I like to embrace various ways of working and experimenting crossing multiple platforms, although there is a consistent style and strong design aesthetic that brings my work together. I feel that a hand rendered aesthetic is key to my work, the line quality and mark making define my practice. I work hands on initially utilising mixed media with inks, graphite, coloured pencils, collage and paint. This influences my mark making and textures which I then scan into the computer and can edit and play around with composition and colours. Reportage drawing is a very important aspect of my practice, I often begin projects with location drawings, which help provide inspiration. I feel the quickness of the drawing and the looseness of the line that is achieved from drawing in situ help to form a narrative. I am particularly interested in people and people within places, capturing sense of place and scale. In this final year I discovered the Lithography printing and have tried to use it as much a possible whilst I am still able to. I found that it is a good medium for my way of working as it captures the tonal and textural aspects of my drawings and adds another dimension to the reportage work so it is not just confined to a sketchbook. The process is quite time consuming but is really interesting and the results usually seem worth the effort Animation is also an area of illustration that my practice often expands into. I think it is important to illustrators to cross disciplines in order to broaden their audience. I greatly enjoy learning new techniques in animation and seeing my ideas come to life.

I N S P I R A T I O N Shapes, colour and texture from things I have found or from places I have visited can offer great inspiration to my work. Also I find inspiration through different mediums such as graphic design, photography and film, in particular Wes Anderson with his amazing eye for colour, symmetry and style. I find getting out on location and drawing too constantly helps drives my work forward, especially when I am working on a difficult project that seems to be slowing down, drawing on location can help provide a different perspective and approach that can be applied to the project. Fortunately whilst being at university I have been able to visit Pick Me Up twice and both times I have loved the work on display and even seeing the clever ways that it has been presented and have come away full of inspiration. Although I am constantly inspired by other peoples work I think it is important not to spend too long looking at other people fovr inspiration but also experiencing things outside of the world of art and design. I am a keen cyclist and regularly take to the surrounding areas of my home in Surrey and Bournemouth whilst I have been at University to push myself and discover new amazing places. The time I spend in the saddle I find inspires me greatly, the freedom I experience often allows me to generate ideas

PRE - MAJOR PROJECT After the positive response I received to my animation at the end of level five I was keen to expand my work in this medium and found that the beginning of level 6 was a good opportunity to introduce myself to new techniques and ideas in animation. For the Pre-major Project I worked in collaboration with another student to create a narrative based animation. I learnt a lot from working in collaboration whilst it was sometimes difficult to arrange times to meet up and work together I think the different opinions and criticisms that we shared helped to refine the work. I learnt a few new 3-D modelling programs, which was very beneficial to the animation as it helped us to visualise some of the models from every angle, which is something that I will perhaps use more in the future.

I was excited to start the final Major Project working on a subject I enjoy and to see how my work would evolve seeing how my ideas would evolve. It started well with lots of reportage drawings in new locations which I enjoyed and submitted to the Reportager competition and trying to find an aesthetic I liked with the animating using 3D modelling software and digital drawing. But I felt the that my work was too conflicting, there was no correlation between the it and felt I needed some focus and clarity. I decided to stop the animation and concentrate on drawing and other mixed media. I set myself little projects making several zines which taught me about composing images better and helped me progress in the project. Also towards the end of the project I entered the Velo Sur Mer competition to design posters for a series of cycle events, this was well suited for my project and gave me more direction. I think that this opportunity was great as it allowed me to refine my practice and was a chance to think about my work in a professional environment and to enhance my portfolio

Even though I like to work in traditional mediums initially the majority of my work eventually becomes digital, I feel that it is important to consider how my work will look across various platforms. Especially now as the Internet is such an important tool for an illustrator as it is often the first place that potential clients will see your work. Constancy and connectivity between website, blogs and social media, will also help to create a recognisable identity for my work. Website – My website will act as an online portfolio showcasing my best, finished work to potential clients, so it is important to portray my professionalism. Building the website has allowed me to learn some basic coding skills, which I used to design the site to my preference. I have also included links to my other digital platforms as well as a contacts page so it is simple for potential clients to get in touch. Blog – My blog on Tumblr is used to present my work in progress, experimentation and inspirations to give people an insight into how I work. It also has good interactivity Twitter – Is a good platform to network and broaden the awareness of my work to a larger audience and can learn about competitions and exhibitions that I may have missed previously.

The quality of my portfolio is a clear sign to a potential client what they can expect to receive from you. The layout, curation and quality of print shows that you are serious about what you do and helps to convey what standards I will offer with my work. Digital Portfolio - I plan on making a digital copy of my portfolio to send to clients in PDF format which will be a quick and easy way to show my work Printed Portfolio - It is important to have a physical copy of my portfolio in order to take to interviews and in meetings with potential clients. I have got this professionally printed on nice paper alongside some original prints.

During the summer before final year started I got the option to be part of the Princes Drawings school’s drawing marathon they put on to promote their new Oxford street studio. This was a good opportunity to push my abilities and break out of my comfort zone in observational drawing. It was also a chance to decide whether I wanted to further my education after I graduate. Although I decided against applying I am pleased I did it

I feel like my work has developed a lot over the course of being at AUB I feel my understanding of the illustration industry has improved greatly and this has alloVwed me to understand what contexts my work is suited to and whether what I communicating is effectively portrayed. This understanding will help to inform how I promote my work Business Cards – I have made a set of business cards that includes all my contact details, which I will hand out to people interested in my work. The end of year show in London and Reportager exhibition will be a good opportunity for handing them out and networking with other Illustrators Zine – I plan on producing a zine based on my portfolio that will act as a mini showcase of my work I can mail this out to ideal clients that I would love to work for Business Stationary – Across all of my work the visual identity of my practice needs to be consistent so I will make contracts, invoice and letterheads that tie in with my visual identity

During second year I was asked to produce some illustrations for West Beach (A restaurant on Bournemouth beach). Although nothing came of it in the end it was an interesting experience. We had several meetings to discuss what the client wanted and I learnt the importance of being prepared and presenting my work professionally.

C O M P E T I T I O N S During the final year at AUB the opportunity arose for me to submit work to the Reportager competition run by Gary Embury who came in to give a lecture about the Reportager organisation he set up. This was very interesting and gave a good insight into other reportage practitioners and their ways of working. As a result of entering I was chosen to be one of the exhibitors in a show held in Bristol and shortlisted for the final round of judging, This was really good to see that my work will be shown alongside other great reportage practitioners and gives me more confidence in my practice. Velo Sur Mer; a cycling organisation based in Bournemouth, hosted another competition during final year which helped to form part of my outcome of the major project. The brief was to produce a set of posters to advertise the series of cycling races that they were hosting throughout the year. This project helped to give direction to my FMP as I had a final outcome that I needed to work towards also I learnt about contacting the client in a professional manor.

E X H I B I T I O N S The Observatory - I am looking forward to exhibiting my work along side my peers in a professional exhibition in London after we graduate. I was involved in the design team for creating the logo and posters for it. I found this quite a challenge, as there was a lot of pressure to make sure the majority of the exhibitors was happy with the design. Initially one of my designs for the logo was chosen by the group however the image was not very strong because it was a pencil line drawing with small details therefore it didn’t work well on a small scale or a large scale. Therefore we needed to re-do the design to make it work across platforms so it was an effective logo. Using Adobe illustrator was the best way of achieving it as it is vector based and good for being scaled without losing quality. Carousel – A small group of fellow illustrators decided to organise an exhibition in the factory studio in Boscombe. This was an exciting opportunity for us to present ourselves in a professional environment and so we can gain some experience of exhibiting before our grad show, so we can learn about presentation, curating and promotion of the event. Reportager - As a result of submitting work to the Reportager competition my work was shortlisted and chosen to be part of an exhibition at UWE alongside some other great illustrators, which is a great opportunity and I am looking forward to the private view. Additionally I had some of my work exhibited in the AUB Illustration Silent auction and at the Christmas market, it was good to see some of my work sell and shows that I am heading in the right direction.

The future is slightly intimidating but also very exciting. My immediate plans after graduating from university will be to move back home and find a job in the creative industry whilst still taking commissions and making work in order to enable me to continue working on and furthering my portfolio. Luckily I live relatively close to London so this will hopefully give me plenty of opportunities for applying to internships and design agencies as well as being able to visit exhibitions and events to keep up my awareness of the industry. I plan on staying in contact with some of the other graduates in hopes of possible collaborative projects in the future. Ideally I would love to join an agency such as Heart as I feel my work is suited to the aesthetic they have formed with their other illustrators. Alternatively I would enjoy working as part of a design team in the creative industry, a company such as Rapha would be amazing to work for, combining two of my passions. Signing up with the Association of Illustrators I feel is essential to my practice, their advise will be extremely important in order to pursue my goals as an illustrator. Their presence will give myself as well as my clients the assurance that the legal side is fully considered. They also publish Varoom magazine, something that I have taken full advantage of being available in the studio; it is an interesting read and broadens my awareness of other practitioners and techniques. I attended lectures from Anna Steinberg during third year, which I found to be very useful, she explained issues surrounding the rights of illustrators including copyright, contracts, and communications between a client and pricing work. This has given me greater confidence and knowledge of the industry to deal with a tricky client if I am in that situation.
