Leisure Centres Under New Management

Leisure operator Everyone Active is now working in partnership with Warwick District Council to manage sports and leisure centres across the Warwick District. Ice Painting Your little one will have a great time painting and exploring with these ice paint sticks. They can make some really striking watery patterns! YOU WILL NEED A FEW ITEMS: • Small pots (e.g. yoghurt pots) • Food colouring (we used wilton gel food colouring) • Water • Craft sticks • Card or paper 1. To make the ice paint sticks, fill the small pots with water and then mix in a tiny bit of gel food colouring. 2. Put a craft stick into each pot and then put them in the freezer. The ice paints will take a couple of hours to freeze.

3. Once the ice has frozen take the ice paints out of the pots and you are ready to get painting. I would recommend painting on card or thick paper. Hand the ice paint sticks to your child and let them have fun exploring the different painty effects that they can create. As these paints are made from just water and colouring they are perfectly safe for babies and toddlers to use and even put in their mouths, though food colouring can stain clothes and (temporarily) skin.

When you discover you’re pregnant, the list of things you can no longer do just seems to grow. While each pregnancy, expectant mother and unborn child is different, the experts at Emma’s Diary have busted ten of the most frequently asked – and some unusual – pregnancy myths.

1. Can I fly?

4. Can I wear under-wired bras?

It’s usually safe to fly while you’re pregnant. However, some airlines won’t let you fly after week 28 of your pregnancy, so it’s always best to check what your airline’s policy is. If you’re travelling for more than five hours, there’s a higher risk of thrombosis, but it’s not clear if this increases if you’re pregnant.

While there are no hard and fast rules regarding underwired bras, healthcare professionals generally advise pregnant women to avoid them. This is because your breasts change at such a fast rate, there’s a danger the bra might restrict their shape and cause damage. At worst, it can obstruct the increased blood flow and compress the developing milk ducts, which can lead to discomfort, cysts and, in some cases, mastitis.

2. Can I have a hot bath? It’s best to avoid very hot baths due to the risks of overheating and fainting. Becoming too hot can harm your unborn baby, particularly in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. Always make sure you drink plenty of fluids.

3. Can I still exercise? It’s important to stay active during your pregnancy, as it will help you to adapt to your changing body shape, cope with labour better and get back into shape after birth.

5. Can I still have sex?

Keep up your normal daily physical activity or exercise, such as going to the gym, swimming or walking, for as long as you feel comfortable. If you plan to start a new exercise regime, always check with your midwife first. Don’t get too hot and drink plenty of fluids throughout. Avoid contact sports and anything where you might fall, for example horse riding, gymnastics or cycling. Be aware that when you lie flat on your back after 16 weeks, the weight of the bump can press on the big blood vessels, which can affect the blood flow to the placenta and your baby. It’s very important to have adequate support from the very start of your pregnancy, otherwise there’s a danger your breasts could lose their shape permanently. A good maternity bra should have wide shoulder straps, support panels and adjustable fastenings to accommodate your increasing size. Many retailers offer a free fitting service so make regular checks to ensure that your bra is the correct size for your changing shape.

There’s no medical evidence to suggest that having sex during pregnancy does any harm to the baby. Remember, your baby is well cushioned by a sac of fluid well beyond the neck of the womb. In fact, a loving, physical relationship is important for your wellbeing during pregnancy and sex can help your body prepare for labour. Don’t worry if you notice mild contractions during and after sex, as they won’t be powerful enough to start labour if your body is not ready – and if it is ready, sex can help to start labour. You may be advised to abstain from intercourse at certain stages of pregnancy if you have a history of miscarriage or premature labour, or if you have a lowlying placenta.

6. Can I sleep on my back? Although it’s safe to sleep on your back during the first trimester, it’s a good idea to get used to sleeping on your side. This is because, as the uterus gets heavier, it presses on the vein that returns blood from your lower body to your heart when you lie on your back. If you do this for an extended period, there’s a danger that it could affect the flow of blood and nutrients to the placenta. If you do wake and find yourself on your back, don’t panic. It shouldn’t have any serious adverse effect on your baby. Try placing cushions between your thighs, along your back and under your bump to make the sleeping position more comfortable.

7. Can I use a mobile phone? It can’t be said for certain the effect using a mobile phone might have on your unborn child, so it might be best to err on the side of caution. Two related studies have linked babies exposed to mobile phones in the womb with behavioural problems, such as hyperactivity, during childhood, however, there is still not enough proof of mobile phone use directly causing this.

8. Can I take ibuprofen? Most medicines can affect the development of a baby in the womb, depending on the different types and the stage of pregnancy that you have reached when you take it, and you should always consult your GP or midwife before taking any medicine while pregnant. Ibuprofen is classed as a non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) and some studies have suggested a possible association between the use of NSAIDs in early pregnancy and a low risk of certain birth defects. Taking NSAIDs in the last trimester of pregnancy is where the most risk appears to be. The greatest concern is that it may cause the premature closure of a vessel in the baby’s heart, which may lead to pulmonary hypertension in the baby’s lungs. The use of ibuprofen in late pregnancy may also inhibit labour and cause reduced amounts of amniotic fluid. For these reasons, unless you have been prescribed an NSAID by your GP then it’s best to avoid this group of medicines.

9. Can I eat spicy food? Don’t worry, you don’t have to give up your favourite Friday night takeaway just because you’re pregnant. However, some women are prone to heartburn when pregnant and spicy foods can aggravate this. The key is to stick to a healthy and varied diet.

10. Can I change the cat litter? The answer is ‘no’, as cat litter and cat faeces can contain a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis infection. If you get toxoplasmosis for the first time when you’re pregnant, or up to three months before you conceive, the infection can be passed to and damage your unborn baby, or can even cause miscarriage or stillbirth. To be safe, try to avoid emptying cat litter trays (get someone else to do it) or wear disposable gloves if you have to empty it yourself. Make sure the cat litter is changed every day. Wash all fruit, vegetables and salads (including readyprepared salads) thoroughly, to remove all traces of soil. You should also wear gloves when gardening in case the soil has cat faeces in it, and wash your hands and gloves afterwards. Also, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling cats and avoid sick cats. Other places the parasite can be found are in undercooked or raw meat, raw cured meat – such as salami or Parma ham – and unpasteurised goats’ milk. Sheep can also carry the parasite. Most people infected with toxoplasmosis have no symptoms and don’t know that they’re infected. Contact your GP or midwife immediately if you think that you may have come into contact with the toxoplasma parasite. The contents of this article do not constitute medical advice. New Birthing Unit at Warwick Hospital South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust is excited to announce that a new midwifery led birthing unit is going to be developed on site at Warwick Hospital. The Trust, that currently offers a Consultant Obstetric Unit at the hospital and community home birthing teams, are expanding their maternity services to offer women more choice on where to deliver their babies. Due to open in early 2018, the dedicated Midwifery Led Unit will offer expectant parents the opportunity to have their babies in a comfortable, homely environment, rather than a more clinical setting. As the only facility like this in the area it will benefit families across South Warwickshire and beyond. With its own separate entrance, the new unit will have four birthing rooms, with birthing pools available in all of them. To help create a welcoming and calming environment there will also be separate rooms for parents to relax in, as well as a private garden.

As part of this development a new fundraising appeal to raise £200,000 has been launched. The Birth and Babies appeal will help make the birthing unit the best it can be. The Trust will be funding the build, however NHS funds only go as far as functional materials and equipment. The additional money will be invested into special enhancements that will make the facility fabulous for women and their families. USING THE PRINCIPLES OF PLAY THERAPY

Play is a natural process that is essential for the development of a child’s brain and mind. Without the stimulus of play, the physical size of the brain will be much smaller, as shown in research undertaken with Romanian orphans.

The summer provides excellent opportunities for play - at home, by the sea and in the country. Let your children choose what they want to do (but no more than an hour’s screen time a day!) Play with them if they want you to but let them lead - they should design the sand castle, not you.

20% of children in the UK suffer from emotional, behaviour or mental health problems. Play Therapy has been shown to have a success rate of between 77% and 84% when delivered by Play Therapy UK’s registrants.

Otherwise watch them to show that you are really interested in what they are doing. If they are happy digging a big hole in the sand for a couple hours, rather than playing a game you like, don’t lose interest or try to distract them.

But play is good for ALL children, and parents can follow the principles of non-directive play to maintain the good mental health of children who do not have any mental health problems. Neurobiology tells us that beneficial chemicals such as opioids and oxitocin are released naturally as a result of play. The amygdala is calmed and the hippocampus, which enables us to learn and recall memories, is repaired.

Lynne Newbould runs the Little Kickers franchise for Northampton and Rugby with her husband Antony. They were recently ranked as the No. 7 Little Kickers franchise in the world and 4th in the UK, with over 500 children attending their classes every week. Lynne gives us an insight into her journey as a self-employed mother of two. 1) Why did you decide to work for yourself?

2) How did you choose what to do? As a parent I used to take our daughter to various classes and activities. At our music class one day, I realised she was the only child running around the outside of the hall, whilst everyone else was engaged in the activity. It prompted me to try and find an active class, one where she could run and use up all that excess energy. Both myself and Antony have a sports and business management background and are huge football fans, so Little Kickers seemed a great option for all.

When our daughter was 2 years old, we had the usual juggle of work and childcare. Antony was working away/ overnight often, and we wanted to find work that would be flexible and fit around children. Working for myself seemed to tick all the boxes.

3) HOW DO YOU JUGGLE BEING A MUM AND A BUSINESS OWNER? Some days well, other days it can be a challenge. Working from home has positives and negatives. The phone rings all times including weekends and early mornings; emails are constant and we need to reply within 24 hours – so the office is never officially closed. We often discuss work over the dinner table, whilst walking the dog, on the school run. The children are very accepting that ‘mummy is working’ means quiet time. On a positive, I can drop into school assemblies at short notice and both of us are home for breakfast/bedtimes every day.

4) WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING SELF-EMPLOYED? The greatest outcome is being able to show our children that work effort = success. They are able to see us enjoying our work and taking pride in what we do. It is definitely a family business - the children help out! They attend classes and help sort equipment.

5) What are the worst bits about it? Initially when it was just me at home, it could be quite isolating. Sometimes I wished for another adult to ‘bounce ideas off’. Thankfully the dog provided some good conversation in those early years!

6) What would you do differently if you had your time again? Nothing! Setting up Little Kickers has been the best decision. It has enabled us to completely change our family set-up. 5 years ago (when our son was born) we opted to run the business together and Antony gave up his full-time job. We are now both 50:50 in the business and also jointly there for the children.

7) What advice would you give to mums thinking about starting their own business? Make sure you have a support network. Being a franchise business, we have great support from the Little Kickers head office and other franchisees. Be prepared for small setbacks, learn from early mistakes and make decisions based on what is best for you.
