Co-writer, co-producer, editor and director, Peter Matsoukas, certainly wore a lot of hats on the set of his recent feature film, “No Place.” Matsoukas’ inspiration for filmmaking stems from a desire to create the worlds he visualizes in his head.
“I try to tell stories truthfully while using techniques of filmmaking that I find to be unique and interesting to me,” Matsoukas says.
“No Place” follows Mac, played by Benjamin Madrid, who feels he has no sense of identity. In this film, Mac needs to deal with his past so he can move on to a healthy and more beneficial future.
“No Place is an antiquated, sort of snarky term for Indianapolis but it’s also a state of mind,” Matsoukas adds.
The film is symbolic of the lead character’s stasis.
“Once I realized that Benjamin Madrid and I could collaborate and that he could be the guy that I could base the entire film around, that’s when the film took off,” he says.
“No Place” was a result of many years of studying and experience. Matsoukas has been making films since college. He began by making low budget films in the early 2000’ while living in New York City. “Micro budgeted features and shorts that not many people saw,” he says. In 2009, Matsoukas moved from New York to Chicago where he attended DePaul University Film School and received his masters in digital cinema. He worked on several projects in Chicago and moved to Indianapolis in 2013. He has been working on both narrative and documentary films while balancing commercial and promotional work, including a film titled “Mr. Not Too Bad” where he ended up meeting many of the cast and crew of “No Place.”
Working with a small budget, Matsoukas, in a sense, reversed engineered the script for “No Place,” knowing the locations he had to work with. The film was shot entirely in Indianapolis and utilized local talent and crew. Filming locations included The Box Media and Production Space, in Riverside and The Burnside Inn on Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Indianapolis. The crew utilized all five levels of the unique Burnside Inn and used several different rooms throughout the building as different locations in the film. The crew even transformed The Box Media and Production Space main studio into a night club.
The film was shot in approximately 15 production days and, aside from Benjamin
Madrid having to be present for all of filming, most of the other actors were able to schedule two or three days to do their parts.

“We were really able to do it in and expeditious and efficient way,” Matsoukas says.
He worked hard to maintain a free and loose set despite some of the stresses that go along with shooting a feature film.
“Honestly, we were really lucky that we did not have any unforeseen things pop up,” Matsoukas says.

He attributes the film’s completion to his entire crew, especially to his co-writer and lead actor Benjamin Madrid.

“Peter wrote the entire thing,” Madrid says. “I added some stuff throughout the process, but writing a whole script is a different ball game. Peter has something I don’t have, Actor Benjamin Madrid patience.” • Tree Removal, • Garage/Basement/ In addition to being the lead actor, Madrid tapped into some of his commercial Topping & Trimming Attic Cleanout access to the Burnside Inn.
