You may have read in our Spring edition that we have split the old MK & Bucks magazine in two, to make content more relevant and provide a better service for the different areas of Buckinghamshire for both readers and our advertisers. New Owners Not only is this a new magazine, there are also new owners too! Myself (Steph) and Matt have for the last year run Toddle About Oxfordshire and have now taken on Toddle About South Buckinghamshire too. I was a VIP when I had my eldest son and also advertised the business I ran at the time so have experienced both sides. We now have two young sons and are enjoying learning the ropes producing two magazines. Snuggling up together with a book at bedtime is not only fun and bonding, but paves the way for becoming emotionally intelligent adults

how to put names to their feelings. Additionally, by associating with and relating to the characters in the story, your child will learn to empathise with others; an important tool in becoming an emotionally intelligent individual.

Reading with children at any time of day is beneficial. But in my professional and personal experience, a bedtime story is invaluable in creating healthy attachment and bonding between parent and child, paving the way for forming positive relationships all through life.

Such precious moments will leave your child feeling heard – learning that it is safe to express feelings, which in turn leads to healthy attachment and bonding with you as their parent. The ability to safely voice emotions is a valuable tool in times of stress and a skill that will be carried forward into adulthood, and ultimately into parenthood.

Adding reading to your bedtime routine also cultivates a positive habit that does not only help calm young minds at the end of a busy day, but will soon become a lifelong habit of approaching sleep in a calm and peaceful manner. Little did I know, when I started reading with my own children as babies, what a valuable investment I was making not only regarding these benefits, but also in my future relationship with my children. Snuggling up with a book at the end of the day when your child is tired and ready to go to sleep is a perfect time to gently explore your child’s feelings. Young children do not always know what they are feeling and how to name their emotions. A picture book with lovely illustrations is an ideal way to get a welcome glimpse into your child’s inner world by gently exploring his or her understanding of the story and characters. For example, you may ask, ‘I wonder how the bear felt when he was lost in the wood?’ or, ‘How do you think the bear will feel when he finds his house again?’ In this way, your child can safely explore his or her own feelings through the story and the characters in the book and learn, with your help, 6 July-Sept 2022 Toddle About South Bucks

I had anticipated that this bedtime ritual with my own children would slowly fizzle out by the time they started reading chapter books by themselves. However, this time together has become so valuable to us all that even now as teenagers, although not reading together anymore, my children still seek the closeness and safety of snuggling up in bed with me to talk about their day before drifting off to sleep. In short, reading a picture book together with your child is a feast for the senses which builds positive brain pathways, leads to healthy attachment and bonding and installs essential life skills. I am convinced that early childhood experiences, such as reading together at bedtime, are irreplaceable building blocks in forming positive relationships and in helping develop emotionally intelligent individuals with empathy for themselves and the world around them. Tie Dying is a fun activity you can enjoy with your little one. You can dye all sorts, like shirts, jumpers, socks – even shoes!

You will need:

• Fibre-reactive dye • Plain white cotton T-shirts • Soda ash • Rubber bands or strong string • Buckets and/or squeeze bottles (1 per colour)

• Plastic tablecloths • Rubber gloves and a dust mask • Old plastic bags or cling film

Instructions: 1. Gather your supplies and set up your work area. Prewash your garments with detergent.

2. Mix your dyes as package instructions. Pre-soak your garment in a soda ash solution, if necessary.

3. Fold or crumple your fabric to create the design. Secure the folds with rubber bands or string.

4. Apply the dye solution with squeeze bottles, sponges or paintbrushes. Or, dip the fabric in buckets of dye.

5. Wrap the garments in cling film or place them

in plastic bags. Let the dye set up for at least 6-8 hours, or preferably for 24 hours in a warm spot. 6. Rinse in cold water, and then unfold and rinse in lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Wash separately in the washing machine with detergent. SAFETY TIPS: Work outside, wear old clothes/apron & rubber gloves. See 10 fab Wear a dust mask when mixing soda ash or dye powders. Fruit Tarts Ingredients:

(For the pastry) • 84g plain flour, plus a little extra for dusting • 56g baking spread • 14g caster sugar • A few drops of water • 2 tsps jam mixed with 1 tsp water (For the filling / topping) • 85ml double cream • 1 dessert spoon lemon curd • Blueberries and raspberries (or your fruit of choice)

Equipment:

• Mixing bowl • Muffin or pie tin • Cooling rack • Rolling pin, fork & spoon • Pastry cutter or mug (8cm dia) • Pastry brush (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 190°/ 170° fan or gas mark 5.

2. In a large mixing bowl, rub the flour and butter together with your fingers until it resembles sand.

3. Add the sugar and a few drops of cold water and mix together with a fork or your hands until it forms a smooth dough. If too wet add more flour, if too crumbly add a drop of water.

4. Flour your work surface and roll the pastry out until 2mm thick.

5. Cut out your circles. Depending on the thickness of your pastry you should get 6-8 circles.

6. Prepare your baking tin by rubbing butter over the holes and then sprinkling flour in them.

7. Tip out any excess flour and then place your pastry in the holes.

8. Prick with a fork and then bake for 8 minutes, until they are beginning to turn light brown.

9. Allow them to cool and then brush with the jam mixture.

10. In a second small bowl, mix the cream and lemon curd until nicely combined. Share this between the pastry cases, and top with the fruit of your choice.

When my eldest daughter was 2 years old, she used to go to a little baby ballet class. It began at 9 and ended at 10 and, every week at 9:45 on the dot, she would take the star she had been holding whilst pretending to be the sugar plum fairy or whatever, and would hit another kid over the head with it. Sometimes she would simply smack them in the face, but one week she grabbed a whole fistful of another child’s cheek. The worst part was she often chose the same child, who was a very sweet and gentle little girl. It got to the point where I would start getting up to leave at 9:40 and would be internally dancing with joy if we got to 9:46 and she hadn’t hit anyone. She fooled me once by lasting until 9:59 - but she ended that ballet class by smacking two children at once whilst running to get her sticker. One time a mother of a child she had hit came up to me and suggested that “maybe it wasn’t normal and maybe I should consult a professional”. I mumbled embarrassedly that I was a “professional”. 14 July-Sept 2022 Toddle About South Bucks The

Looking back now, I wish I had said something more assertive, but the reality is that it’s embarrassing to be the mum of the child “that hits others kids”. So what did I do? At 9:43am I would take her outside and give her a snack. We would sit and have a minute together and I’d ask her if she wanted to go back in or was she done with dancing for today? This might sound like a basic and even non-sensical strategy to deal with hitting by offering a cut up apple and a biscuit but it worked. Children who hit, particularly those who are under 5, are often hitting because they don’t have the ability to articulate how they feel. They might be hungry, tired, frustrated or something else. What matters is the way we react to the hitting. If we’re too punitive, then we run the risk of overstimulating the child’s central nervous system though fear, which can cause them to no longer absorb information. But too lenient and the

child has no understanding of the boundaries of hitting, so the behaviour continues or, even worse, escalates to get a larger reaction. Children watch reactions like a hawk and if you give them one that they find intriguing, chances are they will repeat the behaviour. In real terms, if you begin screaming or berating your child for hitting, they might find this reaction amusing: mummy’s face looks funny and so does her voice. If the child hits out of frustration and you give in to this demand, they will more than likely do it again as they believe they have found a way to bend you to their will. If you are distracted and offer only a nonchalant, “Oh don’t do that,” they may well escalate the behaviour in order to actually get a reaction from you.

How to Stop Your Child Hitting

Remove the child from the situation. This is a clear signal that what they have done is not ok and we need to talk about it.

Come down to their level and say firmly, “We do not hit. Hitting hurts people.”

Return to the activity. Do this when the child is calmer, and only then.

Encourage the child to self-regulate. Younger children might need a cuddle to do this, or even a snack – likely, hitting was a display that they felt dysregulated and scared by something. If the child is older than 4, ask the child to breathe with you and hold their hand whilst they do it.

Acknowledge the friend they have hit, and either say sorry or think of something kind they can do for that friend. Whilst some psychologists do not advocate for “forced apologies”, I believe it is a good reinforcement of the message – regardless of the provocation, violence is not ok.

The mat is a good size - my 6-month-old was able to roll whilst comfortably staying on the mat. It has a lovely soft, velvety surface and is well-padded, making it a very comfortable area for babies to lie or sit There are toys hanging from the arches, which are stable and allow for babies to lean against them when exploring. The hanging toys include a baby-safe mirror, raffle, musical pull toy and squeaky Teddy. Younger babies will enjoy staring up to the mirror and listening to the music, while slightly older babies will be trying to reach and pull the toys. My daughter was able to pull the musical toy and this kept her busy for quite some time!

The play mat is in natural tones and colours and fits happily into the home. It has textures designed to encourage sensory play - my daughter spent ages exploring the textures with her hands and feet whilst lying on the play mat. Overall, this is a lovely play mat for babies. 7 Ways

to Help Your Child Cope with Change By Liat Hughes Joshi

Preschool children can find change especially difficult – they’re too little to understand what’s going on or to have any control over the bigger aspects of the situation. They might well not even be able to articulate their feelings. Whether it’s a family change such as the arrival of a new sibling, or moving house or school, here are some ways to help them cope:

When you know change is coming, get your little one used to the idea a short while in advance by talking about what’s going to happen and building familiarity with their new circumstances. Timing is important here, so don’t do this weeks before as that won’t be meaningful to them (the exception being pregnancy where they will notice your bump obviously!) If they’re moving home or nursery/ preschool, take them to see the new place, and point out some of the features of it they might like. If that’s not possible, show them photos and videos online.

Let them have some basic involvement in whatever is going on in relevant, age-appropriate ways. So if you’re moving house, can they choose something (minor and inexpensive) for their room? If they’re changing nursery or school, perhaps a new bag?

Keep to their usual routines as much as possible through the change – this stability will help them feel secure, but also sticking to regular eating and sleep times will ensure they don’t get grouchy through hunger or tiredness.

Give them a little leeway if they ‘play up’ behaviour-wise – they might be upset by whatever is going on. But don’t abandon all rules

too much or for too long. Again, those firm boundaries help your child feel secure. And definitely draw the line at any hitting out/ biting at you or others too – it’s fine to be upset or angry at some bad event but it’s never okay to take it out on other people physically.

Don’t make assumptions about how your child feels about the change – instead observe how they’re reacting and if they’re a little older listen to what they say about it. It might be quite different to how you or their sibling would have reacted at their age.

Offer extra cuddles and a little more attention. When there’s a lot going on, it can be tricky to spend time with your child but, whenever you can, make sure you find part of the day to give them your undivided attention, to cuddle and chat and help them feel like you’re there for them.

Look after yourself too – when times are tough it’s tempting to focus solely on helping your child but, if you’re to be in the best position to do that, you need to take care of you. Don’t feel guilty about this; perhaps find someone to look after your little one so you can offload on a friend or family member, or go for a walk to contemplate what’s going on.
