NW Ohio ar tists unite to ben the free Red Cross concert with several acts at 7 p.m. June 23 at Hollywood Casino Toledo. I believe Eddie Boggs would busk on a street corner with a hat on the ground for these charities if we asked him. The musicians in goLab, Nine Lives, The Sanderlings, Arctic Clam, Buck69, Old State Line and The Bradberries comprise an army of great music and generous spirits. We are also making new friends with each new project. Free concert to launch Red Cross CD Hollywood Casino Toledo will host a free concert 7-10 p.m. June 27 in the H Lounge, featuring acts that contributed to the Red Cross “Red, White & You” CD. The mother of missing 18-monthold Elaina Steinfurth was seen leaving between midnight and 1 a.m. the morning of the toddler’s disappearance. Dennis Bolfa, who lives across from the East Toledo home in the 700 block of Federal Street where the toddler was last seen, said he saw Elaina’s mother, Angela Steinfurth, and her boyfriend Steven W. King leave in their van and return 10-15 minutes later. ELAINA STEINFURTH On June 12, police seized the van Bolfa saw the couple leaving in. “I thought they were just going to get cigarettes or something,” he said. “It didn’t dawn on me at the time.” When Bolfa was interviewed by Toledo Free Press on June 18, he had not yet reported this information to the FBI or police. Bolfa said he believes Angela was involved in the disappearance. “A couple days before, she said, ‘[Elaina’s father Terry Steinfurth Jr.] ain’t getting my kid,’” Bolfa said. “She’s got something to do with it, no doubt.” Elaina was reported missing on the afternoon of June 2, just hours after Bolfa saw the van leave the home. Steinfurth Jr. came to pick up his daughter between noon and 1 p.m. at the home on Federal Street. An argument ensued when Angela refused to give him Elaina, according to several witnesses. “They woke me up with their arguing between noon and 1 p.m. I had been taking a nap,” Bolfa said. “They were yelling back and forth, and [Steinfurth Jr.] kept saying, ‘I want my kid! I want my kid!’” Almost an hour after the start of the argument, Angela went in to get Elaina but came out “crying and screaming” that Elaina was gone, according to Terry Steinfurth Sr. The family began searching the area for Elaina. They called the police when she could not be found. Bolfa said “something wasn’t right” about Angela’s initial reaction. “She was pacing up and down the street, and then she walked up to me and asked for a cigarette. She went from crying to smiling. you go from fake crying to a smile?” he said. “Something ain’t right there. If I lost my kid, I wouldn’t be asking for a cigarette. That’s a crock of sh*t. If it was my kid, I’d be going crazy.” Angela is detained on child endangerment charges. Her bond has been set at $250,000. Police and other groups are searching for the missing toddler. Toledo Police and the FBI are offering a reward of $10,000 for information leading to her whereabouts.
Allegations of abuse
According to claims of multiple witnesses in the Federal Street neighborhood where the toddler was last seen, Angela verbally abused Elaina and was physically abusive toward her other daughter, 4. “She would slap the oldest in the face, tore her hair,” said Julie King, mother of Angela’s boyfriend Steven. “She was rough, very rough. She would yank her up by the arm.” Julie Malkin, public information officer of Lucas County Children
Services, said that children services responded to a call regarding Angela and Elaina’s father earlier this spring. “We investigated a situation where we were concerned about the children being exposed to domestic violence,” Malkin said. “In this case, the worker felt the situation had resolved itself.” Angel Zam, a family friend, said she heard Angela screaming at Elaina. “I’ve seen her be abusive, have heard her scream [to Elaina], ‘You little bastard!’ You know, stuff you just don’t say,” she said. “She was really abusive to the kids. She had a lot of issues. I felt sorry for her.” Zak Zam, Angel’s son, said he witnessed similar incidents. “She just seemed very violent toward the [4-year-old daughter]. Slapped her across the face, said, ‘You little b*tch.’ Those are some of the worst things that I’ve seen,” he said. Ginger Smith, Elaina’s cousin, assists volunteers by offering food and drink to search parties. “I know the mother wasn’t a very nice mother. She yelled at them and
was always cussing,” she said. Angela’s treatment of the two girls was the final straw in Steinfurth Jr.’s decision to end his relationship with her, according to the elder Steinfurth. “I have seen her smack, yell, scream at [the 4-year-old]. I flat out told her I don’t agree with it. I was very happy when [Steinfurth Jr.] said he was going to try to take custody,” Steinfurth Sr. said. Angel said Angela would leave Elaina alone for hours at a time. “That baby was in the playpen for 20 out of 24 hours. I feel so bad because I didn’t do anything. I feel ashamed,” she said. Julie King said she wanted Steinfurth Jr. to take custody of the two girls. “I said to T.J., ‘You gotta do something,’” Julie said. “I’ll help you but something’s gotta be done. I’ll do anything to help you.’” Julie said she had considered calling Lucas County Children Services, but hesitated. “I didn’t want to see the kids go through the system,” she said.
Angela had previously lived with Julie for a few months, and Julie said that time together “made me hate my house.” She also said Angela regularly smoked marijuana. “She’d do it a few times a day, if she could afford it. She’d go to people’s houses,” Julie said. Federal Street residents said they see news crews almost daily now that the story has found a national audience. Nearby residents have faced house searches and police questioning. “It’s an inside job on the mom, if you ask me,” said Federal Street resident Terry Luce. “She’s all happy and smiling. That mom messed the baby up.” Smith, who assists volunteers by offering food and drink to search parties, said the main focus is finding Elaina. “We ain’t here to worry about [Angela and Steven],” Smith said. “We just want to find the baby. The desire to create a “one-stop shop” to more efficiently serve commercial and industrial clients was the driving force behind the formation of a new Northwest Ohio real estate company. Five local businessmen recently joined forces to launch Industrial Developers Ltd. The company, which officially formed in June, will acquire, refurbish and market commercial and industrial properties in Ohio and nationwide, said managing partner Ed Harmon. Services offered will include development, brokerage, construction, property management and financial liaison services. Harmon, president of Columbusbased Harmon Family Development, is joined by longtime local real estate agent Dallas Paul, retired banker Lee Dunn, Spartan Logistics President Steve Harmon and Logan Creek Construction President James Howell. “Each member brings a unique set of skills tempered with years of business experience,” Harmon said. “Normally a company would have to go out and find a real estate agent, they’d have to find a developer, they’d have to find a general contractor, they’d have to find financing, leasing. They would have to work with the city, county or state for permitting, incentives, anything else available,” Harmon said. “We bundle it all together. If existing buildings do not fit a client’s needs, Industrial Developers will also offer the option of designing and building a customized facility, Harmon said. “With Logan Creek Construction Company, we can provide rehabilitation to an existing property or construct a facility to satisfy customer
needs,” Harmon said. “We can attract clients to occupy buildings as needed and assist in the management of those properties.” The ability to help clients secure financing also sets Industrial Developers apart, Dunn said. “Between the three of us (Dunn, Ed Harmon and Paul), we have a lot of experience working with banks and other forms of financing industrial properties,” Dunn said. Having all the pieces together inhouse ultimately saves clients time and money, Paul said. “We can bring the services of our

It already has several active clients, which Harmon declined to name, citing confidentiality agreements. He said he plans to hire more staff soon and eventually establish offices in other Ohio cities. “Success begets success,” Dunn said. “One satisfied customer talks to another. I’ve known Ed for many, many years and his phone rings off the hook. He doesn’t really have to market. They tend to come to him and I think that comes from years of dealing with very good, ethical standards and pro-

Spartan Logistics operates more than 2.5 million square feet of warehouse space in Ohio, Indiana and South Carolina and has its own truck fleet. A summer CD featuring local musicians is raising money for the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio. “Put-In-Bay,” “Help Me, Rhonda” and “Holy Toledo” are just a few of the songs on Toledo Free Press’ CD “Red, White & You,” featuring artists with local roots such as Crystal Bowersox, Alyson Stoner, Pat Dailey, Kerry Patrick Clark and Chrys Peterson. The CD, which cost less than $2,000 to produce and was paid for by sponsors, took hundreds of hours of work, combining the efforts of Toledo musicians, producers and businesses. “It was very important for 100 percent of the proceeds to benefit the Red Cross,” said Michael S. Miller, editor in chief of Toledo Free Press, who produced the CD. “This is specifically for disaster relief efforts. There’s always a demand for Red Cross services and there’s always a demand for funding.” The Red Cross Disaster Relief fund assists victims of natural disasters. The sale of each album allows the Red Cross to provide comfort kits to five victims of a disaster. “Put it in these terms: 1,000 CDs means help for 5,000 fire victims,” Miller said. The CDs are available at regional KeyBank locations, Frisch’s Big Boys and Ralphie’s restaurants and the gift shop at Hollywood Casino Toledo. “The CD costs $10, but there’s a $4 coupon in every CD,” Miller said. “So you’re getting two dozen songs for $6.”

Miller said the idea for “Red, White & You” followed the success of Toledo Free Press’ holiday benefit CDs. “For the past two years, we’ve assembled holiday CDs for the MakeA-Wish Foundation,” Miller said. “I’m a big believer in the Red Cross, and I contacted them to see if they were interested in making one for the summer.” Tim Yenrick, regional CEO of the Red Cross, said the organization was excited when they got the offer. “We really appreciate all the hard work Michael [Miller] has gone to in order to support the Red Cross,” Yenrick said in an email. “He’s really gone above and beyond to make this fundraiser a success for us.” Yenrick also said the project was unique in its conception and that the organization doesn’t see many fundraising projects of this scale. “This is the first time any Red

Cross chapter in the U.S. has created a benefit CD,” he said. “This is a fun project that allows us to spread the word about our services to the community while giving our supporters something in return.”
Time and money
Before production could begin on the CD, sponsors had to be found to cover the cost of the album.
“We approached the sponsors, A.A. Boos [Construction] and Bennett [Enterprises], up front. Both companies stepped up and put cash on the table,” Miller said. “We’re very fortunate to find such great sponsors.” Bennett Enterprises, which operates 13 Frisch’s Big Boys, eight Ralphie’s and four hotels in the Toledo area, will also distribute the CD at their restaurants.
“We’re very excited for the opportunity to be involved,” said Rob Armstrong, CEO of Bennett Enterprises. The company is known for its philanthropic efforts. “We give well over 600 donations per year to schools, libraries, hospitals, school sports and senior centers,” said Beth Hammond, director of marketing at Bennett Enterprises. In addition to its donations to local
institutions, the company has also worked with the Red Cross. “We’ve done a few things with the Red Cross before. We’ve had their bloodmobiles at our restaurants. [We] offer some goodies to try to pull [donors] in. [We’ll] offer free Big Boys to donors,” Hammond said. Armstrong expressed confidence in the sale of the CDs. n RED CROSS CD CONTINUES ON 10

Boos Construction, said his company is proud to be involved with the benefit CD. “I think of our company as very philanthropic. We do a lot of community outreach,” he said. “We get a lot of requests to be involved in philanthropic projects, so we have to choose which projects to get involved in. We really liked this project, and we like to support Toledo Free Press.” Hayes said one of the reasons A.A. Boos Construction became involved was the project’s musical focus. “Charlie Boos and I, we’re both musicians, and [we’re] very supportive of any charity that involves music. [Toledo Free Press] told me what they needed, and I made it happen,” Hayes said. Hayes, whose band Arctic Clam contributed a cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” to the CD, said he’s glad the project helps out the Red Cross and gives exposure to local bands. KeyBank of Northwest Ohio is offering its regional locations as distribution points for individuals to purchase the benefit album.

“Basically, we’re going to have the CDs available at our branches so our customers and members of the community can purchase them,” said Mark Knierim, regional marketing manager for KeyBank. “We support the Red Cross in a lot of different ways. We fundraise for disaster relief. We have employees who rotate on their board [of directors].” Like Hayes, Knierim said he appreciated the dual benefits of the fundraiser. “Of course, the main purpose is to help out the Red Cross,” Knierim said. “But we like to help see our community thrive.” The album is available at 40 Northwest KeyBank Ohio locations.
Behind the scenes at Firefly
The job of creating the album first fell to the artists, many of whom had never recorded in a studio setting before. They worked with local studios, like Firefly Studios, that ensured the high quality of the music. Brett Dennison, owner of Firefly Studios, said a recording session can take eight to 12 hours. Dennison donated a total of 65 hours of studio time for the CD. “Sessions are long, man,” he said. “Most of the time, one person is tracking at a time. If their performance isn’t quality, then we’ll keep working on it. Our goal is to yield high-end audio.”
Dennison said the process of creating a song in Firefly Studios involves recording each component of a song and then layering those tracks on top of one another. Dennison’s studio is filled with instruments available to musicians recording there and with analog mixing equipment, which Dennison said he prefers to digital mixing. “The gear contributes heavily to how the studio sounds the way it does,” he said. “It’s expensive and hard to maintain, but when you do all the mixing in the computer, it loses a lot. It’s like comparing a local TV commercial to a movie. It lacks that character that people really like.” Creating a song in Firefly Studios begins long before the actual recording starts. “First, there’s a meeting,” Dennison said. “We ask, ‘What’s the goal? What are we trying to do?” Once the song is mapped out, artists begin recording in the studio. “Most of the projects here are recorded to a metronome,” Dennison said. “The reason for that is to create tight, polished recordings. We’re always trying to do what’s best for the song, as opposed to doing it quickly.” “My job is to make it an entertaining experience,” he said. “I can help make the songs more exciting by changing the dynamics. I can use effects to make things more fun.” In addition to recording the music,

Dennison layered each track and engineered them into their final state. “I spent about 40 hours recording and 25 mixing,” he said. “Some songs are different. In ‘Help Me, Rhonda,’ our track count was up to 35 or 40 layers. That takes more time to track and mix. ‘California Sun’ only had 14 [layers].” Dennison said he is enthusiastic about the project. “I like to help, for sure. This was the first opportunity I’ve had on a professional level to do this,” he said. “It was a positive experience. I got to meet a lot of talented and bright people. I think a lot of people overlook talent on the local level.” Dennison also said he’s happy all the work he’s done will benefit the local Red Cross. “That’s why we did this,” he said. “Everything else is all bonus.”

Firefly Studios recorded five of the 23 artists on the benefit CD. Once all 23 songs were completed, they went to Unfeher Advantage Publishing Co. Ltd., where owner and audio engineer Mighty Wyte compiled the tracks. “Michael [Miller] put in a lot of time to collect music from many, many sources,” Wyte said. “The characteristics [of each song] are different. People record differently.” Those differences meant the songs varied in volume and consistency. “I’m quality control. I make sure

June 23, 2013 the volume’s right, that it’s not going to hurt your ears,” Wyte said. “I go through and make sure, from track to track, that the volume’s consistent.” Wyte said editing some tracks proved difficult. One that was particularly challenging was “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” recorded May 9 at Fifth Third Field. “When you turn it up, you turn up the noise too, so there’s only so much you can do,” he said. He said most of the tracks were already quality recordYENRICK ings before he edited them. “Luckily, we have recording studios around town that do a really good job,” Wyte said. “It makes my job easy.” Wyte said he spent about 15 hours editing the 23 tracks on the CD. “It’s complicated, but I enjoy doing it,” he said. Yenrick said the Red Cross is pleased with the project. “We can’t thank all of the artists, producers, musicians and all the other members of the Red Cross family enough for making this happen,” he said. “There are so many outstanding local musicians on this CD. I hope everyone picks one up and plays it all summer long.” O

Talking on the phone from California, Crystal Bowersox doesn’t sound like a 27-year-old music star. She sounds like a mom. “Quick, go get your shoes on!” she says to Tony, her 4-year-old son.“He’s 4 and a quarter. Don’t forget the quarter,” she laughs. Bowersox contributed “Holy Toledo,” one of her signature songs, to Toledo Free Press’ benefit album, “Red, White & You.” “I thought it’d be the best song for the cause,” she said. “When I play it in my hometown, people sing along to it. It doesn’t matter where I play, people sing along. I love that.” Three years after “American Idol,” Bowersox said she has learned a lot. “I would have definitely appreciated Toledo more if I knew what I do now, but I don’t live with regrets. I try not to live that way. I’m a big believer that everything happens for a reason,” she said. “You find a sense of normalcy. It’s nice to be working in the industry you want to work in.” Bowersox’s first album, “Farmer’s Daughter,” was released in 2010. Her latest album, “All That For This,” was released March 26. “It was just a collection of songs,” she said. “I’m always writing.” “All That For This” was produced by Steve Berlin, a member of the band Los Lobos. The album was recorded at Klickitat Studios in Portland, Ore. “I gave Steve access to the songs I’ve written since I was 10. He picked songs from 2006, songs that I never thought would be on an album,” Bowersox said. “All his work really created this sound I’d never heard before. He’s taken songs of mine and crafted them into incredible pieces of work.” Bowersox has also been chosen to portray country music legend Patsy Cline in a Broadway production of “Always ... Patsy Cline.” “Well, we, my team and I, got a call from a Broadway stage, asking if I wanted to play Patsy Cline,” she said. “I could not turn down an opportunity like that. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 6. “I try to help the JDRF (Junior Diabetes Research Foundation) in any way I can,” she said. “I want to help these kids and support the things they do. You know, you’re given a platform,

and if you don’t use it, that’s not cool.” Bowersox said she plans to continue writing, as well as working on her projects. “I’m working with a lot of writers I really admire. [They have] just really amazing talent,” she said. “I’ve got a really exciting project going on. I’m working on a Christmas song.” Bowersox lives in Los Angeles, but visits Toledo as often as she can. “I come back on a pretty regular basis. I live my life pretty
much the way anyone else would,” she said. “When I get back, I’m either getting tattoos at Infinite Art or hanging out around the bonfire, having some good family time. Being far away has its challenges. I’m sure my mom would like to see her grandson more often. With technology, though, like Skype, we make it work. If all my contacts were in Toledo, I’d live in Toledo.” Bowersox said she’s been through some challenges. On May 6, she and her
husband of two-and-a-half years, Brian Walker, announced their divorce. “Gracefully. I think that’s the only way you can deal with it,” Bowersox said. “You just try to take the high road and not say negative things. You just have to move on compassionately.” Her other challenge is balancing her career with her son. “[Tony] comes to shows and wants to be a little roadie. He gets to meet all kinds of different people and travel to all sorts of places,” she said.
“I think his life will be all the richer for these experiences.” Her son isn’t able to attend every concert, though, which means time spent apart. “It’s hard to be away, but it’s all for him,” she said. Bowersox said she hopes to come back to Toledo. “Someday I’ll be back home.” Until that day, people can hear her sing about the Glass City on the “Red, White & You” track “Holy Toledo.” O

Alyson Stoner sweetens the deal for benefit CD By Casey Harper

From movie sets to dance practices to recording studios, Alyson Stoner leads a busy life. She made time, however, to contribute her song “Sweet” to Toledo Free Press’ CD benefiting the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. “I’m honored to be a part of this project for Red Cross,” she said. “It’s the least I could do to help the victims of these recent tragic events. I hope it brings relief and belief back to the communities and country.” Stoner has performed in commercials and music videos from a young age. Now she entertains younger kids with her role as Isabella in Disney’s hit television show “Phineas and Ferb.” She hit the big screen with roles in “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “Camp Rock,” “Step Up” and “Step Up 3D.” Despite all the her projects, Stoner’s mother LuAnne Hodges says Stoner manages to maintain a normal life. “It’s not over the top where she can’t go to the mall,” Hodges said. “She still has a life and she’s a very grounded person. This is her own doing. It’s the way she wanted to conduct her life.”
Her donated track “Sweet” is available on her “Beat the System” album. “‘Sweet’ is a selfless acknowledgment that I’m not in control and that my joy rests in something beyond myself,” Stoner said. “It’s honest, yet optimistic — an attitude we could all use.” Stoner was 7 when she competed at the International Modeling and Talent Association convention in New York. After placing in several categories, she was encouraged to try auditioning in Los Angeles. “For nine months, my mother and I commuted between Hollywood and Toledo,” Stoner said. “Eventually, my family decided to jump in with both feet and relocate.” Stoner’s big break came when she got a part in Missy Elliott’s “Work it” music video. Stoner throws down hip hop dance moves throughout the video, holding her own among the older dancers. “From there, Eminem called her and then Will Smith wanted her,” Hodges said. “And she was 8 or 9 years old. That led to her Disney shows where they may have her dancing on there.” Stoner will appear in the films “The A-List” in 2013 and “Hoovey” in 2014. If the songs on “Red, White & You” give listeners the feeling of summer, there are few greater gifts as far as Christian rock artist Carmen Miller is concerned. “Summer for me has always been the time to unwind, to let loose,” Miller said. “It’s my ultimate party time. Me, I’m a girl who comes from Detroit, so my ideal time of year is 85 and sunny. You give me that, I’m good.” Miller’s joyous personality can be heard in every second of her track “Sacred Groove,” which was added to “Red, White & You” at the request of Toledo Free Press editor-in-chief Michael S. Miller. “Michael asked me. He had heard my CD ‘Skin and Bones,’ and he had thought the song ‘Sacred Groove’ would be an awesome fit for what they were doing for this compilation CD. So I was like, ‘Sure! Absolutely!’” Carmen’s passion for helping others is another reason she’s so excited about her song’s inclusion on “Red, White & You,” as she has personal ties to the Red Cross, the organization that will receive 100 percent of the CD’s proceeds. “I have friends and family who work with Red Cross, so it’s kind of near and dear to my heart,” Miller said. “And with all of the stuff that’s going on in, like, Oklahoma and all the different tragedies around, they need people who are willing to give. So if I could just give a song to support it, awesome.”

WTOL-11 news anchor Chrys Peterson has loved Otis Redding’s introspective summer tune “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” since her youth — making it the perfect choice for her “Red, White & You” track. “I was thinking of summer songs and for some reason, that one just came to me,” Peterson said, adding that Redding’s song was on one of the first 45s she owned. “I used to play that song all the time on my record player,” she recalled. With the help of local musicians Jeff Stewart and Chuck Mauk, Peterson was able to put her own spin on the classic song. “Nobody’s going to do it better than Otis Redding, so you just have to think, ‘How can I do it differently and make it fun?’” she said. The fact that the album benefits the American Red Cross of Northwest is also important to Peterson, who sits on the board of the organization. “It’s certainly something that’s near and dear to my heart,” she said. “Es-
pecially in my business, doing what I do every night and reporting on stories where we see people sometimes at their worst in times of disaster or fire, the Red Cross is always there with a helping hand.” The Emmy winner also said she appreciates that the CD showcases local talent. “We don’t even need ‘American Idol’ or ‘The Voice’ or any of those shows. We can just have our own show right here in Toledo,” she said with a chuckle. She added, “Red, White & You will give people an opportunity to hear the local singers and bands and make plans to go out and see them play.” Peterson sang in choirs in junior high and high school before joining a rock group in college. Since then, however, she hasn’t performed much aside from appearing on Toledo Free Press holiday CDs, benefiting MakeA-Wish Foundation. The anchor said of appearing on the Make-A-Wish and American Red Cross benefit CDs, “It’s a lot of fun. It’s just something that you feel great about doing.” O

Dailey, Adams, Boggs songs are ‘Put-In-Bay Trilogy’ By Evan Brune

As songs began rolling in for the “Red, White & You” CD, executive producer Michael S. Miller noticed a trend. “Several songs mentioned Put-InBay, but three songs mentioned it in the title,” said Miller, Toledo Free Press editor in chief. “We thought it would be fun to link them on the CD as a themed trilogy.”

Pat Dailey, who contributed his signature hit “Put-In-Bay” to the CD, has been playing music for 56 years. “In high school in 1957, I started a rock ’n’ roll band called Pat and the K-Tones,” he said. “We played sock hops. After high school, I went on the road by myself.” Dailey’s first experience in Toledo came during a trip from Chicago to Cleveland. He soon began performing in the city. “I came to Toledo in 1971,” he said. “When I’d play in Toledo, everyone told me about this place called Put-in-Bay.” Dailey began performing there not long after. “After the first week there, I realized this could be something,” he said. “I stuck with Put-in-Bay and went to Key West in the winter. It made a good career.” He wrote his best-known song, “Put-In-Bay,” in California. “I still used California as a home base. I wrote the song when I was out there,” he said. “When I came back to Cleveland, I played the song. Everyone went crazy. It made me a hometown guy. I think I captured the feel of it.” Dailey said he sees Put-in-Bay as the quintessential summer destination. “It’s because of the people who go there to have fun,” he said. “You don’t have to beat them over the head to
make them laugh. It’s just the Midwest having a good time. The stuff I do is perfect for that frame of mind.” Since the song’s debut, many other artists have written and sung about Put-in-Bay. “When I first came there, I saw all kinds of funny and wonderful things there were to write about,” Dailey said. “I think I started something up in the [Great] Lakes.” Eddie Boggs, another performer who donated a song, “Another PutIn-Bay Summer,” to “Red, White & You,” praised Dailey’s talent. “Pat is, without a doubt, one of the best entertainers around these parts,” Boggs said. Dailey said he was glad he could contribute to the album. “You know, it’s a great feeling, because I’m not doing all that much,” he said. “I’d be glad to do more. I hope they ask me to.” Boggs said that Dailey’s music contributed to Put-in-Bay’s popularity. “There’s no two ways about it, Pat Dailey made Put-in-Bay.”
Mike ‘Mad Dog’ Adams
Mike “Mad Dog” Adams partied hard in his teens, earning the nickname that has traveled with him throughout his career as a performer. “Oh, I got that when I was about 16 years old. I’d drink MD 20/20 wine, and the street name for that was ‘Mad Dog,’ so my friends called me ‘Mad Dog’. ” Adams contributed one of his signature songs, “Who Needs Margaritaville? (We Got Put-In-Bay),” off of his “Lake Effects” album to Toledo Free Press’ benefit CD, “Red, White & You.” “I was flattered I was asked [to contribute a song],” he said. “I’ve always been happy to help out. “I think everybody should give back when they can.” “Who Needs Margaritaville?” was born during a live show at the Round
House Bar at Put-in-Bay. “I was onstage at the Round House, and I had had a couple drinks, and I said, ‘Who needs Margaritaville? We Got Put-in-Bay!” Adams said. “People liked it, and we started writing that song right onstage. Some days, it’s just so laid-back, you can do that. I liked it so much, I didn’t want to let it go.” Adams said Put-in-Bay made the perfect summer venue to write about and perform in. “I guess Put-in-Bay is the Margaritaville of the Midwest. It’s been a great place to go and have a good time for over 100 years,” he said. “There’s something about going to an island that puts people in a great frame of mind. It’s all about boating and fun, and it’s a place where anybody can go to have fun.” Adams said playing music has always been a passion of his. “You know, I just wanted to play. I wanted to entertain people. I’m doing what I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid,” he said. “Sometimes, dreams can turn into nightmares, but I’m following my dreams. There’s a Chinese proverb that says, ‘Be happy in your work.’” He also hopes for the success of the Red Cross benefit album. “I hope they sell a million copies!” he said.
Eddie Boggs
Kentucky native Boggs has been singing since childhood. In the Toledo area, he’s known for more than two decades of entertainment at Putin-Bay. His experiences there led him to contribute the song “Another PutIn-Bay Summer” to the benefit CD. “In 1971, I moved to Toledo,” he said. “I started singing solo, but then I teamed up with Diane Scribner and Kerry Clark. Basically, I just started playing around nightclubs, country clubs, places like that.” Eventually, Boggs began performing at what would
become his signature venue. “I sang for 23 years at Put-in-Bay,” he said. “I sang at the Beer Barrel, and then I sang at the Boardwalk. I’d sing Friday and Saturday afternoon, and Pat [Dailey] would sing Friday and Saturday night. At that time, we were basically the only entertainment there. The crowds came down to the Beer Barrel.” Boggs describes his music as “middle-of-the-road folk.” “I play mostly cover music. I do just a bit of everything,” he said. “Music is something I love. The rewards from it are just beyond description. The people you meet, the places you travel to are phenomenal.” Boggs’ success as an area musician led to his inclusion on the “Red, White & You” CD. “Michael [Miller] sent me an email, asking if I wanted to contribute a song, and I said yes,” he said. “I think it’s a great cause, and I’m happy to be a part of it.” Boggs’ contribution, “Another Put-In-Bay Summer,” reflects his view of the island. “I did that song in the ’90s. People saw Put-in-Bay as a party island,” Boggs said. “I wanted to promote the idea that there are things there for families. It was fun to write, and I enjoyed writing it, and I enjoy singing it.” When he was asked to contribute a summer-themed song, Put-In-Bay came to mind. “Summer is about water. Being surrounded by water and seeing the boats come in is summer,” Boggs said. “You get people come in from all over the Eastern Seaboard. The nice part was you had people come back every year. It was like a reunion every year.” Boggs said he hopes the CD is a big success. “I hope it sells a ton, because it helps a charitable organization,” he said. “I’m honored that Michael asked me to be a part of it. Any recognition is just icing on the cake.” O

Toledo performer Kyle White contributed her summer song “August in Ohio” to Toledo Free Press’ “Red, White & You” album for the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio. “It’s important to the community that the Red Cross have support because they support the community if something happens,” White said. White is a staple of the Toledo music scene. She plays at least five times a week in the summer. In the month of June, she has played as many as 32 shows. White has developed this popularity in part by writing songs from her heart. “Everything I write is on my own experiences and my emotions,” she said. “It’s about me or somebody else that has to do with me or my feelings on something.” After four years of dating, White wrote a song about her relationship with her now husband. Wanting him to propose, she called the song “Get On With The Show.” “Four years into our relationship
I was kind of sending him a message, so that’s what that song is about,” she said, laughing. “He proposed within a year.” White said she feels passionate about her city and wants people to appreciate it. She said the music scene in Toledo is its own community. “We’re all pretty tight and very supportive of each other,” she said. “Nights that I’m not playing I’ll go out and watch somebody else play.” White said that community comes with a lot of talent. “There’s a lot of really good musicians in Toledo and it is nice to be able to support each other and build up the music scene,” White said. “Toledo is oversaturated with the amount of talent. There are friends of mine in Toledo who could rival national musicians.” Michael S. Miller, the CD’s executive producer, said White’s song is a highlight of the disc. “She captures summers in our region like a painter or poet,” Miller said. “There is a line in her song about ‘Breathing in Lake Erie as it falls down from the sky’ that is beautiful and to me set a tone for the
KYLE WHITE spirit of the entire project.” White has a degree in psychology and has seriously considered combining it with her passion for music to help others through music therapy. “I actually have a couple of people who have worked with autistic kids and if the kids would get worked up
they would pop in my CD and it would calm them down,” she said. “Even if they are autistic and can’t communicate, they can respond to music.” White plans to continue playing music for years to come. “I know I’ll always play music,” she said. “I’ll always be a songwriter.” O

season heralds the start of summer, so it’s fitting that “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” is the opening track of “Red, White & You,” a CD of summer songs by local artists to

benefit the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio. “It’s fun. It’s a summer song,” said Mud Hens Communications Director Andi Roman. The 44-second track was recorded at Fifth Third Field during the seventh inning of the May 9 Toledo Mud Hens game. The idea came during a conversation with Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief Michael S. Miller, who had queried Roman about including the classic song on the CD. “Michael called to ask me if we had a version of it on tape from one of our games. Then I was like, ‘Well, it’d be fun to do a live rendition from fans.’ So we picked a game, promoted it and recorded it,” Roman said. “Basically it was a conversation that started with one idea and expanded to another.” Mud Hens emcee Anthony Bellino explained to the crowd of 5,500 what was happening and then fans took it away, with strategically placed microphones picking up their voices, Roman said. “It wasn’t anything really hightech,” Roman said. “We just took some of our mics out, put them where there were groups of people singing and caught their voices that way.” The Mud Hens and Toledo Walleye
regularly partner with the Red Cross to host blood drives, so the CD project was just one more way for the organization to help out a good cause, Roman said. “It’s a good charity and we knew the proceeds were going to benefit a local charity,” Roman said. “We were pleased to be asked. It was just fun. We were happy to do it.” O
The Sanderlings cover Beach Boys hit Recording The Beach Boys’ hit song “Help Me Rhonda” for the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio benefit CD “Red, White & You” was “pretty intense” for The Sanderlings, said bassist/singer Jonathan Rodebaugh. “It was more of a challenge. We wanted to see if we could do it,” he said. “We knew it would be tough because of the tight harmonies.” The Sanderlings typically consists of Rodebaugh, Jon Kynard on drums, Ben Masters on guitar and Josh Evans on guitar and vocals. Evans, however, is currently in Oregon so Scott Hunt is featured on the track instead. “We’re still keeping everything alive. Actually, what we’re trying to do now is break in the publishing end of things and try to get songs on TV shows,” Rodebaugh said. The group has been together since 2006 and released the album “Awesome Opossum” in October. “We’re just a quirky pop rock group that likes to have fun and we really enjoy the technical aspect of songwriting,” Rodebaugh said. The Sanderlings count The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Hollies and, of course, The Beach Boys as inspiration. Supporting the American Red Cross was also important to The Sanderlings. “It’s a good charity with all the disaster relief internationally and nationally with all the tornadoes and near misses locally,” Rodebaugh said. “It’s good to support a charity on the front lines.” O — Brigitta Burks

Clark covers The Boss for ‘Red, White & You’ By Jeff McGinnis

“Living around the Great Lakes is just a gift. We have such an amazing resource here,” said musician Kerry Patrick Clark, reflecting on summers gone by. “And then the other thing I think about summer, honestly, is I spent about half of my lifetime singing at Put-in-Bay in the summer. And it was a ball.” So when the opportunity arose for the prolific folk singer to contribute to a project that celebrated summer — as well as helped raise money for a great cause like the American Red Cross — it didn’t take much convincing for Clark to join the project. The only question left was what he would contribute. “[Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief Michael S. Miller] said, ‘Here, I’ll make it easy on you. Pick from two songs,’” Clark said. “I listened to them and I went, ‘I gotta do Bruce.’” “Bruce,” of course, being Springsteen. The Boss himself. Clark had chosen to cover Springsteen’s “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” off his “Magic” album — a seemingly odd choice for an artist whose work seems at a right angle to Bruce’s usual fare. “My approach was, you know, I’m a folk guy. People see me perform, 98 percent of the time, it’s with my six-string guitar. And so I tried to ap-
proach it less rock ’n’ roll and more folk. “So there’s a banjo on it, and a mandolin, and of course me and guitar. And there’s a few electric guitars in the background, just adding some guts to the chorus. “But it’s basically a stripped-down version of Bruce’s song.” Producing and mixing a new recording like his “Red, White & You” contribution can take upwards of 10-20 hours for Clark, he said. “The good news is, I have a studio in my basement. And so the process, to some, may look like a block of three or four hours, or 10 hours,” Clark said. “But to me, the process is, ‘Hey, I’ve got 10 minutes, I can work on that drum track for this tune.” But the hours of labor are worth it, he noted, to help such a great cause. “The only work I’ve done in the past would be giving blood,” Clark said with a laugh. “This is the reason I do it. I do it because Michael asked, and I have that much respect for him. I also have a respect for the Red Cross as an organization — not only for the blood drives,” he said. “The fact that they show up, the fact that if I need blood, it’s there — and the fact that, God forbid I’m in an accident, and rushed to the hospital — it’s like, ‘Thank you. Thank you so much for thinking about this.’ It’s just a really wonderful thing.” O

Toledo-area cover band Arctic Clam was born three years ago in a sushi bar to four friends who all had a passion for music. Now, the band has contributed a cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” for the “Red, White & You” Red Cross benefit CD. Nicole Khoury, lead singer for Arctic Clam and a Toledo-area criminal defense attorney, said she believes the song is perfect for a summer CD. “It’s a great summer song,” she said. “There’s something about ‘Don’t Stop Believin’.’ It’s like, ‘My God, here I am in a cover band, and I can have 20 people or 2,500 people sing the lyrics back to me.’ It’s just a quintessential summer song. You feel good hearing it.” Khoury, along with other band members Scott Hayes, Mick Mason and Steve Knurek, recorded their song at Firefly Studios in Toledo. “I was shocked at how quickly we recorded it,” she said. “We were there for a couple hours. I think the hardest to get down was the drums. Once we got the drums down, everything else found its place.” Khoury, founder of Project iAm, a local autism charity, said she believes in the power of local contributions. “I’m a firm believer that local people should support local people,” she said. “I think any time you can get people to do one thing and financially benefit others, it’s great.” Khoury said musicians in the Toledo area are a close-knit group. She said she especially loves playing with the other members of Arctic Clam. “It’s what makes me happiest, playing with those guys,” she said. “I can’t imagine playing with anyone else. We’re like a family. They’re all such wonderful musicians in their own right.” O

Old State Line adds own touch to ‘Summertime’ By Sarah Ottney

Lots of artists have covered “Summertime,” but possibly none quite like Old State Line. Using Doc Watson’s version as a model, the local group added a mandolin intro, used mandolin as the main rhythm instrument and ended the track with a “bluesy tag,” said drummer Larry Meyer. The group learned the song for “Red, White & You,” a CD of summer songs by local artists benefiting the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio. It took a little time to find the perfect song for the CD, Meyer said. “It wasn’t easy. We tried several things. We sat down and had a little listening party. We had lots of different suggestions and tried a few things, but they just didn’t gel,” Meyer said. “We were looking for a song that both fit the theme and also would make sense in our repertoire. If we were going to learn and hopefully perfect a song, rather than just learning it for the CD we wanted something that would fit in with our live set and that we could continue to play.” Once they decided on “Summertime,” the band listened to several different renditions before deciding how to make the song their own. “Anyone who is familiar with this song at all knows there are hundreds of versions,” Meyer said. “We listened to Janis Joplin, Ella Fitzgerald and others before stumbling across the Doc Watson version and that really influenced how we performed. It was catchy, classy and it was Americana or rootsmusic-based and as a result it seemed to fit with our general style of music.” Recording was a new experience

for Old State Line, as the group typically performs live, Meyer said. “That was just a wonderful experience,” Meyer said. “Kerry [Patrick Clark] welcomed us into the basement studio in his home and made us feel right at ease. It made it easy and fun. We have done some recording, but not a lot. We mostly do live so [recording] was still kind of a new and intimidating process for us and it was great to
be able to record with a pro like Kerry.” Meyer, an attorney, also worked with the CD’s executive producer, Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief Michael S. Miller, on song licensing. He did the same for Miller’s 2011 and 2012 “Holiday Wishes” CD projects benefiting Make-A-Wish Foundation, but this is the first time he’s participated as a musician. “I’ve been involved behind the scenes so I know Michael’s commit-
ment for the project and the quality of the finished project,” Meyer said. “The Red Cross is an easy thing to get behind and want to support. And of course I’d be lying if I didn’t recognize the publicity aspect for the band as well. So it was a classic win-win. “When you look at the other projects and you see the sheer number and quality of people who have agreed to donate their time as well, that set a

pretty high precedent,” Meyer said. “We were in good company.” Old State Line describes its sound as “acoustic Americana” and counts among its influences Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead and Old Crow Medicine Show, Meyer said. “You might say it’s too rock to be country and too country to be rock,” he said. The group formed around 2009. “It was a gradual thing that grew out of informal jam sessions in Old Orchard,” Meyer said. “One day we realized, ‘Hey, we’ve got a band here.’” Other members are Ramsey AbuAbsi, on vocals, guitar and mandolin; Cindy Lipman on vocals, fiddle and guitar; Rayna Zacharias on bass; and David Gstalder on vocals, guitar and banjo. The group has a standing gig at 10 a.m. the first Saturday of every month at the Glass City Cafe’s Bluegrass Breakfast. Meyer said Old State Line hasn’t played “Summertime” for many people yet — they didn’t want to spoil the impact when the CD is released — but they are excited to debut it live and to be part of the benefit CD. “We’re just happy to be a part of it and glad when we can do something like this and help out,” Meyer said. “It’s great.” O

Pop psychology asserts that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to make one a master. If this is true, Jeff Stewart certainly has obtained mastery status when it comes to his music. “I’ve been playing since I was 11,” Stewart said. Stewart is a longtime fixture on the Toledo music scene, playing in the past with The Flecks and The Starlings. He’s put out four CDs, two of them solo. While a member of The Flecks, a band once a favorite of Toledoarea college students, the Start High School graduate was known as “Jeffrey Sunshine.” When asked about his musical style, Stewart conceded that he doesn’t have one, but several. “It’s country western. I call it ‘rock ’n’ roll folk.’ It’s pop, it’s American influenced, it’s British influenced. It’s rock ’n’ roll,” he said. Stewart contributed “Little One” to the Red Cross benefit CD. “I think it’s about the possibility of finding love again after it was gone, and the idea of opening up your heart for the possibility that you can dive down into it again with someone you care about,” he said. “Chuck Mauk and Gregg Leonard produced [the track] with me and played on it also. They’re just as important in my world as I am,” he said. Currently, Stewart is putting

music,” he said. He also praised the organizations that the album benefits, the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio. “We’ve been seeing a lot of tragedies and a lot of natural disasters, especially in these last few years, and
God bless [the Red Cross] for coming in and wanting to help and getting these people on their feet,” Sayers said. He added of the other artists on the CD, “It’s great that there’s so many artists who were willing to put the time and effort into doing this for others.” O

Sayers, who has spent most of his adult life in Toledo. The tune details the sounds of a warm, romantic summer night like crickets, bull frogs, owls and the crackling of a bonfire. “I just put myself in a summer night and let it go,” Sayers said. Sayers, who played all the instruments on his track, said he’s been in several bands during the past decade, but has recently focused on his own acoustic career. “I’m probably one of the biggest Toledo-area artists that you’ve never heard of,” he said with a soft laugh. Sayers also works as a supervisor at an electric company.

A home for Maggie
Maggie is a 2 year old Shepherd and Chow mix. Maggie was abandoned in the parking lot of a bank. The Toledo Area Humane Society offered to take her in and help her find a new home. Maggie is a calm and quite girl. Her mild manner makes her a great housedog and she is content to spend most of her day napping on a cozy dog bed. Maggie is a little shy when she first meets new people and active children may frighten her. Maggie is happy being a little independence. She doesn’t require constant attention and won’t mind having to spend some time by herself when you’re away from the
home. Maggie usually ignores other dogs so she won’t object to a calmer canine friend. If you’re searching for an easy to maintain companion, Maggie might just be the perfect match for you. Maggie has been spayed, examined by a TAHS staff veterinarian, is current on her vaccinations, and is microchipped.
