New Baby. New Year. New You? January is that month of the year when everyone turns their mind to weight loss, getting fit & talking about achieving new things. It seems every advert & magazine article is telling us how we should be, look, feel and how to do it….As a Dietitian the most frequently asked question I get asked in January is what’s the best way to lose weight….STOP! Think…what do YOU want? What is important to YOUR family at the moment? Research suggests 9 out of 10 people who start a diet in January have given up by day 12..why? Because goals were not planned. Time spent on goal setting is imperative to achieving them…How much do you want to lose? By when? How are you going to achieve it? As well as January diets I get really frustrated with the pressure on new Mums to lose the “baby weight”…weight loss shouldn’t be the first thing on your mind after having your baby, developing a bond, working out how your family functions as more than just you, how you can manage on significantly less sleep all come first.

New mums should focus on appropriate nutrition, this may result in desired weight loss but first and foremost should promote good health. Ensuring you drink sufficient caffeine free and sugar free fluids (regardless of breastfeeding or not), ensuring you eat regular meals, opting for nutritionally dense snacks if energy boosts in between meals are needed. Ensuring you include a mix of slow release carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats to support recovery from childbirth (natural or caesarean section), meeting vitamin and mineral requirements to support an effective immune system. Do not drastically reduce calorie intake in effort to shed the pounds, it could have a detrimental effect on your emotional health and physical wellbeing. Instead think about sustainable healthy eating habits.

A useful guide to

cloth Nappies Cloth nappies can seem really overwhelming before you start using them. Turns out, it’s really not that complex and once you get used to them it’s actually pretty simple! By Laura Smith

Nappy Types: There are various types of cloth

Cost: The initial outlay is of course more expensive

nappies on the market, from the traditional Terry squares or prefolded muslins to shaped nappies, pocket nappies and simple, all-in-one nappies. They can come in different sizes as your child gets bigger or a single ‘birth to potty’ size which can be adjusted to make the nappy bigger or smaller. You can also choose velcro or poppers depending on the brand. Everyone has different preferences so, if you’re unsure, we recommend that you contact your local cloth nappy library to borrow a kit and see what works for you.

than a few packs of disposables, but the overall cost of cloth nappies has been proven to be cheaper over time (unless of course you become addicted to the cute prints and want all the new releases!) You can keep costs down by buying budget nappies (there are some with great reviews) and by buying pre-loved. Reusable wipes are also a brilliant money saver and they clean so much better than disposables!

Being Out and About/Childcare: We both use our

nappy pods which can store 4/5 cloth nappies, wipes, wet bag for dirty nappies and a change of clothes! Put dirty nappies in the wet bag and sort out when you get home. Have a chat to your childcare providers - lots of nurseries and childminders have experience using cloth nappies and are more than happy to accept them. Don’t forget: if you use just one cloth nappy each day, you will send about 900 fewer nappies to landfill - so it doesn’t have to be all or nothing!

Washing: Cloth nappies require more washing -

we can’t deny that - but once you get into the swing of things, it’s not difficult and you’ll soon love the look of those cute little nappies hanging on the line. Essentially, there are two steps to the washing process: first you need to do some kind of rinse or quick wash. Then a long wash at either 40 or 60 degrees with non-bio washing powder (no fabric conditioner) and that’s it! You can store them in a nappy bin or wet bag until wash day (Usually every 3 days). Poo… breastfed poo can get put into the washing machine as its water soluble. Formula fed babies or babies that are having solid foods will need to have poo flushed down the toilet first. You can get reusable or flushable nappy liners which protect the nappy and make discarding of poo easier.

EASTER EGG CAKE POPS A delicious alternative Easter treat that is fun to make and even better to eat! Ingredients:

Method:

• 75g margarine • Whisk the margarine and sugar together • 75g caster sugar until creamy • 75g self-raising flour • Add in the eggs • 1 egg and whisk • 1½ tbsps. milk • Fold in the flour • ½ tsp vanilla essence • Add the milk and • Tub of vanilla frosting mix together • 100g bar milk chocolate • Pour into 6 cupcake • 100g bar white chocolate cases and bake for 20 minutes at gas mark 4 • When cool, crumble the cupcakes together • Add enough frosting to the crumbs to make it mouldable • Mould into egg shapes and chill in the fridge for ½ hour

• Coat with melted chocolate • Leave to set in the fridge • Drizzle on melted chocolate and add sprinkles to decorate • Enjoy!

Mother’s Day Craft: Easy Tape Painting

There is so much potential with tape art and it is lots of fun! Instructions: 1. Prepare all your materials. 2. Decide on your design and cut off strips of masking tape. 3. Press the masking tape down onto the canvas/paper in the pattern or image required, taking care that the edges are firmly stuck down. This will prevent paint from seeping under the edges.

Materials: • Canvas or stiff card • Masking tape

4. Paint over the entire canvas, including the tape design, as desired. 5. If you would like to add glitter add this whilst the paint is still slightly wet.

6. Once finished, you can lift off the tape straight away or you can let the paint dry • Paint (not too watery) first (we found grabbing the masking • Paint brushes tape edges with tweezers helped). • Sharpies/felt tips 7. I Had a “Purple Crier” Here’s what I did By Dr Alison McClymont

Purple Crying as defined on the NHS website: P – Peak crying: Your baby might cry more

each week - the most in the second month, then less in months three to five.

U – Unexpected: Crying can come and go and you don’t know why

R – Resists soothing: your baby might

not stop crying no matter what you try.

P – Pain-like face: a crying baby might look like they are in pain, even when they are not.

L – Long lasting: crying can last as long as five hours a day or more.

E – Evening: your baby might cry more in the late afternoon and evening.

“All babies cry.” “Have you tried doing x/y/z?” “You should let her self-soothe.” “Its gas.” “It’s reflux.” I heard it all and I tried it all. I spent hours researching different ways to hold babies, different massage techniques, cranial osteopathy, homeopathy, changing my diet, changing feeding times, changing feeding positions, infacol, colief, chamomile oil, changing sleep positions, getting elevated sleep pillow

things, playing white noise, playing music, changing bedroom temperatures, sleeping in car seats, not sleeping in car seats and endless walking up and down stairs. I even tried a strange practice of stepping up and down off a coffee table… there was not one thing I wouldn’t try. But nothing worked - she still cried.

What Purple Crying looked like for me For the first 5-6 months of my eldest child’s life, she cried unrelentingly for up to 5 hours at a time. The mornings were usually the worst and the only thing that stopped her was near-constant breastfeeding on my part, and this I did. I had many people tell me that I should “feed on a schedule”, but breastfeeding was the only thing that offered me some mental space, and I did it happily - my daughter seemed to relax only when she was on the breast. I tried a dummy for a day, but she refused and in my newmother-sleep-deprived state I was so overwhelmed by different messages, I latched on strongly to the idea that a dummy was not the solution. I remember feeling confused, exhausted, emotionally battered and completely out of my body. I went to a play date with some other new mums and watched in astonishment as one mother just lay her baby down to sleep without any crying whatsoever or any convoluted routine of breastfeeding/bouncing/commando rolling away from the cot. “Is she just going to sleep like that?!” I asked, as though I was witnessing some kind of Jan-Mar 2022 Toddle About Suffolk 23

meant my daughter did too - if nothing else, it broke up our routine and offered us both some needed mental relief. Daily social connection (preferably face-to-face) did the same. From a purely practical standpoint I found that walking up and down stairs, or on and off a low surface, for some reason stopped the crying (apparently it aids in moving gas, but whatever it was it worked for me). I also found that daily massages helped - they didn’t stop my daughters crying, but they were at least a well-intentioned way for us to connect. It was the same with daily warm baths.

My reflections and advice

When I look back, I wonder if there was anything I would have done differently and there are a few things… I think I wouldn’t listen to quite so many judgmental messages around dummy use, and I definitely wouldn’t be so concerned with other people’s views around what I am and am not doing. But mostly, I wouldn’t change anything. I did the best I could and followed the instincts my body gave me.

I spent the remaining two hours of the playdate bouncing my daughter on my hip and pacing the living room, whilst trying not to spill my cup of tea. I realised quite early on in this journey that nothing distresses other people quite so much as a crying baby, and nothing is more stressful to a mother trying to deal with a crying baby, than other people’s distress. I cannot count the times I left cafes, shops, play spaces and baby classes due to my embarrassment at having a baby whom I couldn’t get to stop crying. I remember distinctly holding my daughter in a baby carrier in a supermarket, whilst she was crying, and a woman demanding angrily, “Can’t you do something about that”? To which I hurriedly tried to breastfeed whilst she was in the carrier (a talent that I quickly developed!) only to be confronted by a snappy, “Well you can’t do that in here, there’s a toilet if you need to do that”. Turns out nothing distresses some people quite so much as a breastfeeding-in-public mother, with a crying baby…

If you are the parent of a “purple crier” this, above all things, is my best advice: YOU are the expert of your child and YOU know what is best for your child. Stand strong in that stance and take time to repeat to yourself, “I am doing a good job, and every day I am learning to be a better mother”. When my daughter was 6 months old, I was introduced to a new mother who was also struggling with Purple Crying and I offered to go and meet her to offer some support. When we met, she marveled at my daughter playing happily on the mat, seemingly unable to imagine that THIS was the girl I had told her used to cry for hours and hours at a time. But I assured her it was, and that she too would find that this difficult phase she was going through would not endure forever.

How I Got Through It

I went through a time thinking “this will never end” and I would read stories of people who only found respite after 12 months and I wondered how I would get there, but - mother to mother - I assure you with love and strength that “this too will pass”. You got this Mama.

There were a few things that really helped me through that difficult and sometimes dark period. I set myself three goals every day: the first was to get dressed, the second to get out of the house and the third to socially connect with others. These goals may sound small but when you are the parent of a “purple crier”, getting out of the house can feel like the last place you want to be. Yet I found that, sometimes, just stepping outdoors helped to calm my daughter and, if not, the crying at least seemed a little less cacophonous in the open air. I also found that getting out meant I had other tasks on which to focus and sometimes this 24 Jan-Mar 2022 Toddle About
