THE ROAD TO READING Jeff Mann’s ROAD Scholars wins MSD Lawrence Township Design Challenge Writer / Joshua Lowe
Sixty great ideas. Only one would be the winner. The winning idea would have to be the most innovative and have the most potential to impact not just a single classroom or even a single school — it would have to impact all aspects of Lawrence Township Schools (MSDLT). The project was sponsored by the Lawrence Township Education Foundation, which provides teachers with funding for programs not supported by tax dollars. The winning idea, named ROAD Scholars, came from Jeff Mann, a 20-year veteran English teacher. MSDLT continues to search for business practices that are unique to a school district, notes Director of Grants and Programs Patricia Gerber.
“One of these business practices is to reward an employee who proposes an idea that can improve the effectiveness, efficiency or outcomes of the overall system,” Gerber says. The Design Challenge begins with a short online application — teachers outline their ideas, how they feel it would improve the district and what resources would be needed. The Design Challenge Review Team used a rubric to score more than 60 projects. Just a few finalists then submitted a full proposal. Eventually, Dr. Sean Smith, MSDLT Superintendent, reviewed the proposals, the rubrics and the rankings and ultimately selected Jeff Mann’s ROAD Scholars. Mann, who lives in New Palestine with his wife and three children, began his career in education at Mount Vernon High School and
atGeist.com / JULY 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9
eventually moved to Craig and Belzer Middle School, teaching 7th and 8th grade language arts. Even though Mann has a Master’s in School Administration, he can’t imagine himself out of the classroom. “It’s still fun, and I still enjoy it,” he says. “I do my best to connect kids to books.” Mann particularly enjoys trying to make writing practical to students. For a recent research assignment, instead of writing a traditional research paper, students made webpages to present their research. “I’m always trying to bring a new twist to keep things interesting,” Mann says. In 2009, Jeff received the Lilly Creativity Grant for his project with Riley Children’s Hospital called “Room Rocker,” an online, kid-centered radio station. Part of the grant allowed him to visit Zimbabwe and volunteer at orphanages and schools. The idea for the ROAD Scholars initially occurred to Jeff as he watched an older student help his 1st grade daughter as she boarded the school bus. Eventually, he designed the ROAD
Scholars mentoring program in which older students would sit and read with younger students on the school bus. Student mentors would be selected by their teachers and undergo tutoring and leadership training. “ROAD Scholars fit right in with our biggest initiative to improve our reading achievement,” Gerber says. “It focused on the socioemotional side of riding the bus and having a peer buddy.” Mann developed his proposal over several weeks, researching similar programs and best practices. He eventually created a video to advertise his proposal. During the end-of-the-year celebration, he and the other finalists were called to the stage. When ROAD Scholars was announced as the winner, Jeff received a giant check for $20,000. “I was absolutely thrilled,” he says. Mann spent much of his childhood in southern Ireland, so he has one important plan for the money — attend the U2 concert in Indy this summer. And, of course, he looks forward to seeing ROAD Scholars implemented next school year. Visit msdltf.org to learn more about the Lawrence Township Foundation.

PEOPLE FACTOR HOW TO CHANGE COMPANY CULTURE Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Brian Brosmer
She’s saving employees, one company at a time. It’s not Undercover Boss, but Sanya Strawser, Owner and founder of People Factor is making bosses pay attention without a disguise. Founded just last fall, Strawser’s start up is a response to the lackluster performance by most companies in the area of employee retention. “Employers often do an adequate job of finding the right candidate for a job opening based on qualifications, but then they fall far short of doing what it takes to retain that employee for the long haul,” Strawser says. With 18 years of experience in Human Resources, Strawser has seen her fair share of situations starting with the employee joining the company on a new-hire
honeymoon high and ending with the highly valuable worker parting ways with the company just a year later because of mismatched job expectations. It all comes down to what Strawser calls the culture of the company or the company’s unique personality. It’s People Factor’s signature philosophy. The philosophy centers around the idea that all companies have a culture, but it’s the leader who sets the tone for either an accidental culture or intentional culture. “An intentional culture happens when the leaders set the tone and build a successful environment where all departments support the company’s mission statement, strategies, core values, vision and goal,” Strawser says. “The accidental culture may still allow for some growth, but the random nature of the accidental cultural environment doesn’t support the company’s core values and goals or the people.” 14 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2017 / atGeist.com
No matter what the culture, all human resource professionals would agree that a company’s greatest asset is its people. Ironically, Strawser says in all her years as a Human Resources professional, she has not seen one company with an HR department that’s loved by the rest of the company. But times have changed, and Strawser says it’s time for companies to start investing in their employees. In this generation, where a four-year tenure is considered longevity, Strawser believes it’s time for companies to change their mindset and find a way to foster employee retention. “All employees have one common need,” Strawser says. “They want to have meaningful work and feel valued. If employees don’t feel valued, they start to feel like the job is just a paycheck, and they start looking for something else.”
Strawser says employers can make employees feel valued by starting with simple things like rewarding a job well done with the person’s favorite treat or notes of recognition for demonstrating a core value of the company. But more importantly, she says, “Leaders have to provide a format where employees know it’s safe to speak up and advocate for their needs. They also have to follow through on what they promise to implement.”
everyone,” Strawser says. “We customize it to each client’s needs.” The solutions People Factor offers include employee retention programs, development programs like team building, coaching and training, and diagnostics with focus groups, surveys and interviews. The company also offers recruiting services for companies needing to fill
Another important culture issue People Factor addresses is various teams within a company having differing cultures. For example, an IT team or accounting team may be staffed with people who Strawser calls “heads down” workers who prefer little or no interaction with other team members. “That may work for the job they’re in, but down the road if that employee wants to be promoted, they’ll to have to learn to communicate and interact to fit in with the rest of the overall company culture,” she says. Strawser is spreading her culture message fast. She started People Factor with one client, which was Strawser’s former employer. Strawser was a People Process Leader in her former company’s IT department. She developed a step-by-step method for hiring and interviewing and a strategy for culture development and on-boarding (the plan of engaging an employee in their first year). Upon leaving the company, Strawser continued on with them as a consultant. People Factor started small but ramped up marketing efforts in January. Now, in just seven short months, People Factor has just under a dozen clients. People Factor would love to help improve the culture of your company too. Strawser says they start off small with a discovery phase and build a plan with the solutions that work for that company. “But our program is not the same for atGeist.com / JULY 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 15
specific job openings. For job seekers, People Factor offers career services like executive coaching, resume writing and interview training. Check out what People Factor can do for your company. Contact Sanya Strawser at 317-978-9009, or stop in and visit the HR professionals at 8625 East 116th Street in Fishers for a consultation.

DANGEROUSLY ENTERTAINING BILLY JOEL MURDER MYSTERY MUSICAL RETURNS IN AUGUST Writer / Jocelyn Vare Photographer / Mark Langley & Provided
A murder is going to take place in Fishers this summer. The scene of the crime is the Historic Ambassador House, and the victim is none other than the legendary entertainer, Billy Joel. And the witness is you. Every guest is a witness at the murder mystery dinner performance. Don’t worry, no one will be harmed in the making of the show. The audience interacts with actors to solve a fictional murder scene while enjoying live music, a four-course dinner and a cash bar. “Death of a Piano Man: Who Killed Billy Joel?” is a musical parody created and written by Fishers residents Sandy Thorne, Amanda Bell and Beth Clark. It will be performed by Nickel Plate Players on Friday, August 4 and Saturday, August 5, at the Historic Ambassador House. Tickets are $50 each for Fishers residents and include a full dinner.
Audience members will mix and mingle just like at a real piano bar, enjoying drinks and dinner with fellow guests. They must also pay attention to the activity happening around them. While “Billy Joel” and his piano entertains the guests, other character actors will be plotting a murder and leaving clues. The murder mystery is based on the characters in the Billy Joel classic hit, “Piano Man.” The actors portray the characters found in the song, including John at the bar, The Waitress who practices politics, Davy who is still in the Navy, The Old Man “sitting next to me” and others. One of these characters is plotting the murder of the piano man. “The audience doesn’t role-play but they are right in the middle of all the action,” Wolf says. “They will need to stay on their toes to pick up all of the clues the characters drop while music is playing and dinner is being served.”
18 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2017 / atGeist.com
Guests may have started the evening in the mood for a melody, but by the end, it is up to them to piece the clues together to figure out who killed “Billy Joel.” After dessert, the audience will guess who the murderer is. The performance concludes with the detective revealing the true culprit. The dinner show features a locally-written original script and live music from Ashton Wolf, who plays the role of “Billy Joel.” Wolf is a piano man in real life. The Fishers resident tours the country as a dueling piano player. He is also the co-founder of Nickel Plate Players, a Fishers theater group that he and his wife, Sandy Thorne, started in 2014. The City of Fishers has purchased “Death of a Piano Man: Who Killed Billy Joel?” from Nickel Plate Players for the August performances. The Fishers residents who served as the creators and performers of the murder mystery are compensated for their creative work. This transaction fulfills Nickel Plate Players’ mission. “Nickel Plate Players is the Fishers Music Works ensemble that specializes in creating, writing, producing and selling new musicals and plays in Hamilton County and across the nation,” Wolf says. “We are producing our first full season of local performances this year and are even working on an original, youth-oriented, hip hop musical.” Although Nickel Plate Players has performed at several Central Indiana venues in the past few years, they are pleased to be returning to the Historic Ambassador House & Heritage Gardens in Fishers. It is unlike any other place in the community because it blends Fishers’ 19th century history with a fresh, elegant atmosphere. The Ambassador House’s history began with a farm log cabin in the early 1800s, on what is now the northwest corner of 96th Street and Allisonville Road. Days before a scheduled demolition in 1996, the Ambassador House was rescued by the Fishers Historic Preservation Committee and the Historic Landmarks Foundation. It was relocated to its current location in Heritage Park at 106th Street and Eller Road. Refurbishments, garden design and plantings continued up through the official public opening of the venue in 2009. Today, the Ambassador House is owned by the City of Fishers and managed by the Fishers Park Department. This hidden gem hosts weddings, showers and special events. For the murder mystery atGeist.com / JULY 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 19
dinner, audience members will have the chance to experience the venue’s historic and fashionable interior while solving a nefarious crime. The City of Fishers has collaborated with Nickel Plate Players several times before, including the first performance of the mystery musical in 2015. The show was so popular that encore performances were scheduled for this August. This time, audience members are invited to dress in a “Night on the Town” or 70s costume. Costumes are optional but a prize will be awarded to the best one. “The Fishers Parks and Recreation team has been wanting to collaborate more with local businesses and community organizations, so this partnership fits perfectly with our mission of becoming a smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial city and investing in our local talent to grow the economy from within,” says Rebekah Thomas, Fishers Parks’ Recreation Program Coordinator. “This collaboration among The Nickel Plate Players and the Parks Department will hopefully be the first of many offerings to create unique experiences to all of our residents.”

AUGMENTED REALITY DEBUTS IN TOWNE POST NETWORK MAGAZINES All Nine Hyper Local Community Magazines Now Offering Interactive Print Writer / Tom Britt
July issues of the Towne Post Network magazines will be the first in Indiana to showcase the latest in Augmented Reality (“AR”). What has been popular with gamers for the past few years is now making its way into print marketing, adding an interactive layer to an otherwise 2-dimensional print publication.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
1. Download the Layar app to your mobile device. 2. Scan a page with the AR logo on it. 3. Watch the page come to life!
HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH PAGES ARE INTERACTIVE?
Augmented pages will have the AR logo in the bottom corner. By scanning them with the Layar Augmented Reality app, the page will become interactive showing you a video, web links, photos or even shopping buttons.
WHY AUGMENTED REALITY?
Magazines show up once a month, we need to be relevant every day of the month. To do this, our team utilizes social media, direct mail campaigns, video production and now augmented reality to create engaging content and local marketing programs that really work. While AR is still in its infancy with print, we look at it as another tool in our toolbox to help our local advertisers capture measurable results. If you’d like more information on how the Towne Post Network and our 135,000 plus monthly magazines can benefit your company, please give me a call or email. Better yet, scan our Table of Contents page. Tom Britt, Publisher tom@townepost.com (317) 288-7101
WHY THE LAYAR APP?
We have been testing this application for more than two years and found it to be the most dependable and scalable app for AR. What will be a game changer is the release of Apple’s IOS 10.0 this fall, which will include AR for the first time.

Recipe For Success CUNNINGHAM RESTAURANT GROUP CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF CULINARY ACCOMPLISHMENT
Mike Cunningham is the man behind Cunningham Restaurant Group and restaurant concepts like Mesh, Stone Creek Dining Company, BRU Burger Bar and more.
Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer
In an industry as challenging and unforgiving as the restaurant business, Indianapolis-based Cunningham Restaurant Group (CRG) is still thriving after two decades, with an ever-expanding selection of successful restaurant concepts including Mesh, Boulder Creek Dining Company, Vida and BRU Burger Bar in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington. Founder, CEO and company visionary, Mike Cunningham, says a thorough understanding of day-to-day restaurant logistics, as well as an innate sense for customer hospitality, are crucial to stay successful in such a difficult field with so many competitors. And he should know because his understanding began when he was in the third grade.
State Technical and Community College, he had worked his way up to assistant manager with the Ground Round Grill & Bar burger chain. Cunningham’s foray into entrepreneurship came at age 22 when Ed Sahm, one of his Ground Round colleagues, decided to open his own independent restaurant and pub – Sahm’s on 116th Street in Fishers – and needed a manager. A few years later, Cunningham was debuting his own concept – a frozen yogurt and café shop called the Big Chill - which would expand to five locations beginning in the mid-1980s.
“This is a business I’ve been in my whole life, so I understand when things are not being done right and know how to adjust and fix things,” Cunningham says. “A lot of people think it’s all fun and good times, but this industry is hard work, and there are many moving parts that can go wrong every The youngest of nine children, Cunningham single day. found a prime location in Brownsburg and opened Boulder Creek Dining Company, offering modern fare and a rustic, mountainlodge setting, now in its 21st year and still thriving. CRG was off and running. “The challenge then, and what the challenge will always be, is finding good people that want to take care of others and have that hospitality gene,” he says. “To make guests feel like they’re home when they’re in your restaurant, that’s what sets you apart.” Avon-based, Italy-inspired Charbonos followed a few years after the opening of Boulder Creek, and CRG continued to gain momentum, steadily expanding and adding new establishments to its portfolio including six Stone Creek Dining Company locations in Indiana and Ohio and Moerlein Lager House in Cincinnati. Cunningham has continued to sharpen his command of all things culinary and currently oversees 21 restaurants in four cities, with two new Indy eateries scheduled to open this fall in the Ironworks Hotel on East 86th Street – Rize, a health-conscious breakfast and lunch spot that will offer catering, and Provision, an upscale lunch and dinner concept. “It was a slow, methodical growth over 20 years, and it used to be one (restaurant)
A lot of people think it's all fun and good times, but this industry is hard work... every two years, and then one every year and then multiple per year,” says Cunningham, adding that CRG currently employs approximately 1,600 people.

Adaptation has played a key role in Cunningham’s winning formula, and he says CRG has responded to the rise in customer demand for unique, locally sourced ingredients.
Dreams a Reality
“People want to eat locally grown, healthy food, which is a greener approach for everyone even the restaurants because you’re not trucking your produce from California or your meat from Arkansas or wherever,” he says. “And it keeps those jobs in the state.” Never one to ignore industry trends, Cunningham has gone further than just sourcing local produce from Hoosier growers. He recently purchased a 7,800 square-foot greenhouse on the south side of Indianapolis, where, this summer, CRG will begin harvesting hydroponically grown lettuces, herbs, peppers and tomatoes for its kitchens. “Certainly the local trend is big right now,” Cunningham says. “At our Vida concept, which is new in the last 14 months, we have a hydroponic wall in the kitchen. We’re pulling fresh lettuces and herbs right off our kitchen wall and serving it that day. You have to do things like that and evolve in this kind of business to keep things fresh and interesting for everybody.” For additional information on Cunningham Restaurant Group, visit crgdining.com.

A COOL CONCOCTION FORMER COLTS GUARD OPENS INDIANA’S FIRST RITA’S ITALIAN ICE Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Former Indianapolis Colts guard, Donald Thomas, is willing to bet he can find more than a few flavors you will love at Rita’s Italian Ice in Fishers. “We spend a lot of time coming up with flavors that have a wide appeal to a lot of different people,” Thomas says. “So far, we gave been a big hit with kids and adults. One of the things I love about owning a business like this is that everyone comes in here happy and already in a good mood. They come in to celebrate their kids winning
a game. They stop in for a treat after work to sit outside, or come in after dinner or a movie. They make a special trip because we are a fun destination.” Rita’s Italian Ice is the world’s largest Italian Ice concept with more than 600 stores in the U.S. It was rated No. 1 in Restaurant News’ “Consumer Picks 2014” for service and value in the frozen treat category. When you walk in the door at Rita’s Italian Ice in the Lantern Crossing Shopping Plaza in Fishers, there are signs telling customers they can “order happiness” and “pick up” happiness. the kids to write and draw on. “We opened last March and have had a very steady flow of regular customers,” Thomas says. “We had people lined up outside the door when we opened, and we were packed. They were thrilled we opened.” Rita’s closed last November for the winter, but reopened March 3 to eager customers waiting to get their frozen treats. “I think people have enjoyed the wide variety of flavors we offer,” Thomas says. “We change flavors every week. We use water, sugar, syrup and real fruit pieces in
the ice. It's the real deal.” Rita’s Italian Ice has more than 90 different flavors. “We make 12 different flavors each day and rotate them continuously,” Thomas says. “We also make sure to keep a steady supply of our most popular flavors such as mango and cherry. Cotton Candy is the number one choice among kids, and mango has been the most popular with adults. Our margarita ice is also very popular.” Other big hits include Sour Patch Kids, Birch Beer, Strawberry Cheesecake, Tropical Punch, Jolly Ranchers and Birthday Cake. “We have non-dairy options, as well as all-natural flavors and non-sugar treats,” Thomas adds. There are also plenty of choices of gelatins, custards, milkshakes and blendinis to choose from. Thomas first discovered Rita’s Italian Ice when he was a kid in Connecticut. “It was one of my favorite places to go to in the summer time,” Thomas says. “It stayed with me through the years, and when I went home to see family in the summer, I always wanted to go there. It was a fun weekend thing.” Thomas thought Rita’s was a strong brand on the East Coast that would carry over well in Indiana. The original Rita’s started in Philadelphia. “This is the first Rita’s franchise in Indiana, but I would love to open one in the Carmel and Westfield area, the Avon area and on the southeast side,” Thomas says. “I believe it's a very strong brand and will eventually become more of a household name.” Thomas did a lot of franchise research before opening his Rita's in Fishers. When he was finished with his NFL career, which started with the Miami Dolphins from 2008 to 2010, followed by playing for the Detroit Lions in 2010, the New England Patriots from 2011 to 2013 and the Indianapolis JULY 2017 / GEIST/FISHERS MAGAZINE
Colts from 2013 to 15, he was ready for a new challenge. “I knew this was a franchise I wanted to get involved in,” Thomas says. “I know the Rita’s brand has been battle-tested. It’s been very popular with both kids and adults. People want to indulge in a treat. I love watching people enjoying their selections.” Thomas has been busy getting out and promoting the Rita’s brand at parties, catering events, social gatherings and also through a mobile cart and a lot of leg work. “I've had a lot of fun getting to know all of the great people who come in here and out in the community,” he says. “I've had nothing but positive people telling me how much they love the products and how it gives them a good feeling. I've enjoyed making them happy.” Stop by Rita’s at 8910 E. 96th Street this summer for a frozen treat.

Hall says both the Blast on the Bridge and the Fireworks display are fundraisers for the Geist Lake Coalition's clean water initiatives, along with sponsorships and other fundraising efforts. “The bulk of these initiatives are stream bank remediation and erosion control projects, the purchase of a new channel, shoreline set back and idle zone buoys,” Hall says. “It also funds our Geist Clean Up days, lake safety awareness, as well as the treatment of Invasive Aquatic Weeds and Algae in common areas. “The Geist Lake Coalition treats weekly for the invasive aquatic weeds and algae on well over 300 surface acres of shoreline at Geist, which is almost 20 percent of the entire reservoir,” Hall adds. Elliot says the Blast on the Bridge is “one of the best fireworks shows in Central Indiana.” “The location is unique and the experience is second to none,” Elliot says. “The fact that the event supports The Geist Lake Coalition and the health and safety of the lake gives a certain gravitas and community impact to the event as well.” One big change is that there will be no boat parade this year. “At this time, we do not plan to host the boat parade for this year’s parade,” Elliot says. Hall, however, says he is “personally looking forward to a safe boating season, seeing thousand of residents, their guests and visitors enjoy the reservoir and the fun that comes along with lake living.” Hall is also looking forward to “another fabulous fireworks display and celebration.” “This is a very special tradition, and one that is extra special at Geist Reservoir,” he says. “There is absolutely no better way to see this beautiful display reflect off the water at Geist, and our Pyro Technician Extraordinaire, Marty Miller, always pleases.” Hall says The Geist Lake Coalition is proud to bring the show to area residents. “We couldn't do it without their continuous support,” Hall says. “The show is costly, and we rely on the donation's from local homeowners and small businesses to fund it.”

Grilling season is here and grilling inspires creativity. You can’t get more creative than this unusual and flavorful hunk of meat.
What is a caveman pork chop?
It comes from the saddle of the hog, and includes the loin chop and the pork belly — two completely different flavor profiles and traditionally, two very different cooking methods. The pork belly, which has recently become the rage with celebrity chefs, is cooked low and slow at 250 degrees for three hours or more. Pork belly is also the source of our every-day go-to breakfast treat — bacon.
So, how do you cook the caveman pork chop?
Simple! You want a hot, hot grill and you’ll want flare up, all the things you usually try to avoid. Why flare up? Because the pork belly is very fatty — again, think bacon — and you want to let the fat burn off. But let’s start with how to prepare the chops. The chops can be anywhere from ¾” to 1 ¼” thick, but if you’re going to serve more than one, make certain you ask for the same thickness so you get consistent cooking on all. Let the chops come to room temperature (about one hour). Pat dry and rub on some vegetable oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper or your favorite meat seasoning and rub into the chops. Place your chops on the hot grill and close the cover, but don’t go far. Putting the cover down helps spur the flare up, so you need to be nearby. Let the flames burn off some of the fat. When the belly portion begins to char and you have good grill marks, turn the chops. About four to five minutes depending on thickness. Overcooking pork is a common error and leads to dryness. When your chops are done (internal temperature of 145 degrees) remove from the grill and tent with foil and rest for at least five minutes. This is important because it helps to retain natural juices and moisture.

WELCOME TO THE KENT STERLING SHOW LOCAL CBS SPORTS RADIO PERSONALITY TALKS PEOPLE, PASSION AND PURPOSE Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Jamie Sangar
For Kent Sterling, it’s not about the sports. Sure, Sterling has hosted the sports-centric Kent Sterling Show on CBS Sports 1430 AM in Indianapolis since 2014, and possesses the same level of enthusiasm for athletics and competition he discovered throughout his youth playing baseball, tennis, basketball, football and golf in his native Lake Bluff, Illinois. His radio show regularly features players, coaches, athletic directors and sports media personalities, with in-depth commentary on all corners of the sports world.
or a Paul George — how those guys came to be those guys and how they respond to adversity. A lot of the lessons you hear about when talking to people in athletics are universal.” A 1986 graduate of Indiana University’s School of Journalism, Sterling feels his popular radio show has been a fitting next step in a career that has included management positions with Emmis Communications in Indianapolis and Hubbard Broadcasting in St. Louis and even a stint performing at The Second City improvisational comedy theater in Chicago in the early 1990s.
“Second City was really good training – you learn to trust yourself and trust your Still, Sterling insists that his passion is process,” Sterling says. “Doing a sports talk ultimately for learning about people and radio show or any kind of talk radio show, it telling their stories. can be a little bit daunting unless you learn to let go of the nerves and wondering what “What I really enjoy talking about is what you’re going to do to fill three hours. Now, three years into The Kent Sterling Show, which airs on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. EST, Sterling begins formulating the day’s program as soon as he rolls out of bed and begins checking his Twitter feed for breaking sports news. As a primer for the afternoon show, Sterling also posts a brief live video each morning on Facebook to get his followers and listeners excited about the biggest stories of the day. “I try to go places that radio people typically don’t,” he says. “If the Colts or the Pacers are going to have media availability I’ll go over to their facilities and sit in, and get a one-onone (interview) or two. I think I can get just a little bit more understanding if I go the extra mile and go places, and sit and listen to people speak. Because of that, I think we have the best guests in town and the best insight in town. With the Indianapolis 500, we did our show from the pace car garage every single day the track was open.” Sterling feels early involvement in athletics helped shape his professional work ethic and discipline, and he says the same of his son Ryan, who played
basketball as an undergraduate at Loyola University in Chicago. “I got to see firsthand how sports informed him and made him the person that he’s become,” Sterling says. “He just graduated from law school at IUPUI and sports are a big part of what he’s accomplished — figuring out how to manage his time and how to see adversity as something he can overcome rather than as something that’s going to discourage him.” Sterling says he probably couldn’t name a single favorite interview among the wide range of sports personalities with whom he’s spoken on air, but a few certainly stand out in his mind. “Johnny Bench was really stellar,” he says. “I did about 25 minutes with him and couldn’t stop asking him questions. There are some guys and girls you just enjoy talking to, who are willing to reveal parts of themselves. You feel like there’s an implicit trust where you can’t ask them a bad question. Stephanie White and Matt Painter are like that. The people with Butler basketball are so enjoyable to talk to.” After three years as a full-time sports radio personality, Sterling’s passion and painstaking commitment to his craft show no signs of fading any time soon. “If I ever wind up seeing sports as something I have to do instead of something that I get to do, I’ll probably pack my bag and go do something else,” Sterling says. “But I don’t envision that ever happening. I love writing about it and I love talking about it. There’s so much that happens within each athlete and each team. It’s endlessly fascinating.” For more details on The Kent Sterling Show, visit cbssports1430.com/ shows/kent-sterling-show.

A TASTE OF EUROPE ARTISAN PICNIC USES FRESH, LOCAL FOODS FOR CASUAL DINING
Photos provided by Courtney Geyer
Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies
The weather is warming up, more of what we do is outside and that means it is picnic season. There is nothing quite like taking some time to relax outdoors and enjoy casual dining with your loved ones. If you’re looking for ways to plan the perfect summer picnic without all the effort, Artisan Picnic, a new locally-owned, Fishers-based business, has just what you need to make your next picnic with friends and family memorable. Picnics can be as simple or as sophisticated as any meal you plan, but having the option of placing an order online to create the perfect picnic can take away the stress of planning the meal and put the emphasis on time with family and friends. Sarah Reuter,
founder and owner of Artisan Picnic, came up with the idea while vacationing in Paris, France a year ago. The inspiration to bring a European, earthfriendly gourmet picnic, filled with fresh, local artisanal foods, literally came in the middle of the perfect picnic in Champ de Mars Park in Paris near the Eiffel Tower. “I had a moment where it just hit me that I wanted to recreate and bring this experience back to Indianapolis,” says Reuter, a former travel executive. “In Europe there is a bread shop, cheese shop, a meat store, a wine store on every corner, and as I was having this amazing picnic experience, I thought, ‘I want to recreate this experience using local food artisans and farmers.’” INDY METRO / JULY 2017 / TownePost.com
She began thinking about some of the local cheese shops and markets right in her neighborhood, realizing that there were so many local butcher shops and bread makers popping up. Reuter realized this was a viable idea as she recalled all the amazing local food artisans and how it might help their businesses. too. Their gourmet picnics include a wide selection of fresh artisanal foods with three choices, “The Frenchie”, “The Italiano” and “The Veggie”. “The Frenchie and The Italiano menu options are similar to the traditional styles of French and Italian Charcuterie (cured meats) and cheese boards,” she says. “Each of the options consists of local artisanal bread, cheeses,
charcuterie, sweet and savory spreads, something pickled and something sweet. The Veggie menu simply leaves out the meat and adds in a variety of fresh local seasonal vegetables and fruits. Reuter is partnering currently with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on their lunch break series in June and three coming up in July where she will be onsite to offer the picnics so you can enjoy the concert without having to worry about getting lunch beforehand. Artisan Picnic is also partnering with the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Fishers Farmers Markets, The Original Farmers Market downtown Indy and is working to expand with more vendors at popular events around the city. If you are interested in trying one of the picnics, check out their calendar of events to see where they will be located throughout the season. Since they do not have a store-front yet, all orders need to be placed online through the website to pre-order and pay for your picnic prior to their event that is on their calendar. Or you can order a picnic for an event of your choosing. Reuter can work with individuals or corporations with advance notice. When a local business is set up to support other local businesses that gives their customers great food and makes spending time with your friends and family easy to enjoy summer, then everyone wins. Order your picnic and let’s support our local food artisans in Indiana. For more information about Artisan Picnic vendors, picnic descriptions and their event schedule visit their website at artisanpicnic.com. TownePost.com / JULY 2017 / INDY METRO

INDY’S “AMBASSADOR OF AWESOME” MEET THE MAN BEHIND CHEF’S NIGHT OFF AND RETURN OF THE MAC Writer / Mary Ryan Photographer / Jamie Sangar
We all remember “that kid” from the neighborhood. The one who was always in trouble on the bus, getting suspended from school or dropping out of school. They’re the one you look back on and wonder, ‘what ever happened to so – and – so? I wonder if they ever figured it out.’
R.J. Wall was definitely that kid. Growing up in Geist Landing and attending Lawrence North High School, he was the one always getting in trouble. Amidst the trouble maker though is a philanthropic spirit who has a passion for pets and nature. So, how does someone whose major interests include food and drinks, music and travel make a career out of it after dropping out of high school at 17? atGeist.com / JULY 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 53
When your business card reads “Ambassador of Awesome” there’s likely an exciting story to follow. Some people say, “Not all who wander are lost”. This couldn’t be truer for Wall. He spent most of his 20s and 30s, not lost but trying to figure out where “home” was. He moved from Indy to Louisville, California, Denver, Chicago and then returned to
really starting to get some legs, and I wanted to facilitate that growth.” CNO is a “pirate dinner” where sous chefs and line cooks from locally owned restaurants and bars can highlight their culinary brain children at pop-up dinners all over Indianapolis focusing on slow food. Not stopping with Chef’s Night Off, Wall could see the heavy metal and rock music scene in Indy was growing in regards to promotion or production. Take his love of his dog Dahlia and his love of metal music and you get Dahlia Presents. Dahlia Presents not only promotes shows, but they also seek out talent, book bands and organize shows in Indiana including rock, punk and metal music.
Indianapolis when his father was battling cancer. Along the way, he’s hiked at Garden of the Gods, Mt. Ranier, and the Rio Grande Basin abroad and Cedar Bluffs and Grubb Ridge locally, always carving out time for hiking as one of his true passions. For now, home is in Broad Ripple where R.J. is an active member of the Broad Ripple community and the Taste of Broad Ripple event. At the forefront of his journey, R.J. started out like several of us did through his 20s and early 30s — working in restaurants. He held a variety of positions from busing and bartending to waiting tables and eventually running the front of the house. He’s a self-taught wine and liquor connoisseur and full-fledged foodie who cultivated his love of food and beverage into a flourishing business.
“Dahlia Presents was an accident,” Wall says. “I was running HiFi (a concert and special events venue) and wanted a reason to partner with 3 Floyds, so I did a tap takeover the day After being on the road for years, R.J. knew before Winterfest and 3 Floyds equals metal, Indy was where he wanted to call home. so it was an easy marriage. partnership,” Wall says. “I’ve learned a great deal over the years from him and continue to do so. I share this success with Indy. If it were not for the support of Hoosiers, we could not do it.” When two businesses were not enough to keep R.J.’s wandering soul busy, one of the biggest food events to hit Indiana was created. What are two things people love? Mac N’ Cheese and food fests. With that, Return of the Mac made its debut in Indy, followed by Bloomington and last month in Noblesville. “This was a marriage of MOKB Presents and CNO,” Wall says. “MOKB Presents co-founder and my partner, Josh Baker, kicked around this idea for a while and finally pulled the trigger last November.” They thought about how to get folks together to indulge in the world’s greatest comfort food and decided to bring chefs in from all types of cuisines and restaurants to create their own version of the cheesy staple and create a mac n’ cheese fest of sorts. Return of the Mac has already hit the road this spring and plans to do so this summer and fall, so keep a look out for an event near you.

We routinely share information with parents based on guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) about relevant topics for children’s health and safety. Summer break is in full swing, and your children will be spending a lot of time outdoors. Outside play and activities are an important part of keeping children active and healthy. While it is true that some exposure to the sun contributes to our body’s production of Vitamin D, excessive sun exposure can greatly increase the risk of skin cancer and cause severe and painful burns. You can help protect your children by follow these guidelines.
Sun Safety Tips! • For children under 6 months old, the AAP recommends that infants avoid sun exposure when possible. Use lightweight, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, brimmed hats and keep infants in the shade to prevent sunburn. If these interventions are not available, you may apply a minimal amount of sunscreen to exposed areas, taking care around the infant’s eyes. • Select a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen with a SPF of 15 to 50 to prevent skin damage. • Spray sunscreen is not recommended for use with children. Some of the risks with using spray sunscreen include inhalation of the spray possibly causing lung irritation, not getting full coverage due to spray pattern or windy conditions, and sprays are flammable when not completely dry. • Sunscreen should be applied 15 to 30 minutes prior to going outside to give time for proper absorption.

What can you do if your child does develop a sunburn? If your child is younger than one, or if it is a severe sunburn involving, pain, fever or blisters, you should contact your Pediatrician right away. Medicated creams should be used only under the advisement of the pediatrician. Applying a cool compress or cool water to the affected area can be soothing and help lessen the intensity of the burn. If the sunburn is particularly painful, pain medications, such as acetaminophen, may help ease the pain. Take care to avoid sun exposure with your sunburned child until the sunburn is fully healed.

CONFRONTING GENDER PARITY
HEALTHCARE BUSINESSWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION INDIANA Writer / Janet Sriebel Photography provided by HBA Indiana
Our culture faces gender parity issues among many sectors, including healthcare leadership. Whether the discrepancy is defined in terms of earned wages or management titles, men and women, globally, are stepping up to collaborate and challenge this ultra-slow-moving progression. “Women make 80 percent of healthcare decisions in this country, yet most of the leaders in organizations are run by men,” says Erin Albert, President of Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Indiana. “I want to see more women at the helms of these organizations,” she adds. If 80 percent of the customers are making these decisions but they aren’t in charge, then there is a serious mismatch.” By day, Erin works as a health outcomes pharmacist at Myers and Stauffer, PLLC. She spends the rest of her time as a consultant, writer, podcaster, pharmacist, attorney entrepreneur and career coach. The Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) is made up of 8,000 members internationally, while the Indiana chapter is comprised of more than 200 members.
Erin also speaks highly about the ‘manbassadors’, or male leaders, who are mentoring and sponsoring women in healthcare, thereby supporting HBA’s mission of gender parity in healthcare and leadership. First, her appreciation begins with Jack Phillips, CEO of Roche Diagnostics, who graciously introduced Jennifer Cook of Roche, as the Woman of the Year HBA global in 2016 at a local Indy event. “Afterwards, we sent Phillips a purple manbassador sash as a thank-you,” Erin says. “He put the sash on. We posted a picture on the internet and it exploded. There were more than 5,000 views. We are grateful to Jack for supporting the promotion of women at Roche, and with the Women’s Leadership Initiative at Roche.” Ironically, she says the manbassador concept got started by young men in the Ivy League business schools who wanted to engage men and women in the conversation about gender parity and leadership. Second, Bryan Mills, President and CEO of Community Health Network (CHN), was among the panel of four male leaders who discussed how to mentor and sponsor women in healthcare at the recent HBA Manbassador event held 60 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2017 / atGeist.com
on June 13 in downtown Indy — along with manbassadors from Lilly, Roche Diagnostics, and BioCrossroads. Erin credits Mills for his phenomenal reputation for promoting a lot of women within CHN. Interested in becoming a mentor? The mentoring circles (program for HBA Indiana members) consists of two mentors for every four or five mentees within HBA. Visit hbanet.org/hba-indiana-chaptermentoring-program to register or to learn more. Finally, Erin recognizes Nick Adkins, of Portland, Oregon, who created a contagious symbol for disruption of healthcare in the form of handing out pink knee socks. She has cleverly transferred this badge of honor craze to the purple socks awards, which will be awarded at the 2017 HBA Indiana annual awards banquet in November. Anyone may nominate a healthcare innovator a tinyurl. com/PurpleSocksHBAIndiana. The annual HBA Awards Banquet will be held in November. This year, there will be a community-wide initiative to find local innovators in healthcare and/or life sciences to honor. Yes, they will receive purple socks! “We will have an open-call for everyone to
nominate their healthcare or life science rockstar, male or female,” Erin says. She also encourages men to carry on the manbassador movement. “We want men to get involved in various capacities — from joining HBA to mentoring and sponsoring women, either within or outside their organizations,
and awarding and promoting women within their organizations,” Erin says. “It’s a whole spectrum of positive behaviors around ultimately creating and achieving gender parity more quickly.” One HBA member speaks out about her involvement with this dynamic organization.
“I’ve seen many women grow from their involvement in HBA,” says Tiffini Cook, HBA Indiana Immediate Past President and Marketing Manager at Roche Diabetes Care, Inc. “I’ve been able to build upon my current leadership experience, make some great connections personally and professionally and learn new skills along the way.”
HBA UPCOMING EVENTS On July 26, a collaboration of two organizations, HBA and Women & Hi Tech, will join forces at the casual networking event held at The Sky Farm at Eskenazi Health from 6 to 8 p.m. You can mingle with other women beyond healthcare by meeting members of Women & Hi Tech, another local organization which provides educational opportunities and support of women in STEM.
In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.
Drinks and appetizers are included in the registration price at HBA Indiana. Members and non-members can register at hbanet.org/ chapters/indiana by July 19 for discounted rates. In September, HBA will host a Healthcare Career Development conference series at Miles Printing/ Harding Poorman. The event will feature 18 speakers among six topics within a halfday and was a top request of HBA IN members in 2017. On October 23, there will be an HB8 small group evening dinearound focusing on Women in Healthcare IT.

A VIEW FROM THE REAR WINDOW OF LIFE… LET’S EAT OUT AND SHOUT AT EACH OTHER! Writer / J. Andy Murphy
What’s up with the restaurant scene of having music blaring so loud that diners have to shout at each other to be heard? A sampling of five restaurants in nearby areas (fine dining to hamburgers) present a deafening experience that will send you home with a sore throat and ringing in your ears.

Are you making the same retirement mistake that 64 percent of Americans are making who have children under the age of 18 years? Or that 58 percent of Americans are making who are under the age of 52? Or the 40 percent who are under 71 years of age? Retirement planning goes beyond what you are saving or not saving.
For those who do not have children - or have adult children, who can manage their own finances - you are able to control the distribution of your assets as you wish.
An estate-planning attorney can assist you in lowering the tax consequences in a number of ways, including death transfers that occur outside your estate, such as joint tenancy, beneficiary designations and transfer on death designations.

DREAM GOALS NEW CATHEDRAL BOYS SOCCER COACH, PAUL “WHITEY” KAPSALIS, PENS MEMOIR OF INCREDIBLE SOCCER JOURNEY Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Paul “Whitey” Kapsalis and his siblings were introduced to soccer while living in St. Louis. The entire family loved it. Whitey’s father, Andy, worked for Allstate Insurance and was relocated to Minnesota where youth soccer didn’t exist, so the Kapsalis family started one. This club has since exploded in growth. The next stop was in Michigan. There, they started the Bonanza Express Soccer league, which was a select travel team, for his parents had a vision as to what the youth soccer landscape would become.
had a huge influence upon me.” While Pete was at MSU, the Kapsalis family moved to Carmel in 1981. Danny, the second of five, was a senior and Whitey was a sophomore. Soccer was not yet a varsity sport at the high school, and it was Whitey’s mom, Becky, who led the charge to petition and get soccer accepted as a varsity sport at Carmel High School. Ultimately, the IHSAA adopted it.
Danny graduated from Carmel High School, where he set school records for scoring and walked on at Indiana University, the best soccer program in the country. Whitey gave a verbal commitment to play at Michigan State. Then, Danny won a National title at IU, and Whitey turned his attention to Bloomington. Whitey called the IU coach to talk about playing there.
“I was told that I wasn’t good enough, and they had seven returning starters and they While living in Carmel, the Kapsalis family had their pick of blue chip players from across the country,” Whitey says. “But this would road trip to Chicago to buy their was my dream, and I made the decision the soccer gear. Becky was inspired to open a soccer store in Carmel, and 25 years later, it night before I was to check in at MSU that I was voted the No. 1 soccer store in the U.S. was going to IU and do whatever I could to make the team as a walk-on.” His oldest brother Pete played soccer for “Soccer was something that our family Michigan State University. It made sense to go to Michigan State when found a lot of joy in, as it provided a fun “This was groundbreaking for our family,” Whitey assessed the pros and cons on opportunity to a wide range of kids,” Whitey says. “Playing at another level, at paper, but the intangible element of having Whitey says. “It was simply our passion, Division 1, a Big 10 collegiate athlete — this and we were pursuing what we believed in.” a dream was a challenge to transcend by a 66 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2017 / atGeist.com
mere pen. After a three-hour conversation with his parents discussing why he was making this decision, it ultimately came to down to one question. “Can I play at that level? Would I always wonder what would have been?” Whitey says. “I would rather have known that I had tried and failed than not have attempted it at all.” Whitey placed a call to Coach Joe Baum at Michigan State and told him the news. Baum was gracious in receiving this call. Then he called Coach Jerry Yeagley and informed him that he was coming. Once on campus, Whitey attended and watched all of the practices, working out on his own until the tryouts. He started doing the math and every factor weighed against him. Whitey was a long shot, but he worked his tail off and made the cut. He was the only player selected as a walk-on from tryouts. Even though he was red shirted his freshman year, Whitey was over the moon that he was a part of the program. They won another National Championship that year. “The first time I met Whitey, I awarded him the defensive player of the Indiana high school soccer tournament and thought, ‘nice kid’, that was it,” Coach Yeagley says. “After placing him at the bottom of our 35-player roster, I thought he would quit. He was undersized, not very athletic and simply lacked that special talent we looked for at IU. I could not have
been more wrong in that assessment and couldn’t be more grateful. “Heart and character aren’t’ always evident,” Yeagley adds. “What I discovered was that this nice, bright-eyed kid has the heart of a lion and the leadership skills any coach covets in a player. Maybe Pauls’ rough road — sitting out year after year and being repeatedly told he wasn’t good enough, being encouraged to transfer, suffering a year-long, career threatening injury — was what gave him that character and heart. Maybe his odyssey was something of a test.” The rest of Whitey’s incredible journey to becoming a starter and co-captain with Bruce Killough, is detailed in his book, “A Dream: A Soccer Championship, an Unlikely Hero and a Journey That Redefined Winning”. While at IU, Whitey met his wife, Sherri, a State Champion gymnast who attended IU on a full-ride scholarship for
gymnastics only to have the program cut her sophomore year. The couple has three children: Katrina, Nicolette and Trey. The Kapsalis legacy at IU includes the youngest brother, Dean, who played soccer for four years with the team. The next generation continues the family tradition. Nicolette will be a freshman midfielder and forward for the IU women’s soccer team. She will join her cousin, Macy Miller (also a midfielder and forward) as a teammate. Macy is the daughter of Whitey’s sister, Deanne. Whitey recently accepted the head coaching position for the boys’ varsity team at Cathedral High School, where Trey will be a senior. His older brothers, Danny and Pete, both still coach youth soccer teams. “To Chase A Dream: A Soccer Championship, An Unlikely Hero and A Journey That Re-Defined Winning” by Paul “Whitey” Kapsalis and Ted Gregory may be purchased on amazon.com.
