Vacation and Recycling: Stand Back! By Michelle Freed
I recently got back from a nine-day vacation in Colorado, or as I like to call it, Mountain Tour 2011. Only I didn’t have to perform anywhere, unless you count the late night karaoke stint at a tiny bar in Creede. I certainly didn’t get paid for my rendition of Stevie Nick’s Stand Back, but I did have a drunken tourist ask me to sign his bar napkin – right before he passed out cold. But that’s a whole different story. My family traveled throughout the state, visiting relatives and good friends, and I personally drank over a case of wine. I have bug bites, fantastic memories and a five-day recovery program in hand, including detoxification from my mother’s homemade pies. But what made the biggest and most lasting impression on me was our visit to the beautiful and quite lethargic city of Boulder. It’s been about five years since I was last there, and well, things have changed dramatically. You now have to earn a certificate in Recycling and Waste Reduction Strategies before stepping foot within city limits. This was a little frustrating, as I had not studied the latest composting techniques. On the first night of our arrival, we met a large cluster of relatives at my cousin’s home for a reunion. After dinner, I went to dispose of my paper products and crumbs, and was thrown into a state of confusion. There were multiple containers set out with labels, including: Composting, Recycling and Landfill. At first, I was not shaken. After all, my family proudly recycles paper products, aluminum, glass and plastics. We dispose of all our chemicals and batteries properly, and we reduce and reuse when we can. How hard could this be? But as I stood before the bins, I doubted myself. My water bottle went in, but I had to take the lid off and put it in the Landfill container. This made me frantic, as I envisioned a mountain full of spiteful white lids, suffocating little squirrels and smothering trees. Composting threw me off, as I didn’t know paper napkins could fit the bill. After about fifteen minutes and a deep conversation with myself, I finished my disposal process, only to find a snickering audience behind me, watching my every move. “We wondered how you’d handle it,” said a cousin from Texas. “We went through the same thing, only you took longer.” This began what was soon known as The Recycling 4

Game, where we, like a bunch of prepubescent tweens, systematically examined our unsuspecting elders as they tried to clean up after themselves. Those who performed properly received cheers and thunderous applause. Those who failed were publicly humiliated and made to try again. We found the same challenges at our hotel (The Boulder Outlook, Boulder’s First Zero Waste Ready for a hike in Boulder, Colo., and Hotel), where the yes, we recycled our water bottles. daily complimentary breakfast included mandatory recycling challenges that ultimately led to my withdrawal from public. The pressure was too great. I chose to take my meals within the safety of Room 205, forcing the cleaning staff to make the recycling decisions for me. I figured they’d been properly trained. All the restaurants we visited were the same, and I developed a mild case of paranoia, as I soon suspected that even on hiking excursions there were probably Recycling Enforcement Agents lurking behind the pine trees ready to dole out fines. Ultimately I learned the ropes, and found new confidence in my recycling abilities. I’d like to think my vacation was not only fun, but educational. I’m now trying to figure out how to build a compost bin in my garage … if I can only get used to the smell and the friendly worms that will surely follow. Denise Silk brings a fresh set of eyes to the real estate market in Geist. When her husband Bruce was transferred to Indianapolis after 38 years of living in Boca Raton in south Florida, this

their family. They fell in love with the natural beauty of the area. “When we looked at homes around Geist, the first thing we did was look out the window to assess the view. Seeing water was an important element in this process,” she said. “Water has life; it has movement. It changes with the wind, sparkles with the sun, gives access to all sorts of wildlife, as well as provides a peaceful environment for living as you watch an evening sunset or a morning sunrise.”

Denise enjoys walking and finds the hilly terrain perfect for her and her dog, Cali. Cali, adopted from the pound, was abused by prior owners but is a sweet dog and is really adapting to her new home. Most mornings this pair covers a couple of miles through their neighborhood, something Cali looks forward to each day. “It’s a peaceful way to start the day, enjoying the woods and mature trees in the neighborhood and it is always a pleasant surprise to spot a deer or small fox in the quiet of the morning” she remarked. Denise is a woman that enjoys life with passion and balance on equal levels. In Florida, she specialized in luxury waterfront homes and loved that market, sometimes even showing a property by boat. “In my experience as a real estate agent, I know how important location is. You can change a house from the inside out, but you can’t rearrange the land that the house sits on. Finding a house that fits the buyers’ lifestyle and budget relies on a realtor’s experience and knowledge of the area. I sell where I live (Geist area) and I love what I do. Mother/Daughter Team Stitches Together a New Business By Jenn Kampmeier
Opening the French Seam in May of this year was a dream come true for mother Linda Compton and daughter Courtney Young. After years of tireless research and business planning, the two seamstresses dove right into their exciting venture. Courtney proudly said, “My mother and I are both selftaught sewers and have been sewing our whole lives. My grandmother taught my mother and my mother taught me. Sewing has seen such a resurgence over the past few years, as people are looking for new ways to express themselves creatively. We felt that there was a need to offer the creative community in Indiana an option for finding quality fabrics locally, as well as supporting independent pattern designers by carrying their products in our shop.” Courtney has a business degree from Marion University, and her mother has started several successful businesses. They are thrilled to be working on this venture together.

The French Seam offers fine fabrics including woolens, cottons, linens, silks, designer fashion fabrics, European fabrics from France and Italy and a wide selection of modern cottons. “We also have a wide variety of sewing patterns, books and notions. The shop is also currently getting ready to launch sewing classes in our studio for all skill levels, including introductory classes for those new to sewing,” Courtney added.

The main goal for the The French Seam is to be able to continue to offer fine fabrics to sewers throughout the region. They have attracted customers from outside of the state and would like to become a destination shop for people seeking the best fabrics for their creative projects. They want to reinforce that the Indianapolis community is thriving, and sewing is a hobby/art that anyone can learn at any point in their life.

Like any new business, the sewing duo has had some challenges. One of the biggest challenges was developing an idea of what the store should be like. To their knowledge, a new fine fashion fabric store hadn’t opened in this part of the country for the past 10-20 years. When asked about any advice she might give a new business owner, Courtney said, “The most important thing that we did was over two years of market research on our business. We travelled all over the country exploring different types of hobby stores. It was so important in helping us develop our version of what a modern fabric store should look like. Without that research, this venture never would have happened. The short answer is… do your homework.” Courtney’s favorite quote? Smiling, she quickly said, “If you obey all the rules you miss all the fun” (Katherine Hepburn). It certainly looks that way!

Holy Cross Lutheran School Expansion By Marcia Ellett
The Holy Cross Lutheran School in Geist (at 8115 Oaklandon Road) has come a long way. Opening in 1991 as a preschool with 17 children, it now offers kindergarten through the seventh grade and has more than 300 students hailing from more than 20 Indiana zip codes.

Holy Cross Lutheran School has embraced technology in a big way. Teachers often utilize iPads, Mobile Interactive Whiteboards (MOBIs™) and classroom response clickers, among other tools. “Even the kindergarteners use the clickers,” said Geiger. “Technology is such a huge piece for kids.” There is a new science curriculum, too, through Discovery Education, which employs online instruction and streaming videos but no textbook. The school is also focused on providing individualized education for its students. students’ level of comprehension so teachers have a reference point for each student. “Academic excellence is meeting the child’s needs,” said Geiger. The school doesn’t neglect the creative mind or the physical body either. Its Afternoon with the Arts program brings in artists from the community, including dancers and a violinist, among others, and PE is offered twice a week. “Kids need lots of movement,” said Geiger. “It’s good for the brain.” While only 25 percent of the students attending the school are members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the congregation has played an enormous role in raising funds for the school’s expansion, donating generously to the recent For Those to Come 3 Capital Campaign. North Side Residents Featured in New 9/11 Music Video By Michelle Freed
When musician Daniel Mark Baird, 40, traveled from Elkhart, Ind., to the north side of Indianapolis over this past July 4th weekend, he wasn’t just looking to celebrate a patriotic holiday. He attended a number of community events, including Carmel’s Fourth of July parade, in order to shoot video footage of typical Americans honoring their country. The results? The images were used to create a music video for Baird’s song, The Eagle Still Flies, which can now be seen in its entirety online. The song has been in development for years. The first version was written by Daniel’s sister, Danette Baird of Muncie, Ind., shortly after the tragic events of 9/11. She
then asked Daniel for help, and through a collaborative effort, the song was completed and a demo was recorded in 2002. But without any high-powered music executives behind it, the demo sat idle for years. Last year, with the tenth anniversary Danette Baird of 9/11 fast approaching, the brother and sister team took action. With the assistance of veteran Nashville producer and studio musician Shane Keister, a new recording of the song was made. But in today’s world of social media, Daniel knew that a video would have to be part of the package. So over this past summer, he worked with video director Luke Renner of Fireside Films to get the job done. “You just don’t know when you go into something like this how hard it’s going to be,” says Daniel. “It’s been an incredible amount of work, but to have something in the end that is so moving, it makes it all worth it.”

Today, with a completed song and video to boot, their hard work is paying off. Local television stations have taken notice, and the attention is spreading. Daniel is scheduled to perform the song at a number of 9/11 events, including a September 11 appearance at the 9/11 Heroes

ave Colt can almost pinpoint the day when he figured out what he wanted to do with his life. It was around April in 1996 when he brewed a batch of beer, and he was hooked. Later on, while the brewery at the downtown Ram restaurant, he and some friends started kicking around the idea of a brewery of their own. And the seed – a barley seed, of course – was sown. Sun King Brewery is the result of around 30 years of craft beer development in the U.S. After Jimmy Carter deregulated the beer market in 1979, home brewers got busy concocting tastier (and stronger) alternatives to the giant commercial beer market, then dominated by companies like Budweiser and Miller. And many got serious. So serious that an entire new industry of microbrewing sprang up like carbonation bubbling from the bottom of a mug. The revolution really hit Indiana in 1989. Microbreweries produce fewer than 15,000 barrels of beer per year, and all stress two things: quality and diversity. Fast forward to 2008. Colt had been honing his craft, as had other local beer zealots, and an alliance of expertise, skill, funding, and passion found its ideal mix. From the beginning, the founders of Sun King had a simple vision: Make beer that tastes good. Although other breweries throughout the state were well on their way to carving out a respectable Hoosier craft beer profile, Sun King was the first production brewery since the Indianapolis Brewing Company closed its doors in 1997. Their goal was to become “Indianapolis’ brewery,” and after seeing nearly 800% growth over just last year, the demand for Sun King beer has literally gone off the charts.

The beauty of cream ales is in a brewing style that allows canned beer to closely resemble true draft beer. Little did they know how much the beer quaffing public craved that taste, too. Enter Sunlight Cream Ale. “It’s by far our best seller,” Colt said. Sun King’s Cream Ale is one of the reasons that the brewery’s products are now in over 450 bars, restaurants, and liquor stores throughout central Indiana. But from the beginning, Sun King has always been about being local. “Our focus will always be Indy, Carmel, Fishers, Geist, Greenwood,” Colt said. Carmel, in fact, was a place where Dave and his wife looked around and realized they had found the place to raise their family. “It’s the convenience. Everything you need is right there.”
Drinking Buddies Back when Fishers resident Andy Fagg was a full-time engineer, he also loved to drink beer at the Circle V Brewery, where Colt was assistant brewer. It wasn’t long

toward getting people in the door is not what Sun King is about. It’s all about the beer. “You can come down to the tasting room and see us working right across the rope from you,� Fagg said. They believe that you really get only one or two chances with the kind of beer drinkers who typically enjoy nothing more adventuresome than a Bud Light, so consistency is essential. “Consistent taste will build the brand,� Fagg said. “There’s stuff that Dave can taste that I can’t – he’s got a sense of what’s flawed and can translate that directly into how to correct it through the brewing process.� Through weekly tastings on quality control at the brewery, consistency is king indeed.
before a small group of likeminded beer lovers began getting serious about their vision for a craft beer operation that would offer Indy the brewery it seemed to have been clamoring for. By selling only carryout and partnering with a few key bars downtown early on, Sun King slowly whetted its customers’ whistles. Colt, Fagg, Clay Robinson, and Clay’s father Omar formed a brewing operation that created something people started asking for. “People who already liked it started asking other bars to put it on,� Fagg said. And now, it’s controlled growth; there’s only so much beer they can brew, and the best way they can control the quality of the product is to not get too big too fast. The Sun King crew sought to create not just beer that tasted good, but to do it in a way that was transparent about their love of the product. Slick marketing campaigns targeted

From Grain to Glass Perhaps the most unique aspect of Sun King’s operation is that they are their own distributors. Yet the relationship remains good with the big distributors because what’s good for Sun King is generally good for other microbrewers. By helping the craft category of beer in general, they elevate demand for all craft beers. Being its own distributor, though, means that Sun King controls its product “from grain to glass.� It also means their staff handles everything – orders, delivery, installation, and maintaining the draft lines. At this point, Sun King could sell their beer almost anywhere (they regularly get offers from all over the U.S. to carry their beer), but they realize how easy it would be to lose touch. Indy has such a large market potential for craft beers within a 50-mile radius, they think there’s still a lot

to be accomplished in Marion and the doughnut counties. “We can make plenty of beer here and be happy,” Fagg said. Where St. Louis has Schlafly and Boston has Harpoon, the brewers at Sun King believe Indianapolis is too large not to have one of those – and they want to be it. The challenge, according to Fagg, is maintaining the growth while keeping consistency in taste the number one goal. “It’s a brain problem – keeping track of tank capacity, storage, and kegs and making sure that keeps pace with sales.”

Bartender Ben Nicholas confirms that Cream reigns supreme. “It’s extremely popular. There are those days where, for whatever reason, people will just drink us out of it.” Nicholas confirmed the owners’ contention that Sun King spreads mainly through word of mouth. “We start carrying certain varieties because people ask for it.”
Not many of us can walk into a pub and order a beer we created. But both being northsiders, Colt and Fagg have the opportunity to drink their brews at the places they hang out. When Fagg started frequenting Pinheads (13825 Britton Park Rd., Fishers) after he and his wife had a child, you can guess what kind of new beer they put on tap. While they love seeing Sun King in their neighborhoods, lots of room for expansion exists in communities like Carmel.
Perhaps one of the best ways to sample Colt’s passion (“Dave is a very skilled German lager- style brewer,” Fagg said) is by checking out the Oktoberfest tapping at the Sun King Brewing Company (located at 135 N. College Avenue) from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 1. Indeed, there seems to be little doubt about it, Sun King has tapped into a Hoosier market thirsty for something a little different. And by brewing local, producing local, and distributing local, Indianapolis may have just discovered that the King of Beer is right in its own backyard.

share their ideas, and get discounts and direction from their very own demonstrator who uses Stampin’ Up products. “I like to do crafty, artsy things,” says Elizabeth Murphy, demonstrator for a Stampin’ Up group that meets once a month in her home. Elizabeth has been affiliated with this exciting assembly for about five years. With the Stampin’ Up Company, she orders products online, such as cardstock papers, ribbons, markers, and stamp pads, in which everything coordinates impeccably well with matching colors. She in turn, provides her group members with a discount for these products. She has mastered her creativity to the level that she feels confident making her own greeting cards and party favors. Plus, not only did she make her own wedding invitations, but she also made them for her friends at work. The Stampin’ Up clan, however, doesn’t only make cards alone. “We take everyday household items and turn them into something unique,” says Elizabeth. For example, she has taken paint cans, covered them with decorative cardstock

Another clever transformation was a project that entailed folding two or three lunch sacks together and embellishing them to create a mini-scrapbook album. This idea was brought to the group by BethAnn Buehler, a group member who has also become a demonstrator for Stampin’ Up products. Both she and Elizabeth originally met years ago when they both attended meetings using these products. Now, in addition to being good friends, they both serve as demonstrators hosting creative events in their own homes.

Photographic Artist Uses Metallic Medium to Create Unique Images Story by Marcia Ellett
Looking at the world through a camera lens sometimes reveals a perspective or a secret one doesn’t see with the naked eye. Discovering these gems, these visual stories, is a passion for artistic photographer Stanislaw Goc, otherwise known as Slawek, a native of Warsaw, Poland, turned Geist resident.

With a background of working in theatre and film in Europe, Slawek followed his wife, Dr. Krystyna Goc-Szkutnicka, to the U.S. She was a biochemist working for the University of New York and later on took a job with Roche Diagnostics, which brought the couple to Indianapolis. They’ve now been here 12 years.
“I didn’t think I would show my photography in this way,” he said. He started out inviting people to his home once or twice a year to show them his current photographs. He has since lost his hesitation, because “I like to provoke thought,” he admitted.
A friend of Slawek’s, Dr. Soto Kurylo, once said, “Although I have never learned how to read and write, I paint a picture residing in my mind.” Slawek has adopted this as his motto, and he has traveled the world to tell the stories he finds in his mind’s eye through photographs. The couple travels as often as they can, said Krystyna. Some of the places they’ve been include Australia, Bolivia, Chile, Easter Island, Montreal and Patagonia, among others. Most of the photographs included in his current exhibit, 22

Slawek and his wife have rented a space at the Art Bank, a gallery at 811 Massachusetts Avenue downtown, so he has a regular place to show his work.
Reflections – Way off Theater is an exhibit featuring photographs printed on aluminum. “People are curious about aluminum,” Slawek said. “More and more people are trying to use it. “My wife used to say photographs must be on polished paper,” he smiled. She smiled back and quickly replied: “I don’t think that anymore.” And looking at the finished products – striking photographs of reflections and optical illusions capturing

glimpses of people, buildings, emotions and the passage of time – it’s easy to see why. Slawek calls his photos “draft notes with a camera.” But he is an unobtrusive photographer, most often holding the camera at his waist when snapping shots. In this way, he catches life, “not subjects mugging for the camera,” he said.

hether it is to entertain family and friends, or to find a relaxing spot for some peace and quiet, outdoor living spaces are a great addition to the home.
That’s why a Carmel couple decided to invest in their nest and turn their backyard into a place to grill out and hang out – not just for summertime but, well into the Fall! Anne and her husband, a Carmel police office, officer – looked no further than their neighbor – Rob Delaby of
Shane’s outdoor living and landscapes – to design their outdoor living space. “We have seen a lot of his work and we knew he was the one we would call when it was time to do the back yard,” says Anne. There was only a concrete slab in the backyard which was here when we moved in eight years ago. “It was time for a change.” Delaby says they agreed the Carmel family wanted a large open sitting area, but not a permanent structure or a solid roof. They decided on a paver patio with a pergola to break

it up a little. They also thought a firepit would be a nice addition to the back yard area. “They were really excited about that!” says Delaby. They started the project by clearing the area for the patio, removing the concrete slab and placing a gravel base over the entire area. The pavers were then installed and the firepit was put in. “Firepits are a great addition to outdoor living areas,” says Delaby. “They don’t take up that much room and give off a good amount of heat, so you can enjoy the patio area well into the cooler months. In this case, the Carmel family wanted the firepit, but didn’t want to look out and see stacks of chairs all the time,” said Delaby. “So we added a paver bench on one end, which offers extra seating without extra chairs and gave the patio an overall finished look.” The pergola was added to the opposite end to give the patio a little character and offer little break from the sun.

Delaby says an as outdoor living area, such as the one in Carmel, would cost between ten and fifteen thousand dollars. The options vary greatly from the kind of pavers used to what features are added. You can keep it simple with extra seating area and maybe a firepit, or you could add a full kitchen, a fireplace and even a water feature. Whatever the choice may be, Shane’s Rob Delaby says he believes outdoor living areas are well worth the investment. “They bring years of enjoyment for families and friends, says Delaby. “And dollar for dollar your investment will pay off later when you decide to sell your home in the future.” For now, this Carmel family is not thinking about selling their home, instead they are fired up for Fall!

One of the features on TownePost.com that is most useful to homeowners associations is the “Group” function. With a group for your neighborhood, you can post notices, meeting minutes, polls, and contact pages. Many hoas are getting away from websites since they are difficult to maintain and receive very little traffic.
Once your group is set up, you can assign other members of your group to be “administrators”, add an outside widget or service such as box.net for document management, and send out email notices very easily. To see how another homeowners association is using the Groups function on TownePost. com, visit the GHPOA group (http://townepost. com/group/ghpoa). A recent feature addition is the “+ Add a Page” feature, that allows you to add other pages to your group’s default comment wall page. This is handy for posting agendas, meeting minutes, flyers, or other communications that deserve their own area.

Learning Rx: Train Your Brain for Life Success Story by Marcia Ellett
Lynne McCauley’s fifth-grade son struggled with math most of the school year, despite the fact that he was excelling in advanced classes in his other subjects. She tried to help him. In fact, she said, “We tried everything – studying with him, rewarding him, grounding him, tutors – nothing worked.” Going in to speak with her son’s guidance counselor didn’t yield satisfactory results either. “When I explained the problem to my son’s guidance counselor, and the things we had tried, she asked, ‘Have you ever considered that maybe he’s just average?’ My response was emphatically ‘No.’” 34

As a critical care nurse with a business background, McCauley felt that her son’s problems were rooted in how his brain was handling the information. She was determined to find a solution, a search that would take her five years. “Then I found LearningRx,” she said. Cognitive testing quickly pinpointed the underlying cause of her son’s math struggles, as well as an answer for overcoming them. LearningRx isn’t a tutoring center; it’s a cognitive skills training center. “There are really two parts to smart,” explained McCauley, “the knowledge part of smart – the facts and information that we learn at school or on the job – and intelligence, the underlying cognitive, or brain, skills that we are born with that allow us to be able to learn.” She likens cognitive training to physical therapy for the brain. That means strengthening the specific cognitive skills associated with fast, efficient learning, including:

• Attention • Processing Speed • Working Memory • Auditory Processing • Visual Processing • Logic & Reasoning • Long-term Memory
A vast array of research studies point to the critical role of cognitive skills in learning. In fact, in nearly 80 percent of students, common learning struggles or failures are directly connected to specific weak brain skills. “Poor teaching or instructional issues only account for about 10 percent of learning problems. Unfortunately, that is usually where blame is laid first,” McCauley noted. Traditional tutoring focuses on the symptoms of learning problems. Cognitive training focuses on the underlying cause. “Tutoring or reteaching without understanding why someone is struggling to learn is like pouring water in a bucket with a hole in it,” said McCauley. “Until you address the cause and plug the hole, you are wasting time and money, and

frustrating the student even more.” What LearningRx does is identify those cognitive weaknesses and tailor an individualized program to strengthen and fine-tune the brain’s ability to process information. In her son’s case, McCauley said, “Testing showed he had weak visual processing, visual long-term memory, and logic and reasoning skills – the key cognitive skills essential to math learning. As a nurse, the science and methodology behind training the brain for optimal performance made perfect sense to me.” She was so thrilled with having finally identified her son’s issues and a program that could truly help, she bought the franchise and opened LearningRx Indianapolis in the Kroger plaza at 79th and Fall Creek in Geist. Mike Blackwell is a big fan of LearningRx Indianapolis. His son, Jalen, was a first-grade, highfunctioning autistic student with hyperactivity issues who was having considerable difficulty in class and consistently scoring below average on tests. “Jalen’s doctor recommended LearningRx,” Blackwell said. After cognitive testing and meeting with McCauley to review his son’s results, they worked together to customize a training program to address Jalen’s needs. His son went through the ReadRx and ThinkRx programs,
working one-on-one with a trained professional for several hours a week for 24 weeks, a time investment that paid enormous dividends in improved cognitive skills that have served Jalen very well. “Before he went through LearningRx, we had to micromanage him,” Blackwell said. “Then his confidence picked up; he was wanting to do homework without asking lots of questions.” And an interesting fact with AD/ HD Awareness Month coming in September: Blackwell found his son to be so settled through his experience at LearningRx and the skills he gained that he felt comfortable taking Jalen off Ritalin. “Jalen’s starting the fourth grade this year,” his dad added. “Last year he was on the honor roll.” McCauley says cognitive issues that get in the way of efficient learning “eventually begin to close the door on educational opportunities and career choice. Learning struggles don’t go away when you graduate from high school. Unaddressed, adults carry them in to the workplace.” That, in turn, impacts job opportunities down the road and an individual’s ability to provide for his or her family. These are outcomes no parent wants to visualize for their children, and McCauley believes through LearningRx, “many

MacKenzie River Pizza Co. Brings New Experience for Gourmet Pizza Lovers Story by Reid Duffy
In the early 1990’s, after 17 years with a local advertising firm, Steve Shuel, in the spirit of Horace Greeley’s clarion call of “Go West, young man!” departed Indianapolis for Montana with his young sons John and Michael. He soon partnered with restaurant owner Don MacKenzie to help introduce and promote the concept of “gourmet pizza” to wary and skeptical sausagepepperoni-and-mozzarella-besotted Montana pizza mavens. According
to company lore, it took a while for Montanans to get their tongues and teeth around the idea of such alien toppings as artichokes, toasted pine nuts, pesto, barbecue sauce, spinach, chicken, and mandarin oranges making themselves at home on their pizzas, as emanated from the first MacKenzie River Pizza Co. restaurant Don MacKenzie unveiled in 1993 in downtown Bozeman. But the concept eventually gained traction, allowing the MacKenzie River Pizza Co. to grow to a dozen restaurants throughout Montana over the next two decades, with outposts in Idaho and Washington State. Shuel assumed full command of the operation in 1997, ultimately selling the chain to Montana business titan Bill Foley three years ago. Shuel’s sons came back to Indiana to attend Indiana University where John eventually met his wife and decided to stay in his native home. Through a host of planetary alignment circumstances, John and Michael decided to bring the MacKenzie River pizza experience to Indiana, setting up camp in the far west end of the sprawling Clearwater Springs Shopping Center, off the southwest corner of East 82nd Street and Allisonville Road. Raised in Montana, the Shuels wanted the bar to have a cozy, western feel. Walls throughout are adorned with several photos and memorabilia from the Bozeman, Montana area.

They opened in late May in a 6,270-square feet forum that has seen at least three other restaurant and bar ventures come and go in recent years, two of them with breathtaking speed. A third, the Chicago-based upscale Mexican restaurant, Adobo Grill, elected to move downtown. However, this site is aesthetically in tune with MacKenzie River Pizza’s décor theme of the Montana fly fishing camp, even with no body of water, be it river, lake or stream, in sight. For MacKenzie’s southern and western outdoor deck exposure overlooks a bevy of trees and foliage presumably spared during the

In all, it’s a pleasant forum in which to nibble or wolf down pizza, aided by a gregarious, eager to please staff, with the outdoor deck quite fetching (but vacant on a recent visit), as I and my fellow diners preferred to immerse ourselves in the Great Indoors and its manufactured balmy breezes, wimping out from the Saharan heat gripping our tender Hoosier summer sensibilities. Fortunately, they are applied as an easily extracted garnish and not an essential topping ingredient, but for some twisted reason, cilantro continues its assault on my culinary psyche with its overbearing minty herb wang that seeks to dominate, if not hijack, the flavor of all other ingredients in whatever it infiltrates or hovers over. Based on its ubiquity in so many Asian and Hispanic dishes and cocktails, I guess I am in a distinct minority about the necessity, desirability, and popularity of the ebullient cilantro herb, but I am glad to get this off my digestive tract.

You can launch the proceedings with appetizers of chicken wings, pulled pork nachos, and Mackenzie’s “lodgepole” sourdough square bread sticks, tastily adorned with olive oil, garlic, and melted mozzarella. “Friendships can make people do crazy things,” said Tom Collignon, a Geist resident who is setting out to run the Rio Del Lago 100 Mile Ultra Marathon in California on September 10. Collignon is raising money for prostate cancer research and better treatments in honor of his friend, Steve Haas, who was recently diagnosed. “Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting one in six men,” added Collignon. “Men are 35% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than women are to be diagnosed with breast cancer.”

The “BOWL” game is on and Indianapolis is “SUPER” excited. So is Allison Melangton, president of the 2012 Super Bowl Host Committee. “We never slowed down during the NFL lockout. We’ve been moving full-steam ahead since our bid was accepted in 2008,” said Melangton, a Carmel resident well known for her efficient, imaginative sporting event management talents. As one of only three women to coach a Super Bowl Host Committee, detailed and diligent, Melangton researched past Super Bowls to determine a direction for the Crossroads of America. “The NFL told me, ‘We want what Indy does best. Don’t look at what the others did. Decide what works best for your Super Bowl, and it will be great.’” Taking that responsibility to heart, the quarterback of the Indy Super Bowl Host Committee huddled with colleagues and community leaders to think outside the playbook and create a unique, memorable experience. Now, the pace is kicking up in a sprint to the goal line. Melangton has fielded a winning Host Committee team, executing plays that promote Hoosier hospitality and welcome visitors from all over the world to join in the greatest spectacle in NFL history. More than 25 years ago, Allison moved from Colorado to Indianapolis, sight unseen. Reflecting on her storybook upbringing, with parents Norm and Ellie Cummings and older sister Lynn, the Auburn, Maine native had never been to Indiana and certainly didn’t plan on staying in the Hoosier State. Upon graduating from Colorado State, her game plan was to build a career in sports. “My mentor, Sandy Knapp, who was executive director of the Indianapolis Sports Corporation, invited me to join her in developing a strategy to move a number of sports organizations to Indy,” said Melangton. “At the time, Sandy was one of the few women with a leadership role in the sports industry. She was very influential and enthusiastic about sports tourism. I really liked her, which is why I ended up in Indy.” One of the first groups to unpack was USA Gymnastics, and Melangton, a competitive gymnast from childhood through college at Colorado State, joined the team. She thought Indianapolis sounded like a nice place and was thrilled to be working with Knapp in a city that cared so much about sports.

She started with USA Gymnastics as a spotter, helping television crews find gymnasts. Since then, she has been involved in seven Olympics – Los Angeles, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens and Beijing. “In 1984, they needed people to move to Los Angeles for two months. I was ready to go, moved to LA and that’s where I was introduced to the TV side while working with ABC Sports.”
“I anticipated Indiana was a stop on the way to somewhere else,” said Allison. “But, I met a guy who kept me here.” That guy, Tom Melangton, who grew up in Carmel where they now live with their teenage son, Cameron, cheered from the sidelines as his wife put hundreds of national and international sporting events into play. “We never wanted to keep each other back from our careers,” said Tom. “When Cameron was three and she was gone for a month, I was happy to hold down the fort. It was hard to be apart for that long, but I wanted her to do what she loves.” Sports have played a prominent role throughout Melangton’s life. Her father, who was part of the 1956 Olympic Training Squad and tryout team, participated in the 1960 Eastern Olympic Tryouts and was a guest on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957. “He was a huge influence. I was involved in gymnastics and ski racing, but my favorite sport is definitely gymnastics.” And gymnastics has taken her for a ride on the road to the Olympics, not as a competitor, but as an Emmy Award winning television producer. “The Olympic movement has been a highlight,” said Allison. “It’s a lot of work and long days for long periods of time, but I’ve met great people. Many of us have been together since the 80’s.”
While gymnastics is her favorite routine, as senior vice president of the Indiana Sports Corporation, Melangton put together bids for and administered high-level competitions, from Big Ten and NCAA basketball tournaments to Olympic trials and world championships. According to Melangton, hosting high profile sports is a positive venture for Indiana. “Sports provides exciting volunteer opportunities, positive economic impact, a national and international reputation as a destination for world class events, exposure for Indiana youth, and opportunities for residents to work hand in hand with each other on a project that brings pride to the community.” On Indy’s home turf, the community is center field. The Host Committee has scored extra points implementing Super Service and innovative sideline activities. “We want visitors and viewers around the world to realize the Super

They were chosen as eighth graders and will be seniors when the Super Bowl comes to town,” said Melangton. “I love the Super Scarves program,” said Melangton. “Volunteers all over the country are hand knitting blue and white scarves, complete with their own personal touch. We are the first Super Bowl to have a relationship with a women’s prison. Inmates are sewing patches on the scarves.” Everyone who volunteers to work the Super Bowl receives a commemorative scarf. “Super Cure is our most recent effort,” said Allison. “We teamed up with the Komen Tissue Bank at IU Simon Cancer Center to bring awareness to the center’s need to collect healthy breast tissue for research and their need to raise money for that research.” Traci Runge, Carmel resident and center of Indy’s Super Cure initiative, is on the line of scrimmage in this search to discover a cure for breast cancer. She is the first woman to supply a healthy tissue specimen and then donate cancerous tissue a few years later. Thus, creating a collection that could have major medical implications.
Not only is the Super Bowl a game and a ticket to support the community – it’s a party. “Downtown Indy will be a gathering place,” said Melangton, with obvious enthusiasm. “We received an $8 million federal grant to redo Georgia Street, creating a permanent outdoor festival plaza.” “We’ve got such an awesome team. The NFL has complimented us on our social media strategy and we are challenged to be the most communicative Super Bowl in history.” 2012 will be a year of milestones for Melangton. Not only is she pulling off the biggest sporting extravaganza in the history of Indianapolis sports tourism, she turned 50 in August, her son graduates from Carmel High School and she heads off to London to prepare for the Summer Olympics. What’s in store for Melangton at the close of the 2012 Olympics? “I think I’ll need a vacation.” Stephanie Carlson Curtis is a writer, photographer, triathlete and mom to four kids. Prominent Fishers Orthodontist Goes Distance for Leukemia and Public Officials By Beth Taylor
As millions of people across the United States plan to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11 by participating in a charitable service, one local resident, Dr. Chuck Sadler, is doubling his charitable efforts. The 6th annual Nation’s Triathlon to Benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) will take place on September 11, 2011 in Washington, D.C. The international distance triathlon includes a 1.5K swim in the Potomac River, a 40K bike course through the city, and a 10K run through D.C.’s historical landmarks. “Although I have competed in the Nation’s Triathlon two prior times, when I saw that this year’s race would fall on the ten-year anniversary of 9/11, I felt called to do something that
would highlight and honor the men and women who put their lives on the line every day for our safety in addition to the LLS fund raising that I had done in the past,” says Dr. Sadler. Dr. Chuck’s triathlon training began with a close friend from church, Todd Andritsch, whose son, Luke, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in 2007. The two trained with the LLS Team in Training program and have raised over $40,000 to fund research and education to fight blood cancer. This year, Dr. Chuck’s money raising efforts double in meaning. For every dollar he raises for the LLS, he will match that amount and give the donation to local public safety for special projects that continue to keep our families safe. “Living in Fishers with four children of my own and being an orthodontist of course, I have especially been drawn to many of the educational projects that these two organizations do for our youth here locally,” says Dr. Chuck. “That is the kind of public safety that gets taken for granted by the community and is severely underfunded by our tax dollars.” He continues, “As a Fishers community resident since 1987, I have been privileged to get to know many men and women who keep our community safe. Their dedication to our town and its residents’ safety should be an inspiration to all of us.” Dr. Chuck’s effort to bring public safety back to the forefront is much appreciated by local public safety officials. “When the events of 9/11 happened, we received an outpouring of support from the public, from monetary donations to baked goods,” says deputy police chief, Mitch Thompson. As the years have passed, the support from the community has faded. “Dr. Chuck’s generosity brings public safety back to the forefront,” adds Thompson. “Not very often do we get guys who walk in the door and want to donate. But that’s Chuck. We’re very appreciative of his effort,” says deputy chief of the Fishers Fire Department, Brian Lott. The money raised is needed for special projects that are not funded by tax dollars. Such projects include the D.A.R.E. program, a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches kids how to resist peer pressure and live drug-free Fishers orthodontist Dr. Chuck Sadler is running the Nation’s Triathlon in Washington, D.C. on September 11 to raise funds for Team Luke and local public officials.

The Lost City Under Geist Reservoir Story by Beth Taylor
Boating, kayaking, and sport fishing on scenic Geist Reservoir create fun summer memories, but after 70 years as Indiana’s largest manmade lake, fading from memory is what lies beneath. As Indianapolis grew, so did the need for clean water. Utilities magnate and former Indianapolis Water Company principal owner from 1912 to 1938, Clarence H. Geist, recognized the city’s growth potential and likely water shortage. In the 1920s, Geist began gradually purchasing land in Fall Creek Valley.

However, the land wasn’t vacant. Germantown, the first community in Lawrence Township, was established in 1834. It was a small town, reportedly with one general store, a shoemaker, and a grist mill. The town’s

intention to convert the area around Geist into an exclusive subdivision. After much rangling and debating for nearly twenty years, construction on the first two subdivisions on Geist Reservoir, Masthead and Beamreach, began in 1980.
It is rumored that when the reservoir water is low, a church steeple can be seen – although no record of a church can be found. In 1943, five years after Geist’s death, the reservoir started supplying Indianapolis with water. Through the 1950s, the reservoir was a popular recreational bank fishing spot. Although swimming and motorboats were prohibited, the Indianapolis Sailing Club held races on the reservoir. Just as the creation of the 7 ½ square mile reservoir caused controversy, how to develop the land around the reservoir created even more debate. In 1961, the Indianapolis Water Company announced its

His holdings earned more than $2 million a year. He maintained homes in Pennsylvania and Atlantic City, New Jersey and spent much of his time playing golf at country clubs. Wanting more from the experience, he became a country club developer. His first country club, the exclusive Seaview Country Club in Atlantic City, became the model for other affluent clubs and even hosted President Warren G. Harding in 1922. Geist later developed the Boca Raton Country Club in Florida. With all of Geist’s wealth, he was not known for philanthropy. And it’s unlikely that he gave much thought to the folks of the old Germantown homesteads. Although the demise of Germantown has now retreated to urban legend status, without the creation of Geist Reservoir, the shape of Indianapolis would have been much different. august 2011 |
