Road Trip May 7th - June 20th 2017

A photographic catalog of significant moments and memories from our road trip. Featuring photo’s from the following National Parks: Badlands National Park Yellowstone National Park Glacier National Park Olympic National Park Redwoods National Park Yosemite National Park Sequoia National Park Death Valley National Park Zion National Park Grand Canyon National Park Bryce National Park Capitol Reef National Park Arches National Park Kings Canyon National Park Rocky Mountain National Park

[The Beginning] How the trip materialized

At the start of the final semester of graduate school (Master’s Degree in Architecture) at Wentworth Institute of Technology, we quickly realized how important it would be for us to distance ourselves from architecture upon graduation. With years of pent up stress and countless hours of hard work, we decided that a cross country road trip would be the perfect remedy for our overworked and overtired minds. We began formulating plans as early as January of 2017, steadily becoming more convinced about the feasibility of the trip. Throughout the spring semester, we used the road trip as motivation to push through strenuous obstacles that always seemed to arise. After both receiving design excellence awards and graduating with distinguishment, we felt overwhelmingly gratified and validated in making our plans to travel for six weeks. The following images will illuminate some of the amazing experiences we had while on our trip.

1.0 Massachusetts [Boston] We were fortunate enough to call Boston a home for over 5 years over the course of our undergraduate and graduate terms. It is in Boston where we initiated our journey, and where we have made countless memories.

2.0 Ontario [Kingston] A 5 hour drive northwest from Boston landed us in Kingston, Ontario for the first night away from home. After checking into Confederation Place Hotel along the Confederation Basin Marina, we took a walk to the local City Hall followed by dinner at “The Works (burger joint) and a boat ride to Wolfe Island.

The highly reflective facade of the Royal Bank Plaza buildings was incredibly captivating because of its crystal clear display of the adjacent buildings and cloud-laced sky.

The junction point between two different segments of the Royal Bank; transforming from a light and airy glass highrise to a darker, heavier, and more grounded lowrise building.

An intriguing pilsner brewery in a historic brick railway roundhouse caught our eye as we passed by the CN Tower, the Air Canada Centre, The Rogers Center, Union Station, and Ripley’s Aquarium.

[Toronto] After one night of relaxing in Kingston we continued to drive southwest on route 401 along Lake Ontario and into Toronto where we met up with Jonah’s aunt, uncle and cousin. We spent the afternoon within the inner city, primarily in the Old Toronto District near the St. Lawrence Market. Following the sightseeing in the area, we proceeded to drive northwest to spend the night with Jonah’s cousin Tim and wife Vivian along the outskirts of the city.

3.0 Illinois [Chicago] The following day we left early and continued southwest on 401 through the border passed Detroit and into Chicago. In the city, we were able to see notable landmarks such as the DuSable Bridge, the Tribune Tower, the WIllis Tower, Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio and the Chicago River Channel. We enjoyed delicious specialty pressed Cuban sandwiches (guava-q pork sandwich with mandarin orange) and the best pizza either of us had ever had in our entire life at Pequod’s Deepdish Pizza. On our second night, there was a deluge of rain, forcing us indoors for a hilarious improv comedy show in Lakeview until late in the evening.

4.0 Minnesota [Minneapolis] After a brief stop in Madison, Wisconsin to shop at famed cheese shop Fromagination and a Russian dumpling shop (Paul’s Pelmini’s) for lunch we hightiailed it to Minneapolis to stay a couple nights with Jonah’s sister Fiona, husband John, and adorable shiba inu puppy Archer. In the city, we were able to visit Jonah’s co-op firm office (CTA Architects) where we visited for a while to see the mural that she had designed and painted a summer earlier. Food wise, we ate incredible meals at Burch Steakhouse; escargot, wild mushrooms, sorrel butter and domestic wagyu bavette steak, World Street Kitchen; MFC Biscuit sandwich with caramelized brussel sprouts cooked in a thai fish sauce dressing, red onions, toasted rice powder and aromatic herbs, and in Fiona’s kitchen; mushroom swiss burger’s with salad. The great company had us feeling energized and excited for the next leg of our journey with Fiona through the Badlands, Yellowstone and into Bozeman Montana.

South Dakota

5.0 South Dakota [Wall] After an early departure from John and Fiona’s apartment, we made our way southwest to Wall, SD into Badlands National Park. Upon entering the park, we proceeded to open the sunroof and stick our heads out as we twisted through the rock formations on either side of the road while listening to the Borderlands soundtrack. Later in the evening as the sun was setting, we were awestruck by the amazing assortment of wildlife we were able to see in the span of an hour. There was a once in a lifetime experience as we were driving on the dirt road enroute to Sage Creek Campground when we were approaching the crest of a meadow. We saw the expansive field of tall grass filled with a herd of grazing bison, with a dramatic sunset in the background. The clouds were arranged in such a way that a beam of light punctured down to the ground on the left side of the sky and on the right was a fascinating combination of soft purples, reds, oranges, and yellows. All of this combined together made for an unforgettable vista that will stick with us for the rest of our lives.

10.0 California [San Francisco] Our arrival in San Francisco marked the halfway point of our trip, three weeks. By the end of our stay in San Francisco we would have experienced 4,000 miles, three false starts and one attempt to break into the car, an 18 mile backcountry kayaking adevnture, several national parks, a night with snow fall in the tent in Yellowstone, torrential rain storms in the Badlands, and mental and physical exhaustion. Nonetheless, neither of us regret a thing!

[Yosemite] In leaving San Francisco and after visiting a string of cities along the coast, we were ready to re-immerse ourselves in nature. For the first time in weeks, we started to drive back east towards Yosemite National Park, where we were fortunate enough to find camping openings within the park’s main attraction; Yosemite Valley.

[Sequoia] After Yosemite, we began to reach new temperature highs as we approached the desert climate of the southwestern states. At the base of Sequoia National Park, the temperature climbed to nearly 100 degrees. However, by the time we had scaled the park road to the top of Sequoia, it was below 70 degrees. Once there, we enjoyed a spectacular few days dispersed camping in Sequoia National Forest between two large trees on the side of a mountain on top of a rocky cliff.

[Death Valley] After a rejuvenating stay in Sequoia, we continued onward towards Las Vegas with a quick stop in Death Valley National Park to catch the sunset at Zabriskie Point. Even at 9pm, the temperature was just short of 110 degrees, making us quickly realize that camping in the desert would not be possible. In attempt to escape the heat, we continued driving that night to Vegas where we stayed at Alexis Park Hotel for two nights to celebrate Jonah’s birthday.

12.0 Utah [Zion] A change in our itinerary brought us to Zion National Park for a couple nights, featuring backcountry camping in the Narrows and a flat tire on a dirt road inside the park. Fortunately, we were able to have the car serviced quickly without losing any time. We spent a night in Pink Corrall Sand Dunes State Park on a Saturday night and had the car repaired early Sunday morning the next day.

[Bryce] As we made our way into the last week of the trip we arrived in Bryce Canyon to see the unique hoodoo-scattered landscape. While in Bryce, we were fortunate enough to take a full day horse ride through the red rock on the Thunder Mountain trail with a spirited and enlightening host named Mike. Bryce left us amazed and eager to see more of Utah’s bizarre landscapes.
