y Craft a D s ’ r e h t o M s F lo w e r Ca rd Sun 6th March

Perfect for Mother’s Day, this is an easy craft that your little ones can get involved with and enjoy!

You will need:

• Coloured Paper s he rus t B ain • Paint & P • Buttons (optional) • Glue • Scissors • Crayons/pens 4) Stack up the circles by size. One large, one medium and then a small. Then glue them together. 5) For the middle of the flower, glue on a button.

1) Let your little one paint colours on some brightly coloured paper/card, splatting, smearing, finger painting or make prints with cookie cutters. 2) When the painted paper is dry, cut out circles in three different sizes. For ease, draw around cups of different sizes before cutting. 3) Now you have three sizes of circles, get your little one to crumple each circle up and then flatten it out again. The crumpling will give the flowers a 3D effect so they look more like real flower petals.

6) On a separate piece of folded card/paper, your little one should then draw stems, leaves and grass. 7) With a dab of glue, attach the flower to their stems to finish off the cards!

, r a e Y w e N s i h nise T a g r O d n A r e t t u l Dec Your Life Living with little ones means accepting a certain amount of chaos. But toys underfoot, overstuffed laundry hampers, and hectic schedules all wear us down far more than we realise. Is it any wonder that at the beginning of a new year we resolve to clear out our clutter and be more organised? Clutter can get in your way not only physically, but mentally. Paring down can help you find things faster, get more done, and think more clearly – all of which can make parenting easier. As a professional declutterer and organiser, here are my suggestions for simplifying your family’s living spaces and schedules.

Clear the decks!

Keep like with like

Start by letting go of things you don’t need any more: clothes the kids have grown out of, toys and books that are past their prime, and items you never use or know you no longer need. Donate usable items to charity and bin the rest. Allow yourself to get through this task at your own pace, and don’t forget to pat yourself on the back! It’s hard work, but you’ll be amazed at how good it feels.

Store the same types of items together. Make them accessible and easy to tidy up: for example, all toy cars in one box, all stuffed animals in a basket. Don’t spend money on fancy organising supplies; shoe boxes and laundry baskets make perfectly fine containers.

Streamline your schedule

CHOOSE EXPERIENCES OVER THINGS.

Overfull calendars are another kind of clutter. If you constantly worry about getting out of the house on time, or about making it from point A to point B, take a good look at your timetable to ascertain which activities you can cut. Babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers don’t need highly regimented days – they’ll get enough of that when they start school. Instead of overstimulating them with too many activities, let some of their time remain unscripted.

Make it your family philosophy to do more things together instead of acquiring new items. By spending your money on experiences, you won’t have to make room for new objects in your house. Instead, you’ll be making happy memories together. Our little ones’ early years go by quickly, and what they really want from us is our time and undivided attention – not more toys.

TAKE A ‘ONE IN, ONE OUT’ APPROACH Make it a family rule to part with one old item (of similar size or value) whenever something new comes into the house. You’ll be far more selective about your purchases if you know you’ll have to jettison something you already own when you buy something new.

As you gradually put your living space and your calendar in order, remember that decluttering and organising is a process. Your house will never be perfectly tidy and your schedule may not run entirely smoothly. Instead, gauge your progress by how you feel: has letting go of some items made you feel more clear-headed? Has simplifying your days made you slow down and appreciate your time with your child? If so, you’re doing great – even if that laundry hamper is still stuffed full.

Nadia Arbach is a member of APDO, the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers UK. She works with families in Oxfordshire to simplify their living spaces and routines. If you’re looking for someone to guide you through the seas of clutter into open space where you can live your best life, visit http://clearthedecks.co.uk or email Nadia at clearthedecksUK@gmail.com. The Greatest Gift An introduction to HypnoBirthing – how you can have a calm and enjoyable birth experience By Helen Discombe, Born Smiling. When Fearne Cotton gave birth to her daughter, Honey, in September last year, she described it as “the most intense and euphoric experience ever”. She went on to say, “My first birth was a different story so I’ve experienced varying sides of birth and glad for both. Although all we want is a healthy baby I think we should remember how amazing the female body is and the strength of a woman. Obviously there is no right or wrong birth and they can be magical in many ways I just feel blessed to have had this experience thanks to hypnobirthing”.

So What Is HypnoBirthing? For the uninitiated, HypnoBirthing often conjures up images of swinging watches and hypnotic trances, but nothing could be further from the truth. In his book Childbirth Without Fear, author Dr Grantly Dick-Read introduced us (back in the 1920s) to the idea that it is fear that makes childbirth so painful. He postulated that fear leads to tension in the birthing body, which then causes increased levels of pain. This pain in turn fuels the fear and so this cycle builds and continues. With HypnoBirthing this cycle is broken by teaching specific relaxation techniques which remove tension in the mind and body, undoing the associated fear of childbirth and, ultimately, eliminating the pain of childbirth. There are many methods of hypnobirthing available in the UK. I use The Mongan Method which is the original HypnoBirthing programme, created by Marie Mongan, and has been helping women to have safe and comfortable births for more than 25 years.

How You Can Learn to Practise HypnoBirthing HypnoBirthing techniques are either taught as a traditional group antenatal class, or in private sessions. The classes focus on undoing the fear of childbirth, which is typically achieved through a series of steps. First comes understanding, where the parents-to-be learn about how our bodies are designed to give birth - how our muscles work together during labour and the roles that our hormones play. Then you learn breathing techniques that help you to work with your body while in labour. Classes include lots of guided relaxation, and you are taught how to find a deep state of relaxation quickly and also how to remain calm and relaxed. Birth partners also learn techniques so they are able to support you on your birthing day. Finally, hypnosis (essentially a heightened state of relaxation), is used to remove negative imagery of birth by introducing and reinforcing positive messages. Methods of hypnosis include visualisation techniques.

What HypnoBirthing Isn’t HypnoBirthing isn’t just about “getting through labour”. It’s about helping women to call upon their natural birthing instinct. Through its practices you learn to listen to your body and your baby. Many of the relaxation techniques are really useful postnatally too, especially when you’re faced with a potentially stressful situation. HypnoBirthing isn’t just about natural childbirth, or home birth. It is about preparing the mind and the body for birth, wherever that may be and whatever path that may take. It is about preparing for a calm and enjoyable birth experience – which, in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest gifts it is possible to give yourself and your baby.

Helen lives in Stokenchurch, High Wycombe with her partner, HypnoBaby (aged two) and a cat. She is a HypnoBirthing Practioner accredited by the HypnoBirthing Institute and runs Born Smiling, teaching HypnoBirthing classes in High Wycombe and Thame as well as offering private sessions across South Buckinghamshire and South Oxfordshire. www.bornsmiling.co.uk

Growing my part-time business around Advertorial Utility my young children enables meWarehouse to be a full-time mum and still earn a great income. When you’re on maternity leave every penny counts, so when my husband Simon and I discovered we were able to make substantial savings on our utilities by bundling our phone, broadband, gas, electricity AND mobile phone all together on one monthly bill, we didn’t hesitate. We didn’t even have to contact our old providers as Utility Warehouse switched everything for us and even gave us up to £200 to get us out of existing contracts. We’ve since been given additional benefits too, as when Utility Warehouse launch something new, they treat new and existing customers the same. The icing on the cake for us is that we also get more money off our bills every time we shop at the likes of Sainsbury’s, M&S, Mothercare, Boots, Toys R Us, Argos and eBay plus 2000 more online stores – places we already shop. This soon mounts up and we make further savings every month with the Utility Warehouse cashback options. Some months we have even had earned enough cashback to pay off some of our services entirely! One thing led to another and we quickly decided to become distributors for Utility Warehouse ourselves – something anyone can do – my husband Simon and

I have now been representatives for over two years. It’s a fantastic business that fits into the nooks and crannies of our day. A ten-minute conversation here, a few phone calls there and all we do is save other people money. There are no products to buy or store and you get paid every month for doing a job once. We literally work a few hours a week and we now earn a growing income every month. I really can’t recommend Utility Warehouse enough whether it is to save money, as a flexible way to earn money or on top of your full time commitments as a ‘Plan B’. You don’t need any experience as training is free and you can earn a regular ongoing income, plus bonuses and incentives along the way. Just two years in, we’ve already qualified for a free luxury family holiday and a BMW Mini on top of getting paid! We are well on our way to a better financial future and you can be too. We also offer a free review to show you where you could save on your services. There is absolutely no obligation to go ahead. Please contact Kirstie on 07967 399449 to find out more.

EASTER egg

HUNT

Sunday 27th March

The Easter Egg Hunt is an annual tradition for many families – our children look forward to it almost as much as Christmas! But keeping it fresh each year can be a challenge, so here’s a great egg hunt idea that is not only fun, but also helps with learning to read (a bit!).

You'll just need a few simple items:

• Paper • Scissors

• Pens • Plastic Eggs

11) Start by writing down a word(s) on a piece of paper – use a different colour for each letter and space each letter out as you will be cutting them out in a moment. Do this twice, so you have two pieces of paper that look the same.

You might use the words for your prize (e.g. 'Easter Egg'), or you could choose a word or letters that achieve a particular learning objective such as teaching the vowels, or two-letter words. 2 Cut out each letter from one piece of paper, so all 5) letters are separated. 3 Pop each of the cut out letters in its own plastic egg. 5)

5 When your little one 5) W

returns with all their eggs, give them the 2nd piece of paper with the prize word written on it. 6) As they open their 6 eggs, your child now needs to match the letters they have found with the letters on the piece of paper (you may want to stick them down with a bit of glue). If they are little, or unsure of their letters, this is where the colours come into play – they can use the colours to find the match if needs be.

7 Onc Once all the letters are 7) in place, you can sound it out with them - and now your little one can have their prize!

5) No Now w the fun begins! Hide 4

the eggs around your home and/or garden. Then let your little ones loose to find all the eggs!

Return to

North Hayne Farm Cottages, North Devon

The lights were on, it was toasty warm and, as I walked into Squirrel Nutkin cottage, it seemed that all the tension in my body just dissipated… it felt as if we had come home. It was a comment echoed by a couple of the other families staying at North Hayne Farm Cottages at the same time as us – and one of them was on their 5th visit! Which begs the question – why is this place so special?

Editor Review: By Tim Freed

14

Jan-Mar 2016 Toddle About

We first stayed at these delightful holiday cottages in October 2014, and we loved it. We are not the kind of family that typically returns to the same place to holiday each year - we tend to prefer new experiences and new places - but this place has something about it.

The

A week before the holiday, someone asked our children where they were going. The reply was instant; “Cheryl and Rogers!” “Oh,” said our friend, slightly confused, “You’re visiting friends?” Which turned out to be a hard question to answer. You see, Cheryl and Roger own the farm, so on the surface our relationship is transactional – we pay them for our holiday. But they are such lovely people and they are such a part of your holiday, that I really do feel like they have become friends. Another ‘something’ that makes this place special is the children’s farm they have built on site, with bunnies, guinea pigs, chipmunks, pigs, sheep, alpaca, goats, ducks and ponies. The children are invited to feed the animals twice a day at set times – and they have a donkey

ride every morning! From the way they stampede out the door of the cottage in the morning, I don’t think there’s a better way for a child to start their day. This regular animal feeding does something else as well as entertaining the children though – it brings all the visiting families together. You end up chatting and getting to know the other guests – and your hosts - in a way that I haven’t experienced on any other holiday. The camaraderie that develops between you and the other guests enhances the whole experience in a hard-to-explain way. Both times we have visited now the children have hit it off and made firm friends. Every cottage has its own hot tub, which is a lovely touch, and this year we enjoyed a family dip after it got dark one evening. It was then that we discovered that Exmoor National Park, where the

farm is located, is an official Dark Sky Reserve… Watching shooting stars fly across the autumn sky from the warmth of a hot tub in such an idyllic setting is a memory we will all treasure for a long time to come. Some things had changed this year – but all for the better, I’m pleased to report. In particular, the children’s farm has been upgraded to a larger, properly concreted area with brand new, purpose-built barns, and a dedicated walk area for the donkeys. It was opened by the mayor and is a really excellent development. But the things that make this place so truly fabulous haven’t changed a bit and, despite our penchant for new experiences, I have a feeling that our annual holiday to ‘Cheryl and Rogers’ has become a new family tradition.

Say It Loud, Say It Clear! Communication: The secret to lasting, loving and rewarding relationships By Svetlina Jeanneret Communication is a vast topic and a great one. A lot of my work with clients revolves around the way we communicate first with ourselves openly or secretly and also how we communicate with those closest to us. I believe that in a family where there are two parents the most important relationship is that of the couple. Yet communication between men and women is not always straightforward; this is partly why John Gray’s book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus is still such a hit. In my consulting room, I continually hear anecdotes of miscommunication and misunderstandings which, little by little, can erode even the most loving and devoted of relationships. Communication is not something we can ever stop working at because our internal world is so complex. Here are some key ideas to help you along the way.

1. Understand each other’s communication styles

There is a reason why personality profiling is so popular in business and sport. A family is a small team with individual strengths, weaknesses and preferred communication styles. Why not fill out a personality profile together and see what you can learn about each other? This is a great way to open a dialogue about how to best communicate with each other in different situations.

2. Seek to understand, then to be understood

One of our deepest needs is to feel understood. We relax when we feel that another really understands us - we no longer need to defend our position quite so fiercely and we’ll more readily listen intently in return. Learning to listen deeply takes some practice but the results are amazing because the depth of the connection you form strengthens your relationship.

3. Timing is everything

When you have something tricky to say, wait for a moment when they will not feel under attack, particularly if your partner already feels tense. It may also help to settle some of your own emotions and help you gain perspective on the situation.

4. Say it loud, say it clear

Learn to communicate your needs and wants clearly. So often I hear, “But I thought he’d have tidied the kitchen. He knew we were going to get home late” or, “She didn’t tell me that she needed help with the shopping”. Assuming that our other half understands our needs and wants without clear communication from us creates so much tension, especially when it comes to home chores. The idea that others can read our minds is romantic but treacherous.

5. Talk things through

Debrief when things have gone wrong. Seek to understand where it’s gone wrong, listen to each other and make a plan you’re both happy with for next time you find yourselves in a similar situation. View it as a learning opportunity. The more we invest in learning to understand each other, communicate positively and respect each other’s needs and personality, the more fulfilling and solid our relationships can become.

Controversy Corner

My Two Dads Nick King, a gay adoptive father of two, gives us a glimpse of family life with two Dads.

People are funny aren’t they? Kind. But often very funny. My name is Nick, my husband is Jay and we have two children. Our son is now eight having come home to us when he was three. Our daughter, now four, came home when she was eighteen months old. Both adopted. Not birth siblings. But they do look very alike. “The work of a good Adoption Social Worker,” I say by rote in answer to that question, invariably asked when people have summoned up enough courage to do so.

Regardless of age and background, recipients of the news that we, a male couple, have two children have at worst been polite and at best enthusiastic. Occasionally, whilst positive, the response still takes us by surprise. Sadly, my Mum died the day before our son came home with us for the first time. My Dad, now a widower, lives in a sheltered housing development in the town close to where we live. His default position in relation to his neighbours is one of being anti social. Largely female, the other residents congregate often in their communal room. They have morning coffee and afternoon tea, they organise birthday treats, film shows and sherry parties. They celebrate annual and national events with their own genteel get togethers.

20

Jan-Mar 2016 Toddle About

The children get a treat too. The centre of much elderly cooing attention, they are assured their pick of the biscuits or cakes the ladies have to accompany whichever event they are attending. So while I am undertaking my daily visit to see my Dad, if the residents are congregated in their communal room the children will often spend some time there.

Throughout our adoption journey, we’ve generally found support, tolerance and even admiration from those around us and those we have come across. Inquisitiveness too, sometimes misplaced, but never malicious.

Grandad rarely attends.

We, on the other hand, try and join in. The ladies like to see the children. Those who do have family locally tend to be the grandparents of now much older children, so to have our young son and daughter visit their communal room is a treat.

We are incredibly lucky with our adopted children. They are both blonde. They both sport tans easily obtained in the summer. We are very proud that they are also kind, attentive and polite in the presence of others. They are particularly well behaved around the elderly. So, their visits to the elderly ladies in the communal room are enjoyed by all, with both sides of the equation obtaining pleasure from the visit. As we visited Grandad a little while ago one of his elderly neighbours stopped us. After initial greetings and pleasantries about the weather she said, “we’ve been talking about your little family,” “Oh? I hope the children have been behaving,” I said, casting an eye at our little darlings as they chased around the development’s communal lawn. “Oh yes, they are an absolute credit to you,” Grandad’s neighbour said. “They’re such good looking children too.” “Thank you,” I said.

The

“Yes, we were all saying that the other afternoon. Do you know? We just couldn’t decide. Which one of you they looked like more.” Jay and I shared a quizzical glance. “Um, I’ll try and explain.” he said. “Don’t you dare!” I replied. “Lovely, quite lovely,” Grandad’s neighbour said as she walked away. Our children don’t seem to blink at having two male parents. Clearly, other people don’t seem to take too much notice either, or indeed notice at all. Except for one day of the year. The fourth Sunday in Lent, which for us in the UK, is Mothering Sunday. The rest of the world generally celebrates Mother’s Day in June. I don’t know why we in Britain choose March, we just do. As, unsurprisingly, do Ireland and also perhaps more surprisingly, Nigeria.

years various teachers, play school helpers and creche supervisors approach the inevitable ‘for whom should we make the card’ conversation with us with visible dread. Last year, our daughter’s play school teacher approached me and asked, in slightly embarrassed tones, “Mother’s Day is coming up, we’ll be making cards, who should we help your daughter make a card for?” The teacher shifted uneasily from foot to foot. “Don’t worry, let her make a card for whoever she wants to, it could be Granny, or one of her aunts maybe?” I said. The teacher looked slightly happier. “Please don’t worry, it really isn’t a big deal,” I reassured her. Those are words I have found myself saying very often. “It isn’t a big deal. We genuinely don’t mind. Please don’t worry.”

So Mothering Sunday is a constantly moving fixture of the British Spring. This year it’s early, on March 6th.

The concern of those around our children to ensure they are not left out, but that equally we are not offended in any way, is I think extraordinarily thoughtful and kind. Putting them at ease becomes a concern in itself.

Cue numerous cards depicting daffodils and tulips made by adoring children for their doe eyed mothers. For weeks ahead of the date playschools, kindergartens and school early years classes are filled with children madly gluing, pasting and colouring their cards ready for presentation on the big day.

Approaching Mother’s Day I face the dilemma. Do I wait for the children’s teachers to raise the annual issue with me, or should I say something first? If I say something, does that give the impression that actually we are concerned about it? If I say nothing I condemn them to having to raise the issue with me.

That pressure never leaves the dutiful British child.

One word describes the situation. Awkward.

I had a friend when I was a teenager who invariably forgot it was Mothering Sunday. In North Devon, where I grew up, the country lanes are sunken between earth banks topped with hedges. At this time of year they abound with daffodils.

Believe it or not we also face similarly awkward issues when Father’s Day comes around. This time of course there’s no problem about to whom the children should address their card.

My friend would therefore get up, often slightly the worse for wear, early on the morning of Mothering Sunday. He would drive around the lanes near his parents’ farm holding his arm out of the window, grasping bunches of daffodils as he went. Upon his return from this frantic drive he would present his mother with the largest bunch possible, normally wrapped in newspaper. The condition of the daffodils varied, some had short stems, some had long, quite a few still had their bulbs attached to their roots. So against this background of brief Mothering Sunday hysteria, it’s understandable that over the

No, the issue in the run up to Father’s Day usually consists of a concern that insufficient time or resource has been allocated to allow our children to create two Father’s Day cards. Therefore, (embarrassed pause and shuffling) would it be OK if the children just made one card for the two of us? The poor, kind, lovely professionals who look after our children.

Why every parent should be

Limit Scre ing e Time n

teaching their child to limit time in front of the screen.

Fifteen years ago it was common to have one TV in the corner of the lounge and one computer on a desk in the study. Ten years ago we started having computers on our laps, now we have them in our pockets. They’re coming closer!

It’s the first time they’ve been quiet all day, it’s your first moment of peace and there’s still another 5 hours until bedtime. They’re absorbed in playing a game or watching a video, it’s educational, it’s benefitting them. But have you set the limit for how long your child can be on their tablet? And with this shift comes a new set of skills. Far more than ever before, we now need to train our children to be able to cope with self-limiting their screen time. As adults we are familiar with that feeling when you have spent too long on the computer or you need a breath of fresh air. We know when to

go and make a cup of tea or how to do something completely different to rest our eyes. Children are prone to overindulging; they don’t know when to stop and it causes many a toddler tantrum. We learn how to self-regulate our desires and wants during the ages of 2-4 based on our experiences as a baby of being soothed when we got too worked up. In our early years this is externally regulated by our parents - our selfregulation of emotions comes later. Consider sweets as an example, where without your guiding words very often they’d keep on eating them; as they grow older our children then develop the ability to say no themselves. It is no different with screen time and technology. Initially you have to regulate their use, so that your child can recognise when they

Maybe for young children you’ll use a timer, and for the older ones a set time, even during teenage years. Discuss with your children how you know when your eyes are tired, help them to recognise when they’ve had enough. Teach them when to take a break and get some fresh air (this will be a vital skill as they go through their teenage years!). As a family have regular days non-screen days. Most of all remember why you’re doing this - you want them to develop the skills that they will need in the future. This is a skill that we need to teach children from a young age so they don’t even think twice about limiting their screen time when they get older.
