THE NEW SAT AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHY WAIT ANOTHER Beat theMAKE Fall Rush SUMMER? YOUR & Make your Backyard DREAMS REALITY! DreamsA a Reality

Writer / Janelle Morrison Photographer / JJ Kaplan

The agony of taking the SAT® is a rather distant memory for some. Unfortunately for the Class of 2017, the preparation for the new SAT format may be even more daunting, and how university admissions offices nationwide will value the scores is still rather ambiguous. The College Board announced in March 2014 that it was redesigning the SAT. It released an initial 211-page overview that is a work in progress. The redesigned SAT will place greater emphasis on reasoning, analyzing data and critical thinking. The test will incorporate a “rights-only” scoring in which a student will earn points for correct answers with no penalty for incorrect answers. The current SAT penalizes the student 1/4 point for each incorrect answer. The new SAT will have two math sections, one calculator section and one no-calculator section, and will have an emphasis on evidence-based reading and writing as opposed to the current critical reading, writing, math and essay sections, to name just a few of the format changes.

Kurt Spitler, owner and executive director of the Huntington Center, located in Carmel, is prepping students for the current SAT format for this fall while preparing parents and students for the new SAT that will take effect in March of 2016. “If you are a senior in high school now, the changes in the SAT won’t affect you,” Spitler explained. “If you are a junior in the 2014-2015 school year, the current SAT is available only through January 2016 of your senior year. However, for sophomores, you have three options. You can either prepare to take the current SAT this fall in October, November, December or January; secondly, prepare for the ACT only; or your third option is to be the ‘guinea pig’ and wait to take the new SAT in March. “Now if your child wants to get into the IU Kelley School of Business, a nationally renowned business school, you can go on their website, and it will tell you what GPA, SAT or ACT score you currently need to get direct admittance into their school, though there is nothing on their website that tells you what score you will need with the new SAT.

“A perfect SAT score is currently 2400, and it is going down to 1600, the way that it used to be in 2005. I have contacted many universities and asked if they will still superscore the old SAT and for how long. I have also inquired about what are they planning to do for the new SAT, and the response is yes, they plan to superscore the old SAT, but regarding the new SAT, they ‘don’t know.’”

It is unknown at this point how the universities are going to emphasize or value the new SAT when they are looking at seats available for that coming year. By this July, Spitler and his instructors will have all new curricula to prepare students for the spring SAT and the October PSAT that will both be in administered in the new format.

Currently 95 percent of the schools throughout the U.S. superscore the SAT. They take the best critical reading, math and writing scores from multiple SATs of an individual student and then extract these best scores into one superscore. “They’re not going to be able to superscore the new SAT with the old one,” Spitler emphasized. “They haven’t alerted us

as to when they’re going to stop. Last year, Michigan and Ohio State stopped superscoring because of what was coming up in 2016. How many other Big Ten schools are going to follow?” The instructors at Huntington Learning Center are ahead of the curve and are preparing students for the changes while continuing to prepare the students who are

able to take the old SAT before March. So why is SAT changing? “SAT and ACT are competing organizations,” Spitler said. “The ACT has become more prevalent among students looking at higher education options. Typically what we do when a student comes in to our facility, we will give them a practice SAT test and a practice ACT. The ‘practice’ ACT is a retired real test used and not a Huntington test. “We will compare those two tests on a national basis and see where they are starting out higher. Some students will be about equal, and some will see a huge delta with one test over the other. Both the SAT and ACT are approved by the universities, and 99 percent of them, including Ivy League schools, accept both.” The Huntington system has become a proven method of tutoring and preparation because each program is based upon the individual student. Dr. Raymond and Eileen Huntington in New Jersey founded it in 1977. Spitler purchased the Carmel franchise threeand-a-half years ago from its original owner, and their location has been operating for 11 years. “The Huntington system is amazing, and it’s all in how we do it,” Spitler expressed. “Everything that we do here is individualized, and we focus on each student. We are not a crutch, and we are not here to help a student with their homework. Our purpose is to increase their skill sets. If we increase their skill sets, their confidence is going to go up, and if they are confident, they are going to be more motivated.”

Affairs Roger McMichael says the district will save $1.2 million in energy costs in this school year alone. McMichael refers to Yull as an unsung hero. “Bob has been directly responsible for the success of the program,” McMichael asserts. Yull stepped into the role of Energy Manager in 1995. Former Carmel Clay Superintendent Stephen Tegarden hired Yull to help the school district save energy and cut expenses without impacting student learning. Tegarden initiated a partnership with Cenergistic, formerly known as Energy Education, to develop an energy-saving plan for the district. Cenergistic promised its proposals would save the school district enough money to pay for Cenergistic’s fees and Yull’s salary. Both were accomplished. In fact, Yull contends that the district saved money in every single month since the start of the program.

CARMEL CLAY SCHOOLS ENERGY MANAGER RETIRES BOB YULL’S EFFORTS TURNED THE DISTRICT GREEN AND SAVED MILLIONS Writer / Rebecca Wood . Photographer / JJ Kaplan

On May 1, Carmel Clay Schools Energy Manager and Printing Coordinator Bob Yull retired after 20 years in the position. His name may not be familiar to all, but his energy savings and conservation efforts have touched everyone within the Carmel Clay Schools. Under Yull’s leadership, the district’s green initiatives have saved money and improved its environmental impact. Those actions

have earned the school district numerous awards and accolades. In the two decades that Yull served as Energy Manager, Carmel Clay Schools avoided over $17 million in energy usage expenses and decreased energy usage by 72 percent. During that same period, greenhouse gas emissions lowered by 50 percent, and water consumption shrunk by 55 percent. Associate Superintendent for Business

Yull spent four years being trained by Cenergistic on ways to save money and reduce energy waste while improving the environment for students. Yull recalls meeting Cenergistic representatives at the schools a few times each week at “ungodly hours” of the day because they didn’t want to meet when students were present. Initially, the school district worked to control the heating and air conditioning system. Cenergistic helped Yull determine the point where temperature could be controlled in relation to the school calendar and student comfort. Carmel Clay Schools now have automated technology for the heating and air conditioning systems at each building. Yull also worked with teachers and staff to encourage turning off lights when students left the room. Staff was also advised to turn off computers before exiting the buildings for the night. “The amount of electricity saved on one computer is not much, but when you add the thousands of computers together, it adds up to a lot of unneeded use,” Yull asserts.

atCarmel.com / JUNE 2015 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 13

“It’s the same thing with the lights.” Yull says his Energy Manager position slid into the role of Green Manager too. Under Yull’s leadership, the school district has implemented other green initiatives. All schools participate in the recycling program. It’s a single stream system that does not require recyclables to be separated and is less expensive than trash. Student groups have become involved in the recycling too. Custodial cleaning supplies have been replaced with green products.

The school district created a community garden located behind Carmel Middle School. The organic garden is cut into 100 4 x 15 plots that can be purchased for $10 by those within the community. Currently there is a waiting list to purchase a plot. Carmel Clay Schools has a Green Team composed of Carmel Clay parents who volunteer to help with the district’s green initiatives and oversee the garden. Most Carmel schools have green clubs. “Everyone in Carmel has been enthusiastic

and supportive,” says Yull. “Without their support of the programs, we would not be successful.” Yull’s efforts have earned the district many prestigious awards. In 2014, Carmel High School was one of 48 schools across the nation to be honored by the U.S. Department of Education with the Green Ribbon Schools award. Yull said the Secretary of Education only mentioned three schools in the speech, and Carmel High School was specifically recognized for the district’s green efforts.

“We were surprised and proud of that,” Yull says. “The award meant a lot. It tells us we are on the right track and doing the right thing for our students and the environment. It’s an acknowledgement of that.” In 2013, the district earned Cenergistic’s Energy Lighthouse Award. The school district has also received Green awards from the Carmel Chamber of Commerce in 2010. Kim Barrett, Principal at Smoky Row Elementary School, says, “Every recognition that our school system has been awarded for energy efficiency has been due to Bob’s all-encompassing visionary objectives.” Barrett considers Yull’s energy management and conservation without equal. “It has been a privilege to learn from him and assist him in his efforts.” Yull has spent the last 43 years in the Carmel Clay Schools. He served as the industrial technology teacher at Carmel High School for 35 of those years. In 1995, Yull took on the additional position of Energy Manager for the school district. Yull says he hates to leave, but it’s time. “I’m proud of our efforts; they are not mine but ours,” Yull says. “Everyone in Carmel has been enthusiastic, supportive and great to work with. I don’t put it on myself. It is the students and staff that have helped with the programs and helped with the environment. Without their support, the program would not be successful. They make it work.”

PLACING VALUE ON PUBLIC EDUCATION: THE LEGISLATURE HAS SPOKEN “We continue to look for a more sustainable fix from the legislators,” Dr. Wahl explained. “While this is a positive movement forward, it is not a sustainable fix. The new formula does not diminish the need for our local referendum. If you want to maintain a high level of student programs in Indiana, which our community expects and we deliver, then you are going to be in referendum mode to maintain that. The funding formula does not allow us to deliver the expected programs that our community demands, expects and should have.” When the legislators first overhauled the funding mechanism, it changed the reliance on a revenue source. “The most stable revenue source that we’ve had for education in the U.S. has been property tax,” Dr. Wahl stated. “That has now been shifted and creates the question of ‘Where is the money going?’ “The money going out of the general fund to nonpublic schools is quantifiable. I think that it is a matter of a value statement, ‘Do we still value our public education?’ One can look at that in a number of ways, and one way is to quantify where the money from the general fund is going. There was clearly an increase to charters. To me, this is a matter of whether or not we value public education in Indiana.” Dr. Wahl commended the Carmel community for supporting the referendum in 2010 and for its continued support of the schools. “I feel that our community Writer / Janelle Morrison . Photographer / JJ Kaplan helpful,” said Dr. Nicholas Wahl, superintendent understands the challenges that we face and understands that they want to keep the of the Carmel Clay Schools (CCS). “The program level where it is. The value for public After months of media blitzes, coalition challenge that we face is that it doesn’t remove education is alive and well in Carmel. By forums and meetings with educators our long-term need for a referendum in passing the 2010 referendum, it insulated at the Statehouse, the Indiana House 2017 to maintain our current level of student our community from the cutbacks in of Representatives and Indiana Senate programming. It brings our Average Daily deliberated and passed the updated version of Membership (ADM) per pupil funding dollars programming and teachers. the school funding formula. So how does this up to where we were seven years ago.” “We have been very fortunate. We have revised formula affect our local school district families that have worked very hard for and the quality of our children’s education? CCS will still need the local referendum in order to maintain the school district’s current their individual success. That is not in direct correlation to how we are being funded as “The shift in funding at the foundation level was level of student programming. 18 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JUNE 2015 / atCarmel.com

a public school. There is no correlative effect between the affluence of a community and the funding formula. In fact, CCS is one of the lowest funded districts in the state. “A formula for success in Carmel and the strongest way to keep the value of homes in Carmel is with a strong school system. We intend to continue to provide those strong schools and programs. It is a value for anyone with children in the schools. It is a value to those who do not because it is going to maintain and increase their property values. “The amenities that we have in Carmel with our schools, parks and pathways as well as accessibility to retail shops, restaurants and jobs is exceptional for our residents, and to maintain that, we need to have high performing public schools.” On a shoe-string budget, the Carmel Clay Schools will continue to focus on maintaining their current programs and identifying the needs of their students amidst a shift in their demographics. For example, the increase in English as a New Language (ENL) students will affect the programmatic needs. They are concentrating on meeting the needs of those students and providing the necessary resources at the same high level as they provide for all of their programming. “We are going to continue to evolve our programming to meet the needs of our students. We are concluding our strategic planning process and will provide a report on our longrange strategic initiatives to meet the challenges going forward. “The funding formula issue is clearly not solved. When the legislators meet again for the next session, the conversation needs to begin with asking where our representatives place their value on our state’s public education.”

Roller Derby Doc Writer / Ray Compton Photographer / JJ Kaplan

Before discussing the world of jammers, hip whips, snowplows and other descriptions from the world of roller derby, let’s play the game of Fact or Fiction as we peruse the dual life of Bree Simmons of the Circle City Derby Girls. Fiction: Unlike her roller derby name of Killer Purple, there doesn’t appear to be an evil bone inside the tiny 120-pound Simmons. Indeed, it could be argued that this mild-mannered skater would be an unlikely slayer of ants and other insects. Fact: This alleged rough and tumble skater lists cookies and milk among her favored foods. Fiction: In order to scare opposing skaters, Simmons claims that before bouts (not games), she does push-ups on her knuckles, then beats her chest and closes by screaming really loud. During questioning, the skater confesses the knuckle push-up does not really exist and should not be confused as her version of the Maori Hala (the war dance of the Maori tribe in New Zealand). Fact: Her first athletic endeavor was in gymnastics, following 20 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JUNE 2015 / atCarmel.com

“I probably work 50 to 55 hours a week at St.Vincent, but I love roller derby. It is uplifting to become part of a team when you work with people from all different kinds of backgrounds.” the footsteps of her parents, Brent and Celeste Simmons, who both performed at Iowa State. Brent, a native of Columbus, Indiana, participated for two U.S. World Championship teams in 1970 and 1974 and was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2008. Fiction: Bree started roller skating when she was two years old. Not true. Simmons actually didn’t learn to skate until she joined the Derby Girls three years ago. Fact: Simmons isn’t a full-time professional lady of roller derby. Instead, the real career for this 33-year-old is being a full-time doctor with St.Vincent Sports Performance as she services two St.Vincent locations (Carmel and Fishers). When not maintaining her medical skills at St.Vincent Sports Performance, Simmons serves as team doctor for the teams at Guerin Catholic High School in Noblesville. Thus, Simmons’ lifestyle blends wearing a white doctor’s coat in the daytime and a Derby Girls uniform #83 at night and on weekends. “It’s a full schedule,” admitted Simmons before a May bout (that means game in roller derby chatter) at the Forum of Fishers. “I probably work 50 to 55 hours a week at St.Vincent, but I love roller derby. It is uplifting to become part of a team when you work with people from all different kinds of backgrounds.” Indeed, the Derby Girls are a collection of professionals with a wide assortment of careers.

Though their skating names may range from threatening titles such as Ames To Kill, Deadly Dimples and Rowe M. Over, the daytime careers of the skaters include being nurses, teachers, and in Simmons’ case, a medical doctor. Yes, these are the girls next door. Does this grinding dual lifestyle become difficult to execute? “I want to do it as long as it is fun,” said Simmons. “I want to get better and better. But the day after a match, I feel like I have been run over by a truck.” Fortunately, Simmons hasn’t suffered a serious injury, except for a nagging quad strain. However, that wasn’t the case involving a teammate during a practice earlier this season. The skater was

bumped, awkwardly fell to the concrete track and suffered multiple fractures in her ankle. No one shouted, “Is there a doctor in the house?” There was. “You are skating on concrete,” said Simmons, who quickly tended to the fallen mate. “That can be a recipe for disaster. You have to have a minimum of skating skills.” And the Derby Girls jammer has learned that in her tour of duty. After playing volleyball and softball as an adult, she got a taste of roller derby.

Accidents Happen...

Simmons also loves her medical connection to the sport. When not attempting to score points for the Indianapolis team, she has become a medical consultant for the World Flat Track Derby Association at league meetings and championship series. The West Chester (Pennsylvania) University graduate has used her expertise in working on a variety of sports injuries (tendinitis, concussions, stress fractures, etc.) to guide the WFTDA and its expanding number of franchises across the U.S.

But sometimes, you deserve more than apologies.

“Once I saw the game, I knew it was for me,” she said. “When I started, I really didn’t know how to skate, so it took a while for me to compete. But I love it.”

black and white sets. There is much less theatrics, no Hall of Famers such as Big Joan Weston and Josephine “Ma” Bogash, and long gone is the legendary men and women’s matches between the San Francisco Bay Bombers and the Los Angeles T-Birds. There are no fisticuffs or throwing rivals over the railings in flat track skating. In fact, there are no railings in the 2015 version of the sport. But bad feelings can erupt, noted Simmons. “In our home opener, there was a little dirty play by the other team, and I lost my cool a little bit,” recalled Simmons, who is married to One Nate Stand of the Race City Rebels. Thus, we close with another Fact or Fiction on this roller derby performer. Has she ever been challenged by a foe?

CarmelFest Welcomes a New Chairman Writer / Janelle Morrison Photographer / JJ Kaplan

The Rotary Club of Carmel has a new CarmelFest Chairman overseeing one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in the state, attracting approximately 50,000 attendees. Gary Sexton, a Carmel resident and Rotarian, inherited this role from his predecessor, Jeff Worrell, who served as the chairman for three years. This year marks the 27th year of CarmelFest, a two-day Independence Day festival presented by the Rotary Club of Carmel and organized by a legion of volunteers that boasts a remarkable Fourth of July parade, free entertainment on three stages, interactive “KidZone” with rides, games, petting zoo, CarmelFest marketplace and festival food row and many more activities for festival-goers. “I began volunteering for CarmelFest five years ago and worked on the facilities committee,” Sexton said. “The next year, I was put in charge of all of the facilities for CarmelFest and have been working on that committee until recently. I have enjoyed becoming familiar with all of the backend operations of CarmelFest. “Since the nature of the work is crossfunctional, I get to work with vendors, the various city departments and their employees and our guests. I genuinely enjoy the connection with all of the different groups that come together. I especially enjoy working with all of our committee members who work diligently to make this festival happen.” When asked what his reaction to being named the chairman was, Sexton humbly replied, “I was very honored to be asked, atCarmel.com / JUNE 2015 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 29

and knowing that there are so many qualified people with a lot of seniority on our committee, I was a bit surprised that they asked me. I am honored to be in this role and want to contribute to the CarmelFest tradition. I am following in Worrell’s footsteps, and those are very big footsteps.” After much contemplation about what he could do to add to the rich and vibrant CarmelFest tapestry, Sexton brought a district-wide Rotary theme to his committee. The Rotary District 6560, in which the Rotary Club of Carmel is part of, brought attention to the food insecurities within its district this year, and Sexton decided it was the right time to bring a plan to his local club and incorporate a food drive component into the festival. “We are implementing a food drive as part

of the festival beginning this year,” Sexton said. “It is a great opportunity for our community to give back to those in need. It makes sense to have a food drive, opposite of when it is popular during the fall and winter holiday seasons. Facilitating a food drive, mid-year, will assist the area food pantries that may be running a little low this time of year. “It would also target assistance to the children who will be out of school and won’t have access to school lunches. It made sense to utilize our media outlets and resources to generate awareness and collect food around the CarmelFest celebration. Hopefully we, along with our food drive partners, will be able to do a lot of good in 2015 and beyond while celebrating our nation’s independence.” Sexton has garnered the support of local

companies to partner and assist with the logistics, collection and messaging of the CarmelFest Food Drive. The Rotary Club of Carmel announced a unique and historic partnership with Nancy Chance and her organization, The Good Samaritan Network in Hamilton County. Chance and her team of logistic experts will coordinate the collection and distribution of the food donations to the food pantries located throughout Hamilton County. “I see it as a great opportunity to look into resolving food insecurity in Hamilton County,” Sexton said. “Partnerships like this one between the Rotary Club of Carmel and Good Samaritan Network are crucial to any large scale projects because we accomplish so much more together than we ever could individually.” The newly renovated Carmel Kroger store

will host a food donation center inside of its store throughout the week leading up to the festival. Donations can be purchased on-site and deposited at that location beginning Sunday, June 28, through July 4.

“I feel that a ‘thank you’ isn’t enough, but it is the best that I can do at the moment,” Sexton expressed. “Our entire committee is absolutely amazing. Every subcommittee chairperson and their teams continue to grow, expand and improve the CarmelFest experience.

Two other food donation sites will be located on the grounds of CarmelFest on July 3 and 4. They will be marked with “Our parade theme this year is, ‘Stars and wrapped box trucks and strategically located Stripes Forever.’ Each year, the parade at East Gradle Drive and Rangeline as well as West Gradle Drive and Third Avenue SW at the main entrances of the Civic Square. Festival-goers can bring nonperishable food items to any of these locations. “We at Kroger are really committed to assisting with food insecurity relief,” said Karen Hansen, Kroger store manager for Carmel. “Food is what we are all about, and making sure that everybody is fed is really important. For us to be a part of the CarmelFest Food Drive is a great opportunity for us to help others in our community as our community has supported us.”

continues to bring quality and unique entertainment, floats and marching bands from schools throughout central Indiana. There are approximately 90 entries in this year’s parade. “We have sold 18 cabanas, almost doubling the number from last year for the ‘Bang’ experience that was offered for the first time in 2014.

Proven expertise for uncertain markets.

“There are needs and causes within communities that people think about in the moment, but they don’t think about the long-term picture,” said Kroger spokesperson John Elliot. “We [Kroger] have been dealing with hunger relief for 132 years. It won’t be solved with a singular food drive. It is a long-term, multi-generational challenge that we have got to continue working harder and smarter at, and every collaborative partnership that we can develop is needed. Finding a permanent solution to food insecurities is a daunting and large challenge.” In addition to the generous support that has been received by local businesses and his committee members to help kick-off this year’s food drive, Sexton acknowledged the unwavering support that he has received in his first year as the chairman from the numerous community sponsors and most importantly his CarmelFest committee members that work to put on the entire festival and all of its components.

“I would also like to mention that our former chairman, Jeff Worrell, is handling all of our spark buttons this year and is our fireworks director this year. We will coordinate our fireworks display to music and have that broadcast on a local high school radio station. Jeff does a remarkable job promoting the fireworks, and we are thankful for his continued dedication and enthusiasm.” Sexton also thanked his wife, Beth, and their three daughters for their support of his decision to accept the role as chairman. He expressed that they have been incredibly supportive of his volunteerism all of these years and have been involved in volunteering opportunities themselves. When asked what motivated him to make this three year commitment, he simply said, “I enjoy the sense of community that I see unfold every year during CarmelFest. I hope to leave my mark on the city, CarmelFest and on the Rotary Club of Carmel.”

DREAM DREAM ALIVE: ALIVE: DREAMS DREAMS MAKE MAKE LEADERS LEADERS Writer / Janelle Morrison Photographer / JJ Kaplan

On and off of the field, members of the Colts are contributing to the Indiana community in meaningful ways, leaving a long-lasting impression on the local youth. DREAM Alive, founded by Tarik and Maya Glenn, is an Indianapolis-based 501©(3) that exists to equip urban youth in grades 7-12 to become civic-minded leaders. They do this by providing their scholars with three key opportunities: mentoring relationships, character development and experiential learning. The end product is a group of young men and women of integrity and character who are confident, skilled and willing to serve their community. Dwayne Allen, Player Executive for DREAM Alive, has stepped into a leadership role within the organization to assist with Glenn’s mission. Allen, tight end

Bill Bastian, Tarik Glenn and Eric Muller

for the Indianapolis Colts, is making an impact in the lives of Indianapolis at-risk youth. Glenn, like Allen, used his celebrity as a former member of the Indianapolis Colts to influence and mentor the next generation of leaders. Glenn officially became president of DREAM Alive in late 2011 and works tirelessly for DREAM Alive to provide hands-on leadership. “My wife, Maya, and I utilized the platform that I had while I played for the Colts to create DREAM Alive,” Glenn explained. “One of the things that inspired us was that we wanted to give back to the inner-city communities and create something where we could give back together. Support from the local businesses is essential in sustaining organizations like DREAM Alive. Bill and Nancy Bastian, along with Helen Wells, hosted a kick-off event for Dwayne Allen’s DREAM league and announced that the league will feature a season-long competition with unique access to benefits for members that will lead up to their fundraiser, the annual Wishing on Stars benefit on Monday, September 14, 2015 at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Indianapolis. annual event since 2004, Wishing on Stars was first hosted by former Indianapolis Colts Tight End Marcus Pollard. Fellow Colts players, Indiana Pacers, Indy 500 drivers, and other local celebrities are expected to attend the event benefitting DREAM Alive. DREAM Alive and members of its staff used the kick-off as a platform to announce their goals and introduce guests of the event to a few of their scholars who spoke about the opportunities and positive mentoring they have been exposed to as participants of the programs offered through Dream Alive. “We’ve enjoyed working with DREAM Alive and the scholars for several years now,” said Bastian, CEO of Bastian Solutions. “We are an engineering firm, so we will have them learn about 3-D CAD, lasers, robotics, conveyors, etc. It is fun for the kids, and they get to learn new about new things and interact with our engineers who enjoy mentoring the kids. Rick Conner with American Structurepoint has had the scholars at his company to learn about architectural and civil engineering where they learn about building bridges, etc. There is a lot that we can do to engage and impact these youth. These kids are energetic and fun. It is about dreaming, learning and motivating them to keep their dreams alive.” The DREAM Alive organization also recognizes the importance of having positive mentors on board to work with and help raise up their scholars. Henoc Muamba, Indianapolis Colts linebacker and DREAM Alive advocate, spoke about what his involvement means to him. “It is programs like these provided by DREAM Alive that builds and creates the foundation for the communities’ children who are the future,” Muamba emphasized. “Programs like these build a foundation for kids that may not have been taught the values that each individual would need to grow and become the men and women that they were meant and created to become.
