Chatty Children WAYS TO ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT EARLY COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE. There is so much more to communication than just words. To become good communicators children have to focus, listen, remember, understand, select words, speak clearly, use body language and take turns!

It’s no wonder it takes time to master and that some children find it complicated. Children have an innate need to communicate and babies seek out company and familiar voices from a very young age. However, learning language doesn’t just ‘happen’ and there are many ways we can make subtle adjustments to the way we talk to give children a step up. Simple language techniques are easy to learn and effective for all children. They involve making small changes to the way you interact with your child, but can make a huge impact on their development. Here are a few techniques you can try…

Provide a Commentary Make the most of your time together by turning off any background noise so they can focus on you. Let them choose a toy, follow their lead and tell them about the items they are holding – keep your language slow, simple, child-like, clear and repetitive. You can give a running commentary of what they are doing, for example, “Car, small car… car is moving… up ramp… car up, up, up… car down, down the ramp.” This repetition is very important; children need to hear a word over and over again before they understand it and even more times if they are going to attempt it themselves!

Get Down on Their Level You can increase the quality of interactions, and the chances for eye contact, by moving your whole body so you are at the same level and face-to-face with your child. This gives them the best opportunity to copy you and puts you in the best position to encourage and support them. Make sure you choose a time when they are not tired or hungry! Praise any attempts at eye contact and speech with enthusiasm and encouragement.

Repeat What They Say Once your child starts to use words, irrespective of pronunciation, show you understand by repeating the word correctly. You can help by adding another word, for example if they say “cat” you can repeat it and say, “Yes, black cat”. This technique can be applied to any level of development, to encourage 3, 4 or 5 word sentences, or to encourage an older child to use adjectives. These techniques (plus others), combined with baby sign, can give development a real boost for all children. I still hear parents, and even Health Visitors, explain a child’s speech by saying, ‘He’s a lazy boy,’ or ‘Her older sister does all the talking for her’ - these techniques can shatter these old, untrue myths. Give the techniques a try; I was so impressed with the effect on my son that I was inspired to create baby and toddler classes incorporating them.

I thoroughly enjoy being a stay at home father. I love dedicating quality time to my kids, nurturing them and teaching them the skills they will need when they face the world on their own. I feel blessed to spend so much time with my kids. Very few men get to spend as much time with their children as I do. It’s sad, but a harsh reality of society and the world we live in. I gave up a career in communications and public relations to look after our daughter back in 2011. It was very much a practical decision. Helen was attending nursery full-time and we lived in a state of constant domestic chaos as both my wife and I worked full time. The house was in a dreadful state Monday to Friday and the weekends were generally spent putting it back together and preparing for the week ahead. Both Gill and I felt Helen should have more parental attention. We were also fed up with the domestic chaos. I wasn’t hugely happy in my job and my wife had greater earning potential. I suggested to Gill that

I give up my job to run the household and reduce Helen’s nursery hours. At first, Gill wasn’t sure of the wisdom of this move, but she quickly came around to the idea and we haven’t looked back. We’ve subsequently had Izzy, our second daughter. Gill will freely admit she couldn’t be a stay at home parent. She is career-minded and doing things our way has given her the freedom to concentrate on her work. That said, being a stay at home dad isn’t easy. The parenting world, especially the early years, are incredibly mother-centric.

The hardest part is the social isolation. Although an issue for mums, guys in my position face some particular challenges. I’ve had women tell me on numerous occasions that they regularly meet with other mums for coffee and a chat. Although they may know of stay at home dads who attend baby and toddler groups etc.,

they just don’t think to invite them. You can see how this happens. Following the birth of a child, mums often socialise with other mums from their anti-natal groups. As their children develop and get older, the mums move on to playgroups and form strong friendship bonds, their children often socialising together as well. When a man is parachuted into these strong friendship groups that have developed over the course of two or three years, well, he gets ignored! Worse still, his children can be ignored too. That’s just one of the difficulties us stay at home dads face. Another can be the attitudes of medical professionals. I have learned that when I take the kids to see a doctor I have to tell them straight away that I am a stay at home dad and their main carer. Once I have established the ground rules, I get treated well. On the occasions I have failed to do this, I have been treated very differently and not in a good way. Being a stay at home dad is tough, just as it is being a stay at home mum. It can be isolating and society still hasn’t caught up with the idea that men can do childcare. Even so, I love being a stay at home dad. I wouldn’t want things any other way.

PRESENCE - THE KEY TO HEALING CHILDREN’S EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS Parents can learn from Play Therapists

At the very heart of Play Therapists’ work is the belief that our clients have a natural biological tendency towards healing, health and well-being – not just physically but psychologically as well. The power to change resides within the child and is not mainly a result of direction, advice or information that a practitioner or parent might have to offer. The therapist’s role is to provide the best conditions for clients to be able to heal themselves. Parents can do this as well. Most important of all is to establish an empathetic therapeutic relationship between client and therapist. Although parents should not be therapists to their own children, they can apply some of their principles. Play Therapists trained to Play Therapy UK standards use Axline’s principles of non-directive play therapy, where the child chooses what they want to play with. The therapist then communicates with the child using the ‘medium’ they have chosen, such as drawing, sand tray worlds, clay, music, puppets etc.

But how do therapists share their true selves with their clients while remaining non-directive and maintaining the boundaries of a healthy therapeutic relationship? This is achieved through the state of being present in the room. This includes bringing one’s whole self into the engagement with clients by being completely in the moment on multiple levels: physically, emotionally, cognitively and spiritually. Being fully immersed in the moment, without judgment or expectation - being with and for the client.

The therapist is totally open to the client, while also remaining separate and aware of their own thoughts and feelings. Parents can engage in a similar relationship with their children by letting them choose how they want to play and being fully with them when playing and focusing closely upon them. Try it and see what a difference it makes. When present, we are sensitively attuned to what is being said, both verbally and through bodily expression, as well as being attuned with ourselves.

Are you Feeding Your Toddler

Too much? ’s nutrition By Judy More, Paediatric Dietitian & Nutritionist specialising in children

Recent research reveals that some UK parents are overfeeding their 1-4 year olds with 1 in 10 parents giving their pre-schoolers near adult size portions. With the latest figures showing that one in five children are overweight or obese by the time they start school(1), practical advice is urgently needed. PARENTS ARE PUTTING TOO MUCH ON THE PlATE The research of 1000 UK mums and dads revealed that 79%* of parents routinely offer portions bigger than the recommended size range for pre-schoolers when serving popular meals (such as spaghetti bolognaise and chicken nuggets with chips), drinks and treats. The survey, which involved parents looking at images of portion sizes, also showed that more than 10% of parents usually serve their child close to an adult-size** portion of spaghetti bolognaise or cheese sandwiches. DID YOU KNOW? • A serving of Spaghetti Bolognese for a 1-4 year old should be 3-5 tablespoons • Crisps, sweets or sweet drinks should only be given once a week: : A bag of crisps is nearly twice the portion size a toddler should be eating : A small pack of jelly sweets is three times the recommended amount for a 1-4 year old

Only a quarter of parents say they feel ‘very confident’ about the amount of food they give their child, and younger parents (aged 18-24 years) are significantly less confident than older parents. Parents also seemed more concerned that their child was eating too little rather than too much with 73% expressing this as a worry. In contrast, only 25% of parents worry that their child might become overweight in the future. The

The National Child Measurement Programme (2014-15) showed that by the the age of 10-11 years, a third of children in England are overweight or obese, which suggests that more parents should worry about feeding their children too much, and fewer should worry about feeding them too little. The research also showed a tendency for parents to use food or drink between meals to comfort their children, with 36% of parents using this method to calm children down when they are upset. Using food or drink as a reward or to comfort or distract teaches young children to rely on food to deal with their emotions, and it often becomes a habit that they will continue in later life(3). The issue is, that when we feed our children larger portions, this forms an acceptance about what is an appropriate amount to eat and this becomes the ‘norm’. In other words, how much you offer often determines how much your child will eat - and habits learned in early life generally tend to persist as we get older.

The survey showed a significant lack of understanding about how much to feed toddlers. With new evidence linking large portion sizes to excess weight gain(4), its clear parents need practical advice NOW. To support parents, leading health and nutrition experts the Infant & Toddler Forum (ITF) have launched the innovative #rethinktoddlerportionsizes campaign, to encourage all families to rethink how much is on the plates of their young children.

The guide shows the recommended portion size ranges for children aged 1-4 and helps parents take the guesswork out of how much is enough. TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS 1. NO GRAZING Have a routine and offer 3 meals and 2-3 planned nutritious snacks e.g. fresh fruit, vegetable sticks, cheese cubes, oatcakes, breadsticks or crackers each day, rather than allow grazing. 2. AVOID REWARD ASSOCIATION Don’t use food or drink as a reward for eating other foods first, for good behaviour, a treat or comfort. Reward your toddler with your attention e.g. play, read or talk to your toddler 3. DISTRACT Distract your child with an alternative activity if they ask for food between their meals and planned snacks. 4. CUT DOWN ON MILK AFTER 12 MONTHS Limit milk drinks to 3-4oz (100-120mls) per day - toddlers need less milk than babies. 5. LET THEM SAY WHEN THEY ARE FULL You decide which nutritious foods to offer, but let your toddler decide how much to eat. Never insist your toddler eats everything on his or her plate. 6. LIMIT SWEETS AND CRISPS If given, limit sweets and crisps to one item once a week and decant a small amount into a little pot rather than giving your child the whole packet. 7. Egg Carton

Craft e e r T s a m t Chris An easy festive Christmas tree craft for little ones.

1. To begin you will want to take an egg carton and cut your pieces for the tree: a row of 3, a row with 2, and two single egg cartons. 2. Take your brown paint and paint the stump of your Christmas tree using a single egg carton that you cut out. 3. The rest of the egg cartons will be painted green.

4. After your paint has dried use the hot glue gun (adult only) or PVA glue and stick the egg cartons to a thick piece of card stock paper like the image below so that it looks like a tree. 5. And finally you can start decorating!
