ucas County Auditor and Toledo mayoral candidate Anita Lopez’s stance on foreign investment at the Marina District is misguided, misinformed and potentially damaging to a crucial part of Toledo’s future — global development. Following the NAACP candidates forum on Aug. 6, Lopez sent out a news release that touted, “Lopez proved she is the best candidate for Mayor of Toledo. Lopez offered a clear plan to create jobs by working with local businesses, not foreign corporations.” It also reads, “The Marina District was one of our key assets in the city of Toledo and it was practically given away with no plan, no benchmarks and no accountability. That is a pattern and practice that has happened at the city of Toledo for too long. I would have tried to identify investors with a solid plan before allowing foreign investors Thomas F. Pounds to come here. I would have given local businesses, first, an opportunity.” In addition to being outright false that there is no plan, benchmark or accountability for Mayor Mike Bell’s Marina District deal with Dashing Pacific, her comments could dramatically retard the relationships and partnerships Toledo is forming on a global stage. I spoke with Bell’s office this week and relay his response to Lopez’s comments: “Investors purchased the land at fair market value, which anyone with financing could have done for more than a dozen years. We included a clause in the contract that stipulates the city can buy the property back if there is no development after five years. The property is back on the tax rolls, contributing revenue to the community for schools, human services and other publicly funded needs. And, the terms of the sale were approved by city council. This project is not without measurement and it did not occur in a vacuum.” That clearly refutes Lopez’s misinformed statement, but there is more going on here. Principal “foreign” architects behind the Marina District deal have purchased other properties Downtown and have moved their families to live with us in what retired management consultant Jerry Jakes has long referred to as Lake Erie West. How must they feel when they observe unfriendly comments such as Lopez’s on the radio, television and in newspapers? How must the people overseas feel about us when, as they keep track of their investments, they hear such unkind and uninformed words? How much untold damage to the confidence, relationships and potential future business partnerships is being done by such baseless political grandstanding? And what is the impact on another group of “foreigners” who have a great investment in Toledo — the Italian company that owns our beloved Jeep? What must they think of such unfriendly rhetoric? It may not be outright racism toward our global partners, but is unquestionably xenophobia at its ugliest and most close-minded. Yes, the Marina District sale is open to debate and criticism, but on merit and facts, not a desire to cater to the basest and most reactionary elements of the electorate. O

A Toledo tradition since 2005 ToledoFreePress.com gram prepared the girls to run a 5K, but half of its time dedicated to discussing issues relevent to being a girl today. Topics range from diet and nutrition to gossip and bullying, but the one that connected with me is how the media can make you feel about your own body image. I would never have known how to begin this conversation with any of my daughters. Two years later, I remembered that conversation at Pacestter and picked up the phone. It was at this time I learned about the reach of the local GOTR and found that although it had only been in Northwest Ohio the past couple of years, they were doubling the number of schools each session and the number of participants from existing schools was growing exponentially. I also learned something that broke my heart: As of this past May, GOTR was not in any Toledo Public Schools (TPS). I shook my head that another amazing group was almost exclusive to affluent neighborhoods, when the inner city schools have at the very least an equal need and demand. GOTR organizers explained they were having some communication issues with TPS, but were wanting to expand everywhere that would have them. This was the moment I realized GOTR was what I was looking for, the reason why powerful women would display their naked faces to the world. I pitched my vision for This is Me, explained the motive behind it and asked GOTR if they would be a part of it. I promised everyone at our initial meeting that I would help knock loudly on TPS’ door until they answered, and would raise enough money to fund GOTR at one TPS school for a year. I am happy to announce that TPS answered a couple of weeks later and Girls on the Run will begin at Elmhurst Elementary School this year. We are currently photographing our This is Me participants. I asked one of the area’s best young artists, Lee Bates, to lend her incredible eye

n BAUMHOWER CONTINUED FROM 3 My thoughts on my girls dating are beyond primitive. But understanding and accepting my shortcomings gives me motivation to find the creativity to reach their beautiful little minds. Seeing Demi Lovato and other celebs tweet makeup-free “selfies,” those pictures people take of themselves, sparked a vision in my head. What if we filled a room with selfies of the most inspiring women in Northwest Ohio, all without makeup? I knew that would be a pretty powerful night and event, but I needed the right organization or charity to benefit from it. Two years ago, I was at Pacesetter Park when I witnessed a pack of familiar looking girls about the same age as my daughter Kacee. This group of smiling young women were running, looking focused, when I saw a friend and parent leading them along. I asked if it was cross country team and K.T. Newsom, a St. Joe’s Sylvania mom and avid runner proudly introduced me to Girls On The Run (GOTR). I admitted I had never heard of the organization, but I was intrigued by something else that was occurring. Along their route and attached to posts were sheets of paper. A girl would stop, grab the pen hanging by yarn and jot something down, then they would immediately begin jogging again. Newsom explained that each piece of paper had the name of one of the girls in their group. The runners who were training for a 5K race were asked to write down a compliment about each member of this girls-only club. At the end of the session, each girl was able to take a page full of compliments home after running and paying many of her own. I smirked at the pure beauty and simplicity of their task. Newsom then explained that Girls on the Run was an organization designed for girls in the third, fourth and fifth grades. The 10-week pro-

RELIEF. Ask your doctor about Synvisc-One, the #1 prescribed viscosupplement in the U.S.1

The only viscosupplement providing up to 6 months of osteoarthritis knee pain relief with just one injection.*

Indication Synvisc-One® (hylan G-F 20) is indicated for the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative non-pharmacologic therapy and simple analgesics, e.g., acetaminophen.

Important Safety Information for Synvisc-One Before trying Synvisc-One, tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, tongue or throat, respiratory difficulty, rash, itching or hives to SYNVISC or any hyaluronan-based products. Should not be used in patients with an infected knee joint, skin disease or infection around the area where the injection will be given, or circulatory problems in the legs. Synvisc-One is only for injection into the knee, performed by a doctor or other qualified health care professional. Synvisc-One has not been tested to show pain relief in joints other than the knee. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to products from birds — such as feathers, eggs or poultry — or if your leg is swollen or infected. Synvisc-One has not been tested in children (≤21 years old), pregnant women or women who are nursing. You should tell your doctor if you think you are pregnant or if you are nursing a child. Patient Information Be sure to read the following important information carefully. This information does not take the place of your doctor’s advice. If you do not understand this information or want to know more, ask your doctor. Glossary of Terms Hyaluronan (pronounced hy-al-u-ROE-nan): is a natural substance that is present in very high amounts in joints. It acts like a lubricant and a shock absorber in the joint and is needed for the joint to work properly. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: also known as “NSAIDs”; medication used to treat pain or swelling. There are many examples of NSAIDs, including (but not limited to) aspirin and ibuprofen. Some of these are over-the-counter drugs, and some can be obtained only by prescription. Osteoarthritis (pronounced OS-te-o-arth-RI-tis): (OA) is a type of arthritis that involves the wearing down of cartilage (the protective covering on the ends of your bones) and loss of cushioning fluid in the joint. What is the Synvisc-One® product? Synvisc-One is a gel-like mixture that comes in a syringe containing 6 mL (1½ teaspoon) and is injected into your knee. It is made up of hylan A fluid, hylan B gel, and salt water. Hylan A and hylan B are made from a substance called hyaluronan (pronounced hy-al-u-ROE-nan), also known as sodium hyaluronate that comes from chicken combs. Hyaluronan is a natural substance found in the body and is present in very high amounts in joints. The body’s own hyaluronan acts like a lubricant and a shock absorber in the joint and is needed for the joint to work properly. How is the Synvisc-One® product used? (Indications) The FDA-approved indication for Synvisc-One is: Synvisc-One is indicated for the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative nonpharmacologic therapy and simple analgesics, e.g., acetaminophen. How is the Synvisc-One® product given? Your doctor will inject Synvisc-One into your knee. Are there any reasons why I should not receive a Synvisc-One® injection? (Contraindications) Your doctor will determine if there is any reason why you are not an appropriate candidate for Synvisc-One. You should be aware that Synvisc-One: • Should not be used in patients who have had any prior allergic reactions to Synvisc, Synvisc-One or any hyaluronan-based products. Signs of an allergic reaction may include swelling of your face, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing; shortness of breath; wheezing; chest pain; a tightness in your throat; sleepiness; rash; itching; hives; flushing; and/or fever. • Should not be used in patients with a knee joint infection, skin disease or infection around the area where the injection will be given, or circulatory problems in the legs. What should my doctor warn me about? The following are important treatment considerations for you to discuss with your doctor and understand in order to help avoid unsatisfactory results and complications: • Synvisc-One is only for injection into the knee, performed by a doctor or other qualified health care professional. Synvisc-One has not been tested to show pain relief in joints other than the knee. • Synvisc-One has not been tested to show better pain relief when combined with other injected medicines. • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to products from birds such as feathers, eggs, and poultry. • Tell your doctor if you have significant swelling or blood clots in the leg. • Synvisc-One has not been tested in pregnant women, or women who are nursing. You should tell your doctor if you think you are pregnant, or if you are nursing a child. • Synvisc-One has not been tested in children (≤21 years of age). What are the risks of getting a Synvisc-One® injection? The side effects (also called reactions) sometimes seen after any injection into the knee, including Synvisc-One, include: pain, swelling, heat, redness, and/or fluid buildup around the knee. These reactions are generally mild and do not last long. Reactions are generally treated by resting and applying ice to the injected knee. Sometimes it is necessary to give pain relievers by mouth such as acetaminophen or NSAIDs, or to give injections of steroids, or to remove fluid from the knee joint. Patients rarely undergo arthroscopy (a surgical inspection of the knee joint) or other medical procedures related to these reactions. Other side effects seen with Synvisc or Synvisc-One are: rashes, hives, itching, muscle pain/cramps, flushing and/or swelling of your face, fast heartbeat, nausea (or feeling sick to your stomach), dizziness, fever, chills, headache, difficulty breathing, swelling in your arms and/or legs, prickly feeling of your skin, and in rare cases a low number of platelets in the blood (platelets are a type of blood cell that are needed to help your blood clot when you are cut or injured). Rare cases of knee joint infection have been reported. If any of the above side effects or symptoms appear after you are given Synvisc-One, or if you have any other problems, you should call your doctor.

What are the benefits of getting a Synvisc-One® injection? As shown in a medical study of 253 patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, where approximately half received either a single injection of Synvisc-One or an injection of the same volume of salt water (a “Saline Control” injection), the major benefits of SynviscOne are pain relief and improvement in other symptoms related to OA of the knee. What do I need to do after I get a Synvisc-One® injection? It is recommended you avoid strenuous activities (for example, high-impact sports such as tennis or jogging) or prolonged weight-bearing activities for approximately 48 hours following the injection. You should consult your doctor regarding the appropriate time to resume such activities. What other treatments are available for OA? If you have OA, there are other things you can do besides getting Synvisc-One. These include: Non-drug treatments • Avoiding activities that cause knee pain • Exercise or physical therapy • Weight loss • Removal of excess fluid from your knee Drug therapy • Pain relievers such as acetaminophen and narcotics • Drugs that reduce inflammation (signs of inflammation are swelling, pain or redness), such as aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, for example ibuprofen and naproxen) • Steroids that are injected directly into your knee When should I call my doctor? (Troubleshooting) If any of the side effects or symptoms described above appear after you are given Synvisc-One, or if you have any other problems, you should call your doctor. What did the clinical studies show? A study was conducted in 6 countries outside the United States with 21 physicians. The patients in the study had mild to moderate knee OA, moderate to severe pain, and did not have sufficient relief of their pain and symptoms with medications taken by mouth. A total of 253 patients in the study were assigned by chance to receive either a single injection of Synvisc-One (n=123 patients), or an injection of the same volume of salt water (a “Saline Control” injection) (n=130 patients). Neither the patients nor the doctors evaluating them knew which treatment they received. Any fluid that was present in the patient’s knee was removed before the injection. The patients were seen by their doctor at standard times over 6 months. Information was collected about how much pain they were experiencing doing various types of activities, how much they were limited in their daily activities by their OA, and on their overall condition. Their doctor also provided an overall rating of their OA. The main measure of the study was how much pain the subjects had doing five common types of activities over the 6 months duration of the study. Daily activity limitations and overall evaluations were also compared between the group of patients receiving Synvisc-One injection and the group receiving salt water injection. The study showed that patients receiving Synvisc-One had significantly less pain over 6 months, and felt significantly better than the patients who received the salt water injections. The difference in pain score reduction from baseline to 6 months between the Synvisc-One and salt water control injection was 0.15 out of a 5 point scale for the measurement of OA pain in the knee. What adverse events were observed in the clinical study? The following are the most common adverse events that occurred during the clinical trial of Synvisc-One: • Pain in the knee or at the injection site • Stiffness, swelling or warmth in or around the knee • Changes in the way that you walk (e.g., limping) Severe adverse events were not observed in the Synvisc-One trial. Joint infections did not occur in the injected knee in the Synvisc-One clinical trial. The most commonly occurring adverse events outside of the injected knee were headache, back pain, sore throat and the flu. One patient had a single episode of feeling faint. LUCAS COUNTY

By Evan Brune

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer ebrune@toledofreepress.com

When the village of Maumee was incorporated in 1838, Martin Van Buren was U.S. president, the state of Michigan was just 1 year old and the coronation of Queen Victoria ushered in the Victorian Age in England. Maumee is set to celebrate its 175th anniversary with a weeklong celebration starting Aug. 11. The celebration includes an ice cream social, a free movie day at the Maumee Indoor Theatre and a guided tour of the Fallen Timbers Battlefield. “The official date of incorporation was back in March,” said John Jezak, Maumee city administrator. “In looking at previous years, they always celebrated in May. We’re doing it in August, and the reason we chose that week was because it ties in with our summer fair.” Julie Rubini, a Maumee City Council representative and committee member, said the availability of Maumee families was also taken

into consideration when the planning committee scheduled the anniversary celebration. “It’s a time where families are taking vacations, so this way, they can take their vacation and spend some time at the celebration.” Jezak said the weather was also a factor in choosing a date for the anniversary celebration. “Previous events were marred with rain. We’re hoping for good weather,” he said. The celebrations kick off on Aug. 11 with a tour of the Wolcott House, an old-fashioned baseball game and an ice cream social. “The commemorative week will offer a lot to people who want to share in our love of the city,” Jezak said. “There’s going to be a number of free events. We want to try to get everybody involved.” On Aug. 15, a film detailing the history of Maumee will be shown at the Maumee Indoor Theater from 6-9 p.m. The premiere will feature food from local businesses and a cash bar. n MAUMEE CONTINUES ON 13

Supplies are limited, so act now, as they say.” DVDs of the film will also be available for $10. Jezak said the city administrator’s office worked with the planning committee to develop the celebration. “It’s been a very open-ended process,”

he said. “We’ve tried to come up with the best ideas that people would enjoy.” The final day of the anniversary celebration consists of a tour of Maumee High School, as well as a food program titled “Taste of Maumee.” The Uptown Summer Fair is on Aug. 17 and features a street fair as well as live bands and food tasting. “[The fair is] an event that’s been going on for about 30 years now,” Jezak said. “There’s games, vendors, food. It’s free admission and open to

all. All sorts of people come to town, and we enjoy that.” To fund the celebration, the city sold commemorative banners. Companies could purchase banners on city light poles for $250. Others costing $150 were hung around the city. Maumee sold 70 banners. “As we speak, our last batch is being produced,” Jezak said. “We will have all the banners up by the time the anniversary rolls around and those will stay up through Dec. 1.”

Jezak said Maumee has experienced a revival due to its location. “Transportation has always played a big role in Maumee’s development,” he said. “Today, we’re benefiting from our position at the crossroads of the turnpike and I-475, and we’re close to the city of Toledo, so all these things have come together to benefit the city of Maumee.” Jezak said he hopes Maumee will continue to thrive. “Maumee stands a good chance H E A R T A N D VA S C U L A R S E R V I C E S

FLOOR PLANS FOR PAUL MITCHELL THE SCHOOL, OPENING IN SYLVANIA.

Paul Mitchell cosmetology school to open in Sylvania By Brigitta Burks

Toledo Free Press News Editor bburks@toledofreepress.com

Paul Mitchell the School Toledo is set to open and start its first wave of cosmetology classes Sept. 3. “Our program is absolutely an advanced academy so not only are [the students] going to be technically prepared for the industry, but also professionally and personally [prepared],” said Ashlee Harris, the admissions leader. The new school will be located at 5549 Monroe St., Sylvania, and offers instruction on hair, skin and nail care, but focuses mainly on hair. The school is Paul Mitchell’s fourth in Ohio. “The cool thing about Paul Mitchell is we’re a one-sizefits-all company,” Harris added. “You see every walk of life.” According to Harris, the 1,500-hour program typically takes a little less than a year to complete. She said the ideal candidate is someone “who is wanting to make a change in the industry and wanting to be the best.” The Paul Mitchell company decided to open a Toledo school after studying the region. “It’s a growing city and we are able to really pull from not only surrounding areas in Toledo, but also Michigan and Indiana,” Harris said, adding that Paul Mitchell products are popular in the area. The company also plans to become involved in the community as it has near its other school locations.

Brittany Darling is a Toledo-area native who attended Paul Mitchell the School Cincinnati. She would have attended a Toledo-based Paul Mitchell school if there had been one a year ago. “I loved it. It was the best experience I could have asked for,” Darling said of the program. The recent graduate is moving back to Toledo to work at the new school’s front desk, but hopes to become an instructor. Darling said she appreciated the technical skills the school taught her. “To have Paul Mitchell behind your background, behind your name is the best thing,” she said. About six weeks after the start of classes, the school’s salon, where students practice their craft on customers under supervision, is expected to open, Harris said. Harris said she expects additional employment opportunities at the school, but is presently unsure of the number of positions that will need to be filled. There are many job opportunities for cosmetology students after graduation, Harris said. “Our industry has yet to see repercussions (from the recession). We haven’t really skipped a beat. There’s always jobs,” she said. To learn more about future employment opportunities or apply for school, contact Harris at (419) 885-5191 or ashlee@toledo.paulmitchell.edu. It is almost always a good idea to save as much as possible in a retirement account like a 401(k). Countless studies have shown that saving early and saving more can have a dramatic long-term impact on building a big retirement nest egg. Yet, one of the times a family needs to consider how to redirect their savings is when they have high-interest debt. If you don’t pay off your credit card every month, rates can run anywhere from 15 to 25 percent a year. For investors who are saving in a 401(k) and who have high-interest debt, consider backing down contributions to what the company matches and take 100 percent of the extra savings and put it toward paying off your debt. It will take some discipline, but trust us — being debt free is a key to long-term financial success.

No company match

After the financial crash of 2008, several companies looked for ways to cut costs. One way some companies accomplished this goal was to eliminate the company match they make into employee retirement accounts. From what we have seen, this trend has started to change and a lot of companies that stopped company matches have started back up. Yet, for employees who still don’t get a company match, try investing half of the savings in the company

plan and half of the money in other accounts like Roth IRAs and individual accounts. This advice doesn’t take into consideration each person’s individual tax rate, but it is a good way to diversify the taxation of accounts and gives an investor more buckets of money to draw from in the future.

CLAIR BAKER

Explore choices

Beyond the company match, investors looking for more choices should consider spreading out the investment savings between annuities, cash value life insurance, Roth IRAs or individual accounts to get more customized options.

Tax-deferred accounts

It would be surprising if we told an investor to stop saving money for the future. Yet, remember to not put all of your eggs in one basket. A family that puts 100 percent of its money into tax-deferred retirement accounts, like a 401(k), may end up having limited access to money and/or face future tax burdens. Strict rules apply to how and when a person can take money out of a retirement account, otherwise huge tax penalties can apply for those who withdraw funds early. Remember to diversify savings into taxable, tax-deferred and tax-free accounts for more flexibility in the future. Johnson releases book on improving Toledo’s future

By Brigitta Burks

Toledo Free Press News Editor bburks@toledofreepress.com

Former president of the University of Toledo and Toledo Free Press columnist Dan Johnson recently released “Toledo Vision,” an collection of his Toledo Free Press about improving the Glass City’s future. “Pe op l e coming in from other places see so many assets that you don’t find JOHNSON in a lot of other cities: the museum, the zoo, the Metroparks, the university, the health care system we have in place. It just seems to me that we are poised for real growth and development,” said Johnson, who was UT’s president from 2001-06.

“I just happen to think that Toledo has so much going for it and so much potential,” he said. Johnson was born in Springfield, Ohio, and came to Toledo about 13 years ago. As president of UT, he led the merging of the school with the Medical University of Ohio. Johnson, a social demographer, also served as chief operating official and provost of Zayed University, based in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and as UT’s global initiatives director. Mayor Mike Bell, who wrote the foreward for “Toledo Vision,” said, “Dr. Johnson has spent time in Toledo and throughout the world, so that he would choose our city as the focus of his book is an honor. The conversation it sparks is important because it will promote Toledo in both the national and global markets. I appreciate that someone of his caliber is working diligently to change the face of Toledo in the future.” Johnson released “Talking Points for

Toledo: Strategies for Developing Our City and Region,” another collection of his Toledo Free Press columns in 2009. The new 173-page book is divided into several sections, including ones on defining the city’s future and image, economic development, education, regionalism and globalization. One essay “Imagine Toledo in 2020,” written in 2008, details an ideal version of the city’s future.

When asked if Toledo is on that track, Johnson said, “I think you can find examples of progress. I don’t think we’re moving as far and as fast as we could. I think there’s been great progress in developing our international visibility [and] understanding the importance of globalization.” Johnson concludes his book by stressing the importance of collaborative leadership, in which different leaders of

various sectors and organizations work together to improve the community. “Toledo, as almost everyone knows, has so many strengths and so many assets yet we haven’t developed as a city and as a region as fast and as well as we would like. I believe that leadership is a key factor,” he said. Those interested in obtaining a copy of “Toledo Vision” can email tpounds@toledofreepress.com. O

SOS is a nonprofit, tax deductible organization with 501(c)(3) status. SOS pays students up to $8 an hour to tutor other students in public schools. Cauffiel said the organization has spent $2 million on tutoring students since its inception with matching funds from participating school districts. The tutoring usually takes place before or after school in the library or cafeteria and focuses mainly on reading and math. A teacher monitors the program, conducts continuous measurement on the progress of each student and submits a final report at the end of the school year, Cauffiel said. Since Cauffiel received the prestigious Jefferson Award for the SOS program in February, he said many more schools have requested funding for the program.

Johnson and Cauffiel know one another through their businesses. “We are helping children who are falling through the cracks by giving them the one-on-one attention they need with a proven highly effective and efficient program, providing clothing for needy in developing countries and creating the commercial value of making a sound barrier for cars and trucks using recycled material,” Johnson said. The partnership came about after Cauffiel spoke with Rodriguez, who was doing some construction work on one of the buildings, about the SOS program. Rodriguez expressed his interest in getting involved and the rest is history. “I owe everything to [Cauffiel],”

Rodriguez said. “We’re just getting started with the program that is changing the lives of kids.” Rodriguez said the group is looking for sites to place the boxes and is talking to the school districts participating in the program about placing boxes at their schools. Anyone interested in having a box located on their property can contact Rodriguez at tomrod@usa.com or go to www. pfkllc.info for more information. Rodriguez said his son and daughter are working with him on the new venture, so Cauffiel is helping to fund the family business. He has lived and worked in the Toledo community for 25 years. While working at other radio stations, Jeff Lamb sometimes had 350 songs to choose from, with limited classic rock hits. Now, with his own station, he plays from a list of 1,300 songs. “It’s growing every day,” Lamb said. With “Classic Hits Toledo,” the radio station broadcast from his Toledo home, he promises to play the best of “everything.” In a matter of 10 minutes, he played “Brass in Pocket” by The Pretenders “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim” by Jim Croce and “The Waiting” by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. “It’s something for everybody,” Lamb said. The radio station, a worldwide enterprise with Toledo pride, is aired online at classichitstoledo.com. Lamb said he embraces new technology with no hesitation. “Classic Hits Toledo” is available as a free app for iPhones and Androids. “If you wanted to start a radio station in the old days, you had to get

an FCC license, you had buy a transmitter, you had to buy a tower; not anybody could do it,” Lamb said. Lamb hosts a morning show every weekday from 6-10 a.m. On it, he does skits and talks about water cooler news stories. He sometimes has a visit from “the guy upstairs” for weather reports. On Saturday nights, “Classic Hits Toledo” serves as an outlet for local bands. During “Man Cave,” he opens his home to a new band for live airing 9 p.m. to midnight each Saturday. In the past, he’s broadcast shows with locals Frijid Pink, The Kripke Brothers and Chris Shutters. Lamb has a long history working in radio. He was motivated to start his own station because of the current state he believes the industry is in. “I grew up when radio was competitive [and] innovative. You competed against the guy across the street,” Lamb said. “Well now, with the new corporate radio, the guy across the street’s across the hall. Now you have to promote him. You sure can’t say anything bad about him. Everything is so tied

together; it’s totally different from the way radio should be. Where’s the fun?” Lamb’s “Man Cave” originates from his days with 104.7 WIOT. It aired for two years. In April, after leaving WIOT, Lamb began working to get “Classic Hits Toledo” on the air. In July, it started broadcasting 24 hours. “As someone working in radio, I get to do radio the way I was taught to do radio and the way I think radio should be done,” Lamb said. Despite the workload, Lamb said he is having the most fun he’s ever had. “I’m started to realize why radio stations have more than one employee,” Lamb said. “I’m the sales team, I’m the program director, I’m the disc jockey, I’m project director, I’m the engineer, I’m doing all the wiring; it’s just crazy. But it’s up and it’s running and it sounds really, really good.” Lamb said he has had DJs wanting to work for him. He said it is something that will happen in the future. On Aug. 16, Lamb will travel to Flint, Mich., for the Back to the Bricks classic cars show, where he will broadcast his program. O

’ll admit, I tuned in to the Pro Football Hall of Fame game last weekend. It’s been so long since we’ve seen organized football, I just wanted to see if they still remembered how to play it. Sure enough, there were the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dol-

phins, playing football. In pads and everything! And Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth were there, and they were talking about football! Granted, by the time I got to the game in the second quarter, the third stringers were already in, and Al and Cris were spending more

time talking to folks who had recently been enshrined in the Hall rather than talking about the game proper. But it was there! Football! That got me thinking about how the NFL is close to coming back, but that means college ball is coming too! And

high school! As I watched the game, I did what anyone under the age of 35 does now when they Matt CULBREATH watch sports: They open Twitter on their phone to riff on the game along with everyone else. Not a lot of people were talking about the game proper, but one point kept coming up: the Dolphins’ new jerseys. See, Miami finally brought its look into the 21st century by retiring the old logo. No more helmet-wearing dolphin — they stylized the marine mammal and saturated the colors. The Internet, as it is prone to do, immediately took to criticizing the look. They called those uniforms everything from a Carolina rip-off to CFL jerseys. I know that sports nowadays has been compared to “rooting for laundry,” but now we’re discussing that laundry to a point of ridiculousness. As more and more people become enamored with the art of design, more and more people become critical of that design. When the New Orleans Hornets announced that they were resurrecting the Pelicans name from an old baseball franchise, people tore up the name without even thinking about its history in the organization. By the time the logo, colors and uniforms were introduced, it was already too late: The team was a lost cause. When the Dallas Stars introduced a new look, everything from the shade of green to the shape of the star was put under the microscope. I’m also guilty of it; I’m still not that fond of the Walleye name and logo. It’s grown on me, though, particularly after they introduced that third jersey with the real fish logo. But I thought the Bullfrogs imaging for the never-seen arena football team looked so much better. One lone Twitter user (who said it, I can’t remember) put it all in perspective for me, though, with one comment. If a new baseball team were announced today, and given the name the Red Socks, the world would lose its mind. Even worse if they were intentionally going to misspell it, going with Surge-level extremes by spelling it “Red Sox.” Sports fans would be apoplectic! What, did we return to the XFL suddenly? Truth is that these names, colors and designs only need the approval of the region they represent. It’s their laundry, let them design it. M

Mixed martial arts coach hosts radio show By Casey Harper

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer charper@toledofreepress.com

Greg DeLong has been a Marine Corps officer, sold pharmaceuticals,

coached mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters and hosted a radio show. He has experience in learning new trades but has finally settled into the field he loves, mixed martial arts. DeLong hosts an online radio

show called “Inside The Cage” devoted to all things MMA. “I try to keep them up-to-date on news that’s going on, and try to give my opinion on what’s going on,” he said. “I give an honest, level-headed approach

and from the view of someone around MMA all day, every day.” MMA combines different fighting styles, like boxing, wrestling and judo. The sport pits fighters against each other for cash prizes. “The biggest thing is the work ethic and mental toughness,” DeLong said. “Just like any other sport, not always does the most talented person rise to the top. You have to really have a belief in yourself and basically a laser focus and be really driven to fight through all the obstacles.” Delong lives in Los Angeles. but has held on to his Toledo roots. He said he loves going to Tony Packo’s and Mud Hens games. He graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School and attended The Ohio State University. His sister went to Bowling Green State University and his dad retired from General Motors Co. in Toledo. DeLong wrestled at OSU for seven years as part of a seven-year program. Training with Ultimate Fighting Champion fighters for the first time sparked a love that would change his life. “That really got my feet wet,” he said. Before long, he was coaching fighters and helped put on a local amateur fighters promotion fight. “The experience was awesome because I was able to see firsthand what it’s like on the inside of the promotion,” he said. “That was a very eye-opening experience and I can at least look at things from the inside and how difficult it is to actually put on an event. It was fun to be around the fighters and to be on the inside on fight night.” DeLong began talking with a station manager in Reno, Nev., about hosting a talk radio show about MMA. He began the show in 2008 and it grew

DeLONG in popularity. He has since moved to LA and does the show online at insidethecageradio.com. He also works at Redgear Sports selling MMA equipment meaning he gets to connect with people daily about what he loves. DeLong tried to make an official MMA debut of his own, but hit a roadblock in Nevada. “I was scheduled to fight in a King of the Cage event in Reno and the state of Nevada refused to sanction me,” he said. “The athletic commission wouldn’t license a 43-year-old who was making his pro debut.” DeLong enjoys having access to the biggest names in MMA. “It’s similar to NASCAR in that the fans and the fighters connect very well,” he said. “The fighters are very accessible.” He sees himself staying involved with MMA for years to come. “I just want to stay involved in the mixed martial arts world and I want to be a part of it and I want to grow with it.” O
