After an extensive community survey, dealing with ups and downs in the construction industry and much planning, the City of Fishers announced a new $60 million community center. It will be located at 121st Street and Hoosier Road. Much of the facility will be free to everyone, including an indoor walking trail and playground. Other amenities will require a membership, with details coming closer to the opening of the center in 2025.

Murders do not happen often in Fishers, but a Noblesville man faces charges in the shooting death of his ex-wife, Kaylah Ann Farmer. Joshua Farmer, 32, from Noblesville, faces a charge of murder and other counts in connection with the June 28 shooting at a gas station on 116th Street, just west of Allisonville Road.

You may have seen the new mural along 116th Street as you drive eastbound past Municipal Drive in downtown Fishers. The Wilkinson brothers, Corey and Casey, are the artists painting the mural celebrating Fishers, its history and the city of today. However, those same motorists will only have a partial view of the mural soon - a Cafe Patachou will soon be constructed next to the artwork.

The Spark!Fishers festival had the one element needed the most by any summer event - good weather. The concerts, car show and art fair, street fair, parade, and drone show all drew large crowds with the weather largely cooperating.

A high school group, Future Black Leaders,

LarryInFishers

THE LATEST HOMETOWN HAPPENINGS AROUND FISHERS

sponsored the 2023 Fishers Juneteenth celebration. It was the first year the local Juneteenth event was held at Conner Prairie, and the good weather helped in drawing the largest crowd yet for a Fishers Juneteenth. Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth marks the date when the last group of slaves were informed of their freedom at the end of the Civil War.

At the June Fishers City Council meeting, George Kehl was recognized for 45 years of service to the city. Most of that time spanned his years as the Fishers chief of police. Once retired from that job, Kehl then went to work at the Department of Public Works, where he continues employment today. George Kehl is the first person ever to have completed 45 years of service to Fishers.

The bids for construction of a roundabout at 141st Street and State Road 37 have been delayed once again. After state highway officials told local engineers the state would be bidding a number of projects in August of this year, Fishers decided to wait until spring of 2024 to take those bids. Once the project is awarded, city officials say the construction would start in 2024.

HighGround, a subsidiary of Carmelbased Hageman, and Rebar Development, a Fishers-based development firm, are planning projects for parcels along South Street. The Fishers City Council received the details at the June City Council session. Slated for completion in spring of 2026, this will include two projects in downtown Fishers. Housing for those 55 and over, and commercial developments, along with a mixed-use urban village, will be included in the project.

The Hamilton Southeastern Schools board members chose not to give what is normally a routine contract extension to some top district administrators. Those people and positions are: Jimmie Lake, chief operations officer; Katy Dowling, chief financial officer; Nataki Pettigrew, chief equity and inclusion officer; Matt Kegley, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning; and Kim Lippe, assistant superintendent of staff and student services.

HAND Inc. broke ground on its first development in Fishers, Cumberland Cottages, just south of 141st Street on Cumberland Road. Cumberland Cottages will provide 11 housing units on just under two acres of land, with five at market rate and six with rents based on the tenant’s income.

A new “Nuisance Ordinance” became effective August 1 in Fishers. The new measure calls for a commercial operation with seven calls for service, complaints and/or citations in a 90-day period to be issued a warning letter explaining the operation will be required to come in for a meeting with public safety and the health department, if the operation continues to have calls for service, complaints or citations. Also, the commercial enterprise will be required to enter into a remediation agreement to address the reasons why there have been excessive calls, if they reach 10 calls for service, citations or complaints. If the business continues to have calls for service, complaints and/or citations, they could be designated as a “Chronic Violator” and then be subject to a fine of $250 for each call, complaint or citation for a period of six months.

MEET ALISON GATZ

THE NEW FISHERS

MAGAZINE OWNER AND PUBLISHER

Longtime Fishers resident Alison Gatz is Fishers Magazine’s new owner and publisher. Known for her work in the local nonprofit sector, Gatz plans to continue the spirit of giving back in her new endeavor. Day-to-day operations of the magazine will continue as usual, along with an added push to connect the community.

Gatz’s family is originally from Louisville, Kentucky, but later moved across the river where she graduated from New Albany High School. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Ball State University, she ended up staying in central Indiana and moved to Fishers in 2000. From 2016 to 2020 she was executive director of Youth Mentoring Initiative. In 2020 she co-founded Fishers Non-Profit Coalition.

Gatz and her husband, Bryant, realized that it wouldn’t be many years before their children would reach adulthood and leave home. With empty-nest years approaching, she made the decision to step back from her work so she could be more available to her family. Then, her passion for facilitating connections within the Fishers community was engaged when she saw a post on social media that Tom Britt was selling Fishers Magazine.

Britt, CEO and founder of Towne Post Network, Inc., initially began Fishers Magazine and Geist Magazine while developing a franchise model that now

includes sister publications in the Indianapolis, northern Indiana and Kentucky areas. Wanting to devote more time to growing the franchise side of the business, he was ready to relinquish magazine ownership. Towne Post Network is involved in the physical production of the community magazines, but each is owned by an independent publisher responsible for content and advertising. The result is a hyper-local publication geared specifically to the residents of the area. Gatz sensed the opportunity would be another avenue to bring the individuals, organizations and businesses of Fishers together.

“The community aspect of it got me into the conversation,” Gatz says. “I never dreamed one day I would be a magazine publisher, but I thought this might be my next mission. I have lived in Fishers longer than I have lived anywhere else. It is important to me to be part of the community.”

“My vision is to provide inspiring content,” she continues. “I love to tell stories about people doing things that give back to others. One goal is to highlight a local nonprofit each month that is doing really good work. Many organizations don’t have advertising dollars and not many people have heard of them. Featuring them lets readers know their services are available.”

Her duties as publisher of the magazine not only include overseeing content, but also securing advertising. Gatz shares that the two go hand in hand, as high-quality content will ultimately attract advertising that readers will be interested in. This is yet another way to connect and benefit the Fishers community.

“It has been great and exciting so far,” Gatz says. “I’m anxious to get to know our advertisers so we can help them grow their business. It gets me jazzed and gets me up every day if I can contribute to the community.”

SHARPER

SURGERY, SPA & SALT LOUNGE GETS RESULTS Writer / Melissa Gibson Photographer / Amy Payne

Dr. Jaime Harper understands the challenges of juggling a fulltime job, managing a family, and the importance of feeling comfortable in one’s own skin. She embarked on her career in emergency medicine in 2004 before joining her husband, Dr. Stanley Harper, a board-certified plastic surgeon, at SHarper Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She specializes in obesity management and is a master injector of neuromodulators and dermal fillers.

SHarper Plastic Surgery has two convenient locations in Fishers and Avon, offering a comprehensive range of services from injectables to plastic surgery. Dr. Jaime

Harper initially focused on medical weight loss management and gradually expanded her expertise to include neurotoxin and dermal filler injections. Meanwhile, Dr. Stanley Harper specializes in surgical procedures such as breast augmentation, breast reductions, abdominoplasty and blepharoplasty. They also provide a specialized treatment package called the Mommy Makeover, designed to help women regain their pre-baby bodies through procedures like tummy tucks, breast augmentations or lifts, and liposuction.

Plastic surgery has evolved significantly over the years, and Dr. Stanley Harper

has remained at the forefront of these advancements. He has extensive training including eight years of surgical training after completing medical school, which has allowed him to be among the elite board-certified plastic surgeons. He trained in Chicago with masters in the field, and specializes in breast surgeries such as reductions, lifts and augmentation. He is well-known for his tummy tucks and liposuction, and patients from all over the country travel to Indianapolis for his treatments.

Dr. Jaime Harper is a highly skilled master injector who specializes in nonsurgical treatments within the practice. The medical

spa offers a wide range of result-driven facial treatments such as the HydraFacial, and it is the first in the state to perform the highly touted Glo2 Facial. The spa also has the latest in technology, including state-ofthe-art lasers that perform virtually painless laser hair removal, and also address sunspots and broken capillaries. SHarper Surgery also offers the most comprehensive treatment packages for nonsurgical body contouring, which combine Morpheus8, EMSculpt Neo and CoolSculpting.

When considering treatment options, Dr. Jaime Harper emphasizes the importance of choosing a reputable provider. At SHarper Plastic Surgery, all physicians are board certified and highly experienced. Dr. Jaime Harper is the sole RHA dermal filler trainer in Indiana, sharing her expertise with other practices. Their focus on experience and knowledge in plastic surgery sets them apart from other facilities.

The practice stays at the forefront of technology and new treatments. Their cutting-edge technologies such as Morpheus8, Daxxify, and Glo2 Facial have even featured SHarper’s before-andafter photos in national marketing campaigns. However, Dr. Jaime Harper stresses that it’s not the devices that make the difference, but rather the expertise and technique applied by the aesthetic team at SHarper.

In a world where social media bombards us with unrealistic expectations and popular quick fixes, Dr. Jaime Harper reminds patients that it’s possible to achieve their desired results without resorting to extreme measures. Celebrities and influencers heavily promote injectables and sometimes even unusual surgical procedures like buccal fat removal. However, it’s crucial to recognize that social media is targeted and may not necessarily align with individual needs. Dr. Harper believes in employing multiple modalities to achieve results, tailoring treatments such as fillers, Morpheus8, surgery or noninvasive

procedures based on each patient’s unique requirements.

Morpheus8 is a transformative treatment that addresses skin resurfacing, fat remodeling, and tightening. By stimulating

entrenched forehead wrinkles, as it can effectively soften them. Furthermore, microneedling provides collagen production and similar advantages to a surgical facelift. While Botox and fillers offer temporary results, there are longer-lasting options such as Daxxify, lasting up to 24 weeks, while treatments like Morpheus8 and CoolSculpting can provide more permanent outcomes.

Dr. Jaime Harper assures patients that they don’t need to have a clear idea of what they want when they visit the practice. Instead, she focuses on understanding their concerns and guiding them without judgment. Her primary objective is to enhance her patients’ confidence and make it seem as though they never needed her assistance. Most of her patients have realistic expectations, such as desiring natural-looking lip fillers rather than an obvious enhancement. However, she acknowledges that some individuals become aware of changes and seek corrective measures sooner. She prefers to have open conversations with her patients, listening to their concerns and working together to develop a realistic plan of action.

Although walking into a plastic surgery office and discussing insecurities can be intimidating, SHarper Plastic Surgery cultivates a down-to-earth and friendly environment to ensure everyone feels comfortable. Dr. Harper, known for her natural and low-key approach, aims to eliminate judgment and instead focuses on helping patients build confidence and feel good about themselves.

Located at Fishers District on Yard Street in Fishers, and on Rockville Road in Avon, the team welcomes patients to visit their website at sharpersurgery.com to book a complimentary aesthetic or injectable consultation. In 2019 Duane Weber was pulling up to his last hockey match as a coach when he noticed kids in wheelchairs and with prosthetic limbs entering the building. He quickly realized he was witnessing a sled hockey match for children with disabilities.

“I started talking with some of the parents about their child’s involvement,” Weber says. “They started tearing up as they talked about its impact on their son. Then I started tearing up and thinking about ways to bring sled hockey to Indianapolis.”

In April of 2019, Weber created the Indy Steel Sled Hockey program with donated equipment, utilizing his contacts in youth hockey. Sled Hockey is open to children aged 5 to 18 and adults. Weber says they had about five participants the first year, and now four years later, they have grown to about 25 participants.

The game itself is similar to ice hockey in

KEEP IT ON ICE

INDY SLED HOCKEY HAS FOUND RAPID SUCCESS

terms of rules, but differs in the equipment used. Players sit on a metal frame called a sled. Players have two smaller hockey sticks they hold while moving around the ice.

“One thing that makes sled hockey unique is the players use two sticks instead of one,” Weber says. “One end of the stick has metal pricks on it, and they use that to propel themselves around the ice. Then they can flip the stick over to the other end for moving the puck.”

Weber says he is tremendously excited that the competitive team won the Division 1 youth national championship in just four short years. He says what makes it even more remarkable is that they beat out close to 100 other teams.

“The cool thing about sled hockey is these kids want to compete at a high level like their able-bodied counterparts,” Weber says. “The only adaptation is the equipment and

how they utilize it.”

Weber says anyone can come out and try sled hockey for free. There are two levels for both adults and kids - recreational and competitive. He has some participants who enjoy the recreational aspect, and some who eventually want to go on and play for Team USA Paralympic ice hockey. Carmine Brown has played for four seasons and is someone Weber describes as highly driven.

“My mom received their newsletter detailing a hockey event, and she basically made me go,” Brown says. “It was a good thing she did because I loved it and am good at it. I love the physicality of the game and working with my team. I like traveling to the different tournaments and trying to better myself, especially when I see others I can learn from.”

Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI) invests in Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) Schools by providing a high-quality program of adult support and guidance to any student who wishes to participate. Its mission to develop positive relationships between mentors and mentees not only helps students to reach their full potential, but ultimately strengthens the community. With its strong training program and multiple resources, the volunteers who participate as mentors are able to bring the highest levels of encouragement and empathy to each school-based session.

YMI mentoring involves a one-on-one meeting between a carefully matched intermediate, junior high or high school student, and an adult mentor. During each 30- to 60-minute session, nurturing relationships are built. Each conversation is held during regular school hours.

“We always have a need for mentors,” says Brittany Rayburn, executive director. “It’s a way to support youth and our community. We do a good job of making the best match possible.”

YMI maintains a specific onboarding process for mentors. The first step is to fill out an interest form that can be

accessed on the YMI website, followed by an interview with Rayburn. During the one-on-one conversation, the prospective mentor learns about the organization and what is required.

If the adult is a good fit for the program, the process continues when an application is submitted. Each candidate agrees to a $16 Safe Visitor Background Check before an invitation to training is issued. Finally, according to mutual interests, a match is made.

Students go through a similar process before receiving a mentor. They may be recommended for the program by a counselor, teacher, parent or themselves. Second, the parent or legal guardian must provide information by filling out an application. After guardian consent is received, the student completes an application, which is used to make the best match possible.

“A lot of need goes unseen, but besides that, research shows youth benefits from having four to six non-parental adults supporting them through their developmental years,” says Rayburn, regarding why a mentoring program is needed in a high socioeconomic area such as Fishers. “Mentoring is for everyone. Who doesn’t benefit from having a

mentor at all stages of life?”

Feedback from parents and guardians, mentors and students reflects this. When surveyed, 95% of students who participated in the program felt that mentoring had improved their overall social and emotional well-being. Also, 86% stated that mentoring helped them to be more aware of the points of view of others. In addition, 89% said their mentor helped them see their potential to grow and improve.

Donating to YMI is another way to support HSE students and the Fishers community. Support ensures that every student who wants a mentor can have one. There is a donation link on the organization’s website, as well as an option to sign up for the newsletter. Continued backing ensures that every student who wants a mentor can have one.

Visit ymionline.org for more info. Updates can be found on Facebook and Twitter.

YMI is located on the second floor of the Delaware Township Building at 9090 East 131st Street in Fishers. The mailing address is P.O. Box 743, Fishers, IN 46038. Also call 317-350-6045, or email info@ ymionline.org.

NONPROFIT OF THE MONTH

NOW OR NEVER

HOPE MATTHEWS SELLS ALL HER BELONGINGS AND MOVES TO PORTUGAL

Author and inspirational speaker Brené Brown often talks about choosing “courage over comfort.”

Longtime Fishers resident Hope Matthews did just that when she sold her house, car, furniture, and all of her belongings to move to Portugal in September of 2022 on a two-year retirement visa.

After 32 years of working full time as a social worker and parent to five children, she decided to take a sabbatical to discover herself.

“One of my lifelong passions has been traveling internationally and experiencing different cultures,” says Matthews, who studied in France in college and worked in Italy and Germany after graduating. She has also traveled to Haiti and Ecuador to support mission organizations. Nevertheless, the notion of moving to Portugal was both exhilarating and terrifying.

“No matter how many times I questioned if

it was right or wrong, I circled back to the same conclusion - the only failure would be not trying,” Matthews says.

When she was raising her children, she hosted several exchange students. While on sabbatical, Matthews plans to visit some of those students in the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.

Portugal offers a variety of history, culture, architecture, castles, monasteries, vineyards, topography, food, music and more. Matthews spends her days reading, writing, listening to podcasts, studying the language, learning about the culture, connecting with people, building new friendships, exploring new villages, hiking, swimming, practicing yoga and meditation, visiting museums, and attending festivals.

“I try to have a plan most days, but there’s so much to be distracted by,” she says.

Sure, there have been challenges with settling into another country. Topping the

list is navigating the language barrier.

“I’ve ordered something in a restaurant thinking it’s one thing, only to discover I just ate fried squid,” she says.

The perks outweigh the drawbacks, however. Getting to travel full time has enabled her to visit small towns she wouldn’t normally see with limited amounts of time.

“I’ve found some real treasures just by winging it,” she says.

Prior to leaving the U.S., Matthews joined several expat Facebook groups, including one called “Women Over 50 Moving to Portugal.” When she arrived, she was welcomed by the community.

“There’s an instant connection and camaraderie you have with people who are on a similar journey,” Matthews says. “I’ve developed a core group of wonderful friends whom I could call on, day or night.”

Hope Matthews

This entire experience has made Matthews realize just how capable she is.

“I’ve learned to slow down and be present, and recognize that my worth is not found in what I do,” she says. “I have a new level of inner strength and confidence.”

She now knows that she can live alone but not be lonely.

In fact, she often feels like she’s walking through a postcard that’s come to life.

“My friends and I will be staring out over the ocean and say, ‘Can you believe we get to live here?’” Matthews says.

Although she sometimes misses the “easy” life back home, she may extend her stay once her visa expires in May 2025.

“I’m finding a lot of peace and contentment here.”

THE DONAIDE FOUNDATION TO HOST LUAU TO PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

Steve Roseman, the founder and CEO of Donaide, says he is looking forward to The Donaide Foundation’s 2023 luau event, and hopes to get a strong turnout.

The Donaide Foundation empowers people to engage in positive daily habits and activities to help support mental health.

The event will be held at The Club at Crosspoint, located at 9800 Crosspoint Boulevard in Indianapolis. It will feature

an authentic luau-style dinner, live music, hula dancers, a fire dancer performance, a silent auction and fundraising activities. All of the proceeds from the event will support mental health programs in the Fishers and Noblesville communities.

“Donaide is a nonprofit marketplace,” Roseman says. “It’s a place for people to support their local community. WEDO is my other company that provides mobile bidding technology for nonprofits.”

The Donaide Foundation’s luau event is a positive way to help people with mental health challenges, according to Roseman.

“This event will further support health programs for Fishers and Noblesville residents,” Roseman says. “We assist with depression, anxiety, suicide prevention, loneliness, addiction, etcetera.”

Roseman says sciences have proven that real

relationships, selfless acts of kindness, self-awareness and constant action will change a person’s life positively.

The Donaide Foundation also brings people together to find a positive solution to mental health problems.

“We know the power of human connection can transform lives,” Roseman says. “We have created peer-based programming to provide opportunities for positive, genuine and healthy conversations to unite people. Our programming will be focused on the areas of mental health, physical well-being and financial literacy.”

Roseman adds that The Donaide Foundation also brings together families, friends, business colleagues and complete strangers to put together positive mental momentum in the community.

Luau event sponsorships are available for the event. A $10,000 Host Sponsorship includes a sponsorship brochure and all media ads, save-thedates, corporate sponsorship packets, and event invites. It also includes an event banner and large signage, a Donaide Foundation website and a WEDO site page, table signage, presence in The Donaide Foundation’s social media, 20 guest tickets, and VIP benefits and seating.

Host sponsorships also include a speaking and video opportunity, recognition from the stage, a postevent recognition on social platforms and the official website, and post event recognition in a thank-you ad. Partnership, companion and party sponsorships are also available.

HOW TO QUALIFY

NOMINATE YOUR TOP LOCAL BUSINESSES

To be considered, your business must be nominated by someone other than the owner(s) of the business. Those with the most nominations will be considered before others, so make sure you get your most loyal local fans to nominate your business. When being considered, Towne Post Network editorial staff will review the following criteria to insure these qualifications are met:

We are looking for your favorite local businesses to feature in our Towne Post Network magazines, website, and social media. Each month, we will acknowledge Townies’ Top Local Award recipients and list them in our monthly print publications. There is no cost to be recognized, we’re just looking for the businesses that locals feel are the best!
