Reader Recommendations Free or Cheap Places To Go

Editor’s Choice St. Nicholas Park in Warwick I love to take my 7 month old daughter Sienna here. There is a lovely play area with baby swings and climbing frames for older children, a sand pit and a paddling pool. We often meet friends there for a picnic, a play and to feed the ducks. It is lovely to walk the ‘measured mile’ path around the park which makes you feel like you’ve done some exercise because you know how far you have walked! There is a cafe where you can get an ice cream or a tea and cake and there is also a payable funfair, crazy golf and boat hire. Recommended by Chantal from Warwick Also recommended by Cathy.

Jephson Gardens in Leamington Spa Jephson Gardens is a beautiful, relaxing park with lots of space for impromptu picnics and the temperate house which is free to enter is always a hit with our 5 month old who loves looking at trees. It is only small but just enough to keep a baby/ toddler’s attention, especially currently with its colourful paper mâché jungle animals on display amongst the greenery. The water feature also has koi carp to keep little eyes entertained for a few minutes! Attached is ‘The Restaurant in The Park’ which is very child friendly and a regular meeting place for new mums. It has great cake! Recommended by Jodi Varney & Miles (5months) from Leamington Spa Also recommended by Sharon

Red Road Plant Centre in Kineton I would love to recommend this Pick Your Own Fruit place! We went with our 8 month-old daughter over Summer and picked Strawberries, Tayberries, Gooseberries, Red Currants, Black Currants and Raspberries. During Autumn, you can pick Apples, Corn and much more. There is no entry fee - all you pay for is the fruit you have picked. During our visit, the price for Strawberries was cheaper than other places and they allow visitors to have a taste of their fruit (though not to have a feast!) Moreover, this place is not packed with visitors - you can enjoy picking fruit at a leisurely pace without having to worry that the good fruit is running out. You could even bring your own summer chair to have a rest and let your children pick the fruit and enjoy their day! Recommended by Tika Jamaludin from Leamington Hilltop Farm at Hunningham This is a farm shop and restaurant with a lovely play area and chickens, sheep and pigs to look at - sometimes a couple of ponies too. We find it a lovely, relaxing place to go. You just pay for your food so can be as cheap or expensive as you like. They are very child friendly and their customer service is excellent. Recommended by Val, Jacob (3) & Thomas (5 m)

And just round the corner... The canal walk between Tesco and Lidl in central Leamington Spa is particularly lovely to walk along as you have the wildlife, ducks and swans and moor hens, sheep in the fields and canal boats and if you cross over the railway bridge just before you get to Lidl, you might be lucky to see a train and receive a wave and toot!! Also on that particular stretch of canal there are some Alpacas and when they are grazing you can clearly see them from the opposite side of the canal. Enjoy! Radford Rascals Group This mums & tots group runs in the hall next to the small church in Lewis Road, Radford Semele on Tuesdays, 10 - 11.30 during term time. It’s a drop in group for babies up to pre-school age where they can play with lots of toys and enjoy a planned activity each week. It’s a nice group and it only costs a £1 to attend and this includes refreshments for the little ones and their carer. Recommended by Sharon from Radford Semele

Editor’s Children’s Centres Across Choice Warwick There are a number of Children’s Centres in Warwick, all of which run lots of different courses, groups and support networks which are mostly free. These include music groups, baby massage, chatter matters, baby life-saving courses and general groups for parents and children to get together to talk, play or get the support they need. The staff are always very friendly and supportive and we have gained a lot from the variety of groups we’ve attended to date - they’ve provided us with an excellent basis to move on to explore wider activities now Archie is older. I feel particularly fortunate that all of this is available to us on our doorstep free of charge as I know this isn’t the case everywhere. Recommended by Cathy & Archie (4 m) Visit the articles page on the Toddle About website to read even more recommendations!

Planning The Perfect Party

By Jodie Singh

Everyone wants their child’s party to be an occasion to remember, whether it’s their birthday party, Christening, Halloween or Christmas celebration. Yet although it’s a special time, the run-up and organisation for the party can often be very stressful. So here are some handy hints and tips from party expert Jodie Singh to help take some of that stress away!

1 2 3 4 5 6

Firstly, decide on a budget and then try to stick to it. It is really easy to get carried away and before you know it you have spent a fortune! Research the party venues in your area. Prices can vary considerably and it is important that the venue fulfils your requirements. Alternatively, you could hold the party in your own home, garden or maybe a local park (providing the weather allows). Choose a theme for the party. Princesses, pirates, teddy bears and jungle animals are just a few examples. The theme can then be included in things like invitations, plates, cups, decorations, party bags etc. Decide on what food you will serve - You could make this yourself or enlist the help of others. If you are travelling to the venue try to keep it simple so that it can be easily transported. Don’t forget the candles for the cake. Choose what entertainment you will provide. Young children like to be kept busy so try to have some toys and activities for them to be involved in – alternatively you could hire some entertainment such as soft play equipment, a bouncy castle or an entertainer so you don’t need to worry about this at all. Have an outline plan of the party. Decide when the children will eat, when you’ll play games, cut the cake etc. Don’t expect to be able to stick to the plan entirely but at least you can make sure you have time for everything.

Don’t Forget! Blu Tac – many venues will not let you use draw-

ing pins or tape to put up decorations, but it is best to check first.

Black Bin Bags – one thing is certain, there will

be lots of rubbish! Some venues prefer you to take your rubbish home with you.

Camera – take your own but it is also a good idea

to put somebody in charge of taking photos so that they can capture the moments that you may miss.

Cd Player – just in case you want some background music or fun party games and dancing! Jodie Singh runs Little Dragon Parties who specialise in soft play equipment for under 4s and take all the stress out of party organisation. Contact Jodie on 07841644929 or visit www.littledragonparties.co.uk.

C

The Toy Debate

sy er ov r tr ne on or C

By Laura Wingfield

If you step into any toy shop today you are likely to be met with a plethora of choices to entertain your growing child with. From brightly flashing, moving mobiles to snuggly lullaby playing teddies, the shelves are well stocked with products vying for your attention. Sometimes it can be hard to choose what to buy for your little ones, and with Christmas looming on the horizon it won’t be long before toy companies start bringing out ‘the next big thing’ and competing for your hard earned cash. It hasn’t always been this way. Your parents, grandparents and ancestors before them would have been amused as children by far simpler toys. You probably played with them when you were growing up too: building blocks, skipping ropes, wooden train sets, spinning tops... you remember? And there are a growing number of people who believe that these more traditional toys are far better for our children than their modern counterparts. But are traditional toys really all they are cracked up to be? Is there really anything wrong with modern toys?

The Case for Modern Toys Modern Toys Can Introduce New Concepts Many modern toys come with a whole new world of language to accompany them and can introduce children to new concepts. Children frequently become passionate about a certain toy or range of toys and this filters into their day to day discussions and ideas. It is always good to support our children’s passions and often during conversations about their favourite play things we can hear their take on the world and observe the learning that is taking place. Modern Toys Teach Cause and Effect Many children’s toys come with lights and sounds which can be turned on by the push of a button, or lever. Children soon learn that if they play with a toy they can make things happen: an early learning experience of cause and effect. This teaches them that they can have an influence on their surroundings, which also ultimately boosts their self esteem. Modern Toys Promote Development of Motor Skills Many moving toys for young children encourage their owner to crawl or walk to chase after them. It is very exciting for a newly mobile baby to follow a toy across the room and we all know that it’s good for babies and children to be active. Modern toys can aid baby’s first forays into mobility by providing something to aim for and could be just the challenge needed to inspire a little one to take their first few steps. Modern Toys Encourage Independence Many modern toys are designed to be played with solo. This means that the child is amused and can play with the toy independently, allowing Mum or Dad a bit more freedom to get on with cooking the

dinner or any of the million other jobs that need doing in a day. This can be really useful for today’s busy families and reduce some of the pre-dinner battles that can occur at that fraught time of the day. Modern Toys are Fun Let’s face it, modern toys often look exciting and interesting. As a society we love our gadgets - our mp3 players, phones and games consoles - and many people think children are no different. Things that light up and move and make funny noises appear thrilling to little children. Whether you like the ‘lights, sounds, action!’ approach or not, these toys certainly get their attention! Modern Toys are... Modern! The world these days is a changed place, even from when we were children, and technology is developing rapidly. Why should we not take advantage of these new advances? Many people believe that introducing children to technology when they are young will prepare them for the world they are growing up in and give them a good early start helping them make the most of opportunities in later life without being left behind by their peers.

The Case for Traditional Toys

Traditional Toys Stimulate the Imagination “A good toy is 10% toy and 90% child,” said Joan Almon, director of the US Alliance for Childhood and many parents agree with her. Traditional toys are simple, and simple things are often the best. They allow for open-ended play and encourage children to use their imaginations. The work is not done for them and in this way they encourage problem solving and creative play. This is a skill that will, in time, help children to become more independent and be able to entertain themselves, as well as encouraging them to be active learners and not just sit waiting for the next bit of stimulation to appear. Traditional Toys Are Flexible and Sociable A lot of traditional toys can be played just as easily in a group of children, encouraging sharing and cooperation, as they can on their own. Wooden building blocks or train sets are just as much fun to play with, either on your own or with a friend. The imaginative games created using dollies or a few wooden animals can be enjoyed in limitless ways. They are very flexible. They also encourage movement, as anyone who has seen a child building the world’s hugest tower knows! Traditional Toys are Durable and Timeless Although some traditional toys can appear expensive at first glance, they are actually far more durable than today’s plastic toys. They are less likely to break, don’t have batteries which will run out or motors or circuitry which can fail, and are generally expected to last a lifetime, or more. Many can actually be heirloom quality and will be handed down through the generations. There is something appealing about the idea of much loved blocks or wooden figures being handed down to our children’s children. Also, due to their simple nature, there are endless play possibilities with

many traditional toys and therefore you need less and you really do get your money’s worth. Traditional Toys are Safer Traditional toys are usually made out of natural materials such as wood and natural fabrics. They are far less likely to contain toxic chemicals or sharp edges which is far more common in mass produced modern toys. There are many product recalls each year over safety. Traditional Toys are often Hand Crafted and Ethical In a world where big business rules the roost, it is nice to support the smaller companies or the individuals. You can buy toys made in fairtrade projects, or in small ethically run factories. It is possible to buy unique and beautiful toys that are handmade with care and in doing so support other families like yourselves. There are Mums, Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas out there who are making truly wonderful toys (and a whole range of other things) and it feels great to be giving money direct to them rather than to a big corporation. You can find lovely handmade toys at www.etsy.com, www.folksy.com, and www.misi.co.uk. Traditional Toys are Visually Appealing Many modern toys are simply irritating! There are only so many times a parent can look at the flashy light pattern or hear the same song or noise before wanting to accidentally ‘lose’ the batteries to certain toys. Some of them end up causing frustration and are embarrassing to take with you in public or on a busy bus. Traditional toys are quieter and more pleasing to look at. Many are beautiful and you can be sure they won’t cause irritation. A growing number of people believe being surrounded by beautiful things is the best way to nurture children.

This article presents a fairly black and white argument for and against modern and traditional toys. But in reality there are many shades of grey. There is space in any home for both traditional wooden blocks and modern lego, for traditional wooden farm animals and modern playmobil. There is no need to choose between the two. However, it is good to be aware that you can buy all the traditional toys that you might want for your child. There are many independent toy shops and a whole range of choices exist online, with toys that may tickle your imagination as much as your child’s. So why not explore some different toy shops before choosing what to buy this holiday season? Happy shopping! Successful Sleeping Away

If you’re staying away from home this Christmas (or any time of the year for that matter), you’re going to want your little darlings to settle to sleep with the minimum of fuss to give you a few hours of peace and quiet at the end of the day. Who knows, Santa may even need the extra wrapping time! Achieving a routine that works at home can be hard enough, without everything being disrupted by new surroundings, not to mention having the most exciting day of the year just round the corner. Years of staying away with little ones in campsites and hotel rooms has given Amy Jenkins some valuable experience in this arena, and moved her to set up Toddle Off, an online store dedicated to supplying all the amazing gadgets and doodahs that she’s discovered along the way that making staying away with children a doddle. So we asked her to put together a few tips and recommendations to help you enjoy your time away from home this Christmas, and hopefully give you the chance to put your feet up and relax.

Routine Even if the environment is different, try to keep as much of your usual ‘at home’ routine as possible. Try to put your child to bed at the same time as home, don’t be tempted to keep them up, as an overtired baby will struggle to settle.

Bath time Bath time can be a great way of relaxing little ones and giving them the hint that it is time to sleep.

Travel baby baths can be a lot of fun and can be used in a shower. When camping I’ve even warmed water in a kettle and given my little boy a bath in the middle of the field with our Flexibath!

Familiar sounds Even if the surroundings are different, a sound that plays at bedtime

at home can work wonders to soothe and relax an unsettled baby. I have used a sleep sheep since my little boy was tiny. It is a cuddly toy that plays a heartbeat and other relaxing sounds. These days I just take out the bit that plays the noise and leave the rest at home when we want to travel light. Lullaby music or white noise on your smart phone or on a baby monitor can also work well.

Tasty Treats For The Tree!

Christmas is a great time for cooking, so why not get the kids involved. Anna Oliver from Crafty Cooks has given us the recipe for these tasty Stained Glass Biscuits. Not only are they delicious but they will also look lovely hanging from the tree.

Ingredients 50g/2oz sugar 75g/3oz butter 100g/4oz Plain flour 2tsp orange juice Boiled sweets This recipe comes from Anna Oliver, the founder and owner of Crafty Cooks, the national kids’ cooking classes company. Find out about starting a Craft Cooks franchise at craftycooks.co.uk Voucher in centre pages.

22

1. Cut the butter into chunks and add to the flour in your mixing bowl. 2. Using your fingers ‘squidge’ together the ingredients and stir in the sugar. 3. Add the orange juice and using your hands mix it up until you have a nice ball of dough. If it’s too dry just add a bit more juice, too wet and ad a bit of extra flour.

4. Roll out the dough until it is about 1cm thick and cut out large shapes. 5. From the large shapes cut out a smaller hole in the centre, a bottle lid is

good for this, place on a baking tray (it is best to use greased proof paper or Teflon for these) and place a boiled sweet inside the hole. The hole must be slightly bigger than the sweet as it will spread when cooked to fill the area

6. If you’d like to hang them from the tree add a hole at the top to attach the ribbon.

7. Cook at 190 C / 375 F for 12 – 15 minutes. Leave to cool completely before o

o

moving to allow the sweets to reset.

Taking your own bedding or sleeping bag can help to make the travel cot smell more like home.

Favourite toys and books A bedtime story is another really good cue that it is time for sleep. Also, when you leave the room and say good night, it is nice to leave your little ones with a favourite toy.

Black out blinds Darkness is a pretty good signal to little ones that it is time to sleep! There are lots of black out blinds out there and we’ve tried a few. We favour the Lights Out Black Out Blind. It is compact when packed away and covers a variety of different window shapes and sizes. It attaches with just one sucker so it is really quick to put up. We also like the Magic Blackout Blinds because they are so compact. If you can’t black out the entire room, there are clever designs out there for just your travel cot.

Travel sleeping bags If you go out for the evening with your baby the last thing you want to do once you have settled them to sleep is wake them back up again! Getting a sleeping baby from a travel cot into a car seat and then into their cot at home can seem like a military operation! We’ve discovered the Slumbersac which has pockets that let you pass the

straps through the sleeping bag, making the whole experience a lot easier.

Travel cot Choosing the right travel cot can really help make bed time less stressful for mum and dad. You need to have a really good think about which style is best for you – the traditional rectangular style or a tent style. Whichever you choose, it needs to be easy to put up.

Bed guards If your little one is old enough to sleep in a single bed it can really reduce the amount you have to pack. There are different types of travel bed guards, from a traditional metal frame to foam bumpers and inflatable tubes. All of which help to keep your little one secure in bed while they sleep.

Daytime naps Even though it sounds counterintuitive, a good daytime nap can help your little ones to sleep at night by preventing them from getting overtired. Just make sure that the nap isn’t too late in the afternoon otherwise they won’t be ready to sleep at bedtime. When you are out and about there can be lots of distractions to prevent babies from nodding off. We have found that pushchair black outs are brilliant for reducing these and also offer sun protection.

Christmas Times A Poem

I remember that first Christmas morn, A few short weeks after you were born. Tiny small, like a delicate toy, My perfect, wondrous, bundle of joy. The next Christmas you began to talk, And soon after you started to walk. Smiling and laughing and having fun, Quiet nights and days they were all done. By the Christmas when you had turned three, It was all about gifts: Santa was key. We had made cake and puddings and pies, Snow fell, and you watched with wondrous eyes. Then you were four, and then you were five, And the magic of Christmas came alive. You loved the smells, the sounds, the lights, Even those dark cold wint’ry nights. This Christmas is another year on, I’m hoping the allure is not yet gone. But as your excitement builds for the day, I grin: I know: the magic’s here to stay. This Christmas always remember the magical times with a truly unique gift from Handprintz: their tiny hand or foot print miniaturised and stamped into a piece of beautiful silver jewellery that you can wear and treasure forever. For more details go to www.handprintz.co.uk or call 01582 833903.

S

Finally, things are different away from home and that’s half the fun! Sometimes no matter what we do, it just doesn’t work for us so I give up and let the little monkey stay up for a bit longer!

Pregnancy Pages

Discover The Warwickshire Pregnancy & Birth Network It started over a cup of coffee, as good things often do.. A couple of years ago, a few of us women - all working around the Leamington Spa area of Warwickshire in the field of complementary health and with a special focus on pregnancy, birth and babies - started to talk to each other about working together. Our fields of work cover specialisms such as homeopathy, massage, acupuncture, yoga, osteopathy, hypnotherapy, independent midwifery, NLP, counselling, reflexology... just to mention a few! We realised that between us we had a lot of expertise and that if we came together we could really help to improve things for pregnant and new mums. So that’s what we did! We created the Warwickshire Pregnancy and Birth Network with our strapline Love your body, your birth, your baby which reflects the way we would like women to feel both during and after pregnancy. The network extends the choices available to pregnant women and new mothers by signposting them to a whole range of therapies and services which can really make a difference, as a comple-

ment to those already offered by public health professionals. The area covered by the network is now expanding into all corners of Warwickshire, as well as Coventry. So what are the benefits of this Network? • Pregnant and new mums can now easily find out about therapists and support services on offer to them locally and gain all the benefits they offer. • The midwives and other health professionals know what other forms of support are on offer so can refer women to the Network • As Network members, we can more effectively promote what we do and have a unique opportunity to learn from other professions who all share a focus on the wellbeing of mums and babies. You can see all the services on offer from the Network at www.pregnancyandbirthnetwork.co.uk.

Aqua Tums Classes

New Aqua Yoga Classes for Pregnancy in Kenilworth Aqua Yoga is a wonderful new way to relax, stretch, tone and get ready for birth. Water is an environment familiar from before birth, as babies grow in amniotic fluid and it is of course the source of life. It provides a calming environment and an ideal medium for yoga, allowing stretching in tune with your body. A typical class lasts 45 minutes and in that time you will experience a series of harmonizing exercises and sequences of safe yoga postures for your stage of pregnancy. You can start at any stage and continue right up until your due date and even beyond! These exercises are also safe for postnatal mums and baby is welcome to come and sit in a car seat on the side with our pool side assistant. If you can swim we will show you our yoga adapted stroke, to increase your enjoyment and benefits of your exercise, but don’t worry if you can’t as we have many other exercise practices for you. At the end of each class you will experience a true sense of relaxation through our yoga floating practices, which create access to an anxiety-free state of harmony with the surrounding world. Jo is fully qualified and insured as a Diploma holder in Aqua Yoga and set up Aqua Tums after feeling the benefits of pregnancy yoga on dry land and enjoying the aqua fitness sessions at her local pool. It is an exciting venture as no one in the area combines the two together in this unique way. New classes are due to start in October at Chesford Grange, Kenilworth on Thursday lunchtimes at 1212.45pm. Limited spaces are available, so early booking is advisable. For more information call Jo on 07968 015292 or visit www.littlesplashers.co.uk.

The Warwickshire Baby & Toddler Show Sunday 20th November 2011 at The Ricoh Arena, Coventry

Here at Toddle About we are proud to be sponsoring The Warwickshire Baby & Toddler Show that is coming to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry this November. Just in time for some Christmas Shopping! We asked organiser Annabel what makes her Baby & Toddler Shows different. When I was pregnant with Lottie, now 4, I had no real idea what support, services or activities were available locally – not to mention which products would really make a difference. And as she grew, every new milestone brought new questions for me – the learning curve never seemed to flatten out! Of course, with hindsight it was all much more obvious and I decided to start our Baby Shows to help other mums before the benefits of hindsight kicked in. From the start, we wanted our Baby Shows to be different and fun for both exhibitors and visitors. First and foremost we wanted them to have a local focus - a chance for local businesses to connect with local people and for parents to find out about all the great new products, help and advice available to them in their area. All our events are easy to attend, with plenty of parking, places to sit down, lots of nappy changing

facilities, private areas to feed, high chairs and of course lots to keep the little ones happy. As well as shopping opportunities – a lot of which will be at special show prices - we have lined up some great activities and workshops for the Ricoh Arena. The line-up includes Gary Good’s Marvellous Magic Show, First Aid from the British Red Cross, baby massage demonstrations, bra fittings from Butterfly Bras, children’s music classes, face painting and bouncy castle fun, to name a just a few! Tickets are just £5 on the door for a single ticket or £8 for a family (admitting 2 adults), or £3.50 and £6 when booked in advance on 0845 519 2765 or online at from www.warwickshirebabyshow.co.uk. Toddle About readers can also get an extra 10% off with code TODDLE! The first 350 tickets purchased will receive a goody bag full of special offers, samples and a lovely gift from Jo Jo Maman Bebe, so the key is to definitely to book your ticket early! Keep an eye on the Toddle About Facebook page for your chance to win some free tickets.
