IN THE SPIRIT OF GIVING GOOD SAMARITAN NETWORK OF HAMILTON COUNTY ASSISTS FAMILIES THROUGH ANNUAL HOLIDAY DISTRIBUTIONS Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by GSN

Each holiday season, families throughout Hamilton County in need of some assistance with procuring food, clothing or toys have the opportunity to turn to Good Samaritan Network (GSN) of Hamilton County, which organizes distribution programs around Thanksgiving and Christmas time.

GSN Founder and Executive Director Nancy Chance says the holiday programs are part of a year-round effort to lift up county residents who’ve fallen on hard times for a variety of reasons. “Through our agencies and pantries we serve about 47,000 clients in Hamilton County throughout the year, which is 18% of our population here,” says Chance, who grew up in Noblesville. “And that’s not just the holiday 6 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atCarmel.com

services we do. That includes temporary services of some kind within our network. In our network, we have car repair, an energy assistance program and cancer funds. Our goal is to catch people before they start spiraling down and things get worse.” Chance unofficially founded GSN back in 1980 after Fishers, Carmel and Noblesville police and firefighters expressed their collective interest in a coordinated effort to

provide for families in need around holiday time. Fifteen years later, the organization was formally founded as a nonprofit and continues to assist thousands of Hamilton County residents year after year. “We’ve tried to be the umbrella organization to coordinate the network of agencies, churches, food pantries and businesses in the county so we can all be more effective and reduce duplication,” Chance says. “All the agencies and pantries work together and have met once a month since 1980.” GSN kicked off its annual holiday assistance events this year with a Thanksgiving giveaway on November 23, which included distribution of food boxes and baskets to Hamilton County residents at the Hamilton County 4H Fairgrounds in Noblesville. The event was followed by meal deliveries on Thanksgiving Day for elderly and disabled individuals throughout the county.

On December 14 GSN continues its volunteer-based work with its Christmas distribution program at the Fairgrounds, which Chance says is the organization’s biggest event and includes toys, food and clothing. “We ran the Christmas distribution all the way through New Year’s Day last year,” she says, adding that the GSN was able to assist 26,978 people through its 2018 holiday distribution efforts. “Basically families sign up and they can be privately sponsored by churches, businesses, clubs and private individuals. Usually, about three-fourths of those who sign up are privately sponsored, and the rest we take care of at the 4H building.” Many factors can prompt individuals and families to seek support — job losses and mental or physical illnesses to name a few — and Chance saw an increase in the need for aid after the financial downturn back in 2008 left many county residents unemployed. Those in need of GSN services or holiday assistance can submit on application online or through the mail. Volunteerism plays a crucial role in GSN operations and, according to Chance, the organization counts on more than 29,000 volunteer hours per year to make its various events and programs run smoothly. “On top of our staff we have 16 volunteers - retirees and business people - that come in at least once or twice a week to do skills work and specialized projects for us,” she adds. “That’s really what’s allowed us to keep up with all of our programming.” GSN works alongside 268 agencies, 43 pantries, 280 churches, 69 schools and five hospitals for its various programming and services, which include food and shelter, financial assistance, education and transportation. Chance says one of her biggest challenges is continually raising awareness of the need for assistance throughout Hamilton County, which she says is an area many Central Indiana residents tend not to associate with underserved individuals and families. 8 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atCarmel.com

“THROUGH OUR AGENCIES AND PANTRIES WE SERVE ABOUT 47,000 CLIENTS IN HAMILTON COUNTY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.” - NANCY CHANCE -

“A lot of people we help are working and sometimes working two or three jobs trying to hold a family together,” she says. “If you’re making $40,000 a year, after taking care of two kids and paying rent, utilities and insurance, that doesn’t leave you with much. We also help people who work here in the county but don’t live here because of the high cost of living. We want to help people to stay stabilized and keep their jobs and have their families stable.” The Good Samaritan Network of Hamilton County is located at 12933 Parkside Drive in Fishers. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, including volunteer and donation details, a frequently-asked-questions page, a Hamilton County food pantry search map and more, visit gsnlive.org or call 317-842-2603.

A CARMEL CHRISTMAS TRADITION THIRD ANNUAL CHRISTKINDLMARKT RETURNS WITH NEW FEATURES Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by Beth Maier

Interested in a bit of cultural enlightenment to go with your holiday celebrations this season? Make your way over to Carmel’s Christkindlmarkt at 10 Center Green. More than 50 vendor booths are scheduled for the five-week event, which features food, drinks, decorations, shopping and activities, all in the spirit of an old-world German Christmas market. “From the start, we’ve tried to create an authentic German experience that our guests can engage with,” says Market Master and CEO Maria Murphy. “We have some new additions and new vendors this year like the Frankenmuth Clock Company out of Michigan, founded by a German immigrant, that does handcrafted cuckoo clocks. There’s a lot here for guests to be part of.”

For the first time since the event began in 2017, Christkindlmarkt (literally translated as “Christ child market”) officials have partnered with the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana German Heritage Society for a sponsored exhibit that highlights the influence German immigrants have had on the Hoosier state and the country.

tree, ornaments, candy canes, gingerbread houses - these all originated in Germany.”

“German immigrants were a large percentage of the founding members of our state, and they’ve had an enormous impact on architecture, education - you name it,” says Murphy, who speaks German and lived in Germany for a year during high school back in 2005 and 2006 upon being awarded a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange scholarship.

Make sure to bring the whole family as there’s something at the market for all ages, with demonstrations, live music, skating sessions available at The Ice at Center Green, and special events. Stop by the Glühwein Pyramid, a 10-ton, 33foot structure with more than 3,000 lights and rotating fan blades, for mulled wines, German beers and additional assorted holiday drinks.

Now in its third year, the event was an instant success back in 2017 with more than 150,000 attendees. Last year, that number grew to more than 320,000, and Murphy hopes the turnout will continue to increase this season.

“The exhibit will talk about those influences, Murphy says several of this year’s as well as the aspects of Christmas that Christkindlmarkt additions and upgrades were spread to the U.S. because of German immigrants,” Murphy says. “The Christmas are of the culinary variety. flammkuchen? Follow your nose to the wood-burning oven onsite where the savory Swiss-German dish will be available. “It’s basically a personal-sized flatbread pizza in the German style, so instead of marinara it’s made with creme fraiche sauce, green onions and chives, and then bacon pieces and a mix of spices,” Murphy explains. “You can see them being put into the oven and see your pizza being made onsite. It is just delicious.” Those sampling the hot chocolate at the market will likely notice a distinct difference in taste from previous years. Murphy worked with Chicago-based Bob’s Belgian Hot Chocolate to bring an authentic flavor to Carmel. “We wanted to make a statement this year with our hot chocolate and upgrade it,” Murphy says. “Bob’s actually pulverizes their imported Belgian chocolate into a fine powder and uses whole milk and a heavy whipping cream. It’s some of the best hot chocolate you’ve ever tasted.” Returning food selections this year include German soft pretzels known as laugenbrezel, and raclette, a Swiss-German dish made with cheese that’s melted and scraped onto a plate with bread and charcuterie. There are a few new activities available for youngsters this year as well - they’ll have the opportunity to stop by the Kinderecke, located between the Pyramid and The Tarkington Theatre, to make ornaments, enjoy coloring sheets and word searches, build and create with seasonal art supplies in a Maker Space, and more. While living it up at the Kinderecke hut, kids can fill out a Kinder Club Passport, which they can get stamped at any vendor that features a passport symbol. Kids that collect five stamps can present their passport at the Guest Services hut for a prize. “This year we think there will be more opportunities for all generations than ever before to experience old-world German traditions and culture,” Murphy says.

A MERRY PRAIRIE HOLIDAY CONNER PRAIRIE’S INAUGURAL EVENT IS THE NEW HOME OF THE REYNOLDS FARM CHRISTMAS LIGHTS Writer / Josh Brown Photography provided by Conner Prairie & Amy Payne

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and Conner Prairie hopes to make this Christmas season even more wonderful for families across Hamilton County. The inaugural “A Merry Prairie Holiday” event officially started on November 29 and will continue through December 31. The new holiday festival has something for

everyone, but perhaps the biggest news of the event is the inclusion of the popular Reynolds Farm Christmas Lights display. Back in July, it was announced that the iconic light display was gifted to Conner Prairie for its new winter experience. “Our Christmas light display was born out my father’s love for Christmas and our community,” said Gary Reynolds, owner and chairman of Reynolds Farm Equipment, in a July statement. atCarmel.com / DECEMBER 2019 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 15

“Transitioning our Christmas lights display to Conner Prairie ensures this tradition of celebrating Christmas with lights continues as part of Conner Prairie’s new A Merry Prairie Holiday festival.” Norman Burns, President and CEO at Conner Prairie, is excited to include the light display and bring a new tradition to Hamilton County. “Winter is always a special time at Conner

Prairie thanks to our 40-year plus tradition of holiday festivities,” Burns says. “This year, it will be even more so as we bring new experiences to the holiday season and carry on a time-honored family tradition by displaying the Reynolds Christmas lights, donated by Gary Reynolds and his family, across the grounds as part of the new A Merry Prairie Holiday Festival.” In the past, it wasn’t uncommon to see cars lined up all the way back onto State Road 37 for the drive-thru light display. This year, the display is set up across Conner Prairie’s grounds for visitors to walk through and experience. “We are incredibly excited to have the Reynolds Christmas lights this year,” says Chris Petrelli, Senior Director of Museum Experiences at Conner Prairie. “They were extremely generous in donating that incredible display. It is a major tradition for everyone in Hamilton County. We are humbled and honored to take the baton and keep this beloved tradition going. We spent

a lot of time running extension cords and placing the lights. People will be able to get a new perspective on the display. It’s going to be great to see the lights spread out across our grounds.” A Merry Prairie Holiday will include much more than just the Reynolds Christmas Lights. The festival is jam-packed with family-friendly events like the North Pole Village — complete with a toy workshop to make holiday gifts, a Polar Bear Plunge dry snow tubing hill, Reindeer Games Midway, Claus’ Cabin, where kids can meet Mrs. Claus and drop their letters off to Santa, and the Kringle’s Carousel ride. Local entertainers and musicians will perform throughout each night on the “Blitzen’s Bandstand,” too. History buffs will appreciate a walk through Prairietown, which includes the 1860s Hoosier Homefront and Soldiers Camp to learn how the season was

celebrated during the time of the Civil War. The classic Conner Prairie by Candlelight favorites, like Dr. Campbell’s Soiree, is included as well as a live reading from Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” with the sounds of Christmas carolers. “The great thing about this festival is we have planned it to be a two-hour experience,” Petrelli says. “Not only do you get to experience the Christmas lights but all of these events, too. It really has a variety of experiences that the entire family will enjoy.” The festival will also include a Winterland Wagon Ride. The ride will take guests across the historic grounds and through thousands of the Christmas lights. “I have an 11-year-old and an 8-year-old, and I’m excited about the wagon ride and the Prairietown experience,” Petrelli adds. “I think the tubing hill and the carousel will also be big crowd-pleasers.”

Unlike the popular Headless Horseman Halloween event, A Merry Prairie Holiday will not have any time ticketed rides or events. Instead, all of the events, like the Winterland Wagon Ride, the Kringle’s Carousel and the Polar Bear Plunge, will all be first come, first served. Petrelli stresses that there shouldn’t be much of a need for families and visitors to show up extremely early before gates open for the event. A Merry Prairie Holiday is an outdoor festival. Even though the colder weather is upon us, Petrelli urges families not to be deterred from visiting, even on some of the more chilly evenings. “Obviously, people should bundle up, but I want to reassure people that we have opportunities for you to stay warm, too,” he says. “Our welcome center, store and more will be open for people to come inside if they get too cold. We will also have several fire pits going and plenty of hotchocolate stands throughout the grounds. So, don’t fear the cold too much.” A Merry Prairie Holiday will be held Friday through Sunday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. Advance tickets are $16 per guest and $8 per member. Tickets purchased at the gate will be $20 per guest or $10 per member. For more information and to purchase advance tickets, visit them online at connerprairie.org. The festival will wrap up on Dec. 31 with a special early fireworks display at 9 p.m. to celebrate the New Year. Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Road in Fishers. FITNESS Lindy Fischer is a busy woman. She’s a wife, mother and owns her own business. Fischer says having a place like Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation’s Monon Community Center (MCC) has given her everything she needs for her workout routine — all under one roof. Great news for a busy woman! “The Monon Community Center and all it has to offer has literally changed my life,” shares Fischer. “I’ve never felt better in my life both from a physical and mental standpoint.” Fischer’s commitment to getting stronger and healthier began when she and her husband Marcus moved back to Westfield just over two years ago. She had just given birth to her third daughter and was searching for a place to get back into shape and lose the 50-plus pounds she had gained during her pregnancy. The family was used to a recreation center atmosphere

and she had heard that the MCC was the perfect place for all of their workout needs. So, she decided to check it out.

“The MCC was exactly the type of place we were looking for that offered group fitness classes, 30-minute express classes, free weight and cardio workout areas, personal trainers, free childcare, and so much more,” says Fischer. Beyond a fabulous place to work out and stay fit, Fischer says the KidZone (childcare area) may have been the biggest selling point to making the MCC their family fitness home. “For me to have the time to work out, I needed a place for my youngest daughter to go. She absolutely loves KidZone MONON COMMUNITY CENTER

and I knew that she was safe and happy and that allowed me to feel comfortable leaving her there while I focused on my workout.” Fischer’s individual workout includes everything from group fitness classes to a new hybrid power lifting program created by her personal trainer. She shares that when she first started working out at the MCC, she had reached a plateau but knew she wanted to incorporate new challenges and goals into her workout routines. And she thinks you should too. “All I can say is ‘do it’ and do it for yourself. It is so convenient. I can take my kids with me and know they are safe, and I’ve never felt better in my entire life,” says Fischer. “It doesn’t matter what shape you are in today, your age or your own personal goals. Take that first step to getting stronger. It’s all in one place just waiting for you.” Monon Community Center 1195 Central Park Dr West Carmel, IN 46032

COATS FOR KIDS HAMILTON COUNTY KIDS COATS PREPARES FAMILIES FOR WINTER Every year, hundreds of families from all over the Hamilton County area come and receive free coats to stay warm for the winter. Hamilton County Kids Coats is responsible for changing kids and their families’ lives and preparing them for the cold Indiana winters.

Methodist Church (CUMC). They saw the need to collect and distribute coats for the children in Hamilton County. There were organizations similar for residents of Marion County, but Hamilton County residents did not have that opportunity. The ladies at CUMC wanted to change that and reach out to their own community. The first year it began, the event was sponsored and run by CUMC and the Good Samaritan Network.

a safe place for families to come and pick up their coats. Many residents signed up for 15-minute appointments online. When they signed up, they had to write down how many children they have, what their genders are and what size coats they wear. Residents and their families were still able to walk in if they were not able to make an appointment. This year, more than 800 families made appointments to receive winter coats.

Kids Coats’ mission is to provide coats and winter clothes to families in the area by partnering with the local community in Hamilton County. Aside from giving away coats, Kids Coats connects these families to community resources, prayer opportunities and churches around the area.

A few years after the organization started, it grew to the point where hundreds of people would stand outside in the cold in November waiting to receive coats. They soon came up with several different host churches in each city for Hamilton County residents to pick up their coats every year.

“I love watching a little kid come walking down the hall proud as can be of the coat he or she just received and seeing the relief on a parent’s face,” Fairfield says. “That is one less thing they have to think about.”

“It’s sharing the warmth of Christ’s love,” says Stephanie Fairfield, president of the board of directors. Hamilton County Kids Coats started in 2004 at the direction of three women from a local church called Carmel United

The partner churches that housed the giveaways this past October and November included CUMC in Carmel, Green Valley In 2018, Kids Coats gave out more than 3,000 new and gently used winter coats and Church of Christ in Noblesville, Saint Louis De Montfort Catholic Church winter wear to children and families. They in Fishers, Arcadia Brethren Church in also gave out more than 2,000 lightweight Arcadia, Sheridan First United Methodist jackets to school kids in need. Church in Sheridan and Epiphany The six giveaway sites do their best to provide Lutheran Church in Westfield. 20 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atCarmel.com

Even though the giveaways ended in November, there is still an opportunity to receive coats. Merciful HELP Center in Carmel keeps a selection of coats on hand until the end of February for those who may have missed the giveaway opportunities. Anything that is left is saved for the warehouse for next year. According to Fairfield, there were additional resources offered at the giveaway locations. Called Opportunity Village, this area of additional resources was made up of organizations and agencies around the area where people can sign up and receive help. Fairfield loves the one-stop-shop idea where residents can receive more than just a coat if they need it.

NEED A BREAK FROM THE HOLIDAYS?

Fairfield’s role as the President of the Board of Directors is entirely on a volunteer basis. As of now, they have an all-volunteer staff who work hard to help their mission succeed. Fairfield leads the board of directors to work through the business side of Kids Coats, making sure the organization is a welloiled machine so those kids can receive the coats and other resources they need. “We are always looking for volunteers at all levels of the organization,” Fairfield says. “Everyone is valuable, needed and so much appreciated.” Those interested can sign up for a place to volunteer on the website. Just about anyone can find a place they can plug in to help year to year. Kids Coats can always use help sorting and distributing at the warehouse, too. If people do not want to volunteer, they can donate coats and other winter wear at two locations yearround: CUMC and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church/ Merciful HELP Center. If you are interested in receiving coats as a Hamilton County resident, interested in becoming a volunteer or simply curious, visit kidscoats.org for more information.

Amber Indian Restaurant has opened a new location in Castleton on 82nd Street in October of this year. Amber Indian is a local Indian eatery including Indian specialties, seafood, Indo-Chinese and many more options to choose from.

Lakhvir Johal is the owner and copartner of both Amber Indian locations, India Palace and Karachi Kabab Grill. Johal operates with three other partners for these businesses. He works for his customers primarily and enjoys hearing their feedback. “[Our customers] are good people and they atCarmel.com / DECEMBER 2019 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 23

always tell us that ‘we love your restaurant,’” Johal says. About 20 years ago, Johal’s father started a similar Indian restaurant in New York. After traveling around the country and promoting the restaurant, Johal decided he wanted a change. After traveling to Indianapolis a few times, he liked the location.

In November of 2016, he opened India Palace Restaurant on Lafayette Road in Indianapolis. This restaurant serves primarily Indian Cuisine. After the success of India Palace, Johal opened the first Amber Indian Restaurant location on October 1, 2018, on Meridian Street in Carmel. Johal is excited about the opening of the new Amber Indian location on 82nd Street. They also bought Karachi Kabab Grill at the end of October, which is also on Lafayette Road in Indianapolis. Two new locations, one in Fishers and one in Greenwood, could also be in the works in the future. Johal travels to every location and looks after his employees and the work they are doing. He assists them with whatever they might need. He also travels to look after his customers to see how they are enjoying the restaurant. Johal encourages people to come and visit the new Amber Indian Restaurant and check out their food and atmosphere.

CLEAR BRA INDY ONE OF THE NATION’S TOP PAINT PROTECTION FILM DEALERS CALLS CARMEL HOME Writer / Mandi Cheesman Photography Provided by PhotoByMeyer

Tucked away in an unassuming building on 3rd Avenue SW in the shadow of all the new development along the Monon Trail sits Clear Bra Indy, a homegrown business that PPF Magazine named one of the nation’s top paint protection film (PPF) dealers this year and last. Recently, the highly skilled craftsmen at Clear Bra Indy were awaiting the arrival of a $1.3M Ferrari scheduled to be delivered into their capable hands thanks to their now nationwide reputation for impeccable work applying PPF, ceramic coatings, window tints and vinyl wraps to just about anything with an engine.

“There are collectors and others from around the country who have their vehicles delivered straight to us after they purchase them,” says Kyle Owen, owner and founder of Clear Bra Indy.

“because of the quality of work we do,” Owen says. “People are willing to pay that transport fee just because they want us to do their work and nobody else.”

“A collector in California bought a car from Graham that we had protected and then called Graham to say it didn’t have any protective film on it,” Owen says. “Graham said to take a closer look, and when he did, he found it.”

So, on any given day, that pristine workshop that could be easily missed sitting among the row of other businesses might have inside its walls one-of-a-kind Ford GTs, Ferraris, Corvettes or any other priceless collector cars. On average, Owen estimates the value of cars that pass through his shop each year to be somewhere around $63M. Last year, Clear Bra Indy saw a 68% increase in its revenue to more than $1.2M, the highest percentage of growth in its industry according to PPF Magazine.

That collector has since sent three of his other vehicles to Carmel from California

But to Owen, his employees remain the real treasures.

Those cars could belong to anyone from a head coach of the Dallas Cowboys to any number of IndyCar drivers, including Graham Rahal.

30 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atCarmel.com

“Many of my employees have been with me for years, and most of them have college degrees in other fields, but they are here because they just love doing this and have a passion for the cars like I do,” he says. After all, you wouldn’t allow just anyone to work on a custom-made Ford GT that can sell on the open market for more than $2M, but Owen’s crew has finished nine of them. “You have to hire the right person in the first place and each person here gets a say in who’s hired,” Owen says, explaining that new recruits spend time with each employee to see whether they are a good fit with the team. “We then find where they fit best and begin their training, and they receive a lot of training.” In 1999, Owen turned his passion for protecting paint into a business when he began applying paint protection film on aircraft. In 2003, he started applying PPF to cars in their owner’s driveways. Today, Owen has nearly 20 employees, and his love of protecting paint is coming full circle. Owen is heading back into people’s homes where he applies ceramic coating to help keep fingerprints, hard water spots, staining and even germs at bay. “You can pretty much ceramic coat and protect just about anything, and we are starting to do more and more in people’s homes, such as stone countertops, stainless steel appliances and glass shower enclosures,” Owen says. “We even have protected a few outdoor kitchens and are testing to see how those hold up.” And, if like Owen, your OCD gets the better of you, you can even coat your shoes to keep those pesky stains at bay. 8 REASONS CHRISTMAS IS THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

Growing up, there were certain things you looked forward to right after Thanksgiving. The radio started playing Christmas songs, lights quickly went up around town, and the hustle and bustle of life started to run at a quicker pace because everyone knew the season was here and the holiday was coming, and fast! But while we all love the holiday season, there are a few things that really help make Christmastime the most wonderful.

1. THE LIGHTS There’s something about driving around on streets lined with lighted trees that transports most to a happy and carefree place! There’s something about the twinkling lights backed by the darkness that makes you feel like you are in a magical wonderland. And if there’s snow, the lights take on an even more magical effect. So, please light up all the things! All lamps, fences, homes, anything and everything! And don’t feel rushed to take them down either.

2. GIVING BACK The holidays are the perfect time to give. People tend to channel their inner Saint Nick and give more generously around this

time of the year. Sock donations are always welcomed and a great way to give to local shelters. There are plenty of kids who might not have a very magical holiday without donations, so look for local children’s centers and groups where you can adopt a child for the holidays by fulfilling their wish list anonymously. Giving doesn’t have to be done in monstrous ways, you can just grab an item off the donation tree at work, buy a preloaded bag of groceries at the store or even buy the coffee for the person behind you in line at your favorite coffee shop! Often times, it’s the littlest things that make the biggest difference. Not only do you feel good doing it, you know you are making someone else’s day too.

3. FRIENDS & FAMILY One of the best parts of the holidays, for most, is seeing our friends and family at times when we aren’t rushed to get from here to there. Taking time out during the holidays to unplug and reconnect makes for the most enjoyable gatherings! While this can be a stressful time of the year, it doesn’t have to be. Put that phone down and enjoy the time you have with your loved ones, unless you are snapping photos of course! Anytime a large (or small) group gets together, it’s a good time. It’s always fun to see that cousin who’s in from California or 32 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atCarmel.com

your great grandmother surrounded by all her grand and great-grandchildren. Holiday get-togethers tend to make for some of the best memories!

4. CHRISTMAS PARTIES Speaking of get-togethers with friends and family, everyone is throwing a party during this time of the year and there’s definitely something for all! It’s amazing the different types of parties you can have these days – gift exchanges, crafting, cookie decorating or end of year work parties are sure to fill out your holiday calendar. And honestly, who doesn’t get a good laugh when the ugly Christmas sweaters come out to play! Just make sure to drink responsibly and have fun.

5. DELICIOUS FOOD Holiday food is all about comfort and we can all use a little bit of comfort food now and again. It is funny how you might look forward to your grandmother’s pecan pie or your mom’s green bean casserole, but there’s also something about the sweets that come along with the holidays that really call you to the table. Pumpkin Pies, Christmas Cakes and all the cookies you can imagine tend to fill dessert tables to the edges and also make you wish you wore your best yoga pants to dinner.

6. PRETTY PRESENTS Gift wrapping has become an art form. Beautifully wrapped packages are extra enticing sitting under the tree. Sometimes the best are brown paper packages tied up with string, but other times the winners are ones with sprigs of fresh greenery and beautiful handmade bows. While you can outsource gift wrapping to the kids running fundraisers at the mall or the shop you purchased at, it is fun to get creative with your wrapping. You can also create your own wrapping paper from drawings and pictures which is great if you want to go for a more personalized look. Either way, if you do it yourself or ask someone for help, pretty packages are something to look forward to each holiday season!

So there you have it. Some of the best reasons that Christmas the most wonderful time of the year. And while it can be the most magical and fun-filled time of the year for most, please know that it can be extra hard for others. So, this holiday season, make it a goal to remember everyone has a story you might not see, to spread love and kindness and remember the reason for the season.

7. HOLIDAY MOVIES Some of the most loved movies out there are those that revolve around a holiday. Who goes through Thanksgiving without watching “A Christmas Story” or the entire month of December without watching “Elf ”? And let’s be honest “Home Alone” is a kid’s favorite year-round. Holiday movies can really get you in the spirit! You might be missing out if you haven’t watched “The Family Stone,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” or “While You Were Sleeping.” Make a list this year and see how many you can check off!

8. FAMILY TRADITIONS Traditions are an awesome way to make memories year after year. It could be volunteering together with friends and family, making ornaments with your kids or decorating gingerbread houses with friends. Whatever you decide to do, make it a tradition. You may already have some like wearing matching pajamas or going ice skating outdoors but there’s definitely nothing wrong with making sure you do something every year around the same time! It takes that normal everyday outing and turns it into something special everyone looks forward to.

hen she was just four years old, Carrington Craig went with her mother to visit her great aunt in the hospital. While they were there, Carrington spotted a child in a wheelchair and she asked her mom, Shelly, if Santa would come down the chimney for the boys and girls at the hospital. Shelly responded, “No, but parents are more

concerned about the gift of health than they are with toys.”

“Yes, but you’ll have to figure out how to do it,” Shelly said.

True as that may be, Carrington couldn’t shake the image of this little boy waking up on Christmas morning in a hospital, without any toys.

The wheels started spinning, and the following week each time a friend called to RSVP to the family’s holiday party, Carrington took the phone from her mom and asked the person on the other end of the line to bring a toy to the party. The night of the shindig, she stood at the front door holding a black garbage to collect the goodies.

“Can we give him some toys?” Carrington asked her mother.

“If someone showed up empty-handed, Carrington sent them to Walmart before she’d let them come inside,” Shelly says with a laugh. That Christmas, Carrington delivered 70 toys to the boy in the hospital, who shared his bounty with the other patients in the pediatric unit. It was such a beautiful memory that the following year when 5-year-old Carrington was caroling with her family, she turned to her mother and asked, “When are we going to start collecting toys for the hospital kids?”

And so it began. Shelly established the Carrington and Friends Foundation, and the Annual Carrington & Friends Toy Drive: Caroling for A Cause at Riley Hospital North was born. Over the past seven years, the toy drive has grown exponentially. Carrington, now 11, and her mother begin collecting toys and donations in October, not just for the little ones but also for teenagers. “We get gift cards to Best Buy, TJ Maxx, or Marshalls for the teens,” Shelly says. “Any leftover cash we receive, we purchase gas cards to give to families, many of whom are not local.” This year, Carrington, who is huge into STEM, created her first Carrington Craig Scholarship Fund in which she plans to raise money to send middle

time of the year. Holly Jolly Village schoolers to space camp who don’t have the funds to go. This year, however, she’s chosen to have her first scholarship proceeds go toward benefiting Orchard Park Elementary School, which is scheduled to close in the next few years. With ideas constantly percolating inside of Carrington’s head, this little girl, with a giving heart, also hopes to secure sponsorship so that they can donate perishable food items three times a month to those who live in less fortunate neighborhoods. The rationale behind that is that most of the time people give food at Thanksgiving but of course people are hungry year-round. “If I can pull it together, we’re going to tackle that next,” Shelly says. “She’s got me running from pillar to post with all of the things going on, but she’s a pretty amazing child that she would have such a heart at such a young age to want to help people so I’m happy to do it.”

During the Carrington & Friends Toy Drive and Caroling event, Carrington and her friends enter Riley’s lobby to sing while the pediatric patients hang over the balcony to listen. They break up the twohour event into manageable segments so

as to not fatigue the patients, starting with a 30-minute set of songs, then providing food and games, then a raffle, followed by another set of singing. This year they’re also bringing a deejay. The event concludes with toy distribution.

Last year they collected 2,200 toys. Every child at Riley North got three toys and the rest were distributed downtown. Carrington felt good when she received a letter from a philanthropy staff member at Riley that said, “For years we worried about children not being able to have toys at Christmas, and now that we have you guys, we’re not concerned at all.” As for Carrington, her motivation for helping is really quite simple. “This is important to me,” she says, “because it makes me happy to give to kids!”
