New Football Classes in Kenilworth have child signed Club Futsal classes are a new kind football class running in Kenilworth for boys and girls aged 2½ – 7 years. Futsal is just like football, but uses a heavier and slightly smaller ball than usual. Because of this, Futsal develops extra agility and skill over standard football training and many premier league footballers swear by it as the foundation for their own success. Paul Holmes, Regional Football Scout, is the Director of Club Futsal UK and is passionate about giving children the chance to follow their dreams to become professional footballers. With links to Coventry City Football Club, all children who attend Club Futsal classes have the chance to try out for Coventry, and one child was recently signed by them on a one year contract. Harry Stockdale-Smith is just 10 years old and is on the way to football stardom, having been playing with Club Futsal for just 5 months (since May 2011). Club Futsal is not just for those with dreams of becoming a professional however. The classes are first and foremost a lot of fun for the children and they also help them to develop physically and emotionally. The running and playing develops balance, coordination and physical strength, whilst

the improvement they see in themselves and the team atmosphere develops self-esteem and social skills. Club Futsal take students as young as 2½ years and currently have five 3 yearolds in the programme, all showing real promise. Paul says, “As in anything, if you want to be the best you have to practise so it’s great to start learning football skills young so they become second nature”. Club Futsal currently run classes in Kenilworth at Meadowhall every Monday from 5 – 6pm, and are planning to open new centres in Leamington Spa, Coventry and Northampton in 2012. If you would like to have Club Futsal classes running close to your area, you can register your interest with Paul by calling 07745565745. If there is enough interest (10-15 children) Club Futsal will open a centre in your area! Club Futsal welcomes boys and girls of all abilities from the age of 2½ up to 15 years. Visit www.clubfutsaluk.co.uk for the latest information. P.37

Child Communication How to encourage and support early communication and language

There is so much more to communication than just words. To become good communicators children have to focus, listen, remember, understand, select words, speak clearly, use body language and take turns! It’s no wonder it takes time to master and that some children find it complicated. Our son found learning language difficult. Baby signing was wonderful; it relieved tantrums and meant that he could communicate his basic needs. I began looking for other ways to encourage his speech, but no-one would help. Eventually we were granted a place on a parent based therapy course, and subsequently attended other courses, where we learnt a range of techniques to support and encourage him. I wondered why this information wasn’t readily available to every parent, and thought it was wrong that I had to fight so hard to get it! The language techniques are simple, easy to learn and effective for all children. They involve making small changes to the way you interact with your child, but can make a huge impact on their development. Here are a few techniques you can try…

Provide a commentary

Get down on their level

Make the most of your time together by turning off any background noise so they can focus on you. Let them choose a toy, follow their lead and tell them about the items they are holding – keep your language slow, simple, child-like, clear and repetitive. You can give a running commentary of what they are doing, for example “car, small car… car is moving… up ramp… car up, up, up… car down, down the ramp.” This repetition is very important; children need to hear a word over and over again before they understand it and even more times if they are going to attempt it themselves!

You can increase the quality of interactions, and the chances for eye contact, by moving your whole body so you are at the same level and face-to-face with your child. This gives them the best opportunity to copy you and puts you in the best position to encourage and support them. If they crawl off, follow them and get face to face again – this can be very difficult and tiring! Praise any attempts at speech with enthusiasm and encouragement.

Repeat what they say Once your child starts to use words, irrespective of pronunciation, show you understand by repeating the word correctly. You can help by adding another word, for example if they say “cat” you can repeat it and say “yes, black cat”. This technique can be applied to any level of development, to encourage 3, 4 or 5 word sentences, or to encourage an older child to use adjectives.

These techniques (plus others), combined with baby sign, can give development a real boost. We have watched our son become a chatty child and it is incredibly rewarding. Give the techniques a try; I was so impressed that I was inspired to create baby and toddler classes incorporating them. Go on - you’ve got nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain! Written by Nikki Sayers. Nikki Sayers has created Dandy Development baby and toddler classes to help with children’s development using these techniques and many more. Classes are held in Leamington, Warwick, Barford and Offchurch. Visit www.dandydevelopment.co.uk for more information. See advert on page 37

Reader Recommendations

Thank you to all of you who sent us your recommendations of the bump, baby and toddler things that you love and think everyone should know about! As before, our ‘Editor’s Choice’ recommendations have won a prize - this edition was a letter from Santa for your little ones, that arrived in time for Christmas.

Editor’s Sign & Sign Classes oice We go to Pippa Jenkins’ Ch Sing & Sign class in Warwick. She’s just one of the loveliest humans! My daughter and I have taken a few different classes but this is by far both of our favourite. Lily really opened up in the relaxed environment and the signing itself has been fantastic help with understanding Lily as her communication skills develop - we believe it actually introduced her to the idea that she could communicate, far earlier than speech alone would have done. Lily has even invented her own sign for ‘swing’! She is now 16 months and can ask for music on, tell us she’s hungry, thirsty, ask for some specific foods, tell me when there’s a noise concerning her, and much more. It took me a while to get used to doing the signs, but once I got the hang of it, Lily quickly started picking them up too and it’s just lovely to see her delight in her new found ability! I can’t recommend this class enough. Rachael Mantle and Lily Clementine, Leamington Spa Hug-a-Bub Sling I can’t recommend my hug-a-bub sling highly enough. It is a soft fabric sling that holds babies nice a close and warm to your chest. My son loves it and is instantly soothed being in it plus it means my hands are free for getting on with stuff-brilliant. Amy Burt and Arthur (9 weeks)

The

Editor’s Dandy Development Choice Classes As a mum of 18 month-old twins who like different activities, it has been difficult to find a group that incorporates a bit of everything to suit their needs. However, the Dandy Development classes based in Warwickshire do just that, as each session has a mix of singing, movement, signing & playing. Nikki Sayers, who runs the classes, is fantastic with the children and each week she keeps their attention and gets everyone involved and on their feet. Even the parents enjoy the classes and have fun! The classes last approximately 50 minutes and suit the ages from 4 months to approx 2.5 years. Each week, Nikki introduces a new theme and “Dandy” (the cuddly lion mascot) makes an appearance which the children love. The children learn new songs as well as traditional nursery rhymes. We also get to take home information each week on what has been learned so we can use it at home. Andrea O’Brien (Mum to Maisie and Lily - 18 months) from Rugby Editor’s Tiddlers Mother & Choice Baby Group I love this group. It is held at the Baptist church, Castle Hill, Warwick. (Mon & Tues 10-12). Tiddlers is a lovely group for babies up to 1 year and the age limit means you don’t have to worry about tiny babies getting squashed by older children. It’s run by the kindest, friendliest ladies. I have been taking Sienna since she was only ten weeks old and we have made amazing friends. Chantal Ousbey & Sienna (11 m)

Editor’s Baby-Led Weaning Choice We did baby-led weaning with Dylan, and it was amazing. He loved being able to explore food with his hands and eat exactly what he wanted. He loved feeling ‘all grown up’ and eating food off our plates and now eats all sorts of things. His favourite meals are pasta pesto or kedgeree, which he now eats with a spoon. Baby-led weaning has given him an adventurous palate! Helen and Dylan (2), Alcester Scan this QR code to read reviews and recommendations on the Toddle About website

Pregnancy: What’s Good & Bad We all know that there are a lot things that have the potential to affect an unborn baby during pregnancy – smoking, alcohol, shell fish and the like. But did you know about these things? A study in 2004 showed that eating chocolate during pregnancy might have beneficial effects for a baby. The babies in the study had their behaviour ranked 6 months after birth, looking at things such as fear, smiling and laughter. What they found was that the babies whose mothers had eaten chocolate daily were more active, and smiled and laughed more. Where the mothers had been stressed during pregnancy, those who had eaten chocolate regularly had babies that showed less fear of new situations. A link between chocolate and baby behaviour was not established by the study, however the researchers speculated that the chemicals in chocolate that are associated with positive mood may have been passed on to the baby through the placenta. Inconsistent Mood is Bad A study carried out earlier this year made an interesting discovery – that a mother’s mood during pregnancy can affect the development of their baby after birth. The study tested pregnant women for signs of depression before and after birth and also tested their babies’ postnatal development. They found that what mattered to the babies was the consistency of their environment before and after birth. That is, the babies who did best were those who either had mothers who were healthy both before and after birth, and those whose mothers were depressed before birth and stayed depressed afterward. What slowed the babies’ development was changing conditions—a mother who went from depressed before birth to healthy after or healthy before birth to depressed after. “We must admit, the strength of this finding surprised us,” Sandman says. He went on to suggest that the study emphasises the need to screen mothers for depression whilst pregnant so that they can be treated before the birth, rather than waiting till afterwards. The Naughty step debate

Many of us use or have considered using the naughty step. We’ve all seen Jo Frost (AKA Supernanny) use it to successfully transform disruptive children’s behaviour, however some experts argue that punishing children (in this, or any way) can be detrimental to a child’s development and can actually cause them to misbehave more.

For The Naughty Step It works! The proof, as they say, is in the pudding, and the naughty step really works. There are countless anecdotal stories regarding the success of this technique to prove its effectiveness. Allows the child to calm down and reflect The naughty step removes the child from the situation that caused the bad behaviour, making it easier for them to calm down. Having this quiet time on their own gives the child a moment to think over what they have done. Jo Frost describes the naughty step as a place of reflection where the child realises they’ve done something wrong. Gives the child a clear consequence for their actions Using the naughty step consistently shows the child that there is a consequence for all their actions and that they will not get away with misbehaviour. This causes them to behave with more respect towards their parents as they learn that there are repercussions for their bad behaviour. Bad behaviour gets no attention Much misbehaviour in young children is caused by a desire for attention. In being removed from what they were doing and being made to sit on their own with no attention and no audience for their behaviour, the child soon learns that misbehaving has the opposite effect from what they intended. Couple this by rewarding good behaviour with your attention, and children soon learn what gets the desired result. Helps the parent to calm down While the step is in use, the parent gets a valuable moment gain some perspective on the situation and calm down themselves. Discipline rarely has positive outcomes when a parent loses their temper.

18

Teaches what behaviour is unacceptable Explanation is a key part of this technique which, through repetition, teaches the child that they are being punished because of particular things that they have done. The explanation is very clear so the child soon learns what behaviour is acceptable and what is not. Teaches the values of repentance and forgiveness By requiring the child to say sorry, they learn that it is OK to make a mistake as long as they apologise. The parent also models that it is right to forgive someone who is sorry for something they have done. Is a simple technique The naughty step takes the complexity out of discipline. There is a simple formula that anyone can follow, taking away possible damage caused by parents using a trial and error approach. Summary of the Naughty Step Technique The naughty step technique is a ‘time out’ method used as a punishment when a child misbehaves. In summary, the child is told what it is they did wrong and that their behaviour is unacceptable. The child is warned that if they behave in that way again they’ll be placed on the naughty step. If they misbehave again the child is sat on the naughty step, told why they have been put there and how long they have to stay there (1 minute for each year of age). If the child gets up they are put back there until they stay for the required length of time. They are then told again why you put them there, and asked to apologise. You then give them a kiss and cuddle and go back to what you were doing. Jo Frost suggests a naughty mat is better for the under 3’s so you can keep an eye on your child the whole time.

Against The Naughty Step Punishing children doesn’t really work The naughty step is a form of punishment and research into the effects of punishment on children has found it to be more of a quick fix as it rarely results in a long term change of behaviour. Distracts children from the real issues Children are likely to focus on how they are personally affected by their rule breaking rather than considering the effects of their behaviour on other people. Use of the naughty step might make a child’s good behaviour dependent on the presence of their parents. Doesn’t get to the root of the problem Using a formulaic approach like this makes parents less likely to consider why their child is misbehaving in the first place. Trying to deal with the underlying cause of the child’s behaviour would be more beneficial to their development and more effective in influencing future behaviour. Builds resentment Young children are desperate to exert their control over their world so are very resentful when it’s taken away. Putting a child on the naughty step makes them resentful which may make them want to misbehave again to seek revenge, or to regain the control that they perceive they have lost. It is inappropriate for under 4s Some experts argue that the Naughty Step shouldn’t be used with children under the age of 3½ to 4 years, as they are not developmentally able to understand what it is all about. Their ability to reason is not sufficiently developed for them to be able to learn from the experience and to therefore behave differently next time. Damages parents’ relationship with their children When children are punished like this it makes it very hard for them to see their parents as caring allies which is vital for a healthy parent/child relationship. They learn that the same people who care for them and comfort them when they’re hurt or upset also sometimes make them miserable on purpose. Since a good parent/child relationship is often a reason why a child chooses to behave well, using the naughty step might actually cause them to misbehave more in the long run. Signals that their parents’ love is conditional It’s hard for a child to understand why someone who clearly cares for them would make them suffer sometimes, and they may come to think that they are only loved as long as they do what their parents want of them. This can create insecurity in a child and sends a confusing message about the nature of a loving relationship. It models the abuse of power The naughty step involves a battle of wills, which the parent ultimately wins. Some experts argue that forcing children to undergo something unpleasant to make them behave sends the message that it is OK to use your power to make another person suffer in order to get them to do what you want.

Alternative methods of behaviour management Positive Time Out An opportunity to cool off is beneficial for children when it is done in a positive way. If the time out is treated - and explained - as a way to help your child feel better, rather than as a punishment, then the battle of wills is removed. Encourage your child to go to their time out place of their own volition and perhaps even stay with them whilst they are cooling down. Make their time out place somewhere comfortable and relaxing and involve them in choosing where it should be and what they would like there. Encourage Empathy Try to explain to your child why they should be kind or resist certain temptations, and explain the effects of their behaviour on other people. Use Kind but Firm Discipline. Instead of punishing little ones for their behaviour, simply remove them from what they are doing and show them something else they can do instead. Distraction and redirection are the best strategies for younger children until they are old enough to learn to respect and cooperate with others. Address the Root Cause Try to find out why your child misbehaved in the first place. Dealing with what caused their actions is the best way to prevent it from happening again.

Musical Together Kenilworth Classes Music Together first started in April 2011 It is a class that is run for 0-5 year olds to help them understand music and have fun at the same time. Marco and Helena who run Music Together are an upbeat and friendly team who work well together. The parents and the children all seem to respond well to them. They are both full of energy which instantly rubs off on both you and your children. On arriving at Music Together the atmosphere automatically made me feel comfortable and my daughter seemed relaxed. We were all given name tags and the first activity that we took part in was to sit in a circle on the floor and sing “Hello” to everyone in the group. This was a nice ice breaker. We went on to sing Incy Wincy Spider and then sang it again adding sound effects, we even sang it in our heads silently while just doing the movements

Little Splashers Swimming Classes My one year old daughter Sienna and I took part in a Little Splashers swimming class at the Odd Fellows Club in Leamington Spa. We were both very impressed. Booking online was simple and once booked, we received a call from Jo, the owner of Little Splashers, which I thought was a nice touch. The pool was lovely and warm and there is plenty of parking – two hour free parking on the surrounding streets or chargeable on-street parking right outside the pool. Our time in the pool was very exciting and educational for both Sienna and me. Karen, the teacher, was lovely - she was so friendly. Karen gave each of the six children in the group individual attention as well as making the group activities fun. During the lesson Karen made me feel more confident about giving Sienna a little more freedom in the water and I learnt a few tricks I will be trying

and then the sound effects. This was so the children could learn the song in their heads. We slapped our hands on our knees to the beat of songs that we weren’t familiar with - these songs are all available in a book that is given to you when you join so you can learn them at home. When you’re not running or skipping round the room in a circle you can hear Marco playing the guitar, recorder or beating the drum and encouraging the kids to join in. They have many instruments that the children can choose to shake or beat. Before singing “Goodbye” to everyone at the end of the 45 minutes we even had the pleasure of hearing some “Green Sleeves”! Music Together is an enjoyable and educational activity for kids to take part in and I will definitely be going again. The only problem that I encountered was that my daughter did not want to leave. Written by Hayley Sweeney. Music Together classes run in Kenilworth on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. See advert on p. 33 or visit www.musictogetherkenilworth.co.uk for more info. next time I take her swimming again. For example, Karen told me to always turn Sienna around after she jumps in the pool and make her hold onto the side, so if she ever fell in to the water her instincts would be to hold on. It sounds obvious but I hadn’t thought of that! Karen also supervised me swimming whilst holding on to a ‘noodle’ Sienna was floating on. I would never have tried that before as I was scared we would both go under, but with Karen’s help I realised I could do it safely. I was amazed! Sienna was so happy throughout the half hour lesson and you could see that the rest of the children in the class were all comfortable and happy too. I really enjoyed our Little Splashers swimming lesson - the lesson was fantastic and well worth sacrificing a shower for! Held in a small, warm, quiet pool unlike some cold public pools, with a great teacher and friendly parents I would definitely recommend Little Splashers. Written by Chantel Ousbey. PixiFoto Baby, Child & Family Photographers As a fellow parent, chances are you know just how hard it can be to get a lovely, smiley photo of a child when they are in a new environment, with new people and under pressure to perform. And if you have more than one child, then you will definitely know how hard it is to get a photo of everyone smiling at the same time. So you will understand when I say that, with 3 children under 5 years, we were nervous when we went along to the photo shoot with PixiFoto. Hopefully, we said to each other as we left, the photographer will be a woman. The girls are much better with women. Our photographer for the day was Dale. Most definitely a man. And at first glance he looked quite serious. My heart sank – and then he opened his mouth. Amazingly, the children warmed to him instantly! Blowing raspberries and pulling silly faces, he quickly built rapport with the children.

Making it

Thankfully, Dale moved speedily from one shot set up to the next. PixiFoto’s Friends and Family package gives you a lot of pictures, so we had a lot of poses to run through and we were worried the children would get bored and tired before we were done. We needn’t have worried though – as soon as Dale had taken a picture he was happy with, he moved on and sped through the different shots at a good pace. After about an hour, we were done. The children were tired and hungry so we arranged to return the next morning to pick the shots we wanted. Dale had captured some lovely images and we’re looking forward to hanging them on our walls and giving them to family as presents. Would I recommend them? Absolutely. Whilst the photo session wasn’t as personal as other shoots we have had with independent photographers, PixiFoto are professional, quick and excellent value for money. Lessons in Business

Expect the best and prepare for the worst Lynne James started working for herself in 1996. Today she has the 7th most successful business within Forever Living Products in the UK, earning a six figure income, whilst working part time and flexibly around her twin sons. ‘There is nothing special about me’, she says and in fact, over the past 15 years she has helped many other people to realise their own success. Here, she shares some of her secrets of success that she usually reserves for her team. During my career with Forever, I have learnt that being a realistic optimist pays dividends. But what does that mean? What has worked for me and the people I have mentored over the last 15 years is to optimistically plan goals and business activities for growth and success and to believe in those goals – ‘expect the best’. However, I highly recommend, from experience, that you have a ‘Plan B’ in place in case some of the planned goals and activities go pear shaped – ‘prepare for the worst’! Always plan with enthusiasm and build in a little bit of ‘stretch’ to your goals – to develop and be successful,

it is important to be prepared to do a little more and work a little harder than is comfortable. Have this as your focus, but also build in a fallback position to ensure that, even if you don’t meet your desired target, your business will be maintained or your goal will still be achievable, even if the time frame has to be altered slightly. When setting goals, it is also important, whilst building in a little bit of ‘stretch’, to be realistic. In my experience, if you are too ambitious and set goals that are unattainable and then you don’t achieve them, it can cause serious de-motivation, a sense of extreme failure and lack of confidence. Although I cannot give any guarantees, by ‘expecting the best and preparing for the worst’ you may just start to see your business goals, personal goals or family goals coming to fruition. To find out more about the unique career opportunities that Forever Living Products offers and how you could work with Lynne James to discover your own financial freedom, call 01295 722525. New Year

New Career

!

Going it alone... your options

As the New Year marks another invisible line in the sand for us, a lot of people will be re-assessing their priorities in life, especially in the arena of work. Do you live to work, or work to live? How can we get a better work/life balance? As these questions arise, many people will consider the idea of working for themselves, though very few will take the plunge. And for many, that is exactly the right decision. But for others, they are being held back – by lack of confidence, lack of knowledge, money concerns … the list is endless! When it comes to working for yourself, there are actually a few different ways to do it that will suit people with different levels of confidence or business experience. And believe it or not, there are also ways to get a better work/life balance whilst working for someone else.

1. Start Your Own Business

2. Buy a Franchise

In reality, starting your own business is a lot easier than it may seem at first and there is a lot of support from the government at the moment to help new businesses get going. This option does carry the highest risk of all the options available, but the size of the risk is proportionate to the size of the potential reward. The sky truly is the limit when you set up your own business! Your own business could make and/or sell products, or may simply be you offering your professional services on a freelance basis, rather than as an employee. Starting your own business is perfect if you want to have complete control - from branding to growth strategies, it’s down to you. After a few years, you will have a business to sell, which is the way a lot self-made millionaires make their first million. The main downsides are that it is high risk and you will have a very steep learning curve with little guidance. Start up costs can be high and it is hard work, so not a great option for someone looking for part-time work. Most of the big business names you know such as Richard Branson and Alan Sugar made their millions by setting up and growing their own businesses.

A franchise is still your own business, with the same financial risks as a new start up, except you have a lot more support and guidance. When you buy a franchise, you buy the right to start up a business under the branding of an existing ‘parent’ company. The parent company will typically provide you with a blueprint of how to set up the business, training, on-going support and of course the use of their brand. In return, you will be required to pay the parent company a licence fee to buy the franchise (which may buy you a set period of time only) and typically an on-going percentage of your revenue. This is a great option for someone who wants to set up their own business but doesn’t know where to start. Buying a franchise will allow you to get off to a quicker and more confident start than going it alone, and you always have a mentor to call on who knows your business and how to help it succeed. Choose carefully though - the level of support you get from franchisors varies greatly and licence fees can stunt your growth if they are too large. Always ask an accountant who specialises in franchises to look over a proposition before committing to anything. Famous franchises include McDonalds, KFC, Mamas & Papas, Domino’s Pizza, Blockbuster Video and many more, and there are hundred of smaller franchises available as well.

3. Network Marketing Network marketing roles go by different names – Independent Consultant, Representative, Party Planner and more. In essence, these roles allow you to sell the products produced by a parent company after buying them at wholesale prices (sometimes on a credit deal, sometimes not). The models for selling differ, and include catalogue drop offs, door-to-door sales, party plans, online selling and others. Yet you are more than just a sales person in these roles. Usually, you will have the chance to recruit other people to the business, and receive a commission payment on their sales as well as your own. In this way you can become a manager and a mentor, helping others to realise their own financial independence. Network Marketing roles are great because they require very little in start up costs, they can be run parttime around your family, they typically have fantastic support and training and often offer incentives such as fancy holidays for top sales people. The main downside is that whilst you are building a business (i.e. your network), you rarely own it – so if you move on, you won’t have a business to sell at the end. Earnings can range from pocket money to six figure sums and are totally dependent on the amount of time and effort you put in.

Examples of Network Marketing Businesses include Phoenix Trading, Forever Living Products, Usborne Books, Avon and The Pampered Chef (see ads p.34-35).

4. Flexible Work If none of the above options sound right for you, then you should know that you can still work as an employee AND enjoy a better work/life balance. All companies are obliged by law to consider requests for flexible working from their employees, so if you really want to work part-time (especially after maternity leave) don’t be afraid to ask your employer. If you think your employer would never go for this, consider asking to trial a part-time or home-working arrangement for a couple of weeks. Employers will often agree to a trial first, as they are not committing themselves. Show them how much more effective it makes you and they may just agree to extending the trial indefinitely. If they still say ‘no’, there are some companies out there who have made flexible working a central part of their employment philosophy, so you can always apply for a job with one of them. For those of you within commuting distance of Northampton, Virtual Sales Team is a good example. In October this year, VST won the Top Employer Award for Talent Attraction because of their outstanding commitment to flexible working.
