Suffolk hospitals are offering newborn screenings, if you think your child has a hearing problem. If the technician doesn’t get the reading, your child is then asked to attend an ABR (auditory brain response) test when they are 6 weeks old. The audiologist places a small earphone in the child’s ear and soft electrode sensor stickers near the ears and on the forehead.
Clicking sounds and tones go through the earphones and electrodes and measure how the nerve and brain respond to the sounds.
Conductive hearing loss can be temporary or permanent. Conductive hearing loss is when the sound is not reaching the inner ear, usually due to a blockage or deformity. Often grommets are recommended for prolonged periods of conductive hearing loss.
Sensorineural hearing loss means there’s a problem occurring in either the inner ear or the auditory nerve. The nerves could be damaged or missing. The auditory nerves deliver sound to the brain, and this is a permanent hearing loss.
Some children experience a mixed hearing loss of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss this can occur in one or both ears.

• Be patient and repeat what’s being said.
• Use pictures to help them understand.
• Change your tone and use facial expressions.
Hearing Aids help children to access sounds by amplifying sounds. Regular appointments allow the audiologist to build up a map of your child’s hearing levels and frequencies, new ear moulds to be made and fitted and these days they come in a vast array of colours including pink and glittery!
Cochlear Implants are an electronic device which stimulates the auditory nerve through electrodes placed in the cochlea on the inner ear allowing deaf people to perceive sound. This is a 6-hour operation it requires a dedication and commitment by the family as it can take a lot of getting used to.
Sign language is a visual language that uses hand shapes, facial expression, gestures and body language. For many children with a profound to severe hearing loss, who get little or no benefit from hearing technology, sign language provides vital access to language and communication. For many deaf children it is their first language and the language through which they are educated.
Even when their children are not deaf, families may choose to introduce sign language early to support language development.
Hand-eye coordination develops earlier than speech skills and babies are able to use simple signs such as milk, eat, sleep, nappy and teddy, before they are able to say these words.
Ipswich Deaf Children’s Society (IDCS) is a charity that supports deaf children and their families planning accessible events and days out and if gives you the opportunity to ask questions. The IDCS also helps to fund British Sign Language classes and grants for other equipment as well as helping with advice on benefits and education.

These cute little Pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats are child-friendly and so easy to make! The perfect little Halloween treats for adults and kids alike. This mixture makes 12-14 Rice Krispie treats.
213g jar of Marshmallow Fluff
56g unsalted butter
Orange food colouring
140g Rice Krispies
Large chocolate chips
any straight piece of chocolate
pumpkin stalks).

Black writing icing
1. Place the marshmallow fluff and butter into a large saucepan over a low heat. Stir continuously until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth.
Add in the orange food colouring, a few drops at a time until you get the desired shade.
3. Add in the Rice Krispies and stir until they are all orange.
4. Line a baking tray with grease proof paper.
5. Take a heaped 2 tbsp of mixture and shape into a ball (Tip: wear disposable gloves!)
6. Place onto your lined baking tray and stick your chocolate stalks in the centre.
7. Press a green M&M to one side of the stem.
8. Repeat until you’ve used all the mixture.
9. Leave to set for 10 minutes, then draw a face on one side of your pumpkin with black writing icing. Get creative!
10. Leave to set for a further 10-15 minutes, then enjoy!
