All About... Sensory Play Boosting Baby’s Brain! By Nikki from Dandy Development The first two years of life are thought of as the ‘sensory motor stage’ and this is a crucial time for brain development. Babies use their senses to experience the environment around them, and by stimulating them with varied sensory experiences, we can quite literally increase their intelligence - research has shown that babies and toddlers who have been exposed to a wide range of sensory experiences typically achieve higher IQ scores as an adult than those who lacked proper stimulation. As parents we want to make sure that we are giving our little ones every opportunity to thrive and I created Dandy Development classes for babies and toddlers for exactly this reason. The classes combine a wide range of unusual multi-sensory experiences, for example jelly, lights and unique, tactile parachute hoops, with baby sign, music and instruments and there are plenty of activities you can also enjoy at home. Here are some simple sensory experiences for you to try:
Sight Babies prefer looking at people rather than things. Hold baby close to your face and talk tenderly in ‘sing-song’ tones. Help them to explore your expressions by putting their hands on your face. Use a mirror together and explore different mouth shapes, blinking and blowing raspberries. Make your actions large, slow and exaggerated and baby will soon start to copy. As they grow, put up photos of you and your family around the nappy changing unit and talk about what you can see. Half fill containers with water and food colouring, or add oil: babies will love seeing it move and splash. When the sun streams through the window, hang up a simple prism and enjoy the colours and shapes it projects.
Hearing Babies love the sound of your voice. Singing, humming, talking and reading to your baby are incredibly powerful tools: they strengthen your bond, aid communication development and give huge amounts of enjoyment. Babies delight in repetition so sing familiar songs every day. Simple hand held shakers and bells allow babies to manipulate sounds and explore rhythms and volume.
Touch Tactile stimulation is one of the best ways to communicate with your baby. Playful touching, tickling and movement games provide vast opportunities for smiles, giggles and cuddles as well as conveying tenderness, security and love. Build up a collection of simple objects to investigate, such as large curtain rings, egg cups, coconut shells, fir cones and cotton reels. These will provide opportunities to explore rolling, texture, noise and of course how they feel when they are chewed! Lay out a range of fabrics to explore, babies love to feel the contrast between furry and shiny fabrics. Babies learn best when they are relaxed and having fun so share the experience together and let them see how happy you are - seeing your proud smiley face boosts babies’ enjoyment and understanding. For more sensory experiences and a carefully planned course of baby sign, come on down to a Dandy Development class soon – quote ‘Toddle About’ at the time of booking and new customers will get their first two classes for free!

The Big Move By Jo from Little Splashers There has been a lot of research commissioned by the Government recently as to why some of our current 3-4 year olds are having trouble with their ‘balance and co-ordination’. These early skills are fundamental to later child development and affect key education skills such as reading and writing. It was found that our generation can sometimes ‘over use’ baby equipment like baby walkers, baby seats and car seats. In doing so, we are literally ‘restricting’ a baby’s early movement and supporting their bodies in unnatural positions. ‘The Big Move’ is a Government program currently rolling out as an education process to children’s centres, ensuring parents are given the latest advice and support.
Movement Creates Brainy Babies! At birth a baby’s brain is ‘unfinished’. (You can think of it as a computer i.e. babies are born with the hardware but need experience from their environment to create the code that forms the software). Movement and physical activity play a huge role in creating nerve connections in the brain (the code). Activities like swimming, which give the baby access to completely ‘unrestricted movement’, literally create and map the brain’s neurones.
These early connections provide the foundations for all learning in the early years and even for school and later life. The more a baby practices early movement skills, the stronger these brain connections will be. That’s why I believe that our Little Splashers swimming classes are literally helping to create ‘brainy babies’.
Tummy Time Being on their tummy is an especially important position for a baby’s development as it increases coordination, balance and motor skills. It is from this position that they learn how their body feels and moves. Lots of movement skills like crawling and walking are all based upon strong head and neck muscles. Not all babies like being on their tummies on dry land .... but guess what? They love floating and swimming on their tummies in the water! Jo from Little Splashers (see p.41) runs local swimming classes for babies to pre-schoolers. Their program is designed to enhance early years child development. Breastfeeding Number Two Did you have problems breastfeeding the first time around? Would you like another go?
She may be angry that she didn’t receive enough support and anxious about failing again. Acknowledging these feelings may help, and subsequent positive experiences may go some way towards healing previous disappointments. Each birth is unique, and so is each breastfeeding experience. Certainly, ‘some breast or nipple types... require extra effort, especially at first,’ some babies “can’t get it together” for a while and occasionally women have difficulties with milk production, ‘but most of the reasons are fixable’ 1. It is likely that you will find breastfeeding easy and natural next time. Breastfeed early. Babies arrive expecting to breastfeed and your breasts will already be making milk. Snuggle up together. Spend lots of time holding your baby skin to skin: its a great way to get breastfeeding going. Held close, with easy access to your breast, your baby may well latch on herself. Let people care for you while you establish breastfeeding.
Breastfeed often. Babies have tiny tummies, and breast milk passes through very quickly. In the early days, your baby will probably feed around 8-12 times in 24 hours. Learn to breastfeed comfortably. Getting your baby attached well at the breast is the key to comfortable feeds and making plenty of milk. It’s OK to ask for help. Breastfeeding can take a while to feel easy, but the earlier you get help, the better. Attend breastfeeding groups whilst you are pregnant. Surround yourself with other breastfeeding mothers who understand and support your decision to breastfeed. If your last breastfeeding experience was tough, it doesn’t mean the next one will be. decided to work together. By working with each other, they realised they could do so much more to improve things for pregnant and new mums in Warwickshire because between them, they had the expertise to help women through virtually all aspects of pregnancy and birth. Since then, the network has grown and their fields of work now cover specialisms such as homeopathy, massage, acupuncture, yoga, osteopathy, hypnotherapy, midwifery, NLP, counselling, reflexology... and that’s just mentioning a few! Today the PBN network has over 30 different services on offer, and it not only works as a central place to find all the pregnancy, birth and baby services you might need, but it also offers free information in the form of talks and demos in Warwickshire’s hospitals and at events such as the Peace Festival and of course the next Leamington Show in September. The PBN Show is a completely free event for parents to attend and is supported by local sponsors such as Toddle About, The Fetal Imaging Centre and Cotton Nappy Company. How to Photograph
Your Kids
How to get that great picture of your children By Storm Studios
Here at Storm Studios, we are often asked how we manage to get great shots of babies and children. Sometimes we are lucky, but of course there’s a great deal of experience and patience required too! So many frustrated parents tell us their kids start crying or over-acting as soon as the camera appears and those great shots just don’t happen. We’ve put together our top ten tips to help you get terrific shots of your children.
1. When are they at their best? Don’t try and take a photo when they’re hungry or ready for a nap. Be patient and time it so that they are at their most receptive and playful. You can’t always plan for a great shot, but you know best when your children will be willing participants.
2. Where are they? They’re down there on the floor….so get down with them! You’ll be amazed at how the world looks from their perspective and you’ll find you get some really great angles and positions by being at the same level as them. Babies and toddlers love to see you wriggling along the floor with your camera – you might even get a laugh, without having to work too hard!
3. Make it fun! Play games with them, bring toys or games they enjoy and encourage a reaction. No-one wants to feel posed or false, least of all children who end up looking frightened out of their wits! Play peek-a-boo round the camera and wait for that fabulous smile!
4. Dress up Using dress up or cool outfits can help older children to enjoy themselves more. Use these to help role play, and encourage animation.
STORMSTUDIOS
5. Remove Distractions Keep the children away from toys or pets that will distract and frustrate them. You don’t want tears because they can’t reach their favourite toy!
6. Quick Quiz Start talking to them, ask a few questions about their day or point at objects and ask what they are. Anything that draws them in and gets them talking and expressing themselves naturally will lead you to an animated shot.
7. Get in close Don’t be afraid to fill the frame with their face – it means you capture real life and you avoid distractions in the photograph pulling the eye away from your main focus.
8. Catch the light Face your children towards a source of light – the sun, the window, a lamp and this will bring out the natural sparkle in their eyes and give you a really vibrant shot.
9. Keep snapping There’s nothing wrong with taking loads of shots to make sure you get the one you want, especially if your child is moving around. Keep the shutter speed on sport mode for continuous shooting and then delete the ones you don’t want.
10. Ask the experts At Storm Studios we know you can’t visit a studio for every photo – we’re more than happy to chat to you over a coffee about how to get the best from your camera….it’s what we do! Call into Storm Studio’s brand new Coffee Shop (prams and toddlers welcome!) and meet the team at 13 – 15 Kenilworth Street, Leamington Spa, CV32 4QS, or visit their website at www.storm-studios.co.uk Call them on 01926 420030 or 07548 882833

Music... The Ultimate Development Aid Every child is born musical! By Anne Hole at Musical abc Music gives a child a way to express themselves and can also support many areas of their early development. As adults we can offer our children opportunities to experience and explore music. Singing especially helps a parent bond with their young baby. Have you ever noticed how we instinctively communicate with babies in a ‘sing-song’ way? Several studies have shown that babies respond more to a singing voice, than to a normal talking voice. “While spoken language can take more than a year to develop, music is one of the earliest things parents have with their children … when parents talk to babies, they instinctively switch to melodic and rhythmic intonations as a way of communicating emotional messages.” Henkjan Hoenig of the University of Amsterdam Singing, listening to music and musical play are activities that all parents can have a go at with their children. Even if you think you can’t sing, your child will love to listen to you! Here are a few activities that I hope will inspire you to have some musical fun with your little one:
Singing to your child Nursery rhymes! Children are never too young to hear nursery rhymes. They are great for rhythm and rhyme which both help with early reading. If you can’t remember the words or tune have a look on the web. You may even surprise yourself with longforgotten rhymes from your own childhood! Links to words and music for nursery rhymes to help you sing along can be found on the Musical abc website at: www.musicalabc.net/links.html Why not create your own songs or words to accompany routine activities with your child, e.g. To the tune of ‘Here we go round the Mulberry Bush’ This is the way we wash our face, (brush our teeth/ hair), wash our face, wash our face. This is the way we wash our face, (brush our teeth/ hair), wash our face, wash our face. On a cold and frosty (warm and sunny) morning (evening).
20 The
Sing, sing, sing! Sing any of your favourite songs to your child, whether it be pop, rock, folk etc. If you can’t remember all of the words just sing along with simple consonant and vowel sounds e.g. ‘ba’ or ‘da’ (these are some of the first sounds that babies make).
Listening Listen to a wide range of different styles of music. Children begin to form musical preferences very early in life, so let your child hear a variety of different music, including classical, pop, rock, jazz, world, folk etc. Why not build them their own playlist on your music player, or tune into different radio stations on long journeys in the car? Developing a regular beat. This can be done from birth. Choose a favourite piece of music then move your child to the beat, and gently tap along on their back: the beat is the underlying pulse of the music that you might clap or tap your foot to when listening. Put older babies and toddlers on your lap and move your legs to the beat, they will enjoy bouncing along! As a teacher, musician and mum I believe passionately that music should be part of all children’s lives, and I hope that these activities encourage you to share some music time with your child. I sang to my own children from birth, and have seen first-hand the positive impact that music can have on their development: learning to talk, read, write and now learning to play their own musical instruments. Researchers at McMaster University have shown that attending an organised music group like Musical abc can improve your child’s early development. It is also a great opportunity to meet other parents and children and to discover other fun activities to enjoy with your child. I hope to see you at a class soon as you begin or continue your creative adventure! Anne Hole is the creator and teacher of Musical abc classes. Sessions currently run in Leamington Spa and Kenilworth with new classes coming soon! For more information, visit www.musicalabc.net - see advert on p. 36 and free trial voucher on page 40.

The Computer Debate
For the first time in history, the majority of children in the UK are growing up with easy and regular access to computers. Most parents let their children play games and watch videos on their computers, mobile phones or tablet PCs, and most would agree that all our lives are enhanced by the presence of these technologies. But not everyone agrees. The computer debate hit the news in May this year when Dr Aric Sigman, a top psychologist, recommended to politicians that there should be a ban on screen technology in education until children reach nine years old. He believes that early exposure to computer screens in schools and nurseries is threatening the development of a generation of young children, and they should be encouraged to learn about the ‘real world’ first. So, is it wise to encourage computer use by youngsters or not? With the presence of advanced computers, tablets and smart phones in so many homes and pockets still being a relatively recent thing, it would be difficult for anyone to assert that they knew the answer to this question, but there are still plenty of opinions on the topic! We have done our best to represent the main opinions on both sides of the argument for you here.
For Computers
Prepares children for school According to a study published in the US medical journal Pediatrics, pre-school children from low-income families who used computers, scored higher in school readiness, skill development and IQ tests than children who didn’t. However, the study did warn that too much computer time could have negative effects. Need computer skills to function nowadays In today’s world, computers are everywhere we go and they will play a significant role in our children’s futures. By exposing children to computers at a young age, they are learning necessary skills that they can build on as technology continues to progress.
Computers help children learn Children can be ‘interactive learners’ with computers. They can read, do activities, play educational games and learn actively. Studies have found that computers can teach children letters and numbers and welldesigned educational software can help children understand complicated concepts that they might otherwise struggle to understand. Computer games also engage children well and can make learning more fun than more traditional methods. Computer skills are necessary for school Children use computers a lot at school now, so they will be at an advantage if they are able to use them confidently. Most children these days are adept at using computers, ipads and mobile phones and denying them the opportunity to learn about these technologies will put them at a disadvantage to their peers at school.
22 The
Children pick up computer skills easily Today’s computers are so intuitive, even very young children can use them. A one year old can figure out how to use an ipad or a mobile phone, so why not get them started as early as possible and get them off to a head start? They keep children entertained Computers are a great way to keep children occupied, giving parents some precious time to get on with work or household chores, or even to put their feet up for a few moments. Make children more inquisitive Computers give children on-demand access to an almost unlimited amount of information and ideas that would until recently have been difficult or impossible to find. This easy access to information allows them to explore questions and subjects of interest to them and encourages their natural curiosity and joy of learning. Can develop creativity and logic Child-friendly computer programming software (such as Scratch Jr) enables children to learn how to create their own games, stories and animations. These programmes help to harness and develop children’s creativity and develop their logical and numerical reasoning skills. Computers are better than television Research has found that children’s computer time has not replaced play or homework, but tends to take the place of time previously spent watching TV. The cognitive activity involved in using computers is preferable to the passive viewing of television.

Against Computers No proven benefits Neuropsychologist Jane Healy PhD concluded in her book Failure to Connect, that there is no advantage, and there may even be disadvantages, for children under the age of seven in using computers.
Con
tro Cor versy ner
Stunts creativity Children are not having to develop their own imagination and creativity as everything is already imagined and created for them. As a result, they often find it harder to amuse themselves as they are not used to making up their own games.
Damages children’s brains Neuroscientist Baroness Susan Greenfield, the former director of the Royal Institution, believes that spending too much time staring at computer screens can cause physical changes in the prefrontal cortex of the brain. The changes lead to a shorter attention span and more reckless behaviour in children. The prefrontal cortex is also associated with the habit of seeking short term reward, obesity, gambling addiction and ADHD. Children need real, not virtual experiences Psychologist Dr Aric Sigman argues that the young brain needs to be primed through real world 3D experiences that place plenty of cognitive demands on it. He explains that children need to hold, feel, taste, see and move real things to educate their neurological and cognitive infrastructure with a basic understanding of the real world. The 2D world of computers cannot provide these experiences. Play is more important The American Academy of Pediatrics stress that unstructured play time is more valuable for a child’s developing brain than any electronic media exposure. If a parent is not able to actively play with a child, then solo play time with an adult nearby allows a child to develop imagination, creativity, reasoning skills and motor skills. Play with other children helps children to learn social skills such as negotiation and turn taking - not to mention developing their speaking and verbal skills. Time taken away from developing vital skills Time in front of a screen could be spent drawing, writing, cutting, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing, climbing, making up stories, playing imaginative games, making things, etc. These are essential skills that take practice and are not being developed by computers. Strain on eyes When children are looking at a screen they are looking at a fixed and very close focal length for long periods of time, which can result in eye discomfort, fatigue, blurred vision and headaches.
Screen Time Recommendations
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents limit combined screen time from television and computers to no more than 1 or 2 hours per day for preschool-age children, and that children under the age of 2 should have no screen time at all. Reduces Attention span Children who spend too much time on computers get used to the visually appealing graphics, and sounds that go with them, and this can be detrimental to their attention skills, to the point where children are losing the capacity to follow a line of thought through a chapter or a book. Lack of physical activity When children are using computers they are typically sat still, which means they are not doing any exercise, or developing their fine or gross motor skills which they would be whilst playing. This lack of exercise puts them at an increased risk of obesity. Damages future academic achievement Dr Aric Sigman believes and has found evidence to suggest that children’s future reading and maths abilities are damaged by early screen exposure. There is plenty of time to learn about computers Children could easily learn everything they need to know about computers in secondary school. Arguments about children without IT skills in primary school being at a disadvantage when they enter the real world as adults are unfounded.

Baby Swimming www.

Your Questions Answered
Being one of the first baby swim schools in the UK, and the largest today, we have an enormous wealth of knowledge on taking your little one for a dip. Over the years we have provided advice to hundreds of thousands of mums about taking their babies swimming and have cleared up endless misconceptions too. So here are the most popular! How old does my baby have to be before I can take them swimming? As a general guideline, we recommend that 12 weeks or 12lbs (whichever comes first) is the point when your baby can start swimming. Babies can swim before this in warm water pools (over 30 degrees) if they wear a wetsuit, and can swim from birth in hydrotherapy pools (around 33 degrees). Is it true that I can’t take my baby swimming if they haven’t had their immunisations yet? According to official NHS guidelines, you can take your baby swimming regardless of whether they have had their first immunisations or not. The chlorine in the pool kills all of the bacteria they are being protected against, so they are safe to start beforehand. However, if your baby was more than

6 weeks premature, we would suggest that you wait until they have had their first set of injections. Should my baby just wear a swimming nappy in the pool? A disposable swim nappy alone will not prevent any accidents from leaking out into the pool. We use a double nappy system in our classes, consisting of a disposable swim nappy, or reusable equivalent, underneath (i.e. Huggies’ Little Swimmers®) with a SplashAbout® Happy Nappy over the top in order to keep everything well and truly contained! I can’t swim. Can I still teach my baby how to swim? Yes absolutely, we have taught hundreds of parents and carers who range from slightly lacking confidence in the water to being outright terrified! The water is always shallow enough to stand up and you don’t ever have to go underwater unless you want to. Obviously all babies are different, so if you have any particular concerns about starting your baby swimming, please give us a call. Water Babies hold local classes across the country. For more information, visit their website www.waterbabies.co.uk or contact 01295 709211.

Local Business Review Leamington and Warwick Academy of Dance (LWAD) Review - by Hayley Sweeney If you would like a fun activity for both you and your children to get involved in then Danceaway classes from Leamington and Warwick Academy of Dance (LWAD) may be just what you are looking for. Miss Katherine Knight teaches Danceaway classes for parents and toddlers from 18 months up to 3 years old on a Wednesday at 10.30-11.00 am in Leamington Spa. The classes are a fun mixture of music, dancing, role play, rhymes, singing and general physical play. To ease us in at the start of our class, Miss Katherine got all the children and their mums and dads waving colourful scarfs and jumping around in a circle. Bob the Builder then made a quick appearance and the children pretended to drive his lorry around with their steering wheels. They were told to stop at the traffic lights until the green light came on, introducing them to a very important lesson in a fun way. After ‘Row, Row, Row the Boat’, we all played six little ducks which I could tell delighted the children as their faces lit up while they made quacking noises and waddled around the room. Soon after this the children all became princes and princesses and they ran over to Miss Katherine
to grab their fairy wands so they could search for a magical garden. After emerging from the garden, the birthday girl in the group had the first go at crawling through a play tunnel and all the other children eagerly followed before moving onto a game of the ‘Hokey Cokey’ - it seemed like there were hundreds of little arms going in and out! The children then went on a train ride before going to a Teddy Bears’ Picnic where they used their baskets as a pillow and then to collect food in. The baskets were especially useful when it started to rain and they had to use them as hats! To end a fun-filled half an hour the children were all called to sit on the studio steps and given sweets as a treat for their hard work. We really enjoyed the Danceaway class. Chephirah, who attended the class with me, usually finds it hard to interact with adults and children that she doesn’t know but at LWAD she felt at home and had a wonderful time. She is already looking forward to going back! I would definitely recommend LWAD’s Danceaway classes – they are great fun, creative and educational too. See advert below.

Making it
Working for Yourself
Is it worth it? The Pros & Cons
If you’ve found yourself thinking that you need a job with the flexibility to work around your family, you will probably have considered working for yourself. This can be a daunting prospect, but if you choose the model of self-employment that is right for you then it can ultimately be the most liberating and empowering gift you could ever give yourself. There are three main models for being self-employed. We asked three mums who have taken the leap into self-employment why they chose the model they did and what they feel are the pros and cons.

Setting up my own business is one of the most rewarding things that I have achieved. Venturing into the unknown with your own business isn’t like buying into someone else’s idea and working for them. There are no pre-defined customer databases, advertising strategies or networks, but if you see your business as a long term investment and work with organisations such as Business Link, Trading Standards and good friends, you can be successful. When people ask me what it was like setting up

Water Babies is the biggest baby swim school and I have been running my franchise for 8 years now, growing it to cover five counties. Why a franchise? I wanted something that would work around my children and I was very conscious that I had never set up a business and thus, the support of a franchisor seemed a sensible idea. The franchisor should be able to give you advice in all areas – financial, day to day running issues, how to do something for the first time etc. You are buying into an existing concept which has been tried and tested so, theoretically, you should not make too many mistakes! Also, you are buying a brand which can have huge benefits if the brand name is well known previously. However, you do have to pay a franchise fee monthly to the franchisor and depending on the franchise, there are likely to be guidelines as to how you can develop your business and how to use the brand.
I came across The Pampered Chef about 8 years ago when I hosted my first Cooking Show and I fell in love with their products. The consultant talked about the flexibility of their job and how it could fit around my young family at the time. It would give me the opportunity to build my own business with very low start-up costs and no on-going fees to pay. I decided to give it a go - I had nothing to lose, but everything to gain. The part I enjoy most about my job is the support and training I give my team, while I watch them grow and develop their own businesses. I have never worked for a company that is more supportive when it comes to training, online support and recognition. I can’t really think of a downside! The one thing I can say is, you have to be self-motivated and prepared to put the hours in if you want to grow your business into more of a career, rather than just a hobby. You will get out as much as you put in.
