MONON FAMILY DENTAL 1040 E. 86th St. Suite #40A Indianapolis 317-846-6188 mononfamilydental.com

HONORING & CONTINUING A 50-YEAR DENTAL TRADITION NEAR THE MONON

Photographer / Lori Koppold

In December 2013 Dr. Zachary Allmand and Dr. Grant Cleveland were granted the opportunity to purchase the dental practice of Dr. Scott McDonald and Dr. Marvin Schmidt, a practice that dates back some 50 years on Indy’s north side. Having taken care of their patients for such a long time, Drs. McDonald and Schmidt did not want to turn over their patients to just anyone. After carefully evaluating possible successors for nearly a year, they decided that Dr. Allmand and Dr. Cleveland were the right dentists to take over their historic dental practice.

Dr. Cleveland graduated from the I.U. Dental School in 2007 and has been working ever since in a large private group practice where he received years of extensive training, continuing education, and experience in all areas of general dentistry. Dr. Allmand attended IU Dental School on a U.S. Air Force Scholarship. His first year in the Air Force was spent in a year-long intensive residency program The residency program was designed so that CpaAllmand would be proficient to handle a wide array of complex dental procedures and be more self-sufficient while serving in remote areas with limited access to specialty care. This training also made Dr. Allmand a perfect candidate to serve our country deployed as a dentist in

Afghanistan where he routinely performed root canals, extractions, and restorative dentistry for both American and foreign troops. He served our country for five years before entering private practice. As a result of their combined experience, Doctors Allmand and Cleveland plan to expand the services being offered to patients to include oral surgery, root canal therapy and implant placement. While the name of the office has changed to “Monon Family Dental” and some of the doctors treating the patients have changed, many things have stayed the same. The staff who served the office previously are the same, and Dr. Tim Carlson, a full-time instructor at the I.U. Dental School, continues as he has for the past 15 years to practice part-time at the office. Drs. Allmand and Cleveland are breathing new life into the practice. They have updated the technology in the practice, incorporating large digital displays, intraoral cameras and digital x-rays. They feel that these improvements help educate patients on oral health. They plan to continue to implement new technologies, while carefully maintaining the things that made the practice so

successful for so many years. Dr’s Schmidt and McDonald continue to play a large role in the growth and direction of the practice by consulting on treatment plans for complex cases and doing their part to bestow over 80 years of combined dental knowledge to the next generation of clinicians. If you were a patient of Dr. Schmidt or Dr. McDonald, rest assured that you will continue to be in good hands for your dental needs. If you are looking for an experienced dentist on the north side of Indianapolis, give Dr. Cleveland and Dr. Allmand a call today at Monon Family Dental.

$199 New Patient Special (includes a new patient exam, cleaning, x-rays and fluoride). Plus, 10% off of all accepted treatment plans diagnosed at the initial visit or Invisalign consultation that includes x-rays, impressions and digital model consultation.

RANJ PUTHRAN “HELPING HANDS” AWARD RECIPIENT DR. KEN KLOTZ Trinity Free Clinic (TFC) is a free medical, dental and eye clinic that serves the evolving healthcare needs of the uninsured of Hamilton County. Since 2007, Dr. Ken Klotz has served as both volunteer physician and volunteer Medical Director at TFC. In the past six years, Dr. Klotz has logged nearly 300 volunteer hours working directly with patients, and countless volunteer hours devoted to developing TFC best practices and clinic expansion. Under the guidance of Dr. Klotz, TFC has grown from providing limited health services to 500 patients in its inaugural year, into a comprehensive healthcare delivery site that, in 2013 alone, saw more than 4,000 vulnerable patients. Dr. Klotz embodies TFC’s values that neither wealth nor affluence should ever dictate the care given to a person in need. Dr. Klotz’s vision for the clinic includes not only best practices, but fostering an environment where volunteers serve with sensitivity and maintain the dignity of each patient who walks through the door. Congratulations to Dr. Klotz for being this month’s Helping Hands Award winner, and thank you for your commitment to providing medical care to those in need.

CARMEL PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY WELCOMES NEW ASSOCIATE DR. KATIE NICHOLS Writer / Neil Lucas

Dr. Carol McKown and her staff at Carmel Pediatric Dentistry are pleased to announce that Dr. Katherine Nichols has joined the office as an Associate. Like Dr. McKown, Dr. Nichols has specialized training in the practice of pediatric dentistry. After completing her undergraduate degree at Butler and graduating from the IU School of Dentistry, Dr. Nichols completed a two-year residency in pediatric dentistry at the Riley Hospital for Children in 2012. She has been in private practice for the past two years, but has chosen to practice part-time with Carmel Pediatric Dentistry in order to allow Dr. Nichols time for her own growing young family (one child just turned two and she is expecting her second child in November). Dr. Nichols chose to pursue a specialty degree in pediatric dentistry after serving on multiple mission trips while in dental school serving underprivileged children in Mexico. According to Dr. Nichols, “Having hands-on experience on these trips solidified my love of caring for children and improving their oral health. It is important to me to provide a positive experience for children and create a lifelong love of the dentist rather than propagate fear for little ones.” Dr. Nichols knows that, “Teaching children early about the importance of oral health can create a lifetime of healthy habits.” A goal of Dr. Nichols is to see young fearful children blossom into brave kids who look forward to coming to the dentist’s office every six months. The best advice Dr. Nichols has for parents is, “Watch out for the sneaky cavity-producing foods. We all know that candy, soda and juice are bad for teeth, but some products advertise things like ‘no sugar added’, ‘all natural’ and ‘organic,’” which trick parents into thinking they are healthy. She advises to read the labels, as many of these foods contain high amounts of sugar and can have cavity-producing effects.

HOOSIER ‘KARATE EXPERTS’ AUDITION FOR AMERICA’S GOT TALENT Writer / Tom Britt

CommonForm_July_2014.indd 1

6/25/14 1:52 PM

THIS IS MY FRIEND TERRY AND I AM HIS SENSEI

I

t was a Tuesday night after a long Memorial Day weekend and I was watching television, flipping back and forth between America’s Got Talent and a baseball game. Unfortunately, the Dodgers were beating the Reds, so I spent most of my evening watching the “talent show on steroids” premier episode. That’s when a 20-something kid came out and said, “My name is Dustin’s Dojo and I’m a trained black belt and I learned to be a black belt at Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida.” He took a bow with his silent sidekick who was wearing a ski mask “This is my friend Terry and I am his sensei,” he added, followed by a roar of laughter from the audience. Over the course of the next five minutes I witnessed the funniest karate parody I’ve ever seen. Dustin’s Dojo put on a demonstration featuring the breaking of flimsy wood slats, 60 seconds of full-extension punches, and a face full of salt thrown into his eyes by Terry “when he least expected it.” Comedy genius was rewarded with a golden buzzer save by judge Howard Stern, which allowed them to go to the next round in New York this July.

I rewound the skit, watched it with my wife several times, and posted a link of the clip on my Facebook wall the following morning, noting, “This was the hardest I’ve laughed in a long time.”

Then something magical happened. One of my Facebook friends left a comment that Terry Terry was his wife’s cousin from the Indy area. These guys are locals? I had to meet them. So we headed west with a carload of people: our trusty videographer Mitch Jacki, and magazine designers and fans Alyssa Sander and Austin Vance. Our rendezvous spot was in Covington, Indiana at the famous Beef House Restaurant in their back parking lot. From there, Dustin’s Dojo and Terry Terry took us to two of their training locations in Fountain County: The “snake pit” and the “road that leads down to the river.” Dustin’s Dojo, donning his WWE Santino Marella t-shirt, treated us to an on-camera, in-character interview. He told us about his karate inspirations, being bullied in 3rd grade and roundhouse kicking his nemesis in the ear, the ever-presence of attackers and what they would do with the $1 million grand prize should they win America’s Got Talent. “We would build the Roger Baker Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida, Fountain County.” Off camera, Dustin Britton (Dustin’s Dojo) and Ed Kent (Terry Terry) talked about their backgrounds and the events that led up to their premier. They met through their church, where Britton is the youth minister. When they heard that America’s Got Talent

Go online to watch the full interview with Dustin’s Dojo and Terry Terry at TownePost.com

was doing auditions in Indianapolis, they came up with these two characters and fleshed out the skit on the drive over to the Indiana State Fairgrounds. “We were in character all day long,” said Britton. “The producers didn’t know what to think of us. At the end of the day, I broke down and laughed when he questioned my ‘world record’ for full extension punches thrown in 60 seconds. The entire room erupted.” Their act is like watching Napoleon Dynamite trying to understudy Bruce Lee. Dustin’s Dojo speaks loudly, as if you’ll believe him if he says it with pronounced authority. Terry Terry, whose name is a spoof on local horror movie host Sammy Terry, looks around aimlessly, trying to spot attackers. “Only locals would get the Sammy Terry reference,” Kent said with a laugh. With their newfound fame, Britton has created a website at DustinsDojo.com where he posts exercise videos, karate demonstrations and merchandise including a “Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida” t-shirt. As for America’s Got Talent, the two will be making their second-round appearance sometime in July. Be sure to watch on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. for their New York debut.

kay, there may be bigger games on the Indianapolis sports calendar next fall and winter.

Indeed, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots will venture to town in November to play the Colts. Meanwhile, in September, Notre Dame and Purdue will also joust on the turf at Lucas Oil Stadium. And in all likelihood, the NBA will probably not pass on the opportunity to have the Pacers host arch-rival Miami early in the season at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. All will be huge match-ups. All will be big headliners. But for the faithful hockey tribe that calls Central Indiana home, there is another date and showdown that will have special consequences. It is slated for October 17 and the site is the refurbished Coliseum at the State Fairgrounds. You see, not only will this be the home opener for our latest hockey edition—the Indy Fuel—in Indianapolis, but the opposing skaters will offer a familiar enemy for hockey worshippers. Holy high sticking, the Fort Wayne Komets are again coming to town! “We can hardly wait for that night,” admitted Sean Hallett, who co-owns the East Coast League franchise with his father ( Jim) and Indianapolis attorney Jerry Williams. “We want to sell this one out five to ten times over.” And they just might. Early returns in sales, marketing and interest among hockey fans indicate that Indy Fuel may be ready to squeeze its way into the local professional sports setting. “We have lofty goals,” said Jim Hallett. “But we also believe the timing is right.” Hallett may be correct. This lineup both on and off the ice may be ticketed for long-term life.

For instance, there appears to be corporate and individual hunger for the return of professional (paid players) hockey for the first time since 2004. Even though Paul Skjodt of Carmel faithfully put a consistent championship product on the ice as owner of the Indiana Ice junior team (which featured high school players hoping to be

drafted by NHL teams or to become future college players) during the team’s nine-year run, the game’s fan base shrank and most of the 2013-14 home season was played at Pan Am Plaza’s 1,200-seat rink. The Fuel will perform in the East Coast Hockey League, a sprawling 22-team setting that is considered the premier AA professional standing, trailing only the AAA status of American League Hockey. Besides Fort Wayne, potential Indianapolis rivalries could include the Evansville Hitmen, the Cincinnati Cyclones, the Kalamazoo Wings and the Toledo Walleye. Meanwhile, the players are paid from a weekly team salary cap of $12,500. Some may have direct attachments to NHL teams, while others are free agents. Probably the biggest score for the Hallett partnership is the home facility: the iconic Coliseum. The Fairgrounds continue to be annually massaged. But the startling improvement has been the $63 million makeover of the Coliseum, which will be home for concerts, IUPUI basketball and the Fuel. The Coliseum plaza now includes two ice rinks and sparkling new landmarks—including a full-time gift shop, spacious concession stands, ticket offices, open lobbies, and bar/restraurant. The 6,500 seats will provide superb sightlines for hockey.

while Sean was owner of the top Ford Dealership in Canada before he brought wife Tina and their two children to Carmel to oversee the daily operations of the new family hockey franchise. (Tina runs the valuable merchandise business.) However, when it comes to hockey and Indiana, there must always be a note of caution. If history could talk, it would show that Indianapolis hockey has followed a long and winding road, hitting many potholes along the way. Others have tried—and stumbled— when presenting hockey to Hoosiers. While the Indianapolis Indians have been in continuous business since 1902, the Fuel will be the seventh hockey franchise in Indianapolis since a team, the Capitals, dropped the puck in 1939. Besides the Capitals, teams titled Chiefs, Racers, Checkers, Indianapolis Ice and Indiana Ice have chased success with the winter sport. The East Coast Hockey League is still another league to house an Indianapolis franchise. Previous leagues have included the American Hockey League, International Hockey League (twice), Central Hockey League (twice), World Hockey Association and North American Hockey League. And Indianapolis has not been short on offering fans talented players. Those wearing Indianapolis colors have ranged from Wayne Gretzky (Racers) to Richard Brodeur (Checkers) to Dominik Hasek (Ice). All became NHL stars after prepping in Indiana. There has been an array of owners who offered deep pocketbooks in past causes. Included in that group is Jim Hallett, who teamed with auto dealer Gary Pedigo and longtime local sports executive Brad Beery to manage the Ice from 1999-2001. Despite winning a championship, the owners grew weary of playing in the CHL, where the nearest rival (Memphis) was an eighthour bus trip from Indianapolis. “I knew that someday I wanted to get back in the game,” said Hallett, a onetime amateur player in Canada. “But a

lot of factors had to be right. We had to be in the right league and the Coliseum had to be improved.” What may have seemed unlikely once became a reality when Cindy Hoye and officials of the Indiana State Fairgrounds moved forward with a massive project centered on the Coliseum. Everything

but the outside walls came down and the building was closed for almost two years. Hoye also let it be known that she wanted a professional hockey team to come to the building in 2014. After one effort failed to put a franchise in the ECHL for the 201516 campaign, the State Fair connected with Hallett.

10 QUICK SCORES WITH THE NEW FIRST FAMILY OF HOCKEY IN CARMEL Jim TELL US ABOUT YOUR HOCKEY PLAYS? “I played from age 4 to 35. I still skate and plan on playing this coming season in one of the men’s competitive leagues.” DID YOU DROP THE GLOVES AND FIGHT WHEN YOU PLAYED HOCKEY? “I was not a fighter. I played center and was a scorer.” WHAT WERE THE MOST GOALS YOU SCORED IN A GAME? “Our team got 12 once and I had five of those goals.” HOW DID YOU CONVINCE SEAN AND TINA TO MOVE TO CARMEL INSTEAD OF FLORIDA AS THEY HAD SCHEDULED? “I told them it didn’t snow that much here…I was wrong on that one last winter.”

Sean WERE YOU AN ATHLETE GROWING UP IN CANADA? “I played basketball in high school.” WHY DID YOU NOT FOLLOW YOUR DAD’S FOOTSTEPS AND BECOME A HOCKEY PLAYER? “I played a couple of years when I was younger. It probably had something to do wearing all the equipment.” HOW BIG OF AN ADJUSTMENT HAS IT BEEN LIVING IN CARMEL AFTER CALLING TORONTO HOME? “I feel right at home. It was cold last winter!”

Tina DO YOU PLAY SPORTS? “Not unless shopping is a sport!”

The Halletts with writer Ray Compton

After reaching a 25-year deal with his landlord, Hallett went to work on hiring his first employees—Sean and Tina. “We wanted them to move to Carmel,” remembered the senior Hallett. “But I knew I had to find something for them to do.” The younger Hallett will run the business portion of the operation, while a new coach (yet to be announced) will take over the hockey elements. Included on the hockey front is an affiliation with the Chicago Blackhawks, who will provide five or more players for the roster. “We want the Hawks’ input on our hockey operations,” said Jim. On the business side, the Hallett family has listened to advertising agency Caldwell Van Riper and other business leaders on topics such as logo, team colors (crimson and gold) and community projects.

HOW MANY TEAM JERSEYS DO YOU HOPE TO SELL THIS SEASON? “Lots! If everyone who has inquired about a jersey would buy one, I would be very happy.”

“We want to think out of the box,” said Tina, who has a retail background to add experience to the merchandising puzzle. “We want to have the best merchandise in the league. We want our logo to be one that people want to wear.”

SO, WHO GETS THE JERSEY WITH NUMBER 1 ON IT, YOUR FATHER-INLAW OR YOUR HUSBAND? “Definitely, Papa Jim. He’s the Godfather of hockey.”

And the new owners want to have the best game experience in the ECHL. The checkbook will be open when it comes to providing entertainment and excitement to the lineup. “We want people to feel they are

at an NHL game,” said Sean. “That is one of our biggest goals for the year. We want people to come back.” The Hallett Regime has already taken large steps in advancing the franchise to new territory. They personally installed a $1 million LED Ribbon Board in the Coliseum; rebuilt their Fairgrounds offices; pumped up their front office to almost 20 staff members; and will be announcing soon a plan to televise all 36 home games on a local over-the-air channel. They admit they have watched and admired the work of another new franchise— soccer’s Indy Eleven—in the town. “I’ve learned that this cannot be a hobby,” admitted the elder Hallett. “You have to be serious and do everything first class. “I have been motivated by three factors. I want to involve my family. I want the legacy of the franchise to outlive me and I want to give something back to this community. I love this community and I want the Fuel to be an important part of it.” Indy Fuel plans to raise $500,000 for youth hockey programs in Central Indiana. The Halletts also pledge support for women’s causes and other community assets. And, importantly to the old hockey guard, they plan on bringing back the Fort Wayne Komets for a long time.

ANN CONRAD LEAVING CHS ON A HIGH NOTE

28 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JULY 2014 / atCarmel.com

A

fter an incredible tenure of 38 years, Ann Conrad has taken her last bow with her students as a CHS choral director and is moving on to explore new opportunities and experiences. Ann’s passion for music was cultivated at an early age. Her father was a music educator and band director and her mother was a singer. She, like many musicians, began her training on a piano. “My road led me to Ball State,” Ann said. “It was a natural choice for me to become a teacher and a musician.” After graduation she interviewed for several positions but hadn’t found the right fit. She got married and upon returning from her honeymoon, her mother informed her that Carmel High School called and they wanted to meet with her. “Originally the job was for someone with a master’s degree and it had been posted earlier, so I figured it had been filled,” Ann recalled. “I found my way into the office of Dale Graham, the CHS principal at time, and met with the department. It was a lovely conversation and interview.” They recessed for lunch and when Ann

came back, the school offered her the job. She had gone straight from college into what would become an incredible career and eventual retirement from Carmel Clay Schools. “It was the day of the spring concert in May and I remember bringing my new husband,” Ann said. “We sat in the auditorium and I kept thinking, ‘I get to do that and I get to do this.’ I was just so excited.” Over the years the city grew, as did the school system. When Ann started at Carmel there were five choirs and approximately 100 to 120 kids singing. The Ambassadors was the largest group even then. The groups include more than 500 students today. She was a proponent of growing the girls’ ensembles in addition to the mixed groups. “As we grew we went to four grades within the high school and that changed everything we did and how we incorporated freshmen into our program that had been geared to upperclassman,” Ann explained. “Personnel changed, though I’ve always worked with wonderful people. Ron Hellems and I began at Carmel together. He was experienced, creative and dynamic. I learned so much

working side by side with him. He was a master educator and so important to our Performing Arts department and became our chair. He had the vision for incorporating the orchestra and the drama class with music when we first came to Carmel. When he left to pursue other projects, Lamonte Kuskye came in and brought an energy and charisma that attracted kids to our programs. We continued to grow and the community always seemed to embrace what we did. The parents and the general public would attend the Holiday Spectacular and the musicals. When you get people to attend, you feel that you must be doing something right and work to make it better each time.” Ann spoke about the first year the department brought everyone into the Holiday Spectacular program and the amount of dedication it required yet received without hesitation by both students and parents. “The first year that we had everyone involved in the Holiday Spectacular, I remember we wanted to make a costume so everybody would be in the same outfit,” Ann said. “We sewed 83 costumes. We just sewed and sewed with the wonderful mothers who would be there every night and every weekend.”

Since announcing her retirement, Ann has had time to reflect on the impact she had on developing the programs, the relationships she built and what is next on her “to-do” list. “I hope I helped influence taking the Accents choir to a level where they’re known around the state as an outstanding women’s show choir,” she stated. “I took that over the second year I began working there and it’s been one of my babies ever since. I’ve worked with the Ambassadors in every capacity and I’ve always tried to be a proponent for everybody getting involved, including the parents, with all of the performing arts groups and not just the core groups.”

tuxes. We performed Sandy Patty’s “Star Spangled Banner” and I was the soloist. I came out in a blue gown and that was just one of those experiences you don’t forget. The arrangement is so exciting and dramatic and to get that opportunity was amazing for me.”

In recent years, Ann battled challenges of a more personal nature, surviving breast cancer and problems with her voice as a result of a combination of factors. Her students, their parents and her colleagues rallied in support of her during those times. She shared what that support meant to her.

Ann shared that entering the choirs into competitions and exposing the kids to those experiences and training eventually led them to state championships and they would reign for three years as the state champions for both mixed and women’s divisions. “That was pretty special to us,” she recalled proudly. “This past year we did not compete with either group. The Ambassadors went to Europe and performed in London and Paris. They had amazing performance opportunities. I entered the Accents, via a video/audio entry, to the American Choral Directors Association for their four-state conference (IL, OH, IN, MI) and we were accepted to perform. That was a different kind of program than we would typically do for competition. We worked toward making that our big performance opportunity and focused on our presentation and competition-level materials.” Ann says that all of the performances she worked on with her students are special to her, each presenting its own challenges and achievements. “One of the most memorable performances was with the Ambassadors at Clowes Memorial Hall. We did a show and the ending was very patriotic. The girls wore elegant long white gowns and the men were striking in their red atCarmel.com / JULY 2014 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 31

“They were my children,” she said. “I was blessed with beautiful and wonderful children and they were my family. They got me through cancer. The words and letters of support from my kids and their parents were incredible. It has enriched my life. My entire career with CHS has given me an appreciation for the fact that we’re not all superstars, and that’s OK. The quote I put up in the choir room and I hope it stays, says, ‘Use the talents you possess. The woods would be a very silent place if the only birds who sang, sang the best.’ Everybody’s got a voice and beauty and something to offer. Everyone who wants to sing gets to sing and it doesn’t matter if you can or can’t. You get a chance to be a part of that. If I have a legacy, I guess that is what I’d like to leave.”

is working with the young adult program at the Civic Theatre and is working on Footloose. “I will be teaching voice at Performer’s Edge Dance Theatre and keeping myself available to new opportunities. There are always wonderful volunteer opportunities and I would love to work at the Feinstein Archives and volunteer as an usher at the Palladium. My heart is in the Great American Songbook and it’s the music that I’ve taught all along. Somewhere along the way I’d like to be involved with that,” Ann concluded.

Ann hopes to get her voice strong enough to perform again. She once sang with an opera company in addition to performing at the Jazz at the Roof events. She currently

TOM ABERNETHY’S IBA

AN ACADEMY OF BASKETBALL & LIFE LESSONS Writer / Ray Compton

As he prepares for a May afternoon practice at the Indiana Basketball Academy, Eliot Burgett wears a blue jersey top No. 21, a replica of one worn by Indiana Pacers star forward David West.

It is likely, if not a certainty, that this episode of imitation will represent the closest the eight-year-old grade school student will get as a player in the National Basketball Association. Indeed, the upcoming workout is not a drill to fine-tune the skills of budding young NBA superstars. And this limited proximity to professional basketball is just fine with Josh’s mother, who has regularly made dozens of trips in the last three years from her home in northeast Fishers to the basketball/life education center in Carmel.

TOP 10 QUESTIONS FOR FORMER SOUTH BEND ST. JOSEPH PLAYER, INDIANA UNIVERSITY HOOSIER AND LOS ANGELES LAKER, GOLDEN STATE WARRIOR AND INDIANA PACER TOM ABERNETHY YOU HAD MANY THRILLS AS A BASKETBALL PLAYER. WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MOMENT? “Probably when we (St. Joseph) won our sectional. We played at Notre Dame and beat (South Bend) Adams. I had something like 30 points and 20 rebounds. It was a great moment.” CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE FIRST MEETING BETWEEN INDIANA COACH BOB KNIGHT AND YOUR MOTHER? “It was in our living room and my mother grilled him. She was tough on him. They had been recruiting another player and she wanted to make sure that they wanted me. But I wanted to go to IU even if I hadn’t played basketball.” HOW DIFFICULT WAS THE 1975 NCAA TOURNAMENT LOSS (92-90) TO KENTUCKY WHEN STALWART SCOTT MAY SUFFERED A BROKEN ARM DURING THE SEASON? “We weren’t ready for the season to end. Some of us went on vacation to Florida after the season and it was a terrible week.” WHO WAS THE TOUGHEST PLAYER YOU GUARDED? “Adrian Dantley (Notre Dame). He was a bear to guard. His body was so strong and you did everything you could to keep him off the boards.” HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT TRYING ON YOUR “SHORT” BASKETBALL SHORTS FROM YOUR INDIANA PLAYING DAYS? “No, no way. And my shirt probably wouldn’t fit much better.” WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO PLAY WITH KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR DURING YOUR TIME WITH THE LAKERS? “It was great. He was unbelievable. My locker was next to his and I was so impressed with his work ethic. And I learned how to pass him the ball.” DID YOU EVER GUARD LARRY BIRD? DID HE TRASH TALK YOU? “I guarded him a little. He never said that much.” WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN THE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE, INSIDE MOVES, WITH JOHN SAVAGE? “It was filmed when I was with Golden State and there was a scene that was to be at one of our games. They showed me dribbling the ball up court and the announcer saying my name. It was cool.” WHAT WAS YOUR ROLE IN THE MOVIE HOOSIERS? “I was asked to be a technical advisor. I helped with the players and designed a couple of plays. I didn’t design the “picket fence.” WHICH GAME DO YOU PREFER, COLLEGE OR NBA? “I love the NBA. The biggest change has been the athleticism of the players. You can’t imagine a 6-7 power forward.”

34 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JULY 2014 / atCarmel.com

“We love the IBA (Indiana Basketball Academy),” said Cara Burgett. “It teaches the kids more than basketball. They train the kids hard but they also work on self-confidence and other things that kids can take away with them. It doesn’t matter how good someone is. The staff works with every kid the same way.” And those words are exactly what Tom Abernethy has hoped to hear since he opened IBA in 1995. Not all of the approximately 25,000 young players who have attended camps at IBA in the last 19 years have evolved into college or pro basketball performers, but most, if not all, have learned life lessons from Abernethy, chief aide Andrew White, and a battalion of college coaches such as Jim Crews (St. Louis, Evansville and Army) and Todd Lickliter (Marian, Butler and Iowa). Among those teachings is that character counts—for all camp graduates. “Every kid is valuable to us,” said Abernethy, whose basketball resume includes successful stints in high school (South Bend St. Joseph), college (Indiana University), professional (Los Angeles, Golden State and the Pacers) and overseas (Italy). “The kids know we care about them and the parents know we care about their kids. We try to help every kid and especially those who may not have a future in sports. We want to get them ready for the real world.”

Of course, there have been future basketball kingpins who polished their budding skills on the two courts at IBA or at the satellite facilities in Zionsville or Lawrence. Indiana and Park Tudor star Yogi Farrell, Butler guard Kellen Dunham, and current high school standouts Ryan Cline (Carmel) and Derrik Smits (Zionsville) have graduated from Abernethy-led classes. Additionally, numerous other area players–such as Gordon Hayward of Brownsburg–have played in games in the Carmel facility. Abernethy confesses that his camps are probably more designed for the rank-and-file players than those who hope to take the AAU circuit to stardom. “AAU makes a lot of sense for some players,” Abernethy assessed, “and the popularity of AAU basketball has grown. But we are not a tournament venue and our market has expanded. We are coming off our two busiest years.” One of the most hectic time frames in the gymnasiums in Carmel, Zionsville and Lawrence starts in June when summer camps begin. Abernethy and his staff will be buckling up for one-hour lunch shooting camps: “to get your shot fixed”; speed, strength and skill training sessions; shooting practices; and overall extended camp campaign sessions that stretch into three hours.

Not to be forgotten is the availability of a Bible Basics camp, cementing the strong Christian values that radiate from the 60-year-old Abernethy. “God has made this whole thing work for us,” said Abernethy, who left the commercial real estate world in the 1990s to build the IBA. He acknowledges it was a leap of faith–his faith in the Supreme Being–that helped him bridge this chapter of his life. “I wasn’t that nervous about the project—because of my faith,” said Abernethy, whose wife Susie serves as the unofficial Chief Financial Officer. “Things haven’t always gone exactly perfect, but we have had success.” One of the things Abernethy teaches campers is that the challenges of life can present potential turnovers for participants. For him, those times included when his father died when he was 10. A few years later, a brother died. “Tough things happen in life,” Abernethy noted. “We tell our kids that you can’t give up.” The Abernethy family learned their “never give up” mode with twins Matt and Andy. After enduring difficulties off the court in college at Pacific, the pair transferred and are now enjoying successful adult careers. And senior Abernethy’s career marched on despite disappointing basketball setbacks. After his South Bend St. Joseph team (which included another Indiana star, John Laskowski) lost in the sectional during his junior season, Abernethy and St. Joseph came back and won the sectional a March later. Following the stunning upset by Kentucky in the 1975 NCAA tournament, Abernethy and the Hoosiers beat Michigan in

the NCAA championship game to wrap up an unbeaten season in 1976. Eventually, life’s journey took Abernethy to his basketball school on Bauer Drive West in Carmel. And one of his earliest challenges was when he coached a seventh and eighth grade basketball team that included his youngest son, Todd (a future player at Mississippi). Abernethy took his team to a tournament in Florida and played against a team from Ohio. On the Ohio roster was a seventh grader named LeBron James. “I had never heard of LeBron,” admitted Abernethy. “Todd scored a lot of points early, but then LeBron guarded him and shut him down.” But during the rematch the next summer, the Indiana team defeated LeBron & Company, 52-51. “That was fun coaching those kids,” recalled Abernethy. Today Abernethy enjoys that same thrill when he sees an Eliot Burgett take the court, wearing his David West jersey and learning another lesson about life on or off the basketball court. “I always wanted to combine my gifts in basketball with a business setting,” said Abernethy, who has found that parents and their kids are frequently repeat customers. “It’s all about how the kids are treated and how they are taught. There’s no secret to it. If the parents know that their kids are being treated well, they are likely going to be repeat customers.”

A GROWING ONE STOP SHOP FOR SPORTING EVENTS

MAINGATE Writer / Ray Compton. Photographer / JJ Kaplan

Near the homepage of the MainGate website, a page devotes itself to the executive team at the rapidly expanding Indianapolis event retail and merchandising company that stamps its footprint throughout professional sports.

FIRST & 10 WITH CARMEL’S

DAVE MOROKNEK PRESIDENT & CEO OF MAINGATE

YOU MET AND WORKED WITH DAVID STERN BEFORE HE BECAME COMMISSIONER OF THE NBA. DO YOU REMEMBER ANY OF THOSE MEETINGS WITH STERN? “He came into a meeting once, looked at me and said, ‘Why did we hire you?’” YOU HAVE MET ONE-ON-ONE WITH ANOTHER COMMISSIONER, ROGER GOODELL OF THE NFL. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT MEETING? “I met him on the sidelines of a game in Detroit. He told me he was looking forward to working with us at the Super Bowl. I was very impressed.” ONE OF THE REASONS YOU CAME TO INDIANA FOR YOUR MASTER’S DEGREE WAS BECAUSE OF YOUR ADMIRATION OF BOB KNIGHT. HAVE YOU EVER CROSSED PATHS WITH KNIGHT? “I have not met Bob Knight.” WHAT DO YOU DO ON GAME DAYS AT LUCAS OIL STADIUM? “We have a suite, so I am entertaining people. But I also always walk around the stadium and go to Circle Centre to check out our sites.” WHO WILL BE THE HOT SELLERS FOR MAINGATE FROM THE 2014 NFL DRAFT? “(Teddy) Bridgewater is doing okay for the Vikings. Quarterbacks always do well.” WHO WILL BE A TOP SELLER FOR THE COLTS THIS SEASON? THE TEAM WAS DEVOID OF A FIRST-ROUND DRAFT PICK. “I think our biggest opportunity could be with Trent Richardson. It has been a long time since we have had a great running back, and running backs sell.” HOW ABOUT YOUR TWO SONS AND WIFE: WHAT PLAYER JERSEYS DO THEY LIKE TO WEAR? “Both sons are big Luck fans. Max also likes Adrian Peterson (Vikings) and Jack likes Matt Stafford (Lions). My wife wears her Andrew Luck (shirt) more and more.” AND YOU? “I prefer polos. I have a lot of those.” DO YOU THINK THAT SOMEDAY ANDREW LUCK JERSEYS WILL OUTSELL PEYTON MANNING JERSEYS? “Andrew is in the Top 10 now, but it’s going to be hard to beat Peyton in total sales. He has been good for a long time and when he went to Denver his jersey became a whole new seller.” CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR BUSINESS PARTNER AND FAVORITE GOLDEN RETRIEVER, JOEY? “I love Joey. It is great to sit with him for 10-15 minutes at two in the afternoon if I need to relax.”

The biography chapter provides information and job descriptions on several of the top leaders at MainGate. We learn more about the president and CEO; the chief financial officer; the chief sales strategist; the chief merchandising officer; and the senior vice president of event operations. Undoubtedly, each plays an integral part in the mechanics of this multimilliondollar empire that partners with NFL and NBA teams, the Super Bowl, the NCAA and the Susan G. Komen organization. But, alas, one vital member of the MainGate team is missing from the list of executives, despite the fact that he frequently attends meetings in the office of the president and CEO, has full access to the offices on Rockville Road, and quietly consoles his boss and others during challenging times. Say hello to Joey, a three-year-old Golden Retriever who shadows president and CEO Dave Moroknek from the time the two leave their Carmel home in the morning until they return to Hamilton County at the end of another pressurepacked day at the front office.

“Joey is the great equalizer,” noted Moroknek, who sneaks in petting the gentle partner during an interview in his office. “He can lighten the moment and enable you to get your mind off tough situations in the business. Joey can boost your morale when you need it.” Joey was not on board yet when Moroknek, a native New Yorker, started at MainGate as an executive vice president in 2002. But there were other missing components in those days, too. MainGate did not have a business relationship with five NFL teams (Indianapolis, Detroit, Minnesota, Detroit and Tennessee), two NBA teams (Indiana and Houston), and entities such as the United States Golf Association and the Big Ten. Before Joey, the 47-year-old Moroknek and other executives, MainGate flew mostly under the event and merchandising radar, serving the National Hot Rod Association and other smaller partners. But the NHRA provided a solid base with its nationwide events. And a game plan was ready to sprout throughout the sports and event industry. “We saw the opportunity to grow and expand,” remembered Moroknek, who became president and CEO when Tom

Brazil left the company in 2005. “And we have succeeded in that regard. Hopefully, we can gross over $100 million annually in sales and become the premier retail and merchandising company in the country.” Indeed, MainGate, which has more than 300 employees nationwide, has steadily climbed into the brighter lights of big-time sports events. Their multi-facet platforms include event retail (complete with trailers and booths), providing wholesale products with design and printing, and e-commerce campaigns. The e-commerce side has huge potential, notes Moroknek. However, retailing at events has been the foundation for the company. Locally, MainGate sells Colts products at Lucas Oil Stadium and the Colts store at Circle Centre Mall; on Pacers game nights at Bankers Life Fieldhouse; and at racing events at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (where Moroknek labored

for 10 years as the senior director of marketing and consumer products). And it has been the partnerships constructed at such events as the National Western Stock Show at the Texas State Fair, NCAA/Big Ten events and the Super Bowl (started in 2012) that have fueled MainGate and its expanding inventory of trucks, trailers and other necessary tools of the trade. “I never thought we would have 22 large trailers and nine semi-tractor trucks,” admitted Moroknek. But many years ago, Moroknek also never thought he would become a Hoosier and call Carmel home. After graduating from Hartwick College, he looked at a handful of colleges to pursue a master’s degree in sports marketing. One of those schools was Indiana University. “I had never been to the Midwest,” he confessed. “But I liked Bob Knight and I wanted to go to IU.”

After earning his degree in 1990, Moroknek promised his wife that they “would never go back to Indiana.” And it appeared the Morokneks wouldn’t return after he accepted a marketing position with the New Jersey Nets of the NBA. A couple of years later, he joined the NBA league office and participated in building its massive retail and licensing division.

Customized investment portfolios that perform.

Soon, a headhunter offered Moroknek’s name to officials at the IMS, who were gearing up for growth in their merchandising division. The return to Indiana came in 1992. “It was a very exciting opportunity,” recalled Moroknek, who endured the painful split of Indy racing car factions. “It was fun but it was also very challenging to pick up the newspaper and see the negativity of the split.” Eventually, the opportunity arose at MainGate. Moroknek and comrade Bruce Lynch signed on and a pathway to success quickly followed at the westside firm. A key connection came in 2006 when Moroknek and Lynch forged a partnership with the Colts, taking on the retail operations at the new Lucas Oil Stadium. Retail sales at the stadium have soared as MainGate employees utilize the company’s TCE (Total Customer Experience) sales philosophy.

“People don’t come to a Colts game to shop,” Moroknek said. “We don’t sell things they need. We ask them to spend a lot of money and we only have them for about 10 minutes. We know the customer may not be right, but they are the customer. We have

to make it a positive experience for them.” He continued, “We have only had one bad year and that was when Peyton (Manning) was injured. But with Andrew (Luck), sales are on the rise again.” And so, too, are more affiliations with NFL teams. MainGate provides game-day sales for the Vikings, Titans, Redskins and Lions. “Not only have the Colts been a good partner, but they were a launching pad in getting us in front of other NFL teams,” the CEO said. “There is less risk in the NFL. It is so strong.” Moroknek also admits the Super Bowl connection has been positive. The Super Bowl partnership started in 2012 when Lucas Oil Stadium hosted the event. MainGate’s presence continued in New Orleans (2013) and New York (2014) and the Indiana company will be on site in Arizona next February 1. “The Super Bowl has been a good chunk of business for us,” Moroknek said. “It has enabled us to look at different areas.” MainGate has produced apparel for the last three years of the Miss America pageant. As for Moroknek, he recently accepted a personal challenge, consulting with the surging UFC on its merchandising and licensing opportunities. “Our company has unlimited potential,” said Moroknek. “There’s not a company out there that couldn’t use our services in some way.” And, if they are lucky, those future sidekicks may get to spend some time with Joey.

Writer / Ray Compton

Regarding his first trip to southern France as a 19-year-old from Indiana, Carver McGriff remembered the sandy beaches, the ocean waters and the abundance of hedgerows sprouting from the French soil. And he still vividly recalls the chilling sight of a dead American soldier lying on Omaha Beach. “That’s when I knew the war was real,” McGriff remembered 70 years later from his home in Zionsville. “There was no turning back.” Certainly McGriff was not alone in that frightening deduction as he participated firsthand in the world’s largest amphibious military invasion: D-Day in June 1944 at Normandy. Overall, over 850,000 Allied troops landed on the French beachhead in the summer of 1944 to launch the ground assault against Nazi Germany during World War II in Europe. History shows that 11 months later, German zealot Adolph Hitler had committed suicide and the Nazis would surrender after their empire was battered from border to border by the Allied coalition. The Greatest Generation had closed the book on one war. Nowadays, McGriff annually returns to France in a much different setting. Since 2010, he and wife Marianne have accompanied a travel group of 40-50 as part of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Normandy trip. Organizer Bob Zehr is already planning a fifth trip for August 2015. And he already has the 89-year-old McGriff ticketed for the voyage. “While seeing Normandy alone can be inspirational,” said Zehr, owner of the Oak Hill Mansion in Carmel, “many people have said that traveling with Carver has made it a trip of a lifetime. Carver is able to relate both the history of the war and his personal history in such a way that people feel they are actually experiencing much of what happened 70 years ago. Carver creates an opportunity for them to feel a very personal connection.” McGriff, pastor at St. Luke’s for 26 years, has scripted his war story into the book Making Sense of Normandy: A Young Man’s Journey of Faith and War. His personal history included being wounded in his arms and legs during his first month of combat in France, and soon afterward becoming a German prisoner of war for approximately a month. “There are no words to adequately describe the terror of war when you are under machine-gun or artillery fire,” McGriff told the authors of The Memories of Those Who Were There. “You visualize each incoming round, thinking it might hit you…(you) experience the ultimate feelings of fear, isolation and helplessness.” But the American teenager also learned another lesson during his time as a POW. “The German kids were just like us,” he assessed. “They had friends and families waiting for them back home.”

The compassion demonstrated by the enemy soldiers resonates seven decades later for McGriff. “They (the Germans) were good to me,” he said. “I was one of very few Americans held but I was able to bond in a way with the Germans.” The Germans also provided the needed medical care. Now, in some ways, McGriff repays his capturers when he returns to Normandy and visits the nearby cemeteries. He asks his tour partners to pray for both the fallen American and German soldiers at the massive cemeteries (approximately 10,000 graves in the U.S. cemetery and a staggering 30,000 in the German counterpart). “I ask each of them to go into the American cemetery, pick out a cross and then say a prayer for that soldier,” McGriff related. “I tell everyone that it has been a long time since someone has said a prayer for him. But then I also ask them to do the same thing for a German boy. God loves them as much as he does us.” That sharing of emotions has not been lost on his 200 travelmates in the last four years. “Carver is a very patriotic person but he doesn’t take sides on the trip,” said Chuck Sawyer, a retired Eli Lilly executive whose father served in France. “He doesn’t attack the Germans in any way. It’s like God has given him a mission in dealing with the War.”

Zehr noted that McGriff has uncovered a way “for the travelers to share in the deep appreciation and admiration for what that generation was able to accomplish against great odds.” But McGriff slightly alters each episode with his focus and comments. For instance, he shared with others in June that he wanted to find the restaurant in which he was held prisoner by the Germans. He asked for assistance in receiving divine intervention on the message. Eventually he, Marianne and another couple received help from the natives and discovered the site. “He adds to the experience each time he goes,” said Sawyer. “It is not a canned delivery. He always has that twinkle in his eye when he talks.” Sawyer continued by noting, “Carver is an extremely humble man, although to me his is an icon.” In the most recent return to Normandy, McGriff and mates were part of the worldwide 70th anniversary celebration of D-Day. Among the visitors were numerous world leaders, including Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin and Prince Charles, who were part of the festivities at Omaha Beach. The celebration also included honoring the heroes who landed at Utah and Sword Beaches.

A FEW QUESTIONS & ANSWERS WITH CARVER MCGRIFF It was another humbling moment for the onetime soldier who, upon his stateside return, received his college degree from Butler and a religious degree from the Garrett Theology Seminary. “I can’t say a lot about the spiritual meaning of fighting,” McGriff remarked. “But the war helped make me a certain kind of person. I understand what it means to be afraid and to have other emotions. The war and fighting taught me a lot of things about life.”

How touched were you on receiving the French Legion of Honor medal? “Only in the sense that I represent 400,000 young men who died in the war and never came home. I represent those who did not come home and served honorable lives.”

During each return to Normandy, he relives a rerun of that day in June 1944. Is it an emotional journal? “Not in an unpleasant way,” McGriff said. “It is kind of like seeing a movie that I have seen.”

What did you think of the movie, Saving Private Ryan? “From a public relations standpoint, it was a very exciting movie. In the movie it seemed that Omaha Beach was maybe 300 or 400 yards wide—but it was several miles wide (approximately 50 miles from one end to the other.)”

But, recently, there was new footage added to the film. One of Marianne and Carver’s daughters, Sarah, a 1999 graduate of Zionsville High School, moved to Berlin. She married a German and now has two children. The old soldier has now seen the full circle of life and war. He has two German-American grandchildren.

Ray Compton is a former journalist and longtime sports marketing person.

Why do you make the annual pilgrimage to Normandy? “For those boys who died there. They deserve to be remembered today.” What amazes you most about the American soldiers in World War II? “The average age was only 20 ½.” What is it like to go to the cemeteries—American and German— near Normandy where 40,000 soldiers are buried from the two sides? “It is like walking into a church. You whisper. There is kind of a code to be very quiet.” What feelings do you have for the soldiers who returned from Vietnam and did not always receive favorable responses from their home-country citizens? “The Vietnam veterans got a bad rap. The ones who went should have been treated better.” After you were rescued as a prisoner of war, what did you do during the remaining days of World War II? “Because of my injuries, I was classified to limited service only. I went to London and worked in a post office until December 1945.” What did you do after you graduated from Butler? “I had a business, but I was totally lost. That was when I felt I had the call to go into ministry.” What message did you deliver during last month’s Flag Day celebration in Zionsville? “I told the young people that I wanted them to become the greatest generation.” You are approaching your 90th birthday. How many more years will you continue taking the tour to Normandy? “Each year I say it is going to be my last one. But then more people want to go.”

THE PINT ROOM

ONE HUNDRED TAPS & MUCH MORE Writer / Neil Lucas . Photographer / JJ Kaplan

The Pint Room recently opened in the Arts & Design District. It occupies a space at the corner of Main and 1st Street that had remained unoccupied since the District was renovated. As the name suggests, The Pint Room specializes in serving craft beers, but it also offers a menu that is a nice alternative to the normal well-worn bar food in an atmosphere that is as conducive to a casual business lunch as a family dinner. The Pint Room is the second location for restaurateurs Jason Burch, Keith Moreland and Derek Ropkin. Their first location was launched in the Columbus/Dublin, Ohio area nearly a year and a half ago. When asked why they chose downtown Carmel for their second location, Ropkin replied that we saw in downtown Carmel a similar lifestyle and demographic that has made our Ohio location successful.

The Pint Room consists of a spacious bar area that offers more than 100 different taps for craft beer offerings and a large casual dining area. A new beer menu is printed daily based on what’s available from local brewers. Bar Manager Ben Robbins is, for lack of a better term, the “beer sommelier” in charge of making the beer selections as exciting as possible and seeing that the beer is always fresh. Ben has a vast knowledge of the craft beer scene from having worked for local beer distributors for several years. Feel free to stop by and make suggestions to Ben if there is a beer that you think should be included in the selection. With over 100 to choose from, the selection ranges from standards such as Belgians, porters, IPAs and stouts to more exotic brews such as sours, ciders and fruits.

smoked bacon and creamy horseradish slaw. For an interesting and delicious appetizer, try the Bistro Fries, which include strips of Idaho potato that cover a bbq-braised short rib with Ohio cheddar and sour cream, and topped with roasted vegetable relish.

With some questioning the viability of the District, it is great to see a group from outside the Indy area has decided to “tap” its potential by opening such a quality restaurant like the The Pint Room there.

The bar is outfitted with several TVs so you can watch the game as you enjoy the vast selection of beers. If you’re interested in craft brews, watch for future tasting events being held here regularly. The kitchen is supervised by 1999 Carmel High School grad, Executive Chef Ryan Sunderland, who trained at a culinary school in Scottsdale, Arizona, after graduating from Ball State. Chef Sunderland’s experience includes stints at restaurants in Cincinnati and locally at Woody’s Library. While the menu at first glance may look somewhat like a familiar bar menu, Chef Sunderland emphasizes that the ingredients and execution are far from ordinary. For example, the burgers are made from 50 percent Kobe and 50 percent prime chuck beef. They source the freshest local ingredients, including some of their meats from across the street at Joe’s Butcher Shop. It’s not just the quality of the ingredients that makes the difference but also the creativity brought to the menu by their Corporate Executive Chef Ryan Romito. For example, The Pint Room offers a burger called “The Triple” that includes Indy smoked cheddar, boneless short rib, double-

INDIANA’S NEW SECOND CHANCE LAW Writer / Mario Massillamany

We all make mistakes in our youth. Sometimes even as adults. Luckily for us, the Indiana General Assembly just revised the expungement laws (Indiana Code 35-5-5.5 and 35-38-8, 9) to give Hoosiers a second chance. The Legislature understood that old arrests and convictions can prevent you from getting a job, renting an apartment, serving in the military, or participating in service groups. Known as the “Second Chance Law,” the new law allows for sealing arrest records and expunging certain convictions.

SEALING PRIOR ARRESTS

Sometimes a person will get arrested but the charges will be dismissed due to mistaken identity, not committing the crime, or lack of evidence. But those arrests still appear in that person’s record. Under the new law, if you were arrested but never convicted of the crime charged, you can have the arrest sealed one year later. This can be vital for future employment, as the arrest will not appear in a background check, nor would you need to disclose the arrest on a job application.

EXPUNGING YOUR RECORD

If you were convicted of a misdemeanor or Class D Felony that was reduced to a misdemeanor (AMS), you can petition the court for an expungement five years after the conviction. For D Felony convictions that did not result in a bodily injury, the waiting period is eight years from the date of conviction. For more serious felonies, the waiting period will be either eight or ten years and can require written consent from the

If you have multiple convictions that qualify, you must expunge them at the same time. If your convictions occurred in the same county, you can file them under one petition. If they are from multiple counties in Indiana, you must file separately in each county. There are no filing fees for sealing records but there is a $141 state civil filing fee for expunging convictions. You must not have an existing or pending driver’s license suspension or pending charges to get an expungement.

Due to the intricacy of the law and only getting one chance at expungement in the State of Indiana, it is highly recommended that you consult an attorney. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that restores all of your civil rights, including the right to vote and the right to own firearms. Take advantage of the new law to clear those youthful (or adult) indiscretions from your record.

ARTOMOBILIA PREVIEW The 7th Annual Artomobilia, a celebration of automobile art and design, will take over the Arts & Design District on August 23. This event has continually grown to where it is now—one of the largest events held in Carmel with nearly 15,000 expected to attend. According to Event Director John Leonard, this year will not disappoint. What started in 2008 with just 55 cars has grown into an event in which they are expecting more than 400 cars to be on display throughout the Arts & Design District. Although online registration has been ongoing throughout the year, Leonard said they are still accepting registrations for “cool cars.” The primary criterion used to determine whether a car will be accepted is that it must be an “original period-correct car.” If you have a unique car that you think meets this criterion, you are

encouraged to go online to carmelartomobilia.com to register it for the event. To register, you will need to provide three photographs of the car: interior, exterior and engine bay. One of the things that makes the Artomobilia show unique is the breadth of different types of cars you will see on display. Typically, other automobile shows are dedicated to a particular manufacturer or a single period. As a result, at some shows you will see the same Porsche 911 fifteen times. This is not the case at Artomobilia. The cars will be separated into 24 different classes ranging from classics such as Duesenberg, Auburn and Packard to newer supercars like Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche, to muscle cars such as GTOs, Chevelles and Mustangs, and everything in between. Awards will be given in each of the classes.

58 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JULY 2014 / atCarmel.com

Another thing that makes Artomobilia unique is its connection and proximity to the world of art. Several of the art galleries in the District will be featuring, in addition to their usual pieces, works related to the art of the automobile. In particular, the Evan Lurie Gallery will be featuring a specially commissioned painting to commemorate the Artomobilia event. Obviously, an event this large doesn’t just happen without the support and help of the community. So, if you are interested in

helping as a volunteer, John Leonard and the entire Artomobilia staff would greatly appreciate your going to their website and signing up. It will be a great way to spend the day being surrounded by beautiful cars, great art and good food. To register as a volunteer go to carmelartomobilia.com/ volunteer-registration/ To register a car go to carmelartomobilia. com/class-registration/

MISSION COFFEE “Help, Healing and Hope, One Cup at a time.”

Celebrating a decade at the Carmel Farmer’s Market is Mission Coffee, LLC. principal Peter Beering explains that Mission Coffee is a closely held company that imports and resells coffee grown at the Boquete Medical Mission in Northwest Panama. Peter originally set the company up to support the work of his close friends Alan and Debbie Handt, who are retired physicians and residents of Zionsville. Alan was the former Chief Medical Officer at St. Vincent Hospital. Peter went to Panama to see what Alan and Debbie were doing on this coffee farm. He came back and set up the supply chain, licensing, and marketing and began looking for places to sell Mission Coffee. He started with online sales and then began selling bulk coffee at the Carmel Farmer’s Market. A few years later, he began brewing coffee at the market. “We’ve been doing single-source coffee since long before it was fashionable and trendy,” Peter explained. “Our model is deliberately different in that we front-load the contribution to the mission

by buying the coffee at retail from the farm. We spend a lot of time recovering most of our costs and then we help the mission throughout the year by raising additional proceeds. We send medical diagnostic equipment, medicine and money down there so they can continue to work and be healthy. The coffee they produce is often referred to as ‘estate coffee’ because it’s the best of the best coffee. Because of the high quality, we don’t have to work hard to sell it.” What makes the story about Mission Coffee stand out from other farms and resellers of coffee is the path from the coffee’s origin to the end-user’s cup. “What puts it way over the top is the back story,” Peter said. “We literally know every single human being who touches the coffee, with the exception of the baggage handlers with United Airlines who fly it up here as air freight.” For more information about Mission Coffee or to purchase coffee, visit their website at missioncoffee.org.

CARMELFEST EXPANDS & ADDS RADIO DISNEY IN THE “ZONE”

Writer / Janelle Morrison

My husband and I, both Carmel High School alumni, were reflecting on the growth of the CarmelFest program and now 20 years and two children later, I proudly attend with my family the same festival where their father and I shared many 4th of July celebrations together, long before their existence. One major development over the years has been with the KidZone, an area dedicated to entertaining families and children with games, performances, petting zoo and other family-friendly activities. The CarmelFest KidZone Committee is thrilled to announce an addition to their KidZone Family Stage this year. The Radio Disney Indianapolis Road Crew will be on-site on July 4th at the KidZone stage from 7 p.m.–8:30 p.m. and will present games, dancing, prizes and music for the whole family. The committee encourages guests to stop by the stage at 7 p.m. and join the Radio Disney Indianapolis Road Crew for a chance to win great prizes and have a lot of fun. KidZone Committee Chairpersons Tom Blessing and Peter Primason were able to include Radio Disney Indianapolis into their entertainment line-up for the first time in the festival’s history. CarmelFest appeals to a wide demographic and draws in people from all over the state. As they expand their programs specifically geared at families, the committee is optimistic that they will be able to continue to work with organizations such as Radio Disney, who by nature of their programming, appeal to their target market. With the growing popularity of the festival’s North Zone, an area dedicated to attracting festival-goers 21 and older, the addition of Radio Disney Indianapolis was important to maintaining a balanced focus on bringing quality entertainment to families, young children and “tweens.” It sets the stage for further conversations on new concepts and opportunities for future years. It also assists in the promotion of CarmelFest to target markets outside of Hamilton County. In addition to the KidZone, CarmelFest

has an entire schedule of entertainment for Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th. Performers such as country artist Heather Michelle Chapman, My Yellow Rickshaw and the Wright Brothers Band are just a few of the energizing artists on the line-up. Visit the CarmelFest website for an entire schedule of the events and showtimes. This year’s Centier Bank CarmelFest Parade, themed “The Spirit of America,” will be held on Friday, July 4th and will begin at 10:30 a.m. This parade committee named the local pro soccer team, Indy Eleven, as the 2014 Grand Marshal.

skewers, funnel cakes and more. Find a spot to set up camp for the fireworks show and enjoy our nation’s birthday with family and friends at one of the biggest and best July 4th festivals in our state.

Leading up to the fireworks display, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra will perform on the Gazebo stage from 8:30 p.m.–9:45 p.m. Take advantage of the numerous food vendors that line up around the Carmel Fountain and will include a variety of festival favorites from gyros to chicken

f you’re looking for an outdoor alternative to the normal Friday night summer activities, check out Traders Point Creamery’s Dinner on the Deck and the Green Market. For years, this Friday evening event has been a favorite of northsiders who enjoy fresh air and great food in a peaceful, bucolic setting surrounded by a working organic dairy. However, this year the event is getting an upgrade to make the evening even more pleasurable. Every Friday evening this summer, through August, the Traders Point Creamery will have live music playing in front of their beautiful organic garden, the source of many of the herbs and vegetables used to prepare the freshest food around. Before having dinner on the deck, you can do a little grocery shopping at the farmer’s market stands lining the deck area. The garden lawn is filled with the bright oranges, greens and blues

of repurposed wooden pallet furniture with big umbrellas. Guests can lounge on the cushions to enjoy the music with some wine, beer or sangria from the outdoor bar. The bar, too, has gotten a facelift with turquoise wooden pallets to fit the celebratory summer mood. The colors are bright and festive and the food is, as always, fresh, organic and delicious. There is a set menu that changes weekly, according to the availability of farm-fresh ingredients. Dinner prices will also vary a bit through the summer, typically $20-$22 and $10 for kids. Traders Point Creamery’s Friday evenings also offer pony rides for the kids. Don’t forget that Traders Point Creamery every day offers some of the freshest and most delicious ice cream and frozen yogurt at their outside dairy bar. For reservations or information, call 317-733-1700. Traders Point Creamery is located at 9101 Moore Road, Zionsville.
