BABYLOSS Baby Loss – We know it’s not easy, but we need to talk about it…Sadly in the UK too many babies are still lost to miscarriage, stillbirth and in the neonatal period. By raising awareness, education and support, The Ipswich Baby Bereavement Group hope to help reduce the loss rate. Baby Loss Awareness Week is held every year between 9th-15th October. The support a family receives after such a tragic, life changing event can be pivotal to their journey through the grief. For over 12 years, The Ipswich Baby Bereavement Group has supported families during and after the loss of a baby, and strives to continually improve support services and resources available locally in Suffolk. The groups meet to provide friendship and understanding in an informal atmosphere, which encourages open and honest conversation, sharing
experiences and the day to day coping mechanisms of grief. All are welcome, whenever the loss. This is especially relevant around landmark dates in the year. The group ensures confidentiality and the opportunity to talk openly about their baby, even when friends and family have stopped. Through fundraising at various events every year, some of the resources the group provide include, memory making opportunities, staff training and hopefully soon, short breaks away. In 2016, the group commissioned The Tree of Remembrance which is made of recycled metal. Each leaf is engraved with the name, date of birth and a loving message - each leaf is a small but significant gesture to each family to honour their baby’s life.
Ipswich Baby Bereavement & Early Pregnancy Loss Support Groups The Baby Bereavement Group hold 2 support groups each month. The Baby Bereavement Group
The Early Pregnancy Loss Group
held on the last Tuesday of each month and supports families who have suffered a stillbirth or neonatal loss.
held on the last Wednesday of each month and supports families who have suffered a loss or losses during early pregnancy.
Due to the sensitive nature of the discussions which take place at the groups it is requested that babies and children do not attend.
Both groups meet in the Ambulance Discharge Lounge at Ipswich Hospital, Heath Road, IP4 5PD, between 7-9pm.
There is no need to book, you can just turn up. Anyone feeling anxious about attending either group can drop us a message and we can arrange to meet you just before the meeting. All discussions will remain confidential.

HOW TO HELP A CHILD COPE WHEN THEIR PARENTS DIVORCE CAS E ST UDY
When parents separate and divorce, children experience this loss and change as a bereavement. Losing the constancy of the family home unit makes them mourn and long for it to be reconstituted because, as author Brené Brown says, “We are hardwired to connect with others, it’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives, and without it there is suffering. While it’s possible to maintain a connection throughout divorce, children need help to process the separation.”
Alice, aged 8, talks about what it felt like when her parents divorced Alice started having play therapy after her Mum could no longer cope with Alice’s angry meltdowns, following her divorce from Alice’s Dad.
I’ve treated many children of divorced parents in my practice, and the one thing they have in common is a struggle to accept the loss of the family unit. While there may be good custody arrangements in place, the child still has to learn how to manage the transitions each time they leave one home to stay at the other. These are big losses for them to cope with emotionally. What complicates this loss for children is when parents fight about custody arrangements. Children like clear boundaries and routines, and when these are disrupted by controlling adult behaviours, the children are the ones who suffer the most because they usually don’t have a place to express their feelings about losing their family unit. It is important to give children tools to help them process these losses. 14 Oct-Dec 2019 Toddle About

“I used to hear Mum and Dad arguing, and I used to yell at them to stop, but they never listened to me, and carried on. I ran up to my room and stayed there until they stopped,” she said. “All I wanted was for them to agree and stop arguing with each other. I hated saying goodbye to my Dad at the end of our weekends together. Mum was never nice to him, and I felt sorry for him,” she said. “I felt so upset, no one was listening to me.” In my practice, children of divorced parents respond well to play therapy because they have access to a safe space where they can play out their worries with a third person. The third person is important to them because they often can’t tell their parents how they are feeling as they are anxious about upsetting them; generally, they believe it is their fault that their parents have divorced. icon tells you which advertisers have a voucher in the centre pages
After 12 weekly sessions of play therapy, Alice had expressed some of her anger and distress, and learned how to tell her parents what she needed from them. I facilitated several family sessions, which enabled everyone to understand the importance of listening and reflecting. Over half of couples divorcing in the UK in 2007 had at least one child aged under 16. This meant that there were over 110,000 children who were aged under 16 when their parents divorced, and 20% of these children were under five years old. However, many more children go through parental separation each year that are not included in figures like this, as their parents were not married (The Royal College of Psychiatrists). When parents decide to live apart, the level of upset the child feels can vary depending on how their parents separated, the age of the child, how much they understand and the support they get from parents, family and friends. In children up to the age of nine, their world is a dependent one, in which they rely on parents to meet their physical, psychological and emotional needs. So when parents separate and divorce, a child may feel: • A sense of loss – a child loses their home and way of life. • Afraid of being left alone – if one parent leaves, perhaps the other parent will too. • Angry at one or both parents. • Anxious about having caused the parental separation; guilty. • Rejected and insecure. • Torn between both parents; disloyal. These feelings can be made worse by the fact that many children have to leave their family home, live somewhere else and sometimes change schools. Most families separating will face some financial hardship, even if they did not experience money difficulties before. This can bring loss in the form of a child being unable to continue their extracurricular activities, and these changes can cause emotional stress for the parent and child, therefore impacting their relationship. Even if the parental relationship had been tense or violent, children may still have mixed feelings about their parents’ separation. The children I have seen in my practice have all held onto a wish that their parents would get back together, restoring the family unit.
Emotional and behavioural problems Children can become insecure when their parents separate because the separation may trigger how they express their attachment. If a child has an insecure attachment style, it is likely that their behaviour will reflect that insecurity. Seeing their parents separate through divorce may cause children to regress to a younger age. A parent may, therefore, see bedwetting, clinginess, nightmares, worries and general disobedience. Some of these behaviours may also show up at school and can be distressing for the child who is now ‘standing out’ in the classroom, and may feel like they are losing their dignity and privacy. This type of behaviour can happen before or after visits to the parent who is living apart from the family. These are red flags and may mean parents need to offer additional emotional and practical support at home.
How to help your child through a divorce • Routine. The loss of a routine can quickly destabilise a child’s emotional equilibrium, making them feel insecure. Maintaining a regular routine helps a child cope with increased anxiety and change. • Acceptance. A child’s age and developmental level can affect how he or she understands loss, and a child’s grief looks different from an adult’s. Children do not always cry or immediately show emotion but this does not mean they are not deeply affected by the loss. • Keep it real. Be open and honest about what happened. Doing so lets a child know that it is not taboo to talk about painful feelings. • Rituals. Invite children to create new rituals as well as maintain established and cherished ones. If they are living in two homes, this will help them settle and accept change. • Signposts. Increased anxiety can manifest itself as loss of appetite, loss of sleep or lack of interest in things such as playing games or attending school. It is important not to focus on the behaviour (as doing so may only make it worse) but, instead, help them acknowledge the feelings that are driving their behaviour. • Story. If talking directly about the loss is difficult for the child, reading a story can help them access their feelings through character and metaphor because it makes them feel safe while they express their grief.

PINKY & PUG: THE
Fourth
TRIMESTER,
Second TIME AROUND Second baby? No problem, we all know what we’re doing now, right?! A lot of advice is thrown at first time mums – and to be honest, a lot of it isn’t helpful. In fact some of it is downright awful, and it makes many of us feel like we’re failing when we’re just trying our best to stay afloat. Thankfully society seems to think that you must know what you’re doing second time around. But however you feel going into round two, it probably won’t match what you’re imagining, or even how it was last time.
• As Pinky found: I’m not sure I had even heard about the fourth trimester when my first was born, but I’d spent my life wishing for a baby and all I wanted to do was to sit and cuddle him now that he’d finally arrived. I hadn’t carried this baby for 9 months just to plonk him screaming in a cot and put the washing on! This was my time to embrace all things baby, and man was I going to embrace it! Second time around I had it sussed – or so I thought. I’d get a sling, I’d breastfeed while I snuggled up to my toddler and binge watch Peppa Pig while eating jammy dodgers. But it was just so much harder than I expected. It wasn’t even the tiny baby that caused the issue, it was my strong-willed toddler and the logistics of sorting out a tiny baby while dealing with everything he needed from me. It was enough to bring me to my knees. I found myself staring at myself in the mirror thinking, ‘Something has to change, I can’t do this anymore, it’s too damned hard!’
• Meanwhile, across town, Pug was having the opposite experience: When I was pregnant with my first baby, I read about the fourth trimester. I’m a child-psychotherapist, so taking it slowly with my baby snuggled into me made sense .... then he arrived, and I buckled under overwhelming anxiety. I gave into relentless 2am googling and listening to the advice everyone so freely gave. ‘Put him down,’ they said, ‘You’ll make a rod for your own back’. And I believed them. The first twelve weeks of motherhood were hard. When I had my second baby everything changed. He was 8 weeks premature. It was a hard time, but I sat tight and dug deep. I was in awe. Those first-time anxieties didn’t reappear – I knew what I was doing, and I trusted myself! The fourth trimester second time around was an utter joy. I didn’t bother to put my baby down. We cuddled and swayed, and l embraced the sling. It wasn’t peaceful and tranquil like I’d naively assumed. It was loud and chaotic, but we were connected and I loved it. You can’t plan it, you can’t know how it will go, but just do your best for YOU and YOUR little family. We all struggle, but ultimately we all succeed in our own way too. If you want our top survival tips, they would be:
• Buy a sling - how else do you hold the baby, cook, and run after the toddler who needs his bottom wiped?! Yep, sorry, that’s your life now!
• Don’t feel guilty about toddler TV time, or fish fingers for tea again.
• Remember: It’s just a phase, and ‘this too shall pass’.

After 15 years of working in Early Years and gaining my qualifications to become an Early Years Professional, I left my full time role as a Pre-School Manager to have my son, who is now two years old. From my time in Early Years, I knew it was important to work with parents and I always felt strongly that parents are their child’s very first educators. hile I was on maternity I began to understand the importance of play within the home environment and how it sets the foundations for later learning. Amazingly, by giving your child the opportunity to play at home, you’re also giving them the best start in life. As parents, we are our child’s first educators and their learning starts from birth. From the moment you begin to smile at your baby, talk to them during the day, go on a walk, sing songs, have cuddles and meet their physical and emotional needs, you are teaching your child. All these activities that go on during the newborn days are the start of your child’s learning journey. Understanding the role of play in learning is crucial for us to be good parents. It is through play – by engaging in new experiences and activities which interest them and meet their individual needs - that children build on their previous skills and knowledge and develop their learning further. During play, children use language/communication, mathematical knowledge, creativity, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical activity and problem solving. It is a powerful way for children to learn effectively at their own pace!
Experiences within the home do not need to be expensive - it can be as simple as a walk to the shops where you describe what you are doing and encourage them to take an active role by encouraging them to pay. Activities at home can include simple things such as puzzles, stories, singing and trips to the park. In everything we do as parents however, we need to lead by example. Naturally, young children will look up to and admire their parents and other close relatives. Currently my son loves running as I take part in our local Park Runs every Saturday. I began these because I wanted him to see exercise as a part of our regular routine that is enjoyable and fun. I believe that we should be the person we want our child to become. You will be surprised at how much your child watches and observes you at home!
90% of a child’s brain development happens by the age of five, which is why the early years are so vital and children need to be exposed to a variety of experiences. Different experiences will introduce new vocabulary and build on previous knowledge to take their learning forward. Katy Emms runs an Instagram page to encourage and inspire parents to play at home with their children in different and imaginative ways that support their child’s development. Visit @my_little_fidget to learn more about how to create and expose your child to experiences and activities that are simple and cheap to set up at home. Oct-Dec 2019 Toddle About Suffolk 21 Oct-Dec

TRYING FOR NUMBER Secondary infertility is the most common type of infertility in women, yet many sufferers don’t seek out treatment. Fertility expert Dr. Larisa Corda, a regular on This Morning, explains more about the condition and what can be done about it. Secondary infertility is defined as a problem with becoming pregnant after you have conceived at least once before. People often underestimate how common this actually is, especially after the age of 35 when natural fertility declines much more significantly.
POSSIBLE TREATMENTS Treatment can range from continuing to try naturally if the tests are normal, to taking drugs such as clomid to help induce ovulation, intra uterine insemination, IVF and ultimately donor eggs or sperm. If there’s anything that needs to be fixed surgically, this can be done before treatment and may in itself be enough to allow you to get pregnant, such as treatment to endometriosis.
Aside from the effect of age and the impact this has on egg numbers and quality, secondary infertility may be due to the onset of new medical or gynaecological conditions, such as fibrods, or Asherman’s syndrome. It could be that you suffer from endometriosis or PCOS and that these conditions have got worse. Your lifestyle habits may have also have changed, your partner’s sperm may not quite be what it used to be, or you may have a new partner.
With the help of your doctor, create a plan as to what you are willing to try and within what sort of time frame, so that the experience doesn’t feel like an endless void and you create certain goalposts which motivate you, but do not leave you in despair if they have to be changed or shifted.
Secondary infertility often has a lot of guilt associated with it. Many couples feel hesitant about seeking help and tend to delay, due to the worry of feeling judged by others if they already have a child, including their doctor. But if you suspect there’s a problem and you’ve been trying for a year if under 35, or 6 months if 35 or over, it’s vital you go and see your GP to start some initial investigations. These can include simple blood tests to look at hormone levels, as well as a semen analysis and pelvic ultrasound scan to look at the womb and ovaries. Sometimes further tests are undertaken that look at fallopian tubes as well.
ASK FOR HELP Just because you have been pregnant before does not mean the second time round is any easier, especially if the first pregnancy ended in miscarriage or never came to be realised. The pursuit of another can often bring up emotions of sadness, fear, anger and disappointment and so it’s important to manage this stress with the help of a counsellor, who can enable you and your partner to navigate your journey and deal with any pressure from relatives, friends or even your younger child, about having a sibling.
Remember it’s OK to ask for help, and having been pregnant before is often a good prognostic sign. But things may have changed in terms of the health of you or your partner, and the sooner this is investigated, the better the chance of being able to do something to help you to conceive. Dr Larisa Corda is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and is one of the UK’s leading Fertility experts. For more details please visit www.drlarisacorda.com 24 Oct-Dec 2019 Toddle About
