Hundreds of you responded, and we were genuinely blown away by your feedback. Here’s some of the things you wrote:
Travelling with Tots
“The mag is so fantastic! Parenting gold!!” “Your magazine is fab!” “Please don’t change!” We love making Toddle About – and as we approach our 10th anniversary, it’s so lovely to hear that it is still helping parents. Your feedback has prompted us to make some changes though: 1. The What’s New? section is now called ‘Bited Sized News’ (p.5-8) we have made it less crowded and got stricter on what we put in there, to make sure it is all useful and interesting content for you. 2. The Special Offers section in our centre pages has had a complete change. All vouchers now have a uniform design, so it’s easier to see what’s what, and they are all exclusive to Toddle About – you won’t find them anywhere else.

This is a music and movement activity using playdough, where children can strengthen their fingers and fine motor skills to get them ready for writing. As standard, all carers spend time with each of the children so that the children feel comfortable and happy, and the carers can make sure they learn at their own pace. Visit www.cotenendpreschool.org.uk or call 01926 491873. See P.44

By Jo Wilson, Swim Works
The obvious benefits of swimming have been long understood and recognised. Physically, swimming strengthens the heart and lungs, builds muscles and improves balance and coordination. There are also social benefits as it allows children to observe others, make friends and learn to take turns. From a safety perspective, even babies can practise the skills needed to turn to the side, back float, rotate and pull themselves up onto the edge of the pool. But swimming can give so much more, both to yourself and your little one. I would like you to consider the powerful notion of mindfulness learning to relax and live in the moment. In today’s busy world, swimming could have an even greater role to play in teaching parents to live in the moment and connect with their children. The practice of combining essential life skills with mindfulness focuses on facilitating strong, powerful bonds between you and your child. In our fast-paced daily lives, we are constantly bombarded with images, words and noise. Technology has taken over and can cause us to forget to connect with the people around us. We have become a society that creates endless lists, where planning and thinking about the future is commonplace, and we sometimes get caught up in comparing our lives with others. • Do we have a true sense of identity or have we lost who we are as a result of being surrounded by what others are doing? • Are we more preoccupied with recording the moment than we are with enjoying it?
As adults, we often miss the beauty around us, but children are so much better than we are at living in the moment. It is important to slow down, be more mindful, open our hearts and minds, and offer compassion and love not only to each other but ourselves, too.
• Swimming can facilitate mindful practises Attending a mindful swimming session, such as those available at Swim Works, can help increase awareness of the senses, which in turn might help reduce anxieties and fears. Being in the water with your little one will relax you both, ensuring the rest of the world fades into the distance as you focus only on each other.
• Ways to practise mindful swimming 1) Offer yourself a couple of moments at the start of your swim to take a deep breath. Relax and check in with yourself. Notice what your body is doing your breathing, your heart beating and so on.
2) Stand firm in the pool, feeling the floor. Take time to feel balanced, grounded and present in the moment, forgetting daily tasks and focusing only on what you can see, hear and feel in the present.
3) Slow down and savour each moment in the pool,
• How many of us check in daily with our heart and soul, and listen to or feel our breath?
like the simplest splash. Swimming can bring lots of joy naturally as the water brings out our playful side.
Jo Wilson is the founder of Swim Works and Aqua Sensory. Swim Works creates a non-competitive environment for swimming, where parents feel nurtured and safe, and children feel protected. With a state of the art pool and fantastic family-friendly facilities, Swim Works put their hearts and souls into creating a perfect place where you can truly relax, enjoy the water and escape for precious moments with your little one. www.swimworks.co.uk www.aquasensory.com 10 July-Sept 2019 Toddle About

AMAWRAP BABY CARRIER/SLING, £39.99 I’m not a fan of dozens of clips and buckles, so I love using wrapstyle slings. The Amawrap can support newborns and children up to 15kg so I used this wrap with both my 1 year old son and my friend’s 3 month old baby. The material is soft yet strong and it supported my 13kg son comfortably without causing me any discomfort. It was really useful to have him in the hip carrying position – my hands were free to do other tasks! I would highly recommend this as it’s snug, adaptable and convenient. Purchase from www.amawrap.com (Review has been edited).

Taking on a new challenge can be overwhelming, but at the same time so, so worth it! Don’t just listen to me, here’s what my team have experienced:
Sam
Before working with the company, I owned a bridal shop which was my dream job, however as soon as my two children came along it became increasingly expensive and stressful, leading to worry about missing my babies “firsts”. I’d known about this company for years as both my sister and mum are with them; I’d just never thought it was for me! As time went on I really began to see the lifestyles they were developing and the choices it allowed them to make so I knew I’d have amazing training and support just like the entire team do. I knew that to achieve our families goals I needed a good income as well as security and being able to work from home. Finally I decided to join the company myself and it was the best decision I made! Now we are able to have time as family, go on numerous holidays each year, I don’t have to worry about money, and we can make choices based on what we choose rather than what we can afford. afford. We’ve also been able to privately educate our children I have amazing life long customers and friends too thanks to this opportunity.
Georgia
I was 19 when I started working with Nat, whilst on maternity leave after having my first first daughter with a goal of replacing my income so I wouldn’t have to return to work... 5 years on I quickly replaced mine, and my partners monthly income allowing us to both be stay at home parents to our little girls.
Carolyn
With a background in recruitment and customer services, I started with the company 10 years ago, after loving the products. Having been made redundant twice, and really struggling with work/life balance, I took a look at the opportunity… It’s been amazing! I have the income I needed and my pension concerns are gone, and the best part is that I am in control of my life and time and I work it totally around my boys.

The Biology of Baby Swimming
The reflexes that come into play when swimming with our babies are absolutely fascinating. Claire from Aqua Beans swim school explains more.
C
an babies swim? This is a question we are often asked here at Aqua Beans. From birth, babies have a swimming reflex called the Amphibian Reflex which gives the appearance that they are ‘swimming’. It allows them to propel themselves through the water by kicking from their hips. By the age of about 12 months, this reflex starts to disappear. However, by reinforcing the kick during the early months using special exercises and word associations, your baby will be able to transition from the reflex movement into a voluntary, conscious movement. Therefore, if your little one has stopped kicking in the pool, it’s just a sign that the reflex is fading and it’s time for them to start kicking with a purpose! Kick kick kick!
T
he Laryngeal Spasm (or Gag Reflex) is really important when our little ones are learning how to eat solid food. However, it’s also vitally important in the pool. The spasm causes a contraction at the back of the throat which stops water entering the windpipe and thus prevents little ones inhaling water into their lungs.
However, it does not stop water entering their tummies. This is one of the reasons why we must be very careful when our little ones dip under the water. Your swimming teacher will show you how to recognise your baby’s cues so any dip under the water is on their terms.
F
loating with little ones on their back is a fabulous experience and young babies are generally very relaxed in the water during this exercise. However, by about 6 months old, parents are often surprised when their little ones suddenly start to protest by wiggling and squirming.
This change is caused by the Righting Reflex which means that little ones will try to lift their heads into an upright position. Being on their backs is a really important part of swimming (and is also a key life-saving skill) so it is important that we continue to encourage little ones to float on their backs. During this transition phase, there are lots of games and activities we can introduce to make the experience an enjoyable one so we can continue to practice the skill without all the wiggling and squirming! Qualified instructors at Aqua Beans will encourage both you and your little one to develop these essential skills. Information sourced from the STA Baby and Pre-school Resource Manual

WE’rE alL GOiNg ON a
FAmIlY hoLiDaY! by Claire Zakss, aka Mama Zakss
Picture this - you’re lying on your pineapple printed beach towel, in your best Love Islander swimsuit, feeling the warm sand trickling between your toes, the sound of the sea swishing calmly in the distance, ice cold Fanta lemon, the ultimate summer drink, quenching your thirst… that’s what holidays are about, right?! Well that’s what they were about, until you throw a child or two into the equation and we have a very different scenario. Your towel is likely to be hotel issued to save on that essential packing space, you’ve gone for comfort over style with the one piece M&S swimsuit, grains of sand being kicked up all over you, on your towel and in your bag guaranteed to remain there forever. Peace and tranquility has turned to ‘Mummy, Mummy’, tantrum, squeal, repeat and that Fanta lemon, well that has likely been kicked over, leaving a sticky mess attracting a line of the local Spanish ants.
OH, aNd tHe fUn dOeSn’t sToP ThErE!
Lifeguard mode on - forget that celeb autobiography you brought with you to read resume meerkat position, poised watching little feet running around the pool, ready to launch into full on slow-mo Baywatch run at the first slip. And finally, romantic three course meals with carafes of local vineyard wine are now replaced with the evening’s ‘Mini Disco Time!’, dance floors packed with transfixed toddlers bopping to Chocolatte, waving hysterically at the adult dressed as a giant waistcoat-wearing monkey, while you feed your hunger with bar snacks and indulge in another luminous cocktail to help survive the evening.
Secondly, siesta time (or nanna naps as we call them) are acceptable abroad for not only children but also adults. So make the most of that power hour, or two if you are lucky, and catch up on that much needed sleep. Lastly and most importantly, holidays are great family bonding time! There are likely to be only 18 opportunities to have a family summer break before holidaying with parents is uncool, so make life long memories, enjoy the moments and take lots of photos!
MAmA zaKsS’ TOp TIpS FoR faMiLy HOlIdAyS 1. Start packing a week early. Packing cubes are
great space-savers and all the top organised mummy bloggers rave about these! 2. Plan every outfit so you pack exactly what is needed and not 20 bikinis for 7 days. 3. Arrive in plenty of time, preferably more than the 2 hours so you can sit and make sure everyone is fed. No one wants ‘hangry’ travellers. 4. Put everything in the hold at the airport so you are hands-free walking around. Carriers are great for little ones. 5. Most airlines let you travel with formula or baby milk, just be ready to take a shot of it at security. 6. Pre-download all those CBeebies favourites on your kid’s tablets for flight entertainment. 7. Write a shopping list of things to buy abroad, such as nappies and local baby food. 8. Swimming nappies can be washed so reuse and save the planet. 9. Remember Factor 50 suncream is great but look out for the 5* UV rating too for protecting that delicate skin!
10. HAvE FuN AnD ReLaX…. IF YoU CaN!
It’s not all bad though! We may have said goodbye to Club Tropicana but there are perks to children on holidays. Firstly, these little people are like VIP passes at airports! First for boarding, special security queues and extra luggage to hide more shoes for mummy! Written by Claire Zakss. Mother to 1-year-old Stanley and springer spaniel Freddie. MY 2 MUMS HOWHOW TTIMES MES HA E HAVE CHANGED CHANGED Jesse Toksvig-Stewart talks about what it was like to grow up with gay parents. I was chatting with my step sister recently. We were discussing all things about everyday life, catching up. She’s still at school and I asked her how everything was going. She announced to me that there was another child in the year below who had two mums. I was so pleased to hear that she had an ally at school. This was something that I never had at all growing up. It is not really that long ago that being a gay man was illegal in the UK. The de-criminalisation act of homosexuality was put forward in 1967. It is so shockingly close to the noughties decade, that people are somewhat in disbelief that it took so long. The world is changing and people are becoming more accepting than they were when my parents or I was growing up. I’m 30 years old and still get moments where people say to me, “I don’t think that I have ever met anyone with lesbian parents before”. It is still unusual. My parents were at the forefront of same-sex parenting in the late 80’s. They didn’t know anyone else who was gay or lesbian and had babies. I guess this is where you can say that the times have really changed. It is unimaginable and when my parents tell me the stories now, it seems unbelievable. They were so worried about having their first child, me, that my mother opted for a home birth. Mostly because she believed in the process of a home birth, but they were also terrified. She was scared to death
that someone from social services would come and remove me. A lot of people judged her harshly at that time - I believe at one point someone told her that she was going to give birth to the children of Satan. This was the 80’s! Not the dark ages.
“ I always find it funny when someone approaches me to ask what it is like growing up with lesbian parents. But given the circumstances and how far we have come, people do feel like it is their right to ask. I think I find it peculiar because I would never think to enquire what it was like to grow up with heterosexual parents.” These fears seem almost dystopian when you say them out loud. But these were their legitimate fears of the unknown. They had no role models to base their family on. There were no social media influencers to turn to for advice or Facebook groups to gain confidence. It was just them. Two women, creating a family together. All the while with fear in them that someone might believe that the way they produced their family was wrong. I always find it funny when someone approaches me to ask what it is like growing up with lesbian parents. But given the circumstances and how far we have come, people do feel like it is their right to July-Sept 2019 Toddle About Warwickshire 23
“ I dislike using the word ‘normal’ when describing something, especially in the context of families. Because what is normal in this day and age anyway? There are so many different types of family in our society that the nuclear family is no longer normal anymore. ” I think that people expect being brought up by lesbian parents will be this wild rollercoaster of unusual parenting. But that certainly wasn’t my experience.
There are so many different types of family in our society that the nuclear family is no longer normal.
ask. I think I find it peculiar because I would never think to enquire what it was like to grow up with heterosexual parents. Even though I have never experienced growing up with a mum and a dad, I can imagine the experience was exactly like the one that I had. I grew up in a loving, secure, stable, fun and, dare I say it, normal family. I dislike using the word ‘normal’ when describing something, especially in the context of families. Because what is normal in this day and age anyway? There are so many different types of family in our society that the nuclear family is no longer normal anymore. Living with unmarried parents and being born out of wedlock is no longer a stigmatism, and being brought up in a blended family of step relatives is not considered rare anymore. So really, the question you should be asking is not “What was is like growing up with lesbian parents?” but instead “What was it like growing up in your family?” By asking that question you would receive a much more open answer from the recipient. So here goes. What was it like growing up in my family? I had two working parents. Two younger siblings. One dog. Two cats. We lived in a four-bedroom house (which at one point may as well have been a two-bed because inexplicably my siblings and I decided that for at least three years we would all sleep, cramped, in the same room together!) We went on holidays together, had picnics, went to school, were read bedtime stories, and put on endless shows in the playroom for my parents. It really was quite… regular. I had two loving parents, and I was perfectly happy - I guess as a child you don’t really tend to want something different if you are completely content and loved.
This is not to say that our unique family set up came around easily though. Remember the impending doom about birthing Satan’s children? When my step sister was born, society had moved on from the 80’s and into the millennium. Which is why she can account for more than one child with same sex parents at her school. What a wonderful world to live in! Although growing up with lesbian parents never made me feel like I was missing out on anything, it must be a magnificent feeling to know that there are people out there with a family set up like yours! It’s just not something I had. When I exclaimed about how wonderful it must be for my step sister to have someone at her school with a similar family, she hastily replied, “Well, actually I am the only one with two mums in my year!” There she was. Wearing it like a badge of honour and reclaiming her place in the family ladder. So I guess the times really have changed. There is more exposure and more families living their freedom and although we have a long way to go, I am enjoying the view as we do. I think that people expect being brought up by lesbian parents will be this wild rollercoaster of unusual parenting.

VIP CLUB READER REVIEW: Disney: The Simple Family Cookbook, worth ÂŁ1 Written by Victoria Wade.
The Disney Simple Family Cookbook was really colourful and easy to follow, especially for little ones which is great
love the fact that the sweets don t include re ned sugar as I avoid it for my child and there were also plenty of meat free recipes as well
All of the recipes were simple, they only needed a few ingredients and the steps were basic enough to follow Me and my daughter had a go at making the summer ratatouille and the chocolate mousse, I found both of the recipes were quick and simple to make, as well as fun to do together
Purchase from: Amazon
Overall, I think the cookbook contains a lot of really good recipes, it is simple to use and you could make some fun and delicious recipes for all the family
All of the recipes come with a prep and cook time so you know how long youre going to be spending making each recipe in total which think is really helpful I feel that the recipes were inventive, especially with how they linked to Disney ictoria was given this book as a freebie for writing the review Subscribe to Toddle About and go and you can do the same! Colourful fruit&veg lollies
By Emily Leary
K
These delicious smoothie lollies contain only natural ingredients and can be whizzed up in minutes. Make sure the kids get involved in adding the spinach and watching the lolly mixture turn green. This isn’t about hiding veg, it’s about celebrating all the ways it can be used, and challenging our perceptions while enjoying our food. PREP TIME: 10 minutes FREEZE TIME: Overnight MAKES: 6 lollies
Ingredients: • 2 bananas • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• small handful of baby spinach • 2 strawberries • granola, to serve
1. Pop the yogurt, bananas and vanilla extract into a blender and blitz until very smooth. 2. Pour one-third equally between 6 lolly moulds. 3. Pour half of the remaining mixture into a bowl. Add the spinach to what is left in the blender jug and blitz again until bright green. Divide the green mixture between the lolly moulds. 4. Finally, rinse the jug and return the reserved mixture to it. Add the strawberries and blitz until pink. 5. Pour into the moulds, push in lolly sticks and freeze overnight. Best eaten on a hot day, dipped into granola!
Tips • Cucumber adds a light, fresh taste. • Cauliflower and Avocado can make
chocolate lollies particularly creamy.
• Always taste the mixture before pouring into the moulds and add a dash of honey or more sweet fruit if it seems bitter.

Summer Fun
KALEIDOSCOPE Making a kaleidoscope is a fun STEM/science activity and craft for kids. It’s such a fun way to explore light, reflections, and symmetry!
YOU WILL NEED: > A crisp tube (eat the crisps first!) with a small hole in the bottom > Silver foil > Wrapping paper > A plastic fruit container > Some tissue paper > Sequins, glitter, stick on jewels > Scissors
INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Decorate the outside of your crisp tube with wrapping paper, and make a hole in the metal bottom for your eye hole – a screwdriver works well for this. 2. Line the inside of the tube with silver foil, shiny side out! 3. Cover the clear plastic lid of the crisp tube in tissue paper, sequins and glitter. 4. Cut a circle of clear plastic from the fruit container the same size as the crisp tube to act as a second lens, and decorate in jewels. Push it into the tube, jewels facing the eye hole. 5. Put the lid on and look through the hole, turning the lid. Please don’t look directly at the sun but do enjoy your kaleidoscope outside. The more light you have the better the effect!

By Parentkind
It’s nearly time for your child to start school! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little nervous about preparing them for this next big milestone. We asked charity Parentkind, for some top tips to help you get your child school ready this summer… 1 Speak positively about school
4 Read stories about starting school
Over the summer, you can focus on helping your child feel happy and confident about starting school by speaking positively about your own experiences, as well as those of their siblings, friends or extended family.
Take your child to the library and let them choose some books about starting school. You can use the characters in the book, and the situations they find themselves in, as a tool to speak to your own child about their feelings about starting school.
Make it fun by sharing pictures of you in your school uniform, or by showing them your old school books, so that they have an idea of what to expect.
5 Get them used to their new surroundings
2 Encourage independence Encourage your little one to practise getting dressed and undressed, into and out of their school uniform, coat and PE kit. To make it easier for them, look for Velcro shoe straps and elasticated waistbands or clip-on ties; fiddly buttons and laces can be tricky at their age! You can also help them to use the toilet by themselves, remembering basic hygiene rules - little fun prompts like making a hedgehog with their hands when washing them, will help them to remember!
Familiarise your child with their school before they start - go along to the summer fair and take part in the settling in or welcome events for new starters if you can. After these you can start talking about their new teacher, mentioning their name regularly, so they feel like they know them; and also arrange a few playdates with children you know will be in their class so they know a few friendly faces on the first day!
6 Have Fun! Starting ‘big-school’ is an exciting time and a real milestone. Enjoy it, stay positive and don’t feel your child has to know how to read, count or write before they start. Everyone develops at their own pace, and the early years staff will be there to support your child as they begin their school journey.
3 Shop for the essentials together Get your child involved in choosing their own coat, shoes or bag, as this will make them feel more excited about using these new items. Don’t forget, you might want to check out the school’s PTA pre-loved uniform sale, particularly if you need to get hold of items with school logos.
The qualities that matter most in reception are things like curiosity, independence and imagination – so make the most of the time before they start school by helping them grow these qualities, and having as much fun as possible with your child!
Parentkind champions all the ways that parents can participate in their child’s education. For more information about preparing your child for school, visit www.parentkind.org.uk 34 July-Sept 2019 Toddle About
