HOW TO SET UP A QUARK FILE FOR A CURVED POP-UP 3X3 SEMI LEGER SYSTEM 1. Set up a new Quark document 159.75mm x 538.75mm. This is a quarter size of the final dimensions of 639mm x 2155mm. 2. In the document layout palette, drag 4 more pages from A-Master A next to each other. 3. For this guide we are assuming that your design runs across a panel. If this is the case you should set two guides on pages 1 - 5. For page 1, drag a guide from the vertical ruler (on the left of the window) to approx 80mm in from the left of page one and 80mm in from the right of page 5. This will define the non-viewable areas. 4. For a six panel system, simply add extra pages from A-Master A. 5. Note that when text runs across two panels, make sure that none of the characters are actually on the join itself as this will allow easier alignment of the finished panels.

Various sized systems are available and many custom layouts are possible using a combination of sy stems.

The Digichrome process prints images at 200 or 400 dpi. However, your actual scan resolution should be dictated by 3 factors:-

• All scans individually scanned for best results (no gang scanning) • Scanning from colour negative to positive CMYK – for best results supply a print from negative for reference • Under Colour Removal (UCR), Unsharp Masking (enhancement & degradation of detail) and defocus/descreening available on request • Tonal value and colour cast manipulation, including mid-tone, quarter tone and shadow values • All scans CMYK or RGB split for repro purposes and supplied with low-res free of charge if requested. We will replace low res scans in document with high res on return for separated film or colour proofs at no extra charge. • Reduction and enlargement from 9% – 3000%. Up to 3200 dpi colour scans at no extra cost • Full range of image manipulation from clipping paths to montages by quotation • Custom duotone and achromatic scanning • Scanning orders over £50 written to CD free • Scanning from mono negative and transparency • Global colour correction available call us on our freephone number

0800 169 0875 if you have any specific queries

1 Detail required Suggested res 2 Viewing distance Suggested res 3 Master Image Max scan size

Max 400dpi 1ft 150-200dpi 35mm 45Mb

Average 125dpi 2-6ft 100-150dpi 6x7cm 100Mb

Low 72dpi over 6ft 72-100dpi 5"x4" 10"x8" 200Mb 350Mb

All resolutions refer to final output size Other points to consider • Most monitors display at 72dpi. Try looking at the graphics on your monitor at the distance you would expect images to be finally viewed and you should see the distance/resolution connection. • Master detail refers to the level of detail available from the transparency before the scanner starts to pick up film grain. It is cheaper to image size the file in Photoshop to the minimum required size for output. • Remember, you usually crop only sections from transparencies – and this can significantly reduce detail available/scan size. • Beware of 10"x 8" and 5"x 4" transparencies. They are usually digitally retouched copies of the original. This effectively halves the scan detail available from them. • Beware poor duplicates of originals (especially library transparencies). Duping can lose a significant amount of detail.

Durst Lambda • The Durst Lambda is a large photographic printer which images from disk in continuous tone. Each individual pixel is one of 16.8 million colours. Consequently, there is no dot pattern (since no screen is required), making it the most accurate contone printer in the world. • Small text can appear soft because the line resolution is not as high as a 600 dpi inkjet. On the other hand, with no dot pattern, contone images are equivalent to 2400dpi compared to ink based print systems.

19

• The Lambda is roll fed. Maximum length is approx. 50m. Max width is 1270mm including crops. • The Durst Lambda uses advanced Kodak CMS CMYK to RGB conversion. This means colours can be specified CMYK or RGB without significant colour shift. Just ask for a Colour Test Chart to work from.

• Lambda photographic prints are fade resistant, with a minimum 4 year life without colour deterioration under normal lighting conditions. There is no better system for longevity.

• Disk compression i.e. Stuffit, DiskDoubler or Compactor has little effect on the Durst Lambda. Pho toshop EPS JPEG maximum quality and full resolution TIFF files are OK. Where there is very smooth tonal changes e.g. professionally shot products with side light, curved surfaces or smooth flesh tones, TIFF files should be used.

• The Lambda prints on matt or gloss photographic paper, clear film, polyester film or Duratrans for back lighting. Duratrans are dramatically better than ink jets on film substrates.

• Normal turnaround for the Lambda is 24 hrs for prints or 48 hrs mounted and laminated. Rush service is available at extra cost. For less than 24hrs add 50%; less than 12hrs add 100%.

• Durst Lambda requires 44Mb of RGB TIFF data per square metre (i.e. 100 dpi at final size) for exhibition stands or 177Mb per square metre (i.e. 200-400 dpi at final size) for small exhibition prints. Images can be supplied RGB or CMYK. Always add bleed to pages that are being mounted. • The Durst Lambda is fully PostScript so you can enlarge vector graphics without loss of quality. Similarly, you can set documents at 25% final size for convenience. • The Durst Lambda will not print DCS files or TrueType fonts. Do not use the Style Menu in Quark Xpress for typog raphic effects as they will of ten print incorrectly.

Dye Sublimation C3imaging is one of the UK’s leading specialists in Thermo or digital dye sublimation printing. This process involves printing an image on paper and transferring it under intense heat and pressure onto a polyester material or fabric. The material can then be fashioned into a garment, banner, flag or carpet tile. The range of products produced by sublimation is endless. Sublimation printed products can withstand repeated washing and ironing. The image quality is superb and permanent. Digital technology allows you to produce short run, high quality banners, leisure garments and flags at a fraction of the cost of conventional processes. •

Substrate Specification Polyester printing is produced via dye sublimation. The prints are produced by a specially adapted Electrostatic plotter. These prints are dyed at a high temperature and pressure onto the recipient fabric. The prints and material are literally fused together to form a permanent bond. Fabrics produced using this method are machine washable and can be pressed using a conventional iron. Dye Sublimation fabrics do not fade like con ventional fabrics. There are over 5000 types of Polyester. These materials are usually marketed under brand names. Polyesters are used in the manufacture of flags, banners and garments. Digital Dye Sublimation is the perfect medium for high quality, permanent fabrics for presentation, point of sale, fashion or exhibitions. Our price includes stitching, eyeletting and finishing.

How To Supply Logos Logos and other elements that are required for large format output may have to be blown up considerably larger than normally used for print; therefore it is essential they meet certain criteria for acceptable output. Follow these guidelines in order to produce optimum results.

29

• Ideally any elements needed for a logo should be supplied as Illustrator, Freehand or similar object dr awn graphics files. • If they contain any scanned elements these should be suitable resolution for large format output and should be supplied separately as linked files and not embedded in other documents. • If the logos/elements are only available as scanned images then they should be at least 100dpi at final size for output but ideally 200dpi. Image sizing smaller files up to the required resolution will not produce satisfactory results. • Scanned images can be supplied in TIFF, EPS, BMP, JPEG or Photoshop formats and sent to us via ISDN on 020 7 833 9779 or emailed to work@c3londoncity.com

Logos taken from the internet like these are no t suitable due to their low resolution (72dpi)

• Logos taken from internet pages (72dpi) are unsuitable for large format output unless you are downloading from a site where there is a specific option to download high resolution versions and even these are sometimes unusable. • Where a reasonable scanned version is available, it is often possible to redraw a logo for a specified price. However some internet logos are such low quality that it is not even possible to satisfactorily redr aw them. • If you need any advice just call our team on 020 7833 9100

All information is correct to our knowledge at the time of printing and is supplied free of charge on a goodwill basis. However we cannot be held responsible for any problems caused, or arising from the use of these guidelines.
