Kei Ishiyama brings these classic tales to life in this beautiful manga collection straight from TOKYOPOP Germany. • Little Red Riding Hood • Rapunzel • Hansel and Gretel • The Two Brothers • The Twelve Huntsmen • Snow White • The Frog King • Puss in Boots • The Singing, Springing Lark
COVER NOT FINAL
THE HISTORY OF FOLKLORE The Brothers Grimm assembled the most famous collection of European folktales in the world. The first edition had 86 stories, but by the seventh release they had 211! The stories were edited over the years too; while some of them were made more child friendly, a lot of the punishments doled out to villains actually got more violent. The brothers believed society is shaped by its folktales and storytelling, and while we think of these fairytales as children’s stories, they started out as pretty dark and cautionary tales for adults. Not everyone lived happily ever after, after all!

Once upon a time in a land far, far away is a whole other world of Disney magic! When Belle and the Beast married, they united all the surrounding kingdoms into the United States of Auradon and imprisoned the villains on a remote island known as the Isle of the Lost. Protected by a barrier that prevents all magic, the inhabitants begrudgingly eke out an existence and raise their families, plotting for the chance to escape and regain their former glory. Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos are four descendants of these villains, raised under the banner of evil and striving to survive as they’ve been taught. While the children of the heroes get to live in peace and tranquility, Prince Ben – who is soon to be crowned king – decides that his first proclamation as ruler will be to give a select few of the kids from the Isle of the Lost a chance to redeem themselves and prove that they are more than the sins of their parents. Seeking this chance for glory, the villain kids agree to attend Auradon Prep while plotting to steal Fairy Godmother’s Magic Wand and free their parents from captivity. Will the rebel teens follow in their rotten parents’ footsteps or will they choose to embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?

BELLE’S TALE Showing Belle’s innermost thoughts, this manga follows her journey as she learns that true beauty comes from within.
PRINCE CONCEPT This early sketch of the Prince needed a little more decoration and regal flair in his outfit.
BELLE CONCEPT Belle’s design was the most challenging, as we had to balance being faithful to the movie’s design while making sure she still had a manga feel. We think the artist did a fantastic job!

THE BEAST’S TALE Told from the perspective of the Beast, this manga explores his struggle as he tries to move on from his past and learn what it is to love.
GASTON CONCEPT Gaston’s legs got a little squished here so that the details of his costume were easy to show off.
BEAST CONCEPT The Beast was missing some of his infamous ferociousness in these sketches on the right. The sketch on the left was inspired by the moment in which Belle first encounters the Beast.

ABOUT THE CREATOR:
SOPHIE-CHAN
Born in Iraq, Sophie-chan became infatuated with shôjo manga at the tender age of seven. With dreams of becoming a manga artist herself, she began teaching herself to draw using her favorite shows as inspiration and refusing to give up. Even as she studied to become an engineer she kept drawing, then in 2008 she started a YouTube channel to show off her artwork, which has since amassed an audience of 370k subscribers, with fans of her original creations all around the world! Now living in Canada with her family, Sophie-chan proves that with hard work, patience and sheer determination you can realize your dreams and she continues to inspire others with her incredible story.
CREATOR Q&A 1. What were your favorite manga/anime growing up? What were the titles that sparked your interest in becoming an artist? In my early teens, I was a big fan of Digimon and Detective Conan. I later discovered Death Note, Code Geass and Black Butler which really inspired me to have my own Manga series. 2. How did you teach yourself to draw? Did you use books, or was it lots and lots of practice? It was mainly by drawing a lot. I’d look at anime characters and try to use them as a reference. I did follow few tutorials online and have bought couple of how to draw books. I was also experimenting with different art supplies and trying out as many programs as I can afford to enhance the quality of my art.. 3. How did you keep yourself from getting discouraged early on in your art? Do you have any advice for budding young artists? I wasn’t seeking approval from anyone, I was drawing as a hobby and thought that as long as I’m enjoying it, I don’t need anyone to praise my work or support it. I knew I will get better in time and believed in myself. My advice to upcoming artists is to not compare yourself to anyone and keep doing what you like. 4. Who are your art/writing inspirations? Who are the people that you look up to? I was inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s films especially Howl’s Moving Castle, I was inspired by Yana Toboso (Black Butler) and Jun Mochizuki (Pandora Hearts) .
5. How do you feel about fan art and fan fiction? Would you be excited if people wrote or drew their own original stories with your characters or worlds? I always feel happy when I see fan arts of my characters. It shows that they like my manga and that gives me a motivational boost. The only time I felt uncomfortable was when someone used my character design and style as “their” character. They later realized it’s too similar to mine and plagiarism won’t take you far. 6. Where did the idea for Ocean of Secrets come from? How did it evolve over the time you were working on it? The story changed so much with time. I’m thinking of illustrating how much it changed in a video but would contain too many spoilers. Initially, I was drawn to the ocean, to the level that, I could have been a sailor in my past life. I was also a big fan of fantasy and mystery. If you combine these genres together, along with a spice of drama, the Ocean of Secrets is born. A major change, for example, was was sailing away with her father her brother Albert. Oh, and here incredible change, originally, the during the 1800s.

HOW TO BE A PRINCESS The Disney princesses each have a valuable lesson to teach Kilala about what it means to be a princess and grow as a person. As she travels from world to world and her story unfolds, here are some of the things she learns along the way.
SELFLESSNESS & KINDESS Prepared to sacrifice herself to protect Kilala and Rei, Snow White shows her that being selfless and putting others first is an admirable quality.
COURAGE & COMPASSION Refusing to show fear in the face of the Beast’s temper, Belle shows Kilala what it means to be brave and stand up for yourself while showing compassion for others.
CONFIDENCE & CURIOSITY With her beautiful singing voice and unbridled curiosity, Ariel shows Kilala how to have confidence in yourself and appreciate who you are, even when you feel alone.
INNER BEAUTY & DETERMINATION Cinderella knows that true beauty comes from within, and shows Kilala that having manners and graces are just a small part of being a princess; it’s what’s on the inside that really counts!
TRUST & LOYALTY Eager to explore a world she’s never experienced, Jasmine trusts Aladdin wholeheartedly. It’s this trust that reminds Kilala to believe in Rei – and in herself.
FAITH & LOVE Aurora had faith in her forbidden relationship and teaches Kilala to stay strong and trust that she’s on the right path, even when she’s discouraged.

Rapunzel has lived inside an isolated tower all her life, able to see the world outside her window but forbidden to leave. When the notorious thief Flynn Rider shows up, she makes a deal with him to finally break free and experience the world outside her prison. Is the world as scary as Mother Gothel promised it would be? Or will she find the answers behind her magical, flowing hair and the truth about her childhood?
THE LEGEND OF RAPUNZEL
A beloved children’s tale, the story of Rapunzel was popularized by the Brothers Grimm in the early 19th Century, though the story itself has existed in European folk legend since the 17th Century, and there’s even a similar story in Persian storytelling from the 10th Century! In the Brothers Grimm version, Rapunzel’s parents are caught stealing rampion leaves from a witch’s garden. She agrees to let them take as much as they want, in exchange for their baby after its birth. Naming Rapunzel after the German word for the vegetable her parents craved so much, the witch locks the baby up in a tower with no door. © Disney
Many years later, Rapunzel’s beautiful singing voice catches the attention of a passing prince and the two fall in love, plotting to elope together. The witch finds out about their romance and blinds the prince, then cuts off Rapunzel’s hair and casts her out into the wilderness. Years later the blind, wandering prince overhears Rapunzel singing and the two tearfully reunite. Rapunzel’s tears of joy restore the prince’s sight, and they return to his kingdom to live happily ever after.

Dance?
Magical Dance is an adorable manga, but did you know it’s also a dancing game? Disney Magical Dance on Dream Stage was a collaboration between Disney and Sega, and the game popped up in arcades around Japan in 2007. Players danced along with characters on the screen, stepping in time to the music on a special dance pad. They could even scan Magical Dance playing cards to unlock their favorite Disney characters! Dancing games have been popular in Japan for years, and have even shown up in arcades and homes around the rest of the world too! They’re a great way to get exercise and have fun at the same time!
ダンスダンスレボリューション DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION Probably the most famous of all dance machines, Dance Dance Revolution (also known as DDR) was a worldwide hit and a must-have in arcades in the 2000s. With a mix of fast-paced music that ranged from dance beats to heavy rock, it’s a great workout for arcade fans. Some dancers would do handstands and flips to entertain crowds, and some got good enough to dance with their back to the screen! Dance Dance Revolution
パラパラパラダイス PARA PARA PARADISE Para Para Paradise was inspired by a dance style called Para Para. By learning each song’s dance moves, players would move their arms through the machine’s sensors and earn points for getting it right.Withits exciting Eurobeat music and colorful characters, Para Para Paradise was a huge hit in Japan, though it was never quite took off elsewhere. Para Para Paradise
太鼓の達人 TAIKO NO TATSUJIN While it’s not actually a dancing game per se, Taiko no Tatsujin (known as Taiko: Drum Master in the west) is an arcade version of a traditional Japanese drum dance called taiko. Players would come up with dances and spins, trying to add their own flourish as they beat on the drums with sticks to wellknown pop songs. This one is definitely harder than it looks! BURTON Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King, the ruler of Halloween Town and master of all things creepy and spooky. But he’s tired of his life in the shadows and longs for something new. When he accidentally stumbles upon Christmas Town, he decides this is the perfect chance to try his hand at a brand new holiday and is convinced he’ll have the world yelling “Scary Christmas”! With the young patchwork doll Sally trying to dissuade him and the evil Oogie Boogie waiting in the wings to take over Halloween Town in Jack’s absence, he’d better hurry if he wants to get his plan in place by December 25th!
WHAT’S THIS? Did you know Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas started out as a poem? Written back in 1982, it tells the same basic story as the movie, though it’s missing a few familiar faces. According to Burton, part of the inspiration for the concept came from seeing the overlap in holiday decorations in stores!
DID YOU KNOW... There was an alternate ending to the movie, revealed in deleted scenes? The monstrous Oogie Boogie was revealed not to be a sack of bugs, but Dr. Finkelstein in disguise! And he would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for that darn skeleton... Art by: Jun Asuka Special collector’s manga: $15.99 Softcover: $10.99 Digital edition: $6.99

Alice Kingsleigh was a young girl when she visited the magical world of Underland for the first time. Now a teenager, she spots a white rabbit at a garden party and tumbles down a hole after him where she is reunited with her old friends - though she doesn’t remember her adventures as a child. Alice soon learns it is her destiny to end the Red Queen’s reign of terror and slay the fearsome Jabberwocky.
Weird WORDS Alice is fated to slay the Jabberwocky, a terrifying creature that resembles a dragon. But she also faces the frumious Bandersnatch, slithy toves and outgrabing mome raths. Just what are these strange beasts and where’d they get their names? A decade before he published Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll wrote the first verse of his nonsense poem, Jabberwocky. There are many theories about his inspiration and the message behind the story, but no one knows for sure what exactly inspired him to come up with such weird and wonderful words! In fact, we even use some of them today: words like chortle, galumph and whiffle all came from this poem, which ended up being published in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.

ABOUT THE CREATOR: M. ALICE LEGROW Did you have a mentor or hero in the industry that inspired you to pursue a career in comics?
What advice would you give to someone who wants to work making their own manga?
“Probably my professors at Savannah College of Art and Design, especially Paul Hudson, who not only worked in comics, but also with the FBI, NASA, Disney and so many other ridiculously big names.”
“Deadlines are sometimes more important than talent. There’s a vast number of talented professionals, but a much smaller number of talented people who can work within a professional setting to meet production demands. So I always advise younger artists and writers to cultivate their work ethic and reception to constructive criticism, as well as their regular skills.”
Check out these amazing sets the author made! See if you can spot them in the background of Bizenghast.

JAPANESE GHOST STORIES
Every culture has its fair share of scary stories, and Japan is no different. Here we’ll introduce you to some of their most well-known ghosts and urban legends!
花子さん・HANAKO-SAN Every elementary school student in Japan knows about Hanako-san. Legend says that you must go to the girl’s bathroom on the third floor and knock three times on the door of the third stall, then ask “Hanako-san, are you there?” and she’ll appear.
Hanako-San - Yokai Watch
手の目・TE-NO-ME This story tells of a blind man who was beaten and left for dead by robbers. He was angry that his eyes couldn’t see, and lamented that if he had eyes in his hands he could have seen the robbers coming. As he died, he was so angry that he turned into a vengeful spirit with eyes in the palms of his hands, killing anyone he comes across. Now that he has eyes, he is blinded by rage. Te No Me - GeGeGe No Kitaro
雪女・YUKI ONNA The “snow woman” is a spirit who died in the snow, and only appears in harsh winter weather. She’s very pale, has a pure white kimono and long black hair and floats along the snow leaving no trace behind. She leads people away from trails and breathes on them to cause hypothermia, sealing their doom in the cold, bleak snowstorm. Yuki Onna - Vampire Princess Miyu
口裂け女・KUCHISAKE ONNA The “slit-mouthed woman” was mutilated by her husband and now wanders the streets asking people if they think she’s pretty. If they say no, she kills them but if they say yes, she cuts their face to match hers.
