Did you clutch your pearls at the mere sight or thought of boudoir? What is it about this type of art that makes everyone want to run and hide?

WHY EVERY WOMAN SHOULD CONSIDER BOUDOIR PORTRAITS Boudoir is nothing to be ashamed of – instead, hear me out on why more women should consider taking the leap and booking a boudoir photography session for themselves. KEEP AN OPEN MIND

Just the thought of getting in front of a camera in such a vulnerable way can be nerve-wrecking, however, once you get past that initial hurdle, you will more than likely be glad that stepped out of your comfort zone. Boudoir sessions, tastefully done, will not disappoint. Be sure to schedule with an experienced boudoir photographer, one that you’re comfortable with, who will customize your experience to ensure that you are captured in the most flattering poses and light. It is important to discuss any concerns with your photographer in advance in order for them to prepare you for an amazing experience.

think, it is the perfect opportunity to get dolled up with full hair and makeup, pick out flirty pieces that accentuate your curves and make you feel good, and (hopefully) sip on a glass of wine while you’re at it. Maybe you’ve been experiencing a difficult time in life and need a little pick-me-up to remind yourself that you’ve still got “it” (whatever it may be). Whatever the reason, just remember that you are doing it for yourself, first and foremost. MAKE IT FUN

Boudoir parties are a thing. Perhaps you would like to schedule a party with a few of your closest friends, with a glam squad, as you take turns posing for the camera. It becomes a memorable experience (TONS of laughs) and you get some amazing images in return for your own personal use. Some individuals are more open to the experience when not having to go at it alone.

When I booked my very first boudoir session, the images were a gift for my husband on our one year wedding anniversary (he loved them, by the way). But keep in mind that you don’t have to gift your session to anyone, but yourself. If for no other reason, do it for you. Just

So…what to do with those photographs after a boudoir session? The possibilities are endless! Whether you get them bound into an album for yourself or your significant other, or order a few prints to hang in the privacy of your bedroom, the choice is yours!

When deciding to add boudoir, photographers get swept up into thinking that elaborate equipment, a full off camera lighting setup and a large, beautiful studio are needed to book boudoir sessions.

the natural light kiss some skin. But there are a few tips you need to know to make this work.

Will those things help you create beautiful images for your clients? Definitely. Are these things necessary? Absolutely not. You Don’t Own Your Own Studio? No Problem! If you don’t have your own studio, you have options. You can turn any room into a studio with just an air mattress and white sheets.

To have well-lit images, have your subject face the light. Unless you want to work with shadows, always make sure their faces find the light. Whether it’s directly in front of them, or off to this side, play with it to give different moods. But if you place your bed in front of the window, your images will be backlit. Remember, their faces should always find the light.

Yes, it’s that simple. Clear your space by moving all furniture to another side of the room, place your mattress next to a window, with the light facing the bed, we’ll talk more about this later, and add your sheets. Bam, you have the prefect, simple setup. But if you’d prefer a full bedroom, you can replace any mattress with the air mattress. The air mattress is mobile, quick and with the purchase a few set of sheets that are only to be used for your boudoir sessions, you’re good to photograph a session anywhere. You can also rent hotel rooms for your sessions. But when picking your room, make sure your room has ample natural lighting from the windows. Speaking of, natural Light is your best friend. If you have a space with windows, open the blinds, pull back the shades and let

When working inside, make sure your ISO is high enough to give you a balances exposure triangle. Depending on the overcast or time of day, you’ll be shooting anywhere from 400 to 800 ISO. Just make sure you always check it when setting your exposure.

You don’t need a full rack of lingerie. You can use a few things you both already have or can purchase inexpensively. Have your clients bring bra and panties that makes them feel most beautiful. I always suggest boy shorts. I also tell them to bring their favorite oversized sweater, or a shirt from their significant other’s closet, if they’re gifting them their photos. I always grab cheap, ribbed tees. Lastly, I use the sheets to drape around the client’s body for implied nude. You can spend about $25 total on props and achieve so much. Work with what you have until you get to where you want to go. It’s your confidence, skills and business practices that make you great, not your gear.

This is the most important part of session. There is where we you are able to get the expectationa your client has as well as set the expectations for her.

Every woman can agree that a cute outfit and makeup can make your day go from drab to fab. The same holds true for a boudoir session. Suggesting that your client have a professional makeup application can boost your clients confidence which will lead to a better session.

P R O T I P The number one

choices for curvy girls are the “Baby Doll” and the “High Waisted” panty and bra set. Both minimize the mid section and allow you to excentuate the legs, busts and boudies (which are typically the most loved parts of a curvy girl).

MOOD BOARD

2

Your client has choosen you as their photographer because of your existing body of work, but it doesn’t hurt to ask them to give you a mood board for inspiration (think pinterest). Having the client give you an idea of what they consider to be sexy will help you translate that into your images. P R O T I P The number one thing

I have my clients search for are phrases such as “classy boudoir.” It gives a variety of poses that are focused on different body parts.

This time with you should be a Life Celebration! Make sure you are creating an environment where your client feels comfortable and safe to express themselves. By creating an atmosphere of fun, the client will remember what a GREAT time she had with you while creating awesome images.

POSING

4

For some of us, this is where we get the most nervous during the shoot...and rightfully so! This is where steps 1-2 come into play! Having an understanding what you client loves most about her body and the mood board of what she defines as sexy should guide your entire session.

P R O T I P During your

consultation, have your client provide you with a playlist of her favorite songs. Ask her what she normally listens to when she is getting ready for a night out with girlfriends. I promise, there is nothing better than having a happy and confident woman jamming to her favorite tunes in front of your lens!

P R O T I P Become a posing pro!

If you can mirror the poses for your client, they will understand better – it also givse clients a more confidence because you position yourself as an expert in front of and behind the camera.

THE BOUDOIR ISSUE

The self-love revolution took over the internet in 2017, and I didn’t think I’d ever identify with these people.

Self-love to me didn’t include bubble baths and trips to Sephora. Self-love was rarely poetic and practical. To me, self-love was forcing myself to come to terms with who I was, and committing to the fact that I was worthy, regardless of the worth that I was assigned by other parties. My assignment was forgiving myself for not meeting standards that were grossly unattainable, despite setting them myself. It was understanding that one bad interaction did not mean I was incapable of romance, and did not mean that I was unlovable. This was no paved road, it was a backwoods trip to hell…if I were being honest. Authenticity isn’t always pretty, and mine was no exception. I was committed to loving myself so fiercely, that there would be no question on what I deserved from someone else. I had spent so long living under the “if you just lost some weight” mentality. As if a number on a scale would somehow give me the validation to be respected? I got this idea that I could love myself just like I was, in a body that I swore wasn’t worthy. Acting on the idea was an entirely different venture. I toyed with the idea of boudoir for a bit, but I finally bit the bullet and I’m so glad I did. We’ll disregard the fact that I almost backed out at least 10 times in the 5 days before the shoot, and the 4,000 messages my friends received of me in total meltdown mode. I went through with it, and that’s the point here. As far as the session itself, I could go on for days. I’ll leave it with this – It is IMPOSSIBLE to not feel good about yourself when you have someone standing 5 feet

from you telling you what an absolute goddess you are. You cannot beat that feeling. I wanted to bottle the entire experience up and take it home with me. I got a set of my files shortly after our session, and to be honest – I couldn’t open them. I kind of just sat there for a minute and looked at the link. Kind of when you dial a number and han. I couldn’t do it. I knew that if I opened them, and hated my body, this would be one big back pedal on all of the progress I’d made, and I was terrified. I opened them. I sobbed. I have never, in my life, felt so damn pretty. My eyes didn’t go straight to the parts of my body that I hate. I didn’t automatically start picking myself apart. I saw that sparkle again, the sparkle I thought that I lost forever. I saw my worth. I saw the love, not for someone else, but for me. I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face – if you make one investment in yourself in your lifetime, make it boudoir. Don’t wait until you lose that last 20lbs, or until you get rid of the cellulite on your ass. Don’t do it for your partner. Don’t do it for valentines. Do it for you. D O I T F O R YO U 1 . If you are on the fence about professional hair and

makeup, do it. DO IT. 1000x over, DO. IT. Don’t drink coffee that week, bring your lunch, whatever you have to do to make it happen. It was so nice to be able to sit back and relax while someone else tamed my mane and I didn’t have to stress about getting my lashes even with shaky hands. So, so nice. I wasn’t rushed, I wasn’t frazzled over something I couldn’t find. 2 . Lingerie does not have to be expensive, and lingerie

doesn’t even technically have to be lingerie. Boudoir isn’t all lace and frills. Wear something that makes you feel like a million bucks, even if it only cost 3 . Find a photographer that you jive with. Someone who

doesn’t view you as another post to add to their Pinterest board. Someone who values you as a person, not a dollar. Someone who gets what you are going for, and who loves what they do.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This means that everyone sees things differently. What I see as a beautiful flower, may look like a dying weed to you. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder then who is the person with the meter to distinguish who is fat or skinny? The world considers anyone with a slightly curvy figure to be fat and anyone who shaped like a stick sexy. Studies show that 94% of teenage girls have been bullied or body shamed merely for how they look. Body shaming causes low self-esteem, unhealthy eating habits, depression, social anxiety and sometimes suicide. Body shaming is not exclusive to teenage girls. While most teenage boys are confident in how they look, they too, fall victim to body shaming. Teenagers who have been body shamed grow up to be adults with negative body issues. It is important to help teenagers develop a positive body image so that no matter what situation they are in,

who they have to stand against, and no matter what anyone says about them, they are great just the way they are. The essential factor in raising teenagers with a positive body image is having someone to instill self-love and selfcare in them. There are resources to help them, but the most important support is you. Love yourself!! That’s the million dollar question for many brides when they’re trying to think of something unique and heartfelt to give to their soon-to-be hubby. Let’s face it; YOU are absolutely the best gift that he will ever receive! I’m more than certain that by the time he makes it to your highly anticipated wedding day, that he already knows it. However what can you give him before the nuptials are exchanged and the vows are sealed with a kiss to solidify your blessed union that lets him know that HE is on your mind? I’ve seen all types of meaningful gifts – cigars, an engraved flask, a creative piece of artwork that reflects milestone dates, a watch, or a heartfelt letter. The options are seemingly endless. Yet one thing is certain. If you venture to do this, you will surely light a fire within him! So ditch the traditional gifts and consider giving him an album filled with intimate and sexy portraits of you that you would both cherish for years to come. Now before you freak out, I’m not saying that you have to go all out and bare your birthday suit, but if that’s your thing then by all means go for it. Your bridal boudoir portraits can be subtle, playful and funny or sexy. Really, it’s a tease for your future hubby of what is to come. Can you just imagine the look on his face and the excitement that gets sparked when he unveils the beautifully wrapped gift to find stunning portraits of HIS soon-to-be wifey? Yessss!! This is a time to express yourself and let your personality shine. This photo session is just as much for you as it is for him. So grab your favorite photographer and go for it. Embrace all that is beautiful and unique about you and have fun while doing it.

AN INTERVIEW WITH PHOTOGRAPHER, JALEEL KING

What does being body positive mean to you? It means being comfortable with the fact your “imperfections” are apart of you and someone loves them and you regardless. The hard part is learning to love them yourself which is still a struggle at times for me. I have scars everywhere so I can understand why people might feel apprehensive when it comes to looking at yourself. We can be our own worst judge for some of the silliest reasons.

H O W D I D YO U G E T S TA R T E D I N P H OTO G R A P H Y ?

I wish I could point to something that stands out but I can’t. I remember taking photos with a point and shoot of random people and things. Then one day, a friend of my mom’s, Mr. Benny, came to visit me and he saw some photos I had taken. He asked if I really liked photography which I replied, “Yes, but I only have this camera (point and shoot)”. Next thing I knew we were at his house where he pulled out a bag of camera gear (Canon AE-1) and gave it to me, I haven’t stopped since.

I’ve become more confident with my place in the world to a point and what my legacy could be to others. While at the same time, I’ve become more comfortable in my own abilities regardless of the challenges in front me. Being able to capture moments that live beyond me is amazing but not as amazing as the lives I’ve touched or been a part of due to photography. I still struggle at times with my direction but it’s also a great part of the adventure and journey I’ve found myself on. Moody. I think I’m honestly just figuring it out myself. I tend to let the images dictate mood for me. There are times when I want things bright and other times when I need them to be darker. At that point it’s the viewer’s turn to create the story or feel something from the work I’ve put forth. W H O O R W H AT H A S I N S P I R E D YO U A N D YO U R P H OTO G R A P H Y J O U R N E Y ?

Then, every so often, I get a random thank you email or someone who’s been watch from afar comes up to tell me how much I mean to them. I don’t think people understand how important that can be at times nor how inspiring it can be when I have those down moments. W H AT I N S P I R E D YO U TO L A U N C H YO U R N E W P R O J E C T ?

I came across images by Olivier Fermariello called Je t’aime moi aussi a few years ago which I loved. I wanted to see what I could do to put my own spin on the subject from an American perspective as well as being someone who is disabled as well. American’s have a different

So my friend Rob Timko said I had to do a self-nude to add legitimacy to my project. More or less how could I ask others to do what I was unwilling to do myself? My body isn’t perfect and I felt Rob’s point was valid but it took me some time to build up the nerve to do it. Eventually, I found a moment where I stopped overthinking and just went for it. At first I couldn’t believe I did it. Then I had to come to terms with my own body and how I’m perceived. That was the hardest part because people can really be over the top at times. However, the more I looked at the image from an artist point of view I became less self-aware of my perceived flaws. This allowed me to love the image more for what it is while being more comfortable with myself. I still have

THE BOUDOIR ISSUE

Have you heard the saying “We never appreciate what we have when we have it?” Often times when we are in our twenties, we under appreciate the body and health that we have. Our minds are all over the place. In our thirties we begin to realize our inner and outer beauty. We begin to embrace who we are, but we wish “something” was different. In our forties we develop a “forget it!” mentality. We celebrate who we are, what we have been through and where we are going. We realize that we don’t have to look like the twenty year old or the thirty year old. Hell, we don’t have to look like another 40 year old. We embrace who we are and how we look. While I don’t consider myself a boudoir photographer, I wanted to give it a try. I had some studio time to use and I had recently worked with 3 models that were beautiful and pleasant to work with. One model was available and I’m so glad that she was the one. It was easy and comfortable for the both of us. It was encouraging and uplifting. It was professional, yet I felt like I was hanging out with a close friend. I got the impression that she felt the same way. We shared another first that day. It was our first time shooting in a studio. As an artist, this was my first boudoir shoot and I look forward to the next one. These images were taken using natural light in a studio. An external flash on camera was used for some images. As a plus size woman in my forties, the shoot was therapeutic and a great reminder to love my own body. These images should be a true reminder to embrace who we are. Embrace the beauty that our mind, body and soul projects. We don’t have to be industry curvy to love ourselves. What we see when we look in the mirror dictates what everyone else sees. Beauty, confidence and appreciation come in all sizes and colors. Appreciate what you have when you have it. Love the body your in and the mind will follow.
