Hotel - Albarquel’s artillery battery

Location : Setúbal, Portugal

Date : 2022

This architectural endeavor presents a vision to transform an ancient military battery in Setúbal, Portugal, into a hotel. The design focus on integrating with the historical context, providing a unique guest experience with panoramic views, and minimizing the impact on the landscape.

The existing military tunnel structure is incorporated into the hotel’s layout, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the site’s history. Each hotel room offers private sanctuaries along side open living spaces with expansive views.

This project showcases architectural preservation, reimagining a historic site that seamlessly combines history, nature, and a user focused design.

The proposal for the new waterline that we present has a striking feature: it varies according to the tide. After studying the altimetry of the different tides of the Sado River in our intervention area, we designed platforms, ramps, and stairs to control the shape of the waterline.

The final project proposal is the result of the evolution of a coastline where the bathhouse building plays a crucial role. It acts in sync with the pre-existing urban rule and, at the same time, creates new ways of interacting with the Sado River.

Together with our initial idea of bringing Setúbal’s old coastline back, giving the bastion the contact with the water it once had, we then decided that the bastion should be surrounded by a water mirror, with the possibility of retaining water in case of a flood.

Housing project in Beato, Lisbon

Location : Lisbon, Portugal

Date : 2023

The project comprises two distinct yet interconnected sub-projects: a single-family housing development and a multifamily one. From the outset, my design process was deeply rooted in addressing topographical challenges and external factors such as floods, irrigation, and the preservation of existing trees.

The urban design aimed to restore the terrain to its state before human interventions, including a former cotton factory and two railways. This istorical context informed the placement of houses, aligning them harmoniously with the natural topography.

Additionally, a water basin was introduced that serves a dual purpose: it safeguards against potential floods and adds a captivating water element to the park.

The houses themselves were conceived to be adaptable, allowing families to expand their living spaces without incurring additional costs or complications. I placed significant emphasis on fostering a strong connection between the residences and the surrounding natural environment. This was achieved by prioritizing privacy within the interior spaces and courtyards. In each house variant (T1, T2, or T3), a courtyard seamlessly extends into the adjacent public park, establishing a serene and integrated relationship with nature.

In the multifamily housing segment, four buildings, two with three stories and two with four, were strategically sited at the highest point in the park. These buildings feature diverse layouts, encompassing both T2 and T3 configurations, with the four-story variant including T2s and T0s on the top floor. The layouts were carefully designed for compactness and efficiency, facilitating an intimate connection with the park. This is exemplified by the generous glass expanses, allowing residents to engage fully with the natural surroundings.
