Visit the most beautiful castles in Flanders

Page 1

INTRODUCTION

When you visit the Flemish countryside, you simply cannot miss the numerous castle domains. These estates, many of which are centuries old, have an abundance of stories to tell: about venerable families, historic places, flourishing communities, etc. They are heritage sites that really appeal to the imagination. They create meaning and offer opportunities for encounters and contemplation. On a local level, they often play an important economic, social and/or cultural role. At Flemish level, they provide a rich palette of visitor experiences, all of which maximise what is sometimes referred to as ‘the soul of the place’: the unique and intangible essence of an extraordinary location.

Yet, visitors from home and abroad are still relatively unfamiliar with our Flemish estates and their tourism potential. With this inspirational brochure, VISITFLANDERS aims to rectify this.

In this brochure, you will find a selection of the castle domains in Flanders that are accessible to tourists. They vary enormously: museum castles, estates where the experience of the landscape is paramount, places where you can dine like royalty or spend the night like a real lord or lady of the castle. The brochure also provides information about walking and cycling routes in the vicinity.

We would also like to remind visitors that these domains are often located near a Flemish art city, or are the gateway to one of our Flemish landscape parks.

This brochure is a ‘living’ document. The information it contains is regularly updated. New castles will be included in the next version. We hope you enjoy discovering our castles in Flanders!

FLEMISH NATIONAL PARKS AND LANDSCAPE PARKS

In 2024, the Flemish Government recognised 9 areas as Flemish Parks or valuable nature areas. 5 areas were recognised as Landscape Parks and 4 areas were recognised as National Parks. These are areas of a certain scale that meet certain quality guarantees.

The 4 National Parks are: NP Hoge Kempen, NP Bosland, NP Scheldt Valley and NP Forests of Brabant

The 5 Landscape Parks are: LSP Maasvallei, LSP Boundless Bocageland, LSP Heart of Haspengouw, LSP Flemish Ardennes and LSP Zwin Region.

In a Landscape Park, the emphasis lies on the diverse activities in the area and the centurieslong interaction between man and nature. Landscape development, recreation, nature, heritage, agriculture, housing, business activities and tourism go hand in hand in these areas.

A National Park is a recognised, geographically defined area of sufficient size with exceptional nature value and international appeal. The management focuses on achieving a sustainable protection and development of landscape ecological processes and the associated ecosystems, habitats and species, together with the area coalition. The unique natural environment, landscape and heritage offer opportunities for tourism and recreational development and promotion, but always within the carrying capacity of nature and its surroundings.

GRAND COMMANDERY ALDEN BIESEN

Grand Commandery Alden Biesen is located in Rijkhoven (Bilzen), in the middle of the rolling Haspengouw. It dates back to the year 1220, and is one of the few remaining intact castles of the Teutonic Order, a medieval order of knights. For centuries, it served as one of the order’s most prominent establishments.

Today, Alden Biesen is an impressive and inspiring heritage site. Every year, more than 250,000 visitors come to admire the 80-hectare domain. Apart from an English park and French gardens, you will find the largest continuous high-stem fruit orchard in north-western Europe, with more than 500 historical varieties.

The former coach houses, storerooms and workroomsincluding the brewery and malt lofts - have been converted into sleeping quarters. In total, Alden Biesen offers 30 rooms and 54 beds for groups. There are also more than 30 rooms for 10 to 500 persons, which can be booked for meetings, lectures, workshops or receptions.

Alden Biesen also offers a wide range of activities for children, such as an annual summer scavenger hunt and an ongoing

walking quest. Today, Alden Biesen also plays an important role as a cultural institution, with numerous initiatives based around storytelling, music and art. Furthermore, there are numerous public events such as guided tours, festivals, concerts and performances.

ORDINGEN CASTLE

The story of Ordingen Castle began in the year 1040. During the Middle Ages, the castle served as a border guard of the County of Loon. The lords of Ordingen Castle would rule until the beginning of the 17th century. It was then that the castle was sold to the land commander of the Biesen bailiwick of the Teutonic Order. For two centuries, the castle had 25 commanders who, especially in the 18th century, were represented locally by stewards. After the French Revolution, two World Wars and several owners, it was time for a thorough renovation. That renovation lasted just a bit longer than expected: 21 years instead of 5! The current owners transformed the castle domain into a lavish fivestar hotel.

Ordingen Castle is a harmonious mix of Gothic and Renaissance elements: majestic towers combined with the refined details on the façades. What a craftsmanship! The castle was recently restored and refurbished

and now offers contemporary luxury in all rooms, suites and facilities. Surrounded by endless fruit orchards, Ordingen Castle is a pearl in the heart of blossom region Haspengouw. It is the ideal base for walking and cycling adventures with the whole family in a gently rolling landscape. Or why not make a trip to the bustling city centres of Hasselt and SintTruiden?

Did you know ... this castle domain has a Gin named after it? The flesh of pears from the orchards next to the former moated castle, combined with fresh and fruity ingredients such as juniper berries, coriander, cardamom and so on,

creates the distinctive flavour of the delicious Ordingen Castle Premium Gin!

DURAS CASTLE

Duras Castle (Sint-Truiden) was built between 1787 and 1789 by Baron Jean Joseph Van der Noot, as a gift for his daughter Joséphine-Louise. Her son, Prince Eugène de Ligne, would later lay claim to the Belgian throne. In the meantime, the castle has been in the possession of descendants of the d’Oultremont family for generations.

At the end of the Second World War, the castle was hit by a German V1 flying bomb. It was subsequently rebuilt according to the original 18th-century design. Today, it lies in a private domain of some 400 ha that includes a castle park, orchards, an old water mill and an orangery with a kitchen garden, which has recently been transformed into a vineyard.

Would you like to spend the night in Duras Castle?

Want to imagine yourself as a real lord or lady of the castle? Then book a stay in the dome room. This comfortable, circular bedroom has a large balcony with a stunning view of the castle domain and the majestic 300 metre-long plane tree avenue. In good weather, you can

HEX CASTLE

Hex Castle was built around 1770 as a summer residence and hunting lodge for Frans-Karel von Velbrück, the prince-bishop of Liège. This humanist, art connoisseur, scientist and nature lover enjoyed retreating to the hills of Haspengouw. The castle is surrounded by formal gardens with a magnificent rose collection, an organic kitchen garden with rare vegetables, and an English landscape park with lovely vistas and centuries-old trees.

Hex is managed by the d’Ursel family. The castle, gardens and park are listed monuments and designated as a Habitats Directive area - an area extremely rich in flora and fauna.

Twice every year, the Hex Garden Festival takes place at the domain; a renowned and very popular garden fair. Throughout the year, there are courses and demonstrations, such as pruning roses, making your own compost, etc. More information is available

HEERS CASTLE

The late Gothic Heers Castle in Haspengouw fell into disrepair at the end of the 20th century due to quarrels and the lack of money of the last noble owners. A rescue initiative was launched at the heart of which were local volunteers. The Flemish government eventually purchased the domain in its entirety and, today, many partners are working together to create a new future for this impressive place full of history. It is one of heritage foundation Herita's most challenging restoration projects.

The ruined castle was closed to the public for years, but is now cautiously starting to open its doors. Every fortnight, there is a guided tour in and around the castle. Do not expect comfort, but do expect a touch of adventure! Put on a site helmet and explore all those places you are not normally allowed to go: the farm with the largest tithe barn in Flanders, the salons and the ballroom inside the castle ... The past glory of these spaces will linger for a while.

The castle’s agenda is also full of many temporary activities such as volunteer work days, picking flowers in the picking garden, camping on the castle domain, a scavenger hunt for children and more. Find out what there is to do on www.kasteelvanheers.be

CHÂTEAU DE LA MOTTE

Nestled in the landscape of South Limburg, less than an hour from Antwerp, Brussels and Maastricht, lies the centuries-old castle domain Château de la Motte. In the 13th century, a fortified motte tower was built here - the bottom section of which can still be seen today in the castle cellars. In 1560, the tower was extended to create a veritable castle. A fire largely destroyed it later: only a square tower survived. It still stands proudly. The present eclectic-style castle dates back to 1865.

In 1994, Château de la Motte was in a dilapidated state, but it has since been beautifully restored. Nowadays, you can enjoy real Flemish cuisine in the brasserie with a covered terrace by the moat. Parties and events can also be

organised here. Afterwards, you can spend the night in one of the 17 cottage-style rooms in the holiday accommodation Kleine Motte.

LEUT CASTLE

Vilain XIIII castle is situated between Leut and Meeswijk in the municipality of Maasmechelen. The castle park connects to the river valley of the Meuse, with the Netherlands on the other side of the river. Together with the service buildings, the castle is a protected monument and it is part of the protected cultural-historical landscape 'Vilain XIIII Castle: castle and surrounding park’.

The castle owes its current name Vilain XIIII to Charles Vilain XIIII who took possession of the castle in 1822 when he married a local baroness. The young groom, only 19 years old, came from the highest nobility circles in Belgium. The young couple exchanged vows and the castle has borne his name ever since. The love between them proved great; they would have no less than seven daughters.

In 1920, the castle was sold to the coal company N.V. Kolenmijnen Limburg-Maas with the aim of converting it into a hospital. A maternity unit was also established

there in 1950. Starting in 1988, it was converted into a rest and care home.

In 2022, VISITFLANDERS became the owner of the castle and will revalue it on the basis of the philosophy of Travel to Tomorrow.

In the meantime, the focus lies on tourist experimentation and a temporary opening.

Opening hours

You can visit the castle park free of charge every day between sunrise and sunset. At the moment, it is not possible to visit the castle itself. The summer bar is open from May to September and you can also rent e-scooters there.

LANDGOED ALTENBROEK

Located in the beautiful Voeren region, we find the Landgoed Altenbroek. As is the case with many castles and manor houses, the earliest history of Landgoed Altenbroek remains unknown. The name first popped up on the radar around the year 1300. The original owner and reason for construction? Impossible to discover. However, it is known that the estate changed hands regularly over the centuries. Land was purchased and then sold again and many renovations took place. For example, the construction of the north wing in brick commenced around 1775. This bergerie originally served as a sheep shelter.

From the year 1790, the de Schiervel family began to make its mark in the area. The entire lineage consisted of influential people often with high positions. After living at the castle for several generations, this dynasty came to an end with Baron Albert de Schiervel. He got into a conflict with another aristocrat: in a duel

lasting only a few minutes, Albert was struck in the chest and died of his injuries. Albert was the last male heir of the family and upon his death the property rights were transferred to his sister. The estate remained under the family's control until 1994, after which it was sold to businessman Wim Claessen.

In 2017, David van Brakel took over the reins. His goal? Restoring the estate to its former glory. And with success. The domain now boasts a beautifully renovated hotel with a Burgundian restaurant, luxurious rooms and spacious suites.

Of course, the beautiful surroundings should not be overlooked. Landgoed Altenbroek is idyllically situated in the middle of the picturesque Voer region, on an expansive terrain of some 20 hectares. Surrounded by nature, you can enjoy three attractive ponds and the historic Altenbroek mill, in addition to our own water sources. Drift away in one of the rooms, suites or holiday homes

overlooking the beautiful hilly landscape. Landgoed Altenbroek is called the pearl of the Voer region for a reason.

HOF TER LINDEN

In the centre of Edegem, about 7 kilometres from Antwerp’s Grote Markt, you find the Hof Ter Linden Castle. The classicist castle is surrounded by a 52-hectare green oasis. The domain’s history dates back to the 13th century and it owes its name to the local court proceedings that took place there under a lime tree. The current castle dates back to the 18th century, when the owners replaced the dilapidated medieval castle with a pleasure estate. The building is a wonderful example of Classicism in the green belt around Antwerp, situated in a majestic park with two mirrored coach houses in the courtyard. The castle is decorated in Louis XVI style with exceptional marble and parquet floors.

The Hof Ter Linden domain is a great place to enjoy a walk. A stately entrance avenue with a double row of lime trees leads you to the castle. A 5 km loop guides you around the domain. Along the way, the landscape varies from park to forest and meadow. A boardwalk connects you to the nearby Fort 5.

ZELLAER CASTLE

The Castle of Zellaer is just a stone’s throw away from Mechelen. It is a fairy-tale setting with its keep, moat and drawbridge. The history of this special place dates back to the 13th century. Back then, a medieval castle stood on the site currently occupied by the present castle. Due to its location, it has always been a desirable place to live. A number of senior clergymen, mayors of Mechelen, wealthy businessmen, counts and a baron successively took up residence here. Because the various owners wanted to put their own mark on the castle, it was rebuilt several times. The present Neo-Gothic castle dates back to 1885, and stands in a straight line with Mechelen’s St Rumbold’s tower. Baron de Vrière had it built from white sandstone using stones from Vilvoorde’s city wall. Inside the castle, there are many well-preserved elements such as wood carvings and paintings.

You can also go for a lovely walk in the 18.5 hectares of park woodland surrounding the castle. The canal structure, pond and avenues that converge centrally in a star bear witness to the castle’s rich history.

In order to further develop the domain, the Stichting Kempens Landschap took it on on a long lease. During the summer you will find a convivial summer bar here. From June to the end of September, you can also have breakfast in the castle. In due course, you can come here to spend the night in a real fairy-tale castle and have a delicious bite to eat in the coach house.

Opening hours

The park is open to the public free of charge. The castle can only be visited with a guide.

Admission prices

CASTLE DE MERODE

The name de Merode is inextricably linked with the history of Westerlo. And yet, the castle of the same name, situated in the centre of the municipality, has not always been in the possession of the de Merode family. This has only been the case since 1478, when the Council of Brabant officially allocated the domain to Jan IV de Merode.

The castle owes its current appearance to Jean Philippe Eugene de Merode (1674-1732) - a prominent man in his time, as he was Grandee of Spain, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Field Marshal-General of the Imperial armies of Austria. He commissioned the construction of a network of avenues and embellished the castle. Meanwhile, many centuries later, the castle is still inhabited by a de Merode prince.

In recent years, the castle has gained an impressive asset: the spectacles of Historalia - open-air musicals based on special historical events or figures, such as Rubens

or Queen Marie-Antoinette. And during the Christmas holidays, the castle is transformed into a magical winter palace as part of the ‘Kerstmagie’ (Christmas Magic) event. Not to be missed!

HOF TER LAKEN

The castle domain of Hof Ter Laken in Booischot is a real gem by the Grote Nete river. The Flemish Neo-Renaissance castle is a real eye-catcher in the magnificent 30-hectare walking park. The building in its current form was constructed between 1830 and 1870. In addition, the park boasts a carriage house with horse stables, a forester’s house, the former ice cellar and a partially walled kitchen garden and orchard.

The domain is crossed by the Molenbeek and several other “laken” or smaller watercourses, to which it owes its name. It is surrounded by forests and flower-filled meadows. The stately entrance avenue and the location along the charming meandering river complete the picture.

It’s worth mentioning that you can combine a walk from Hof Ter Laken along the Grote Nete river, which with good reason is called the Loire of the Kempen, with a visit to many other castles along the river. You will literally walk through the decor of the film Pallieter, which was shot in and around Hof Ter Laken.

On 19 July 2018, the municipality of Heist-op-den-Berg and Stichting Kempens Landschap took over the domain from the de Gruben family. Since then, the park has been managed by Kempens Landschap and the restoration of the buildings has been prepared in great detail. Restoration of the castle and carriage house will be taking place between 2024 and 2026.

In the future, the castle will serve as heritage accommodation for large groups (up to 30-35 people). The carriage house with coach house will become a brasserie with a room for events and space for meetings. So after your walk or bike ride, you will be able to enjoy a quiet moment in the glorious setting of Hof Ter Laken.

WESTMALLE CASTLE

The stately Westmalle Castle is set in a vast landscape park, in the middle of beautiful forests and approached by imposing avenues. The historic castle domain is a centuries-old estate with a rich history dating back to 1100. At the time, it was known as 'Hoeve ten Driesse'. In 1561, the farmstead was converted into a knightly castle.

Over the centuries, the original structure has had various owners. One of them was the Antwerp diamond merchant Bovie, in 1848. He renovated the castle and had the park laid out by the designer of the Antwerp city park. In 1878, Baron E. de Turck purchased the estate. He restored the castle and gave it its current appearance. Both the park and its spacious surroundings have been protected as a cultural-historical landscape since 1977. The castle itself is also protected as a monument.

East of the castle, there is an unusual service building with a cone-shaped roof. This unique piece of heritage, constructed in 1841, used to house the staff, has a

carriage house, haylofts and horse stables. The circular structure is unique in Belgium and, like the castle, it is a protected monument. Throughout history (including during the First and Second World Wars), both this outbuilding and the castle served several times as shelter for the residents of Westmalle.

GAASBEEK CASTLE

In the Middle Ages, Gaasbeek Castle, hidden among the rolling hills of the Pajottenland, was a fortified castle. Later, it evolved into a spacious country house. In the late 19th century, it came into the hands of marchioness Marie Arconati Visconti, who inherited it from her husband. This remarkable lady, who combined a busy intellectual life in Paris with long holidays in Gaasbeek, had it completely restored into a romantic dream castle. On her death, she donated the castle to the Belgian state, with the express wish that the building and its collection should be open to the public. Now, a hundred years later, the legacy of the marchioness has been restored to its former glory after an extensive renovation. The castle collection dazzles in a brand new scenography and engages in a dialogue with contemporary reflections. 800 years of stories are told and the present and the past meet each other in an intimate embrace. Come along and feel the heartbeat of what once was...

The 49-hectare castle park, with its centuries-old trees, ponds, avenues, meandering paths and historic buildings, is the ideal place to

unwind. The domain is also home to the unique museum garden, in which old varieties of fruit and vegetables are cultivated.

BOUCHOUT CASTLE - MEISE BOTANICAL GARDEN

Bouchout Castle stands in the middle of Meise Botanic Garden. It is built around a 12th-century keep, a square defensive tower with walls of up to a metre thick. Over the centuries, the keep grew into an impressive, closed fortress with four round towers and a moat. The castle was repeatedly looted and restored. The residents were notables who certainly left their mark on Belgian history. The castle was comprehensively renovated around the time of the French Revolution. The extensive castle grounds were transformed into an English landscape garden, with exotic plants, charming ponds and picturesque follies.

At the end of the 19th century, King Leopold II purchased the castle for his sister Charlotte - the widow of Maximilian of Austria, Emperor of Mexico, who was shot during a revolution in that country. The interior was then refurbished in NeoGothic and Neo-Renaissance style. Not everything has been preserved, but much of the woodwork is still there, as is the interior of the salon where the empress liked to spend her time.

Today, the castle is part of Meise Botanic Garden. The former English landscape garden - of which you can still find many traces - now houses a world-famous plant collection. There is something to do in every season, and you can stroll around to your heart’s content. And take the children with you: they can let off steam in the play forest, go on a treasure hunt with King Amaryllo or try out the Amaze-your-footpath, an adventurous barefoot experience.

In the castle’s main hall, there is a permanent exhibition of the history of the domain and its residents. You can visit the keep, not to mention the roof terrace: the view is incredible!

HORST CASTLE

Horst Castle, located among the green Hageland hills, is recognisable by its square tower. This dates from the 15th century and is one of the oldest remaining parts of this moated castle. The appearance of the other rooms is largely down to MariaAnna Van den Tympel, owner of the castle in the 17th century. She had the chapel and carriage house built and also decorated the stately banquet halls with beautiful stucco work by the renowned stuccoist J.C. Hanssche. Maria-Anna transformed the castle into one with a pleasure garden with ponds and vineyards to which she invited important guests. In those days, the moated castle also acted as the base for hunting parties.

The castle is currently closed for extensive restoration. Every day, many professionals are doing their best to make it once again the party castle of yesteryear. Herita's website lists events where you can witness the restoration of the moated castle from the front row. (And, among other things, enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views from the top of the keep).

GRAVENSTEEN

Narrow tower steps, massive battlements, evocative rooms and a stunning view. That is Gravensteen, the medieval stronghold in the heart of Flemish art city Ghent. As a visitor, you can wander through the medieval castle with its huge keep, picturesque courtyard and distinctive architecture.

From count's residence, through courthouse to prison and factory. Over the centuries, this imposing castle has fulfilled a variety of functions. In the 9th century, the Counts of Flanders built fortifications in order to protect themselves. We do not know exactly when the Gravensteen became a centre of power, but it is clear that the castle was an important place from very early on. In the 12th century, Philip of Alsace converted the stronghold into an imposing stone castle. Although it

was never permanently inhabited, it functioned as an administrative centre and courthouse. Later, it became a prison and, in the 18th century, an industrial complex. In the 19th century, it was restored to the romantic interpretation of the castle of Philip of Alsace.

A visit to the Gravensteen includes a comedy audio guide. Flemish comedian and cabaret artist Wouter Deprez takes you on a tour of this stately Ghent castle. Via this unique audio guide, he shares with you his fascination for Philip of Alsace. He serves you his own quirky take on a world of wandering counts, crusaders and courtly love. With illustrator Randall Casaer's drawings, as poetic as they are funny, you will quickly fall under the spell of the Middle Ages. The audio guide is available in Dutch, French, English,

German and Spanish. People with hearing impairments can experience the comedy tour thanks to a visioguide available in Flemish or international sign language. Planning a shorter visit to the Gravensteen? As of the summer 2024, you can also experience the Gravensteen with the Big Five tour, a story told compactly in a halfhour audio walk.

Are you visiting the Gravensteen with young children? Then take them with the Little Guide on an exciting hunt for the lost jester. Along the way, you discover interesting facts about the old castle and its former inhabitants. Mission accomplished? Then your youthful sleuths receive a nice memento. This hunt is suitable for children aged 3 to 8 and is available in Dutch, French, English, German and Spanish.

Are you coming with a group? Then immerse yourself in the castle's history during a guided tour. The tour takes 90 minutes and there is a maximum of 15 people per guide. Perhaps you have a bit more time? Then combine your trip to the Gravensteen with one to our other Historic Houses.

Opening hours

The Gravensteen is open every day from 10.00 until 18.00. It is however closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January.

Admission prices

A ticket to visit the Gravensteen costs €13. Are you travelling in a group, with children or are you eligible for a special price? Check the admission prices on the Gravensteen website

BEERVELDE CASTLE PARK

Beervelde Castle Park was laid out in 1873, with a special goal: to become a showcase for Ghent’s ornamental plant cultivation, which was still in its infancy at the time. The Counts de Kerchove de Denterghem, who commissioned it, were great plant lovers and played a leading role in the sector. The 25-hectare domain is still owned by the family.

In mid-May and mid-October, the castle park serves as the setting for the internationally renowned Beervelde Garden Days. With 240 participants and more than 20,000 visitors from all over Europe, these events have become a household name for garden fair enthusiasts.

The historic castle stood in the middle of the park and was damaged during World War II. It was later demolished and made way for the magnificent villa that occupies the site today. But the original cellars have been preserved - and they are well worth a visit. In the 1960s, they were painted by the famous painter Roger Raveel. The artwork

is considered a highlight of his career. Remarkably, the count at that time had engaged Raveel because he wanted to furnish the cellar as recreational space for his teenage sons.

OOIDONK CASTLE

In a meander of the River Lys, a stone’s throw from Ghent, lies the elegant, stately Ooidonk Castle. The castle moat and the castle park radiate tranquillity. It makes it easy to forget Ooidonk’s turbulent history.

In the 16th century, the castle belonged to Philip, Count of Horne. He was one of the most prominent supporters of William of Orange, the leader of the revolt against Spain. In 1568, together with the Count of Egmont, he was beheaded at the Grote Markt in Brussels. Ooidonk became embroiled in the religious wars that ravaged our regions in the 16th century. The castle was destroyed twice. Eventually, an Antwerp dignitary, Maarten della Faille had it converted into a country house in Renaissance style.

In 1864, the castle and the grounds were purchased by Senator Henri t’Kint de Roodenbeke and his wife Zoe de Naeyer. Now, 150 years after their ancestor, Count Henry t’Kint de Roodenbeke and his three children live here.

LOZER CASTLE (HUISE)

The Lozer Castle domain (Huise) has been in the possession of the della Faille d’Huysse family since 1654. At that time it was known as ’t Goed t’Uplosere. The current owners are the tenth generation!

The charming castle was given its Neoclassical look during a renovation in the 18th century. It sits snugly in a 13-hectare wooded park. There are winding paths, tranquil ponds and striking outbuildings such as a coach house, a courtyard and a towershaped garden pavilion. The park was laid out in the 1880s by the famous landscape architect Friedrich Eduard Keilig. You could not get much fancier in those days: Keilig also drew up the plans for Laeken Park, the Ter Kamerenbos and Antwerp City Park. From the castle domain, a double-lined avenue leads to the Church of Our Lady of Assistance, which was built in the mid-19th century at the behest of the then Baron.

Fancy an overnight stay at Lozer Castle?

Elisabeth and Bernard della Faille d'Huysse welcome you to their B&B (****) in the former coach house. All the rooms are situated on the south side and offer lovely views of the castle pond and the park.

For a minimum of two nights, you can also stay in one of their three holiday homes (*****), namely The Lodge, which is also located in the coach house, or La Laiterie and Het Bakhuis in the square courtyard Het Neerhof on the domain.

POEKE CASTLE

With its pale pink facades and fairy-tale appearance, Poeke Castle (Aalter) is a real gem. It is located in a wooded park in the centre of Meetjesland, halfway between the historic cities of Ghent and Bruges.

There was already a castle here in the Middle Ages, but it was destroyed in 1453, by the army of Philip the Good. A few centuries later, the noble family of Preudhomme d’Hailly built a new castle on the ruins in the Classicism style - 300,000 bricks were transported to do so! Baron Victor Pycke de Peteghem purchased it in 1873 and converted it into a romantic retreat. Later, the castle became a boarding school for orphans and children with difficult circumstances at home. VISITFLANDERS acquired it in 2021, and is now working on a new purpose for the domain via a participatory process.

The castle is situated in a park of not less than 56 hectares. With its imposing avenues, it invites you to take a delightful walk. On the way, you pass historical sites such as the coach house, the walled kitchen garden, the hunting hounds’ kennel

(with an oven!), the English garden and the ‘carburekot’ - a small building that used to produce the gas used to light the castle. Every first Sunday from May to November, there is a free guided nature walk.

The castle itself can only be visited in groups accompanied by a guide. Unique: a contemporary art biennale is organised here every two years. And did you know that the castle and park have often been used as a setting for TV series and films? Among others, ‘De bossen van Vlaanderen’ and ‘De bende van Jan de Lichte’ were filmed here.

The Castles of Beveren

CORTEWALLE MOATED CASTLE

In the centre of Beveren there is a 15th-century moated castle: Cortewalle Castle, the ideal location for a wedding or anniversary celebration. But even if there is nothing to celebrate, the 10-hectare castle park is still worth a visit. There is a wonderful bee and butterfly garden. It is always pleasantly bustling with picnicking young people, walkers and cyclists who come to take a breather under the centuries-old trees.

The castle can only be visited with a guide. Listen to stories about the former residents. Admire the beautiful rooms and the valuable works of art – such as the restored tapestry from Aubusson, a French village famous for its tapestry weavers. Extra special: the impressive archive of the de Brouchoven de Bergeyck family, former residents of the castle, is also freely accessible for research.

Opening hours and admission prices

The park is open to the public free of charge. The castle can only be visited with a guide.

Address

Zwarte Dreef 2, 9120 Beveren.

Did you know?

In the 15th century, Cortewalle had two well-known residents: Joos Vijd and his wife Elisabeth Borluut - the patrons of the Ghent Altarpiece, the world-famous painting by the Van Eyck brothers. The original castle was once even visible on the Ghent Altarpiece, but unfortunately disappeared during an earlier restoration. Discover who Joos Vijd was and what he meant to Beveren on a multimedia cycling route.

HOF TER SAKSEN

Hof ter Saksen is one of the rare, closed park forests in the Land of Waas. The showpiece is the stunning 18th-century castle and its orangery with a cafeteria. In addition to refreshing water features and expansive lawns, the park also offers a rich diversity of plants and trees, with a particular focus on Chinese and Japanese species. A place to go completely Zen! On the 33.5-hectare domain, you can perhaps search for the four-leaf clover: there is an

arboretum, a Wase landscape garden (nature garden), a highstem orchard and, of course, the Beveren brook valley. Or meet the industrious inhabitants of the gigantic beehive. You can also book a nature guide. The guide will tell you stories about the park in line with the rhythm of the seasons and your particular interests. For the little ones, there is a play forest. Discover the flora of the Ghent Altarpiece in the Vijd Garden or delight in the sensory garden.

HERITAGE HOUSE AND ART DEPOT HOF TER WELLE

Hof Ter Welle is hidden behind a stately beech avenue, surrounded by an imposing moat. The oldest traces of the castle date back to the 13th century. In 1723, the Beveren mayor's daughter Anna Piers purchased the building to house an orphanage for young girls. The site grew to become an orphanage, school and monastery domain. Today, this hidden gem is the heritage house of the Municipality of Beveren. It houses the museum of local history and the municipal art collection - silent

witnesses that bring the rich past of the Land van Beveren to life with art and stories. The charming Baroque chapel dating from the 18th century is used for exhibitions, lectures and concerts.

D’URSEL CASTLE

For almost four centuries, Hingene Castle was the summer residence of the noble d’Ursel family. Every summer, the duke would travel with his family and servants to his favourite country retreat. Now the castle and park are the property of the Province of Antwerp, which is lovingly restoring them to their former glory.

Go through the monumental gates and discover an oasis of calm. Footpaths lead you past ponds and along ancient lanes, and with a bit of luck you may spot a squirrel, a bird of prey or a roe deer along the way. You can have a picnic with a view of the castle or play on the vast lawns. In the gatehouse, you can learn all about the domain’s history and pick up a brochure with the favourite walk of the duke in around 1900. The gatehouse is also the starting point for two escape games, which allow you to experience the park in a unique way.

In the castle, the walls are covered with Chinese wallpaper and unique painted and printed cotton fabrics (chintz). The oldest pieces date from the mid-17th century and the latest were placed in 1967. Together, they form a unique collection: no castle in Europe boasts more chintz than Hingene.

You can visit the castle during activities such as exhibitions, concerts, guided tours and other events. Please check the calendar on www.kasteeldursel.be

Stay overnight in the castle domain

In the former atelier on the first floor, there is an open kitchen and a lounge with a view of the park.

DE NOTELAER PAVILION

De Notelaer pavilion is an absolute gem on the banks of the Scheldt. The round, 18th-century building owes its name to a huge walnut tree that once stood on the banks of the Scheldt and served as a beacon for skippers. These days, it is a popular stopping point for cyclists and walkers. The dike cellar and the ground floor used to house the ferry service and the inn. The beautiful salons and the staircase were private. After all, the pavilion belonged to the castle domain of the noble family d’Ursel in nearby Hingene. They used it as a hunting lodge and as a venue for parties. During the summer months, the duke and his family dined there regularly, usually in the company of high-ranking guests.

The pavilion’s showpiece is the round salon. Besides the exquisite wall and dome paintings of muses, gods and mythical creatures, it is especially the unique parquet floor that attracts attention. No fewer than eight different types of wood were used in the geometric pattern. Be sure to venture upstairs to the top: from the cupola gallery, there is a priceless view of the Scheldt, the polders and the polder villages. The pavilion can be visited free of charge.

VZW De Notelaer organises exhibitions, Sunday summer concerts and guided walks. Relax on the sunny garden terrace, enjoy the peace while sipping a local beer or eating a piece of homemade Notelaere tart. You can also bring your own picnic. And do not forget to pay a visit to nearby d’Ursel Castle in Hingene: a splendid historic building where there is also plenty to experience.

MARNIX CASTLE DE SAINTE ALDEGONDE

The Neo-Gothic Bornem Castle is situated on a rustic branch of the old Scheldt. The domain’s history dates back more than 1,000 years, to Viscount Lambrecht I of Ghent. Over the centuries, the domain has been owned by several important families. The family of the current owner, Count John II de Marnix de Sainte Aldegonde, has owned the domain since 1773! In addition to the impressive castle, the estate also boasts a medieval duck decoy, one of the oldest in Europe! This protected monument was fully restored by Stichting Kempens Landschap in 2023. LAARNE CASTLE

The medieval Laarne Castle is one of the most beautiful and bestpreserved moated castles in the country. Over the centuries, the castle grew into a noble summer residence. Today, it still exudes the grandeur of that era. The imposing knights' hall, the old kitchens, the magnificent salons, the prison and the renowned silver collection of Claude D'Allemagne make for an unforgettable visit.

With the film guide ‘HEKSEN!’ (witches), you can explore the castle from bottom to top. Together with priest Jan Schatteman (played by Ivan Pecnick) and cleaning lady Josyne (played by Heidi De Grauwe), you dive into the castle's past and also find out all about the WITCHES of Laarne. Be transported back to one of the darkest episodes in our history. Who were these alleged WITCHES? How did it come to this? What is gnawing at the priest’s conscience? What secret does Josyne carry with her?

Also for families! There are several active trails for children: a witch trail (3-5 years), photo quests (5-7 years and 8-9 years) and the exciting discovery trail 'Heintje Heks zoekt de sleutel van de schatkamer' (Heintje Heks seeks the key to the

WISSEKERKE CASTLE VILAIN XIIII MUSEUM

In the charming polder village of Bazel, a robust moated castle watched over the Scheldt valley in the 13th century. Later, Wissekerke Castle was built here which, for more than two hundred years, was the residence of the noble Vilain XIIII family.

In the 19th century, Viscount Philippe and his consort Zoë de Feltz decided to rebuild the castle in the Neo-Gothic style. Wissekerke got everything a castle needed: a façade to show off, an imposing entrance gate, a stunning English landscape park with an elegant wrought-iron suspension bridge, and a kitchen garden with exotic fruits, etc. A water reservoir was built on top of the dovecote and an ice cellar below it - state-of-theart at the time, when refrigerators and freezers had yet to be invented. For the interior, the Viscountess was inspired by the Empire-style, which had become popular under Napoleon, a good friend of hers.

After meticulous restoration work, the castle reopened in March 2023 with a completely renewed interactive experience trail. Viscountess Zoé de Feltz takes you through the family’s history, the birth of Belgium, the tensions between Catholics and Liberals and her special bond with Napoleon. Projections, audio stories, fascinating objects, a digital quiz and atmospheric soundscapes make Wissekerke Castle one large time machine. And outside, you can stroll around and dawdle in the beautiful, landscaped park.

Castles near BRUGES

LOPPEM CASTLE

Just a stone’s throw from Bruges lies the stately Castle of Loppem, in the middle of a romantic English garden with centuries-old trees, ponds and a maze. The imposing monument was built in the mid19th century in a style that was very fashionable at the time; the Neo-Gothic. It is a complete work of art: the exterior and interior are in perfect harmony. Englishman Edward Welby Pugin designed the furniture, while Jean-Baptiste Bethune - known as the founder of the Saint-Lucas schools - designed the interior: the stained-glass windows, the chandeliers, the staircases and fireplaces, etc. Everything was made by local artisans with considerable craftsmanship.

In the final days of the First World War, in the autumn of 1918, the castle received a high-profile visit: King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth took up residence there for a month. While based there, the King appointed a new government. Among other things, the so-called ‘government of Loppem’ introduced universal suffrage - though for the time being only for men.

A visit to Loppem Castle is both a journey through time and a

journey around the world. The Neo-Gothic interiors and living quarters downstairs reveal how a noble family lived more than a hundred years ago. A grand staircase takes you to the first floor, where you can peek inside the family chapel. You can also see the room where Albert and Elisabeth stayed. In separate rooms, you can enjoy the collections of Jean and Roland van Caloen, two former lords of the castle who were passionate art collectors. There are stunning works from the Middle Ages, as well as Asian and African art.

D’AERTRYCKE CASTLE

The history of d’Aertrycke castle dates back to the year 1865. In that year, August de Maere, the spiritual father of the port of Zeebrugge, managed to get his hands on a domain in Torhout. He had a Neo-Gothic castle built there and in 1897 - in the meantime he had been elevated to the nobilityhe received permission to add ‘d’Aertrycke’ to his name.

One of his descendants, Xavier de Maere, became known as the second-in-command of the Belgian South Pole expedition in 195859. After his mother’s death, he partly opened the domain to the public. Now you can relax in the 55-hectare castle park with ponds, garden arbours and loop-shaped walking paths - designed by the renowned garden architect Louis Fuchs.

Today, the castle serves as a restaurant and banquet hall. It is the dream location for weddings (it has its own wedding chapel), receptions, garden parties,

corporate banquets, meetings and seminars. The former coach house has been converted into a bistro.

LAKEBOS DOMAIN

The 'Lakebos Domain', also known as 'Castle of the Lakeboschs' or 'Red Castle', has a very eventful history. It is originally a neo-Gothic castle designed by architect Jean Béthune. Completed in 1876, it was the residence of Baron Henri d'Udekem d'Acoz until he was murdered in the Bulskampveld woods in May 1915. This murder was the first in a series of murders and unexplained disappearances that gripped the Beernem region in the decades to follow. Later, they were turned into the movie ‘De bossen van Vlaanderen’ (The woods of Flanders).

After World War II, the buildings were partially demolished and the park cleared. Now what remained of the castle is an eclectic ensemble of historical original elements with additions and renovations from the second half of the 20th century. The coach house remained pretty well intact, serving first as a down blanket factory and later as a theatre hall. The estate sometimes disappeared from the spotlight for years on end, only to rise again as a phoenix that cannot deny its roots and its history.

The castle is currently inhabited and can only be visited on request. The Coach House, park and outbuildings can host events and

there is room for accommodation and hospitality. For example, you can stay overnight in tree tents put up every summer via the 'Boomkamp' project, while 'Sensi-events' provides a pop-up restaurant and glamping around a campfire. The park hosts bushcraft courses and cultural events (lectures and murder dinners!). This is certainly a place with a quirky charm!

TEN TORRE CASTLE

In the green Bruges Hinterland, less than 10 km from the Flemish art city Bruges, lies Ten Torre Castle. The long, stately entrance avenue offers a view of the square moated castle which has a hexagonal tower at each corner. The castle is surrounded by water and is set entirely in a green landscape.

The history of Ten Torre Water Castle dates back to the year 1353. Former owners included King Francis I of France, Emperor Charles V, the mayors of Bruges and several barons. The current castle was built in 1845, commissioned by Baron Lebailly de Tilleghem. It was restored in 1895. The de Schietere de Lophem family was the last noble family to occupy Ten Torre and did so until the late 1990s. Thereafter, the castle came into the possession of families with a love for the domain.

The castle is part of Flanders' architectural heritage and, in recent years, it has served as an idyllic holiday location. High ceilings, creaky parquet floors, narrow spiral staircases, towers and a covered terrace with a view of the entrance gate. Together with your whole

family or your friends, you get a real castle experience during your stay. Because the castle was transformed from a private residence into a unique holiday residence without altering the architecture.

Surrounded by a moat and more than 10 hectares of private garden, park, and forest, the estate is situated in the midst of the silence and tranquillity of nature, making it an ideal spot to unwind. At the same time, it is also the ideal starting point for day trips to Bruges, Damme and the Flemish coast.

Castles in WEST FLANDERS

BEAUVOORDE CASTLE

Beauvoorde Castle, distinguishable by its Flemish Renaissance style, is located in the picturesque West Flanders village of Wulveringem (Veurne). The beautiful castle park of over two hectares with pond is fully walled and an oasis of tranquillity for visitors.

The castle was most likely built in the 12th century on a motte, a small hill surrounded by a moat. The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1408 and concerns a 'stede' inhabited by Jan De Valuwe. In 1573, the castle came into the possession of the de Bryarde family. Afflicted by ongoing wars and plague epidemics, the family soon sought refuge elsewhere. On their return, they found a ruined castle. High Bailiff Jacob de Bryarde rebuilt the site into a pleasure garden, but from about 1662 the castle fell into disrepair ... until the eccentric Arthur Merghelynck purchased the castle ruins in 1875 and had it restored into a pleasure garden in his beloved 17th-century style. Beauvoorde Castle became his nostalgia project. He filled the

building to the brim with beautiful 17th-century furniture, paintings and curiosities which he purchased via collectors from all over the world. What he could not find, he had copied. Everything remained exactly as it was until his death in 1908.

After a thorough restoration by Herita vzw, the castle will reopen its doors to visitors in 2025. You can, however, visit the castle park during the works. Tip: the listening walk through picturesque Wulveringem tells you more about the history of Beauvoorde Castle and its last inhabitants.

Beauvoorde Castle is currently closed for restoration work. The castle park remains open to visit.
