LOCAL PROJECT COMMEMORATES - AND ILLUMINATES - VETERANS MEMORIAL BRIDGE OF WINAMAC

One hundred. Standing by itself, that’s a pretty big number. $100. To many, a lot of money. 100 feet. Either 50 humans or a relatively great distance. 100 miles. An even greater distance. Insert 100 into the setting of time and the number becomes huge. Imagine the passing of 100 years. Imagine the events of life that have passed in that span of 100 years.

History is the passing of time - nothing more, nothing less. The way time is utilized dictates the way history is and will be written. The Veterans Memorial Bridge of Winamac, or simply, to many, the swinging bridge, will turn 100 years old come July. Withstanding a century of time, the bridge has a stoic history of its own.

Construction of the bridge began in April of 1923. Local engineer R.E. Nutt designed a plan that would create a bridge well above the yearly flood waters of the Tippecanoe River. The bridge was assembled in sections, very similar to the Sears kit homes that were very popular at the time. While under construction, and with the Great War still fresh in the minds of many, the town’s representatives decided the bridge should be named the Veterans Memorial

Bridge to honor the soldiers and sailors from Pulaski County that served their country. Completed in July of the same year, the bridge connects the large and small sections of the town Park. Close to 40 acres provide an abundance of recreational activities along the riverfront.

Spanning the Tippecanoe River for a century, The bridge has been witness to more than most of us. World War War II. Sputnik. The Concorde. The United States putting a man on the moon. The Miracle on Ice. The fall of the Berlin Wall. September 11. Currently plans are underway to upgrade the bridge, and also celebrate its 100-year milestone of longevity.

What started out as a leisurely morning walk along the river turned into a threeyear project of hard work, dedication and commitment. Founders and chairpersons of the Memorial Swinging Bridge Project, Greg and Brenda Henry, have a vision for the bridge that includes illumination.

The Town of Winamac has been working diligently to complete repairs and upgrades to the bridge in time for its rededication and the completion of the project. Several art and landscaping projects by the Pulaski County Tribe further enhance this town landmark.

New decking has been installed, providing for a safe and sturdy walkway, concrete ramps at both entrances to the bridge will be improved, landscaping stone around the bases of the support pillars will assist with the dissipation of water, and colored lights installed will provide security as well as an element all its own - atmosphere. “The bridge is well-loved,” Brenda says. “Memories such as prom, unforgettable class photos and first kisses have all been shared here.”

Such an undertaking is no small task. The state, the county and individuals have all come together to see this project to fruition. Community organizations such as Kiwanis,

The American Legion, and the VFW have provided donations. Major contributions came from CreatINg Places (IHCDA), Carroll White REMC Operation Roundup and the Community Foundation of Pulaski County. Many local corporations donated funds as well, both as financial contributors and as sponsors during various fundraising events. The Buy-A-Light program was established. Individuals have contributed monetarily and physically. All of these endeavors make this truly a community effort. “It’s something to see this amazing project coming to an end,” Greg says.

Putting all of the fundraising efforts together, an accomplishment all its own, is the job of another local resident, Kathi Thompson. Thompson is also the designer of the website memorialswingingbridge. com, where one can find the history, how to donate, events and other information about the bridge.

you look at it. On July 3, to celebrate this historic milestone and rededication, a day of entertaining activities is planned. Event Coordinator Melanie Berger is tasked with this challenge. The Culver Military Naval Band will perform just as they did at the original dedication in 1923. Dignitaries will speak. Baseball will be played. The Historical Society will be on hand. Concession stands will be present to provide some good eats. In a nutshell, a day of fun, camaraderie and remembrance.

Two of the most memorable events of the day will be the rededication and lighting of the bridge. Around 7 p.m., the bridge will be dedicated to all veterans, past, present and future, of Pulaski County. After sunset, with anticipation suspended in the air, the lights of the bridge will be illuminated for the first time, bringing to a climax the devotion and emotions of the day for this three-year project. Truly a day to remember.

Any inquiries can be directed at Greg or Brenda Henry at 574-242-1031.

Finally, when you do get the opportunity to stroll across the bridge, be it at this

celebration or another time, stop in the middle. Put your hand on one of the suspension cables. Close your eyes. Feel the past...feel...the beyond.

INDIANA ROCKS!

POP AND ROCK STARS HAILING FROM THE HOOSIER STATE MAY SURPRISE YOU

In a recent edition of The Lakes Magazine, we explored the perhaps surprising array of legendary musicians in the jazz genre (not to mention a pioneering studio specializing in it) who hailed from Indiana. Along related lines, readers are likely familiar already with a few commonly known names --the likes of

Michael Jackson or John Mellencamp -- in the pop or rock genres who hail from the Hoosier state. But the longer list, which even then is certainly an incomplete one, might surprise you. Let’s take a look.

Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and the Jackson Five. As mentioned above, one of the best-known pop music sensations to originate in Indiana happens to have gotten its start

proximate to the Lakes Magazine’s readership area. Formed in Gary, Indiana in 1964 by family patriarch Joe Jackson, the Jackson Five signed with Motown Records in 1968 and released a string of hits including, “I’ll be There,” “ABC,” and “I Want You Back.” They even acknowledged their Hoosier roots with the song, “Goin’ Back to Indiana,” in 1971. Of course, several members of the group, whose popularity in their heyday was so great that they were the topic not only of television specials but the stars of their own animated series, went on to launch solo careers, most visibly the late Michael Jackson and sister Janet Jackson. The family’s modest childhood home still stands in Gary.

John Mellencamp. The rocker John Mellencamp was born in Seymour, Indiana in 1951 and attended Vincennes University, playing in various bands along the way. By the 1980s, Mellencamp, who had performed and recorded under the names Johnny Cougar and John Cougar Mellencamp (though he later retained only the name John Mellencamp

professionally), had a series of hits including “Small Town,” “Cherry Bomb,” and “Jack and Diane,” among many others. Mellencamp’s “roots rock” style and lyrical themes have reflected his Indiana upbringing, often concentrating upon rural, small town, and agricultural themes. This was also borne out in his work as a co-founder and continued supporter of the Farm Aid endeavor, which sought to raise awareness and funds relating to the plight of the American farmer.

Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin of Guns N’ Roses. Axl Rose (whose birth name was the far more pedestrian-sounding William Bruce Rose Jr.) and Izzy Stradlin (that is, Jeffrey Dean Isbell) were not only born in Lafayette, Indiana, but met while attending high school there, forming a partnership central to the early basis for the monster hitmaking band, though it got its start officially in Los Angeles. Formed in 1984, GNR went on to sell millions of records including the likes of “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Welcome to the Jungle.”

David Lee Roth. Indiana-based fans of 1980s music are finding plenty to celebrate by way of this list, and rock band Van Halen stalwart David Lee Roth ups the ante. Not only was Roth born in Bloomington, Indiana (though he mostly grew up in New Castle), but he credits some of the success of his best-known musical venture, with Van Halen, to the values of the Hoosier State. He told a New Castle radio station in 2019: “My grandparents moved to New Castle in 1913. It’s in the sense of humor,

the ‘get it done’ and how we do get it done approach work ethic of Van Halen, frankly. It’s a Midwest approach, not some flakey Hollywood horse manure.”

Roth saw great success, particularly in the 1980s, not only with Van Halen but as a solo artist in his own right.

Babyface. Born in Indianapolis, Kenneth Brian Edmonds was given his stage name, “Babyface,” by Parliament-Funkadelic legend Bootsy Collins due to Edmonds’ youthful appearance.

Working in the R&B genre, Babyface’s multi-Grammy and hit-making career has been marked more by his songwriting and production endeavors than his own solo work, and his track record is astounding. As a writer and producer Edmonds generated hits from the likes of TLC, Toni Braxton (with whom he won a Grammy award in 2014 for their duet album), Midnight Star, Pebbles, Bobby Brown, Usher, Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Eric Clapton. The Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds Highway in Indianapolis pays tribute to his legacy.

Mick Mars of Mötley Crüe. Born in Terre Haute as Bob Alan Deal, Mars contributes another Hoosier connection to ‘80s hitmaking bands, in this case heavy metal

legends Mötley Crüe. In fact, it was Mars, whose family by then had moved to Los Angeles, who suggested the band’s moniker to bandmates Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx, who, with the addition of lead singer Vince Neil, launched the group in 1981. Ranked as one of the greatest metal bands in history, the group saw 22 top 40 hits and six top 20 singles over the course of its career.

Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon. Like the aforementioned Guns N’ Roses cofounders, Richard Shannon Hoon was born in Lafayette, though he was raised in nearby Dayton, Indiana. In fact, once he made the move to Los Angeles and joined his bandmates to form Blind Melon in 1991, Hoon became friends with GNR lead Axl Rose and even sang backup vocals on some of the latter band’s recordings.

Blind Melon’s biggest hit came in 1993 with the single, “No Rain,” but tragedy struck less than two years later when, in 1995, Hoon died of a drug overdose at just 28

years old. He was buried in the cemetery in his hometown of Dayton, Indiana.

John Hiatt. Multiple Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Hiatt grew up in Indianapolis, honing his skills playing there in his early years, where he defied narrow genre labels by way of his proficiency in blues, folks, country, and eventually New Wave and rock styles. Hiatt had a notable recording career of his own but made considerable impact as a songwriter, penning classics like “Across the Borderline” (covered by the likes of Freddie Fender and Willie Nelson), “Riding with the King” (a double platinum song covered by Eric Clapton and B.B. King), and “Thing Called Love,” whose recording by Bonnie Raitt became a hit single in 1989.

COUNTRY, CLASSICAL, AND MORE

There have been a handful of musicians in the country genre to originate from Indiana, and a few have “crossed over” between the country and pop worlds, including:  Crystal Gayle. One of eight children

(including country star Loretta Lynn) from the mining town of Paintsville, Pennsylvania, Crystal Gayle’s family (she was born Brenda Gail Webb) moved during her childhood to Wabash, Indiana. In their new, more urban setting in Wabash, the family’s exposure to more diverse cultural groups impacted Gayle’s musical influences as well. In the 1970s, Gayle’s more strict country music took on more of a pop style, and 1977 saw her hit, “Don’t it Make Your Brown Eyes Blue” cross over into international hit status, the first of many of her songs to do so. In fact, in 1999 she paid musical tribute to another Hoosier legend, jazz composer Hoagy Carmichael, with an album of American and jazz standards.  In 2015, the Wabash County Historical Museum renamed its theater, The Crystal Gayle Theater, in honor of her local roots.

Rich Mullins. Hailing from Lynn, Indiana, in Randolph County, late contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Mullins’ music was hugely impactful in the that genre but reached well beyond it as well. Among his other compositions, “Awesome God” and “Sometimes by Step” became praise and worship standards and those and others of his songs were performed or recorded by virtually all the most notable musicians in the contemporary Christian world.

Adam Lambert. Hailing from Indianapolis, Lambert combined his classical and theatrical vocal training to undergird a musical career that has sold millions of records.

Joshua Bell. While not a rock musician, violinist Bell, from Bloomington, has collaborated with an array of musicians and made a variety of television and movie

appearances (both in front of the camera and in soundtrack recordings) to become one of the most recognizable and popular musicians in his field.

HONORABLE MENTION:

Bill Monroe. Kentucky-born Monroe moved to Indiana in his teens and went on to become arguably the most recognizable name in the bluegrass genre. Perhaps most notable for Hoosiers, the bluegrass festival he founded

in 1967 in Bean Blossom, Indiana (today the annual Bill Monroe Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival) has become one of the premiere festivals of its kind in the world, drawing thousands to the small Indiana town each year.

ROSA’S RETRO EVENTS IN NORTH JUDSON BRINGS THE FUN FOR ALL AGES

It’s fitting that a family-oriented entertainment center should also be owned and operated as a family business. That’s the vibe that Kathy Holem, the owner of Rosa’s Retro Events, wanted all along.

“It is a family venture,” Holem says. “All of my kids have invested time into this project. My son, Kyle, painted all the bricks for the mini golf, and Sam and Nathan help in the pizzeria and make deliveries. Megan was the original creator of the Mystery! Escape Room concept. Lizzy is an amazing party attendant for our private events and helps in the

pizzeria on occasion. My husband usually is doing the behind-thescenes stuff like framing up walls or driving to some crazy location to pick up a must-have arcade game.”

Rosa’s Retro Events has been open for three years. In that time, Holem has continued to add new things to do, and keep things fresh for the families that come to spend time together playing blacklight golf, trying out the escape room experience, or simply enjoying pizza together and talking about their days.

“We continue to add and change things that people want,” she says.

Dayna, Manager, with Kali, Sam and Lizzy

“Some things work, and others don’t. We continue to evolve so we don’t go extinct!”

Finding something for everyone is a daunting task and one of the challenges Holem faces in keeping Rosa’s fresh. Like many entertainment-focused businesses, it’s sometimes difficult to motivate people to get out of their houses and off their phones to have fun together, she says.

“People are content to sit at home on their phones,” she says. “I just want to pry the phones out of everyone’s hands and make them realize what a great time they are missing!”

available, I just knew it could be transformed into something people could enjoy.”

Those “somethings” have turned out to be immensely popular for many area families. The murder mystery dinners which are scheduled in the fall are “an absolute riot,” Holem says. This event includes dinner and drinks.

Rosa’s Retro Escape Room, called Granny’s Mystery Escape, was Holem’s oldest daughter’s idea. Cost per person is kept affordable and the clues are changed every season. This means

people can come back often and partake in the challenge.

“We have also done them for school groups and the clues were relevant to what they were learning in class,” she says.

In addition to the events hosted by Holem and her team, space is also available for rent. Rosa’s has been the site for weddings, bridal and baby showers, and children’s parties among other occasions. There have also been comedy shows, murder mystery dinners, daddy and daughter dances, and themed buffet nights.

One event that occurred recently was a wedding during the Christmas holiday in which all partygoers wore Christmasthemed pajamas.

“This family was so much fun, and it was a blast,” Holem says. Homan also opens space to serve local families who are facing one of the most difficult times in their lives - the death of a loved one. Holem does not charge for the use of the facilities for bereavement luncheons, funeral dinners or celebration-oflife gatherings.

“I don’t really do this for the money,” she says. “I do this because I love my town. I have been blessed beyond measure in so many ways, and if this space can be a blessing to someone that would make my heart happy.”

While family togetherness has been the goal of Holem’s business, Rosa’s is for everyone. An adults-only evening is planned for July. Called BARCADIUM, the event is open to those 18 or older and will feature live bands, karaoke, a beer garden and access to the arcade and mini golf.

The hours for Pizzeria and Fun Center are Wednesday through Saturday 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Holem says the business stays open later during the summer. Rosa’s is located at 204 Lane Street in North Judson. Rochester Boat Company Keeps Locals Equipped and Ready for the Water

Hitting the water of Lake Manitou is a seasonal pastime for many. This engineered lake has a legacy in history and has been a place to enjoy for nearly two centuries. The folks at Rochester

Boat Company (RBC) endeavor to keep today’s lake lovers happily on the water.

“Lake Manitou is an all-sports lake, meaning that there is fishing, pontooning, skiing, surfboarding, wakeboarding, sail boating, kayaking, canoeing and jetskiing,” says Lisa Reffett, co-owner of

Rochester Boat Company. She and her husband, Shane, started the business in 2009, adding additional services to the original pier, dock and boat-lift services.

A lake that serves as many water sports as Manitou requires finding the right boat for the sport. Whether that calls for a speedboat or run-about, which are designed for skiing, a wake boat for that ultimate wakeboard or surfboarding experience, fishing boats to give anglers the upper hand in the many fishing tournaments on the lake, or the everpopular pontoons for cruising.

Back: Sebastian Lackey, Tom Alexander, Chad Scobie, Bryce Abbott, Jordan Bradley, Dawson Bower Middle: Shawn Fultz, Kim Spoor Front: Myron Sink, Jim Wheadon, Mark Tyler, Jack Reffett, Lisa Reffett, Shane Reffett

“The pontoons of today are not like yesteryear’s pontoons that were floating platforms with small motors that would idle around the lake for sightseeing,” Reffett says. “Today’s pontoons are larger with comfortable seating and maneuverability, with high-horsepower motors that will go fast enough to pull a tube or a skier.”

The original pontoon design uses two long floatation tubes. A recent change to pontoon design is the introduction of the tritoons, which have three long flotation tubes. This design change allows the boat to sit higher out of the water and have more maneuverability, Reffett says.

“Pontoons of today can offer the flexibility of going fast to pull a skier or tube, being a platform to hold more people for sightseeing or being very stable for fishing,” she says. “At Rochester Boat Company, we sell new Crest pontoons that are for sightseeing, tubing, or a

model called the Fish especially set up for fishing.”

According to the owners, Rochester Boat Company is also the only new boat dealer in Fulton County. The company sells Crest pontoons and tritoons along with Suzuki and Mercury motors, and

is authorized by the original equipment manufacturers to sell these brands.

The authorization process is based on the company getting their workers certified by the manufacturers to work on their products, insurance bonding, and having an Indiana dealer’s license, Reffett says.

It also allows the company to guarantee warranties of their products.

“We also have a wide selection of used lifts and boats,” Reffett says.

Although RBC has several models of boats to choose from, the company

is there for the long haul of boat ownership. From routine maintenance to winterization, detailing and storage, the Reffetts make sure boat owners don’t need to look elsewhere to take care of their boats. And the same applies to the maintenance and care of lifts and canopies.

“Rochester Boat Company is a one-stop shop,” Reffett says. “RBC can not only sell you a pontoon and motor, but we can put it in the water and take it out to store with us in any of our storage facilities.”

Keeping a boat showroom fresh is the work of RBC’s dedicated detailing shop that uses a commercial, wall-mounted hot-water power sprayer. Boats and motors can be power washed and then waxed. Interiors are power washed with specialized cleansers and the vinyl on seats are thoroughly cleaned and conditioned.

RBC will also come to the customer for repairs of lifts and piers. Boat motor work is only done in the shop, however.

“Rochester Boat Company has a large number of mobile units including our fleet of barges that allow for transport of small equipment for lakeside work,” Reffett says.

Their fork-style pair of elite barges allow lift and pier installation, removal and repair. The company also maintains a fully stocked van and a multitude of trailers that can go to the many different lakes in the 100-mile radius of Rochester that RBC serves.

“If possible, RBC can repair lifts and piers on site,” Reffett says.

RBC sells and services Shore Station lifts and Shore Dock piers, Lake Shore products, Ryco lifts, and Dock Deck by Trust Corporation (formerly Brock Dock). Dock Deck comes in a variety of colors.

“Rochester Boat Company is one of only four dealerships to be authorized in northern Indiana to sell Dock Deck,” Reffett says.

Rochester Boat Company is committed to providing what the lake community

needs to fully enjoy life on the water. It is a family business run by a family who grew up on the lake, and who still enjoy spending time on the water and with each other.

Shane grew up in Rochester and worked at Smitty’s Marina. He was an engineer with Navistar. Lisa grew up in California, but she often visited her grandparents and later her aunt and uncles at their house on Treasure Island. Those memories and that family bond ensure that the Reffetts care about giving other families the opportunity to have similar experiences.

Rochester Boat Company is located at 410 North State Road 25 in Rochester. For service or more information, call 574-223-2675 or email RochesterBoats@ aol.com. Visit their website at rochesterboatcompany.com, and find the company on Facebook and YouTube.

Quite a Twist

JoJo’s Pretzels is the true definition of a family business. When Owner Levi King opened the doors in Shipshewana in 1989, he knew he wanted to change the pretzel industry, and that is exactly what he did. The name comes from his wife, Joanna, better known as JoJo, who also

owns and operates the business to this day. Together, with their family, they have successfully run the most popular pretzel company in the area.

The business began inside the Davis Mercantile building and the Kings would frequently attend local fairs and festivals with their pretzel wagon. As their

reputation grew, so did the demand for more hands to help bake fresh pretzels on the daily. Fast-forward to today and you will find their children and their spouses playing a huge role in keeping things running steadily.

However, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for JoJo’s Pretzels. In 2004 their

location inside the Davis Mercantile was destroyed by a fire. The King family did not let that stop them from continuing to pursue their dreams. With the community rallying behind them and the drive to keep going, the JoJo’s team reopened in 2006 inside the new Davis Mercantile building. When the reopening day finally came, they recall it as a moment they will never take for granted.

What kept the customers coming back, and continues to keep them coming back, is, of course, the delicious, buttery pretzels.

“The top-selling item is for sure the original pretzel with salt and butter, paired with our homemade cheddar cheese,” says Mariah Contreras, the daughter of Levi and Joanna. “And, of course, served with an ice-cold Coke.”

The famous recipe was created with their Amish roots and homegrown lifestyle at

the core. As you walk in the doors you’ll find a fun, upbeat environment full of people having a bite to eat and enjoying each other’s company. The atmosphere is friendly and loving, with tables full of smiling faces ranging in age from young to old.

The walls are lined with nostalgic signage, like the Coca-Cola Bottling Company sign. There is plenty of seating in the bright-red booths that go along with the red paint covering the walls. As soon as you walk in, you will get a whiff of the pretzels and other delicious items being freshly baked. The vibe reminds you of taking a trip down memory lane. The setting is rustic, like a ’50s diner, but also has the feeling of Amish country, with wooden beams and ceilings. Take a look around and you will find plenty of unique, old-time metal signs decorating the walls.

When you approach the counter to order, you will be greeted with giant smiles from the JoJo’s Pretzels team. If you are a regular customer, you likely know what your go-to favorite is. If not, they are glad to explain the options to you and help you make a choice.

Besides the famous butter-and-salt pretzel, you can choose from a variety of delicious pretzel flavors. Some of the fan favorites include cinnamon and sugar, parmesan, garlic, sour cream and onion, dill pickle, and whole wheat. You can buy them individually, or treat your friends and family to a half dozen or dozen. The shop has plenty of dips to pair with your pretzel like Amish peanut butter, icing, cream cheese, pizza sauce, Nutella, and cream cheese. If you are looking for a gluten-free pretzel option, they are happy to accommodate. You can also get an order of pretzel bites sprinkled with your favorite topping.

Perhaps you are hungry for more than just a pretzel. JoJo’s offers scrumptious meals as well. When browsing the menu you will find sandwiches such as the chicken-salad croissant, cranberry and pecan chicken, smoked chicken croissant, all-beef hot dog, and all-beef chili dog. They also offer daily homemade chili and the soup of the day in a cup or a bowl.

THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JUNE 2023 / TownePost.com

Don’t forget to add an ice-cold beverage to your order. JoJo’s is known for their bottled Coca-Cola, but there are plenty of others to pick from. You can order a small, medium or large drink like root beer, sweet tea, unsweet tea, Sprite, lemonade and raspberry tea. If you want to enhance it a bit, try adding a flavoring such as cherry, vanilla, green river or blue raspberry.

Once you finish your pretzel or meal you can choose from one of their delicious desserts. Some of the popular items are the vanilla ice cream, or the flavor of the month, served in a cup or cone. Their vanilla sundaes are a hit among customers and you can add toppings like chocolate, Oreos, strawberries, caramel, Reese’s and whipped cream. No matter what you choose at JoJo’s you are sure to leave satisfied and happy.

The King family has always been generous in giving back to the community with

their kindness, support and, of course, pretzels. JoJo’s is also very involved with educating students about their business and teaching them the process of hand-rolling a fresh pretzel. The company offers field trips where visitors will learn the story of JoJo’s Pretzels in a unique setting. If you are not a student but still want to learn the art of pretzel making, you can schedule a group event with sizes ranging from 10 to 30 people. For only $6 per adult, you will receive a small soft drink or coffee, pretzel, cheese dip, and the full story and experience.

The King family has served guests from all over the world and don’t have any plans to slow down. As the children begin to take on larger roles in the business, they say passing on their mom and dad’s legacy is one of the most rewarding things to see. The Kings’ daughter, Mariah, and son, Jaimeson, have big plans to officially take over the business one day.

If you are not in the Shipshewana area, you can find their second location in downtown Goshen. They offer the same delicious menu items in a smaller, yet similar, building. Next time you are looking for a quick bite to eat, make a trip to JoJo’s.

PANNING OUT

ENJOY THE MANY FLAVOR POSSIBILITIES OF HOMEMADE PIZZA

Pizza is one of the most popular foods in the world. It’s a fun and fast food, and a versatile meal in itself - breakfast, lunch, supper, and even dessert.

Let’s start with a little history on this wonderful food. In the early 1800s pizza started off as a flatbread in the poor section of Naples, Italy. Locals needed cheap food that they could eat quickly, due to their lifestyle.

So how did pizza become famous in the United States? The first licensed U.S. pizzeria opened in 1905 in New York City, at Lombardi’s in Manhattan. Up until the late 1940s, pizza

was mostly enjoyed by those of Italian heritage. However, the American GIs returning from World War II changed all of that.

Now, on to exploring a few different types of pizza.

You’ve heard of margherita pizza, yes? Well, according to legend it was named after Queen Margherita herself.

In the late 1800s the queen was visiting Naples, and Chef Raffaele Esposito and his wife wanted to create a masterpiece of a pizza for her.

Looking like the Italian flag, it was a simple yet lovely pie of tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil.

What about pepperoni? The fact is that Italians frown upon pepperoni, and you’ll never find it as a topping in the country. The rapid growth of

Domino’s pizza, combined with the popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, firmly positioned pepperoni as a favorite pizza topping.

Thinking outside of traditional pizza, you can basically put anything on it. How about a steak and eggs pizza? Or a peanut butter, banana and bacon pizza, drizzled with honey? I even put broccoli on my

pie one night (I won’t do that again though).

Toppings are the easy part. Now let’s talk about the dough. On second thought, no - I’m not going to talk about the dough.

I’m just going to suggest that you go online to research your favorite style of crust, or go to the library and check out a

few pizza books. My family is gluten free, and I’m still searching for that perfect gluten-free crust to make. With that said, I cannot offer any suggestions or strategies when it comes to dough.

I will, however, offer a lovely cooked tomato sauce recipe that I found in “The United States of Pizza” by Craig Priebe:

• 1 tbsp. extra virgin oil

• 2 clovets garlic, minced

• ½ tsp. dried basil

• ½ tsp. dried oregano

• ¼ tsp. dried thyme

• 1 tsp. salt

• ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper

• 1 cup pureed tomatoes (or sauce)

• 2 tbsp. tomato paste

(Don’t forget, we sell all these wonderful spices at New Kitchen Store.)

Your Maternity Oasis

Heat olive oil and garlic over medium heat for 30 seconds. Add the spices and cook for 30 more seconds, stirring continuously. Add the tomato puree and paste. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This makes one cup, which is enough for one 14” or 16” pizza.

At New Kitchen store, we carry all your pizza needs including spices, sauces, garlic press tools, pizza peels, stone, and different elements for your pizza pan.

How about cooking your pizza in/on cast iron? We carry a fine selection of Lodge products at our store. Thinking of putting a wood-fired pizza unit in your backyard? We have the tools for that as well.

By the way, we have moved. Please come and see us at our new, bigger location at 1100 Roosevelt Road in Walkerton. Call us at 574-586-2745, and visit newkitchenstore.com.

Our farmer’s market is in full swing now as well, on Thursday afternoons from 4 p.m. until 7 pm. You can stop by and shop, or set up a table. There is no cost - it just has to be homemade or homegrown.

TYLER ROAD HARNESS

A WIDE VARIETY OF ITEMS

When Mark Borkholder, owner of Tyler Road Harness, 11541 Tyler Road, Bremen, Indiana, says he has a wide variety of horse harnesses and leather goods, he isn’t kidding.

“I do get a lot of people telling me they love all of the different items that we have to offer,” Borkholder says. “I appreciate that, and I make sure they get the best items they can. I spend time with our customers to make sure we find out exactly what they want.” Borkholder has a motto he loves and adheres to.

“I tell people that we offer ‘stitching and hitching to your specifications,’” he says. “We make sure everyone that buys something from us is completely satisfied. We want to keep going in the right direction from repeat business.”

Tyler Road Harness began as a business that offered just one item but grew to offer a multitude of products.

“We started as a horse harness business

only,” Borkholder says. “We eventually decided to offer more items such as motorcycle accessories and custom and production canvas products. It was a good move.”

Borkholder says customers have commented that they like the friendly

service as well.

“I have received comments from people that have said they enjoy buying things from us,” he says. “They also like the craftsmanship of their custom-made items.”

Borkholder doesn’t stock a lot of merchandise at his business, but he does have some items available.

“I have some knife and hatchet sheaves and wallets, and things like that,” he says.

Borkholder also makes belts, saddle bags, billfolds, and gun holsters.

“I have had customers tell me they like the money clips, checkbook covers and billfolds,” he says. “Customers give me a print of the item they want or need made, and I start prototyping. PRO GLO SKINCARE AIMS FOR BEAUTY THROUGH AND THROUGH

Pro Glo Skincare reflects Owner Chloe Boor’s passion for beauty and wellness from the inside out. After a short stint living and working in Colorado, Boor recently came home again to Indiana. She brought back up-to-date knowledge and renewed excitement. Her goal for Pro Glo Skincare is to make each client feel special, relaxed and cared for.

Boor started her career as a makeup artist, but soon trained to be an esthetician. Estheticians are skin-care therapists and facial specialists who clean, beautify and maintain the face and skin. In addition, Boor is also an educator who works at Indiana Wellness College, a nationally accredited institution that offers not only an esthetics program, but also sports and medical massage training.

“At 16 I was doing my friends’ makeup for prom and other special events,” Boor says. “When I trained to get my makeup artist license, I realized I loved it all. I opened up to the industry as a whole.”

As an alumnus, Boor became a member of the instructional staff at Summit Salon Academy in Anderson. Then, in 2021 she moved to Denver where she was a full-time educator at the Aveda Institute. She also worked in a local salon as an esthetician. Her experience there made a huge impact.

“I stumbled upon Alchemy Face Bar, and it reignited my passion for being hands-on and not just teaching,” she says. “The environment let clients’ worries fall to the side as they relaxed. I learned about different modalities and methods. It made me a better teacher. I saw the industry booming. Everyone has a different flair, focus and vision of what they want to come to fruition. I realized I could curate an experience for my clients the way I wanted.”

After returning to Indiana, Boor secured her current esthetics teaching position. She opened Pro Glo Skincare at the end of February after finding the site for her new business on Facebook. The building had formerly been used for cold storage. A few other

salon professionals were already renting spaces, including one of Boor’s former students.

“I grew up in Kokomo and really didn’t know too much about Rochester until my mom moved here eight years ago to be on the lake,” she says. “She has built a community of friends who are good people. They are so kind, welcoming, and have always supported me as my career evolved.”

The salon’s menu of services offers a full range of skin-care options,

from a basic, 30-minute cleansing facial for $45 to a $95 one-hour signature facial customized to meet specific client needs. Both include exfoliation, treatment mask and dermal layering. Chemical peels and dermaplaning are also available. Other offerings include waxing from small areas such as armpits to full body. Brazilian and bikini waxing are included.

“Clients can realize their goals for perfect brows and eyelashes,” Boor says. “I do lash tinting and lifting. The lifting is like a gentle perm for an eyelash. It molds it into a curl.”

“One of my favorite treatments is facial cupping,” she continues. “It’s a process where a small silicon device that is a skin-safe, smooth-edged suction cup glides over the face. It pulls up and almost seems to turn wrinkles inside out. It has a smoothing effect and refines the skin, giving it a glow as a result of increased circulation.”

Boor explains that facial massages are an important part of the esthetician industry. Facials have a plumping effect, and restore collagen as well as elasticity by increasing circulation. Skin cells

need oxygen to reproduce and thrive. Lymphatic drainage needs to be stimulated to eliminate puffiness and swelling.

“Skin wellness starts from the inside out at any age,” Boor says. “For younger skin that is prone to acne, people should pay attention to what they are putting into their body. Are they eating processed food or a lot of sugar? Skin is an organ and the largest one we have.”

“After COVID, there has been a shift to clean beauty,” she adds. “When people were trapped inside, there was more time to focus

on skin. The beauty industry has stepped away from glamour and more toward fresh and clean, including a holistic aspect of wellness.”

Boor shares that the most important step people can take for their skin in the summer is to find a good sunscreen specifically made for faces. Pores on the face are different in size and structure than those of the body. She cautions that sunscreen should be mineral based, not chemical based, in order to be non-comedogenic so as not to clog the pores.

“I teach three days a week and I’m in the studio two or three days a week,” Boor says. “I enjoy both. I love my students’ appreciation of beauty and the desire to connect with people. My goal as an independent esthetician is to offer genuine care that enables my clients to feel great about themselves.”

SLEEK SHINE AUTO DETAIL GOES THE EXTRA MILE

Writer / Matt Keating

Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

Adam Gray, owner of Sleek Shine Auto Detail in Knox, says he will go the extra mile to make sure your vehicle looks as good as it possibly can when he is finished detailing it.

“I tell people that I treat everyone’s car like my own.” Gray says. “I have been to auto detailing businesses where I left being very unsatisfied with the work they did. If you are spending your money to get work done on your car, you want to be able to look at it and be happy with it. I make sure my customers are happy with my work.”

Gray started the business two years ago after several people told him he was great at detailing cars. “I took that as a very big compliment and thought I might be able to do this for a living,” Gray says. “I was glad I decided to take that chance, and it has

Gray does detail work on cars, trucks, SUVs, golf carts, combines and boats, among other vehicles.

the winter, and now they are ready to get out and enjoy their motor homes, cars and boats as much as they can,” Gray says. “They want them to look as good as they can, and that’s where I come in. I’ve been busy, but that’s a nice problem to have. I just got done working on a 35-foot boat.”

Gray notes that his prices are very reasonable. “Everyone is

struggling financially these days and our prices range from $75 to $400, depending on what our customers are having detailed,” Gray says. “Our prices are very fair. Customers have told me they really appreciate that. We can do a full detail on a vehicle, inside and out, for $150. I encourage new business. Just give me a call and make an appointment.”

Gray loves being busy and working outside.

“I previously worked as a chief detective for the Starke County Police Department, and after I retired I also thought the detailing business would be great for me,” he says. “I already enjoyed the work anyway, so why not do it more and make some money as well? It’s relaxing. I also like being my own boss.”

Gray is enjoying the amount of work he has been getting. “We are really growing,” he says. “I have a couple of part-timers helping me, and I will probably be hiring some full-time people soon.”

Gray adds that he can do work on storm-damaged vehicles. “If you have scratches on your car from a storm or something else, give me a call,” he says. “I give free estimates on buffing them out. If the scratches are through the clear coat, I can’t help, but I can get out any minor scratches. I will also return the car washed and shined.”

Sleek Shine Auto Detail also does work on motorcycles.

“I really enjoy working on motorcycles and I have had a lot of people tell me they really like the work I did on their bikes,” Gray says. “I also do work on combines and have done some work for combine dealerships. I can work on pulleys and belts, which can

get very dirty. I tell people I can have those looking good too.”

Gray starts his day at 9 a.m. and works until the job is done.

“I can sometimes be done by 4 p.m., and then there are other days when I will work until late at night,” he says. “I can pick up a customer’s car, and take it back to my house and work on it while they watch TV. I have their car ready for them when they go to work in the morning.”

Gray enjoys spending time with his family and says he has made his business a family activity.

“My wife, Micheala, has been very supportive of me with the business, and my three sons really love working with me,” he says. “My oldest son, Braxton, 9, my middle son, Hunter, 9, and my youngest son, Armani, 6, all love working with me. They do a great job and really pay attention to what they are doing. I take them out for doughnuts, or also McDonald’s for lunch for their hard work. It’s a great feeling to be able to work and spend time with your family at the same time.”

LOCAL COUPLE IS RENOVATING AKRON TRAIN DEPOT INTO A COFFEEHOUSE ESTABLISHMENT

As far as rural northern Indiana communities are concerned, there might be few more welcoming and more fascinating to behold than the small town of Akron.

The enchantment of the place captivates a traveler all along the approach, with the full blooms of springtime trees and flowers, and magnificent historic buildings lovingly maintained. Upon

arriving to the center of the town square, it’s there, sitting like the crown jewel that it is. The small, modest structure is a particular source of pride for the residents, built 140 years ago to serve the long-ago train traffic of the Erie Railroad.

It’s the little depot with a very big purpose, and it truly represents the past, present and future of Akron, Indiana.

Lori Tilden-Geiger is a lifelong resident of Akron, and she has aligned with her husband, DeLynn Geiger, to reimagine

the depot as a prospective place for their new establishment, known as The Grounded Coffee House. The couple is perfectly suited to oversee this multifaceted project, one that has been a long time in the making, and one that evokes poignant, treasured memories for Tilden-Geiger.

The current site of the Erie Railroad depot is now at the convergence of State Road 14 and State Road 19. It’s an intersection that has seen many business and events across the generations. Tilden-Geiger explains that the property once held an opera house, followed by a pair of drugstores, one of which she worked for as a teenager. Fittingly enough, she often served coffee to the patrons. And although the last vestiges of the old building came down in 2017, the corner still served as an ideal spot for community gatherings.

Realizing that an opportunity was arising to merge their passions into one common mission, the couple began to envision a plan to relocate the depot to the heart of the town. Meanwhile, they began working on unveiling The Grounded Coffee House, currently situated at 111 West Rochester Street, just yards from the new resting place for the depot. And when the townsfolk learned of what the duo had in mind, they were more than proud and pleased to answer the call to help.

While the final details were being finessed within the cozy niche for The Grounded Coffee House, a strategy was also being mapped out, quite literally, to move the depot from its original location along Front Street to the center of town. Last

spring, after acquiring the depot and the downtown lot, the couple recruited a professional contractor that had expertise in moving structures. In a fascinating endeavor that drew spectators from all around Fulton County, the depot was carefully, painstakingly routed through the downtown corridor on a large, motorized dolly maneuvered via remote control. The process went so smoothly, Tilden-Geiger recalls, that a glass bottle perched on the ledge of an interior ticket booth remained unbroken throughout the duration of the move. Meanwhile, the ambience of The Grounded Coffee House was flourishing and thriving, with its sumptuous range of gourmet coffees and handcrafted sweets.

Moreover, the atmosphere was beckoning to guests seeking an intimate setting that radiated hospitality and fellowshipsomething that sometimes seems lost in a seemingly hectic world.

Akron train Depot when in operation.

As Tilden-Geiger walks through the spartan depot facility, she begins musing aloud about what she hopes to see happening in the coming months. One of the first things that was done to maximize space and offer stability for the depot structure was the addition of a basement.

Much of the original interior remains intact, although weathered, and it will likely need extensive renovations before it can serve as the rustic setting for The Grounded Coffee House. The charm of the building is still very much evident at every turn, from primitive woodwork and detailing to the ticket window to ceramic doorknobs.

The scope of the revitalization project will become clearer in the coming weeks, as the Akron town leaders await word on whether they will be granted the designation on the National Register of Historic Places. With the assistance of a distinguished northern Indiana historian Kurt Garner, the entire downtown sector of Akron is currently being assessed for this distinction, and if the nomination is accepted, there will be nearly 100 homes and businesses encompassed in the district. Inclusion on the National Register means the depot project will be eligible for a variety of grants to assist with financing.

While the Erie Depot awaits its beautification and completion, guests are warmly invited to visit The Grounded Coffee House at 111 West Rochester Street in downtown Akron, Indiana. Check out their Facebook page for updates, photos and information on future events.

7TH INDIANA LIGHT ARTILLERY REENACTS CIVIL WAR BATTLES

A brief glance through the pages of any reputable chronicle of our nation’s evolution will reveal one integral chapter.

The tales are there to be told and remembered about a time when America was battling a war within its own borders. It was truly a country divided, when folks were deeply polarized and divergent in their beliefs. Young men, some barely grown beyond their teenage years, were sent to battles, and came home scarred and profoundly changed. That is, if they ever came home at all.

And while we cannot go back in time and witness those integral events firsthand, there is a local organization that strives to educate and enlighten on this era of our country, one that remains compelling more than 150 years after its conclusion. This gathering of comrades is known as the 7th Indiana Light Artillery, a group of local historians committed to the portrayal and retelling of the Civil War.

These individuals willingly volunteer their time in assuming the roles of soldiers, wearing authentic uniforms and fully embracing the lifestyles of the time period.

exceptionally busy as of late, joining forces with the soldiers from the 21st Indiana Light Artillery to present the third annual Civil War reenactment event in Nappanee. This gathering has grown substantially from its inception in 2021, and expectations are high for this year’s spectacle, which is taking place over the weekend of June 10 and 11 on the show grounds of Nappanee Power from the Past. It is situated just north of The Barns at Nappanee.

In the tradition of past events, the reenactment will be a representation of a particular battle. For the 2023 Nappanee Civil War Days, the emphasis will be on the Battle of Shiloh. Over the past several months, several nationally renowned reenactors have answered the recruitment call for this prestigious showcase.

Representatives from both Confederate and Union divisions will be on hand, some opting to take part
