Throw a devilishly fun Halloween party for your little ones this year with some of these fantastic ideas from Carole Middleton and our friends at partypieces.co.uk.

FREAKY FANCY DRESS Your little one may not be ready to trick-or-treat on their own, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be part of the Halloween fun. Costumes come in all shapes and sizes and there are even ones for the smallest of babies. Spidery temporary tattoos are also hugely popular.

Our particular favourite is to fill buckets with squidgy jelly eyes, slippery sweet snakes plus a good handful of plastic spiders and creepy crawlies - eek! You will no doubt get some bogeymen visitors to your house too, and kids love the opportunity to scare these unsuspecting ghouls. Decorate your front door to let your neighbourhood know you welcome trick or treaters. Little ones will love answering the door to all sorts of crazy creatures and handing out the treats.

If you have a few children to entertain try setting up some trick or treat ‘scary stations’ around the house and garden for them to enjoy. Simply hide an assortment of toys and treats along the way.

Sausage Mummies

DECORATING PUMPKINS

Ingredients: Flour to sprinkle 12 sausages 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 x pack of ready rolled puff pastry Soft cheese and chopped black olives, to decorate 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas mark 6. 2. Lightly flour your surface and roll out the pastry to approx. 0.5cm thick. 3. Cut the pastry into long, thin strips approx. 0.5cm wide. 4. Wrap the pastry strips around each sausage to create the mummy effect. You’ll need 1-2 strips of pastry per sausage. 5. Brush with the beaten egg and place on a lined baking tray. 6. Bake in the oven for 18-20 minutes – until the sausage is cooked through and the pastry is puffed and golden. 7. Once cooled, add eyes to your mummy sausages with blobs of cream cheese and small pieces of black olives.

Carving pumpkins is one of the joys of Halloween, but it can be quite difficult to involve small fingers, especially when the kitchen knives come out! These painted pumpkins are really effective, all you need is some white acrylic paint (or glow-in-the-dark paint for extra effect) and a range of colourful sharpies to add your designs with.

When we released the first edition of Toddle About back in January 2010, our goal was – as it still is – to help families love life with little ones. That goal hasn’t changed – but the world moves on around us. Technology pervades our lives more and more each year, and we are embracing these advances so that Toddle About can do more for you than ever before.

The new website will help you take the next step – it will show you if a class or event has availability (including free trials) and you will be able to book and pay for it directly from the Toddle About website (or join a waiting list where appropriate). To enable this to happen, we have built our own booking system. It is called Ticked It, because it is all about helping you to do more stuff - to tick things off your list.

We have a big vision. We want Toddle About to make it easier for you to do more of the things you love with your family and friends. We are already working towards this, and the first piece of the jigsaw is to totally revamp the Toddle About website.

We will be launching the new Toddle About website, powered by Ticked It, early next year – but Ticked It is already being used by plenty of businesses to take bookings via their own websites and save time for themselves and their customers. Businesses like these (check them out!):

Death

Losing your spouse and your child within the space of 13 months would break most of us. Stephanie Nimmo shares how open conversations about death helped her family to cope and really live life to the full. We really are not good at talking about death in this country, are we? It’s almost a taboo subject, to be whispered about in hushed tones. Yet the only guarantee we have in life is that one day we will die. As soon as we get our heads around that fact we can get on with living and enjoying our lives. Sadly, I know all too well how precious and unpredictable life really is. In the course of 13 months I lost my husband to cancer and my 12-year-old daughter to the effects of a rare genetic syndrome. It’s unimaginable. What my experience has taught me however is that it’s really important to have open and honest conversations about death and dying with your close family. I have three older children and they knew from day one that their little sister was not going to live to become an adult. They knew that the time we had with her was precious and that we had to enjoy every moment. We spent the years with Daisy making memories, having fun and just enjoying the here and now, not worrying too much about the future and what would inevitably happen. Although she spent a lot of time in hospital, the times when she was at home taught us to appreciate the little things; sitting together around the table as a family, curling up on the sofa to watch a film together, a bedtime story after bath time.

Daddy (Andy) & Daisy

None of us know what life has in store. None of us know how long we have got on this earth. My husband and I always assumed that we would outlive our youngest daughter and we would be together to support each other when she eventually passed away. Sadly, that was not to be. Just a few weeks before Daisy’s 10th birthday we learned that Andy had incurable, stage 4 colorectal cancer. Suddenly our time together really was finite. Living as we already did with a member of our family who we knew was going to have a shortened life, we knew how to live life to the full. The year that Andy was on treatment was a year of such contrasts, sadness as we processed the fact that our time together was so limited, happiness that we were able to spend what time we had together making memories, having fun. We ticked off a couple of bucket list items – a last visit to the Emirates stadium as a family to see Andy’s beloved Arsenal play, a trip to see the Foo Fighters play at Milton Keynes Bowl (complete with a meet and greet with the great Dave Grohl himself ). We also made a lot of plans. We discussed Andy’s funeral wishes (lots of music and laughter, inappropriate jokes and a huge party), we talked about what we wanted for the children’s future and how they should be supported in fulfilling their dreams. We discussed practical stuff, we got our affairs in order, as the British so politely say.

We also made sure that our wills were up to date. Before Daisy had arrived in our lives making a will was not on our to do list but we soon learned that it’s so important to make a will, especially when you have young children. If anything were to happen to us, what would happen to Daisy? Who would look after the children? There was even a risk that if we didn’t name guardians our children could be taken into care until the situation was sorted. Andy lived for 13 months after his diagnosis. The doctors had hoped that aggressive treatment would buy Andy some time to see our children grow up but sadly that was not to be. Just before Christmas in 2015, a week before Daisy’s 11th birthday, I became the sole parent to four grieving children. It’s not what you want your children to experience, the loss of their parent at such a young age, but I am convinced that because Andy and I spoke very honestly and openly about death and dying it helped them, they were not scared, just sad. The older two children spoke at Andy’s funeral, they were very involved in making sure we gave him a great send off, just as he wanted. I let them guide me in how much they wanted to be involved and I made sure that they had the space and opportunity to talk about it all and discuss how they were feeling. I also did not hide my emotions from them, I needed them to see that it was OK to cry and feel sad and these things were all perfectly natural. Daisy, being the youngest, was heartbroken. Despite her learning disability she knew that Daddy had been very poorly and had died and she would never see him again. She would tell everyone who came to our house about daddy and that she was sad. She didn’t come to his funeral but a few weeks later we went to stay at our local children’s hospice for a respite break and we released some balloons into the sky so that she could say her own goodbye to her Daddy. Sadly, Daisy’s health deteriorated over the following year and just 13 months after we said goodbye to Andy, Daisy passed away.

In what seemed like the most awful déjà vu I found myself having to organise another funeral while I had barely started grieving for my husband.. It was so tough, I had not expected to go through this without Andy but in many ways we had also been preparing for this moment for years and I knew exactly what Andy would have wanted for our daughter as we had discussed it openly when he was alive. My situation is obviously very extreme but by sharing it,

After Andy died our funeral arranger told me how often she is faced with grieving relatives who have no idea if their loved one wanted to be buried or cremated, what sort of funeral they wanted, where they wanted ashes scattered. My solicitor told me how she has had to deal with the intricacies of inheritance and guardianship at a time when emotions are so heightened because no will had been made. Prior to Daisy arriving on the scene I really didn’t think about my own mortality. Having a life limited child changed that. When Andy was diagnosed with incurable cancer we were able to have very open conversations about death. I now spend a lot of my time encouraging other people to have these conversations, to make sure they have told someone of their wishes, sorted out their will, even thought about organ donation, so that when the time comes it’s one less thing for those who are left behind to worry about.

Ultimate beef hotpot with gnocchi dumplings

n um Aut cipe Re What you need:

• 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 leeks, trimmed and sliced • 2 carrots, peeled and diced • 2 parsnips, peeled and diced • 400 g/14 oz braising steak, cut into bite-sized pieces • 450 ml/16 fl oz reduced-salt beef stock

Serves 4-6 people

• 1 tablespoon tomato purée • 1 long rosemary sprig • 1 bay leaf • 100 g/3½ oz drained canned green lentils • 500 g/1 lb 2 oz ready-made gnocchi • 30 g/1 oz mature Cheddar cheese, grated • Green vegetables, to serve

What to do 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4. Heat half the oil in a large flameproof casserole dish over a medium heat. Add the leeks, carrots and parsnips and cook for 5 minutes until softened. 2. Using a slotted spoon, remove the vegetables and set aside. Add the remaining oil and brown the beef all over for 5 minutes. Return the vegetables to the casserole with the stock, tomato purée, rosemary and bay leaf and bring to the boil. Stir, cover with a lid and put the casserole in the oven for 45 minutes.

3. Blend the lentils to a coarse paste or mash with a potato masher. Remove the rosemary from the casserole and stir in the lentils. Cover with a lid and cook in the oven for another 30 minutes, adding more stock or water if needed, or until the beef is tender. 4 Meanwhile, cook the gnocchi in a large saucepan of boiling water, following the packet instructions, then drain well. 5. Preheat the grill to medium–high. Spoon the gnocchi on top of the casserole, scatter the cheese over the top and place the casserole under the grill for 10 minutes, or until the cheese has melted. Leave to cool slightly, then serve with green vegetables.

How music and singing are intrinsically linked to language development ϴ

We don’t really need an expert to tell us that babies respond to music. Whether it’s the soothing effect of a lullaby sung to our soon-to-be sleeping child or the fun of a rhythmic rocking nursery rhyme as we row, row, row, our boats together. Our babies clearly love to hear our voices for both comfort and security, and the shared natural experience of creating eye contact when singing creates a reciprocal communication.

Those lovely musical coos develop into combinations of sounds that represent real objects (for example my son’s word for tractor was “dab-ba”!), before speech develops into that very first word, all with the help of our rhythmic conversations together!

experts believe that music is a key vehicle to early language development. Sally Goddard Blythe, a consultant in neurodevelopmental education and director of the ϱ Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology believes that singing traditional lullabies and nursery rhymes to babies and infants before they learn to speak, is “an essential precursor to later educational success and emotional wellbeing”. In her book “The Genius of Natural Childhood” she goes on to say that “song is a special type of speech. Lullabies, songs and rhymes of every culture carry the ‘signature’ melodies and inflections of a mother tongue, preparing a child’s ear, voice and brain for language.”

From birth our baby’s first communication is to howl or squeal as they communicate to us that they need something from us, and we respond with a comforting speech dialogue. As our baby grows so does their repertoire of sounds as they enjoy making airy cooing sounds which we often can’t help but respond to with “parentese”. Parentese is the rhythmic way in which we have a conversation with our little bundle, often changing our voice tone and pitch which many parents are unaware of using! The makeup and essence of parentese is of course musical.

Language and music both involve rhythm in their structure and music is a language in its own right. Both of these languages (speech & music) are made up of smaller parts such as syllables and beats and this correlation means that, arguably, music is an obvious natural way to actively encourage our child’s speech. Through my work I have experienced how music and ϵ can improve a child’s language skills, whether singing they are very young and still developing their speech, have a speech delay, or are learning English as a second language, and it is incredible to hear a child sing a word or even sentence for the first time. Finally, aside from all of the science, across all cultures we enjoy singing with our children because quite simply it is fun!
