Hej, jeg hedder Tom Joseph. I have recently completed the masters program Political Architecture at KADK and I am now a qualified Architect (Maa). I’ve enjoyed a varied experience in three prestigious universities, in different countries giving a me a diverse skill-set and international flare. Over the years I’ve gained multiple professional experiences, not only in award winning architecture firms, but also in the construction and humanitarian fields. I’ve developed strong interests in community-based architecture, social sustainability and active urban design. Now based in Copenhagen, I am part of a design collective, BY.works, engaged in social, political issues and how these concerns can be manifested in built form. Currently, we are exploring the re-use of plastic election posters to build a temporary pavilion at the next Folkemødet on Bornholm. (see https:// byworks.org)
INTERESTS Building
I enjoy construction, especially with timber and an interest in boats having designed my parents house boat - In Blindness We Trust (p 4)
Music
I consider myself amateurishly musical and play guitar, drums and try to play the piano.
Climbing
To stay active during the cold, dark Danish winters I joined the climbing gym Blocs & Walls. It is a social sport, both mentally and physically challenging - hyggelig!

STROUDWATER BOATHOUSE Co-living between land & water The duality of the near and the distant, the known and the unknown is a point of friction in modern life. The perpetual traveller can find himself yearning for a sense of belonging whereas the settled can wish for change. The Stroudwater Boathouse seeks to address this within an urban framework proposing a cohousing live-work model, integrating land-based dwellings with the canal boat community. The balanced harmony between the nomadic and the sedentary, is intended to form a place that is both dynamic and grounded This project was inspired by the regeneration of the canals linking the river Severn and Thames and by the Springhill CoHousing community in Stroud.
A major aspect to the intervention is to introduce secondary access and reconfigure the circulation opening part of the building to more public access whilst retaining privacy for more permanent residents. This is done with external ramps, stairs and towers.

Balancing the communal and the private were both in plan and section drove the design. The accommodation is book-ended by the common kitchen &workshops to the east and playhouse & music room to the west. The section is also split into work - live - sleep with studios on the ground, shared walkway on the first and private balconies on the second.

On site - Design & Build
My family bought a 60’ x 12’ foot (18.2m x 3.6m) steel ‘sail away’ canal boat. We received it empty apart from a plywood floor and spray foam insulation. The challenge was to fit 3 separate sleeping spaces for two growing kids and a couple whilst leaving enough room for family life into 46m2. This was achieved by carefully designing the ‘walls’ as furniture containing all storage & services. Also allowing a generous, wide space connecting front and back of the boat makes the living area feel spacious.

FOREST FOOD MARKET Closed loop eating in the city The brief for this joint engineering and architecture project was to design a large food market on a derelict site next to Bristol temple meads station. We chose to focus not just on the selling of local foods but also on production in ultra local food cycle by which as we wanted to minimise inputs and waste. Our solution is a series a glulam cells which catch and store water, grow food and serve as our structure. There is also a pig farm to convert waste food into meat and fertilize the plants to complete the closed loop idea.
The process for this group project was as much about collaboration with engineers as architecture. We laboriously drew and modelled these structural/architectural elements to achieve an elegant and potentially realistic solution. Thanks to group members : Devant Asawla, Harry Tuke and Ana Rita Martins

PRIVATE HOUSE - BUILT Exposed CLT family home 220m2 This is a 5 bedroom new build private house with an exposed CLT structure. While working at Cullinan studio, I worked with a team on stages D and E taking the planning scheme and starting the detailed design. The most challenging aspect was to design exposed structure details where the timber soffit hit the clearstory glass to give the roof a light floating feel, seamless junctions between roof and walls. My main duties were modelling in Revit and producing drawings.

This state-of-the-art research centre was on-site when I started working on it. As the contractors were laying the foundations, we were finalising the interior fitout with the many different user groups and updating the incredibly complex model and drawings to suit. Working things through as the were going ahead on site was both exciting and nerve-racking. The timber lamella roof came out beautifully.

WINCHESTER WALK Warehouse conversion - Resi 1200m2 Whilst at Cullinan Studio, I worked on this complex retrofit of a five story Victorian brick warehouse. This involved the removal, modification and replacement of a 100 year old timber frame within the warped brick shell. This demanding project required very frequent communication and design workshops with the engineers, site visits and design adaptations. My responsibilities were to build and maintain the BIM model, help design and produce internal packages and liaise with consultants and suppliers.

An autonomous space of exception
2017-18 | KADK | CUBA | individual thesis | unbuilt The final year of my masters course was set in Havana, Cuba. Chosen for it’s political, social and spatial uniqueness and current drastic changes the island is going through, we asked the question: what architecture would be appropriate for such a politically charged place? My approach to this was extensive field work through which I became interested in youth empowerment in a socialist context. The primary goal of the project is to offer a platform for ambitious innovators and experiment-ors to build their futures, who are otherwise stifled by the regime. It does this by assuming a level of autonomy from the state, allowing the millennial generation to have a stake in their country whose the revolutionary project has somewhat left them behind. The revolution must revolve.
an autonomous space of exception Using large scale axonometric drawing and a playful graphic style I propose an evolutionary vision avoiding a strict ‘masterplan ‘. I chose to design a selection ‘nodes’ on the large site, leaving much of the site ‘loose’ to evolve over time, contributing to the autonomy of the future users.

The design uses traditional brick vaulting techniques avoiding to need for much concrete and steel which is lacking on the island.

RESORT TO REFUGE From guest to host in the 100-home-hotel 2016-17 | KADK | GEORGIA | individual | unbuilt Resort to Refuge is a critical analysis of material, spatial and social aspects of the (re)settlement of Georgia’s internally displaced people’s (IDP’s). It aims to devise a strategy for architectural interventions addressing the challenges faced by the residents of, a particularly affected town, Tskaltubo. I was compelled to explore this subject because of the ever increasing inevitability of forced migrations and the required adaptations. In this project, The Hundred Home Hotel, I suggest maintaining continuity by maintaining the inhabitants in the building whilst (re)introducing layer of hospitality and production. The project offers an alternative to full privatisation in-order to prevent evictions and maintain continuity in the local community. It will also re-enforce the current inhabitants sense of belonging by supporting them to become hosts by combining the programs of hospitality, guests houses and permanent housing.
This project is about re-using as much of the original building fabric as possible. I used photography and additive sketching to produce design ideas for possible additions that would incorporate the additional program and new access routes

THE BOTHEY Garden shelter & toilets The Bothey, “a resting place for weary travellers” is a timber framed building serving as garden shed, compost toilets and hang-out space. Whilst volunteering at a community in Devon I took part in the design and build of this hand crafted small building. The posts and beams are green sweet chestnut, a durable hard wood, while the joists and cladding will be larch. This project taught me about traditional timber jointing methods as well as how useful computer modelling can be during construction drawings.

By•Works is a design collective based in Copenhagen, that four friends and I started. We’re engaged in social, political issues and how these concerns can be manifested in built form. We actively explore latent potentials for the space and the matter(s) that form our cities. Currently, we’re exploring the use of a byproduct of representational democracy; the plastic election poster. We have received poster donations and created collaborations with political candidates.
