THE DINOSAUR THAT POOPED A PLANET

KING BABY BY KATE BEATON

Reviewer: Natasha Kelly (Northampton)

This book is King Baby, who must be obeyed, fed, and burped, and changed, and loved...sound familiar? As a new parent this book made me laugh out loud as it tells the exact story of how my life is now run by my baby! This book would be great for soon to be parents as a funny gift, or for a toddler to help explain what a new baby is like. I loved the illustrations, it’s very funny and I finished it with a smile on my face.

BY TOM FLETCHER & DOUGIE POYNTER

Reviewer: Tanya Camilleri (Banbury)

Danny and the Dinosaur go to the space museum and end up on a rocket in space when they realise they have forgotten their lunch. When Danny realises they can’t get home, the dinosaur comes up with a master plan. It’s time for poop, and lots of it! Bella (5) and Leo (2) found this book hilarious. I would definitely recommend it as something a little different to other books out there.

BY DK

BY ALICE V LICKENS

Reviewer: Lucy Gallo (Northampton)

This book is about the adventure of a little tiger cub discovering the different kinds of animals in the jungle and their sounds for the first time. The sounds are hidden under flaps and my son thoroughly enjoyed the noises - seeing his facial expressions as he heard them was lovely. The pictures within the book are real photographs which I think is great as your child can see what these animals really look like.

Reviewer: Kimberley Williams (Warwick)

This is a fun book about cowboys and has a paper doll with paper clothes you can dress, as well as 17 stickers. It tells you about how cowboys lived, what they ate and the language they used, which led us on to lots of fun role play ideas. I would recommend this book for children 3 years and up as my little boy is 2 and he found dressing the doll a little hard. Saying that, he still absolutely loved this book!

BY RUTH GARY ORBACH Reviewer: Victoria Crabb (Milton Keynes)

Apple Pigs is a simple story about a girl looking after a tree, which feels uncared for. Once it feels loved and cherished it blooms into the most beautiful and fruitful tree. It was the perfect bedtime read which engaged all 3 of my children (20 months, 3 years & 4 years). We felt the story was very nurturing and caring and the illustrations were beautiful and brilliantly done.

MUSIC LYRICS

Babies remember music

Did you know the ear is the first organ to develop fully in the womb – meaning that at just 11 weeks an unborn baby will be able to hear the world around him and take comfort from the sounds of mum’s (and dad’s) voice?

Studies have shown that babies who hear different types of music in the womb are more easily settled as newborns, and less upset by changes in their environment. Another study has shown that premature babies who were sung lullabies reached normal weight quicker, were allowed out of hospital sooner, and were less stressed.

Babies remember music and songs that they have heard in the womb for up to 12 months after they have been born. So, while singing a lullaby to baby once he’s arrived comes naturally to many parents, there’s a growing body of science showing the far-reaching benefits of singing to baby before he’s born as well. Unborn babies hear lower sounds better than high pitched sounds, so you may consider playing music with a lower frequency, although the most important thing is that you are enjoying it – either by relaxing quietly or by singing like a diva. (There is no real need to strap yourself up with the headphones on your tummy – your baby will hear the music anyway and you might just startle him!)

Once baby’s born, carry on sharing music together. A growing baby thrives on ‘happy vibes’ and you can pass on those nourishing vibes as you listen to music and songs that you enjoy. Early exposure to singing, listening to and playing music can sharpen up a whole range of skills too...

In babies and infants, greater exposure to music increases cell changes in the area of the brain concerned with speech. And since music uses both sides of the brain, it boosts other areas too, such as movement, creativity, spatial reasoning, memory and emotional intelligence.

Melodies and lyrics teach us so much as we grow (would you really have learned the alphabet so quickly if it didn’t have a tune?) - they can be a gateway to a whole new level of learning and creativity. Simple songs and rhymes with a steady beat and repeated lyrics are particularly effective, so get singing “Row, row, row your boat”. It’s fun, but it also helps children to develop one of the key skills of learning – the ability to observe and mimic the things going on around them. Joining in songs also gives young children the chance to learn new words. Easy rhymes help them realise that language is full of patterns which can be fun to play with - and these are the steps which lead on to humour and jokes.

Music creates resilience too – a key to learning, built through something as simple as being determined to bang on that drum. Whether you’re musical or not, it’s simple (and free!) to give it a go. Spend time singing with your baby. Clap and experiment with sounds and watch their faces light up. You don’t need anything to get started except your voice (and down the track perhaps a few saucepans and a spoon!)

(Part of a series of articles on children’s emotional well-being by Play Therapy UK).

DOLL’S HOUSE THERAPY

How the classic doll’s house is being used in play therapy to help heal emotional and psychological problems in children. The toolkit of a Play Therapist is made up of toys and a wide range of creative arts materials which allow children to play, create and express themselves in a way of their choosing. Play therapy utilises these props to heal children’s emotional, behavioural and other psychological problems. The toys vary widely and represent different things such as real life, fantasy, scary scenarios or sensory exploration. Examples include puppets, figurines, animals, cars, swords, dolls, medical kits and more. They allow the children to explore all sorts of ideas and situations in a safe and supportive environment. The doll’s house is a particularly useful tool for the Play Therapist. In the western world, doll’s houses appear to have shared meanings for many. They symbolise a microcosm viewpoint of past, present and future homes, reflecting the social function of different rooms and human interaction within them. They

evoke feelings from around the home and about family relationships. By watching a child play with a doll’s house, a therapist can discover a lot about them as the child’s unconscious mind expresses itself through play.

What you can do at home If you buy a doll’s house, let your child choose one themselves. But you can make one too! Find a clean old box, other bits of cardboard, some sticky tape and glue and maybe some appropriate paint. Have fun helping your child build the house to their design. Maybe your son will create a fort or castle rather than a doll’s house – it’s the same thing! Then let them play as they want to – just keep them safe and join in only if they ask you. No, this isn’t play therapy. It’s called non-directive play and it will help your children to develop naturally and may help with any slight emotional well-being issues.

Controversy Corner

Should You Vaccinate Your Children? Tackling and debunking the myths about vaccinations

By Dr Zareena Hyder, NHS GP and TV doctor on Channel 5’s GPs We all want to do what is best for our children. Even before they are born we are carefully considering the safest car seats, baby gates and parenting styles with the aim of giving them the best possible chance in life. Yet an increasing number of parents over recent years have been refusing to give their children the amazing protection that is offered to them, for free, in the form of vaccinations. This not only puts their own child more at risk, but has led to a rise in the spread of contagious diseases. This is putting others in danger, causing serious complications and even death around the world. Put like this, it seems crazy that some parents don’t let their children have their injections. But they aren’t crazy or stupid – they have just been misled, and the media’s thirst for controversial headlines really hasn’t helped at all. The most common reasons for poor uptake of vaccinations are:

1. POOR AND MISLEADING RESEARCH In 1998 a research paper was published by Dr Andrew Wakefield linking autism and gastrointestinal problems to the MMR vaccination. This convinced huge numbers of parents not to vaccinate their children and was the start of the anti-vaccine movement. This paper was completely discredited soon after it was published and Dr Wakefield was eventually struck off the GMC’s (General Medical Council) list of medical practitioners. Although this publication has been debunked, there have been some serious repercussions. Immunisation rates have dropped from 92% to 73% and in some areas of England even lower. (1) 24 Jan-Mar 2017 Toddle About

The

Behind Closed Doors

Many parents are still convinced that the MMR vaccine could lead to autism but this is simply not true. This has caused a worldwide increase in measles, mumps and rubella and these are life threatening illnesses.

2. ANTI-VACCINE ACTIVISM Anti-vaccine activism still persists. Members of this group believe that a child will be able to fight off the diseases with their own immune system. This is unfortunately leading to a rise in contagious diseases being spread with serious and sometimes deadly consequences.

3. CELEBRITIES Every so often when we think the myths are settling, another celebrity comes up with an unproven theory linking vaccines to autism or other illnesses, and the health of the public dramatically takes a hit as a result. For example, Robert De Niro made allegations in April 2016, reporting that the MMR vaccine had changed his son overnight.

WHAT IS A VACCINE? It depends on the type of vaccine but, in general terms, vaccines contain weaker or dead strains of the virus/bacteria that cause an illness. Injecting the vaccine into the body allows it to safely develop an immune response against the virus/bacteria. This means that your body recognises that you have already been exposed to this disease if it comes across it again in the future and therefore it can fight it off quickly, before it develops into the full blown illness.

icon tells you which advertisers have a voucher in the centre pages

DEBUNKING THE MYTHS MYTH NO. 1: Vaccines cause autism As a doctor I tell my patients this is simply untrue the article in the Lancet by Wakefield has been completely discredited. Several major studies have since been conducted and none of them have found a link. Autism is a diagnosis that we are seeing more of and this is likely to be because we are becoming better at diagnosing it. The cause is still unclear, but not a single study has shown any link between vaccinations and autism. MYTH NO. 2: Vaccines contain unsafe toxins Vaccines in the UK undergo rigorous testing methods to ensure they are safe to use before being released. It would be completely unethical to be giving vaccines to babies, children or adults without ensuring their safety. MYTH NO. 3: Babies’ immune systems can’t cope with so many vaccines Babies and children, as I am sure parents have seen for themselves, bounce back from being injured or poorly pretty quickly. Immune systems of babies and children are much stronger than you might think. The immune system is vast - it consists of many different types of white blood cells which fight for us in a variety of ways, and they are being replenished continuously. Even if we gave babies all their vaccinations at once they would still only be using around 0.1% of their immune capacity.(2)

MYTH NO. 4: Surely natural immunity is better than having vaccine immunity Natural immunity is very good and yes if we are exposed to an illness, like the common cold for example, our immune system will work hard to fight it off. This should result in a stronger immune system, so if our bodies were faced with the same common cold virus again, it would not affect us in the same way. However, the risks of catching serious and life threatening diseases are high, and for this reason it is still very sensible to vaccinate against them. Measles, for example, will cause a rash, fever, lethargy and painful joints - but it could also cause complicated pneumonia and death. We vaccinate because we do not want to take such risks with human life when a simple injection can provide adequate immunity and prevent adverse outcomes. MYTH NO. 5: We don’t need to vaccinate because our infection rates are already so low Thanks to the majority of us being immunised, often the unimmunised few will be protected as they are less likely to come across a person suffering from the disease. This is dangerous logic however. If the numbers of people having the vaccine drop, more of us will be exposed to the diseases and the disease will spread. A major concern here is that this will cause infection in the minority of children who genuinely have a low immune systems, so cannot be vaccinated, such as a child with active HIV or leukaemia. These children or adults are then at increased risk of getting a life threatening illness and their own immune systems may not be able to fight it off. This can be fatal for the individual.

TAKE HOME POINTS • Vaccines are safe and effective for the individual • We know vaccines have saved lives and prevented disability in millions of people around the world • There is no evidence to link vaccinations to autism • Vaccines can eradicate life-threatening diseases

SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? If you or your family have not had your

vaccinations, go and book an appointment at your local doctor’s surgery! If you are unsure about which vaccine you have had or may have missed, make enquiries at your surgery.

MOVING HOUSE WITH CHILDREN nds of families move Robinsons Relocation have helped thousa and the ugly. house so they’ve seen the good, the bad and how to make it

– your move an enjoyable experience Here are their top tips to help make leaving their home. of pect pros y to be unsettled by the easier on your children, who are likel Moving home to a new location affects each child differently. As soon as you have made the decision to move house, it is important that you discuss the move with your children as soon as possible. Your move can be a positive adventure, provided you make it a family affair. Be sympathetic to your children’s individual needs and fears but remember, children do adjust quickly - even those who have reacted negatively at first, or who are overly concerned.

Constructive ways to help children cope with leaving their old home • Let them tell their friends and neighbours themselves that they are moving. • Get them involved in certain activities to do with the move such as organising and planning how to move your pets and plants. • Help them to collect the addresses of all their friends (including parents’ email addresses) so that they can keep in touch. • Involve them in organising a sale or charity donation of toys, clothing, books and other unwanted items before move day. • Hold a ‘say goodbye to old friends’ party. • If your children have not been able to accompany you on your initial visits to your new home, it is a good idea to take photographs of your new house and the local community.

• Find out as much information as you can about your new community such as neighbourhood, schools, local areas of interest, etc. This will enable you to talk positively about the benefits your children will enjoy in your new home. • It’s a good idea to involve your children in plans to decorate their new bedrooms. • Become involved and active in your new community immediately and your children will follow your example. • Encourage your children to keep in touch with their old friends.

Be prepared on moving day 1. Consider asking a friend or sitter to watch infants or young children during packing. 2. Make sure your younger children have their own box for their personal items - encourage them to use stickers or other decorations to identify their box as their own. 3. Prepare a ‘hot box’ which can be unloaded first at the new house, which contains items you will need immediately on arrival such as snacks, kitchen items and bathroom toiletries. 4. To ensure your children settle in quickly on their first night, it’s a good idea to pack separately a set of sheets, towels and personal items for each child, for easy access at bedtime.

Robinson’s Relocation have 120 years’ experience helping people move house. If you’re moving and could do with a hand, contact their Leamington office on 01926 833 395 or visit www.robinsonsrelo.com.  Jan-Mar  Jan-Mar Jan-Mar 20172017 Toddle Toddle About About Warwickshire Warwickshire 29 29

You are now faced with a consequence, how do you deal with the good, the bad or the ugly? Your response as a parent is key…

In a nutshell, this is what positive behaviour management is all about…

Validate your child’s feelings – “You look really sad / angry”. Try and get them to talk about their feelings. Also talk about how their behaviour makes you feel.

If we want our children to become responsible and resourceful members of the community, we first need to recognise that children are constantly learning and growing and that as parents we are also our children’s first teachers.

Be kind AND firm together to avoid extremes – have clear boundaries and stick to them, even when it’s not always the easy option. Ask your child what they think they could do to make the situation better. Stop crying, give a hug, get a tissue. Praise their ideas and solutions. They have just taken their first step in resolving a problem without you having to tell them what to do. After all… What we hear we forget, what we see we remember and what we do we understand. Offer a choice when possible. Choices provide small steps in shared power and are important if we want our children to feel that that can make good decisions for themselves.

With the right help and support, many people believe that from an early age, children can be taught to think for themselves and learn how to control their emotional and social behaviour without having to rely on one punishment after another to correct disobedience.

Do not try to solve problems when you or a child are really upset. Allow a ‘cooling off period’. Help your child understand that it’s ok to feel that way, but how we choose to behave because of our feelings isn’t always ok.

So how can you take a positive behaviour approach? Teaching empathy as a parent instead of telling a child what to do, is much more valuable. Rather than teaching your child to say sorry, ask yourself, “Is my child saying sorry because they understand what they have done, or simply because they know that’s what is expected every time they misbehave?” Written by Nicola Masters – Head of Early Years & KS1 at Akeley Wood Junior School & Nursery in Wicken, Milton Keynes. self Mums working for youRself

the options By Tim Freed

If you want a job with the flexibility to work around your family, you will probably have considered working for yourself. There are three main models for being self-employed - here we explore the different models and the pros and cons of each.

# Option A - The Entrepreneur You have a passion, an idea or a special talent. You spot a problem that you can solve and a gap in the market - and you decide to create a business to bring your dream to life. For most people, starting a new business is the first way they consider becoming self-employed. It is probably the most exciting and rewarding option available. It also carries the greatest risk. If you haven’t run a business before, you will be venturing into the unknown. It will require a significant investment of time and probably money, and you will have a lot to learn – often by trial and error. At the beginning you will be the visionary, the manager, the worker, the bookkeeper and the cleaner. There’s a lot to do, and if the business fails, it can be crushing.

If the business succeeds however, there are few things that will be more rewarding in your life. Not only will you be your own boss, but you will be able to provide work opportunities for others and, if you structure the business correctly, you will have a sellable asset when you are ready to move on.

# Option B - The Franchisee If the idea of running your own business excites you, but doing it on your own seems too risky and daunting, then buying a franchise may be the right option for you. Famous examples of franchises include MacDonalds, Subway and Domino’s Pizza, but there are franchise opportunities in virtually any line of business. Water Babies, Musical Minis and Rugbytots are all franchises in the baby and toddler world.

Much like starting your own business, you will be the boss and you will typically be building a business and a new customer base. The big difference however is that you will be operating under an established brand, following proven and tested procedures to build and operate your business, and you will receive training and support from head office every step of the way. You will also own a business that you can sell when the time comes. All this support and guidance does come at a cost, however. Financially, this typically takes the form of an initial investment to buy the franchise licence and then regular (normally monthly) franchise fees. There are also limits on what you can do – the franchisor needs to protect their brand and you won’t have the freedom to innovate and change course as you would with your own business. But, statistically speaking, franchise businesses have a greater chance of success than starting a new business from scratch.

# Option C - The Network Marketer or Independent Consultant If the upfront costs of setting up your own business or buying a franchise make those options less appealing for you, then a network marketing opportunity might be right for you.

A network marketer is an independent consultant, affiliated with a 3rd party company. You then sell the products that the company makes, to friends and family, via parties, networking and other methods. You are self-employed, you can set your own working hours, and you can normally still build a team, or ‘downline’, underneath you. In return for recruiting and training others, you earn a percentage of their sales too. Famous examples of network marketing include Avon, Forever Living Products, Usborne and Utility Warehouse. As with a franchise, you will typically receive training and support along your journey, and there will be some restrictions around how you operate. The big difference however, is that initial investment is typically very low in comparison. There are often fun incentives on offer for reaching certain sales targets, such as products and holidays. Depending on the organisation however, you may not have a business asset that you can sell when you want to stop. The opportunity is certainly there to make a decent income with many network marketing opportunities but it still takes hard work, time and perseverance to do so.
