t the Sept. 13 This Is Me event, the three women in The Rivets sang the latest Katy Perry song with gritty conviction: “I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire/’Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar/“Louder, louder than a lion/‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar.” At an event supporting female empowerment, the song set a perfect mood. The inaugural This Is Me, which benefited Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Northwest Ohio, was a rousing success, raising $6,000 according to organizer Jeremy Baumhower. The event featured large portraits of local women without makeup — Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates, Toledo City Councilwoman Lindsay Webb, WTOL-11 news anchor Chrys Peterson, 101.5 The River morning Thomas F. Pounds radio host Mary Beth Zolik, Project iAm founder Nicole Khoury, The Josh Project founder Wanda Butts, Hannah’s Socks founder Hannah Turner, two-time cancer survivor and Susan G. Komen for the Cure honoree Kelli Andres and Toledo Police Sgt. Anita Madison of the Toledo Community Initiative to Reduce Violence. GOTR is a 10-week program that combines running with an interactive curriculum to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in preteen girls. Topics discussed include bullying, peer pressure and healthy body image with a focus on positive physical, emotional, mental and social development. The organization has chapters in more than 200 cities in the United States and Canada. Northwest Ohio’s chapter started in 2012 and hosted 13 teams of third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at 11 sites during its spring season. More local sites will be added this fall. The packed event filled The Blarney Event Center with music, chatter and the clear sound of raw female pride. Toledo Free Press sponsored This Is Me and another big event that night; my group left the GOTR event and drove to Fallen Timbers, where one of the women featured at This Is Me, Khoury, organized a Project iAm concert by George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. Thousands of people watched one of the masters own the stage, waving arms, shaking bottoms and smiling ear to ear. Project iAm, a charity that provides scholarships to children with autism, is driven by Khoury’s vision and energy. Her efforts, along with those of GOTR and This Is Me, provided a very lucky Friday the 13th with a roar of empowerment that will echo through the lives of many for a long time to come. O Thomas F. Screw that. Turn these two mothers loose. Politics is about scheming, shuffling money, shifting blame and kicking ass when someone is stupid enough to expose their flanks. Gentlemanly pinkie-promise tea parties might be how the Harvard Rowing Club gets things done, but this is Toledo — home to Bob “Bulldog” McCloskey, Opal “The Prophetess” Covey and Carty “Marine Denyin’, Dog-In-Car-Lockin’, Coffee-Cup-Tossin’, F-Bomb-Droppin’” Finkbeiner. Not only should these men not have signed the ethics pledge, they should have seriously considered bitch-slapping anybody who waved such a pledge in their faces. “Excuse, me, Sir, I’d like to know why you haven’t signed this pledge —” “THWACK!” Now we get a campaign directed by Steven Spielberg instead of a campaign directed by Martin Scorsese. Toledo should take its cue from the world stage. Russia’s Vladimir “The Assassin” Putin has taken charge of the Syria crisis and made Barack “The Waffler” Obama look weak and ineffectual. Who is better suited to lead Toledo into development battles with Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and the rest of the region — a simpering, crotchless panty-wearing, One Direction fan willing to sign away his right to win by any means necessary or a walkin’ tall, Machiavelli-reading, Samuel L. Jackson-quoting baller who knows you don’t make a motherf----g omelet with breaking a few motherf-----g eggs? This could still be salvaged. Instead of a debate, let’s stage a cage match in which the two candidates choose their potential chief of staff as Heath Ledger’s Joker did — let’s see Bell and Collins snap a pool cue in half, hand a piece to their top two candidates, and remind them there is only one job opening. If they adhere to this pledge, we’ll have to watch Bell and Collins curtsy and waltz for an hour as they sing a Katy Perry song about fairness and diction, instead of seeing them unleash Hell on each other like Dr. Dre vs. Luke Campbell. It is no secret that Bell and Collins dislike each other. Why should they be forced to fake smile and act out two months of bull---t? What insight is that going to offer? Aren’t you tired of the masks and pretending and phony politicking? Aren’t you tired of the hypocrisy, closed-door deals and people who would rather drown you in paperwork than face you like men? Bell and Collins should have the freedom and resources to be who they are without worrying about distressing the egghead community’s collective pyloric valve. The Cambridge way ain’t our way. Let’s look to another C-town, Chicago, to set the tone. Set down the quill and pick up a baseball bat. Put away the driving mittens and let’s lace up the spiked gloves. Take that ethics pledge and stuff it in your ivory tower basement. Let Bell and Collins stay free to fight it out in the interest of standing tough for Toledo. O Michael S. Twenty local restaurants have enlisted in a one-day campaign to help fight hunger. Food Fight 419 is a fundraiser organized by local nonprofit Food for Thought in recognition of National Hunger Awareness Month. Participating restaurants will donate 5 percent of their one-day sales to Food For Thought. The all-day event will take place Sept. 24. Participating restaurants are Balance Pan-Asian Grille (Sylvania and Maumee), Black Kite Coffee, Burger Bar 419, Caper’s, Deet’s BBQ, El Tipico, Epic Buffet, Final Cut Steak & Seafood, JB’s Sarnie Shoppe, Mancy’s Italian, Mancy’s Steaks, Ottawa Tavern, Plate 21, Registry Bistro, Scene, Take 2 Grill, The Blarney Irish Pub and Vito’s Pizza (East Toledo and Oregon). Sam Melden, Food for Thought’s chief thought officer, said he got the idea from a similar fundraiser organized by the Columbus-based Central Ohio Restaurant Association to benefit the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. “I saw they did this event in Columbus and said, ‘What if we did our own, but linked it up with National Hunger Awareness Month?’” Melden said. “I want to give a lot of credit to the local restaurant community. We have a strong community who wants to be engaged in Food for Thought and wants to be engaged in fighting hunger in our area.” Melden said he is always trying to come up with new and creative ways to fundraise. In May, Food for Thought hosted Jam City, which challenged local restaurants to create a dish inspired by the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the organization gives away in sack lunches each Saturday morning in Downtown Toledo. “This event will kind of be the opposite of Jam City,” Melden said. “For Jam City, we had all the restaurants come to us and they had to do something different and unique. We charged admission and it was like a big party. Now we’re sending our supporters back out to the restaurants. We’re telling our restaurants not to do anything different and I think that’s great.” Food For Thought, which

formed in 2007, strives to build relationships in addition to providing food, Melden said. “With Food For Thought, it’s more about eye contact than it is about full stomachs; it’s more about handshakes than it is about handouts,” Melden told Toledo Free Press earlier this year. “Food is a vehicle to making simple, dignified relationships with people.” The money raised by Food Fight 419 will go toward the operation of Food for Thought’s mobile pantry program, including food budget, gas and vehicle maintenance, Melden said. The organization recently acquired a second truck and trailer and expanded its outreach to 19 food pantries, 18 being mobile and one located at New Harvest Christian Church in Oregon. “Just because something is going well doesn’t mean the problem is going away,” Melden said. “That’s what happens sometimes with Food for Thought and other organizations. People see success and walk away because they think that means it’s self-sustaining and they don’t need my contribution, but that’s not the case at all. We need community support more than ever.”

Whittington, who married a Toledo native and died in Toledo, was serving in Grimesnil, France, on July 29, 1944, when his platoon came under enemy attack. According to his Medal of Honor citation, Whittington assumed command when his platoon leader and platoon sergeant went missing in action. He reorganized the defense and, while under fire, crawled between gun positions to check the actions of his men. As a line of German tanks attempted to penetrate a roadblock, “Sgt. Whittington, completely disregarding intense enemy action, mounted a tank and by shouting through the turret, directed it into position to fire pointblank at the leading Mark V German tank. The destruction of this vehicle blocked all movement of the remaining enemy column consisting of more than 100

Race for Cure celebrates 20th year with two events By Jay Hathaway

Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio is once again ready to kick off its Race for the Cure festivities and to honor two local women who have exemplified courage while facing cancer. This year’s “In Celebration of ” honoree is Kelli Andres, a Sylvania mother who has conquered cancer not once, but twice. Alongside Andres is ANDRES the “In Memory of ” honoree, Denise Soto, who owned Soto Loft and Signature Spa in Perrysburg and lost her battle with breast cancer in 2011. Andres, who has taken part in the race for the past three years, will be honored at the race and at events like survivor breakfasts. She has also spoken on behalf of Komen for radio and television appearances. “It’s a huge honor,” Andres said. “The Susan G. Komen foundation is such a

leading force in breast cancer awareness and research, and servicing women in Northwest Ohio. Just being associated with them in that capacity is humbling. It’s so humbling, because every woman has their battles and all those [survivors] are so deserving as well.” Andres is a fantastic representation of what the foundation stands for, said Stephanie Pilgrim, marketing and communications manager at Komen Northwest Ohio. “She has overcome adversity, and has come out on the other side of things. Since she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer, she has made it her mission to fundraise. She’s always put other people ahead of herself, and that’s something that we really admire, and that’s why we chose her,” Pilgrim said. When Andres was 12 years old, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in her knee. “I had a doctor tell me, ‘The only way for you to survive is if we take your leg,’” Andres said. After having her left leg amputated, Andres went through 15 months of chemotherapy. She said at that time, 1977, the survival rate for her type of cancer was about 50 percent. “I was a preteen and went through junior high going to che-

motherapy, but I did well, did my checkups and never had a recurrence,” Andres said. She later attended the University of Toledo and began a career in marketing. After marrying her husband, Van, and having two sons, she decided to become a stayat-home mom. Then, in 2010, Andres was diagnosed with stage-3 breast cancer, which required a mastectomy and more sessions of chemotherapy. “It was a long year,” Andres said. “We took that time to teach our boys about the ‘silver lining.’ We had friends that were bringing us meals, and friends that sent their teenage boys over to mow our lawn during the summer. You just see this shining light that tells you that there are people all around you that do great things.” Andres again overcame her cancer, and once she was feeling better, she began to get involved with fundraising efforts, including Komen for the Cure. Andres and her family now spend time hosting events like “Confections for the Cure,” a pink dessert party, which raised nearly $2,500, as well as fundraising ef-

forts during both her husband’s and sons’ birthday parties. For the latter, friends were encouraged to bring donations in lieu of gifts, and raised $175 for Komen for the Cure. “Just to listen to those boys cheer each other on as he was opening cards, it was just amazing,” Andres said. In addition to raising money, Andres emphasized the need to raise awareness and to educate more women about the importance of staying on a regular checkup schedule. “Early detection is not a cure, but it saves lives,” Andres said. “When your cancer is detected early, the survival rate is extremely high. Women need to be vigilant about self-exams and getting mammograms.” Andres offered advice for women diagnosed with breast cancer, including the importance of drinking a lot of water to offset some chemotherapy side effects, and avoiding excessive searches for information. “I remember being overwhelmed early on, and it took me about six weeks to get my head around it. You really have to just take it one day at a time. I think that really makes a difference. Also, the Internet is a great thing for information, but it can be scary, and it can be overload.

I did just enough to find out the right questions to ask. Your doctor will tell you about credible sources to go to, because there are a lot of sources out there that are unreliable or misleading. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and be your own advocate, because that way, you can still have some control,” she added.

Race day

This year marks the 20th time Race for the Cure has been held in Toledo, and several new additions will be featured, including a second race in Northwest Ohio. “We decided to launch the inaugural Findlay race,” Pilgrim said. “With the milestone of 20 years, it would be nice to start something else. We are absolutely thrilled about it.” The Findlay Race for the Cure will take place Sept. 28, the day before the Toledo race. For the Toledo race, Downtown streets along the route will close at 6 a.m. Sept. 29, and festivities begin around 7 a.m. Attractions include a survivors’ tent for breakfast, a gift shop and a kids’ area. Carly Kudzia was all about watching Curious George on the family iPad. She didn’t want to play, answer questions or have her photo taken. That temporary shyness melted away when her dad, Ryan, offered her a couple of M&M Minis.

The 3-year-old made a beeline for her bedroom, where she showed off several Curious George stuffed animals and then began cooking in her kitchen. We all got a kick out of that except Kaylee,” their mom, Marla, said and laughed. “I

told her not to put the bag down by the bush. And the bus was there — nothing you could do but wipe it off in the dew on the grass.” Wanting to change the subject, the Monclova Primary School fourth-grader did a trick. “Watch,” Kaylee said, then proceeded to stand on her head. Baseball was next as Brendan, 13,

the rare genetic condition characterized by rapid aging. “I really do think the drugs are working,” Tim said. “Kaylee is doing great, and we know many kids who are doing great way past the age of 13.” Last year, the Halkos learned results from the first drug trial Kaylee participated in from 2007-09. Children in the study showed improvements in weight gain, bone structure and the cardiovascular system. “You never know what’s going to happen for your child when you start a drug trial, and it’s just been quite a success,” said Audrey Gordon, president and executive director of the Progeria Research Foundation. “And for our supporters, they see that we are making progress, that their support is really making the difference in these children’s lives.” To help raise funds for the foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to discovering treatments and a cure, the Halkos will hold the eighth annual Kaylee’s Course on Oct. 12 at Monclova Primary School, 8035 Mon-

clova Road. The 5K run/2-mile walk begins at 10 a.m. The cost is $15 if registered by Oct. 1 or $20 the day of the race. n CARLY CONTINUED FROM 12 Carly climbed aboard her tricycle and rode in the driveway of her Whitehouse home. She hopped off her bike and pulled around a wagon. Then she threw and bounced a ball, clapping and laughing all the while. “Carly has two speeds — Curious George and Mach 1,” Heather, her mom, quipped. It’s been a big year for the little girl: Carly has more teeth and started going to preschool two days a week. “She’s potty-trained now, so that’s exciting,” Heather said. “And she got a big-girl bed.” And she started the triple drug trial for progeria. She is one of 22 children in the United States and 103 in the world with the rare, rapidaging disease. “It was kind of a roller coaster,” Heather said of the July trip to Boston Children’s Hospital to start the trial. “The day I had been dreading as well as anticipating was the infusion day; that was the first actual drug. I just remember being so scared because it’s a 30-minute infusion, how was my 3-year-old going to handle this? “They were so great. Carly was playing with an iPad and she had numbing cream and they put a port in earlier in the morning, so it really wasn’t a big deal. They hooked her up to the machine, she was sitting on my lap and we were talking. “And so I had the moment of relief that it wasn’t horrible and the realization that we were getting our first medicine, that it was really happening, and that we’d been waiting for two

years,” Heather recalled, tearing up. “Then the next day they brought in a gigantic shopping bag full of drugs, all the medicine we needed for the next six months. Boom, they just set it down. It was just like, finally, I’m doing something!” While the Progeria Research Foundation awaits approval for a third drug trial, it expanded the current trial. “We need to still move forward with these children who have been waiting, including Carly; that’s what we’re doing now,” said Audrey Gordon, president and executive director of the foundation. “Our focus with the drug trials and the children is getting them in, getting those other 40 kids in here so they can begin to take some drugs that we hope will help them.” “The trial, with all the kids getting added, Carly included, costs $4 million,” Ryan said. “We’re having Carly’s Party for the Cure to raise money for her drug trial and support the Progeria Research Foundation.” The third annual Carly’s Party for the Cure will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Pinnacle, 1772 Indian Wood Circle, Maumee. There’ll be about 60 raffle and auction baskets, appetizers, a cash bar and music by 56 Daze. Tickets for the 21 and older event are $30 online at teamCarlyQ.com/ events and $35 at the door. “We’re working hard to raise money for the trial and at the same time, our eyes aren’t on just this treatment because it isn’t a cure,” Heather said. “It’s slowing things down, but our ultimate goal is a cure, so we need as much help as we can get.” O

Mark and Nikki Meyers are fulfilling their dream of owning their own business with the opening of Meyers Auto Wash at the corner of Heatherdowns Boulevard and Key Street in South Toledo this weekend. “We have always had a very strong desire to be small business owners in the Toledo area and are overwhelmingly excited that our dream is now coming to the grand opening point,” said Nikki, who co-owns the business with her husband Mark. To celebrate their opening on Sept. 21, the couple is offering free car washes to everyone through Sept. 28. They hope to wash as many as 1,000 cars daily. They said they thought it was a good way to introduce their business to customers in the community. The new car wash with a Key West theme is located on the site of a former gas station. They maintained the original building and added on to it to accommodate the car wash business, Mark said. “We went out of our way to make sure we included as many local companies and workers as possible throughout the building process,” Nikki said. Meyers Auto Wash offers express car washes in three minutes with options costing $5 to $13 with the latest state-of-the-art Sun-Ease equipment. The free use of vacuums is included with every car wash, they said. “We wanted to offer a convenient, quality wash with

cleanliness, speed and free vacuums,” Mark said. Sonny’s The CarWash Factory, the equipment manufacturer, also helped them to design the site plan for the business, which somewhat resembles a fast-food operation and with a drive-thru lane. Cars pull into the lane and up to the menu board to view the various car wash options. They proceed to the automated pay station where they can pay with cash, credit card or a pay-as-you-go that is similar to the E-Z Pass used on the Ohio Turnpike. “We are using technology that allows guests to skip the paying portion of their wash when they are on the pay-as-you-go plan we call Easy Breezy. Instead, they simply have a sticker in their window with a code that is read as they enter the tunnel so there is no need to delay when schedules are so busy,” Nikki explained. The technology offers the latest in “green” car washes available with a Purwater reverse osmosis water recovery system that recycles 100 percent of the water used. “We realize the value of offering a clean, bright, cheery location that caters to families with children,” Nikki said. “We have windows that allow children to see the cars going through the car wash.” The business’ mascot, Ted the Turtle, was named after Mark’s father, Ted Meyers, a Toledo native who played football at The Ohio State University for Woody Hayes and served with the U.S. Marines in Korea. Meyers Auto Wash will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. O

If you want to see what “throwing good money after bad” can do to a team, you can look to the Meadowlands and see what a sack of failure the Jets have become. That is an organization that needs wholesale changes: coach, QB, defense … everything. But nobody wants to make the tough move. At least, not yet. The Browns have made changes at the top of the team, but now it’s time to dig through the roster and weed out the problems there. They correctly recognize that previous management mishandled drafts and free agent signings, putting less-thanstellar teams on the field. They’re not tone-deaf, either — they’re fully aware that this move takes the lone bright spot off the team. But just as the reality show contestant says, “I’m not here to make friends,” the brain trust in Cleveland isn’t here to play nice, or scrape together five wins just for giggles; they’re here to build long-term success. Trading away Richardson hurts now, but it’ll pay dividends down the road. And if Cleveland is that upset, they can go support the winning team in town: the Indians. As golf enthusiasts reluctantly consider putting their clubs into storage, the 2013 Annual Don Campbell Memorial Golf Outing presents one last opportunity to squeeze in 18 holes before the weather turns all while feeding hungry children in and around Toledo. The beneficiary of this year’s outing will be Feed Lucas County Children (FLCC), a Toledo nonSIEBENECK profit organization focused solely on eradicating child hunger in Lucas County by providing hot, nutritious meals to local children. Campbell was a general surgeon at Toledo Hospital for nearly 40 years who died from gastric cancer in 2007. FLCC Executive Director Tony Siebeneck said Campbell was a man who loved people, loved giving back to the community and loved golf. “A group of doctors from the hospital have decided to keep Dr. Campbell’s legacy going, and every year they hold a golf fundraiser for a community organization that

the last several weeks raising awareness of their need and working on plans for a new home. After an inspiring show of support from the majority of Toledo’s print, television and radio outlets to bring publicity to the issue, Siebeneck said he is starting to see some momentum building in the community. “We’ve received some phone calls,” he said. “The community is starting to get involved. This is a tight-knit community, and kids are near and dear to their hearts. Some businesses are starting to talk to us about equipment and design. The pieces are starting to fall into place.” Siebeneck plans to announce the location of FLCC’s future home in the very near future. The Don Campbell Memorial Golf Outing is open to the general public and will begin with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at The Legacy Golf Club in Ottawa Lake, Mich. The cost to play in a four-person scramble is $75 per person with all proceeds benefiting FLCC. A dinner and raffle will follow. FLCC was the beneficiary of last year’s golf outing as well. “What impressed me last year was the caring attitude of the doctors,” Siebeneck said. “As doctors, I think preventing children from going hungry is something they can really get behind. It’s a perfect fit.” For Siebeneck and his organization’s roughly 200 volunteers, the decision to donate the proceeds from this year’s outing to FLCC could not have come at a better time. FLCC is currently engaged in a major campaign to raise $800,000 to build a new kitchen, the first public call for aid in the organization’s 11year history. Siebeneck and FLCC’s board of directors received word over the summer that FLCC would need to move from its current location in the Macomber Building on Monroe Street by 2014. Despite using a model of decentralized distribution, involving 86 locations around Lucas County, the charity still relies on one large central kitchen to prepare and cook some 7,000 meals every day. Such a large operation, which has served 1.5 million meals to Lucas County children in the past ten years, will not fit in an existing food preparation facility such as a restaurant or school cafeteria. Author/legal expert Idiots With Instruments aims to discuss culture of to be a ‘Toledo Woodstock’ bullying on Sept. 26

The Eight Fifteens are excited to perform at “Idiots With Instruments” because of a connection the band has with The Village Idiot. “That is really where it all started for The Eight Fifteens,” the wrote guitarist and vocalist Josh Q. Whitney in an email. “It is more than a bar; it is a community of people, a family that cares for one another.” Twelve acts will perform from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Oct. 6 at The Village Idiot, 309 Conant Street. The show is open to all ages and will showcase talent from Maumee and Toledo that have played and still play at The Village Idiot. “We are very lucky to have a large group of musicians in this town that, instead of stepping on each other to get ahead, help and respect one another,” said Whitney, who coordinated and helped plan the event. This is the first time for the show but Whitney hopes it will not be the last. “I have been tossing the idea of a music fest around in my head for a little while now — to get local bands with originals and covers to perform a ‘Toledo Woodstock,’ if you will,” he said. Nicole Khoury of Arctic Clam, who will perform at the show, said The Village Idiot is the greatest place in town to have a musical event and Toledo musicians are second to none. “To be part of any event that combines the two is always top on our priority list,” Khoury said in an email. The show will include Evan Bates, The House Band, Barile and May, The Killer Flamingos, Andrew Ellis, Old State Line, Bob Rex, The Eight Fifteens, Mike Fisher, Clarence Clamwater, Arctic Clam and Dooley Wilson. Each band will play 45-minute sets. There is a suggested, but not required, $5 donation at the door. “Old State Line is proud to be considered part of the Village Idiot extended family,” Larry Meyer of Old State Line said in an email. “There is a sticker on the door that says ‘Be nice or go home.’ A lot of great people pass

through that door, following that simple rule, and we’re happy to be part of that, let alone this amazing lineup of talent.” Clamwater said he is looking forward to the show. “Any time this many musicians get together and bring this many genres to the table, good things happen,” he said in an email. “It’s great for the community to gain exposure to the local music scene and it’s always a blast for the musicians.” O

Steinbock, dean of UT’s College of Law.  Bazelon is a New York Times Magazine contributing writer. She has spoken to audiences from the Aspen Ideas Festival to the Texas Bar Association to TEDxWomen. She is a member of the Slate “Political Gabfest” and is a frequent guest on “The Colbert Report.” She also has appeared on “Today,” “PBS NewsHour,” “Morning Joe,” “Fresh Air” and “All Things Considered.” Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, O, The Oprah Magazine, The Washington Post and Mother Jones. Gorgeous melodies, cool rhythms, and thought-provoking lyrics — that’s “Aims,” Vienna Teng’s disc due out Sept. 24. In its 11 songs, the singer-songwriter explores everything from daily motivation and online surveillance to the Occupy movement and shipping routes. “This is the first time I’ve felt unreservedly excited about an album,” the pianist said during a call from San Francisco. That may be due to her interest in sustainability. Three years ago, Teng walked away from music to pursue a graduate degree in environmental studies and business at the University of Michigan. “Music and I had gotten to this weird place in our relationship, and I needed to step back for a little while,” she said. “When I started working on this album, I was so excited and it was such a joyful process. I totally forgot that making music could be that much fun.” Her joy is heard in the beat of “In the 99.” ”I think I was listening to a lot of Kanye West at the time, and I came up with this beat where I was clapping and stomping in the shower, and that was actually the first piece of the song,” she said. “The Hymn of Acxiom,” a sacred ode to Big Brother, had a more familiar beginning for Teng. “I sat down at the piano one evening and started playing lullaby-sounding melodies, and I was immediately bored,” she said and laughed. “So I thought well, this is pretty, but what can I do with it? How can a lullaby be creepy? So I

started to think about ways in which you’re rocked gently to sleep by something that actually doesn’t have your best interests at heart. “And I began thinking about data collection with the NSA stuff going on, especially in the last election,” she explained. “You have someone watching you, figuring out what you want and what you need, and it turns out it’s a database.” “Level Up” opens the CD with Teng singing, “If you are alive/Give more.” “That song actually felt like the key to the whole album when I was writing it because I wrote it when I was in a difficult place. I wasn’t actually depressed, but really struggling with the idea of what is the point of being hopeful about anything. “If you look at a lot of the facts about some of the challenges that we’re facing as a society or even as individuals, sometimes it can feel overwhelming,” she said. “I can believe that environmentally we might be doomed or that collectively we’re going to be fighting wars and doing horrible things to each other, but that doesn’t change the fact that I can get up every day and try to be as a good a person as I can be.” The singer’s been waking up with that attitude in Detroit, where she moved after graduating in May. “The rest of the world thinks Detroit is a dysfunctional place; there’s a lot of truth to that, but that’s not the only story,” she said. “I’m really inspired by the people who are drawn to Detroit and make their home in Detroit, and those are the people that I want to be near.” Teng will play two sold-out shows Sept. 26 and 27 at The Ark in Ann Arbor.
