for the child, reading a story can help them access their feelings through character and metaphor because it makes them feel safe while they express their grief.

Amanda Seyderhelm is a recognised authority in the play therapy field, having worked extensively with children at Great Ormond Street Hospital, in Primary Schools and in private practice. Amanda’s second book, Helping Children Cope with Loss and Change: A guide for parents and professionals offers practical tools to help children experiencing emotional difficulties associated with bereavement and other major life changes. www.amandaseyderhelm.com
