YEAR 3 POLICY MAKING GARDENS OF THORNEY ISLAND Microorganisims and plants tend to be factored out from the climate change equation, and therefore the seriousness of climate change is underestimated. This is a garden that creates intricate spaces for plants under their prime growing conditions, so visitors can understand first hand the environment they require to thrive. It especially targets politicians from the Houses of Parliament to be among these spaces and hope that they address the severity of the climate crisis and make policies and debates accordingly to help the environment that not only humans live in. Designed spaces are manipulated by different levels of temperature, moisture and light. The site is divided into a light vessel and a dark vessel, with a connecting bridge between them.

From concept drawings, derived main elements for the dark vessel would be the inhabitable wall, mechanical roof, external radiator beds and incubating columns. Inhabitable wall: Wall of high thermal mass that absorbs thermal energy from the sun and release it into the adjacent space to provide greenhouse conditions for the specific plant.

BATTERY 1. CLIMATE incorporate a heat exchanger to circulate air through the source of mass

plants/

a fan pumps warm humid air from the interior of the greenhouse through a network of pipes buried underground. The drop in temperature forces the water vapor to condense, and in that process energy is released. That energy is stored in the soil, causing the soil to heat up. when the greenhouse drops in temperature, the fan kicks on again and extracts that heat from the soil

2. STORING THERMAL ENERGY IN THERMAL MASS

it absorbs excess energy during the day, creating a cooling effect. When the temperature drops at night, it starts releasing that energy, thereby ‘heating’ the greenhouse.

3. SELF-REGULATING HEATING CABLE

self-regulates, you can expect a constant soil temperature over the entire planting area.

increases water uptake, increases rate of photosynthesis stimlates the availability of nutrients in soil improves root growth since it increases metabolic activity of root cells

UNPACKING THE MAIN SPACES: LIGHT VESSEL

The light vessel would be an elevated building where it connects to a bridge that leads from the dark vessel. Elements include pod-like spaces that creates microclimates for certain plants and allows isolated user experience. Calling it the light vessel is because materiality wise, it will be more transparent. This aims to contrast the dark vessel to represent the idea of a conversation where there can be opposite opinions.

RECENT DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE There have been recent cases about how surging temperatures may badly affect the habitat of some species and cases about policies and decisions that may require rethinking regarding improving the climate crisis. These few cases would be the driver of how the spaces within the building would be ‘staged’ and promote understanding towards these certain topics.

10 :45 AM A THRIVING TREE AT ITS PRIME OF TIME The sunken slabs carries a sapling of a UK native tree (ash) to set as a reminder of the importance of the environment that is lacking in the urban community and to raise awareness of the seriousness of climate change. We cannot just rely on expanding forests to counteract the problems of global warming. The governement should be aware that reforestation is not as simple as idealised. Futher measures should be pushed forward to improve in the environment we live in, not just humans but as a an ecosystem. This acts as a reminder of the complexity of trees and how it should not be objectified as the resolution but an active player that helps restoring our environment.

CO2 return for reuse

The Houses of Parliament as an absolute carbon dioxide emission of 13773 tonnes (rolling 12 month in total) as at 31st March 2019. This is made up of carbon emissions from gas fired boilers, and from the use of electricity. The Palace of Westminster Restoration and Renewal Programme is the team that implements substantial energy efficiency improvements and reduce carbon emissions.

With high levels of carbon dioxide emitted back into Westminster, the biopower house takes the greenhouse gas emitted for a photobioractor that undergoes a photosynthetic process to produce oxygen and starts biofuel generation, being a building that gives back to the local area.

There has been discussion about the implementation of renewable energy generation, however limited opportunities are observed given how historic the building is. Photovoltaic cells and thermal solar panels act as a starting point for initial use of renewable energy sources.

MICROCLIMATIC PODS THAT KEEPS THE BALANCE Just like how the interation with bees and orchids have been disrupted, it is a reminder that some point in time, humans can be severely affected. Decline of habitats, survival of the fittest, all are going to eventually happen if no one takes a step forward.

YEAR 2 THE LOCALS GALLERY OF POBLENOU Based in Poblenou, Barecelona, the run down district home to emerging designers, makers and startups is up for regeneration. The project is a gallery that celebrates local artists and gives them space to showcase their work and for their voices to be heard, allowing creators to seek ownership in their work and promoting exhange of artistry between artists and the public. Initial investigations were done on gaps and crevices around the city and the design concept is based on the play of intricate gaps and extrusions to control movement, vision and experience.

The building can be observed in 4 levels through this set of drawings. The building provides a one way circular flow around galleries where step ups and downs define the zoning of each gallery. This idea is to have visitors start from the top as the take an elevator up and spiral down to the exit.

SECTION A-A & B-B Sections show the gaps in the roof where there is a play with light into different galleries and the way light is designed affects how the art pieces are placed. There are also uneven levels between spaces, creating a unique jorney through the building.

YEAR 1 THE MARILYN PAVILION 24hr Living Light is the design project where we build 1:1 temporary pavillions in groups. Our group took Marilyn Monroe’s lifting dress as inspiration to create a hanging mechanical roof that opens and closes made with fabric aluminium ribs like victorian dresses. We also introduced a variety of stools to create a landscape that compliments the hanging canopy.

ALFAFA REBRANDING PROPOSAL The project was to revamp the branding of a restaurant chain Alfafa in Hong Kong. The concept is to give out a vibe of Hong Kong’s colonial past with the use of terracotta, brick walls, arches and circles within the design. There is also an addition of green elements within the space to encourage liveliness and coordinate with the brand image. The aim is to create different sets of spaces within a restaurant and a feature wall that sparks uniqueness and individuality at each location to enhance commercial value and marketing benefits. Below is one of the revisualised stores in Central, Hong Kong.

2019 HK BIENNALE OF URBANISMďźźARCHITECTURE : ISLAND GARDENIA INITIAL PROPOSAL Combining traditional navel architeture and contemporary material methodology, the project proposal presents a City Oasis in the middle of the sea. Island Gardenia is an interactive space blossomed from the awareness towards recyling and plastic pollution. It is an upcycling concept that engages viewers in creative dialogue in beneficial contributions to the environment around them. The garden utilises salvaged beverages containers to keep buoyand, it is also constructed out of tiles repurposed from locally recycled bottles that have been processed and compressed together using the lowest carbon footprint; raising the awareness about the importance and problem of the usage of plastic bottles. It aims to involve the community together to bring our city one step closer to a better and more sustainable future. A selection of drawings from the initial proposal will be shown as well as the final product that was completed after my time working at their offices for reference.

NONSUCH HIGHSCHOOL FOR GIRLS EXPANSION PROJECT

Partial ground floor space of the Nonsuch Highschool For Girls was not put to use and was open to expansion suggestions. With IID Architects, the open space was recreated to provide students with two drama studios, classrooms, an office and an IT suite. Visualsations are done for an initial proposal to the school.
