Yin and Yang Cultural Center is not a building with a specific function, it is a public plaza for interacting, communicating and practicing different activities. It is the connection between Maspero’s community and the tourists outside this community. It is an outdoor project to enhance the environment of Maspero.

Darb Al-Ahmar Center is located in an ancient district with a complex urban fabric and surrounded by historical monuments. The residents of this area are neglecting the value of the place they raised in, besides the crafts that their predecessors used to work and live from it. The Revival Center brings the handicrafts to life.

Main roads in the site.

Main nodes.

Creating pure shape.

Integrating plan with the surroundings

Main axis.

Touristic ramp zone.

Grid from the existing buildings for the community zone.

Existing buildings according to the buildings conditions. Existing buildings in the project.

Y I N & YA N G I L L U S T R AT I O N

The first floor of the existing building used as a waiting area for the conference hall, the waiting area connects between the gallery and the conference hall, so that the existing building acts like a bridge between two new buildings, and also the ground floor of another existing building in the area is used as a cafe, and that serves the concept well.

The Touristic Zone on +4.00, +5,00 and +6,00 levels contains permanent exhibitions, temporary exhibitions, panoramic restaurant, gallery, conference zone and cafe, and that represents the YANG ‘waterfront buildings’. The Community Zone on 0.00 level contains bazaars, “qahwa” (public cafeteria for the community with a traditional style), mosque and waiting area for the workshops, and that represents the YIN ‘community context of Maspero’. There are two different zones With two different types of users, but the idea of the ramp as a main zone is illustrating the condition of Maspero that is The Land of Disparity and Diversity but in a way that serves the community not the opposite.

Y I N & YA N G I L L U S T R AT I O N

The style of the touristic buildings is different from the community buildings but there is integration between both styles.

STREET INTERACTION

From noticing the behavior of the community in Maspero, the life is in the streets not in the buildings and that makes the street a place for social network and interaction, the street is a place for selling and buying daily goods, a place of special occasions; weddings, funerals and festivals, a playground for kids, seating and waiting areas. So the main zone in the project is the main plaza where the different activities occur in it and all the zones are connected with it.

STREET INTERACTION

The pavilion zone embraces different occasions during the night. The open space allows outdoor weddings at night.

STREET INTERACTION

The pavilion zone is a place for celebrating such as; celebrating “Ramadan -Muslim celebration- by gathering and eating together at the sunset.

STREET INTERACTION

The pavilion zone witnesses several parties during the day for example; “Al-Tanora dance, it is a traditional dance that brings joy and happiness to whom watch it.

STREET INTERACTION

The projection zone is the part of the project that the markets’ walls are designed to change its direction to create different directions of projection screens that displays cultural information about Maspero land in specific and Egypt in general. Also the walls can be transformed into shading devices for sitting.

STREET INTERACTION

The market zone contains shading markets and street vendors that sell local products and the workers are the resident of Maspero.
