An autonomous space of exception
2017-18 | KADK | CUBA | individual thesis | unbuilt The final year of my masters course was set in Havana, Cuba. Chosen for it’s political, social and spatial uniqueness and current drastic changes the island is going through, we asked the question: what architecture would be appropriate for such a politically charged place? My approach to this was extensive field work through which I became interested in youth empowerment in a socialist context. The primary goal of the project is to offer a platform for ambitious innovators and experiment-ors to build their futures, who are otherwise stifled by the regime. It does this by assuming a level of autonomy from the state, allowing the millennial generation to have a stake in their country whose the revolutionary project has somewhat left them behind. The revolution must revolve.
an autonomous space of exception Using large scale axonometric drawing and a playful graphic style I propose an evolutionary vision avoiding a strict ‘masterplan ‘. I chose to design a selection ‘nodes’ on the large site, leaving much of the site ‘loose’ to evolve over time, contributing to the autonomy of the future users.

The makers space taps into the Cuban culture of tinkering or ‘resolver’. Autonomy through making. This hub combines spaces for prototyping, manufacturing and craft interconnected to enable opportunities for innovation. The design uses traditional brick vaulting techniques avoiding to need for much concrete and steel which is lacking on the island.

RESORT TO REFUGE From guest to host in the 100-home-hotel 2016-17 | KADK | GEORGIA | individual | unbuilt Resort to Refuge is a critical analysis of material, spatial and social aspects of the (re)settlement of Georgia’s internally displaced people’s (IDP’s). It aims to devise a strategy for architectural interventions addressing the challenges faced by the residents of, a particularly affected town, Tskaltubo. I was compelled to explore this subject because of the ever increasing inevitability of forced migrations and the required adaptations. In this project, The Hundred Home Hotel, I suggest maintaining continuity by maintaining the inhabitants in the building whilst (re)introducing layer of hospitality and production. The project offers an alternative to full privatisation in-order to prevent evictions and maintain continuity in the local community. It will also re-enforce the current inhabitants sense of belonging by supporting them to become hosts by combining the programs of hospitality, guests houses and permanent housing.
This project is about re-using as much of the original building fabric as possible. I used photography and additive sketching to produce design ideas for possible additions that would incorporate the additional program and new access routes

‘From guest-house, to hostel, to hotel room, to dorm; these functions are carefully intertwined with domestic space.’
A major aspect to the intervention is to introduce secondary access and reconfigure the circulation opening part of the building to more public access whilst retaining privacy for more permanent residents. This is done with external ramps, stairs and towers.

The organisation of accommodation spaces were grouped temporally for guests and residents of different times periods. This was manifested in the architecture differing through levels of access, shared spaces, privacy and materiality.

STROUDWATER BOATHOUSE Co-living between land & water The duality of the near and the distant, the known and the unknown is a point of friction in modern life. The perpetual traveller can find himself yearning for a sense of belonging whereas the settled can wish for change. The Stroudwater Boathouse seeks to address this within an urban framework proposing a cohousing live-work model, integrating land-based dwellings with the canal boat community. The balanced harmony between the nomadic and the sedentary, is intended to form a place that is both dynamic and grounded This project was inspired by the regeneration of the canals linking the river Severn and Thames and by the Springhill CoHousing community in Stroud.

Balancing the communal and the private were both in plan and section drove the design. The accommodation is book-ended by the common kitchen &workshops to the east and playhouse & music room to the west. The section is also split into work - live - sleep with studios on the ground, shared walkway on the first and private balconies on the second.

FOREST FOOD MARKET Closed loop eating in the city The brief for this joint engineering and architecture project was to design a large food market on a derelict site next to Bristol temple meads station. We chose to focus not just on the selling of local foods but also on production in ultra local food cycle by which as we wanted to minimise inputs and waste. Our solution is a series a glulam cells which catch and store water, grow food and serve as our structure. There is also a pig farm to convert waste food into meat and fertilize the plants to complete the closed loop idea.
The process for this group project was as much about collaboration with engineers as architecture. We laboriously drew and modelled these structural/architectural elements to achieve an elegant and potentially realistic solution. Thanks to group members : Devant Asawla, Harry Tuke and Ana Rita Martins

PRIVATE HOUSE Exposed CLT family home This is a 5 bedroom newbuild private house with an exposed CLT structure. While working at Cullinan studio, I worked with a team on stages D and E taking the planning scheme and starting the detailed design. The most challenging aspect was to design exposed structure details where the timber soffit hit the clearstory glass to give the roof a light floating feel, seamless junctions between roof and walls. My main duties were modelling in Revit and producing drawings.

6. RESORT TO REFUGE Hospitality Housing
WRITTEN WORK 2016-18 | KADK | EXTRACTS OF ESSAYS & OTHER WRITINGS I use reading and writing as an important tool to the design process, to put in order and open up the ideas that the project is putting forward. I find this very useful to clarify intent is politically socially and historically complex situations. Here are some short extracts of my written works that accompany projects.
[...]
‘The host who welcomes the received (the guest), who considers himself the owner of the place, is in truth a guest received in his own home. He receives the hospitality that he offers in his own home; he receives it from his own home - which, in the end, does not belong to him. The host is a guest’ Derrida - 1999 Whilst in Georgia I was interested in the buildings occupied the refugees from the conflicts of the 90’s. This lead me to read and write about the idea hospitality in order to unlock new ideas.
Hospitality [extract written piece exploring the idea of hospitality]
To be a displaced person is to become a guest, to be at the mercy of the hospitality or the hostility of your place of exile. This widely used metaphor of hospitality, in the subject of refugees and asylum seekers, is not benign. It implies hierarchies, borders and temporal constraints. I draw ideas from Jacques Derrida’s extensive writings on the ethics of hospitality. The relational construct of guest and host is temporal, variable, dependant and not necessarily mutually exclusive. The very concept of being a host requires a recognition of said hosts mastery of his domain: to offer, one must possess. Yet, paradoxically, to offer absolute hospitality; i.e, to unconditionally accept the guest without limitations, would be to remove ones mastery and ownership, by the same token removing ones ability to offer hospitality. Here Derrida starts to break down the binary paradigm of guest and host as distinct categories. I am suggesting a project which enables the IDP populations to assume the role of host affirming there place. Yet, there is a paradox here and care must be taken to understand the complex social dynamics and hierarchies involved in mobility and hospitality.
auTonomy depends
The (in)capaciTy of auTonomous spaces
‘..autonomy is relative and nonbinary, it exists on a spectrum. One isn’t either autonomous or not, but part of complex set balances of relative and scalar autonomies. What is an autonomous space and what capacities do they have?’
[...] Among other things, the Cuban revolution was about the strong desire for many of the Cuban people to seek autonomy (as a country) from imperialist and exploitative elite connected to capital and culture coming from the USA. This desire to take charge culminated in a militant driven revolution. In the quest to cut ties from the ‘west’ the island gained a level of autonomy from it. C i u d ad L ib er ta d a spaCe of exCeption
Thomas Isaac Joseph Studie Nr: 160157 | PA:CS
My fieldwork in Cuba lead me to study youth culture in the socialist state. I developed an interest in the idea of autonomy(or lack thereof ) in Cuba and chose to explore the notion through reading and writing.
Autonomy [extract written piece exploring the idea of autonomy]
Along with this revolutionary autonomy was the dream of creating a self-governing island based on equality and socialist values. A palimpsest ready to be redrawn. Wild dreams were realized, golf courses became beautiful art schools, military bases became educational facilities and literacy was propagated through the entire island. Only, this autonomy was short lived and as the process of revolution moved from dream to reality, the newly founded state needed to make new allies in order to survive. Quickly Cuba became an intricate part of the East -West tensions of the cold war aligning with the USSR for much need support. Cutting ties with the west engendered a trade embargo form the USA which still hampers the Cuban economy to this day. Ironically, the small island’s quest for self-determination made it so profoundly entangled with geo-politcs, that the idea of true autonomy seemed impossible.
