Special Presentation….

Scott, Amundsen & Shackleton, The Race to The South Pole Thursday, September 22nd, 6:30-7:30pm In the early 1900s, Antarctica represented the last major unclaimed and unexplored section of the world. A number of countries were anxious to explore and claim this frozen hostile land for their empires. England would lead the way in sending expeditions to Antarctica for scientific and exploratory reasons. A young naval officer, Robert Falcon Scott was chosen to lead the Antarctic Expedition in 1900. Scott would die in his attempt to reach the Pole, but his efforts and sacrifices would be immortalized in English history. Amundsen, a Norwegian, would succeed in reaching the Pole first but he would never receive the fame and recognition he felt he was entitled to. Lastly, Shackleton, another English explorer would also fail in his attempt to cross Antarctica. He would overcome tremendous physical hardships and would demonstrate unparalleled leadership. These explorers were colleagues and rivals. They faced death and hardships and took risks in search of fame, glory, and riches. Some did so simply to serve King and Country.
