Toddle About Suffolk, our new quarterly magazine produced by parents for parents with babies, toddlers and preschoolers.

I know from experience how hard it can be to find things to do with your little ones when you are new to the area or a first-time parent. Toddle About has always been a useful guide and my go-to bible in the past when living in the Midlands. We moved to Suffolk just over a year ago and that's when the idea of launching Toddle About Suffolk was born. What a great season it is to launch this magazine. Who doesn't love the events leading up to Christmas. Don't let the short and cold days keep you indoors this winter - in this issue you will find plenty going on for the little ones to enjoy! So don't forget to wrap up warm! Check out What's New (p.4-6), our Christmas/Halloween Events Section (p. 7-8) and look out for any groups and classes in the Daily Activity Planner (p.26-43). You will find plenty more inspiration for things to do with the children throughout the magazine.

Halloween
Throw a devilishly fun Halloween party for your little ones this year with some of these fantastic ideas from Carole Middleton and our friends at partypieces.co.uk.
FREAKY FANCY DRESS Your little one may not be ready to trick-or-treat on their own, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be part of the Halloween fun. Costumes come in all shapes and sizes and there are even ones for the smallest of babies. Spidery temporary tattoos are also hugely popular. If you have a few children to entertain try setting up some trick or treat ‘scary stations’ around the house and garden for them to enjoy. Simply hide an assortment of toys and treats along the way.
o
Sausage Mummies Ingredients: Flour to sprinkle 12 sausages 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 x pack of ready rolled puff pastry Soft cheese and chopped black olives, to decorate 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas mark 6. 2. Lightly flour your surface and roll out the pastry to approx. 0.5cm thick. 3. Cut the pastry into long, thin strips approx. 0.5cm wide. 4. Wrap the pastry strips around each sausage to create the mummy effect. You’ll need 1-2 strips of pastry per sausage. 5. Brush with the beaten egg and place on a lined baking tray. 6. Bake in the oven for 18-20 minutes – until the sausage is cooked through and the pastry is puffed and golden. 7. Once cooled, add eyes to your mummy sausages with blobs of cream cheese and small pieces of black olives.
Our particular favourite is to fill buckets with squidgy jelly eyes, slippery sweet snakes plus a good handful of plastic spiders and creepy crawlies - eek! You will no doubt get some bogeymen visitors to your house too, and kids love the opportunity to scare these unsuspecting ghouls. Decorate your front door to let your neighbourhood know you welcome trick or treaters. Little ones will love answering the door to all sorts of crazy creatures and handing out the treats.
DECORATING PUMPKINS
p
Carving pumpkins is one of the joys of Halloween, but it can be quite difficult to involve small fingers, especially when the kitchen knives come out! These painted pumpkins are really effective, all you need is some white acrylic paint (or glow-in-the-dark paint for extra effect) and a range of colourful sharpies to add your designs with.
TABLE DECORATIONS What Halloween party would be complete without a matching themed tablecloth, party plates and cups? And for a truely gruesome get-together a chilling centrepiece is a must-have for your party table. These ghostly balloons look fantastic filled with helium bobbing along the centre of the table or floating off the backs of chairs.
You can find all these spooktacular Halloween products, and many more, by visiting Party Pieces online at www.partypieces.co.uk or call 01635 201 844. And for more inspiration take a look at blog.partypieces.co.uk it’s packed full of ideas to make your Halloween evening spine-chillingly good! Oct-Dec Oct-Dec 2018 Toddle About Suffolk 9

EAR PIERCING FOR
Babies and Toddlers... SHOULD IT BE BANNED?
By Laura Chesmer from www.autumnsmummyblog.com
Whether you pierce your baby or toddler’s ears is a personal choice that most parents have strong opinions about. The argument for banning it ignites online and in the media every once in a while, and petitions for making it illegal it garner thousands of signatures. Some people even claim it’s a form of child abuse. Why do people pierce their baby’s ears?
GET TING IT OVER AND DONE WITH Getting a piercing is painful, so some parents decide to pierce their daughter’s ears as a baby to get it out of the way. After all, the vast majority of women have their ears pierced. In getting it done before they’re really aware of what is going on, it gets it out of the way and they probably won’t remember the pain. It may also be easier in some ways for parents to ensure that the fresh piercings are properly looked after than when the child is older.
C U LT U R A L E X P E C TAT I O N S A N D G E N D E R REINFORCEMENT In many parts of the world, it is a cultural expectation that a baby girl should have her ears pierced. In fact, to this day some hospitals in Spain carry out ear piercing within hours of a girl being born. In such places, even if a girl is dressed in obviously feminine clothing, she may be continually mistaken for a boy due to her unpierced ear lobes. There is also the possibility that this may trigger bullying when the child reaches school age as they are likely to be the odd one out.
Why are people against piercing ears so young? B A B I E S D O N ’ T U N D E R S TA N D W H AT ’ S HAPPENING As they’re so little and don’t understand what’s going on, babies and toddlers can’t agree to having their ears pierced. One moment they’re on your lap happy and gurgling and the next they’re in pain. There was actually a video that went viral around this time last year that showed just that, which made for upsetting viewing. (See toddle.club/earpiercing) T H E Y M I G H T N OT WA N T E A R P I E R C I N G S As babies don’t understand what’s going on and can’t speak, they can’t tell you that they don’t want ear piercings. They might grow up to not want any piercings and then they’ll be left with scars on their ear lobes when they stop wearing them. There’s also a small chance that they could grow up with gender dysphoria. If they feel like they’re supposed to be male and decide to change to that gender, those scars could be a painful reminder of a time when they were a girl.
TRADITION Of course, part of these cultural expectations are formed by tradition. If your grandmother had your mother’s ears pierced as a baby, your mother had yours pierced under 6 months and it was the same for the rest of your family, it would seem quite normal to you. If there is a tradition such as this within the family, you would be more likely to follow it and also get your baby’s ears pierced. 16 Oct-Dec 2018 Toddle About
Many parents, myself included, think it should be the child’s choice to have their ears pierced. The

IT ’S SELFISH Some people think it’s selfish to pierce a child’s ears so young as it is putting them through unnecessary pain in order for their daughter to have pretty ears, as though they are some kind of fashion accessory. Some even go as far as calling it child abuse as it is physically harming them and causing them distress, while other types of physically harming children are illegal. While it is annoying to have to correct people who call your daughter a boy, is it worth putting your child through pain to show they’re a girl? I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s selfish - however, I wouldn’t personally do it. Even after seeing my daughter in immense pain after open surgery at 5 weeks old, I still find it difficult when she cries in pain for far less serious reasons. She recently cut her cheek badly and we had to go to A&E for it to be glued. Seeing her cry while the nurses cleaned the wound and glued it was awful and I’d never put her through any kind of pain that I didn’t need to.
S O… I S I T A B U S E ?
?
e
People who want to make ear piercing illegal are in the minority however - whether they agree with piercing babies’ ears or not, most people believe that it shouldn’t be illegal. After all, there are already so many rules on how we raise our children, this would be yet another way of restricting parents. It is also worth pointing out at this stage that male circumcision is perfectly legal, but is painful and the child has no choice. It goes without saying that circumcision carries far bigger implications than ear piercing, yet it never seems to attract the same attention as ear piercing babies.
e
s
Others believe there should be an age restriction applied, making it illegal to pierce the ears of children under a certain age. Purely from a practical point of view, this would be difficult to put into practice however as children don’t have photo ID to prove their age. A birth certificate could be taken along, but it would be easy to borrow the birth certificate of a sibling or friend’s child if you’re insistent on having your child’s ears pierced below the legal age. Such a law might even drive parents to pierce their children’s ears at home, which could also be very risky as they may not use the proper equipment or sterilise things correctly.
So, should it be illegal? From time to time there is a surge of interest in this debate. Tens of thousands of people have signed petitions calling for it to be illegal to pierce a baby or toddler’s ears. Some even extend their views to it being banned for any child. This is for a variety of reasons, but the most common explanations are that the child isn’t old enough to understand the ramifications of piercings, or that they are too young to look after their piercings properly, putting them at risk of infection.
Some say that piercing such a young child’s ears is child abuse, however, there are far worse things that happen which make this debate pale in comparison. Calling it child abuse seems too harsh a label to me – and calling it such would potentially make real child abuse seem less significant. Ear piercing isn’t generally done maliciously, so it probably shouldn’t be considered as abuse.
U LT I M AT E LY, I T ’ S YO U R D E C I S I O N Whether you want to pierce your daughter’s ears or not, it isn’t currently illegal. As such, it is your choice and you know the decision that you think is right for you and your child. Just make sure that you choose a reputable piercer in a clean, sterile environment and look after your child’s ears with care.

I WANT TO RETURN TO WORK -
where do I start? TAKE SOME SIMPLE STEPS TO GE T BACK INTO WORK
Written by Caroline Cotterell, Managing Director at HR Solutions Team Ltd
If you’ve taken a break from your career and are looking to get back to work, it can be hard to know what you need to do, what you might have missed and even where to look.
There are many reasons why people choose to take some time away from their careers. Looking after children is perhaps the most obvious or caring for ageing parents is something that’s on the increase.
3. Refresh Your Skills and Knowledge
The good news is, none of these should hold you back; with a bit of planning and preparation, you’ll be workplace ready before you know it. Here are some of the key things you should think about.
Get yourself back up-to-speed on your old industry (or learn about a new one) by completing professional courses through industry associations, attending workshops/seminars, signing up to relevant newsletters and meeting ex-colleagues. Stop worrying about your IT skills – take a course before you get back to work.
1. Be Clear About Your Career Goals
4. Be Strategic in your Job Search
Start with clarifying your motivations to go back to work. Do you want to be a good role model for your children; do you want the status of a high-powered job; do you want or need to earn your own money? Returning to work after a career break is a great opportunity to consider what you really want to do, so think about what makes work enjoyable and fulfilling for you. If you are looking for flexibility to fit with your family life, think of all the different forms this could take rather than thinking part-time work is the only option.
2. Boost Your Confidence Your self-confidence usually gets a knock during a long career break. Remind yourself of your strengths and achievements, before and during your break. Recognise and tackle your fears and doubts about returning to work. Remember that confidence comes from doing not thinking, so look for practical opportunities to regain your professional self, such as project work, temping or strategic volunteering if you’ve had a long break.
Don’t fall into the trap of endlessly trawling online job boards looking for the right job and firing off scattergun CVs. If you’re looking for flexible work, look at social media, this is becoming a growing area for recruitment.
5. Grow and Use Your Network Networking isn’t about approaching people and asking for a job. Networking is about making contact with people and is part of life – you do it at the school gates and in your local communities all the time. Take time to prepare a convincing and credible professional introduction first.
6. Hone Your CV It’s likely that your CV needs updating, in terms of format and content. The point of a CV is to show others what you are capable of. So, highlight the headlines of your life, focusing on what you achieved in your roles not on your responsibilities.
7. Prepare for Interviews Read books and articles, research the organisation and most importantly, practise. Don’t undersell yourself, this is not the time to be modest; take credit for your achievements and let your prospective employer see the best of you.

How to stop poor posture creating problems for you and your children down the road If your posture is slumped with your shoulders rolled forward, your head will follow, also going forward. This can cause extra strain on your spine and tension on your spinal cord which could lead to headaches, neck, arm and back ache, difficulty concentrating, sitting still and poor sleep just to list a few symptoms. As Chiropractors, we work to reduce the effects these strains have on the spine to keep you moving as well as you can and symptom free.
BUT WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT We are leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles from prolonged sitting and use of technology, causing a general trend of slumping, forward stooped posture and “text-neck”, especially in children. As a result, parents are seeing the need to take positive action with their children to promote better posture and back health as well as developing good habits for adulthood. The good news is that a few simple steps can help reduce the effects of poor posture on your spine, improving your overall back health:
Get moving • The fitter children are, the more their backs can withstand periods of sitting still. Try weekend family walks and encourage cycling or walking instead of chauffeuring them around! • Good sensible footwear can be a big help. I recommend soft-soled shoes that are supportive and have a good grip.
COMPUTER SENSE • Using a laptop or tablet away from a desk really encourages poor posture, so it’s best to limit time spent in this way. It’s so much better to sit at a desk - sitting with arms relaxed and resting on the desk when typing will give some much needed support. The top of the screen should be level with the eyebrows, you can put the monitor on a book or ream of paper to achieve this. The desk chair should be tilted slightly forward, allowing for the knees to be lower than the hips. Feet should always be flat on the floor. • Don’t sit still for too long. Children should be encouraged to take a break every 20 minutes or so and stretch their arms, shrug their shoulders and move their fingers around - this helps to keep the muscles more relaxed.
SLEEPING • Mattresses do wear out and stop giving the support they did when new. Most mattresses will need replacing after 7-10 years. • When buying a mattress, take your child with you to try them out. You want to make sure that their spine is parallel to the mattress and not sagging (mattress too soft) or bowing (mattress too hard). Pay attention to their pillow too, as this is key to maintaining the neutral spine position. Finally, lead by example! Maintaining good posture and promoting good back health is something that everyone should be doing, adults and children alike. If parents make it a priority, it’s easier for their children to see the relevance.

5 Top Tips For
SUCCESSFUL DOG & BABY/ TODDLER INTERACTIONS By Gemma Abbott – Expert & Educator in Dog & Baby and Dog & Toddler Dynamics
We would all love for our little ones and canine family members to have a great bond and relationship but the reality is sometimes miscommunications can happen between even the best dogs and little ones. Here are some top tips to set all family members (human and canine) up for success!
1. Learn About Canine Communication Becoming familiar with and understanding how dogs communicate via body language will enable you to read, recognise and respond to them to help keep them comfortable. Subtle signs of stress that dogs display include lip-licking, yawning, turning away, sudden sniffing or scratching, showing the whites of the eyes (whale eye/half moon eye) amongst others.
2. Active Supervision We all know to Supervise right?! But do we know exactly how we should be supervising effectively to keep everyone safe and any interactions within comfort levels of both the dog and baby/ toddler. Family Paws Parent Education offer a great description of the ‘5 Types of Supervision’. ‘Active Supervision’ is full awake present supervision focusing on your little one and dog and any interactions that may take place between them, as an adult try to remain in between your dog and little one and keep excitement levels low.
3. Baby/Toddler Free Time When Active Supervision is not possible it is best to give the dog some child-free time and space (ProActive Supervision). This can be achieved by setting the dog up in a ‘Success Station’, a designated area that they are limited to so they have no option but to succeed. This may be in putting the dog in another room behind a dog gate or in a crate with a tasty treat/chew to keep them busy. It is also possible to set up ‘Success Stations’ for your little one as opposed to your dog, for example putting your little one in a travel cot, play pen or use of a room divider.

Dog and Toddler Safety
4. Parent Guided Interactions Left to their own devices it is likely that our little ones will interact with dogs in a way that is ‘normal’ to the child but the human way, not the dog way. Dogs can feel uncomfortable with many natural human interactions such as hugging and kissing so these types of interactions should be avoided. It is up to us as parents to guide interactions and to teach our little ones what we would like to them to do by showing and demonstrating rather than telling and explaining. It is also our job to teach our dogs what we would like them to do and how we would like them to behave in different circumstances with our little ones. Dogs should be invited over for any type of interaction so they have the choice to ‘Opt-Out’ should they not wish to take part (this choice should be respected) and at any point during interaction taking place the dog should always be able to choose to leave.
DO use a gate to create a “success station” for your dog
Don’t allow access to dog's food, toys or treats
DO plan parent guided games
DON'T allow toddler and dog to play alone at anytime
DO be proactive and set up a “success station”
DON'T passively supervise your dog and toddler
DO invite dog over to you and your toddler
DON'T allow toddler to approach your dog
DO put dog in bedroom or crate while parent is away
DON'T expect babysitter to watch both toddler and dog
familypaws.com
1-877-247-3407
5. Inclusion WITHOUT Contact Inclusion and interactions with your dog in daily life with your little one does not need to encourage or promote physical touch. If anything the absence of physical contact can promote an even stronger bond between them as comfort levels are less likely to be breached. Activities like reading a book with your little one on your lap and your dog relaxing nearby; your little one could sing a song to your dog or blow them a kiss. The two of them could engage in what is referred to as ‘Parallel Play’ whereby your dog is engaging in one activity and your little one in another with you as a parent in between.
Mutual respect in relationships, daily positive encounters and associations, quality of time rather than quantity of time that your little ones spend together with your dog are all important for building bonds and a great relationship between them.

EASY TOILET
TRAINING By Lorraine Thomas
Every toddler will eventually get the hang of using the toilet, but be prepared – toilet training is a messy business. Give it a go when you have got the time, patience and energy. The more positive and relaxed you are, the easier it will be. Is Your Toddler Ready?
Consistency
There is no ‘right’ age to start toilet training. Every toddler is different. Some will get the hang of it much earlier than others. Boys often take longer than girls. In general, most children are aged between two and three when they start. Don’t feel under pressure to start because other parents are doing it. Go with your gut instinct. Look out for the signs; these include showing interest in the toilet, telling you they want a wee or poo or pulling off nappies.
Consistency is key, as it is for much of toddler training, so it’s important to sit your toddler on the potty or toilet at regular intervals. Young children don’t like sitting for long so help them by chatting or reading a story. The toilet can frighten some toddlers because of the noise. If you encounter this, flush after your toddler has left the bathroom when you first start training.
You both need to be on top form to make toilet training work, so don’t start when they are unwell or tired. Make sure training does not coincide with a change in your toddler’s daily routine, such as change of childcare.
Training during summer months is is Training during summer months helpful because youyou cancan let let your little helpful because your little oneone runrun around without a nappy on.on. around without a nappy
Preparing Decide whether you are going to use a potty or would rather attach a training seat to your toilet. Sharing a fun book about using the potty provides a good opportunity to talk to your toddler, so order one in advance. Take your toddler with you when you go to the toilet and show them how it is done so they know the deal before you ask them to have a go. Let them choose a new pair of pants to wear. The more involved they feel, the better.
Keep your approach low-key. If you take it in your stride – they will learn to do so too. Adopt a favourite song for your toddler to listen to when on the toilet or give them a book to look at. Toilet sticker charts in the bathroom can work wonders. Praise effort and attitude more than the result! Always be consistent and make sure other carers are using the same approach.
Accidents will happen It will take time. Some toddlers take weeks, others months, and bladder control usually comes after bowel control. It is also perfectly normal to be dry during the day, but not at night. Accidents are inevitable. Some toddlers are fine at home, but unable to use the toilet when out. Make sure part of your routine is portable e.g. singing the same song will help. Remember to stay calm and positive - this is all new to your toddler, so it’s important you are calm as this will rub off on them. And don’t worry about it – they’ll get there sooner or later!
