A few months later, in January 2010, we launched the first edition of Toddle About. We received amazing feedback from parents and we've never looked back. Yes, it's been hard work, but I have been able to be there with the kids as they grew, and for that I am eternally grateful. This 10th Anniversary edition is extra special for us as it sees the launch of our new website (check it out!) and also the Toddle About Magazine franchise, which will allow other parents to do what we have done.

Practical techniques to help manage children’s worries Anxiety and worries are on the increase in young children and it’s reported that even those as young as 4 years old are starting to display signs of panic attacks. By using the following simple strategies from an early age parents can help their children manage feelings of anxiety and ensure they have tools to call on whenever they are worried or anxious.

1. And breathe… When we’re feeling anxious, our breathing becomes shallower and this can create the sensation that it’s a struggle to breathe. A common misconception is that the solution is to ‘take a nice deep breath’. In fact, doing the opposite – blowing the excess air out – helps to calm things down. Practice this with your children in advance of a problem to ensure they know what to do should feelings of panic strike. Toys and games can help children to do this and some examples are: • a hand-held windmill toy with sails • some bubble mixture to blow through a wand • blowing balloons • blowing bubbles in a drink through a straw • blow football • blow a feather from one side of the table to another • You can also ask your child to scrunch up their hand and simply imagine that they’re blowing up a balloon or paper bag – long, slow breathing out is what’s required.

2. Let’s pretend… Discuss situations such as a doctor’s visit in advance, rather than taking your child by surprise. From the age of two years, you can start using dolls, teddy bears and story-telling to help explain what the visit will entail. Take turns at playing ‘Doctors’ by giving a favourite teddy an injection or a dental examination. Older children might have a favourite TV character or super-hero and you could ask them to think about what they think this character would do if faced with the same challenging situation that they’re in at the moment.

3. Mindfulness made easy We often hear that living in the moment or ‘Mindfulness’ can reduce stress and greatly enhance the quality of our lives – it’s an excellent way of reducing your child’s feelings of anxiety. Young children are rarely still and quiet nowadays and it’s becoming harder for them to keep a lid on their emotions and think before they act. Achieving a state of complete silence, peace and calm is difficult for most children but a Mindfulness Jar is a useful way of teaching them how to be still: The mindfulness jar 1. Ask your child to fill an empty jar (the larger the better) almost to the brim with water and then tip in some glitter and close the lid tightly shut. 2. Vigorously shake the jar to spin the glitter pieces around and then sit calmly to watch the glitter pieces swirl around and eventually settle. 3. Count to see how long it takes – or use a stopwatch or clock and record the length of time in a notebook. Keeping a record will make it more interesting – next time will the pieces take longer to come to a complete standstill, or will it be quicker? This activity can also be used as a time-out exercise – so much better than the use of a ‘naughty step’!

PANCAKE DAY - TUESDAY 25 FEBRUARY

PINK PANCAKES

Delicious and healthy homemade pink pancakes that are perfect to make for breakfast this Pancake Day or indeed any day of the year if you love pink!

Ingredients:

• 175 g plain flour • 1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch) • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1 beetroot cooked, not in vinegar • 300 ml dairy-free milk (I used oat)

• 2 tbsp vegetable oil

- plus more for frying

• 1 tbsp maple syrup • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar • 1 tsp vanilla extract

1 Place all the ingredients in a blender and whizz until smooth.

4 Turn the pancake over with a spatula and repeat on the other side. Don’t be tempted to turn the heat up or your pancakes will turn brown.

SUITABLE FOR VEGANS !

2 Heat a little oil in a frying pan over a low-medium heat and add a spoonful of the batter. Tilt the pan to allow the batter to spread out a little until you have the size and shape that you want.

5 Keep warm in a low oven while you repeat with the remaining pancakes.

3 Cook for a couple of minutes until you can see bubbles appear on the surface of the pancake.

6 Serve with maple syrup, fresh raspberries and yoghurt, or your favourite toppings.

Finding Balance Could going self-employed be your answer to finding the right work-life balance?

Hig When kids come along, for the majority of parents, the priorities change. Perhaps a once career-focused Mum opts to spend more time at home with the kids. Maybe Dad, who previously enjoyed travel with his job now keeps business trips to a minimum. Or possibly, an ‘old’ job simply doesn’t work around new commitments.

There are a number of considerations to weigh up when going out alone. Initially, you may worry that your regular wage is no longer coming in. Start by dipping your toe, working alongside your existing job in the evenings and on weekends. Or look at contracting to give you a degree of security whilst you get your head around your finances.

It’s a dilemma facing all parents; how best to balance work and family? If this sounds familiar, the idea of quitting your job may seem like the only option. The frightening thought though is losing your income.

You may need some money to start up. Prepare a business plan and approach your bank to understand what loans may be available to help you get started.

So what’s the answer? Whilst risky, and certainly not the ‘easy’ choice, self-employment is an often overlooked as a solution. Lots of professions lend themselves to becoming your own boss however. You could go freelance or mobile with your current job e.g. mobile hairdressing, bookkeeping or marketing consultancy. Franchising is another way of buying into an established idea with the support of the overall brand, such as starting up a new baby class. Platforms like Etsy offer a place to sell handmade goods that could be run alongside building up local custom. Babysitting or childminding might fit best around your family, providing you are able to obtain the relevant qualifications. You could even go down the animal route, dog walking or housesitting animals, or becoming a groomer. Effectively, if you are good at something that is in demand and have a level of resilience, there are lots of ways that you can make it work. Pursuing an idea to have your own business could just provide the flexibility that you’re looking for.

You won’t receive any employment benefits such as a private pension, maternity or holiday pay. Look for a pension plan that you can pay into, and try to work your holiday allowance into your salary. Nobody will be there to motivate you, and the hours may be longer at times. Avoid feeling isolated by attending networking events or using shared workspaces, and seek support from family and friends. The major benefit however, is that you can choose your own hours. Early mornings, nap times and evenings might become part of your working day, but you’ll be able to fit it around the kids. You can do the school run, go to sports day and watch the nativity play without asking anyone’s permission. You can accommodate school holidays or kids’ sick days, and even turn work down if it doesn’t suit you (and can afford to). Becoming your own boss isn’t right for everyone, but it’s certainly a feasible option that more and more people choose - particularly to fit around children. Make the new year your opportunity for a fresh start.

Postnatal Depression:

My St ory

More than 10% of new mothers suffer from postnatal depression, and yet it is poorly understood by many of us. Even mums that are suffering might not realise they are experiencing something more than the ‘baby blues’. This is Kate’s story. How could this be happening to me? I had worked with children since the age of 16, and my dream in life was to be a wife and mother. At the age of 30, I was recently married and pregnant soon after, so why did I feel like life was throwing me a rough deal? Why did no one understand how I was feeling? From start to a much earlier finish than expected, I didn’t enjoy my pregnancy. I had a few hiccoughs during it along with work stresses, so I began maternity leave 12 weeks before my due date, and during my last week at work, my waters broke. I spent the night in hospital and, after an internal exploration, a doctor discovered I had a cord prolapse. Within 30 minutes, my daughter was born by emergency caesarean section. I woke up from general anaesthetic and was told the baby was a girl. She weighed 2lb 14oz, and was being ventilated, but doing well. I was in a side room by myself on the antenatal ward with just one photo of our baby. I felt sorry for myself with stitches, drips and drains, and this was where the negative feelings took hold. That evening, I was taken in a wheelchair to see my baby in the SCBU. My husband pushed me up to the open incubator but, seeing her for the first time, I felt absolutely nothing. I pretended I was delighted to see her. After six days in hospital, I was allowed home. I made myself visit the hospital every day to see our baby, even though I didn’t want to go. I tried talking to

my husband and family, but they didn’t understand how I felt. After five weeks in hospital, my daughter was strong enough to come home but I wasn’t ready. How would I cope? I hoped that when it came to the time our baby should have been born, 12 weeks later, I would have a wonderful bonding experience, but that didn’t happen, and after a phone call with my health visitor, I burst into tears. It was arranged that I would have a volunteer come to the house once per week for a couple of hours. The lady who visited was amazing; she would sit and listen to me, or help around the house, and she understood how I was feeling because she had also had postnatal depression. The sessions lasted for a couple of months, and they helped so much. There were still tears, but I could eventually see the light at the end of the tunnel. It took about nine months before I began to enjoy seeing my baby’s progress. After four years, I was ready to try for another baby. He was only three weeks early, and I had two days of the ‘Baby Blues’. My family was complete. If you think you may be suffering from postnatal depression, it’s important to tell your midwife, health visitor or doctor how you feel. They won’t judge you – they understand that depression is a mental health condition and can help you to get the right treatment and support.

Imagine a busy toddler session with lots of children running around. Two-year-old Hattie swoops in to scoop up a red car and push it down the ramp next to threeyear-old Ellie. Close by, two one-year-olds are banging their cars on a chair, both enjoying making noise. Scenes like these are familiar to many parents all over the world but when does this ‘parallel play’ become ‘playing together’? When does ‘being together’ become ‘meaningful social interaction,’ and why is it so important? In the past, many experts said that young children were incapable of making friends until the age of three, believing that children could not make a true connection until then. However, more recent research has demonstrated that although children may not express their friendships in the same way as adults, they are still forging friendship bonds with those around them. Young children will start with mimicking others, observing and tentatively copying behaviour. As they grow, this will develop into imaginative play and real interaction. Children as young as one year old can express delight in seeing a familiar little face and can laugh with another child, and it’s these small cues that show early friendships. Although academic and extracurricular activities become more important as children grow, we should still strive to make friendship a top priority for children. Creating strong friendships will develop life skills that will increase a child’s wisdom,

confidence and self-esteem. Friendships can make a child feel secure, and they provide an outlet for children to communicate their concerns, dreams and fears. In friendship groups, leadership skills can be tested and coping strategies can develop, which helps children deal with conflict and adversity. Learning how to choose who to be friends with is a life skill in itself, so it’s important that children are given the opportunity at an early age to choose true, kind friends. Having these true friends will also help to reduce any feelings of isolation and loneliness as a child grows older and develops. Playing is fantastic for the imagination. By playing together, children can create feelings of joy and happiness, which positively impact their mood, attitude and drive to succeed. With friendship being so important, and evidence that friendships can begin very early on in childhood, we should try to expose our children to lots of opportunities for interaction, and encourage them to learn how to become friends. For example, regular play sessions can bring the same group of children together, and this gives them the opportunity to build on sharing jokes, playing at the same time and enjoying activities together. These are just some of the many ways to foster relationships. Having a child attend a nursery setting can also aid friendships as there are lots of children to mix with but the same faces will always appear. In a nursery, there are multiple and varied opportunities for interaction in a safe and familiar environment, and with time away from parents, a child can start to build on their own independent skills in making friends. So ‘being together’ is always an opportunity for ‘meaningful interaction,’ and it is never too early to have a friend.
