HEROES HOMEFRONT

Jamie Boer Homes and the

“Heroes Give Back Program”

A LETTER FROMJamie Boer

Following on from the launch of our first magazine in April, I am proud to bring you this next issue!

In this edition, you will have the opportunity to learn more about a local Fishers Firefighter and a Fall Creek Junior High teacher that recently won the Teacher of the Year award.

These two hero stories were written by Macy Walts, the daughter of Peter Walts, an original Homefront Hero. Inspired by the compassion and dedication she sees at home, she is excited for the opportunity to honor heroes who embody such a spirit.

My work is not just about real estate, it’s about building connections and fostering a sense of purpose & belonging. I have always believed in the power of positivity. This magazine continues to highlight the

positive people who make a difference in our community every day, and inspire others to want to do the same.

From educators and healthcare professionals to law enforcement officers and volunteers, these individuals embody the spirit of service and make our community a better place to live.

That’s where the idea for this magazine was born. I wanted to create a platform where these remarkable individuals could be celebrated and honored for their tireless efforts and commitment. Our Heroes Magazine is my way of saying “thank you” to those who make our community special.

In addition to highlighting community heroes, our magazine provides valuable resources for residents who want to contribute to the betterment of our

community. From volunteer opportunities to community initiatives, this magazine serves as a hub for residents. Additionally, we recognize the value of businesses giving back to the heroes they serve. That is why our Heroes Magazine highlights businesses that are making a difference through unique discounts and special offers in the community.

Jamie Boer Homes is offering a percentage of our commission back to our heroes through the JBH ‘Heroes Give Back Program.’ This initiative is our way of thanking healthcare professionals, educators, military personnel, and others for their contributions to our community.

My hope is that this magazine will serve as a reminder of the incredible impact that we can all have when we come together for the greater good of others.

SPECIAL THANKS TO: Amy Payne (Photography), Natalie Gargiulo (Writer), & Macy Walts (Writer)

AIMEE BASTIN

Teacher

FALL CREEK JUNIOR HIGH

PASSION FOR INCLUSION

Aimee Bastin, a Champion for Students with Disabilities

It’s no secret that teachers are the backbones of communities. Aimee Bastin exemplifies this role through her 29 years of dedication. Currently teaching at Fall Creek Junior High, she focuses on 7th and 8th grade students with disabilities in the Department of Exceptional Learners.

Creating a welcoming environment is paramount to Bastin. She wants every student to feel their best in the classroom, and when they don’t, she takes it upon herself to fix it. For instance, when she co-taught in a 5th grade classroom at the beginning of her career, Bastin transformed her office into a sanctuary for a student who needed breaks from the classroom. When the boy was unable to speak, Bastin devised a method using written yes or no questions for him to circle his answers. Through this, she was able to decipher what he wanted to communicate. “I made a lot of progress with him that year, and worked to teach him how to use better coping skills when he was upset,” Bastin says. “I will never forget him.”

Bastin advocates passionately for inclusion, ensuring all her students have equal opportunities. Each year, students at the junior high level are invited to attend a trip to Camp Tecumseh. This can cause some anxiety for students who may not have experienced an overnight camp-setting before. Bastin volunteers to attend the trip along with

her students in order to provide necessary accommodations, allowing them to enjoy the opportunities that come with leaving the classroom. “Some of my favorite memories are sending pictures of the students to their parents, making their way to the top of the climbing tower, saying, “Look what they did!”

Bastin makes it a goal of hers to be a strong pillar of support for her students and their families. “Many times, parents of students with exceptional needs feel alone or don’t know how to help when their child is struggling. Opening that door for parents and students to communicate with me just helps me become a better educator.”

Bastin says the most fulfilling part of her job stems from these connections. She still keeps in touch with many students from over the years, and celebrates her former students’ successes, even naming a few who have attended medical or law school. “I think being able to continue to fulfill that role as someone who has helped my students navigate life is very rewarding to me.”

Over the years, Bastin has accumulated many remarkable achievements through her commitment and compassion for these students. One great achievement was starting a Peer Partnership program for her fourth graders to work alongside students who were non-verbal, which turned out to be a great success for the

students involved. Bastin, along with the two Communications and Foundations for Learning teachers she worked with, went to San Antonio, Texas to present their peer-partnership program at the Council for Exceptional Children’s national conference. They showed other educators the importance of such a program, inspiring them to establish similar ones in their own schools.

Bastin was also announced this year’s Teacher of the Year for Hamilton Southeastern Schools, a testament to the profound impact she has made throughout her career.

Bastin credits her colleagues and emphasizes the camaraderie among teachers as essential to their collective success. “There are so many teachers that are deserving of this,” she says, “I value so much the people that I work with every day, we help each other.”

Aimee Bastin’s story is an exemplification of the profound impact educators have, shaping futures and fostering inclusivity across the Hamilton Southeastern district and beyond. For those wanting to make a similar impact, Bastin urges those interested to consider working in the Department of Exceptional Learners, which has many openings across the Hamilton Southeastern district.

CHAD

ABEL

Firefighter FISHERS FIRE DEPARTMENT

DEDICATION & COMPASSION

Fishers Firefighter and EMT Chad Abel

Within our community, there are countless individuals working tirelessly to keep it safe. One such hero is Chad Abel, a Fishers firefighter of 29 years and an exemplary figure of dedication and compassion. Abel’s journey began 35 years ago, when he became a cadet at only 15. By the time he was 21, he was already a paramedic.

This journey began with Abel’s desire to help those around him. “The thing that has drawn me to this fire service for 35 years is a compassion that I see in my fellow firefighters, and how we take that to the community that we serve,” he says.

Firefighting entails much more than many people realize. In addition to battling fires, firefighters like Abel serve as EMTs, providing first hand critical care in medical emergencies. Whether it be chemical spills or machinery entrapments, these firefighters must be prepared for any challenge they may face. Such work requires immense bravery, and an unrelenting commitment to helping others.

Abel recalls one particularly memorable rescue in which he climbed 60 feet to rescue a young boy stuck in a tree. With the fire department lacking a ladder tall enough, Abel and his team had to think on their feet. They assembled equipment by hand, right on scene, and put together a successful rescue mission.

However, not all rescues end as positively. Abel’s line of work often exposes him to challenging, emotionally taxing situations. Abel believes these hardships have taught him how to appreciate life’s silver linings. “Oftentimes, it’ll remind you to focus on those better parts. I think that can be a blessing to us, is to know how good life really can be, and to recognize to enjoy those moments,” Abel says.

For Abel, one of these silver linings is the community he’s become a part of. “Some of the closest people in my life are people that I’ve worked in a firehouse with,” he remarks. He recalls their time shared in the firehouse, sitting around the kitchen table together and laughing--memories he says are his favorite.

Equally important are the connections Abel has made in his community through his dedicated years of service. Such interactions, Abel believes, have awarded him with a new perspective on life. “You come into contact with so many different people from so many different walks of life, that it kind of opens your eyes up to how diverse our community is, and that’s a great thing,” says Abel. “It’s probably allowed me to see the world through a lot of different lenses.”

Abel’s compassion extends beyond just firefighting. He dedicates his time to the Hoosier Burn Camp, a summer camp for young burn survivors held at Camp Tecumseh. Abel has helped here for the

last 26 years, though he initially planned to stay for just one. “That first year changed me. I saw the strongest human beings that I’ve ever met in my life” he says.

Quickly, in my mind, I exchanged the word victim for survivor, because when you interact with these kids, and you see them not just surviving but thriving, you pretty quickly realize what strength looks like, and you want more of it.

Abel also helps with the camp’s fundraising events, including an annual masquerade ball, as well as a silent auction.

Chad Abel is an inspiring testament to what compassion can achieve. By supporting those around us, each person can play a vital role in shaping an empathetic and resilient environment, just as Abel and his fellow firefighters continue to do each day.

JARRED KOOPMAN K-9 Officer FISHERS POLICE DEPARTMENT

BADGE OF HONOR

Fishers K-9 Officer Jarred Koopman, A HERO in our community

Jarred Koopman, a dedicated K-9 officer with the Fishers Police Department, has become a humble hero in the community, inspiring people through his acts of kindness and his love for two special dogs.

His bravery in protecting the community, coupled with his commitment to its residents, has touched many hearts in Fishers.

The K-9 officer’s journey as a community hero began when he encountered a man walking to work, radiating positivity despite facing challenges.

Moved by the man’s happiness, Koopman struck up a conversation to learn more.

“I saw him dancing and singing on his way to work every day, so I stopped to ask him what brought him such joy,” Koopman recalled. “He shared that he worked with children with autism and cherished life.”

Learning about the man’s struggles following a car accident that left him without transportation, Koopman sprang into action without hesitation.

“I was touched by his positivity and outlook on life, and I wanted to do something to help him,” Koopman said.

Inspired by the man’s story, the officer launched a viral campaign on his social media platform, raising nearly $2,500 within 24 hours to help purchase a car for the man.

“This guy was making a difference,” Koopman said. “Not only was he walking several miles to work every day, but he was choosing to do it with a positive attitude and showing others that they can be happy too.”

But Officer Koopman’s heroism doesn’t end there. His genuine care for the wellbeing of the residents is seen through his interactions with the people living there. From engaging with the youth by playing ball in the streets to spreading positivity through visits to local schools with his K-9 partner, Koopman has inspired others to make a difference in their own lives and those around them.

“I think it’s important as a police officer to treat people how we want to be treated,” Koopman said. “We owe it to our community to help them and support them. At the end of the day, we all are human beings that are all trying to go through life, and we all want the same thing.”

However, the journey to heroism hasn’t been without challenges. Losing his first K-9 partner Harlej in the line of duty a few years ago, was a devastating blow to Koopman.

As Koopman and his K-9 closed in on a suspected drunk driver that day, Harlej signaled a promising scent trail. Koopman released Harlej to pursue, but the suspect vanished into the woods. Shortly afterward, a single gunshot

echoed through the silence.

“I think me and Harlej were put into that situation for a reason,” Koopman said.

“Even though Harlej didn’t make it that day, he saved a lot of lives, and a lot of guys were able to go home that night to their families. If anything, Harlej is the hero.”

After the tragic loss of Harlej, the community of Fishers pulled together to help Koopman buy his new partner, a Belgian Malinois named Rico.

“Because me and Harlej had done so many things for the community, people knew him,” Koopman said. “When that happened, the support of the police department and the support of the community was awesome.”

As Koopman continues his journey of service, whether it’s through protecting the streets as a K-9 officer or lending a helping hand to those in need, his commitment to making a positive difference has earned him the title of a hero.

“I don’t try to be a hero, I try to do the best that I can and help people in any way that I can,” Koopman said. “I think if everyone does the right thing, then everything else will take care of itself.”

UNITED STATES ARMY

AN AMERICAN HERO

First Sergeant for the United States Army

Stephanie Braden, A HERO in our community

In every community, there are heroes whose dedication and selflessness shape the lives of those around them.

Among these remarkable individuals stands First Sergeant in the 643rd HHC in Columbus, OH. Stephanie Braden, an example of service and leadership both within the military and the community she lives in.

Braden’s journey to becoming a hero is one marked by years of commitment and sacrifice.

A veteran of 21-years in the army reserves, Braden’s rise to the esteemed position is evidence of her desire to give back.

“Being entrusted with the care of soldiers is a great honor,” she shared. “The guidance I provide holds significant weight for them, and I take the responsibility seriously. It’s crucial in shaping the culture of our future soldiers, nurturing and motivating them to persevere.”

The mom of five oversees a unit of 147 soldiers, shouldering the weighty responsibility of their well-being and development.

But her role transcends military duties; it encompasses a profound commitment to the health and welfare of each soldier under her command.

“In my role as a first sergeant, it’s our duty to ensure the soldiers’ morale and well-being, encompassing everything from their mental health to their family’s welfare,” Braden explained. “We not only prepare them for combat readiness but also strive to cultivate resilience across all facets of their lives.”

From ensuring their medical readiness to supporting their mental well-being, Braden approaches her responsibilities with compassion and diligence.

“It’s truly gratifying to witness the growth of someone you’ve mentored since their youth, and to encounter them again eight years later, observing their progress,” she said. “It’s immensely rewarding to realize that you’ve played a role, no matter how small, in guiding them along their career path to where they stand today.”

Indeed, Braden’s roles as a military leader and then becoming a Registered Nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, created a force for good in her community and her home.

“Since both of my occupations involve serving others, my children witness firsthand the importance of giving back,” she explained. “This instills in them a desire to contribute as well. When you work in both the military and the medical field, you become aware of the multitude of lives you impact—you understand the influence you have over people during

some of their most vulnerable moments.”

Braden’s son, currently a Junior at Fishers High School, is following his mother’s path and will be attending West Point Military Academy to serve his country as well.

But Braden’s impact extends far beyond the confines of her military unit and workplace. She is an inspiration to all, embodying the values of service, sacrifice and selflessness. Whether she’s leading her soldiers or providing compassionate care to patients in the hospital, Sgt. Stephanie Braden exemplifies the essence of a true community hero.

PETER WALTS Cardiac Surgeon

ASCENSION ST. VINCENT HOSPITAL

HEALING HEARTS

St. Vincent Hospital Cardiac Surgeon Peter Walts, A HERO in our community

Dr. Peter Walts, a renowned cardiac surgeon at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital’s Heart Center, brings humanity to the field of medicine, healing hearts along the way.

From a young age, inspired by role models and mentors, he embarked on a personal calling to help people.

After completing medical school in 2004, Walts delved into the intricate world of cardiac surgery, honing his skills and expertise over two decades.

Despite the immense responsibility of holding someone’s life in his hands, the surgeon said he remains steadfast in his dedication to the profession.

“There’s an emotional side to being a surgeon,” he shared. “When patients face challenges in their health journey, I think it’s important to necessitate empathy and meaningful engagement with them. The stakes are high in this profession, and while that is always on my mind, the reward is knowing I can make a positive impact on my patients’ lives.”

For Walts, being a surgeon transcends the title of a hero; it’s about serving others and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

“This profession is filled with humility,” he explained. “While it’s deeply rewarding to witness a patient’s successful outcome, the anguish is magnified tenfold

when they don’t fare well. As a surgeon, I had to learn how to carry those experiences with me.”

He sees medicine as a constant learning journey, where each clinical scenario presents an opportunity to apply newfound knowledge and skills.

“What’s great about medicine is that it’s constant learning-even circling back to things you’ve learned before,” he said. “It’s a quest for knowledge and that’s the part that excites me.”

Despite the challenges, the most fulfilling aspect of his job is the ability to make a tangible difference in the lives of his patients.

“Utilizing my skills to help someone is the most gratifying aspect of being a surgeon,” Walts said. “Witnessing the positive transformation in their well-being, knowing that I played a role in enhancing their quality of life, is truly fulfilling.”

His approach to patient care goes beyond the operating room. He understands the importance of building trust and comfort with his patients, recognizing the intense nature of their relationship. Whether performing complex surgeries or performing a heart transplant, Walts said ensuring that his patients feel valued and supported every step of the way is one of the most important parts of his job.

“When I’m going to be operating on someone, I really become a part of the person’s life-I want them to feel comfortable in one of the most vulnerable moments of their life,” he said.

As a healer of hearts, Dr. Peter Walts is not only a skilled surgeon, he also has a genuine commitment to the patients he serves, just like a hero.

Utilizing my skills to help someone is the most gratifying aspect of being a surgeon.

Witnessing the positive transformation in their well-being, knowing that I played a role in enhancing their quality of life, is truly fulfilling.

EMPOWERING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

Principal at Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate Junior High School Jagga Rent, A HERO in our community

At the center of Fishers, stands Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate Junior High School, where Jagga Rent is not just a principal, but an inspiration for the entire community and its youth.

For Rent, being a principal is more than just a job—it’s a calling.

“Being a principal isn’t something I feel like I’ve chosen, it chose me,” he said.

“I love what I do and I feel blessed to be able to lead a school everyday and build good future citizens.”

With 14 years of experience as an administrator, he brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of the challenges facing both students and educators. But what truly sets this principal apart is his profound commitment to building meaningful relationships with his students, staff and parents.

“I feel like it’s critical as a principal to keep in touch with the kids,” Rent explained. “As much as my participation is good for the kids, it’s also good for me. It keeps me connected to the most meaningful part of my role, the students.”

As a mentor, Rent goes above and beyond to connect with his students. Whether he’s sponsoring clubs, popping into classrooms, or playing the drums during a performance with the school’s band, he ensures that no

student feels unseen or unheard.

But Rent’s impact extends far beyond the walls of the school. He actively engages with parents, forging partnerships that prioritize the well-being and success of every child.

“I wholeheartedly believe that education is a collaborative effort, requiring unity between home and school,” he said. “It takes a village mentality to continue to build the students up. The team effort between the parents, administrators and myself can make a significant impact on a child’s path in life.”

His collaboration with organizations like the nonprofit called Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI). which matches students with mentors, is another example of Rent’s dedication to the community.

“Serving as a board member for this organization has been so rewarding,” Rent shared. “I believe in the mission of YMI and am proud to be a small part of it. Anytime I can recruit mentors, I do it.”

Despite his humility, Rent’s impact resonates deeply with those who know him. His former student, now graduated, asked him to walk her down the aisle— this shows the lasting impression he leaves on those he guides.

For Rent, the true measure of success lies in seeing his students thrive as compassionate, responsible citizens.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Rent said. “I get chill bumps just talking about it. Seeing students succeeding as adults is so rewarding.”

As he navigates the demands of his role, Rent remains grounded by his family— his wife Finae and their three children, Jaelynne, Journie, and Jagga. This year is the first year one of Rent’s children have attended his school.

“I’ve always been everyone else’s principal,” he said. “Having my daughter with me this year has been the best year of my entire career. It’s been very special.”

In Jagga Rent, the community of Fishers has found not just a principal, but a hero whose dedication, empathy and passion for education are shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.

His story reminds us that true heroism lies in the everyday acts of kindness and compassion that uplift and inspire us all.

“I work with some really good people,” he said. “I had a lot of people that contributed to who I am and mentored me along the way. I don’t consider myself a hero. I look to others as my heroes.”
